What works better in general, having large blobs of troops or having every squad in a chimera/ valkyrie? Thanks!

If by "having every squad in a [transport]" you mean Veterans in transports, then you're best off taking a combination of the two. Pure Mech Vets is dead like disco while Horde Guard is still alive and kicking, so I guess Horde Guard is more flexible. However, if you mean to mount a Platoon up in Chimeras, ala Armored Fist squads, then you're in for a rough time. Chimeras are great because of their 5 fire points, but regular squads can't take advantage of that.

Yes, I do mean having a platoon in chimeras. I was thinking of trying this out, if only for fun.

I think it would be amusing against a horde army, (throwing around like 60 s6 shots would be funny,) but not really anything else.
BS3 and only 1 special weapon is bad in a chimera.
Having to basically take a lord commissar to make sure your guys don't get pinned/run off the board when your chimeras explode is meh.
Not really being able to receive orders because your dudes are in a chimera isn't exactly great, either.

I have had success with it. I run 4 or 5 chimeras in total but they are supported by everything else. Chimeras kick out a decent amount of fire power, and they are decent at grabbing control points. I have Leman Russ's and Melta Vets in Vedettas, and hellhounds. All supporting the platoon and command vehicles. They also drive right up to enemy units, belch out their guys, and shoot. They are platoons, they are cheap, and they are there to grab points, or support the other units.

That's pretty much what I wanted to try.

Darkhound, can you please elaborate on "Pure Mech Vets is dead like disco"? I thought pure Mech IG was the strongest build. Even more so with Vets...?

As for foot v. mech in general, I don't think one is necessarily better than the other.
As for if there's ever a reason to take regular squads in chimeras, I'd say it's appropriate to take a few if you just want to up the amount of AV12 you have on the field for the sake of AV12 spam (or perhaps in a few other goofy circumstances, like al'rahem).

Everyone I know has moved from running exclusively Mech Vets to a Blob squad or two supported by Mech Vets.
Candlestick, the problem with Platoon Chimeras is the effective cost. When you're running Veterans with special weapons in a Chimera, they can pay for themselves. Infantry Squads have a very difficult time paying for themselves, meaning the Chimera has to work harder. Is a Chimera worth 105 points?
