My oldest just "HAD" to have a Theramin after she saw Sheldon on Big Bang Theory playing one so the wife bought it for her gift. I can only hope that I am struck deaf by the time it arrives in the mail!!

Speaking of flat..I'm glad to now be home in super-flat Indiana. The mountains and ocean were great out east, but this is my home. Vik, my building is still sitting here on the bench, also bugging me for updates. I still have tomorrow off work so stay tuned

its "repairable" just not immediately recast able. the front "door" hatch, one of the side vents, and the front molding cracked off. nothing a little glue, and GS cant fix.

Honestly, I miss being around the rolling hills of fall-line Georgia, whenever I go somewhere flat. I spent a year in Miami and everytime I saw the horizon, it looked weird. Plus the fact there were no real trees. And all the sand.[ForrestGump]It was this whole other country.[/ForrestGump}

Dave and I are are complete opposites. I'm a mountain man myself and dislike going places where I can see the edge of the world in every direction. It's also whey I don't like the ocean.

I grew up on an engineering marvel, The former Great Black Swamp
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Black_Swamp

Everything is laid out in perfect square miles thanks to the way they drained it. You can never see the edge of the world there, because there are patches of woods between the farmland everywhere on the horizon. The stars are always easy to see though (except in towns)

Sorry I have been away from Dakka. we had relatives staying for christmas, so loss of food and booze. Followed by betterment.

Lets see;

I grew up about an hour away from the say and I thought that was a real long distance, we would go maybe once our twice a year. We moved a couple of months ago to the West the land if Cider :-) we live about 6 mins from the coast and try to go atleast once a week now. :-) In fact I am working on the door tonight, if I went for a walk round the corner I could throw stones into ther ocean.

No hobby presents this year, it was all alcohol and super hero related which was good. Wait I tell a lie, I got a box of 3 space marines in the secret santa :-)

On a.side note I need to do more riveting.

Wow, it's refreshing to only have to go through 2 pages since I last logged on! And that was before X-Mas!

By the way, Hope you all have a great Christmas, and a Happy New year.

I was actually sad to see that there were not Zombies roaming the streets on the 22nd. :(

But on the bright side, I now have more ammo and more guns!

And Harbor frieght has sturdy Machetes that only need minimal sharpening for less than $4! A must-have for the Zombie Apocalypse!

My mind is blown, Dave, that warehouse is a work of art. It's been on the front page of the gallery for bloody ages now, and they really ought to just pin it there. Love your attention to detail, love the windows and the scale-transforming details, love the paintjob. I'm particularly honoured to have my name attached to it

Hope you've had an awesome Christmas mate - I'm hoping the fact that you've been quiet for a few days means that lots of fun and family times have been on the cards. Dunno how you have time for anything else with the speed at which you put out blinding models!

They are on the path to further unbalancing the game IMHO. Guard will probably only get plastic AA guns and stormtroopers, which are fine for defense, but I want my guard to do more than defend.

It is a bit silly, I will agree, especially when say Tyranids have no real Aircraft, especially no miniatures for it. Flyrants and gargoyles get shot out the sky in the face of vultures, or Chibihawks. 'tis a sad day. Oh, and hoping for plastic storm troopers is a foolish endeavor. GW hates storm troopers

They only just incorporated them with the 6th ed rules so most need to sit around twiddling their thumbs waiting to see if something gets done about it.

For Daemons my choices at the moment are put wings on a prince and have it breathe on them until the fliers are gone (once per turn, 4+ chance to do damage at all), or have pink horrors throw pebbles at it and hope for the best.

Like most things in this world, 40K is what *YOU* make of it. The campaign I just started doesn't allow flyers. We play 500 point games. We have a good time.

Apoc, Killzone, In the Emperor's Name, Combat Patrol, Cityfight, Spearhead. so many options.

Make fun happen.

Killzone, In the Emperor's Name, Combat Patrol, Spearhead

Hey Brian What are these expansions ? I haven't heard of them for some reason! is combat patrol the one that was in 4th edition rulebook?

Wasn't Combat Patrol the one intorduced in WD many moons ago in 3.5 or 4th ed? And then Killzone was the internet attempt to recreate it in 5th ed?

I think I'm missing what Brian refers to as "we"- I probably need a gaming group, or at least some friends who haven't gone and married, had kids, and/or moved away

So, I got the new Crusade of fire book. 2 special flier rules for guard, the rest is mostly Marine stuff..not really so special rules either, not even any new terrain pics, not to mention I need to have a Planetary Empires set to use the new campaign rules....

They are all variations that use the base 40K rules. Google search any of the terms for the rulesets.

Combat Patrol, AKA "40k in 40 minutes" or "Patrol Clash" uses a modified FOC and puts limitations (like no ordinance weapons).

Killzone, In The Emperor's Name, and a half dozen others are a "Kill Team" game, playing 40K on a Necromunda Scale.

Necromunda, Gorkamorka. Classic GW skirmish games.

Inquisimunda. Playing "Inquisitor" on the 28mm scale instead of 54mm. Search for Inq28 for even more.

Apocalypse, Cityfight, Planetfall, Spearhead. All variations on 40K, for specific scenarios. Spearhead, for example, is all about fielding a LOT of tanks.

-----------

My point is to never be constrained, and make your own fun. If you have no local group, then you have to go find them. I sat here in Boston for 3 years, before getting uppity and starting my own home-based campaign group.

I went got married waited 10 years had kids and waited until they grew up to about 10 years old. I grew my own group with house rules I dictate and play what I want when I want......Strangely I hardly ever play and just love modelling and painting. They just give me an excuse to collect extra armies. LOL

my point was only that there is an oversaturation of fething marine products already, why the hell does any Marine player NEED more? I understand the FW 30k stuff is unique, but the mainstream plastic line is just getting stupid big. The new landspeeder doesn't even look good at all, and I've played against one of the newer bumblebee fliers, they suck in-game.

The bias towrd the SM has always been a bone of contention, they get all the kit all the nice new shiny stuff and even get ridiculous rules to make them unbeatable.

BUT

the standard SM cost 16 points = 10 man squad 160 points with average of 5 shots on target

Guardsman cost 5 points each = 30 men 150 points with average of 10 shots on target

I agree completely with you that GW are unbelievably bias to SM, but I have seen some amazing luck happen for the enemy. I guess that is the factor there, luck. Everyone else has to rely on it except the blessed SM.

LOL, yes I know all to well, I have to paint more miniatures AND lose more games LOL
Fluffwise, if there were as many marines as there are miniatures for them, the nutless freaks would destroy all of the Imperial worlds themselves.

Do you remember WD once had a article on the ultramarines, it pictured the whole chapter, was cool. Mind you they would now be reduced to about 6 tactical units to allow for all the guys that have had to be retrained to fly this stuff!!!!!

I (probably wrongly) thought the chapters where 1000 men total. How many needed to crew these things??

I recon there are more than 1000 times that many ultramarines on earth right now!!!! LOL

I saw the 2D version of the hobbit since the 3D version always seems a bit darker and gives me a headache... I sort of think some scenes like the ridiculously long Goblin Town chase would have been a lot more interesting in 3D. As well as just being better eye candy.

Favorite part? The Dwarves were awesome. Gollum was not bad either. I was a bit disappointed with the design of Erebor (too cartoonish) but like the elf eye candy.

Also, parts of the movie made me seriously regret I was not tripping magic mushrooms at the time.

I can't tell you my favorite scene of that movie. My least favorite scene was the run of the mill chase scene with unrealistic action scenes thru goblin town. I swear... I am so tired of filmmakers having to jazz up scenes to make them more "movie-like."

And I'm tired of scenes that totally defy logic. Like:
Spoiler:
falling down a ravine, with a wooden platform that skates along upright, and then landing in one piece and everybody being a-okay. Oh! And then the fat guy falls on top of them! HA!!!! TOTALLY UNEXPECTED in this day and age. Ugh.

I still loved the movie.

Gollum was my favorite a very clear distinction between him and smegol that made me feel bad for the guy very well done, I definatly thought it was waaay to light hearted and goofy (but thats what I was expecting) hated the goblin king though, and I must say when I saw it in 3d i was amazed (not because of the '3d' part since I cant see that with one eye ) but because of the higher resolution or whatever was rediculously realistic, seemed like I was at a play not a movie

The trolls were my favorite bit from the book ever since I first read it as a wee lad. But I just couldn't bring myself to pay the $80+! they were asking for 3 plastic trolls and a campfire bit. The Hobbit box set was a gift to my son from my best friend for Christmas...I think it 'might' just be worth the price though, even more so at discount. I would love to have more of the goblin town scenery to build up a little maze for them all to do battle on...but they want $60 for a few plastic interpretations of bits of wood! I might just pass on it. I could do it with bass wood I suppose, but then there's the time investment...Curse you GW for making ridiculously overpriced toys that I still want to buy!

Do you have a reference image for the look you are referring too? I have noticed in some of GW's more recent elaborate board displays they have been using textured rock that I can assume come from molds like the ones woodland scenics sells.

Going back a couple pages, I agree w/ Brian- make your own fun. My game group is going flyer-nutty. Ok. I'm not going to worry about it much. Flyers can't hold objective and are far from invincible. And if I get annoyed enough I'll put a couple Aegis lines out and have that quad-cannon have a short chat w/ them.

There's also the issue w/ months of work on awesome terrain. It's just an exercise in modeling unless it has little toy soldiers running over it ever now and then.

Win or lose, I don't particularly care. I just want to play.

You should publish this thread in a hardback book and sell it, because it's full of great info and pics....once you reorganize your photos, it will make the thread much less useful for your fans and future aspiring terrain builders...

I started my gallery photos here on Dakka, for this very reason. As far as I know there is no limit to the number of images you can upload...and it guarantees everyone can see them (even at work). My company blocks all well known image hosting and social media sites (photobucket, facebook, Flickr, etc). Well, it seems you've made up your mind, I will definitely be on the lookout for any new threads you start up!

Yep, I'm using the Gallery for all new threads from now on, as painful as it may be to use....

Yeah, Lego has been working on a multi upload function for a while now. Its the one feature that annoys me about the gallery, i have no idea when the fix will be though.

I've really enjoyed this thread and have credited it to being the last bit of inspiration I needed to start my own. I've stuck with it and have learned a lot from you in the process.

The pictures you have posted will be missed when you do the re-org. Might any of them wind up in the Dakka gallery, or a link to your Photobucket gallery?

In any case, I had a lot of fun here and I'm looking forward to seeing whatever you do next.

Hails, Necromunda Thread. Your wordfame will travel far beyond you.

An idea for the walkways: you could magnetise the bridge sections while adding thin sheet metal rims to the edges of your platforms/gantries...that way you don't have polarity issues and can snap em on anywhere there's metal.

The Goliath Gangers had their new operation set up within a matter of weeks

And then they set out to re-purpose an old Mining vehicle ironically named after their own House Goliath

It has already been fitted with an ancient mining laser that still works, a heavy Stubber, and a massive Plow with vicious rock-crushing blades within.

(this journey is well-documented at my other thread http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/6060/500202.page) Starting about page 202

The Necromunda Project: Fallout @ 2017/05/09 23:18:16

Post by: dsteingass

You can build your own gangs, just substitute names on the guard lists. Same classes, leader, veteran, specialist, juve. Vets have BS4, and it's possible to go higher. Gear is done between rounds, elevation matters...that's as far as I've read. New box sets, like the Space Marine squads have a Shadow War sticker on the shrink. There are additional rules for almost every faction, including AdMech, so it's less-restrictive to gang lists

Priming on sprue is not a bad thing, it only tends to be a problem if you continue to paint the thing further and then when you clip it off there is a load of touch up to do.

I do like where GW are going with this, watching closely.

The Necromunda Project: Fallout @ 2017/05/13 04:17:04

Post by: dsteingass

Well, lookie here, I got SOME paint on, not done yet by any means.

I dont want mine to be just drybrushed, it seems a waste of this beautiful sculpting.

I also picked up a Ferrotonic Furnace kit

It has the OTHER walkway panels

I'll need to get all the panels, supports, and railing bits painted up to this same level before I paint further though. It'll match my other, more world-famous Necromunda Terrain in the end.

Post by: Camkierhi

It is looking good so far, and really great to see you painting.

GW have done it again haven't they, really nice terrain, that is just about irresistible. I will be scratching some similar pieces up, what sort of dimensions have they gone for, i.e. whats the distance between platforms, is it the 3" which seems to be standard these days?

The Necromunda Project: Fallout @ 2017/05/13 11:45:37

Post by: dsteingass

Same 3" that was standard for Necromunda, except these kit supports are 5" to facilitate you having to roll to see if you fall and take damage, I assume.

They are VERY detailed. Like the White Dwarf team, building their giant offshore oil rig last month, a LOT of these will be showing up just generically drybrushed without picking out the cables and pipes within the structures. I can see why one would do that, it takes a LOT of work, but it's totally worth the extra time and effort IMHO.

This kit excites me!

The small tractor is begging to be a Munitorum Lawn Tractor, I cannot be the only one to see this?

Yes! I have no idea why the autonomous servitor-operated cargo-handling system needs an ancient-design tool box full of tools designed for human hands, but the bits will certainly be coveted by many modelers

Because ....reasons no real good reason except they knew what human tools look like. Plus it makes me want to build angry marines even more so they can be used as close combat weapons

Thanks Doc! I Actually look forward to painting them a little bit most every night, and that little bit just makes me want to paint longer on my days off. That's some motivation I haven't had in the hobby for some time.

Good to hear your excited again . Wouldn't want you making any 1:1 scale replicas of yourself like married people tend to do.

I always thought of making a gang based on this family

GW of course...In the Grim Darkness of the Far Future...there is only self-drying GW Paint Pots, and they are expensive, so that's why they get mad when someone ruins their paint job

Once in awhile, GW creates an epic bit......

Look at that bit! That's a lovely bit! Limo? Train? Inquisitorial Cadillac?

That's a purty yellow there dave , sci-fi safety yellow in the grimey darkness of the far future.

Thanks Theo, hopefully, in the end, you'll be able to see that it was once a safety yellow.

Who knows?

I think I got the yellow to do what I wanted it to do

Not bad if I do say so myself.

The best part is that I can reproduce it successfully now too

Lovely yellow . In the middle pic, there's a huge brown patch on the bottom rim. Have you considered metal showing trough there, as if the paint had been chipped away?

The Necromunda Project: Fallout @ 2017/05/21 11:35:35

Post by: dsteingass

Thanks Khaine, I'm thinking the paint was scraped off a long time ago, so that scrape is now well rusted. If you look at pictures of real old industrial stuff, it never has a boltgun metal scrape unless it's a fresh scratch. There is much still to do yet. This chipping effect was the result of hours of color experiments that all failed until I got this result.

Thanks Theo! I thought I remembered reading in some novels, that birds were long extinct, so artificial birds were flying around an Imperial City.
