Settling into my new role with Spiral Arm, it's time to get my own forces of the Maelstrom onto the tabletop. The Karist Enclave has really caught my attention and so I've decided to build these models first. It is the combination of their use of Cybel energy along with the harnessing of Angel creatures that make the Karist such a deadly foe, and the models certainly represent this dynamic.
Assembly went really well; the detail is crisp and what few mold lines I found (I think 3 or 4 in total) cleaned up very neatly. with so many spare parts as well, I decided to make a couple of scatter terrain, from unused Angels. These will be strewn around my battlefield where the Karist force are ambushed by a nest of Angels in the first few games I have to learn the rules while I build the Epirians.
Here's everything built so far:
I'm hoping to get them primed today, and then get started on the painting, although I've still to settle on a paint scheme.
Cheers
JP

Painting time has been tricky to find due to family illness but I've made a little progress. All the Karist models have now had their armour sections done. I've recently switched to Vallejo Game Colour as I fancied trying a new range.
1. Prime Grey
2. Paint Wolf Grey
3. Wash with Army Painter Strong Tone Quickshade Ink
4. Drybrush Bonewhite
5. Drybrush Elfic Flesh
6. Drybrush Off white.
Now that has been done, it's onto adding a bit of colour to the model. I've been going back and forth between different schemes (Dark green shoulder pads / orange shoulder pads/knees etc) and finally I've decided on a scheme similar to the one in my profile pic.
So next up will be:
1. Black uniform
2. Hexed Lichen eyes/cybel generators
3. Squid Pink highlights for the eyes / cybel generators
I'm going to work on just a squad at a time now in the hopes of creating some really nice units - prefect for taking along to your local game store to show off
But in the meantime - whatever can I make with all this...

yeah,
Your Karists are looking great
Quite excited about what you make with all that Terrain stuff?
One point of note is check your plastic packaging isn't too thin or too bendy.
If it bends too much paint will break and flake off, and you want it to be durable and what not...
I had this with some eldar terrain i made a few years ago :(
Panic...

Work continues, albeit a bit slower than I'd like, on my own models. Here's where my Karist are up to now:
All the main armour is done, I just need to finish blacklining the second Adult Angel, then it's on to adding the purple/pink hues of the cybel energy to everything, a touch of silver for the weapons, basing and done.
With the end in sight (hope to have them done by the end of the weekend) it's onto the Epirians, and here they all are assembled and primed AP Army Green. Still working out a scheme in my head but I'm thinking something akin to the Colonial Marines uniforms in Aliens.
And if that wasn't enough, I've been building some terrain. These just need to be sanded, sprayed and drybrushed before fixing to MDF bases.
And for those wanting slightly more sturdier suppression tokens, I've glued mine to MDF bases, sanded them, black edged them all and coated with anti-shine varnish. Tough as a rock now and can take a good handling during games.
My personal models will have to take a backseat for a week or so now though as I have both factions to paint up ready for Salute and Adepticon - you'll be able to watch my progress over on the Facebook page and group and later on (re: in a few weeks time) read a few articles on the website about painting models for an event.
Cheers
JP

Looking great JP! I thought just cutting, gluing and blacklining all those suppression tokens was quite enough work, now you've gone ahead and added full on bases. Awesome Looking forward to those articles too.

Consider the suppression basing idea pinched! Are they the standard 25mm ones - these ones?

Did you put all the suppression tokens on to 25mm bases? (ie did the larger tokens for on) I ask because I've got endless numbers of old slotta plastic 25mm bases that I can use to pinch the idea too

The large ones are 40mm bases, medium are 25mm and small are 20mm.

Hmmmm. Good to know. Don't have any 20mm, but dogs be some 40mm. I'll have to see whether it looks odd to have the smaller two sizes on the same size base. Thanks for the info. They look great by the way

Started work on the Epirian force for Salute. Here they are all primed with Army Painter Crystal Blue. I'll be adding silver weapons casings and plenty of contrasting black/yellow hazard warning pipes, stripes etc. An ink wash will darken this down, and with highlights I think will look pretty impressive.
What do people think for basing? Some urban detritus - broken pipes, razor wire that sort of thing? Or keep it simple with a clean drybrush and some tufts?

The scheme sounds more urbanish, so then I'd say urban basing to match. Would be a bigger job than simple basing though, so I guess that counts for something.

The colour looks good.
Hard to tell from that angle, but the legs on the right hand Hunter look a little awkward.
For basing... Something grassy would be a better contrast for the blue than urban rubble would be.

Scheme sounds good, and I agree with Oddball, an urban base would probably look better.

It took a little longer than expected due to my recurring carpal tunnel syndrome but I've finally got the gaming models of the Karist faction finished for Salute:
You can see the primed buildings in the background waiting patiently for their turn on the painting table. It will come, but first the Salute Epirians.

First model of the Epirians done as a test scheme. Looks better at tabletop distance as opposed to in your face like this, but I'm pretty happy with the result - and it was fast to paint too, which will help get the rest of the force done in time for Salute.
