Yep. You seen the kickstarter in my sig? Theyre tooling for injection moulding using 4 way pulling moulds, so you can get even more undercuts in there. Impressive.
Absolutely stellar terrain work in here...
Im still reading through the thread, but I had something of a few questions:
How does the Orthodontic stone hold up to resin? That is to say, is it better/worse?
Why do you use it instead of resin? Cost? Dries faster? Better results?
Would it hold up to casting models or would you suggest only terrain?
And finally, until I inevitably think up another one, How durable does it end up being? Ive used plaster (cheap craft stuff...) before to poor results- the pieces shattered after only a little handling.
I do apologize if I repeated any questions youve already answered.
Keep up the great work!

Different. It can hold as much detail but is more prone to chipping. is plenty tough for tiled floors and such though.
Ramos Asura wrote: Why do you use it instead of resin? Cost? Dries faster? Better results?
Cheaper, and much easier to clean up after, also does not wear out molds anywhere near as fast.
Ramos Asura wrote: Would it hold up to casting models or would you suggest only terrain?
It is VERY fragile when thin and unsupported.

Dental stone should hold up to handling better if it is thick enough in the main structural parts (min of 1/4 in thick for free standing pieces)
dsteingass wrote: The Orthodontic plaster is about 6 times harder and denser than plaster of paris. To cast Hirst Arts blocks in Resin would be stupidly expensive.

This is enough to get me into Chaos!
I even like these Marines' poses!

Funny, I was thinking just the opposite: http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/472174.page Love the models, just don't want to pay that much. Maybe when people start selling them on ebay (not like anyone would do that- look at the one in the trenchcoat, he's epic!)
OMG Dave, the casts look fantastic! I will have to pm you and work out how much I can grease your palm with to send me some :-) it's only scant weeks away from decent weather down here and that's always when my terrain bug bites me firmly on the ass!
Not to mention I did the most terrible, terrible thing any hobbyist should do when they have 4,500 points of marines!..... I got a copy of Cities of Death! now there's no hope for me at all..... I want/need an epic city board now! i've even been looking for parts to use, I love the gothic tower the spanish guy has made (I forget his name) and I found some 'roads' small cobblestone but should still work when put together, only problem is they're only 16cmx24cm so i'm gonna need a load of 'em! :-)
on a terrain note, can anyone enlighten me on the proportions of 1/35 scale compared to our heroic scale? I'm looking mainly at terrain accesories so crates barrels etc. would they look out of place amongst 40k terrain? considering the normal human populace is smaller than the marines? or will it just look tiny and out of place?

That would be KM2500 (the spanish guy)
The Pegasus hobbies accessory bits look about right I believe they are 1:48...
BTW the first test cast of the "dusky Rootbeer" machine is done. I'll be posting some side by side pics of the master+ the 1st cast in my thread momentarily.
@Nerd Thanks man! PM me what you need, we'll figure something out! I can weigh and ship from the shop here now, even internationally, we can get what you need in your budget
1/35 accessories are perfect for our heroic 28mm figure size. The fence kit I built was 1/35, the crates stowed on the Orkmower are 1/35, they are perfect.

so these things are called putty knifes? god to know...
and the production line looks very good... i like your way of getting rid of the airbubbles... good thinking there!
would you say that this whole business with casting and mixing plaster is possible without a scales? i don´t own one and i think without one it would be way more complicated to achieve stable quality? what´s your opinion?
those miniers are a nice thing... aren´t we all like minis that don´t look too much like fighting all the time?
oh and i cross my fingers for your auction to go well...!
Thanks Vik! I want to use a green and bronze chaos scheme on the Steamborg and the arachnids. The Rail Golem I want to try OSL from his chest vents, the MIners will just be in dirty mining gear
lol.... the peeps i currently work with or those that educate me always use the term "exciting" lol.... kinda a word for everything they can´t find words for^^
Well we'll worry about that when we get to it, for now..The Steampunk Arachnid swarm bases
Magnetized, so the spiders can be broken up in-game Now I just need more 30mm bases for the single spider option
Automatically Appended Next Post: They are all primed now, I still have 6 more spiders and a Brass Arachnid unbult. I'm not sure if it's legal to take what with what yet, I need to read the soulstone stuff a bit more.
As for what can take what your master has a soulstone cache which gets added to the amount you have agreed on for a game. That's the points you have to spend on a crew for the game, though it is good to have left overs for your master to use as they can help him out. I think the maximum he can have to use was 8 or something. It's been a while since I've read through that section though so could be off. But, if you have the points you can pretty much take anything from your own faction there. The main restriction I think comes into it is the rare thing; where on some models it might say "Rare 5" which simply means you can only have 5 at a time. If they die during a game and you can build more, it's fine just as long as it doesn't pass that limit.
Kirai has it on the spirits she summons every time something dies so she doesn't flood the table with a wall of them.
Ramos can control any Construct from any faction, and he can also summon stuff and build spiders with scrap, and I've got 0 ranged units, only Ramos and his Avatar as casters really, He can ignore the Special Forces limit when they are Union assets, but all the rules for all my models are scattered throughout the 4 books.
While those dry, I finished construction of one wall
A little wonky at places until I gave up with PVA and started precision welding with CA and accellerator.
Well, probably would have helped if I'd spelt it right, I was going for Harold Lloyd, although I actually meant Buster Keaton - perils of posting at 4 AM
I really like where you are going with all the Malifeaux Stuff, Dave. I was wondering, though, I really like some of the models but my FLGS owner says they are waay smaller than 28mm Herioc standards. Is that accurate?
no, they are actually LARGER, 30mm. The dood has it backwards. 25mm is smaller than what we are used to, which is 28mm standard Heroic. GW stuff is 28mm with enlarged heads, hands, and weapons.
10 pages caught up. Too much to comment on, but highlights were the massive pile of crack you scored and the Hirst casts you are working on. Glad you had fun at GenCon.
Wanted to say thank you for the supply drop. I'm staggered and awed. Really, thank you so very much. Will take pics and post as soon as I get some down time. Will try to make some tonight.

for now i have to say... the best skin you have done for now... without a doubt... you are now a really serious mini painter... even if this sounds a bit demeaning to your earlier works... which it isn´t indeded to be... but still this looks verrrrrrry good!
and... i have been too leached out yesterday to be online... but these last coupla pages have been very entertaining to behold... very cool work you are currently chucking out dave!

The mortar lines all match up, the illusion is that the edges aren't yet sanded, they bulge so I could maintain the mortar lines and odd irregular or damaged castings from the earlier "plaster" days
yeah me too. they are dirt cheap. I want to see those building sprues first hand. I picked this up for $24 on ebay- the castle panels seem useful.
sprues

heh..Their legs look slightly too long in proportion to their torsos unless they are genetically modified to play basketball or something. Are they one-piece not_u? Or multipart?
i can see that the buildings sprues could be of use ... sadly i don´t really see any use for the minis of these... they have a quite innovative assembly system totally unlike that from GW... but not really that conversion friendly... and totally out of question is in my opinion the idea of a kitbash... BUT their vehicles are top notch and one of these days i get me a coupla of these boxes... the walkers and the mini tracked ones...
by the way dave... i know you don´t want to hear that probably after painting... but that steamborg while awesomly painted has a horribly moldline gauging my eyes out
Is the release this saturday? I wouldn't know, because I have a fething SUBSCRIPTION to WD, which entitles me the HONOR of waiting a fething week after everyone else can go buy their fresh copy before mine comes in the mail.
I bet that's a game store that got an early shipment and they are hoping to get folks to pay a crap-ton on ebay..OR..They don't have it yet, but started the auction that runs for 5 days, then they get 3 days to wait before shipping when they get their copy the cultists can go right in the mail.
well.... i think i speak for many... i would have still preferred to have another army featured than the everpresent marines... i can live with chaos... but DA? hmmm....
If I had to pick/collect/paint/play with a Marine army, I'd pick Black Templars, just because of the icons and bling they have is the coolest IMHO. The Chaos Dread actually looks like it could move quickly and bring the hurt to the Imperial walking port-a-potties
Why do we consider everything GW does as "evil"? If any other company does that it's called "marketing" and it's ok? I think people would still bitch about GW if they started giving everything away free TBH.

It's funny because I "complained" at how good of a deal the starter set was... I "complained" how cheap movement trays where... and I complained at how I want my stormtroopers... but my and GW have a loving relationship, I just nag at him all the time

I think it's the same as in professional sports when the fans complain that the management is making decisions based on money instead of the good of the team. I think it's the personal attachment that gets people (that's what gets me, at least). Also, I would be pumped if GW started giving away everything for free, but I get your point
Heh..It just reminds me of a guy in the OT forums, he is always on some crusade to "put GW out of business, quit buying their products, blahblah"- and then you look at his gallery, and he has like 2 Doctor Who minis and that's it, his hobby life must be miserable and sad and lonely.
@Galorn- I need MOAR panels! Oh and Nerdfest wants some molds made and shipped to Oz, I've been meaning to take pics of the panels we have made and send them to him to pick which ones hee wants. Do you have something like that set up?

I know how you feel I got stung on some old night goblins from the states cost me half the cost again for some fat gakker to stamp a card, fethers
oh.... these look sexy i amn not afraid to say so^^
the doors look very good specially!
and i had to pay a (in the end) small fee... which was worth it...
and there would have been no way you could have avoided it... in fact they made me open it in front of two officers... then a row started as i couldn´t say what what was worth... so i was chucked out of the office...to wait for them to do a research on the badger and the playmobil stuff... they estimated the parts... and came out with a price tag... the good part was that they had literally NO idea of all the modeling suplies... all those bitz were not their stuff so they ignored these.... if that would have registered on their radar... who knows...
and if you had lowered the worth on your from of declaration... then customs would have been even more suspicious as they already were... and who knows thy might have accused me of smuggleing... lazy buggers that they are... and do you know... the tag "gift"... this they usuallly ignore... as this gets abused way too often... so is without values for them... which i think is a violation for international mailings... after all those tags are there for a purpose...
Wow your german customs guys sound mean! In the UK they usually dont give a crap unless it has a worth over £40 or isnt listed as a gift. At least in my experience.
well the guy i had to deal with probably thought he wanted to educate or teach me a lesson on behavior... but the female officer at the ned explained everything later on in a soothing tone... sometimes using women for coutre maesures is a good idea... if that guy too had to explain it to me again i would probably have caused quite a splash at the office there... i really can´t stand snotty know-it-alls with power to them...

Well I hope it wasn't too much..that's pathetic!. Was their hour of searching PLaymo parts worth the fee they got? After all, they were made there in Germany to begin with, and they already made the export tax money, now they are taxing them again?? That's the kind of gak that causes revolution!
Here is the guard tower that came with the Barracks

I definitely like the idea of tall city buildings with skywalks at different levels! Take That Steampunk Skirmish game, look at the gae advantages and beauty from those things!
Niiiice Dave, the MAS stuff is cool as! all it needs is some rough coat and a 40K esque paintjob and I'm in lol you certainly did get some supplies! I can't wait to see what you magically create from all the goodies? speaking of goodies, i like the bunkers a couple of pages back, they look great where did they come from? perhaps you could make some yourself and use these as doors? http://www.coolcastornot.com/b127-war-game-resin-base-the-gate-p-1286.html I think they'd come in handy for you (or any other Nerd for that matter)

I agree, and it's about damn time, too! After all, some of the WFB plastic characters are possibly the best (unofficial) Inquisitor releases GW has done for a decade
The fact that you went straight for that comissar model made me crack up. That guy is so cool! I'll be painting mine to be used as a Lord Commissar in my Traitor Guard.
I already painted my first batch of cultists, btw. They're in my World Eaters thread, in case anyone's interested.
Oh hell yeah that looks COOL! I've never really been fond of the laser cut wooden stuff but I'll be watching closely to see how it turns out painted, and the cultist looks better than I thought it would in grey!
Kraut- Yep, he is the coolest one fer sure! -I'll check yours out shortly!
I like to think of him as once belonging to the Delaque clan rather than a Commissar
And these are the best unofficial Munda Releases in years! Proof! One will get a headswap though, the different angle doesn't help much

Aside from the sergeant those marines were Damn near impossible.
And D, I don't know whether to turn the cultists into Delaques or to keep them as cultists... Decisions decisions. Whatever you do with them will look stunning I'm sure.
I am just going to leave these cultists as designed, the other 8..well,,anything can happen! But I think I might like to actually play the game in this box!
im sooo pissed, this guy was going to sell me all his cultists for 20$.. than as I got ready to pay him he backed out.. there goes instant munda models...
there are some nicer priced versions on ebay UK i´ve seen... rangng arond 19 pounds... P&P included... you might want to strecth out yon tendrils a bit further than the US then
and if i was gangpressed to play a marine army...DA is a hell lot less dumb than blood maniacs or what they call themselves
i fell into that trap quite often already^^... they say you live you learn... but thinking which is needed for learning often is done with other stuff when i sees shiney grey plastic
Dave, that catwalk is fething cool. I too am putting my DV together and I absolutely love the cultists. I am thinking that a second box is gonna be in order but am waiting to see.....
Are those meant for those finger skateboards? I know my brother was into that, im just trying to find the box with it all so I can "borrow" it for terrain
Yep Baiyuan. The skate park sections were on clearance for $7 each set, each set has different parts that can be fitted together in different ways. I'm going to hit all the other Meijer stores in town and see what sets they have. There is a set my local store didn't have, which is the other half of the one stairway piece, which is kind of critical to have, otherwise you've got a strange 1.2 stairway with a board nailed over half of it. I figured the ramps can all be covered with hazard stripes for tracked servitors or some other fluffy industrial purpose for al lthe inclined ramps everywhere. I'm thinking the half-pipe sets could be spammed for sewer pipes maybe?

enjoy the Emedia break Dave. the package should be on its way shortly.
Enjoy the gaming Anything in particular planned, or just random games?
$7!! The cheapest I found was £7, and that was a puny little crate/ramp. Most of the stuff I found was in the £20-30 range! I think I found a ramp that was £60. A ramp. Looks like the best deals were US e-bays where I'd be paying double the asking price to cover shipping, still seemed cheaper than most of the UK
Did see some interesting bits out there though, I'll certainly be looking into it at some point - more than enough going on atm without more inspirational bitz arriving
Those were the sets you got for $7? Don't want to hear you complaining about UK having good stuff again We just get the rrp dollar sign changed to a pound sign, and if we're lucky they don't mark it up a bit at the same time
Good find indeed, luck with finding #3
Haha, more power. Everything looks better with more power.
Yeah, they apparently didn't sell and the store decided to clearance them out at $7 a set. I can't imagine why, skateboarding with your fingers...um..oh wait...yeah that sounds boring
Those are some violent toys! Looks like a fun game, and it touches my heart to see people choosing PS3 over the Xbox (like me), because very few of my freinds do!
I was wondering if you fell off the toilet or something Vik! what...2 days no Dakka? LOL
I have an EPIC SUPPLY DROP to report!
This is it!
From Galorn!
The Sunset Sarsaparilla Machine!

Quite. am still tied up in funeral stuff (ish) I should be getting the next molds poured for the machines and such tomorrow...
but to tell you the truth... you too kept very quiet during these days.... that made me really worried...!
but all that is forgotten now as i see the bag of plenty was downed on your desk again^^.... so much eyecandy...again^^.... the guns galore from jake look very cool... and if you don´t have a inflated chest due the immense pride to have your own minis casted in front of yourself ... then i come around and slapp some common sense in you!!!!....
and those pews.... (had to look that one up by the way ) ... i am currently scratching my head to come up with a soon to be project of yours....no seriously... that will be awesome for your big cathedral thingy you have on your COD table...
I am a man of Science, I'm not normally into superstition beyond casual and/or joking, but I DO believe wholeheartedly in hobby Karma. If you give, you WILL receive, maybe not from the same person, but as a whole, or in general, what comes around goes around.
Nice drop Dave! cast looks the goods too! even loving the church pews! didn't realise I could even get them! I'm totally going to grab some and make a shrine now!.... damn you!.... maybe in honor of you it could be a mechanicus Rivet shrine?.....
Heyo guys hope all is well good to see stuff rolling on the desk enjoy the video games I too was swallowed by one for the better part of two months. I was playing The Secret World.
The only problem with playing games, is after sinking hours and days into one, I've really got nothing to show for it, it makes me look longingly at the dark, lonely hobby bench to my left. I don't miss the painting bench behind me yet though
Automatically Appended Next Post: And I realized that I forgot the vent on the side of the Sunset Sarsaparilla machine too! Both shot from my new Nvidia Geforce GTX 660i - notice Fallout 3 only renders things to a lower standard, but FO:NV has the better detail? Interesting...
I see how FO:3 now renders a LOT more distance than I'm used to, but the textures are still how they looked on my old pc.
Fo:NV is like playing an entirely different game. Did you know if you load up all of the DLC from FO:NV Ultimate Edition, you start with a grenade launcher and a ton of stuff??
Nuka Cola is still Thumbs Up though I am VERY VERY excited, it is causing me great, impatient anxiety waiting to see Galorn's casts of that one too!
Automatically Appended Next Post: It's all good here Bama! Bar's always open!
it makes me look longingly at the dark, lonely hobby bench to my left
that is quite promising... i see hobby work is due to happen soon enough then
and i think soon i will get me the game of the year equivalent of NV too...
and for some reason i cant really say how far i could look ingame... seems to me it was kinda endless... i know i could sniper with my hunting rifle quite good in larger distances in the end...not that you are supposed to...
In NV: with the Gun Runners DLC, you can custom build and modify the equivalent Varmint Rifle into one helluva sniper tool too! You save your shells, and you can do ammo reloading and modification too. In Hardcore mode, the ammo has weight. I haven't tried that.
I think I figured out a workaround abou the glitchy capcha system... I switched to a reg form that doesn't use it... for now anyway until I can figure out (or have a person with more expertise figure out what happened...)

Yeah, in regular I can walk through a wave of bullets and shoot bandits point blank at times. But, if I'm stung by a wasp I get to walk around trying to find a cure for the next couple of minutes before dying.
What amazing terrain you've created! I am inspired. Tell me, how do you paint your projects? Do you undercoat black and use an airbrush? If not, what do you do to make your Underhive stuff look so used and worn? What thickness of plasticard do you use to slot the bulkheads into? Is it very bendy? Keep up the great work!
@jmw- Thanks! I use .40" or 1mm plasticard mainly, it fits, but you still need to clip the little knobs out of the channel. I use an airbrush, and I prime/undercoat a light color for brighter paintjobs (mostly miniatures, so I can see the detail), or darker for darker paintjobs. The darkness is added by preshading with the airbrush and a combination of washes/inks, depending on the look I am wanting. Always paint things to look brand new before weathering them down to get the best results IMHO.

Dude.. im terrified of bees.. only because I have never been stung in my life so far, I've been told it dosent hurt much but still, the unknown is some scary gak
