2 really thin GS sausages twisted together? sort of like the rope in THIS ever-so-helpful thread.

Also for the hats just make a little baloon shape and then you do not even have to sculpt al the dreads as they get packed into the hat!

Never tried this, but my brain says it should work...
The thing that I always notice on dreds is that they're rough, almost knotted. I'd try doing a base in sand, complete to varnish, but without a model on it, then roll the 'sausage' on the base. The sand should leave a kind of random imprinting on it.
For tight braids, use that rope trick from above, that looks sweet.

I would suggest you bend a paperclip give it a nice natural wavy look cover with GS. Then get some nice close up pics of a dreadlock and take a toothpick/dental tool and actually poke/distress the GS. That should give it a decent texture to it suggesting hair fiber.

Yeah. Dreads don't look anything like twisted rope..... I think you'll be better off doing GS sausages and then running some sandpaper over it to give it a coarse texture.
Seriously though. Looks nothing like dreads.

Ok i tried the twisted style, looks awefull!!
So i think ill give the sand thing a try, i had a look at some pictures just know and each dread is different usually, so that should give me a bit of leeway.
Thanks again guys

After reading this, I realized that what I'd suggested amounted to "make your own sandpaper" This would probably be easier!
