Hi. I'm Moe.

I walked in to a local comics & games shop 2 weeks ago with my son and came out with a bug to paint Warhammer 40k miniatures. It's completely foreign to me. I haven't even assembled a model in nearly 30 years. Apparently there's even a game associated with all of this that you can use the miniatures for. Who'd have thought?

Anyway, I'm your basic totally green, completely uneducated (in war gaming), unadulterated n00b. I'll try not to ask too many ridiculous questions.

Welcome onboard, Moe. You've taken your first step on a road that leads to joy, sorrow, frustration, glory, satisfaction, and utter, utter financial ruin. You'll find most people here are quite happy to answer any of your questions, so go nuts.

Hello and welcome.

I hope you enjoy. Just keep in mind if you start gaming at your local store, some players treat winning and losing a single game like a life and death situation. Just try to have fun with it.

That's good advice. Fortunately, I've been playing video games with pick-up groups for a couple decades, so I've developed an auto-filter for a-hats.

I picked up the Black Reach set, and holy crap are there a lot of pieces. I actually popped out everything and have most of it assembled. I finished painting my first Terminator last night and the first thing I thought of when it was done was that this could take a while. The second thing I thought was I'm glad there are so many of them so I can do a better job next time.

The marine and ork models are cool, but I think that when it comes down to collecting an army I will go with Tau. I really like the "futuristic" mech look of them. I have no idea how they stack up from a playability perspective, but I think they look really good.

A lot of new Tau blood on here of late, it seems

Tau can be pretty competitive to play, but as with all armies (except spehss muhreens) they require actual ability and a bit of practise to win consistently with

I can attest to them being great fun to play, paint and convert though

Welcome to dakka Moe! It's a good place, and friendly to gaming dads (there are many of us).

I put a list together a while back of the threads that have really inspired me on dakka... I thought I'd share it with you in case you were interested.

Gitsplitta's threads that Make you go "WOW!"

migsula's: "Legion: =I= munda" (The links in the blog are broken but the pics are in his gallery.)
grey_death's "Random WIP Thread" (grey_death goodness.)
grey_death's "Sons of Medusa" (Amazing work and the definitive example of sponge weathering.)
SONS of ORAR's "WIP" (Wow! Really, don't need a lot of words for this one.)
Roleplayer's "Blood Ravens and Blood Angels" (More Wow! Same as above.)
vent's "Various Ventures" (I just love vent's style... and you'll find some fantastic tips in here too!)
BLACKHAND's "Sabre Legion" (The brilliance can't help but shine through in this early blog of BLACKHAND's.)
BLACKHAND's "40k Skaven" (Which has unfortunately been tabled as a project but the blog is really amazing. Dammit BLACKHAND... this was such an incredible idea.)
Yggsdrasil's "The World Tree's Offerings" (Amazing kit bashes, conversions and painting. The thread that catapulted Yggs to super-stardom.)
Commissar Khane's "A squeaky Waaaagh!" (I love gretchin, and these are the best.)
Ifalna's "commission blogoblag" (The most approachable commission painter ever... oh, and lot's of "Wow!" If you want to learn how to do stuff... read this.)
Hit's_the_spot's "Another True Scale Project" (You get to see some truly remarkable works come together piece by piece, and man can Hits paint!)
IceAngel's "Ice Angel" (Ice writes just awesome fiction for his Blood Angels successor chapter, and with each installment he gets better and better.)
Eggrolls "Blood Angels" (Why do the Blood Angels get all the awesome painters??)
Arakasi's "Da Dark Angelz" (Arakasi's building skills are phenomenal and his imagination is unparalleled.)
Whalemusic's "The Great Marine Swap" (This thread is just inspirational from start to finish... and so many people have developed as modelers and painters throughout it's pages. Definitely a win all-round.)

And... some suggestions from friends:
monkeytroll's "cyborks & flyboyz" (This blog makes me laugh {in a good way} every time I open it!)
Neil101's "40k Manufactorum" (Terrain making, scratch building, kit bashing imperial guard thread... this blog has it all.)
BrotherArgos' "Space Marines? Iron Hands!" (Some of the cleanest, sharpest work I've seen around, worth your time.)
migsula's "::Legion at Rhisienne::" (somehow I'd completely missed migsula's current blog... that won't happen again!)
Gitsplitta's "Rebuilding the Mantis Warriors" (My epic struggle with my space marine chapter.)
Vitruvian XVII's "The Electric Imperium" (If Admech is your thing, there is a place for you on dakka... right here.)

Enjoy your time on dakka!
