Normally for my Sternguard I just leave them with the basic bolter and occasionally give a few the combi-weapon.. However I was toying with giving them all stormbolters and was wondering how dakka would feel about such a move.

You lose the special ammo and thus pay 28 points per model for storm bolters at S4 AP5 and that's it.

You should either not upgrade them or give them a combi weapon, such as a combi flamer, melta or plasma.

If you give them combi melta, they can kill anything. Even though it's overkill, sometimes I put 10 combi-meltas on a squad of 10 sternguard. It puts fear in my opponent, while they are still in reserve.

Giving sternguard anything but a combi weapon means they don't get their special ammo. Their special ammo can deal with anything but TEQ and vehicles.

Oh wow.. I completely misread the sternguard entry I thought they got the special ammo for anything that uses bolter ammo.. Not specifically a bolter (or combi-bolter) as it actually reads. This renders what I said null and void. Sticking with my bolters and combi-bolters.

Here's another option: Sternguard with Lascannons are the cheapest infantry Lascannons you can get.

Not true, Tac Squads can take Lascannons cheaper than Sternguard.

Right, but the Sternguard can take 2 and don't need to have a full 10-man squad before they can do it.

So as a whole the Sternguard get the cheapest infantry lascannons, but Tacticals pay less to give a lascannon to a guy.

But if you take the Lascannons you lose the special ammo rounds coming from them and that imo is the best part of a sternguard squad given that they can not split fire like a long fang squad.

How do you want to use the squad?
There are many different great set ups depending on what is needed.

I play a Kantor list and run three squads:

Two squads of ten with a Heavy Flamer, a combi-flamer, 3 combi-meltas, and a Powerfist/Bolter sergeant in a Rhino.

One squad of ten with two Missile Launchers (or Lascannons), 2 combi-flamers, 2 combi-meltas, and a Lightning Claw/Bolter sergeant in a Razorback.

The second squad Combat Squads with three bolter guys and the Missile Launchers holding a back-field objective (paired with scout snipers and Tellion) and the sarge and combi- guys in the Razorback with Pedro doing some headhunting.

I tend to play my sternguard as fire support, often perched in cover or up in a position to create a bubble threat to help protect an objective or soften up a target on an objective..

Note I do not play a Kantor or Lysander list. I usually use a Libby and often Shrike.

Seeing as they are such a versatile squad I can not justify making them a suicide squad of any sort.. it seems like a waste.

Can anyone justify NOT taking a bolter or combi-weapon? Beyond the earlier statement that they are the "Cheapest" way to get a piece of wargear.

Suicide Sternguard bomb in drop pod.
Yes, I normally give two guys melta guns or heavy flamers. ALL of the rest get combi's.

2 combi meltas, 2 combi flamers, 6 standard bolters in a drop pod. Keep them as a unit, or combat squad as appropriate based on your opponent.....meltas in one unit to pop a tank, flamers to hit what comes out....or one of each for a more rounded unit.

I'm not so big on stormbolters since you can't use the special issue ammo.

A buddy got me hooked on a pedro list that runs 3 squads of 10 sternguard in pods.
2 squads have 2 meltas and 8 combimeltas...DS down and light up 4 tanks. Then the other squad either has flamers and combi-flamers or plasma and combi-plasma to light up anything around them. With Pedro thats around 900 points of sternguard and 6 scorring units.

Best use is against a guard parking lot...just make sure to laugh manically on the way in.
