I use an all-plastic superglue, which is basically just a superglue with a separate 'primer' or 'activator' that you brush on first.

The original building is a Plast Craft Games kit - the tile roof sections are corrugated cardboard with lines scored across the corrugations to create the tile effect. Surprisingly effective, and quite easy to replicate (some of the roof sections didn't fit properly, so I had to make new ones).

It would be if it was a better cast. I've been a little spoilt from working on Anvil and Maelstrom's Edge resin lately. This thing was a reminder that not everyone is as careful with their casting... It's coming together nice enough, though. A fraction larger than I was expecting, but still good enough for what I wanted it for.

Post by: Meer_Cat
You're making it look easy- but I know that each of those resin filings represents an ounce of blood, or at least 15 grams of tears to have achieved. I agree with Monkeytroll- looks like a very fun kit!

Post by: insaniak
A little, but not as bad as it would be if it was a heavier resin or (shudder) metal... and it's fairly wide, which helps with balance. Automatically Appended Next Post: Meer_Cat wrote:\...but what all filing was needed to make all that resin dust?
Most of that is actually from sawing the roof off - it originally had a fully-enclosed cab.
Mould lines weren't too bad - worst on the legs, and some flash around the engine. The bigger problem was that the mould appears to be a little run-down, and there were random blobs of excess resin all over the place. The worst was on the left foot. The space between two of the toes was completely filled in with resin, so I wound up having to remove one of the toes, cut away the excess resin and reshape the interior surfaces of the toes and then reattach the toe.

Cheers... This was a second attempt, as I had started out with dark green armour plates, and it just wasn't working. A quick do-over resulted in the guy on the right, and I'm much happier with it. Not as stealthy, but they should certainly stand out on the table
Still working out the best way to differentiate the Lieutenant. As a field officer, I don't want him to stand out too much, which is why modeling-wise the only difference from the regular troops is that he has two pistols instead of a rifle... So I've been mulling over whether to give him a helmet stripe, or some sort of marking on his chest armour or shoulder pad.
Leaning towards a marking on the shoulder pad at the moment, so that it's visible but not screamingly obvious, and maybe using the helmet stripe as an alternative down the track for denoting medics or other specialists.
77242
Post by: Sgt. Oddball
Just don't make it an "I'm the officer, shoot me here" type of marking Maybe the standard stripe on the back of the helmet? Medics could have a red cross armband.
I'm trying to find a really fast paint scheme for my secdef. My Epirian Contractor/Drone and Karist paint schemes just take way too long for me to keep up with the current rate of MEdge releases. Have some Broken to finish first though...
99
Post by: insaniak
That's the plan, yes
I wound up using the small rectangular piece in the middle of the chest - green for troopers, red for sergeants, yellow for the Lieutenant. Visible, but not massively obvious.
The force painted up to a basic tabletop standard:

Ok, I HAVE to reply, I am an absolute Dredd nutcase, progs galore, even have the bubble-gum from the 2 80's editions, several 1208's, beach towel (McMahon) & love Kennedy doing the artwork....do not get me started:-) Now the 1st Dredd visually was impressive but that's where it ended. Stallone was crap,, story was worse...taking his helmet off? Oh please. OK, Mean machine & the ABC warrior were excellent.... there's that. Watched it opening night in Leister Square London & my friend stole the poster from the bus stop for me & we counted down the days to opening night. Honestly, Urban was excellent as Dredd in the 2nd one. OK, I gotta stop..

Post by: insaniak
US$14 for a pack of three, which makes them about the cheapest option I've found for shipping containers, and with better detail than most of the more expensive MDF options. I don't recall what shipping was for the two packs I bought, but it wasn't excessive as they're lightweight and ship in a padded envelope.

And yes, they're awesome. Easy to assemble, and surprisingly solid.

To clarify, this is foamed PVC, rather than foamboard. It's a solid sheet of plastic, rather than foam and paper, so more durable than foamboard.
Snrub wrote:Whats the foamed PVC like to work with?
Really good. It cuts really easily, probably more easily and cleanly than heavy card does... it's like what you would get if heavy cardstock and foamcore had a baby. Sands well, and it grabs onto superglue like nobody's business. End result is really solid - much more durable than foam or card, and won't have to be sealed before spraying.
It's the ability to bend it that was particularly appealing, for getting some buildings with more interesting shapes. All it takes to bend is a little heat - for this first one I hit it with a hairdryer and bent it over an old formula tin, but I think that was a little too hot as it swelled up on some of the cut edges. Next time I'll try hot water.
106010
Post by: Meer_Cat
@Insaniak- gotta get me some of this foamed PVC to try- love what you're doing with it.
@Kid_Kyoto- welcome back Kid! The Space Ponies really started as a bit of a joke. I got a set of 12 from Tehnolog to do a set of 4 for my wife, who is very forgiving of my addiction/hobby (saves bottle caps, tolerates the smell of spray varnish, etc). But then, I figured, we have four real rescue Shetland sot model, so I could a set of 'normal' chibi ponies and maybe a set of 4 'superhero' ponies. Wirecat said something that suggested maybe using the last 4 as a weird type of Kill Team set. Too much fun!

Good thing Mantic just made those available again, your redesign of the raptor might get them some sales.
Also like the little flat runner board on the back, gives the big guys a place to stand on to get carried into the heat of the fight quicker.

I think your seeing the underslung bolt pistol barrel there. It fooled me at first as the drill tip above is out of focus.
Love the big sappy stick though .

Yep... you're right Theo.

The original weapon has two barrels. I sliced off the top one, drilled a hole into the gun, and then glued a broken drill bit in there. The surround at the base of the drill bit is a small piece of plastic tube.

Those Kaddar Nova's are snazzy. They give off a real ancient Egyptian feel to me, not quite sure why though.
Love the ruined outpost too. An abandoned, overgrown town/outpost/settlement has long been on my to do list.

Meanwhile, another blast from the past - Space Marine Quad Bikes were one of my most requested conversions back when I was doing commission work, but it was only after I stopped doing commissions (about 10 or 12 years ago now) that I finally got around to building one for myself! Painted with my usual 'not amazing but good enough for the table' gaming standard, for my Imperial Dragons Space Marine army.

Would that foamed pvc stuff be durable enough to serve as a base on its own?

It would be better than foamcore, but it's not particularly rigid as a flat sheet, which is why I still use Masonite underneath.

...and Brother fought Brother amidst the ruins of a dying world.
A little diorama put together for the Duel category in the Oz Golden Demon way, way back in (I think) 2002. It didn't make the cut, and looking back at it now, I can see why (That base! I would do that so very differently now...) but it was a lot of fun to put together.

That's a smashing space laser observatory!
I'm wondering though, how robust is it? Those clear plastic containers tend to have a fair bit of give in them and crack when squeezed to much. I mean not that you're gonna be doing pressure tests on it or anything, but I can just see it getting damaged easily. Have you strengthened it in any way?
That MEdge terrain sprue really is a versatile frame of bitz, that's for sure.

It's a fairly sturdy tub, and gluing it down to the masonite gives it a nice rigid base. There's a little bit of flex if you squeeze it, and squeezing too hard would likely pop some of the bits off, but for normal table use it's more than solid enough.

Planning... Because you can never have too many projects on the go at once, amiright?
Rackham Goblin Pirates that have been sitting in my to-paint box for about a decade, and a 1:50 Revell Viking Ship that my wife bought me for my birthday a few years back after I kept insisting that we should replace our car with a long boat... (It seemed like a good idea at the time)

It still is - sort of - and it is an awesome Skirmish Scale game - now called "Twisted" by Demented Games and can be seen here:
https://www.dementedgames.com/
That is, if that's what Insaniak was talking about...
...but maybe not, as I love the range, and don't recognize that model:
https://www.dementedgames.com/collections/guild-of-harmony
So, even if it isn't, check out this game - it's really, really good!
Some digging seems to indicate that GoH was the 'before' to the Demented Games that is the 'after'...
99
Post by: insaniak
Sort of... Sebastian Archer is the sculptor behind Twisted/Demented Games. Guild of Harmony was the brand name he originally released his own sculpts under, some years before Twisted came along. Most of the GoH models sadly appear to be OOP, and the Guild of Harmony name has been recycled as a faction in Twisted.

So, I realised last night that this thread has somehow been going for ten years now.
A lot has happened in that time. 10 years ago, I was doing commission conversion work and selling bits on eBay. When I needed a change from that, I moved to an office job that lasted considerably longer than I had expected, and towards the end was literally sucking the life out of me... and now I'm working for Spiral Arm Studios, doing all sorts of interesting things for Maelstrom's Edge. Along the way in there was a wedding, two kids, a couple of house moves, and all the other stuff both awesome and not-so-great that life puts in people's paths to see what happens. And somehow, after all that time, Wazdakka is still sitting in my work in progress box...
With all of that, this thread has turned into a bit of a sprawling monstrosity, and I apologise to anyone who has wandered in later in the piece and is wondering what the hell they've gotten themselves into. So this seems like a good place to retire this thread and start over with something fresh. There will certainly be plenty of new projects coming up to keep things ticking over, and to get the new thread started I have my Guild of Harmony lady, the long boat, and my Terra Firma pattern Repulsor, a raft of planned Maelstrom's Edge projects, and if time allows, Wazdakka to finally finish off.
Many thanks to all of those who have followed this thread over the years! See you (hopefully) in Chapter 2!
