So we rolled into warhammer world for a ToS tourney this weekend past.

These are a series of brief batreps summarising my experiences.

Most of you know about ToS: its non-swiss pairing, not really a tourney as such.

It tends to attract a less competitive crowd but I was curious to see how the recent releases and rule changes affected peoples list choices (WHW is now allowinf anything from escalation, stronghold or forge world except 30k stuff).

My list in all these games was as follows:

HQ
Celestine
Jacobus
Conclave (8 arcos, 2 crusaders)
priest with meltaboms

Troop
5 sisters with flamer in a rhino
5 sisters with plasma pistol in a rhino

Fast
9 seraphim, 1pair hand flamers, meltabomb
9 seraphim, 1pair hand flamers, meltabomb

Elite
10 repentia in a repressor

Heavy
Exorcist
2 Penitent engines
1 penitent engine

As you can see, I'm not spamming exorists

The plan was as follows: charge into close combat! The nuances, and there aren't many, will be revealed as we go through the batreps.

Game 1
The relic
Vanguard strike

My opponent was the affable Mark, who was playing his first games of 40k in ages.
His list was roughly as follows:

Khan
L2 Libby on bike
Lots of scoring bike units ~4 off
Landspeeder storm avec scouts
stormtalon
2 attack bikes with multimeltas

He had iron hand allies:
Chapter master on bike - artificer, power fist, shieldy chapter relic
more bikes

Immediate thoughts

Marks list was very mobile and very robust.
My main concern was that this game was effectively a T5 highly mobile army vs a T3 not-so-mobile army.

Early doors

Mark had first turn, which meant no first turn assault, which was ok.

However his whole army scouted right up to my lines.

The multimelta bikes annihilated my rhino for first blood.

A unit of bikes picked up the Relic and drove off with it towards the table edge!

The iron hands unit with chaptermaster in centrefield rolled ominously into view

The chapter master brought down an orbital bombardment, but was very unlucky and scattered off the conclave (could have been a short battle for them!).

Another unit of bikes dakka'd celestine and the seraphim, killing several sisters but celestine emerged intact.

In my turn the conclave and penitent engines lined up a charge on the central bike unit. This went well for me, as the bikes were wiped; however the pesky chapter master laughed at my assault with his 2+ 3++.

Celestine and combined fire from 2 seraphim units shred attacks managed to kill the librarian bikes unit but the libby himself was able to hit and run (there was much hit and run in this game!).

The attack bikes who blew up the sisters rhino, blew up a second rhino! They were charged and wiped by the repentia, having done their job of securing first blood.

Mid game

The librarian really started comign into his own. He psychic shrieked a unit of seraphim, decamating them, then cursed another unit who were persuing the relic so they had to take a morale check when they moved.

I was also having real problems dealing with the chapter master, who destroyed the penitent engines and slowly worked his was through the conclave.

All this time Mark had been moving the relic back a bit, back a bit more. I was a bit concerned about my ability to reach it.

With this in mind I sent the seraphim, celestine, and the repentia off after them. Unfortunately this resulted in Celestine getting gunned down - she got up, but then got insta-killed by the bike reserves.

But the march of the seraphim and repentia seemed relentless!

At this point, he exorcist opportunistically insta-killed khan!

It was a bit of a slog-fest- Marks scouts came on on the 'wrong' flank, and the storm talon all-but annihilated the repentia, leaving just a single sister left.

Endgame

I got lucky and managed to down the stormtalon with a lucky exorcist missile, but Marks bikes were still moving away, and seemed too far away. However I managed to roll well on a seraphim hit and run, and the repentia was just about in charge range.

The situation at this point was that I needed Mark to drop the relic to secure a draw. He had slay the warlord, as did I - but crucially he had got first blood.

The seraphim were comfortably in charge range of the relic-holding bikes, but I knew this wouldnt be enough. The sister repentia declared her charge first, and Mark held off his overwatch as he didnt think sh'd get in. But with her fleet roll, she managed to!

The seraphim managed to get the unit down to its last member, and the final repentia slew him with a swing of her eviscerator!

Draw secured, with the last roll of the game!

Post-game Thoughts

Great game against a top bloke and an interesting army, brilliant start to the weekend! Repentia are useful for something after all! Should I have reserved my rhinos?

Yay, sisters!

Pretty awesome battle report, but I'd seriously consider getting a better camera if I were you. The photo's are all of mediocre quality, which is kind of a shame.
Keep uploading your batreps though!

1400 points of EW/MW Italians (FoW)
2200 points of SoB and Inquisition (40K)
1000 points of orks (40K)
Just starting out with Ultramarines (30K)
Four 1000-2500 point forces for WHFB (RIP)
One orc team (Blood Bowl)

Funilly enough I was going to post on the tourney thread asking about that.

What'd be great is a device that takes a good pic, can connect to tinternet, and let me type a batrep too.

If anyone knows of such a thing, please let me know.

Game 2
Kill Points
Hammer and Anvil

My opponent was Janos, who was fielding an interesting-looking chaos marine/ daemon alliance.
His list was roughly as follows:

Huron
small unit of cultists
small unit of cultists
3 oblits
helldrake
maulerfiend
forgefiend

Daemon allies:
Big unit of flesh hounds
Big unit of bloodletters
Herald of khorne on a juggernaught

Immediate thoughts

Again this seemed like quite a mobile army. But much of it was T3 which was much more in the sisters sweet spot.

This was a pig of a mission for both our armies, as we both had numerous easy kill points in our lists.

Janos informed me of the infiltrate ability of huron, and this definitely affected my deployment - I spread out to try and limit where he could place his infiltrating oblits and flesh hounds.

Early doors

Janos had first turn, and by the end of it the flesh hound pack were on my doorstep - right next to the conclave. I wasnt sure how an assault would go, as the hounds had 2 wounds and Huron managed to give them feel no pain with his biomancy power.

Janos secured first blood by blowing up a rhino with his lascannon-wielding oblits.

In my early turns, I had no choice but to assault the conclave into the hound pack. With Jacobus buffing them (rerolls to hit and rerolling invuln saves with war hymns), they chewed through the hounds in surprisingly short order.

Jacobus was fighting the herald in a duel (and losing), so it was a relief when the daemons rolled badly for their demonic instability and were wiped as a result. Didnt expect that assault to go so well, in a big part this was due to good rolling on Jacobus 5+ invuln buff.

Mid game

The seraphim duelled with the oblits and both units ended up falling back after a few shoting phases.

The bloodletters in centre field were assaulted by celestine and the penitent engine squadron. Over several turns they were able to whittle them down.

Every time I grabbed a killpoint, Janos seemed to pull away again! My small squishy transports & scoring units were easy meat for the helldrake.

As with the prevous game, the onus was on me to cross the table to get the kill points I needed to close the gap between us. The repentia again did well, eviscerating a maulerfiend who had previously trashed their repressor!

They also managed to assault and kill the forgefiend who had been successfully held up by the conclave

Endgame

Huron was legging it out of range, and sent his cultists to stop the sisters advance.

This basically worked, but as I was so far up the table I managed to secure line breaker.

A second draw of the weekend!

Post-game Thoughts

For my opponents list - I really liked what Huron brought to this army. He's a bit mad, generating a random psychic power and giving a few units infiltrate. Mad but cool. Also liked to see some of the lesser-seen units on the table - Qudos to my opponents list selection!

Some surprises in this game. One was the decent performance of the repentia for the 2nd game in a row- they eviscerated a maulerfield, forgefiend, and then very late in the game, helped to wipe the cultist unit to secure me a draw.

The coclave again demonstrated their nous in CC. Though both their fights in the tourney so far had been on their terms (the were able to charge in both cases, making a big difference to the damage output of the arco-flaggelants in particular)

And i managed to get the penitent engines into CC again, which was nice.

Game 3
Emperors will (draw game)
Dawn of War

[note: no pics on this one, sorry!]

My opponent (whose name escaped me.. apologies!) had an interesting-looking nid list:

Winged tyrant with barbed stranglers
big unit gaunts
big unit choppy gaunts
small unit nid warriors
2 winged crones
3 biovores
3 hive guard
2 warp lance beasts

Immediate thoughts

The monstrous flyers & tyrant worried me a bit. Also note the fire round corners/ ignore cover heavy support choices - bad news for an assaulty sisters player! I immediately resolved to reserve my 2 scoring units.

If there was one silver lining its was the big gaunt units. These might be a nice way of gatting close - the seraphim holding them up, hit and run and then the proper assault units hitting. Did it work? Read on!

Early doors

I had first turn and wasnt sure what to do. I hid most of my army behind a big ruin while advancing.

Terrible idea! The hive guard exploded both penitent engines, killing most of the disembarked repentia! The biovores killed several of the conclave even with terrible rolls on my opponents part.

The seraphim did manage to get into combat and tarpit the gaunts though, which was nice - especially when the 3 arcos came charging in and wiped them later on. This also freed up the seraphim to shred the nid warriors (some great rolling, plus a chancy assault that went vey well).

Mid game

Worryingly, the hive tyrant moved back to the central nid lines ready to assault next turn. It had to go, but it didn't look on. No LOS on my exorcist - had to drive it at crusing speed but managed to unleash 6 missiles, one of which casued a wound.

My second serpahims deep struck in next to it and managed to get emperors deliverance. Unbelievably, they managed to inflict around 6 wounds, my opponent rolled terribly and it was dead!

This allowed me to get celestine into the remaining scoring unit, and with her heavy flamer and power weapon attacks, she made short work of them.

The crones started vecor striking my vehicles and put paid to the remaining penitent engine, and all but 1 of my transports.

Endgame

With my reserves on and racing to the objectives, it looked good for me at this stage. However the flexibility of the crones really told late in this game.

They both swooped down on the disembared scoring units, on one flank wiping the poor sisters.. but I got lucky on the other flank and managed to kill it with krak grenades.

But just when a win looked certain, the warp lance charged into the remnants of my last scoring unit, killing them.

When the dust had settled.. yet another draw!

Post-game Thoughts

I really enjoyed this game, in fact all the games I played on Saturday.

Again I liked the variation I saw in my opponents list. The crones flexibility was incredibly useful.

The turning point for me was killing the hive tyrant. Had he not gone down, it was curtains for me, to be sure.

But the nids just kept on coming back, and secured a deserved draw.

Basically by the end of day 1 I felt I had already got my monies worth for this weekend.

Most gamers I noticed hadnt gone mad for forgeworld stuff (however many people had one centrepiece model that was FW).

OK there were 3 warhound titans - and 1 pure knight list - and a couple of the massive chicken thing. But this probably represented around 5% of the attendance. Everyone else had fairly balanced non-spammy lists. Just as well for me, as I couldt compete with any of that stuff!

After a day of full on gaming it was time for a rest and downtime before another days gaming on the sunday! As a dad having not really had a break since baby came along, this was utter bliss.

As I managed to forget the pics - I have included a pic taken by my mate, who thought celestine would look good in churchy terrain

Game 4
Emperors will (draw game)
Vanguard Strike

Ewan had brought some nifty-looking Dark Angel toys:

Chaplain on bike
Big plasma bike unit with Apothecary
L2 libby
2 tactical squads, one in a rhino
Second, small bike unit
dakka pred
missile landspeeder squadraon
heavy flamer landspeeder
double AC Dread
Attack bike with multimelta

Immediate thoughts

Another bike army, this time with much more long range shooting. On the surface, more of a challenge as I wondered wether my penitent engines in particular would be intact by turn 3 or so.

On the plus side, rather limited scoring potential (a bit like me!). Perhaps this would work in my favour.

Early doors

I had first turn but night fighing meant that not much would be happening. I sent a unit of seraphim up to guard one flank along with the priest.

Everything else made a beeline for the static Dark angels lines and objectve on the other flank.

In Ewans turn he secured first blood by blowing up the repentia repressor, the repentia disembared and were ironically flamed to death by the speeder! The seraphim also took a bit of a battering but celestine and 3 or so of the unit remained intact.

Mid game

Celestine assaulted the dakka pred and blew it up, but then got killed by the Dreadnoght!

She promptly ressurected, and killed the librarian in a challenge! The conclave took a bunch of overwatch and I stupidly failed to do look out sir on Jacobus, he got dakka'd and the conclave failed their charge.

On the plus side, the exorcist blew up a tac squad rhino. But at this stage the long range shooting of the DA really started to take its toll. All the penitent engines got blown up. Rather unfortunate for me was a weapon destroyed result on the exorcist, effectively neutering my only long range anti-tank weapon. Bit of a blow, that.

The reserve scoring units took up position.

Endgame

There was a very manic end to this game. The plasma bikes showed up and annihiliated a nearby unit of seraphim.

I was a bit worried about their mobility, so hit and ran celestine out of her combat to charge the bikes.

But she got engulfed in plamsa overwatch fire. Silly move in retrospect. This enabled the chaplain to break off and contest one flank (he did better than this in the end - blowing up the sisters rhino and killing the unit inside!), while the plasma bike unit went off to the other.

The space marines on foot were also really showing their mettle in CC.

The decimated conclave eventually got in, but really struggled against the remaining marines (and there werent many!).

When they finally won the combat and the remaining marine fled, they went off chasing the small bike unit that was threatening to contest, but the marine auto rallied and charged the scoring sisters.

Worse was to follow as the dread charged the scoring sisters, and they had hardly any ability to scratch it.

In the end the game went on to a turn 6, and the last remaining sister was downed by the dreadnought. A humiliating tabling!

Post-game Thoughts

It didnt feel like a tabling! I struggled with the combinatation of good long range shooting, good assault capability and AV12 in my opponents list.

I did make a few daft mistakes, but the key problem was the contesting dread. When the exorcist was popped and the repenta flamed, I lost the ability to take it out.

On the plus side this battle ranked highly in may all time favourite games of 40k as there was just so much going on! Nice list selection from my opponent too. Missile speeders are a no-brainer.. but a double heavy flamer speeder?! Never seen one used!

Game 5
Scouring
Dawn of War

My eldar opponent was a lovely young chap who hadnt been playing long. Long enough to know a good list:

Avatar
Wraithgiant
Spirit seer
5 Wraithguard in a Wave serpent
5 Wraithguard in a Wave serpent
Wraithknight
Wraithknight

Immediate thoughts

Well, I get to face wraithknights for the first time! My immediate concern is the T6/8 nature of my opponents army. Worrisome. He also seems to have lots of long-range shooting. Hmm...

Early doors

I reserved both scoring units again.

The key moment happened very early. I got first turn and managed to hit a wave serpent 4 times with the exorcist before it moved, but I only got 1 pen (turned into a glance). The next turn, the exorcist got blown up for first blood!

I sent my repemtia and penitent engines charging forward but held the conclave back for a counter-charge.

Bad idea, they got shot to ribbons. Unfortunately it dodnt take long for the penitent engines to get blown up either.

Mid game

Celestine managed to assault and blow up a wave serpent.

My scoring reserves came on and... stayed away from the wraithknights.

Celestine then got insta killed by the Wraithguard.

Endgame

There was a desperate flank move by the 2 sisters scoring units, but predictably it didnt work. The only real high point was the avatar taking 3 wounds when assaulting a unit of seraphim. Even this though wasnt quite right as I forgot hes immune to flame attacks!!

A second loss and tabling!

Post-game Thoughts

That really did feel like a tabling! I feel this was a classic 40k rock paper scissors. Could I have done anything different to win or draw? I don't think so (well - spam exorcists I suppose )

Reflections on ToS

This is probably the only event I'd travel a long distance for.

The atmosphere and opponents are always top notch, the food is solidly good, and its warhammer world!

I feel the recent changes to what is allowed (lords of war, FW etc.) hasnt actually changed things very much.

Although I didnt face a titan, I doubt I'd have more trouble than I had against double wraith knights.

I'm also really glad I didnt bother with anti flyer defence, as this would have meant less assaulty goodness.

I was considering the quad lascannon fortification, but its 200 points and that is a repentia squad!

Finally, I saw this as I walked past a display case.

And yes, I did buy a Voss Lightning

Yep, it's no doubt you couldn't do much vs eldar. Same would have been vs titans.

Did pent engines do any good for you on the whole? Or did they feel like wasted points.

It's great to hear how friendly everything was at warhammer world for ToS. I was worried some of it may be ultra conpetitive. I'm really hoping to make it up to Nottingham at least once this year (hopefully a friend and I can make it to the battle brothers event).

Thanks for showing an assaulty army can still be fun in 6e, who needs marker lights when you have chainswords!

Fun reports, and good to see that you could do reasonably well with a list that you enjoyed. I am strongly jealous of the new Lightning though, and expect a game in our future so that the Dakkajet can duel with it through the skies!

Nice to see that not many people brought the cheese, which led to a lot of fun games. Plus, I love your list. Next game I play with my Sisters I'm going to take some Penitents, despite the bug drawbacks from being a walker. If they were monstrous creatures they would be a great unit The Eldar game was a tough one, not really sure what you could have done to change the result there.

@koooaei - I think the PEs are still a decent choice. Don't get me wrong, exorcisms are by far superior in the heavy slot. But s10 is very nice, even having lost the ability to gain extra attacks. They are a bit pricey at 80 points, and very often get glanced out of action before getting into combat. They are primarily in my army cos I love the models. One thing I would say is they need to be part of a multi- part rush of assault troops, otherwise it's an easy decision to focus fire and take them out.

Lovely. Verrrrry interesting to see such an unconventional list at work -- and it did work okay, you just desperately needed a second Exorcist.

Also, what's the 999 point chicken? Some kind of giant walker thing, I presume, but which?
