It was a great tournament and we all had a lot of fun. The soft scores were a bit much in my opinion, but I am a competitive player so I am biased.

Bummed that I didn't pull out best general! Ah, I was in first after the first day, but I had two really tough match ups day two and I dropped out of it.

Well played though Hulksmash, too bad you didn't play Toby, you had the tools to work his army.

I still don't know how the Ultramarine player won it all, he wasn't on the top tables any game that I saw. He must have maxed his soft scores. But, didn't he win all his games too, just not massacres, right?

Need help tuning your list? Check out this article.

Yeah, We'll have to see when the actual scores are posted but I found it odd that he wasn't up there with all of us playing at the top. His soft scores must have been insane to keep him away from us and allow him to win. Though that means Toby must have gotten hammered somewhere not to take it all since his painted was way up there.

I would have loved to play Toby but thems the breaks. I pulled a guy in the last round that though he'd been doing very well 6 AV12 skimmers don't hold out against 15 Missiles so he pulled an uphill fight from the get-go on that one.

And as for tough match ups I'd say pulling the highest final BP and 3rd Highest BP (unless Steve Sisk was higher than me) means you had a really tough day.

But huge soft scores (55%, 15% of which you couldn't control in the least) plus up to a possible 30 bonus points if you maxed the votes meant that actual battle points factored very low in the tournament. Also Ties being worth 12 points was a little crazy and was what actually kept me in the tourney (well that and the massacres )

Oh, and updated the first result part of the post from me.

No story, he was just my second match up (first two pairings I faced made best over all and best general). Remember kids Orks wanna be in combat with marines, they want the charge on bikes (wounds on 6's bite the big one), and for gods sake don't shoot before the assault. I made several mistakes and was outplayed, he was a very good tactician and claimed a masssacre from me. If I played correctly I could have tabled him.

and Hulksmash, again I really enjoyed our match up first game and I am looking forward to facing you again in the future

your pretty good on Steves list but I think the speeder was a storm with scouts in it, there was also a 10 man footsloggin termies squad and a libby in there too.

Steve always has one of the highest painting scores, and he is a good guy to play. He is one of the best players in N Ca and he must of got a low score in one of his first games so you guys just never met.

The fact that even in a loss you still scored 8 points means that even if you get massacred you are not very far out of it. Add to it that when you massacre you get 18 points, and a minor win is only one point more than a tie means that the battle points are going to be grouped very close together, and the soft scores are going to make or break you.

I had the 7th highest battle points, but finished way down at 18th place because of the soft scores.

Vanilla marine bike lists are very tough. Greg Swanson plays one around Chicago and he does very well. He won best General at the Big Waagh last summer if I remember correctly.

The second day (his 4th Match) he said he got his arse handed to him by the Dark eldar player. His army was painted very well with many conversions and speacial shoulder pads. I believe he won best painted last year.

P.S. I asked them about pairings because one of my opponants did not show up (lost his first 3 games) so I got put up againt the guy playing the wringer. I felt bad I took away his full marks because of the by but they said his score against the wringer would have stood anyways. I asked if that wouldnt mess up the pairings and they said matches were based on comp. not winning. wierd way to run a tourny, no?

It's possible Blackmoor since the first 3 games weren't based at all on Battle Point Rankings. But if he didn't lose a game he still should have been sitting up near us unless he had 0 massacres. If he didn't have a single masscre and only had 2 minor and 2 majors going into the final game then maybe. Since I was sitting at around 60 BP's and he would have been at about 56. So it's possible. It just seemed weird that no one that was at the top 4 tables had played him all weekend Its why most of us were a little surprised when his name was called

Not knocking his win at all. He had a beautiful army and the guys I do know that played him had a blast. Just the kind of guy you wanna see in Vegas if you get a ticket. I can see why in such a soft score environment he did so well. It's something we have to remind ourselves of that BP's were worth less than 45% when everything was tallied up. It just kinda shocked a lot of us that played near each other the last round. I think it more had to do with the way that they set up rounds (especially the first 3).

And thanks Grimgob, maybe we'll play sunday at the RTT at the Realm

I expected Toby and Touradj to do as well as they did. Especially Toby's Harlie army. That thing looks sweet.

Toby got hammered on sportsmanship, from what I was told. I guess he came in near the bottom. He tied Steve for total points, but I was told Steve got some votes for favorite opponent which is what gave him the win.

Good for Steve though, he must have maxed soft scores, so well played. I was gunning for Best General as it was the only thing I could control anyway.

Blackmoor got a tough draw turn 1 against Charlie, who is a really, really tough opponent. That sort of stunk for both of them.

I am looking forward to the SoCal slaughter as most of those guys will be there again, I need to come up with a diabolical list to beat everyone! Haha, hopefully this time though, my spoiler list actually plays lists it was meant to beat!

You should come for sure Ozzy! That would be fun.

The 40K tournament is the weekend of April 16th. It will be at the Ontario convention center. If you want to come buddy, let me know and maybe we can all get a room. My group here from SD is coming with 6 at least, so you could probably stay with us.

Drag Abe, Gordy, Alex, and all the other guys along too if you can, that would be a lot of fun.

I am really excited about SoCal Slaughter. Especially since I live really close. I am hoping that I don't move to Texas before the tournament. If I do, I guess will just have to fly back for it...

Awesome! There were no Daemons, Necrons or Witch Hunters this go around, which stunk.

It will be good to meet another fellow Dakkite.

I want to get my Eldar done in time, but they take ages to paint. I think I might bring my IG this go around. My wolves were a good tournament army though as they play so fast. I finished all my games well under time.

Man....I'm actually no longer envious to have not been there with those messed up score breakdowns.

If a massacre is worth 20 points.....and a tie is worth 12 points? That's absurd and abusive.

massacre was 18..

loss: 8
draw: 12
minor: 13
major: 15
massacre: 18..

or think of it as

0-4-5-7-10, and you get 8 points for just playing It sort of trivialized minor victories, but oh well.

Personally, not a fan of the idea that a massacre and a draw > minor victory and major victory (or even a massacre and a loss is the same as two minor victories), but such is life.

However, I was out of the running before the event even started since I didnt finish painting my army, so I focused on having fun... and succeeded for the most part.

Yeah, I only won best general because of the breakdown. I was 3-0-2 but all 3 of my wins were massacres which pushed me ahead of Dave(?) by a single point even though he went 5-0 he only had 2 Minors, a Major, and 2 Massacres which actually put me 1 point over him. It is what it is though

There is a reason for the soft scores but in all honesty it looked to a bit top heavy, but I imagine everybody was aware of this prior to the event.

A big congratulations to Hulksmash, that's certainly a worthy accomplishment I dig your SW list.

The softscoring for this event was ridiculous. Was it playschool? Was this scoring system known ahead of time? If so then I guess the participants got what they wanted.

That sounds like my kind of event! Showing up with the sole purpose of crushing people with no regard to their enjoyment of the games should grant you exactly the scores that were reflected.

Top ten in Battle Points and bottom ten in Sportsmanship? No top ten for you.

Heck, if I had it my way there would be no Best General award; it would be wrapped up in Best Overall. I guess it depends how people play in your area.
