Sadly, moments after this picture was taken, ash from Willie's cigar fell into the wheelbarrow.

All we found were his glasses, charred and still smoking, 200 feet away from the crater.

Absolutely stellar terrain work in here...
Im still reading through the thread, but I had something of a few questions:

How does the Orthodontic stone hold up to resin? That is to say, is it better/worse?
Why do you use it instead of resin? Cost? Dries faster? Better results?
Would it hold up to casting models or would you suggest only terrain?
And finally, until I inevitably think up another one, How durable does it end up being? Ive used plaster (cheap craft stuff...) before to poor results- the pieces shattered after only a little handling.

I do apologize if I repeated any questions youve already answered.
Keep up the great work!

Different. It can hold as much detail but is more prone to chipping. is plenty tough for tiled floors and such though.

 Ramos Asura wrote:

Cheaper, and much easier to clean up after, also does not wear out molds anywhere near as fast.

 Ramos Asura wrote:

It is VERY fragile when thin and unsupported.

Dental stone should hold up to handling better if it is thick enough in the main structural parts (min of 1/4 in thick for free standing pieces)

The Orthodontic plaster is about 6 times harder and denser than plaster of paris. To cast Hirst Arts blocks in Resin would be stupidly expensive.

OMG Dave, the casts look fantastic! I will have to pm you and work out how much I can grease your palm with to send me some :-) it's only scant weeks away from decent weather down here and that's always when my terrain bug bites me firmly on the ass!

Not to mention I did the most terrible, terrible thing any hobbyist should do when they have 4,500 points of marines!..... I got a copy of Cities of Death! now there's no hope for me at all..... I want/need an epic city board now! i've even been looking for parts to use, I love the gothic tower the spanish guy has made (I forget his name) and I found some 'roads' small cobblestone but should still work when put together, only problem is they're only 16cmx24cm so i'm gonna need a load of 'em! :-)

on a terrain note, can anyone enlighten me on the proportions of 1/35 scale compared to our heroic scale? I'm looking mainly at terrain accesories so crates barrels etc. would they look out of place amongst 40k terrain? considering the normal human populace is smaller than the marines? or will it just look tiny and out of place?

Since so many are curious, I thought I'd document what I'm doing:

I weigh out a cup of Powder 200g

Here I have pre-measured 4 pours, ready for a quick mix and pouring

Then I add 1/3 cup cold water, watch it bubble for 30 seconds

With this stuff, the more vigorous the stirring, the less air bubbles

Pour onto the ridges of the mold, let gravity and physics force the air out naturally

Putty Knife FTW!

The production line.

The Necromunda Project: Fallout @ 2012/08/27 02:41:12

Post by: SagesStone

I like the bases, they work really well for them.

As for what can take what your master has a soulstone cache which gets added to the amount you have agreed on for a game. That's the points you have to spend on a crew for the game, though it is good to have left overs for your master to use as they can help him out. I think the maximum he can have to use was 8 or something. It's been a while since I've read through that section though so could be off. But, if you have the points you can pretty much take anything from your own faction there. The main restriction I think comes into it is the rare thing; where on some models it might say "Rare 5" which simply means you can only have 5 at a time. If they die during a game and you can build more, it's fine just as long as it doesn't pass that limit.

Kirai has it on the spirits she summons every time something dies so she doesn't flood the table with a wall of them.

The Necromunda Project: Fallout @ 2012/08/27 03:05:28

Post by: dsteingass

Thanks guys!

Ramos can control any Construct from any faction, and he can also summon stuff and build spiders with scrap, and I've got 0 ranged units, only Ramos and his Avatar as casters really, He can ignore the Special Forces limit when they are Union assets, but all the rules for all my models are scattered throughout the 4 books.

While those dry, I finished construction of one wall

A little wonky at places until I gave up with PVA and started precision welding with CA and accellerator.

no, they are actually LARGER, 30mm. The dood has it backwards. 25mm is smaller than what we are used to, which is 28mm standard Heroic. GW stuff is 28mm with enlarged heads, hands, and weapons.

Found it on google so not sure.

On the site I found the box on they mention the contents like this.
Figures Stormtroopers Protectorate - 4 pcs.
Armlist Stormtroopers Protectorate - 1 pc.
Scheme of the assembly building - 1 pc.
Casting Design Bunker Builder - 3 pc.

So either they are multi part of just mean it comes with that many of each. That was the only scale shot I was able to find of their infantry to 40k.

ah RW... a bit slow on the uptake...

i can see that the buildings sprues could be of use ... sadly i don´t really see any use for the minis of these... they have a quite innovative assembly system totally unlike that from GW... but not really that conversion friendly... and totally out of question is in my opinion the idea of a kitbash... BUT their vehicles are top notch and one of these days i get me a coupla of these boxes... the walkers and the mini tracked ones...

by the way dave... i know you don´t want to hear that probably after painting... but that steamborg while awesomly painted has a horribly moldline gauging my eyes out

It's funny because I "complained" at how good of a deal the starter set was... I "complained" how cheap movement trays where... and I complained at how I want my stormtroopers... but my and GW have a loving relationship, I just nag at him all the time

I think it's the same as in professional sports when the fans complain that the management is making decisions based on money instead of the good of the team. I think it's the personal attachment that gets people (that's what gets me, at least). Also, I would be pumped if GW started giving away everything for free, but I get your point

A pile of rivetless burnt wood, and two rivetless FOAM bunker/pods with lightly riveted resin doors

The Necromunda Project: Fallout @ 2012/08/30 21:52:29

Post by: Viktor von Domm

oh.... these look sexy i amn not afraid to say so^^

the doors look very good specially!

and i had to pay a (in the end) small fee... which was worth it...

and there would have been no way you could have avoided it... in fact they made me open it in front of two officers... then a row started as i couldn´t say what what was worth... so i was chucked out of the office...to wait for them to do a research on the badger and the playmobil stuff... they estimated the parts... and came out with a price tag... the good part was that they had literally NO idea of all the modeling suplies... all those bitz were not their stuff so they ignored these.... if that would have registered on their radar... who knows...

and if you had lowered the worth on your from of declaration... then customs would have been even more suspicious as they already were... and who knows thy might have accused me of smuggleing... lazy buggers that they are... and do you know... the tag "gift"... this they usuallly ignore... as this gets abused way too often... so is without values for them... which i think is a violation for international mailings... after all those tags are there for a purpose...

Here is the guard tower that came with the Barracks

The ladder is crap though, it's so bad it needs covered over with something and a new ladder added for sure...horrible idea there.

well... i can only say for myself... but i had a very depleting day at school... lots of fruitful discussions and work there...and also we celebrated in a very quiete way the anniversery of my wife... this takes quite a lot of time so logging in on dakka happens a good deal later^^ ... but you are on to something.... tho i have no explanation for the rest of dakka^^.... also this opens up the question why YOU then have time^^... kind of counter-rotating of you

I agree, and it's about damn time, too! After all, some of the WFB plastic characters are possibly the best (unofficial) Inquisitor releases GW has done for a decade

The fact that you went straight for that comissar model made me crack up. That guy is so cool! I'll be painting mine to be used as a Lord Commissar in my Traitor Guard.

Yep Baiyuan. The skate park sections were on clearance for $7 each set, each set has different parts that can be fitted together in different ways. I'm going to hit all the other Meijer stores in town and see what sets they have. There is a set my local store didn't have, which is the other half of the one stairway piece, which is kind of critical to have, otherwise you've got a strange 1.2 stairway with a board nailed over half of it. I figured the ramps can all be covered with hazard stripes for tracked servitors or some other fluffy industrial purpose for al lthe inclined ramps everywhere. I'm thinking the half-pipe sets could be spammed for sewer pipes maybe?

Enjoy the gaming Anything in particular planned, or just random games?

$7!! The cheapest I found was £7, and that was a puny little crate/ramp. Most of the stuff I found was in the £20-30 range! I think I found a ramp that was £60. A ramp. Looks like the best deals were US e-bays where I'd be paying double the asking price to cover shipping, still seemed cheaper than most of the UK

Did see some interesting bits out there though, I'll certainly be looking into it at some point - more than enough going on atm without more inspirational bitz arriving

I'm not sure, all I know is that I now have a big-ass video card and 850 watt power supply that I can run stuff at Ultra High settings finally!!

Fallout looks amazing so far, so does TF2

Here are the skatepark sections I was talking about
http://www.simplifiedinternetdesign.com/skateboards/techdeck-skate-lab-p-rod-ramps.htm
supposedly thay make 8 different sets, but I've only found 2-#1s and 2-#2s so far. The half stairway in #2 is worthless without #3

Yep, that was one of the sites I came across

Those were the sets you got for $7? Don't want to hear you complaining about UK having good stuff again We just get the rrp dollar sign changed to a pound sign, and if we're lucky they don't mark it up a bit at the same time

Good find indeed, luck with finding #3

Yeah it looks cool, but it's not been released on PC, and I have a PS3, which I hardly ever play, not an xbox.

Those are some violent toys! Looks like a fun game, and it touches my heart to see people choosing PS3 over the Xbox (like me), because very few of my freinds do!

but all that is forgotten now as i see the bag of plenty was downed on your desk again^^.... so much eyecandy...again^^.... the guns galore from jake look very cool... and if you don´t have a inflated chest due the immense pride to have your own minis casted in front of yourself ... then i come around and slapp some common sense in you!!!!....

and those pews.... (had to look that one up by the way ) ... i am currently scratching my head to come up with a soon to be project of yours....no seriously... that will be awesome for your big cathedral thingy you have on your COD table...

The only problem with playing games, is after sinking hours and days into one, I've really got nothing to show for it, it makes me look longingly at the dark, lonely hobby bench to my left. I don't miss the painting bench behind me yet though

And I realized that I forgot the vent on the side of the Sunset Sarsaparilla machine too!

Both shot from my new Nvidia Geforce GTX 660i - notice Fallout 3 only renders things to a lower standard, but FO:NV has the better detail? Interesting...
I see how FO:3 now renders a LOT more distance than I'm used to, but the textures are still how they looked on my old pc.
Fo:NV is like playing an entirely different game. Did you know if you load up all of the DLC from FO:NV Ultimate Edition, you start with a grenade launcher and a ton of stuff??

Nuka Cola is still Thumbs Up though
I am VERY VERY excited, it is causing me great, impatient anxiety waiting to see Galorn's casts of that one too!

it makes me look longingly at the dark, lonely hobby bench to my left
that is quite promising... i see hobby work is due to happen soon enough then

and i think soon i will get me the game of the year equivalent of NV too...

and for some reason i cant really say how far i could look ingame... seems to me it was kinda endless... i know i could sniper with my hunting rifle quite good in larger distances in the end...not that you are supposed to...

In NV: with the Gun Runners DLC, you can custom build and modify the equivalent Varmint Rifle into one helluva sniper tool too! You save your shells, and you can do ammo reloading and modification too. In Hardcore mode, the ammo has weight. I haven't tried that.

I think I figured out a workaround abou the glitchy capcha system... I switched to a reg form that doesn't use it... for now anyway until I can figure out (or have a person with more expertise figure out what happened...)

You can also dehydrate and die in hardcore mode.

The Necromunda Project: Fallout @ 2012/09/11 12:30:53

There are lots of ways to die in Hardcore mode, sleep, starvation, etc.

And those damn wasps... -.-

Oh yeah, poison sucks even in regular mode, that's for sure

The Necromunda Project: Fallout @ 2012/09/11 12:40:00

Post by: SagesStone

Yeah, in regular I can walk through a wave of bullets and shoot bandits point blank at times. But, if I'm stung by a wasp I get to walk around trying to find a cure for the next couple of minutes before dying.

What amazing terrain you've created! I am inspired. Tell me, how do you paint your projects? Do you undercoat black and use an airbrush? If not, what do you do to make your Underhive stuff look so used and worn? What thickness of plasticard do you use to slot the bulkheads into? Is it very bendy? Keep up the great work!

The Necromunda Project: Fallout @ 2012/09/11 13:07:26

Post by: dsteingass

@jmw- Thanks! I use .40" or 1mm plasticard mainly, it fits, but you still need to clip the little knobs out of the channel. I use an airbrush, and I prime/undercoat a light color for brighter paintjobs (mostly miniatures, so I can see the detail), or darker for darker paintjobs. The darkness is added by preshading with the airbrush and a combination of washes/inks, depending on the look I am wanting. Always paint things to look brand new before weathering them down to get the best results IMHO.
