Subject: Dakka Painting Challenge Round 63 May 2020: Old-School Cool
Welcome all to the 63rd round of the Dakka Painting challenge. For the unfamiliar, this is a friendly painting competition open to members of all skill levels and experience, whether your entry is your first or you thousand-and-first time painting miniatures. Each month, finished entries are collected into a thread where the community can vote on their favourite pieces, and those votes go towards an annual overall League that runs for 12 rounds, ending in February next year.
This month, the theme is Old School Cool. Lots of you have been asking for a chance to get out your retro minis, and this round for them! If you don't have any older models, fret not, the theme also extends to ones that have been sitting on your to-do pile the longest, or that represent something aged, outdated or historical in the setting from which they originate.
How To Enter
- This month, you may enter up to five models as a SINGLE ENTRY, and are permitted one entry per member per month. If you enter multiple models, they should ideally be related in some way, such as part of the same squad, unit or scene if you are doing a diorama - You MUST post a 'proof' picture of your entry in the thread of the state it was in before you started working on it; this must be either unassembled, unpainted, primed or coated a single colour. Entries that do not submit a valid Proof Picture will not be eligible for voting. - After this, you may post WIP pictures in this thread and your own if you wish, and on completing the entry, you may post up to 6 final pictures IN THIS THREAD that will then be used for voting. Please note that pictures in a montage or collage picture will be considered individual images for this purpose, so while these types of presentation are certainly acceptable, please keep the image limit in mind when compiling them. For example, a collage of 5 images and one separate image would count as your 6 picture allowance.
So What Do I Win? - Points... and points mean... bragging rights for the next month! Following the vote, points will be awarded to every entrant. This year, the Points you receive will be equal to the Percentage of Votes your entry receives in the final Voting thread; if you get 10%, you get 10 points, if you get 6% you get 6 points, so on and so forth.
These points will be used to form a league table, which will be updated month on month as the results come in.
How Long Do I Have? This challenge begins 1st of May and will end at midnight UK time on the 31st of May. After this, I shall compile the finished entries into a new thread, and voting will run for 5 days.

Not the most retro, but I have had the model about 15 years or so. I have a use for it in my my DnD campaign, so it’s my entry for the month: Witch King on Fellbeast:

Not 100% sure at themoment, but as I'm currently doing some work on these old school sentinels I'll try and get one or both done for this. May sub in something else...
Throwing my hat into the ring with this one, too, fellas.
I don't know if I'll even get remotely close to finishing this - seems like the lockdown wave could hit here any day. Who knows. On top of that I've got some ambitious ideas (and I'm full of cheap wine right now, ooh la la).
But I'm staring down the barrel of a 5 day national holiday where we're all supposed to just stay home, followed by coming back the following Thursday to find out what the hell is happening this month. As such, I'm probably going to have a bit of free time.
So, my entry, is a model only a few months younger than myself, as far as I'm aware. Picked her up second hand a little while ago, and I've been wondering how to fix 'er up and add her to my Genestealer cult.
Wish me luck. I think I'll need it. Or maybe more wine... wonder if やまや is still open...
If anyone (I guess in Japan?) has any genestealer arms just lying about, needing a home... I have an offer.

Some pretty old models considering its 2020, also had them for 11 years and recently re-stripped. Plus, Terminator Armour is old, right?
@Para, did you mean to put in that this month is "as many models as you like?" Just wondering because in the other thread you said back to 5 limit and just want to double check!

I'm in with some ancient Harlies. Got those off eBay a while ago as these are different models than the ones from the Harlies box I already got as a teen in the 90ies ... and the minis from the box set are either already painted or half-painted or I can't find them right now, so here we go ^^

I got the enthusiasms today, it seems. Grabbed this guy who was sitting on my painting desk for a while (and who'd been hanging around unprimed for at least five years and three moves), took a proof pic:
and managed to motivate myself to just paint him straight through in about two and a half hours:
"The Gor-Gor" from Reaper miniatures Dark Heaven Legends line. I suspect he's a decently old sculpt as well, though I can't figure out where I could find that information, having lost the blister he came in.
Will probably replace these photos later in the month, now I see them full size blown up I didn't realize how out of focus they were, but if I don't, they'll do well enough as final pics. Definitely willing to hear what bits I screwed up or could do to make him come out better.

Oi! Some of us are still figuring out what to paint....coming in here with your finished work.
I'd say a bit more work around the face would bring him up a notch. The eyes could stand out more, maybe change tones a little on the ears and the horn - although those are really dependent on how you view them with regards to the anatomy of a horned zoat rhinotaur.
I'd like to throw my hat in. The model isn't exactly old, but he represents something quite old. I'll go with just one Thunder Warrior. I'm still working through the modeling process of more, but I think this guy is about 90% done with modelling and looking for some paint.

I got a bit excited and started, to my horror my stupid AP can ran out of propellant, there is still paint in the can but I dont have any butane to refill the paint can (yes it can go wrong if the receiver doesn't close after you remove the gas)
Damn, so much choice! I have some old inquisitor models, some vintage lord of the rings stuff, and a few talisman bits, but they're going to have to wait because this month is all about chaos dwarves! Always wanted to do some CD. These guys are going to be part of a fantasy squad for next year's Golden Demon. I'm hoping to finish 3 of the 5 this month, and am pushing non metallic metals hard this year. Re entering the daemonsmith I didn't paint last month. New photo for proof, hope that's alright.

Here are some 6mm scale "VF-1A Valkyrie" models, from Palladium Books' Robotech RPG Tactics line. The robots can transform into different modes, so each of these models represents the same vehicle, just transformed. These miniatures are relatively recent, from 2014, but the mecha designs are from the 1982 anime Super Dimension Fortress Macross, so I think they qualify as "Old-School Cool."

I think there's another dive into the cardboard archive before I commit, but these two groups are the frontrunners right now. One is classic Arbites, the other is mostly 2nd ed. "guard" and "adventurers" with the model from the Chainsaw Warrior game in the mix. Who knows, maybe I do both and choose later?
I got these Chaos Centaurs when they were new, but as you can see, they've seen better days. If I get them done in time, I'll tackle the Chaos Champion, as well.

I'm going to stick my hat in with an old Season 2 (so, first expansion from about 6 or 7 years ago) Dreadball team, the Chromium Chargers (transforming robots). They've been sitting in pieces for ages: they're arguably the worst team in the game, and couldn't muster the energy to build them, let alone paint them! I'll submit 5 of them, though I'll be doing the full team. Unless I lose the will to live, and I throw in some unloved Dreadball cheerleaders or old metal Batman figs. Pics to follow, I guess
Automatically Appended Next Post: Mix of old figs, including the very first dB promo, Hector Weiss (Speedball 2 character)
Pile of bot parts, in classic Video Case Db storage.

Oh, this one is for me I want to join to competition with a pack of old death guard minis. There's a squads of plague marines, terminators, a chaos dreadnought, champ and mage. This is a part of my friends army, so it will be painted on tabletop level.

As I’m starting a new paint job that seems to fit this months challenge I thought I’d put my hat in the ring with these 2.
I hope they fit the criteria as they only have only a single colour over the primer when I started on them this evening. No worries if not, I’ll still enjoy painting themes much as much as I did as an excited spotty teenager!

Wales: Where the Men are Men and the sheep are Scared.
I'm going to take part this month with a mix of old and new with the Old being some GW Crusaders and the new being the SOB Sisters Repenta.
Trying to kitbash some more Crusaders but they will be a bonus if I manage it
Also going to throw in the Kitbashed Crusader I just knocked together. Its a bit ropey and i might try to shave the sheild down but I couldn't resist adding a plague doctor masked crusader to the list considering the time. .
I'll probably put up a proof pic tomorrow, but my current plan is to paint the contents of the old "Heroes of the Adeptus Astartes" set. Metal models for Marneus Calgar, Azrael, Dante, Logan Grimnar, and The Emperor's Champion. I think they are sufficiently old models to qualify. Azrael and Calgar even have the old-style banner poles, meaning I'll have to find and print banners for them (the current Azrael model has a sculpted banner but is otherwise identical).
My armies (re-counted and updated on 11/7/24, including modeled wargear options):
Dark Angels: ~16000 Astra Militarum: ~1200 | Imperial Knights: ~2300 | Leagues of Votann: ~1300 | Tyranids: ~3400 | Stormcast Eternals: ~5000 | Kruleboyz: ~3500 | Lumineth Realm-Lords: ~700
Check out my P&M Blogs: ZergSmasher's P&M Blog | Imperial Knights blog | Board Games blog | Total models painted in 2024: 40 | Total models painted in 2025: 21 | Current main painting project: Warhammer 40k Leviathan set
