Try as I might, I am not able to bend tubing or piping into 90 degree elbows without kinking. The pipes and fittings are all Plastruct. I only ordered a few sample packages from my local hobby shop to see how I like them..And I do
Plastruct designates these tubes as TB-6
http://www.plastruct.com/pages/OnlineCatalogIndex.lasso The outer diameter is 4.8mm (3/16"), it is made of Butyrate Styrene, which is denser, has a thicker wall, and cuts without crimping or collapsing like standard styrene tubing tends to do and the fittings press-fit together.
They are only 1-2mm smaller in diameter than the riveted Pegasus Chemical Plant pipe flanges , and they are compatible for the most part (with glue).

Thanks for the pic LDD! Yep, that is what I needed
Automatically Appended Next Post: I'm trying to think what would make it look more real now. I need to learn this for when I start making my own terrain.
Yeah. I'm not that gifted either. I have one half-painted Delaque ganger, 5 terminators and one bike sitting on my table waiting to be painted. And I haven't picked up a brush in months.
Fast? I don't know, I thought I was taking an unusually long time with this one TBH. There isn't really a secret, just the usual measure, cut, glue. If you are finding yourself sitting in front of it staring, thinking, you're probably not in the right frame of mind to be hobbying and should take a break.
Not cheap eh? $.50 each an elbow, but they sure as gak look the part...and almost $10 bucks for a pack of 9 pipes! Plastruct has some good quality stuff, but you do pay for it.
This building is looking so great, I'm getting inspired to work on my Necromunda terrain this week. Dug out all my scenery making supplies, pipes, tubes, rods, strips, and sheet styrene...forgot I had as much as I do.
That looks excellent dude! like really excellent! like so excellent i want to move to the states and marry it excellent! so excellent in fact that I want to have that excellent building's babies! and those babies would be excellent and have more excellent baby buildings and it would just be..... excellent!
and yep, that is a 'cool cast' of a lathe right there! lol :-)
You're done and i'm starting lol! that is looking so good! I like the way you use the spray to blend in for weathering dave! I will try that myself when I paint my factory i just started!....... what factory?..... the one i think you'll be very pleased with in my blog! :-)
That's awesome, the building looks like a kit.
Every time I visit your blog I feel a strange compulsion to start Necromunda and build terrain! Sadly not many people in my area are into it.... and terrain and I aren't the best of friends..
Well, since Dave's seen my blog recently I think he won't mind if I just leave this here to show you how he inspires me! it's all w.i.p but with a few tweaks and more browsing of this here blog i'll be pumping out sweet terrain!

and that =]_= Grafitti... totally awesome!!!!
Thanks Vik! Feel free!- But I turned off voting because I still want to add more washes and weathering on top of the graffiti
Dude thats amazing! (and lucky you for having a job that lets you doodle all day! ) Absolutely awesome graffiti concepts- I really want to see more terrain like this!
I really like the final build, but im conflicted over the bright yellow bricks- The weathering through spray is excellent, and I love how it looks like the bricks really are individual- showing slight variations between one another (the =]_,= graffiti picture shows this best, I think...). I also love the little details like the crates and burnt out snack machine! Though Im not 100% sold on the golden building. About 75% sold I guess, but Im sure Ill come around not too long from now!
I know you were saying you were gonna add more washes- Whats the final hue gonna be like?
Nope! I was a rotten kid, but I never spraypainted any buildings.
I just used Google Image search for styles the first letters and went from there
Then I just redrew it on the brick with a sharpie pen, then painted inside
Thanks for all the support guys!
I will fix the bricks before it's all done, I promise
Yay! i've been honored in Dave's blog with the perfection of a sharpie! (I love those pens!) I feel I have truly 'arrived' now! I am a man, an elder of the tribe! :-)
and your Graffiti is looking wicked too, I have another little humorous piece up my sleeve for next week! you'll love it lol! :-)
Oh man that is good! I love the idea of using your mates names! a very cool idea and executed to perfection by you I need to do some riveting big time so i can join the league!
I like how you've made each tag look like someone different has done it! the 'not santa' addition is and what have you done for your broken panes? sorta looks like melted plastic? it works well though as if it's the reinforced glass with the wire through it to stop shattering? was that the idea?
and thanks for the tip on building an aircon unit when I get the billboard finished I'll work on the factory!
Your rivet work so far is enough for my endorsement Nerd!
The windows are just a piece of old inkjet overhead transparency film I had stashed away for years. Just cut to shape, then marked out individual panes for removal. Ultimately when you do something like that, and then glue it to the frame; it doesn't line up with the chicken wire frame squares, so then I just take the knife to it and hack any overlapping plastic, this then becomes the broken glass sections. I'll paint random panes still to give this look:
The 1/4" chicken wire is supposed to represent this type of industrial window.
@Weety, thanks! Plenty of weathering still to come. I want some of the graffiti to look older and more faded, and some to look newer/fresher, and to do that, it takes patience and lots of drying time.
You'll notice the shade in the mortar lines is darker in the last pics, from last night's final light coat of Didi's magic brown ink, this is still just the beginning. Weathering brick takes a lot more stages than weathering a tank or airplane does to make it look right.
@Ramos: you'll see more variations in the brick colors from here on out You should ALWAYS weather light to dark.
Thanks Ghosty! YES!, in fact, I am anxiously awaiting a couple of these kits from ebay:
They are made up of modular panels like this:
Gives you all sorts of possibilities
Well, you need to get O scale 1:48 and then they are perfect. Z, N, and HO scales are too small for anything 40k (Z scale might work for Epic Armageddon, but not my thing, so I dunno)
dsteingass wrote: Well, you need to get O scale 1:48 and then they are perfect. Z, N, and HO scales are too small for anything 40k (Z scale might work for Epic Armageddon, but not my thing, so I dunno)
Glad you all like them I was looking at those modules after you mentioned them before Dave, they have a lot of potential but also allowing a lot of scope for conversion work
nerdfest09 I liked the look of that one a lot as well, hazard stripes seen them somewhere before
The window looks great in the pic. Though I wonder how it looks from a steeper angle. Been sitting here staring at the pic thinking about some way to get the wire closer to the pane. So far I can't think of anything that isn't too fiddly. :\
I like all the tags too. You should go for a bigger "mural" piece on one of the more hidden walls. (or some up around the roof, like they were hanging over the side tagging)
Also, those on-site pics are awesome! Good finds and thanks for sharing to you both. I especially like how decorative the second to last one (in the first post) looks up at the top... at least, I think those are decorations... embellishments at any rate.
My kind of town..Chicago is...
Thanks Max!
Moar windows and washes. Finally almost maybe able to glue it all to the base.
Do you like the window panes better with a little concrete wash airbrushed in the centers?
a thought has crossed my mind... you need trash cans... lots of them... and maybe one with that cool clear resin flame of zinge... that you could upgrade then with a lil led inside for that flame effect... to spice up the base of that cool looking building...
the new kits look very promising.... those widow arches in particular...
and... thank the lords... that this building has enough space on the walls for all your friends names
oh and nery... an =]_= on your skin... now that would be epic...and the rather thin call for membership by dave i can only encourage

Yeah, it really isn't a scan, but it's a pic of the paper.-It should be a few pages back (I can't get to my photobucket from work) I just searched google Images for graffiti, found various lettering styles that I liked, and then started doodling with a pencil. Once I was happy with the sketch, I just outlined and filled in with a Sharpie. Once you can do it on paper, it's easy to do on a brick wall. Some (like yours Maus), I decided to do differently on the wall.

Thanks LDD! But I'd recommend the Woodland Scenics DPM panels before I'd recommend vacu-formed stuff, much easier to work with. you absolutely NEED a tube of putty, not greenstuff, not Liquid Green Stuff, but Putty, plain, old modeling putty to work with Vacu-formed kits. Not for the faint of heart.

Thank you! You won't find many building kits under 1:48, this kit is actually 1:35 scale, figures in 1:35 are more Inquisitor size (54mm). I changed the scale of this kit only because the bricks matched The O scale brick sheets I had, and I had to be careful to remove or omit any kit parts that could possibly be "scalebusters", replacing them with recognizable bits or scratchbuilding others (such as the windows). Search under model railroading stuff in O scale too. You'll find lots.

I spent a lot of time looking at buildings IRL, the Urban Explorer sites are always full of inspiration like this. You don't need a lot of imagination, just a reference photo or two and the right materials.
Aye, I can easily do the tags my own way (as opposed to Dave, I did do a lot of wall cleaning in my youth due to tagging those walls first and being caught) but I thyink its cooler to keep the style the same, so as to make sure that whoever finds my stuff on the net, or daves, twenty years from now, will know ah... that was the league...
I have the pics saved already aye, and will work from there, but you know, having them in front of me on paper would have helped. I'll go about the difficult way now...
That'd be way cool... by that time i will have all my shanties up and painted for sure... 5 are done already, but i'm slacking in the picture department right now...
As a matter of fact, i'll get to that right now...
Here's a fun idea - pick a small scale model of a famous building (crysler, empirestate etc) and make it post apocalyptic. Rust, ruination - plant life. We could have a competition. I actually have no idea if anywhere makes scale models of skyscrapers but probably!!
P.S. I'm drunk.

actually it is the mortar ... somehow i would have loved to see more definition on this... i likie as siad earlier the sooty look of the bricks... but the aestheticsof brickwork is for me in the contrast between mortar and brick color... here in the berlin surrounding area...called brandenburg you see a lot of the yellow/sandy brickwork... so i am fine with the yellow bricks... just more mortarlines^^ and i´d be a happy nerd
At that scale, perhaps you are right
I guess I was trying to think big
Or farther away?
Automatically Appended Next Post: I'm not sure how I would do that after coloring the brick. I'd be afraid that a light grey wash would also grey my bricks. Hmmmm, I'll figure it out.

first two buildings look good... third not so... of course crappy CGI...
with trying to think big or far away you are referring to the optical illusion, right? well indeed the models are much more detailed i think than an actual view could see in detail if he would look at stuff from a scale relative point of view... but well we always opt for the rule of cool...

Why are the bottom bricks red? It makes it look like the top bricks were painted. Lol
Nope. Around here (Columbus, Georgia) there is nothing but red brick. Maybe some purple or different shades of red, and sometimes almost white when they get that white clay (but that's like one brick out of a thousand in the home.)
We actually have some brick makers aroudn here so all of ours are local. And very red. Nothing but good Georgia clay used around these parts.

with trying to think big or far away you are referring to the optical illusion, right? well indeed the models are much more detailed i think than an actual view could see in detail if he would look at stuff from a scale relative point of view... but well we always opt for the rule of cool...
by the way... MY favorite brick color is still red.... with possibly white/grey mortar lines... that really makes me jiggy^^... also that gives you the excuse to add mossy green patches...

??? never heard of that... and translation only brought the same term...:(
a grey wash would have ruined everything... when you started that building i thought you chosen the yellow color for the mortar... and then sponge or drybrush over the brick color... since you work on such big surfaces with AB of course this is not the right procedure... don´t get me wrong... i really love that building... it stands for all the down to earth people living in good and honest homes... i just detest those cheap built buildings out of concrete plates...like:
horribly to live in... and way too many houses built like that here...
HEY I make correctly scaled wall plates like that... also made of a kind of concrete.... Lol
well... i ment i love brickwork... your stuff is very fluffy ... one needs to discern taste and cool work ...

No need to prove me wrong, dave. I fully believe there arre yellow brick buildings out there. Also, who's to say you're underhive building isn't a red brick building with some kind of underhive mud stucco covering over it.
Childe..Because you are a special case, I'll make a special tag for you on the next building, k bud?
Thanks LDD! Those background building fronts are intriguing....
Not-U- that's basically all the League does too, except we add the facade of a mysterious secret society and people's imaginations take care of the rest
Heh Val and Vik, There will be red brick in this Underhive district yet, I promise
Just for some examples of what I see almost everyday here in good old Columbus, GA:
And this is a brick kiln from our historic district in Heritage Park (which is a small plot about 500 x 500 feet or so and is supposed to pay tribute to our cotton mills, steel mills and brick industries.) This is just to show how big brick-making was here at one time. All our mills were made from the same brick too. I need to go tomorrow and take some pics of these places.
While looking for this, I ran into a great site that had some crumbling buildings from rural Georgia, and thought you might like to add these to your collection.
Then there was this gem, which is apparently an historic building and just a delightful color.
Automatically Appended Next Post: And not all of those are crumbling buildings. At least one of them is a building currently in use, but is jsut of the kind of brick I wanted to show. Also, the green brick, and white brick building next to it were painted. A lot of older buildings around here used to be. When they all were the same color, people painted them to make them stand out. So now a lot of them are crumbling, with peeling paint coming off in large swatches.
It's a really nice building, my favourite parts by far are the window panes, they look really excellent. The broken glass technique is something I have thought of doing, but the opaque/dirty panes is not something I had thought of and really adds a lot of character. The pipe work is also really great.
I think the building looks like it was painted yellow as opposed to being made out of yellow brick. I don't think bricks exists in a vibrant yellow like that (except in the Wizard of Oz) but the grimy, dirty paint look is really good and suitable for the underhive.
I am really not keen on buildings in the underhive being made from red brick as it ties very strongly to a specific era and style of architecture, especially with those window and door frames so I am glad you didn't do that.
My only criticism is that this looks like more of a show piece than a gaming piece, I know you don't play much so it doesn't matter maybe, but really you want as many walkways (or places walkways can connect to), collapsed walls etc as possible. This building is really just a giant LOS blocker.
PS. I used that same door recent and someone in my gallery commented that the models looked out of scale next to it. I think it's partially scale creep, Necro models are now so tiny, that door is over twice their height!
Thanks guys! It is a show piece...I needed to build the kit for an IPMS-USA review, so I made something out of it. There will be more walkways than you can shake your stub pistol at LDD's requested scale shots
These aren't CoD panels that is for sure. ALL PARTS need beveled, sanded, lined-up, sanded again, glued off, cussed at, then sanded again ..But this is gonna be cool!
Automatically Appended Next Post: I live in Limestone rich Indiana, Yellow bricks exist my friend My Underhive is going to be unique. I've already done all the classics, and now I'm doing brick. I'm sorry if you don't like it. There will be dirty bricks of every color. A recent dome collapse uncovered this older hab dome with these brick buildings in it, preserved for Millennia.
Thanks for the scale shot Dave not bad match really
As for guidelines of what is right and wrong, it is 40k anything is possible as everything is born from the ridiculous the first place .
Like the early detailing as well, although if it was me I would be tempted to remove the window frames, they look a bit wrong and after what I just said sounds hypocritical
Is it.....is it, a Nerdfest flown from down under to live with you like a kind of sexy butler who attends to your hobbying needs and then does the washing up wearing a superhero costume? and hums 80's t.v sitcoms to you while you go to sleep at night?.......
I hope you're not thinking I don't like it, Dave. I love it. It looks great. I was just juxtaposing your yellow brick to what I normally see around here. I believed you wholeheartedly that yellow brick existed.
Now... if this underhive were to need some kind road... perhaps made out of brick...
dsteingass wrote: Thanks guys! It is a show piece...I needed to build the kit for an IPMS-USA review, so I made something out of it. There will be more walkways than you can shake your stub pistol at LDD's requested scale shots
What a great find. I hate the fully realized stuff that GW has been coming out with. Scratch building is great but can be very time consuming (and difficult). It is great to have a nice base from which to start, and GW doesn't fulfill this roll at all. These panels look awesome, in the hands of a great scratch builder these are gold. Can't wait to see what you do.
You get 2-4 panels per $9 package, plus you get styrene strip and sheet material, and pillasters; depending on which of the 9 panels in the system you get.

Thanks! It'll be suitably decked with appropriate plating A Civilian Cargo Eight has been on my mind for some time now

Understood, but the building to the right is raised for the dock, the building is split level, and that is just how those types of windows were made, before air conditioning was prevalent, windows were designed to be as large as possible. Look at the reference pics or any old 19th Century building like that, they get boarded or bricked up. Fear not, most of my ground-level windows will be bricked up to give that look

To look badass, to be preserved on the Internet for posterity, To hopefully inspire others to do the same the way Ironhands inspired me

Nope, only castles need that, and thats an additional set of rules. I wasn't meaning timber houses, a lot of Empire houses are actually like some medieval ones, half brick half timber ones.

An Outhouse, made of brick. It's an American Expression that refers to a "well built woman". Before indoor plumbing was common, people dug a hole and built a shack around it for a bathroom (usually made of wood). During the Great Depression, one of the common New Deal projects put people to work building outhouses made of brick. -This is where the expression came from. Since then, it has come to mean a compliment
I can barely imagine that being a compliment. But I guess you have to think like a 1930's rube. Seeing an outhouse made of brick must have seemed to wondrous thing back then. lol
I thought it was a reference to The Commodores song Brick House... you know.. " She's a brick house she's mighty mighty just lettin' it all hang out!" Did I just show my age??? Plus if you have ever had to dig a "Cat Hole" while in the field while surrounded by 60 of your closest buddies, angry NCO's and Officers you learn to appreciate the comforts of a brick house...
Built like a brick "gak"-house, is slang for an incredibly good looking woman, usually stacked.
pretty sure that would get you slapped in the UK. As Vit says we use it to mean big/muscled/solid-looking which is not a compliment you usually want to pay a woman.
Great work in here. Love the newest building. those DPM kits are really great. I couldn't find the products listed on their website though.
Your scale graffiti is really good !! Do you do scale color posters too like some terrain enthusiast? (like propaganda ones etc.) (obey posters seem to be common in 40k terrain for whatever reason, maybe its just the only stuff I happen to recognize that isn't centered in 40k universe) ( Figured the graffiti would look awfully cool over posters of opposing factions/ideology)
Thank you for telling us how you do it (outline with sharpie then paint to fill in or w/e) I was going to do my ork grafitti all by brush, but it helps knowing I can have a good end result by starting with a sharpie outline.
There is no review Deadline on this one...the answer: when it's done
Naa, I used my new belt/disc sander to make a stack of blank inserts for the windows. It's really cool, I just cut a stack of rectangles of plasticard, hit them on the end, which slightly melted the end plastic together, then formed the curves. I'm experimenting with ideas for stuff to glue onto them. I also need to shave 18 MOAR skulls off of CoD panels and bitz, or do something different on the second storey.
I'm making a huge mess, but little progress.
Automatically Appended Next Post: Hey Skifi! Thanks man! Yeah, it's a great tool, it's glossy at first, but all graffiti should be weathered anyways. I'm always happy to explain anything I can.
Pretty soon, visitors will see a huge sign at Dave's:
"Welcome to Steingass City! Relax! enjoy the local cuisine, and don't mind those bullet tossing gangers! they are a part of the whole tourist attraction of this town!"
God damnit... I really need to get a new computer soon.. I'm missing to damn much of what all of you guys are doing! That house turned out great! Love the smashed windows and the grafiti. Really nice touch. Keep up the great work and i'll sneak by again in a couple of days or something
I have to modify that, the damn door ended up too tall, the whole damn building is too tall, and I screwed up the buttresses. I'll finish it later. I'm just not happy with it. For every good idea, I'm bound to have 16 bad ones
You could always make bars to go over the windows too. Maybe take some of the Chaos spike railings and glue one or two together to get the height and width needed. Obviously cutting off the helmets/skulls/heads impaled and just using the spindals. Just a thought.
I see where you're going with the brick. I could probably take pictures now of old cotton mills with those giant long windows bricked up when they all added AC units in the eighties. I like the brick, but for nostalgia's sake. There are some good suggestions from others here also.
Could have a mix of them? some bricked, like in lower windows, and some could be painted up like plywood/steel plates? Kind of a condemned building thing.
I would say, if you're going for plain, maybe add some planks of wood nailed on either neatly or roughly / coming away. Or you could do both, brick for the ground floor and plain / wood for the upper floor. Edit: ninja'd Or maybe metal sheeting that you often get on soon-to-be construction sites that I can't find any pics of except for an extreme close-up...
If you do brick you need to make it look newer that the surrounding brickwork, or even completely different bricks.
Automatically Appended Next Post: Personally, I like the bricked up look....you could accentuate the look by making the bricks in the window less worn/weathered...

You know what... as soon as I'm done with the IG, I'll get on that! I'm actually thinking of modeling an Arbites squad to count as an infantry squad in my IG army. I could always then use them to play Necromunda, once I find a good group to play with.

So.. a precint house with a detective named fish and a judge with a mustache, and a servitor spraying hazard stripes... I might could swing that. I'll have to learn to build terrain first.
Its made with a bunch of out of print Forgeworld pieces, but the geometry and detail is fairly simplistic, you could make those bunkers and such from foam-core or card, etc.
Damn, knew it would be a bad idea to try and catch up with Dave's thread whilst under the influence - sorry dude, incapable of giving good feedback except for the fact I really enjoyed the graff Hopefully I'll read this once sober and remember to go back and look at that other stuff
Galorn wrote: Hmm I own that book... also the two original "how to" books GW put out in the early 90s.
Yeah, funny how in the 'how to make Terrain' book they have that crashed spaceship...which actually looks really cool until you find out they cut up a Star Wars transport ship that hasn't been sold since like the early 80's...sure, I bet everyone has one of those laying around to hack up and make into scenery
The really sick thing is that miniature sells the idea even more and forces the perspective... it really DOES look like terrain now! Absolute madness / illness detail that only a completely insane person would attempt... which means Dave will likely start this project next week (and have it finished a week later)
I've been on a trip around the East Coast Vik, visiting Ladygeek's family for the holidays. Yesterday was the first time in my life I've ever seen the ocean.
It was amazing, despite the crappy day. Growing up in the midwest, I thought I'd never ever see it. The scale, the size..it was the biggest thing I've ever seen. I have to admit, it took my breath away and was quite emotional for me. The sound was all I could hear, and the smell was probably the freshest thing I've ever smelled too.
Having been fortunate enough to have grown up on the East Coast most of my life (40 mins from the beach) and lived for 3yrs in Hawaii (100yrds from the beach) It non the less always amazes me to look out on the oceans horrizon and feel so dwarfed by its size. I can't imagine seeing it for the first time as an adult. Glad you were able to see it! Were you brave enough to actually get in the water despite the weather?
I live in the South, on the opposite side of Georgia from the ocean, but I love going to the ocean. It's terrifying and wonderful all at the same time to think where all that water has been and imagine what might be in it. Jaws warped me as a child though and I don't like swimming in it.

Right now I live just outside of Raleigh, NC about 3 1/2hrs from the beach. Honestly feel more comfortable in the ocean than I do swimming in lakes or in the rivers here. For me I know that If I get "bumped" in the ocean, it's either a sand or hammerhead shark, but if I get bumped in a freshwater area... Yeah, that just freaks me out!
Very cool Dave, I spent my early childhood in Minnesota, and visited Lake Superior a couple of times...but my dad is English and my first visit to the Ocean was when we made a trip to England when I was 5. My Nan had a cottage near the sea in a little town called Wittering in the South of England not too far from Portsmouth and the Isle of Wight. I didnt understand it was the English Channel back then, but it was impressive to me nonetheless. We moved to the SF Bay area in California when I was 11...and I havent lived more than an hours drive from the ocean ever since....Ok, 29 Palms was more than an hour away, but my other duty stations during my stint in the Marines, Camp Horno at Camp Pendleton, MCRD San Diego, Keesler AFB in Biloxi, Camp Hansen in Okinawa, and even my 2 months at an army base outside Rockhampton, Queensland, Australia were all no more than about an hour from an ocean if not closer. I hate to say it, but I sort of take it for granted now, and hearing your story actually makes me feel guilty that I havent been to the ocean in a bout a year, despite my living 20 minutes from it now...Family trip to the beach this weekend!
Haha, it wasn't very cold in South Jersey, about 54. I got my feet and hands wet, not much else. Now I am in Albany, NY and it's miserably cold here. I'm ready to go home now, but we don't fly back until Weds I'll definately come back when it's nicer weather.
Oh man. Albany is only 3.5 hrs from me. Next time you're coming out we should get a LoER game in w/ you and Brian vs. me and Galorn. We will share the love of Papa Nurgle with your brainwashed Imperial lapdogs.
Yeah, Brian said he and Galorn are about 4 hrs from here too. I went through the Pine Barrens in NJ, and the Catskill Mountains and It's absolutely amazing to me that people settled this terrain with no more than horsepower and the rivers at the time. Like I said, in the Midwest, everything is flat and ALL the urban areas are sprawled. I'd need a sturdier roadcase to trust my miniatures to checked baggage methinks

nah just take a road trip on over to here... the cost might be about the same as flying...
To hear that you had never seen the ocean legitimately astounded me. Now I just feel so lucky to like in a country where the beach is never too far away, wherever you are. The ocean is one of the most beautiful and terrifying things on this planet.
As I live on a thin peninsula next to a castle on an island I find it hard to imagine growing up in the middle of a continent. Well done for going to see it - I might well feel the same if I went to inner Mongolia and stood on a hill.
Don't take this the wrong way Dave, but how can you get to your age in life and only just seen the ocean for the first time... I'm honestly gobbsmacked
My parents and grandparents just weren't travelers- It's a farmer mentality I suppose. We spent time at the Great Lakes, but I've just never had an oppotunity to travel beyond the midwest much. I've only ever been as far west as Iowa
Honestly, I never thought seriously about traveling much. I was raised in the Rust Belt, where the economy was driven by the steel/automotive industry. It's designed to only pay enough to keep a modest home and not much else. But by the time I grew up, all that crap was mostly gone for me, no one could afford to travel much.

That kind of thing always makes me sad about America, and it reminds me of a book too (Generation-X: Douglas Coupland).
Yeah, the American Dream is basically bullshiit, I moved to the city because my Parent's generation didn't leave us much. Nowhere to work, nothing to do unless you want to breed children, and that's not my thing
