Had another fun game with a great opponent last Wednesday as part of a local 40k league. In the league, you know what races your opponent has available, but you don't know what they're going to bring. You agree on a point value & show up with your army & hope for a good match-up. My opponent for the day was once again Seer Bartooki. Bart (not his real name) is so much fun to play and always has a smile on his face, and he never quits or whines... wish I could say the same. (well, I don't quit... but I have been known to winge on a bit). Last time we played I kind of ran over him with a battle-wagon rush list. As he's just building his army up, he really didn't have the fire power to handle it... so I wanted to let him enjoy playing something a lot squishier.

So, with Bart's permission I threw together a list around the IA MekBoss Buzzgob. Not particularly overwhelming as a character (nice abilities in Apoc, but in 40k just LD-9 w/ a bunch of big choppa attacks in his first round of assault). BUT... Buzzy's got two grot henchmen which sets the theme for the rest of the army. Everything I took was either gretchin based, proxied by gretchin models... or was RT/1st Edition and size-wise looks like gretchin when compaired with a "modern" ork. Kind of a mish mosh... but fun!

Order of Battle

Buzzgob's Mechanized Grots

HQ: Buzzgob (in Nob trukk)
EL: 3 Meganobs w/PKs, TL mixed weapons in Trukk (red, boarding plank, armor plates, big shoota)
TP: 13 Gretchin + Runtherd
TP: 13 Gretchin + Runtherd
TP: 13 Gretchin + Runtherd
FA: 7 Warbikes + nob w/ PK (old warbikes look like grot bikes when compared to full sized modern Nob!)
FA: 3 Rokkit Buggies (proxied by Grot Tanks!)
FA: 2 Deff Koptas, TL-RL, 1 buzzsaw (I have plans for a grot version of these, but too many other projects are more important at the moment)
Hvy: 2 Killa Kans, RLs
Hvy: 2 Killa Kans, grotzookas
Hvy: 3 Zap Guns, 3 ammo runts, herder
Total: 1246 pts

There is no real plan to this army... just a bunch of little stuff flying around shooting things with the Kans and Nobs for emergency assault duty if needed. I love my grots... you'll be seeing a lot more of them (and some spiffy new models) as the summer wears on!

Eldrad's Second Recond Force

HQ: Eldrad
HQ: Avatar
TP: 10 Guardian Defenders: Warlock, Scatter Laser
TP: 10 Dire Avengers
TP: 5 Pathfinders
5 Fire Dragons in Wave Serpent w/ S-Cannon
7 Harlequins: Shadowseer Upgrade 5 Harlequin's Kisses
2 War Walkers: 2 Scatter Lasers ea.
1250 pts (I'm assuming)

Bart can chime in here... but this is a variation on his last list that is now loaded with nasty scatter laser fire yet keeps the mobile dragons and adds the punch of the Avatar with the cheese of Eldrad. He knew I wasn't going to pull the battlewagon stunt on him again, so this looks to be quite a formidable list.

Game Details

Scenario: Capture and Control
Deployment: Dawn of War
Table: Open / large rocks
Order: Eldar wih the roll-off and elect to go first.

I hate DoW... The Eldar bring on Eldrad and the guardian squad to establish the no-mans-land between our deployment zones and claim their objective with the nearly impossible to kill at range Pathfinders. I of course... elect to roll on in turn one, depriving the Eldar of a shooting phase (stupid scenario).

Turn 1

The eldar army marches on in force and good order. The War Walkers cover the right flank while the main force marches boldly towards the ork objective.

The orks... in true grot fashion... decide to take advantage of the rock wall in the center of the table and hide behind it as much as they can. It's not sure if this was buzzgob's original plan... but with grots... it's kinda what you can expect. The Koptas outflank and the grot infantry are held in reserve.

Head on shot of the ork advance...

Buzzgob is looking especially spiffy in his (antique) command vehicle!

Buzzgob sees a golden opportunity to take a shot at removing Eldrad and his exposed squad in one fell swoop, and throws everything he has at the Guardian squad.

Shooting, while impressive... is much less effective than he'd hoped thanks to Eldar magic tricksies (re-roll saves, cover saves & fearless from the Avatar). However, it did pretty much take the Guardian squad out of the game. So far, so good.

Turn 2

The Eldar do the "super-bowl shuffle" in order to get into better firing position and protect their vulnerable troops. Fire from the scatter lasers not obscured by terrain & the pathfinders results in two dead bikers.

In their half of the turn, the orks sort themselve's into "things that can hurt the Wave Serpent" and "things that can't". A lucky roll brings the deffkoptas in right on top of the Pathfinders. A squad of gretchin also arrive and camp out on the ork objective.

A clear firing lane for all the grot rokkits!

Everything opens up on what it's guns can reach. The rokkit barrage wrecks the Wave Serpent, miscellanious infantry die here and there... the Zap guns put a wound on the Avatar and the Koptas (between shooting and assault) kill all but one of the Pathfinders. Pretty darn good turn for the gretchin!

Last Pathfinder... but he holds!!

Turn 3

The Eldar line rearranges itself yet again! The disembarked Fire Dragons make a break for the grot back-field behind the cover of the rock wall, while the War Walkers move in to draw a bead on the bikes. Eldrad joins the Dire Avengers while the shot up guardians fall back to secure the objective. The Avatar decides that dealing with those two Deff Koptas is his top priority. The Harlies move fast towards the ork line, with the intent of multi-charging the bikes and Buzzgob's trukk.

Shooting from the scatter lasers all but wipes out the warbikes... with only the nob surviving (and passing morale!). The avatar succeeds in only putting one wound on a Kopta... while they ignore him and kill the last pathfinder.

The "Failequins" (Bart's term for them from last game) charge the trukk and do nothing.

At this point, Bart mentions the deff kopta's "hit and run" ability, which I must admit I don't think I even knew about... I give it a shot and what do you know?? It works!! (thanks man, you're a good sport!) They bail on the avatar and head toward the War Walkers. The rest of the grot line neatly sorts itself out following Buzzy's instructions and leaves the Harlies in the center of a massive firing zone. The second squad of gretchin enters the fray and marches towards the Eldar objective.

While I'm prepared to unload my entire army on them, 19 hits from the two grotzooka's is more than enough to do the trick. Rokkits from the Deff Kopta's take out one of the War Walkers and assault damages the other (and more importantly pins it in combat). Freed from the need to shoot the harlies, heavy stubbers take out two more guardians.

Turn 4

The Eldar now shift to secure a draw... if they can hold on to their objective... everything I've done so far will be for naught! The Fire Dragons continue around the right flank in hopes of drawing some of the ork force off the main objective.

The assault continues on the flank. The poor walker is now weaponless and immobile... but still alive!

The orks once again arrange themselves into a "ring of fire" with the aim of eliminating the Avatar. The bike herd (Nob) boldly zooms past the avatar in an attempt to take out the last of the guardians and finally silence the scatter laser!

The gambit succeeds!

Turn 5

The Fire Dragons finally emerge around the back and have a view of some juicy targets, while Eldrad and his Dire Avengers seek vengeance for their fallen brothers.

Concentrated shiruken fire shreds the last bike, alas... the Fire Dragon's shots go astray. In assault, the koptas finally take down the last War Walker.

Seeing victory slip away, the orks make a massive push for the Eldar objective... they must contest it at least!

The third squad of grots finally arrives right in front of the Fire Dragons! They shoot and kill one of the eldar, as do their armored companions in the Kans!

The eldar, unnerved by this sudden show of grot battle acumen... take flight!

The orks Waaaaagh!, run and assault the last unit of Eldar!

And when it's over... only Eldrad and 2 noble Avengers remain standing (but their objective is contested/lost).

Results

Eldar: 0 objectives
Orks: 1 objectives

Ork victory!

Another very fun game! I really though Bart would get me this time. Those scatter lasers could have shredded everything I had... but he had some bad rolls and the cover kept getting in the way, preventing him from really focusing his attacks as I tried to do. I must admit this army performed far better than I thought it would. Never thought I'd be so excited about BS-3.

Have another game this evening... 2k vs. a new opponent... hmmmm... what army should I bring?? *strokes beard, furrows brow*

Thanks Reiko, they're getting there. I'll have grot deff koptas soon, then I'll be all set!

@CT: Thank you! Yes, it does make it interesting. I'd be more of a problem to plan for than most of the guys as I can field 7 different armies.. but for the most part I've been sticking to my orks... just because they're fun and haven't seen any action in quite a long while. They also have only one other league player that runs orks, so they're kind of a novelty.
