Taking a brain break from my Death Guard and posting something completely different. A couple days ago a friend of mine was looking at some of my old stuff and I saw a lot of things that I hadn't seen in a long time. That inspired me to make a thread of my really old stuff, and at the same time hope to encourage others to post their ancient bits of plastic and metal.

I'm also posting this because that same friend mentioned he used to play Necromunda a lot and this is a blatant attempt to lure him back into it. I started doing this a long time ago and have a pretty decent collection of really old stuff. I'll post another round of things later and if anyone sees something they'd like a better pic of please ask and I'll take a few. I would love to play Necromunda again. Wouldn't mind getting back into Mordheim either.

Ok, now that my motivation is clear, on to the nostalgia. Not everything here is 100% painted but I guarantee that everything is 100% previously played. These aren't just miniatures that sit in a display case, there are miniatures that have been on the tabletop numerous times. These are more than just material possessions, they are memories of good times.

First things first, glory be to Chaos! Not going to post a lot here because I have a couple other threads going where Chaos is all I post, but these models haven't seen any Dakka time yet and I can't not post Chaos. But I'll keep it limited.

World Eater

BLOOD FOR THE BLOOD GOD! This RT model isn't legal in the current list which I find highly annoying because almost all of my World Eaters are Khorne Bezerkers modeled with 2 Close Combat weapons. Maybe they should join the Angry Marines.

Conversions

Both these models were conversions for 2nd Ed Chaos list for special characters. I cannot remember who the guy on the left is, but the guy on the right was Huron Blackheart.

Next up are my forces of the Imperium. While the vast majority of armies I played were "bad guys" I did make the effort to put together a sizable Imperial force so I could have some variety and ally with people in bigger games that I would normally be playing against instead.

Ogryns

The Rogue Trader models were the only ones I liked. The ones that came later look too goofy, cartoonish. I really liked using these to assault troops way on the back of the board. Chimera top speed, jump out, roll to wound for jumping out og fast moving vehicle, not care because they had 3 wounds, then shred everyone in range with Ripper Guns. Ahhh... good times.

Inquisitor

RT body and 2nd ed Space Hulk arms with converted Psycannon. I killed a Changer of Ways with this model. Granted, I had a squad of Grey Knights with him at the time, but he's the one that killed it.

Grey Knight

And yes I'll say it again, RT really has these models right. The new ones... eh, whatever. I won't be buying any.

Imperial Psycher

Great model. Got hosed in 2nd ed though. Level 4 Imperial Psycher and gets 1 Wargear card? Yeah, that makes *total* sense

Assassin

I cracked up when I saw the face on this. I don't remember doing that on purpose, but that's ok, there's a lot of things I don't remember. But wow... either his Polymorphine is acting like a hallucinogen today or he's very very focused on killing you.

Next is my Genestealer Cult army. I also played a Genestealer Cult in Necromunda. I really connected with the backstory and liked the models a lot. They were the most flexible open-ended army in the game at the time and absolutely brutal to fight against, it was my most winning army ever. Most memorable victory was a game I played against a friend playing IG, he conceded at the end of the 3rd turn because there was almost nothing left of his force.

I miss my Cult.

Patriarch

This model was in ever single game that was every played with the Cult, which is in the dozens. He survived almost all of them, too (the fact that I kept him intentionally safe does help) and honestly I can only remember a single game where he was taken out.

Genestealer Magus

Only one would ever get fielded, I modeled different ones for different applications. One is wearing Carapace Armor and Force Rod, the supreme humor (to me) is that it is an old Inquisitor model. Ha.

Genestealer Hybrids

The Hybrids were so much fun to model because there's an amazing amount of variation you can use. Hybrids can display a wide range of mutations, from almost Purestrain Genestealer to almost pure Human. There were different stats for different Hybrids depending where in the generation cycle they fell during the mutation.

Genestealer Cultists

And again, the modeling possibilities were nearly endless. A *lot* of IG models found a home in my Genestealer Cult. A lot. They could take anyone as a troop, anything as a vehicle. Rhino? Predator? Chimera? Leman Russ? Yeah. They have all that and more. It is easily the largest fully painted army I have and would likely top 5,000k or more points in the current edition.

Of all the games I've played by GW, Necromunda is by far the game that captured my attention. I have played more games of Necromunda that all other GW games combined. To say that I have played it hundreds of times would not be an exaggeration. I really got into Necromunda. Most of my tabletop terrain is either related to or applicable in Necromunda. I Arbitrated a Necromunda league for almost a year and a half. Necromunda *really* got me. I'd really like to play it again.

Cawdor

My first and most played gang. I bought these miniatures the same day I bought the box set. The comparison to the Genestealer Cult colors and the way I painted my Cawdor gang is intentional. I was working on both at lot in those days and figured they could pull some "double duty". They never did make it to the 40K table, and if they ever did now it would be as some sort of press gang unit.

Redemptionists

These are not all the models I have for this gang but these are the most finished. You'll notice a few Cawdor models here, and some slight conversions. I didn't like the coneheads, just seemed impractical to me. Some of the most crushing defeats I ever suffered in Necromunda were while playing this gang, and I was totally ok with that.

Scavvies

My second most played gang. I had a lot of fun playing these guys because it was a distinct challenge because of the limitations they have, but also because of the absolute ruthlessness they suffered and dealt in return. I had them eat a fellow ganger on more than one occasion. Ha. If I get back into Necromunda this gang will likely be the first one back on the table.

Beastmaster

One of the more fun aspects of being a League Arbitrator was messing with people. The Underhive is full of nasty critters and I made sure there were a lot of random encounters with them. My collection of noisome beasties is huge. Someday I'd like to finish them.

Bounty Hunters

Every now and then I'd have one of these guys show up for free in a player's gang that was having trouble. A bit more muscle and firepower kept people in the game longer and hense kept them from losing interest in League play. Plus they were fun to model. I mean come on, look at the amount of stuff this BH is carrying! If I could have found a scale kitchen sink I think I would have included that as well.

Hired Scum

These guys would sometimes show up and work for the highest bidder at the beginning of a session, or I'd run them as a separate bunch of mercenaries just to throw the balance of a game a bit. And again, the modeling aspect was a lot of fun.

Ratskin Renegades

Started these with the intent of playing them as a gang but ultimately the wound up in similar roles as the Bounty Hunters and Hired Scum. I have enough models to finish up the gang, just not sure I have the interest in doing it.

Pit Slaves

This was the last gang I was working on before I stopped playing. I *really* enjoyed the conversions on this one. I was able to bring "useless" models from my collection on the table and play a gang that no one else was running. I might finish painting this gang simply because it is just so cool. This gang has the most conversions of any other and has some humor to it as well. Really wish I had the opportunity to have played them more before things shut down, but it is what it is. There may be more opportunities ahead.

The Beginning

Perhaps out of place considering all the other models I've posted today, but these models have a very distinct significance. They are the first two models I ever painted. Not a bad start.

@ BrookM- Thank you, it wasa lot of fun putting this together.

@ The Dreadnote- They are Ripper Jacks. Very nasty creatures. Not terribly common anymore however. GW doesn't carry them and they don't show up often on eBay.

Genestealer cults were fun, I'll have to dig out the few of mine that haven't been re-purposed and post 'em sometime.

Like what you did with the old inq, in a similar style I swapped one of his arms for a tentacle and gave him green skin for a chaos warband of mine. Think I've since ripped of the tentacle and stripped him to re-join the imperium

I found this when I was going through a box of completely unrelated stuff last weekend. I was floored! I've been looking for this for over a year and I hadn't seen it since 2003!

I can't explain how excited I was to find it. And yes, compared to the new one it's a bit... well, old. But it is so completely awesome and I wouldn't trade it for 10 new ones.

I'll be reparing it and restoring it to it's former glory. I might even pull out the MkIV Traitor Marines that go with it (yes, I know where they are )

It's been a while since I added anything to this. Really meant to get back to it before now, but I finally got tired of this being so long buried and forgotten.

Thread.. I command thee... ARISE!!!

Death Guard Plague Marines

I really enjoy painting and playing Chaos, and specifically Plague Marines. The RT models are what got me interested in playing Death Guard, and while some of these models are new to the force in the last year, they are still ancient metal from a day long past. This is a mix of RT and 2nd Ed models.

Chaos Dreadnought

This is my first Dreadnought. It was painted and given to me in '94 or '95 by a friend of mine named Jeff. There were times I was going to strip / repaint, but I never did and I am glad today that I didn't. I still have a lot of the original stuff he gave me. Better to keep it as it is now.

Lord of Change

This is one of the versions GW offered as their Greater Daemon of Tzeentch back in the day. Now it would barely make as a Daemon Prince by today's scale. This is the first model where I really tried hard to paint at a level above my ability. The mistakes are glaring, but the result is pretty decent still. I've never played this model and not sure if I ever will, but I really enjoy it.

Daemon Prince

One of the versions GW offered during 2nd Edition as a Daemon Prince, stock except for the head which I took from a Fleshhound. I painted him in honor of the Blood God and this model has seen dozens of tabletop encounters. His crowning achievement was killing Marneus Calgar in single combat!

Ork Dreadnought (Goff Clan)

I tried very hard to make this look as close to the GW model as possible. Later on I removed the Lascannon and replaced it with another Power Claw. This model was guaranteed to show up on the table every time I played my Orks. It has been destroyed so many times I couldn't possibly count them all.

Ork Dreadnought (Evil Sunz Clan)

This was the 2nd Ork Dreadnought I ever got, and it came bare metal in a box of stuff Jeff gave me. It is RT Dreadnought and is the larger of 2 that were available if I recall correctly. My intent was to have a Dreadnought for each Clan. I achieved that goal.

Thanks for looking. I hope people enjoy seeing stuff like this, and I encourage folks to post pics of their own old stuff here. I'll be back to post more ancient relics of wargame history another day.

@ AvatarForm- I'm glad someone else sees the value in letting some things just "be". I will admit to having taken some of my older stuff and converting it to today's standard, but it was mostly 2nd Ed plastics. I have converted a couple RT Chaos Marines to fit better into my Death Guard, but they are specifically for play instead of display, and in my mind nothing makes a model happier than getting knocked about on a game table.

@ Ascalam- I hated Spyrers. Great models and great if you are playing them, not so great for maintaining balance in League play.

@ deejaybainbridge- Finding that Land Raider brought back a lot of good memories. I need to bring out the force I used to play it with and see how it fares in 5th Ed.

Another update as I open the vault and find more things that would belong on this thread.

Bad Moon Ork Vehicles

I can't remember if it was Epicast or Armorcast (bit I'm really thinking Armorcast) that made this Ork Battlewagon. Yes, that is a Battlewagon, not a Buggy. Orks were a bit smaller back then. The Dreadnought is the original Ork Dreadnought with stock weapons. I had a large force of Bad Moon boyz, an dey gotz the best stuff cuz dey had more teef whut ta buy tings wif. I have a mob of boys where every model has a Plasma Gun. And it was leagl in 2nd Ed. I miss those days.

Beastman

Yes, really. This is a RT model, says "Beastman" on the tag. I've never played it but chances are it is about to join my Cultist force.

Bloodletters

The original, but I had to convert the Hellblades because the guy I bought them off from clipped them for a different project he was working on. I have to say this is a case where the older model is not as good as later generations, but most recently they have come right back to this design. I prefer the beefy ones w/ the axes. THOSE are what I envision when i think of Khorne. But whatever. These Bloodletters are older than a lot of people on Dakka so they deserve a place here, and I played many games w/ them and they fared pretty well in most situations. I just don't like the model much.

Bloodbowl Trolls

I love these guys. Bloodbowl is such a goofy game to begin with, Orks are ridiculously funny, and the Trolls added a really fun (if unpredictable) element to the game. I want to play Bloodbowl again.

Minotaur

I picked this up a bit later in my gaming career, about 10 years ago or so. I never had the chance to field it, but it was painted to match with my Chaos Warriors. I wanted to run a unit of Minotaurs w/ them but now you cannot take allies. It will see play at some point I am sure.

Thanks for sharing this old stuff! Sure, some of it is relatively poor in sculpt, but it's so evocative!

I rather like the kind of snaky Bloodletters, but that's mostly because they're more obviously not a human or alien with biology which corresponds to any real-world realism. Beefy muscular bloodletters are too logical. Crazy, bent-over, thin-bodied bloodletters are obviously something wrong from the warp; as opposed to an alien creature with a physiology which makes some sort of sense.

You should try out Blood Bowl again. It's always been one of GW's best designs, but a few years back they allowed a group of fans to revise it, which has ironically resulted in an incredibly tight and professionally-edited version of the rules. It's amazing.

@ Mannahnin- I can't argue with this: "Crazy, bent-over, thin-bodied bloodletters are obviously something wrong from the warp". I still like the beefy ones better (they look like little Bloodthirsters!) but you put my view of the RT (and now current again) styles into a better perspective. And thanks for the heads up on Bloodbowl. My #1 limiting factor is finding people to play with. My gaming group is awesome but very 40Kcentric. I want to get them going on a few older games like Blood Bowl and Necromunda (especially Necromunda) or even Mordheim... but it is what it is. I'm happy to have people locally to play something with.

@ Ambul- Hey, decent seeing you again. I'm glad you liked the trip down memory lane. I have some other stuff I'll be posting up before long, I'm going to dig out my WFB boxes and share some of my favorite stuff from them.
