Last year I wrote the following article about how to add your New Year's Resolutions to your
User Profile. These aren't New Year's Resolutions, but specifically GAMING New Year's Resolutions.

http://www.dakkadakka.com/wiki/en/Add_Your_New_Year%27s_Resolutions_to_Your_User_Profile

A part of making resolutions is to evaluate your previous efforts. So I'm encouraging
people to post their resolutions, posted to their User Profile or otherwise, and to talk
about their successes, their problems, and their initial thoughts about their hobby resolutions.

Probably later in the month we'll be ready for a thread where we post links to our user
profiles with our 2010 Resolutions.

So here's mine, cut and pasted from my User Profile, with commentary:

1. Set up my debit paint-to-save-to-buy accounting system to stay to some kind of budget and increase the amount of happiness gained from a completed piece. I plan on writing the rules out for this, but it basically boils down to, paint something, save that much money in a debit account, use the debit account to buy more minis.

Never got around to this. My goal changed from "debit-paint-save-debit" to "paint 500
miniatures." The goals were kind of mutually exclusive.

2. Settle on an Eldar Army Harlequin scheme and try to get halfway through it by 2010.

I did figure this one out after a while. Shock and horror, it was to paint it almost the same
as the rest of my Eldar. Wow, that was hard.

3. Complete, expand, and game with the tri-elf armies for Fantasy: Wood/High/Dark.

I only managed one or two games with my High Elves, and only got halfway through with
my DArk Elves. I did end up expanding my Wood Elves in time for Adepticon, but never
got around to running the Eternal Guard list that I was plotting in my head.

4. Play my main factions every other time. Protectorate of Menoth for Warmachine and Wood Elves for Warhammer Fantasy.

The past year has been a crazy Privateer Press year for me. And mostly I've been using my
Trollbloods because they're just easier to carry around than the infantry heavy Protectorate
bags that I carried (almost all metal!)

5. Increase the number of quality Articles and Army Profiles in the Dakka Articles system. I'm no Taskmaster, unfortunately, as that would make the Articles system feel like my job. I'd like to keep my work and fun separate.

Oops, failed. I usually have a choice between hobby time, gaming time, and editing time. Add
being a Press Ganger and it's surprising that I got as much done as I have. Don't know where
we'd be without people willing to put up their own Army Profiles (my favorite is still the Fremen
one, sorry Dakkites!)

6. Play outside of my comfort zone or at least try games that I have figs for but never played. Things I'd be interested in include: Infinity, AT-43, Warlord, Uncharted Seas. Games I don't have minis for, but would love to try include: Elfball, Descent, Okko

Total failure. I was sick on the days I was going to learn these games at Gencon, and running
the Warmachine/Hordes events meant being a constant opponent for those days when there's
an odd man out on game days and mentoring new players.

7. Write fanfic that doesn't make me roll my cynical eyes. Yes, even at stuff I write for myself. Start plotting some serialized fiction for the Articles system.

Wow, I forgot I had plans for this. Will need to re-visit that notebook.

8. Paint more regularly rather than in fits and spurts. Settle for getting something done rather than pushing my days and nights to get it all done.

I'll call this one a success. After this year I think I have a feel for my painting tempo, my
modeling limits, and the benefits that just sitting and painting have for my overall
well being.

9. Learn more from the battles that I play, have more fun even when I lose, never forget to shake a hand or make the experience more pleasant for all involved.

I like to think that I succeeded at this.

How about you? How were your 2009 Resolutions and where were your successes and
what needed work?

I never make resolutions, because my plans for the future always go straight to the crapper. However, I did manage this year to paint a 3,000 point Ork army. Even managed to get a draw once.

I was going to:
1) Assemble 3000 pts of models
2) Paint 3000 pts of models

#1 was easy, I'm 2/3 done with #2. Quite happy with myself as I had a lot more college work than I expected to, so failure to meet quota isn't a result of muckin' about.

My plans changed a few times but overall I am happy with how '09 turned out.

I made it to the Semi's in Ard Boyz, acquired a couple new armies (Elysians and Dark Eldar) and managed to get one mostly painted (Luna Wolves).

Also did a bunch of work on my ever growing Tallarn 89th.

2009 gets a "Job's a Good 'Un" from me. Looking forward to painting my Elysians and their flight of Valks/Vendettas in '10.

My experience of Warhammer 40,000 in 2009 was great:

- Got back into the hobby in general after a year or so out, made progress with my 2 fledging armies

- Read the entire Horus Heresy novel series so far

- Got into Dakka, a great place to be that can distract and motivate, not simultaneously though!

- The new Space Wolves codex was released, Space Wolves were always my favourite army so this gave a significant boost!

The Bad however is a biggie; trying to get all the bloody things painted when I hate painting!

"As I recall, your face was tortured. Imagine that - the Master of the Wolves, his ferocity twisted into grief. And yet you still carried out your duty. You always did what was asked of you. So loyal. So tenacious. Truly you were the attack dog of the Emperor. You took no pleasure in what you did. I knew that then, and I know it now. But all things change, my brother. I'm not the same as I was, and you're... well, let us not mention where you are now."

1. Finish my currently built marines. That's right I don't need to build more, I don't need to buy more, I just need to finish painting the ones I have built. Doing that alone will put a huge dent in what I have left to do.

While I finished what amounts to 2 GW foam Trays full of marines I still have tons to go. The guard binge I went on 1/2 way through the year didn't help.

2. Dip the models that have been waiting for dip for 8+ months. I have a box that I throw finished tyrands and cryx into that are awaiting dipping. That box is so full of dust I can't tell how many models are in it anymore.

I actually did this! And then sold the models that I dipped.

3. No more models! Seriously when you fill 1/3 a 20x20 foot room in your attic with sci-fi, aircraft, armor, warhammer, etc... you don't need anymore. I'm not buying anymore store purchased models. If something comes along like 2nd hand deals or rare stuff I'll think about it but no more stock stuff. Right now I don't buy anything else for an army that still has unpainted figures, and I've been able to keep that up for the past 2 months so I've been doing pretty good.

Epic fail. I ended up buying a BUNCH of guardsmen to finish off my GT army and then some marines to settle a debt. And then some AT-43 stuff, and then some Confrontation stuff, and some hordes. I did however sell off a bunch of models, almost 5 armies worth.

4. Build more molds. I have a box that I place things in that I would like multiples of. Well that box is now full so I need to clean it out!

Partial success. I built a few new molds but that box is still very much full.

5. Finish my warhounds. The warhounds are looking rather pathetic right now. The last mega game I took them too someone got ahold of them and played with them so now 80% of the joints are so loose the titans can't even stand up on their own. They need some joint lock or something. Of course they need lights, sounds, and paint as well.

EPIC fail. I moved the warhounds around my game room to make room for more projects... like the pair of reavers I got.

6. Cast more. I'm running out of honor guard heads and shoulder pads, I need to get out there and cast some more.

Success. I was able to finish off the 2nd company of Ultramarines (Minus assault marines/speeders) because of this.

7. Finish cleaning off 2nd hand models. I purchased almost 2000 points of marines a few weeks ago for almost nothing and I need to clean the paint off along with a bunch of other models I have sitting around.

I cleaned off a few thousand points of marines but then I purchased 4000 of 2nd hand guard, and then almost 100 rogue trader marines. Combine that with stripping my then existing guard (something I hadn't planned on doing last year) and the strip box got bigger.

All and all I don't think I did to bad for 2009.
For Successes I've got:
1) Repainted 3000 points of Guard. Much of this hadn't even been painted before.
2) Finished the 2nd company of Ultramarines (Minus assault marines/speeders). 40 Tac marines 20 Devestators, and the command group isn't anything to sneeze at.
3) Did TONS of commission work. An entire 6000 points of Warriors of Chaos army, 30 Space marines, a real of Battle board, some space wolves, and I'm starting a 3000 point space wolves army that I'll finish before Christmas.
4) Started the stormhammer. I've always wanted to build one and I'm about 1/3 of the way there.
5) Went to an Indy GT and placed 15th out of 82.
6) Sold my Eldar, Tau, Thousand Sons, World Eaters, AND 1/3 of my Tyranids for 40k. For Fantasy sold my Orcs and Goblins, Tomb Kings, and Wood Elves. For Warmachine/Hordes sold my Cryx and Skorne.
7) Sold my Magic cards and purchased two 1520s from battle foam.
8) Got two 2nd hand display cabinets from work for my minis.
9) Cataloged my gaming magazines/books so I don't re-buy them.
10) Read all the new HH books, read the new Ultramarines book, read the space hulk and black reach books, and read some old BL books.
11) Finished my Skullz mechanicus set and tracked down some games day marines from years past.

For failures/setbacks I've got (I'm not going to count things I bought and then became a success):
1) Started collecting bits for Mechanicus/demon army. Beginning of the year saw some good AT-43 sales so I stared buying that for parts. Then I got the parts for 24 blood crushers, 5 demon princes and 3 greater demons throughout the year.
2) Bought almost another companies worth of marines 2nd hand.
3) Bought 10 more Russes bringing the total to 30.
4) Bought 17 more Sentinels bringing the total to 20.
5) Purchased 2 sets of space hulk and TONS of extra tiles.
6) Purchased parts for a dark elf army... then decided I want to do lizardmen... then decided I don't know what to do.
7) Started working on Ultra-Wolves, and purchased parts for 15 ultra-wolf cavalry from Confrontation stuff.
8) Purchased the parts to build 2 reavers.
9) Generally spent more than any sane college student should on toy soldiers.

2 more successes than failures. I'd say that's a good job.

I am happy with 2009.

Out of wargaming i completed most of my personal goals .

Within wargaming i really improved. I pretty much doubled my involvement, and amount of points owned, and knowledge of 40k.
Plus i cut my loss rate down to only about one in five games

My 2009 Resolutions kinda went bust when I lost interest with the new IG Codex.

1. follow $350 budget - I did OK here, and got some good deals, allowing me to buy models for a couple PBS, but backed way from the Bassies in the process.

The Bizzare Bazzaars got me dropping cash and trading for WotR Evil / Uruk Hai.

And misc cool stuff (FW Techpriest, Diaz' Daemonettes) popping up a awesome prices pinched off a bit more.

I busted the $350 cap, but don't feel bad about it at all. I bought at *great* prices, taking advantage of having pocket money in a down economy.

2. build IG stuff
3. paint all IG stuff

With the revamped IG and a refocus from Apoc to other stuff, I've not done much work on these items, though I've planned out Baneblade, Shadowsword, and StormLord conversions to be done when the spotlight turns back.

Mostly, I've been thinking about and planning out CSM, hence that blog starting a while ago in P&M. 2010 looks to be a strong year for my CSM.

I'm not sure I had any real resolutions in January, but I can list my "accomplishments" here, at least.

1) I cleaned out my closet of a lot of unused stuff. Old CCGs, warhammer, all of it. Several half started projects got the boot (O&G, Orks, Tau), while I sold off huge chunks of my Marines that I would never end up painting (termies, death company, scouts, etc.). The only real black hole is my pile of eldar (roughly 200 unpainted, 30 half painted, and 30 fully painted infantry plus nearly 20 tanks).

2) I wrote what might be the most comprehensive review of the IG codex. http://www.dakkadakka.com/wiki/en/5th_Edition_Imperial_Guard_Codex_Review_%28Polonius%29

3) I've really made huge progress painting my IG. Between old stuff and new stuff bought for the codex, I've probably added more in 2009 than any other year.

4) I painted probably two dozen oop Space Marine tanks, giving me all the Rhinos, Razorbacks, predators I'll ever need.

Well I kind of moved near Toronto, actually.

I really just wanted to get something painted, on the order of say Yak's Tyranids. We are still in 2009, I would like to point out. I also just played World of Warcraft non-stop for the last three months, which was fun in it's own way.

I stand in awe of malf's (your), malfred's Painting Table being one of the Internet's great success stories of 2009.

I have made some purchases and done my usual assembling/ organizing all the little pieces.

There's like a month left in 2009. That's still enough time to paint like 30-60 models.

Or even a unit.

Forever alone

I've painted about a dozen models this year.

Go figure.

People are like dice, a certain Frenchman said that. You throw yourself in the direction of your own choosing. People are free because they can do that. Everyone's circumstances are different, but no matter how small the choice, at the very least, you can throw yourself. It's not chance or fate. It's the choice you made.

Hmmm. Well, I wanted my purchasing slow down- check.
I wanted to get my 40K orks full painted- total failure, burned out on painting them.

However-
-Got my Trollbloods totally painted.
-Painted the last gaps in my Orcs and Goblins
-Painted the HUGE backlog of stuff I had for WOTR.
-Got organised about painting and modelling in a serious way.
-Painted 1000 points of Dwarves after 4 years of procrastination (and more on the way, I'm actually enjoying painting them).
-Have been gaming much more, at least once a week, multiple systems, it's been a lot of fun.
-Sorted out the sale of some of the stuff I no longer want.

On the downside-
-Let myself impulse buy some assault terminators I don't really have a use for.
-Still haven't repaired the Lizardman box-o-crap I have.
-Definitely spent too much on stuff
-Did I really need a second AOBR? Now I'm in sprue shock.
-Brought a not-fully-painted army to a tournament for the first time ever. :(

I ruled 2009 on many dimensional plains.

The worldly plain:

I moved to the beach in Japan. I have two great part time jobs teaching. One at elementary schools and one at a University.

I got a hot-rod three wheeled murder cycle.

My nihongo skill skyrocketed to awesome.

I've become very healthy in what I eat (soda, chips, candy, crap dust food made in factories...gone). I don't smoke the "good stuff" any more (maybe when I go to Thailand in March...) and I go to the gym regularly 4 times a week.

The Nerdly plain

I am undefeated this year! How many others can say that? Grant it, I've only played 2 games.

My painting has taken a quantum leap as I have no room and no tourney schedule breathing down my neck. I can take my time doing every mini to a high calibre.

I am the 2009 Japan GW Grand Paint Contest Champion. I'll post a PDF to the Painting and Modelling when I get home from work. I think they just posted the PDF booklet this past weekend. Next year I'm a judge.

The Astral Plain

I have become able to have like 80% dream recall and have vivid dreams regularly. I have full on control Lucid dreams at least once a month. It's all about the pineal gland in your brain. Diet, exercise and intention.

The Relationship Plain

Things with the Ord Rady are going well. We've both settled in. I think she watches too much TV, but that is cultural here. I also rescued a kitten, Chucky Awesome, from under a vending machine. He is at home right now scratching up the furniture.

Mine was simply to get back on the IG bandwagon, trying to remember why I got into collecting the army in the first place and rediscovering my sense of fun.

This was an absolute failure. The 5th edition Codex completely murdered my love for the game, or perhaps it just buried what was already dead. These days, I win far more games than I ever did, but none of it means anything anymore.

The supply does not get to make the demands.

I got back into the gaming groove by showing up weekly to the local FLGS after a long hiatus. I'm rather disappointed in myself for staying out of it this long but I'm glad to be back!

And so, due to rising costs of maintaining the Golden Throne, the Emperor's finest accountants spoke to the Demigurg. A deal was forged in blood and extensive paperwork for a sub-prime mortgage with a 5/1 ARM on the Imperial Palace. And lo, in the following years the housing market did tumble and the rate skyrocketed leaving the Emperor's coffers bare. A dark time has begun for the Imperium, the tithes can not keep up with the balloon payments and the Imperial Palace and its contents, including the Golden Throne, have fallen into foreclosure. With an impending auction on the horizon mankind holds its breath as it waits to see who will gain possession of the corpse-god and thus, the fate of humanity......

2009 was the year I played the least 40K; just didn't have the time. Sadly, it's pretty easy to name the games I played.

less than 6 pick up games
2 Tourneys in Tuscon, AZ
Necronomicon
Ard Boyz Rounds 1 and 2

I did, however, get to paint a lot more detail onto my Ork army.

And next year isn't shaping up much better for 40K gaming.

No earth shattering, thought provoking quote. I'm just someone who was introduced to 40K in the late 80's and it's become a lifelong hobby.
