Orks vs IG - 500pts

My second 5th edition game and battle report, my opponent's first (having also not played in a decade). Pictures were taken (but not by me) - so hopefully they will be added later (though both our armies are still being put together, so its not pretty. Still, better than having Orks represented by Kroot...)

DA DARK ANGELZ (ORKS)
[HQ] Big Mek, Kustom Force Field, Burna, Boss Pole (110pts)
[TR] 11 Shoota boy plus Nob with Slugga, Powerklaw and Boss Pole in a Trukk with Big Shoota, Boarding Plank, Reinforced Ram and Red Paint Job (162pts)
[TR] 11 Shoota boy (Big Mek attached) in a Trukk with Big Shoota, Reinforced Ram and Red Paint Job (111pts)
[FA] 2 Deffkoptas with twin linked rocket launchas and one with a Buzzsaw (115pts)
TOTAL: 498pts

IMPERIAL GUARD
[HQ] Primaris Psyker (70pts)
[??] Psyker Battle Squad (7 psykers plus Overseer) in Chimera with Heavy Flamer and Multilaser (145pts)
[TR] Veteran Guard (10) with Shotguns, 4 meltaguns and carapace in Chimera with Heavy Flamer and Multilaser (155+pts)
[TR] Veteran Guard (10) with Shotguns, 3 flamers and carapace in Chimera with Heavy Flamer and Multilaser (130+pts)
TOTAL: 540pts

NOTE: IG was working from memory on his list and discovered later that it was wrong to the tune of 40pts...

MISSION & DEPLOYMENT: Annihilation, Pitched Battle

PRELUDE
IG chooses side and deploys first, deploying all 3 chimera in a gun line across the back left of the field (my left to right, meltas, psykers and flamers). Orks deploy opposite - Powerklaw trukk left, Big Mek trukk right. Deffkoptas deploy further right and scout move to right side of IG tanks. Orks then seize the initiative!

TURN 1
Da Deffkoptas move into position to fire twin linked rokkits and assault the right chimera. Trukks move straight ahead 13" towards the other two. Da Deffkoptas manage two hits, one glance (on armour 10!) - shaking - and then proceed to fail to even glance in assault (Buzzsaw rolled 1, 1, 2 for armour penetration). Things were not looking good...

The shaken Chimera tank shocked da Deffkoptas causing them to fall back. The Vets disembark, flaming da Deffkoptas, along with the centre Chimera - as well as Multilaser and Shotgun fire. The single remaining deffkopta (with buzzsaw) falls back further with a single wound. The remaining chimera pops the Powerklaw trukk, kerrunching it. Da boyz disembark only to be attacked by the Primaris and sanctioned psykers. 5 die, but the remaining 7 hold.

ORKS: 0, IG: 2

TURN 2
The Trukkless boyz move towards the gap between the left and centre Chimeras. The remaining trukk heads 13" towards middle of the centre and right Chimeras. Da Big Mek and boyz disembark. Da Deffkopta continues to fall back. Waaaagh! is called and the Trukkless boyz move up to make sure the Powerklaw Nob can assault the centre (psyker carrying) Chimera. Da boyz split between the left and centre Chimeras. Da Big Mek lets rip with his own flamer template on the Vets, as well as da boyz shootas, but carapace armour save all but two. They multi assault the remaining vets and the centre (psyker carrying) Chimera. The left Chimera is shaken and loses it's Heavy Flamer, the centre Chimera is wrecked - the psykers disembarking out the back - and the flamer Vets are cut and run down.

Both the remaining Chimera tank shock their respective Ork units for no effect. The meltagun Vets disembark and cut down the Trukkless boyz to 3, but still they hold. The psykers retreat. The Primaris psyker's lightning attack misses da Big Mek's boyz, and the sanctioned psyker's blast is reduced by cover saves from the Chimera wreck, losing 2 boyz and wounding da Big Mek.

ORKS: 2, IG: 2

TURN 3
The remaining Powerklaw Nob and two boyz face off the meltagun Vets. Da Big Mek and boyz move towards the psykers. The Trukk tank shokks the psykers (luckily rerolling difficult terrain for the Chimera wreck), but fails to send them off the board. Da deffkopta continues its slow fall back towards the edge of the board. Shooting sees 2 meltagun Vets down. Da Big Mek's burna and boyz shootas make short work of the sanctioned psykers, killing them all and wounding the Primaris. Both boyz groups assault, the Trukkless boyz bringing down three Vets for the loss of one thanks to the Powerklaw. Although unable to run them down, the meltagun Vets are trapped by the Trukk and removed. Da Big Mek makes short work of the Primaris psyker and the game is called due to lack of time.

ORKS: 5, IG: 2

ORKS LEFT:
Powerklaw Nob plus single shoota boy.
Falling back Deffkopta with twin linked rokkits and buzzsaw (only one chance left to rally)
Trukk with big shoota
Da Big Mek (1 wound) plus 9 shoota boyz.

IG LEFT:
2 Chimera, both with Multilasers, one with Heavy Flamer

ORK VICTORY
IG could probably finish off the decimated boyz mob and pop the Trukk, though unlikely to wipe da Big Mek's boyz, for a possible 4KP. There is an unlikely possibility that da deffkopta rallies *and* isn't taken out. The Orks ability to take out the remaining Chimeras would seem mainly dependent on the trukk surviving - mostly for the manoeuvrability to allow hits on Chimera side armour... Potentially 7KP for Orks, though unlikely.

Nice report. Intersting to see a Psyker and PBS in a 500pt list makes me want to try it out!

The guard force was mine... and I'm really embarrassed that I messed up on the points. I could have sworn the carapace was still in the list... apparently not. Next time everything will be written down to prevent this type of error.

The Primaris/PBS setup was well worth the points, though I think the rest of the list needs a serious rethink, as do my strategies

Well first to the IG player your idea was fine the thing you need to realize is a chimera is a "open topped vehicle" so you could of shot your plasmas out of the chimera without of putting them in the face of orks which you do not want to take on in close combat. The thing I would recommend is with only a 500 list look at a colossus or a medusa they are only 130 points i think they are perfect for horde armies cause of their large templates. Get rid of the carpace armour it is to much for weak IG. Personally with IG i follow the idea "Quantity over Quality". I run a primaris pysker and a PBS in my 1850 list and it works great. Just don't forget their uses you can bring down a enemys leadership to 2 for a turn depending on the # of Pyskers you have in your PBS. Then just shoot the hell out of the unit make them take a leadership test and watch them go fleeing off the table as your army cackles in glee. Also remember that your primaris can cast the shroud or whatever to make any unit shooting at them to take a leadership test just to shoot.

Given that both lists were originally built to work together in a doubles tournament, I wouldn't be too hard on your list after one game. I would recommend staying inside your vehicles though Oh, and moving them (I like auto hits!)

I really enjoyed that battle report. Thank you.

Having only about a thousand points of orcs as of yet, it is nice to see how much fun a small game can be.

At best I'll only have another two or three games before then!

Thanks everyone else for your comments as well - I'll make sure to keep writing them (as they happen...) - got to work on some pics for the future though...

You could have instead taken foot slogging orks. 1 PK Warboss. 2 30 boyz mob with PK nobs. pop the chimeras and wipe out the squads in Close Combat with your 60 + attacks.

Well written report. IMO Orks are the strongest army at small points 1000 or less because of their cheap troops.

Shouldn't have ran the meltas I reckon... also, at this points level, some sentinels I think woulda been great (w/ heavy flamers). Flame em, charge in, and watch the orks due as their str 3 cannot pen the sentinels! 105 pts of awesome

Orks are hard to beat at low points specially if they bring large mobs of boyz, just can't shoe horn in enough shooting to deal with them in most armies.

You, sir, are wrong, because a Chimera is not an Open Topped vehicle. In fact, it is fully armored, but has 5 fire points from the top hatch and lasgun ports at the rear of the hull, so you can fire about half your squad's total weaponry from it. Although suggesting the drop of Carapace is valid (because a mechanized squad would not utilize it as well), I don't know if the PBS's leadership lowering qualities would affect a fearless unit, such as an ork mob. And for the colussus or medusa in a 500 point game: I would rather not, because it is an open-topped vehicle without the 15 point upgrade, and for that expense I'd rather take a naked Russ that has better armor.

Just my 2 cents, welcome back to 5th!
