EDIT: Updating this first post with a group shot of my finished models.

End Edit.
So today I finally put some paint to some minis and did a test scheme for my Karist troops. I am not 100% happy with the colors but I can not really point to why. So I have come seeking your opinions!
It is not my best work by any means but what is your thoughts on the color combination? Good, Bad, would be better with _______.

The main color is a 50/50 mix of Vallejo metalic model air Signal Red and Arctic Blue making a nice deep metalic purple.
The Secondary color is Game Color Magic Blue (I may be playing Fallout a bit too much as soon as I put this color down my mind went to VaultSuit!)
Everything got a nice wash of Nuln Oil
Then the armor is drybrushed with Model Air Gun Grey and the blue parts are highlighted back up with Magic Blue.
Lunar yellow then added to eyes and power pack on the gun.

I apologize in advance for the picture quality. Working with just the cellphone camera.

I like it. I think the metallic aspect gives them a nice iridescent feel.

I like the metallic purple.

The blue is possibly a little too saturated. A slightly less fluro shade would tie in better, I think.

It would also help to carry the blue up to the neck and the back of the head, leaving just the face mask in the metal.

It's definitely a good start, though.

Looking good - I failed miserably when trying to make metallic karists, so you've done much better than I could!

The main issue that sticks out is that you are using three different colours that are not complementary in colour theory: http://www.tigercolor.com/color-lab/color-theory/color-theory-intro.htm

I'd maybe try making the blue a bit more purple in tone so that the yellow balances against 2 purples instead of sticking out against the blue. Crude photoshop attached!

Thanks for the feedback!
Made some adjustments, going with an analogous color scheme rather than contrast. I think it works much better along with matching the purple/pink color scheme of the maelstrom better anyway so double plus!
Let me know what you think.

That's a dramatic improvement - I'd love to see what they look like fully based as well! Nice job

Yep, I agree. Looking much better with the blue toned down. I am considering something similar for mine now - really liking the metallic purple look.

What an interesting and very different paint scheme. I would have never thought to try it. Well done.

Thanks for the comments. I really like the marble as well and it was surprisingly simple to paint.

No new pictures for today as family and football consumed my afternoon but luckily tomorrow is a holiday and I will be off work so I should make some more progress.

Progress!

Today I was able to get the bases and weapons done for the rest of the trooper squad plus the tempests. The weapons are not 100% complete as they still need the pink glow highlight but I should have that finished just after posting this.

@BobtheInquisitor, I had something like this in mind when I decided on the base so yes, Posh is a good description

Love the bases! Looks like colored glass broken up into shards? or is it something else? Keep up the good work! The infantry themselves look very Space-man

Thanks for the kind words.

The base is simply the Basius Hex pad + Greenstuff and paint. Nice to know it looks like glass

Here are the Tempest Elites!

The Squad Leader's helm is silver with a gold... facemask? The others are purple metal with silver facemask.

Nice A little hard to see with the background and contrast though - any chance you could try taking a group shot with a neutral background (like putting them all on a plain grey t-shirt)?

Ah yes the lower shot looks a lot better now. Do you have any portable / painting lights that you can put even closer to the models? They look very sinister in the lower shot

Trust me, no matter what damage they have the potential to do, single-shot weapons always flatter to deceive in 40k.                                                                                                       Rule #1

Wow. That Medge lightbox turned those tempest elites from a 5 or 6 out of 10 all the way up to 11. They look amazing standing in front of that backdrop lit up in similar colors to the Maelstrom. Good work.

Thanks for the kind words all!

I will get the troopers finished tomorrow and hopefully the nova and shadows as well.
Tonight's progress was interrupted by zombicide, which along with dungeon saga also still needs painted. Fortunately ME takes painting priority

The Troopers are finished!
Also the nova and shadow walkers are around 50% finished, and the angels are based. These are coming along FAST.
