These are coming along nicely. I have 4 of them painted but the wizard and big guy have kind of stalled me out on the warband.

I’m the exact opposite, the big guy was so enticing, though I’m not happy with his feathers, so that’ll need changing.

Super simple recipe, I might add a smidge of black for smoke, but they just look really hot without it.

Never tell me to slow down , I might take you up on it and not do anything for months again .

Says the man who cranks out DC heroes and Hogwarts minions left and right, glad I can return some the inspiration I’ve borrowed from you

Well this months painting challenge is metal and wheels. So I’m entering in Thundrik’s Profiteers from Warhammer Underworlds.

Had to pick him up yesterday alongside with the Godsworn Hunt.

Which joined the delivery I received of Dreadfane yesterday morning.

So all that’s left is Mollog’s Mob, which I have enough store credit to pick him up later today. That means I’m all caught up purchasing Warhammer Underworlds just in time for season three to be released in a month or so.

On to painting and assembling.

Still no word on the new job, they are very interested, but we have had stated inspections and other interruptions which have kept us from sitting down and talking turkey.

Mollog has joined the family, so now season 1+2 are collected, plenty to paint before season three arrives in stores.

Tiny bit of progress on my monthly painting challenge entry

Have to take son to the orthodontist this morning, might get some painting time before work tonight .

Bad night of restless sleep leads to some painting. Not done, but getting there.

You know that feeling when you feel really great about a model or a piece you’ve painted or made and THEN you go to post it on Dakka only to see someone else has done the same thing only 100x better nd it’s on the main gallery page .

No point in comparing yourself to others Theo, you can only compare it to what you have done yourself. Personally I think your painting has taken a step or two up in quality over the past calendar year and your steampunk dwarf (I forget their name) is looking great.

Thanks LTMW , I have been trying to do a better quality job lately, quantity has definitely suffered from it though.

Thanks Josh, it’s all leadbelcher to this point, washed heavily with Nuln oil and the gold/copper is again washed with sepia.

So did more work on mr. Floater. Added other metallics, gold and stormhost silver specifically.

Thanks Youwashock , definitely what I’m going for with these guys.

Finished up some more of them.

Not sure of names, skills or use for these guys. At least these seam to be the more ornate of the five, so the last two should go really quick.

On another note, I was helping out a coworker on Thursday night, over did it and thought I tweaked my back, by the time I got home my foot was killing me. Only worked an hour Friday before I had to call it quits as my foot was hurting too much to walk on. Went to workers comp Doctor this morning because it kept getting worse all weekend even though it was a lazy weekend. Turns out I reinsured my back from a few years ago and the pop from my foot on Thursday was a stress fracture in my foot. Didn’t work tonight, will see workers comp supervisor tomorrow to see what she wants me to do as walking is not a good option , and sitting hurts my back after about 20-30 minutes.

Also haven’t had a chance to sit down with prospective employer, but he said the regional manager is very interested in me, so good news there.

Thanks Gomez , I try and limit the pallets of each warband to keep them unified. When these guys were released for AOS I thought they were dumb. They have kind of grown on me though, and I could see a whole army being pretty fun to work on.

Well just went to follow up appointment and I have a fractured toe officially now. Actually it was official on Monday, nut the nurse practitioner was already done typing up my paperwork and sending me out the door to read the radiologists report. I got a nice boot to wear, thank god it’s not my driving foot . The muscle relaxer they gave me for my back is doing the trick until I walk around too much. Limited to 3 hours per day now. Physical therapy begins tomorrow morning for my back and a foot specialist visit tomorrow before work.

youwashock wrote:Noooo! Another hobbyist brought low by the demon of injury. Sorry to hear that, man. Hoping for a speedy recovery. The latest guys look very good.

We gamers are just not built for strenuous work. One of the questions I was asked was if I engaged in any sports activities or hobbies. I said no sports, but I paint and do wargaming. The lady asked if that was paintball or laser tag , I had to break it to her that I move little plastic men around a table and make shooting noises......

squall018 wrote:I hurt my back in Feb. and couldnt sit to paint for about 2 months. It still bothers me after playing for a few hours with all the bending etc. but I can paint pain free at this point. Good luck with your injury. I can certainly relate.

That blows. The worst part of the injury is my paint station is not easily accessible with my back and foot hurting, so if I’m going to go do any work it’s a trek down two flights of steps. It makes me double thinkif it’s worth it each time.

Well now I have one giant boot which makes me lopsided, but I’m big and hairy enough to pass for a Sasquatch anyway, so roll with the punches. My wife will get some sweet revenge as she wore a boot while we were engaged and I called her big foot . Either way now I feel like these Khardon overlords with their big boots and stiff poses.

With my inner dwarf in full swing I finished off the unit. I’ll probably be adding a few plants to the bases, most likely some of my BtGoA plastic plants.

I also picked up darkoath skin contrast paint to try that out on my Godsworn Hunt warband.

Really like the look of it. The darker skin on spear gal is just doing a second coat over the first one. The dog got the same skin, but will probably be getting an agrax bath then a Nuln wash to pamper him.

Still have to finish the eyes of the nine warband .

First off, just wanted to apologize for the long absence, a fractured foot has really hindered me from doing anything productive over the last two weeks. One would think that I’d be more rested, but due to an incompetent nurse practitioner and standard company practices of trying to limit workers compensation claims, I was sent back to walk on my foot and do more damage. I finally got a hard boot to protect my leg and just received an amazon order so that I’m walking straight instead of my left foot being two inches taller than my right one . Anyway, MRI tomorrow and hopefully the orthopedic specialist has good news for me by the end of the week.

inmygravenimage wrote:Hairy sasquatch done good: thumbsup: nice ore hoppy.

youwashock wrote:Injury barely even broke your stride. So to speak. Dwarves look great all together and the next band is shaping up nicely already.
stride broken well, but the dwarves were fun to paint up, and tried a few tricks to really make a difference in what I’ve done previously.

JoshInJapan wrote:Dang, back injuries are the worst. Make sure you keep up with your PT (as if you didn't already know this...)

PT on back is going well, now I’ve got my EVENUP (cool shoe add-on for when your in a boot), so I won’t hurt my back from all the limping I was doing.

Da Boss wrote:Get well soon, Theo!

I tried to echo the old movie the Rocketteer, as they seem to be that sort of steam punk/pulp era sort of character.

Well, wish I could have put up more, but two flights of steps is really just too much, hence the break in progress lately.

Yeah, listening to the PT is really helpful, just wish they would have been working on the foot already, but by the prognosis I’ve heard so far it might be a couple weeks till they even touch my foot.

Camkierhi wrote:Sending hugs bud, take care of yourself.

JoeRugby wrote:Dwarfs are looking great Theo

Thanks Joe, good to see you back and productive again as well.

Well as I said, I’ve been down a lot. They still have me walking on this foot at work about three hours a night, which is now hurting more than when the injury occurred. The remaining five hours isn’t sitting in the main lobby of the hospital telling people where to go . Boring as all get out especially late in the evening and on weekends.

Stairs are a huge ordeal so multiple days of not going to the basement to paint at all, almost a week now, until this morning when I couldn’t sleep after the cats woke me up letting me tpknow they were hungry. So with them fed and a strong desire to throw paint I got in a few hours this morning with the trees whispering my name it was time to work on some Sylvaneth Shadespire figs.

I was wanting to do more autumn colors, but the flowers on the branches just screamed Dogwood (our state tree here in Missouri), which is more of a spring type bloom.

I was thinking of doing all their hair in this orange color, but some of the yellow is just looking great, so the warband May be mixed. He is the furthest along painted though.

The skin is the contrast darkoath flesh, which I think looks fantastic, though most people paint the elf inside the trees as glowing spirits, I wanted to go different, almost like wooden prosthetics or wooden cybernetics for the injured elves.
The Hunt got a bit more work done on them as well, though I don’t really like the way they are coming out, so they will probably go on the back burner for a while.

Well the wife went to breakfast with her mom, so I’m headed back to bed , i need to catch up to a bunch of blogs as even doing that has fallen to the side of the road.

Thanks Syro , yeah, and working at a hospital you’d think with one of our core values being COMPASSION, that would be taken into account .

Thanks Aku-Chan, they are giving me just enough wood .

Meer_Cat wrote:From the look of the castings- dogwoods, mos' def. The way you're working the browns and contrasting with the bright hair- fantastic!

Thanks Meer_Cat, I think they are a nice combination as well.

Okay so question for everyone. I was not intending on keeping the blonde hair, but it looked really good and seemed that everyone enjoyed it, so I redid the orange hair back to blonde as well. The original intent was either all orange hair, or change all hair to green because I wanted the yellow for weapons. I was thinking what sort of energy weapons would trees have, light/solar/photosynthesis power of course . So after about an hour of painting here is what I have currently.

My big question is what should I make the rest of the weapons color wise?
I could do black....a bit boring and not very natural.
I could do dark brown....more natural, but would it blend in to much?
I could go for more of a light wood color, similar to axe guys crotch guard.
I could do a metallic (natural though not vegetable based) like silver or gold.
I could try and do a green to help bring more leafy color in.

What do you all think? Also with hair and weapons both yellow is that too much?

Only the hair and weapons are contrast paint. White undercoat ilyaden(spelling?) yellow contrast over it for the hair, weapons and spirit stones, also the ward swirl on the ones knee and base(hard to see). I did drybrush the edges of the weapons with praxetti white and do a layer of the yellow wash afterwards to blend the edges.

The body is all Rakarth flesh with washes of agrax and nuln oil. The woven tabard thing has a wash of sepia then highlighted again with rakarth.

I think the weapons I’ll try on a few scraps first to get a deep red like Graven was mentioning. Though I’m also going to try a dark green on some stuff too just in case .

 youwashock wrote:

I’m really feeling the lack of green too. Even with green on the bases I think I need to add more green out there and the only parts I can think of are the weapon hafts and handles. I think I found a place for the reds though.

Each of the guardians has a little bug friend, and I think they deserve some color, so I hit them each with the blood angels red contrast paint. If I can find my druchii violet I think that will darken them even more and bring them to what I think we were looking for. The next question is do I make the green vibrant or dark. I was testing some colors and got this green from the yellow contrast then a wash of biel-tan green.

Though I’m feeling black more and more.

Too late , I got too quick with the brush right after I posted. Hopefully it looks okay.

youwashock wrote:I forgot about how the bugfriends would fit in. Red works, but you could use them to add splashes of several colors and break up the woodsiness a bit.

Break up the woodsiness , it’s a woodsy army.... I get what your saying and my new direction might mean doing that as I think too much red all over will be an eyesore.

So talking about an eyesore.....
All the yellow was too much for me. I still want the blades and weapons to be yellow as it’s the power of the sun being used as a weapon, so against others ideas the hair is going green again. The green is more subdued than the previous green and it matches the bases, so hopefully that will help army cohesion. Also still futzing around with the weapons, but here is the test subject.

These guys have me thinking of Branching (pun intended) off intonations a full AOS army. I must be Barking mad.

I like the change to green- and the yellow is a good base color for the weapon; the Folk would be very blended with their environment, one would expect, but forged weapons, they should stand out, and they do.

If you branch out, I'll root for you! Just don't go about it half-ash-ed; do it right else we'll beech you with a stick.

I'm in Columbia, actually. And I definitely like the latest tree person better than the others. The more subdued colors seem more fitting somehow (not that the others looked bad at all though).

Yep, good old woodsy camo.

So I got the starter box today, spruce sprue pictures.

Started to assemble the lord, but sleep is needed now.

I also picked up another new paint. It’s Barak near Burgundy, and I think it will be the weapon haft and handle colors. I also think the bugs might get the burgundy (or bugundy color too as the pop of color is too much and draws away from the model. I’ll test it out later to see.

So today is day 1 of the dakkadakka September painting competition (round55) titled Up, Up and away. So having no flying units for Sylvaneth which I just bought , I might as well make my own.

Copied my post straight from the competition page here.
The short story:

The Khardon Overlords and Sylvaneth became embittered over who could use a track of land after fighting off a chaos incursion. The Khardon Overlords paid little heed to the ground dwelling treemen seeing as they possessed air superiority though the Sylvaneth clearly had numbers. Figuring on a quick end to the battle the Khardon Overlords brought their fleet in close....too close it seems. Taking a play from a game in the world that was the Treelord Ancients began throwing their team-mates at the Khardon vessels. The Khardon who had not bothered to prepare fully were taken off guard by the SAP (Surface to Air Plantlife) and were quickly undone. At the truce talks overseen a delegation of Stormcast Eternals, the great growth ancient Cypress was heard to say about the battle

“Who needs air superiority when your limbs reach the sky?”

Picked up a start collecting Sylvaneth box this week after having so much fun building and painting the Warhammer Underworlds Ylthari’s Guardians warband. I always wanted to build a tree man heavy WHF army, never got around to it till now .

Sprues or spruces, guess autocorrects going to get a workout with this . Had to modify the left arm some and trimmed a few branches that were in the way.

This ”Gumball Special” is so inspired by my favorite comic book team the Uncanny X-men with Wolverine and Colossus working together for their Fastball Special.

The first SAP will get a name eventually, and is not glued into place so I can do a flight picture when all painted up.

Neither can I , started work on him today.

He got primed white, layer of Rakarth flesh and a coat of agrax. Sword is still wet with the contrast Iyaden yellow.

Between layers I redid the bugs, the red was just too powerful, so they have been based with Barak Nar Burgundy.

Weapon shafts also got the same color.

Working the holiday tomorrow, so probably not too much progress to be seen.

I have always wanted one of the modern(ish) Treemen, but have never pulled the trigger on buying one. He is already looking good considering that he only has a few colours on him. I am a big fan of that new burgundy, great stuff.

Love the palette. The green hair, yellow blades, the autumnal familiar-y thing, it all pops. Cracking.

If you ever get more tempted by them make sure to just buy the Getting Started box. It has all the options for all three treeman variants and just a little more than buying him separately. Also tons of left overs once he is assembled.

Thanks, I prize your color judgement, and was concerned that I had messed things up royal.

Anyway. did a little work this morning. I got to say I'm in love with the way the sword is coming along.

I also touched up the horns on the warrior.

Too long since I've stopped and commented here.. Looks like you kept busy painting Underworlds. Yltahri's Guardians are looking great, and it's cool seeing you change the colors. If you have doubts about how something looks, just change it! The current iterations are the best, I think: a lot of natural colors and a complementing, eye catching spot color on the weapons.

From what I read about the army it is very terrain dependent. You need lots of trees (Wyldwoods to be precise). I do like the bugs better in the burgundy too.

Thank you . I’ve always questioned my color choices, especially since my wife comments about my wardrobe selection frequently . The yellow turned out so nice that I really wanted to pull it back more to make it even more special instead of having it everywhere. Hope that makes sense.

Well more progress.

Even though this is a huge model he is coming along quickly, and I think he’s coming along well even with the speed. I’m thinking of making some glowing (yellow) runes on him, I just don’t want to overdo it. Also looking at basing him already. I figured the army will have stirland mud applied to the bases and then painted like the Ylthari’s Guardians bases in the same green that matches this guys ivy loincloth. The guardian bases have some rounded stones on them which have been painted with the basilica grey contrast paints. I have some small aquarium stones that I can use.

Sorry for the silence, not much hobby happening, though Drycha Hamadrya was purchased today along with some basing stuff.

I’ll get responses up and pics over the weekend (probably Sunday) as we are going to see the Blue Angels tomorrow and have a date night with friends afterwards. Then I have to clean up from the church carnival late Saturday night/Sunday.

I really dislike the spirit that is coming out of Drycha Hamadrya. Not sure if she’s close enough in size to the treelord where I can use a spare head, but I’m going to try.

Oh the flying part is covered by a dryad that is being hurled by the treelord like colossus would chuck wolverine

Maniac_nmt wrote:The GW version of Treebeard is shaping up nicely. I can't say I'm a fan of much of the modern GW styling, but that is painting up well.

The army has two very distinct factions. Evil tree sprites and Bob Ross happy tree sprites. I’m more the Bob Ross type.

Da Boss wrote:That Treant looks way better than the GW scheme in my opinion, it actually looks like a tree come to life. The GW one is very strange looking in comparison. Good stuff!

Yeah, but they are trying to turn everything up to 12 in the fantasy world, that includes the color wheel.

GrimDork wrote:Giant tree dude looks cool. Will have to catch up on this one.

Well this project is new, so not much to catch up on, but glad to see you back.

Pictures in the morning.....or Sunday.

Edit: not sleeping well, so that means God wants me to paint/do hobby stuff RIGHT???

Current state of affairs with the treelord.

Also, supply drop from yesterday.

It’s been a long time since I’ve bought basing stuff and I’ve never used army painter products for basing, so I’ll go watch some videos as I assemble the Son of a birch.

Assembled and size comparison as I couldn’t find and side by sides out there.

And instead of the ugly spirit I used one of the spare heads from the treelord kit, which I think turned out great and instead of the weird tale with honeycomb I added the spare loincloth from the treelord kit to cover his badonkadonk trunk.

Feels like lots of movement from this kit. I haven’t added the squirmlings or bug swarms. I think I’ll leave them off so I can just run him as a mini treelord or as Drycha Hamadreth. Going to prime him up now so I can paint him when I have some time.

Yeah, the fact that it’s WYSIWYG is dumb. Especially since the bugs are too tiny to magnetize.

I don’t mind the bugs (Spites), just distracting to say the least.

I’ll probably never play, but it I should the line I would go with, followed by probably stormcasts (though I’ll be repainting the ones I’ve already done of those ).

Yeah I think the yellow cake before the trees, at least in my mind of painting anyway.

I think the heads all fit well, and give the option of putting some flock on for more beard/hair is calling me.

Well quick update, will do some more painting soonish, but now my mind is almost set on finding some large bug wings this guy just scream so giant hug with wood armor to me and I think there’s are just the right contact points to give him Bee wings which wouldn’t make him a flyer, but just look cool. I’ve thought about the wings from the Nurgle plague fly, might have to ebay shop for a set.

Edit: more painting and basing done.

Mr. Honeybee is getting there as well.

Little fronds . Dryad assembly sucks . The little fronds have small contact to the ground and superglue takes too long to grab it. I may have to go get some good old plastic glue.

aku-chan wrote:Surprised by your converted Drycha.

I just didn’t like the look of the evil spirit coming out of the tree. I’m more of a sunshiny energy in the tree and the face and hair just weren’t going to change with bright colors. But thanks

Dr H wrote:Good work, Theo'. Tree-mendous.

Oh you .

So as I mentioned, gluing the dryads to the bases is sucking. Almost makes me wish they had good old fashioned tabs on them.

Group shot.

And the wind up. I definitely need a better photo booth set up.....or a photo booth set up to begin with.

You can see Gumball getting ready to be thrown into the enemy ranks.

So in my travels today I stopped by Miniaturemarket......no good ever comes from me stopping by Miniaturemarket . Did I get more tree peoples? Or more paint for tree peoples? Or more basing stuff for tree peoples?

NO.

I got a banged up box of Gotha Knights forWrath of Kings . It’s okay though as one day I want to field a werewolf army too . 8 big old werewolves wearing armor for $10......done. Besides I have stupid dryads to glue together and paint up so I need a distraction .

Good luck with the FLGS, I live in St. Louis and at one point I had 6 FLGS within 15 minutes of me, a few have gone under since, but the main ones I’d frequent are still strong.
I didn’t get into the Kickstarter or the game, but the not wolfed are great for making a werewolf army for kings of war.

Cheap things are always good for practice if nothing else. I miss the old Miniaturemarket when it was 2 miles from my house. No one went there so I got some great deals that I haven’t seen at the new place. Oh the puns....keep them coming, just stay off the grass.

They are HUGE, even bigger that the rest of the wolfed guys I have. I played around with an idea for fur, so I’ll probably try it out on them. It’ll be more of a white/winter sort of scheme.

Well I sucked it up and finished the dryads.

Probably could have used wood putty to get them together. At least this thorn in my side is done.

Thanks RIDS, I was hoping the yellow would help people see the trees even in the forest.

They sure had me pining for the the good old days .

Well dryads are primed now waiting for basecoat, but that will wait till tonight as I’m leaving for work shortly.

In the mean time I started trying out the contrasts on the Wolfen.

Two guys painted with a coat of Basicillica grey and one with apothecary white. One of the two grey will get a test layer of apothecary white on top to see if that will tone him down a bit, but he won’t be dry till I get home.

FYI, workers compensation doctor upon hearing I was being sent to a specialist and wouldn’t be back to see them released me to full duty last week. That didn’t turn out so well as I argued I wasn’t ready. They put me back to doing most of what I used too which had me using more pain medicine, which kept me home with bad stomach issues. Saw the specialist yesterday and he was shocked to hear they had me back to full. Restrictions have been put back, new medicine prescribed, and I’m headed in to see what my work has to say about the situation. I know my boss will be “caring” as ever.

I’ve kept one of the apothecary white, it may need more work, but we will keep on him for a different pack or use the technique again for a white alpha.

So AOS army shot so far, my estimate is almost 1000 points.

First half of dryads are done, leader needs her base flocked though.

Second half of dryads are based with Rakarth flesh.

And as stated above I got some skeleton horde contrast paint, so I’m testing it over Rakarth flesh to see what that looks like. It’s still wet in this photo, likely put up a shot later tonight when it’s dry.

FLGS got a pallet load of stock in from GW yesterday. They said it would have ALL the contrast paints on it, may have to stop by today and see what is needed.

Talk about seeing the forest for the trees. Awesome progress. They look great all together. The SkelHord over Rakarth looks like it will make a good light-wood.

That’s what I was thinking as well. Now the question is to use this on the next phase of the army, or keep them all the same and not....Branch off .

Slinky wrote:The group shot looks amazing, top work!

Thanks Slinky, I’m pretty proud of my little saplings.

So quick stop by the house between work at church and work at the hospital. Man I cannot wait till I’m off light duty and back to a decent schedule. My wife and kids have enjoyed me being home more in the evenings, but it makes getting any solid project work inpossible.

Dry skeleton horde over Rakarth flesh.

Yep, I think that’ll do it. Now to start planning phase II of the Forest growth.

I’m glad the experiments help out , more to come as I just picked up Militarum Green and Aetheric Blue(spelling may be off from GWs version).

FLGS got their restock, hard to not go crazy with the contrast paints, but only grabbed two and more Reikland fleshshade as I’ve been out for a while.

The militarum green I’ve seen used for Ork flesh to a nice level so I grabbed it up. The Aertheric blue I want to try a few things with, including warpaint/tattoos on the wolves.

Mine are very basic. Rakarth flesh everywhere, agrax wash, darker tones are a coat of Darkoath flesh contrast on top of the others. Couple shots below .

Onto some more contrast experiments now. I know I’ll buy another start collecting Sylvaneth in the near future. I may never play, but having a shelf of these guys will give me wood every time I look at them .

It burns the eyes early in the morning though

Well I tried a lava effect, which I’ve always wanted to do and tried the old fashioned way, but far too many layers the old way. New way is simple.

Prime white drybrushed astorath red, yellow contrast, dry, black contrast, grey drybrush, basilica grey contrast. You could skip the basilica grey contrast, but it gives a “wet” look, which for those who seal miniatures might not want or get from the sealer anyway.

Not totally happy with him so far, but making a treeman out of left over bits looks possible given all the extras they put in the treelord kit so you could do three different builds.

Pulled a Graven using purple wash to tone down the gold, but not sure if it’s true enough to the colors.

I am happy with how the skin I saw turning out. It’s not like Catbarf’s coconut crab Tyranids, but it’s what it was reminding me of while making it.

All the models will be on deck plating such as this, the marines are being hunted on their own ship after all.

Almost started it last night, but I’m wiped out. I wanted an alien looking metal and I think the purple and bronze worked well to achieve that.

I do love the look on them together, I’m just dreading doing 16 more of them .

Captain Brown wrote:Very nice Theophony,

The treadplate is I dead some sheet styrene. I think I lucked out and got them on clearance from Hobby Lobby, but they may have just come from the local train shop. I think all the models will get them on the bases.

Well not much done last night, still wiped out from work as getting back into the groove will take some time. I did do the beads in the third predators tendrils, but that was about it.

Also I picked up two more contrast paints. nazdreg yellow (more brownish than orangish like the Other yellow) and Gryph hound orange which looked more like a blood orange color last night, but it was still wet then. Pictures of the test pieces later as I’m headed up to church for a few hours and then taking the old cat to the Vet as he’s not doing well.

Thanks for dropping in everyone .

Edit: new contrast colors. I’m going to give them some drybrushing to see what I can come up with. I really liked the imperial fists i saw with the Nazdreg yellow as the base.

Also started power lifter.

More edits:
My predators are almost all done, just need a few touch ups and possibly some base detail work. Decided to try and get the power lifter painted up as I bought some new contrast paints. Still a long way to go.

Theophony,

While you are totally correct in that you can do what you want with the Sylvaneth tree man...the practical side of me says I should recommend you consider the storage and display of a model with such a large protrusion. It only has to extend a few inches before everyone will get the idea and envision the beam continuing. Just my two cents.

You would go crazy if you saw the “storage and display” my models get. Usually just cardboard boxes with them all jumbled and piled inside. I’m not a great painter, so I have no fear of damaging my paint jobs. As for size, that stick is just for mock up right now, no idea how big of a blast he will actually get.

Yorkright wrote: Everything is looking good Theo. That yellow contrast paint really covers nicely, I may have to try some as I loathe doing anything in that color.

I definitely recommend the yellows, both have proven to work wonders.

Maharg wrote:You're certainly going to have a unique looking Sylvaneth army there Theo, look forward to seeing the latest treeman finished. Good start on the power loader. Is that just one coat of contrast on that yellow?

Yep, one quick coat, and not too heavy at that. I think their one heavy coat comment they made when releasing these was more of a joke with the two thin coats that Duncan usually says.

Well nothing done for a few days. No motivation as fall has started and this is the worst time of the year with seasonal allergies for me. Just wanted to get back to doing some answers from all of you stopping in. I appreciate the feedback .

Thanks everyone, seriously lazy Theo has returned . I only have spent a couple minutes next to my painting area to grab tools for church, otherwise I’ve been completely detached.

Time permitted me a swing by Miniature Market on my way into work today. Snagged a damaged cover copy of the new DCUniverse miniature game and a cheap dreadball figure $11.00 total. I know the rule book may cost me more in the long run with buying models and stuff, but I wanted to give it a good read. I have tons of the old DUST buildings that could look like a proper building front for DC cities, and I haven’t been doing terrain in a while. Maybe it will spark something. I’ll just need to figure out a team and where I want to base my city. I really like the idea of having Doomsday running amuck, just don’t know who would play with him.

Suggestions are welcome as always.

Doomsday is epic. He really is a one man killing machine. You want characters who'll tackle his weaknesses, but you want to watch out for Dr Fate and Ravager especially as they can negate special abilities.
Also, as he doesn't start on the board you need some good early game pieces, especially if your opponent is running Batgirl (she's a pain).

I'll think about a team for you, but my gut says Crime Syndicate. Johnny Quick is very good, gets you a speedster (though Reverse Flash is also good), negating one of your biggest gaps. It's an all in one box solution. Otherwise, something like Reverse Flash, Atrocitus (or Sinestro, but I think Atrocitus more useful for you as he's cheaper) and Black Adam to have a big magical fist. Eradicator maybe, though he's new so won't be about cheap.

What dreadball fig, out of curiosity?

Having ever been a huge DC comics fan the miniature game didn’t really draw my attention, especially with the prices . When Knight Models had released some Marvel miniatures I was super hyped as I am a mutant through and through. Alas it was not meant to be as they lost the rights and all merchandise was pulled before I got my greedy hands on any of my Beloved X-Men . With the word of a Marvel superheroes game coming out I got excited initially, then overjoyed as the Cinema world saw Mutants and Avengers once again being back I never the same universe. The joy was quickly killed by seeing that the price tags were not really much cheaper than the metal/resin Knight Models and gameplay leaks took away the last of my interest and curb stomped them as only Juggernaut could.

Yesterday however I happened by MiniatureMarket’s retail shop and they were doing a “Garage Sale” of old stuff and some dinged and dented merchandise and they had two stacks of the DCU rulebook marked down to $10 each, so I grabbed one as just the artwork and background surely would be worth it. (I place the blame fully on Inmygravenimage as his blog both here and elsewhere on the internet have done a great job promoting the models and game system).

But Theo, I thought you didn’t like DC comics?

......Well, a long time ago I worked in not one, but two different comic and game stores (25-30years ago ). While most of my comic love was Marvel, I did follow Justice League Europe...... yeah, they existed . I didn’t follow Superman or Batman at all as all powerful meant that there wasn’t really a point to see who would win the fights, and mr. moneybags could buy whatever technology he needed to track down the bad guys. So once JLE got the axe I stayed on the right side of the comic shop shelves until......

That’s right, I’m a veteran of the Death of Superman. My best friend and I worked at the shop the day the story hit the news media and hundreds of crazy people came in thinking they could buy a copy off the shelf and resell it to put their kids through college no joke. We had people offering to give us $10-20 to be moved up the wait line to get a copy. People were nuts. My friend even went out and had shirts made saying “I survived the death of Superman” on it. (It was also part of his toast to me at my wedding a few years later ).

Why am I telling you all this?

Easy.....I’m bored . I’m also thinking of starting off with Doomsday as my second DC model as I bought a promo bat-mite a while back.

Doomsday was the bomb. I fondly remember the pages of reading the storyline. You never saw a villain crush a tiny helpless bird in it’s hands before this guy came to town. The fights were one sided, even with all the universes strongest heroes working together they barely slowed him down. Though my favorite part of ANY comic EVER was when Doomsday took the time to drag Blue Beetle over to a car and put the beaten heroes head in the opening of the car door and slam it shut. THAT, right there was pure malice and true evil intent of not just beating his opponent, but also destroying him. Villains never did that because they were too busy twirling their mustaches and telling the hero their plans . That’s why Doomsday gets the two bloody thumbs up from me.

Anyway, I’m still watching gameplay videos and looking over the book, but I thought I’d let everyone know that now is a new jumping on, hopping off or getting beaten down part of the thread. Other projects are going on the back burner (aka being boxed up for eternity). I have been feeling the need to work on some terrain anyway, and this being a terrain heavy game, I think the fates have decided for me.

So, let me know what you guys think.

Where were you when Superman died?

Did you care?

What do you want to see from where I’m at now?

My next step?
Planning out some battle boards. The rulebook has a few scenarios listed and each game isn’t played on a 3’ x 3’ table. Terrain is destroyable in game, you can pick up buildings and throw them at your enemies, so I have to take that into consideration.

Where was I? Reading Marvel and indie books. Never much of a DC fan, either. Their one-off stuff is tops: Killing Joke, Arkham Asylum, DKR, Kingdom Come, but the monthly stuff never pulled me in. Didn't buy Death of Superman. Missed opportunity, as I could have sold it years later for...maybe cover price.

Anyway, Doomsday sounds like a great start, and I look forward to seeing super things here soon. It wouldn't break my heart to see you finish Tony Bark first, though.

Good chat yes, destroyable terrain is key. Plenty of vehicles, plenty of things of various sizes to throw. Also, a variety of heights is good.
And yeah I remember it well. Though it was Knightfall that was the big event for me.

Well, I’ll return to Tony Bark eventually, but this morning I cleared the deck...and went to miniature market , so the deck is full again.

Knightfall got my friends into Batman, but Marvel still had my heart. I didn’t read enough about Azreal to get hooked. I’ll have to see if my Zombicide vehicles are the right size for this game. I found 1:53 scale cars for cheap and they looked pretty good against the Zombicide guys.

Well as stated above, Miniature Market trip this morning. It was almost destiny last night when MM put two gang boxes for their games on sale. JLD and Batman villains, but I stuck with LexCorp. Had Graven of messenger while I was grabbing stuff. If the budget would have allowed there would have been a bigger splurge for sure.

Today was the last day of their Garage Sale so all the junk was 50% off. There wasn’t anything new on the tables so I grabbed a second rulebook for $5 now , some extra D8s as the game runs on those and the LexCorp Army box.

Will begin to assemble them before I head to work. I have to say there is more flash here than in all episodes of CW Arrow crossovers.

Also just FYI the Army box is 46 Power Level in case anyone is wondering.

Pic s hopefully soonish.

Automatically Appended Next Post:

Edit: so got them assembled. Some bad gates which hurt as they are on sharp edges of shoulder joints and half these guys had gates on their crotches which made them look like Lex had hired a bunch of porn movie drop outs .

Can’t really see it from the picture, but there are 4-5 different colors of grey resins used from really light to almost black and Luthor himself has a grey body and black head and arms. Metallo is almost silver in color due to the lightness of the grey and feels more rubbery.

I think the 1:53 SUV behind them fits pretty well as all the models are on textured bases which lift them up 1/2mm. These cars are available from the dollar store for just a couple bucks.

Off to priming.

If you're looking for a different take on colours the LexCorp guys - especially the big guy - work well with the Zod crew, and really look the part of Kryptonian drones.

I’m not sure. One of the reasons I never got into DC was because of Lex’s green and purple wardrobe. I mean I saw he color blind or just so self centered that he wants to be seen? Looking online yesterday it looks like all the newer LexCorp signs from the movies and tv are silver white and orange .

I’ll have to investigate kryptonian drones as the purple and green have me worried.

Yeah, what he said

shasolenzabi wrote:Plenty of powered suits to fight Supes in the name of Lex I see

Yes, and they all get crunched like aluminum cans when sups sees them.

I was a bit worried about the primer yesterday as the weather got cold and rainy right when I sprayed these guys, but they look decent this morning.

Sleep has been in short supply this week, so having gone and worked at church this morning already I’m going to go grab avnap hopefully and may splash some paint if I decide on a color scheme. Freaking purple and green . The second worst decision by DC after not giving Brainiac pants.

Edit: little bit of paint on Metallo. Decided he didn’t need to be green and purple . He’ll have his green heart of Kryptonite, but I remember him from cartoons as being metallic colored. So I started him with basilica grey contrast to bring out the panels. Stormhost silver will be the accent color (shiny good to reflect Superman’s eyebeams).

Also instead of giving him a skull cap like on the box I have given him brown hair that I remembered also from the cartoon.
Not sure what colors to paint the dark areas. I think doing all silver might be over the top, but it is a comic character, so it might become silver man.

Cables will stay basically what they are now. The green on the chest will have at least one more highlight if not two and a yellow wash.
Do you think using Boltgun metal/ whatever it’s called now would be enough of a departure from the silver?

Looks good squire. Ironically the design of the KM Metallo is quite close to the look of Apex (which is what Lex has become in the comics because... Reasons).
More thoughts on colour schemes:
I went with Super Lex, as he appears at the start of the rebirth era

Another possibility is blacks and silvers, especially for the troopers. This would look great alongside General Zod and the gang.
I do really like the white/orange/silver dceu scheme idea though. I think that would be really unique and striking.

I might do Metallo in the Black and Silver, because reasons....and robocop. I might give the silver white and orange a go on Lex and the troopers because I like different and dislike green and purple. Have I mentioned that yet

youwashock wrote:Modern Boltgun will probably work. You can always pull the silver back out after the wash.
I kind of like that idea as it could illustrate the hard metal solid plates compared to the more flexible moving plates of metal.

Still at work so don’t hold me to orange silver and white, but darn that would look good against blue and red

Thanks Yorkright, I’m not totally sold on the grey, but getting there.

So I got home from work and thought I’d try out the test color idea I had on some warpath guys (forget the not space marine faction name). I pulled them out of the box of shame....and then painted Lex anyway.

The whites still need some touch up, especially after magnification.

My thought process was Lex sees himself as noble, the white knight defending earth from the aliens.

Too tired to honk of what else to write. .

Not sure if Honk is a good or bad thing , makes me think of a duck....which I guess floats on water like churches and small rocks .
Thanks, he’s turning out much better than I thought.

Quick army shot again, the rest have gotten the basilica grey coat which I think I’ll use on most models from now on just to help me see where the shading should be. I think it’s another great part of the contrast paints as I never could “see” shading in my art classes in high school and college.

Also not sure about Metallo. Besides his right ankle breaking (I was worried about the resin ), the grey is not striking the right cord with me. He might become a full LexCorp employee soon with some white and orange(which match his eyes already).

Only a few hours of sleep last night, so I’m going to try and grab a nap here before work. Peace out .

Thanks Paradigm, always good to get a few opinions. Mine isn’t sometimes faulty .

So as I said I picked up a few bits.

Purcell antibacterial Hans sanitizer dispensers.

Theo are you drinking the stuff? What would you even consider making out of those?

Why container pods of course. It’s all in my minds eye currently. I’ll have to see how glue works with the plastic, but they have a nice shape to them, mostly rectangular but with chamfered corners. The squirty side has a round port which might make some unique designs into the mix, but I think it’s just large enough for portable labs and such.

It better be filling too , as I just spent grocery money ordering the Justice League Dark set .

MiniatureMarket is having a 25% extra off sale and clearance items. The JLD set was already at around 25% off before the extra sale price. Along with my credit saved up I just couldn’t pass on it. I think they wind up being around 69 points. Between the two sets I should be able to have a few trial games at 35 points. I won’t be able to go pick it up till Wednesday though . At least I’ll have two “armies”. I guess with Zatanna being able to be “evil” she could be on Luthor’s side and I could do approximate 50 point games .

Thanks C.K. (Not Clark Kent )

Little more done on the trooper.

Also MM sale

Got it for around $30 after sale and points.

I’m going to say here and now that i’m Not a fan of the KM resins. It’s really fragile at small points and the JLD set has a lot of fragile parts. I lifted up the Demon model and one of his arms fell of the resin sprue it was attached to. Luckily I could the tiny piece after crawling around under my paint table with the flashlight from my phone searching for it. The models really look the part of their comic book images, but that means long skinny ankleless legs and wispy smoke holding skulls on the magicians. Metallo broke at his foot to floor connection when I bumped him, not sure how he will stand up to playing with him on terrain.

Also swamp thing being the big dog that he is should have been easy to assemble, but was more of a pain than the others since his weight keeps toppling him over.

I will say the details are amazing though.

Swampy is a straight up beast. He stands literally head and shoulders above the heavy lexcorp trooper. Though he was the worst trying to get glued together, even with being beefier than the others.

inmygravenimage wrote:One trick is to exploit the resin strands as decorative elements. Really excited you're a cool DC kid now

I may have to try some of that as thin spots are scary to me.

Dr H wrote:Good job on the grey/silver/orange scheme.

Thanks Dr. H , it’s a combo I haven’t seen used, so I can get away with a lot.

Well work has been a PITA, finally get some new recruits, but it’s hard to train 2-3 new people at the same time in different roles. Wiped out at the end of the day and work at church has just been frustrating with redoing work that “professionals” have done .

Anyway onto the good stuff.
Printed out the rules for Pulp-City, I came up with a few ideas and looking at bones models I may have some options. May have to develope some heroes as the FLGS won’t touch Knight Models at all. I can’t even special order through them. Still put off by the whole Marvel/Knight Model cluster. If I want spandex and superheroes it’ll have to come from some other source in their store . It’s about the last straw with them as they push what they want and are more concerned about their friends than me as a customer.

After watching a Video from Luke about Wish.com I too know a couple chances. Got 2 pair of apple AirPods for under $7 total with shipping. Two of my kids are excited, the third just got a new phone with new earbuds so doesn’t get to complain . I should also be receiving a bucket load of magnets in the next few days as well as a new pair of earbuds for myself for $0.75. Still waiting on confirmation on a 1:53 scale Excavator that I may or may not get (it’s one of their limited time/qty items). It would be a really nice tabletop terrain piece. Take a look at Wish.com, just be careful what you click on , you cannot clear your search function at all and if you click on something that you don’t know what it is you’ll be getting shown hundreds of items similar to it FOREVER. Pictures and descriptions aren’t always the best, kind of like my gallery here .

Quick crosspost, my submission for the DakkaDakka monthly painting competition.
Well since we got an extra day extension I got a chance to post final pics.

My submission was the three Predators from the AVP 1st edition board game. Since I got a little extra time I got the power lifter started. It still needs some detail work, but isn’t part of my submission. Added it to one photo for scale and overall coolness.

Another fun month. Thanks everyone .

I think it’s the Time of year and weather change. 80s to 40s is rough, I’ll be good soon . Thanks.

Yorkright wrote: Predators and Ripley turned out great Theo. I am sold on that contrast yellow going to pick some up.

Thanks, it’s actually generic trooper 547835429-b in the suit. The yellow is great, both of the pots.

So DCU was running my brain last night with the time change. That and old cat waking us up for 3am feeding , worse than a baby I tell you.
Drew out some ideas, then started thinking cost wise . Started laying out the Tablescapes tiles I have and then putting some scatter stuff about. Then cats happened .

Gabe the evil growing feline from the dark dimension had to traipse through the city after his ship crashed. The power of our yellow sun has grown him to the size of a five story building in just minutes. We are doomed.

Gabe peeks into a condemned building as all earth cats do when they come across a box. Even if they don’t fit they have to try.

The tablescape tiles I have will work well I think. Gives me an exact 3’x3’ board. Road down the center can be filled with plenty of debris and crashed ship actually fits the damaged section of tile almost perfectly.

The two shipping containers are huge(contained old marvel figures that you assemble. (Think I got human torch and night crawler). Fits decently themed wise with the building I created as a supply warehouse with cantilevered shelving and racks. I’ll dress them up like the moving PODS we have here in America.

I know i have a few more scale cars about somewhere for ground level scatter, just need some more vertical terrain. Originally thought of a giant tower crane in one corner with the gib going diagonal across the board. Maybe if I find a good deal. Sadly the deal I had on the 1:50 scale excavator fell through......twice . I might just buy it outright for $20 with shipping, but I’m a cheapskate and haven’t checked the thrift shops or the train shop lately.

Thoughts and ideas welcome as always.

Kitten Kong

Classic , we have five cats and they have each taken their turns jumping on the boards or tables as we play other games. Our newest kitten (who’s getting snipped as I type ) stole the dice we were using for family game night Sunday. Every time someone would roll he would pounce on the table. I would have gotten different dice, but it was custom for the game

So since Paradigm decided to sidetrack me by cleverly sending me to ttcombat.com I figured I’d show you all what I’m up to.

Broke out the old MODcube dice to make temporary(at least until I decide to play the game). I contacted the guys at ttcombat and they gave me the layout of the proprietary dice so I can mark these for use. I really dislike proprietary dice, but in this case it fits as the different models have different skill levels, copper(I’m using red), silver (light blue), gold (yellow) and they have different levels of success per dice with gold being the best and copper being least skilled. The orange die will be my crowd pleaser die and either has cheers, boos or a blank on the side to see if you get the fans reaction which can help you along in the game, or end your turn right away. The stat cards are available online and I’ll use stand in figs for now till I decide if this will be a thing or not.

Speaking of figs I grabbed a couple bones figures that I’ve wanted(had the clay golem in metal somewhere from years ago, still a favorite). I cut the golem off the molded base and put them both on clear 50mm bases, they will be the big guys for the teams.

I changed my pledge for this months painting competition to include these guys, who will be pulling double duty as I also printed out rules for a superheroes miniature game that Inmygravenimage pointed out to me on Facebook. I’m going to call the vagina-mouth guy Gutshot and still looking for a good name for the clay golem. Will be searching the bones models more for other characters I have ideas for.

I got about an hour of painting time in on the two bones guys. Clay is coming along just as I expected. Gut shot has turned into something completely different than I intended . I almost want to get him a top hat so he looks more like the bad guy from Princess and a Frog.
.
Clay is actually more orange in person though the sepia wash has toned that down. I’ll need him to have a cool hero and ring name. He hails from the red sands of Petra.

RUMBLESLAM looks like it really draws from Prowrestling here in the USA, and as I used to be a huge fan it will be fun to introduce my son to that culture and try to get him into “smack talking” while playing it. Need to find other models to go with these guys as the game is more of a team versus team game. Gut shot will count as the troll from the Orc team and Clay will count as the Ogre from the human team. Typical teams have 1 big guy, 1brawler, 1grappler(humans and Orcs), 1smaller brawler (goblins and halflings) and 1smaller grappler. There’s a bunch of teams available, but the models are a bit too expensive for my tastes.
The game is played on a 1’x1’ square with a 1”x1” grid. Big guys take up 4 squares. I have an odd tablescapes grassy field tile that I think I’ll repurpose as a ring.

If anyone has played this let me know what you think .

Whatta you gonna do, brother, when Gut Shot runs wild over YOU?!? Oh, yayeah!

Sorry.

Rumbleslam is one of those games I have made sure to stay away from because I would probably buy too mich and play too little. The new guys look cool. Can't wait to see the ring.

They do have a bunch of interesting models, but I think I’ll focus on using stuff I already have/can sub in from other companies. I have a second idea for the ring, but using the secret weapons tablescape board still seems the better route.

I’ll let it slide as I a man easily corrupted by people and I need to take responsibility for my own bad decisions . TTcombat has been buying failing game systems and bringing them back to life. The bought Relic, Dropzone Commander and Carnevale. Thankfully this is the only one that has partially peeked my interest.

Too true

Just to prove it, I painted up some JLD figures. Or at least put some base coats on a few of the team.

The demon is the furthest along, but I need to change his cape to blue.

I hadn’t realized that Deadman’s D is actually molded onto his body till I hit him with Blood Angels red contrast paint.

Printed all the cards for RUMBLESLAM teams out at church this morning including about a dozen special character homages. Still plenty of characters to print out. I’ve been waiting on a couple packages from Wish to arrive. Also looking forward to possibly getting a package in the next few weeks to help promote this.

Water heater is giving me the middle finger right now, spent an hour on it last night and it seems to have worked itself out now.

Thanks Shaso

So nothing to write home about model wise. Winter funk has taken hold and our old cat (Smokie, grandmas cat who started us collecting them like plastic crack) had been sick for a while and we had him put down on Monday . He was a great cat and will be sorely missed, but it was time and he was in a lot of pain.

I will mention I’ve been bitten by the Wish.com bug. Buying a ton of stupid cheap things that might eventually be used here, like 400 1mm magnets for $1.95 shipped

Hope to do some hobby stuff tomorrow, need sleep now.

Detective Chimp is the world's greatest Detective. He's also a Chimp. Called Bobo. Oh, and current manager of the trans-dimensional bar that exists in-between worlds.
Comic ramblings spoilered:
Spoiler:

The current Justice League Dark comic is really good. The main villain, the Upside-Down Man, is properly scary, although Circe is behind a lot of the shenanigans. And Dr Fate went seriously crazy for a bit.

Man-Bat is also currently part of the JLD and works really well in it. Wonder Woman ostensibly leads it but it's got a big cast of interesting characters. The Swamp Thing stuff is pretty disturbing (in a good way), the Parliament of Flowers is now domniating the Green with Fluronic Man as its avatar.

Oh, and Blue Devil is dead

So yeah, Detective Chimp is awesome, and an even better Detective than Batman (one of only a handful of members of the Detective Club, Bats being its most recent addition).

Wish is bonkers. All these things you never knew you needed! Good luck with that lol.

Models are all looking great bud. Table is looking really promising. And by way of a suggestion, one word....Water tower! (ok 2 words, but you know what I mean) Adds all sorts of possibilities to this type of game.

Sorry to hear about the cat bud, as mentioned, they are members of the family, in our home they are more people than possessions. We do not "own" cats, they deem to live with us. It is hard letting them go, but I envy them, they have the opportunity of release with dignity. It will have been hard for the family though. My thoughts are with you as always bud.

Hey guys, quick update on some models.

Swamp Thing and Lexcorp trooper with energy sword. Not pleased with Lexcorp troopers. Just blah about them Right now. The stump for swamp Thing will get more done to it and then I’ll have to cover the cobblestone base with something as trees don’t generally grow out of the pavement and then get stumped .

Also some looking objectives

Lexcorp canisters and crates from Mantic I believe.

Dulldrums are in full gear here. Nothing bad, just lack of motivation. Unfortunately I read an article from Dollar Shave Club about hobbies. Basically it said what I’ve felt for a long time. It hurts more to hold on to these long time hobbies as the rest of our lives change and we don’t have the time to enjoy them like we used to. They suggest finding new hobbies , and realizing that maybe we are looking through ruby colored glasses at our old hobby memories. I wonder if that’s what’s been the cause of my constant shuffling of priorities with my hobby time. Grabbing new games and trying new things out hoping that one will fill the part of me that not actually playing would fulfill. No sudden changes for me though , I’m going to keep track of my plans and still move ahead with some other stuff for now.

Those other plans include these two bones guys I picked up this week.

They will pull double duty in The RUMBLESLAM game I’m trying out and also in the possible Pulp-City heroes game I want to try out as well. I finally got the pdf to print okay and now have to read it and see what I can do. These two will fill in for my versions of old wrestlers the Big Boss Man and Nick Foley. I’m thinking of calling them the Big Bog Man (Big Boss man) and Fryer Jack (Cactus Jack). Though since the second guy is a wight/zombie dude he might be Zomb-kind (Man-kind). Not sure yet, we’ll let the paint decide.

I know, I know but my tired mind is allowing it to have some form of credence. I’ve had urges to try other crafts over the last few years as well and as my time gets to be tied up too much to game and painting doesn’t always bring relief, it really started to make some sense.

That being said.....these two were a real draw for me to buy. Had a good feeling about them and just started with doing them slightly different than usual. They went by quick as well, 2 hours (actually much less) for two models . I present The Big Bog man and MONK-Kind (just thought of the new name while painting him.

Figure he can be like Rasputin and Man-Kind/Nick Foley wrapped together. Beaten and broken and missing his nose he feels no pain and no remorse as he pummels his opponents.

Oh no worries about buying things , I’ve got more plastic than I ever could paint before I die.

Two more Avatars of the Abyss to go with the one I painted way back who crawled out to welcome them. Thinking of repainting them all in a sort of ice theme.

There’s so much goodness out there. GW keeps pooping out new shiny stuff, but the games aren’t drawing me in with all the costs involved.

Ice work in progress.

Aethermatic Blue contrast on white.

Well, hopefully getting back to blue will diminish the stone look. More layers .

More drybrushing to come, but the blue has returned. I might try a chronic blue dry brush first before white.

Thanks Graven. Hadn’t thought about killer Frost, but the new Batman V3 is still sort of on the radar.....just too expensive right now for me to consider with Christmas around the corner.

Well slow and steady like an iceberg . Lots of family time and other stuff ruining my time lately. Took a few minutes this morning to put the white on the models I had worked on already. I think they need a gloss coat and then maybe another white drybrush before I base and flock them with snow.

I’m glad they look more like water elementals that got frozen than almost anything else. I think the blue gives them more movement even just standing still.

Off to shop (Christmas shopping, not miniature related). Though my wife bought a kitchen appliance yesterday and even before it was out of the box I was thinking if I could use it for modeling . Maybe my desires are stirring for modeling again.

Looking good, definitely look suitably icy. A few dots of white on the brightest spots could really sell the effect, but I wouldn't overdo it as that'd end up more frost than ice, I think.

youwashock wrote:I really like the texture as it is now, but agree that a bit more white could be a good thing. Just at the highest points, maybe?

I think I’m going to hold off until I drop some snow on these guys before I decide if they need more white. I think the white from the snow may just push it far enough.

Paradigm wrote:Looking good, definitely look suitably icy. A few dots of white on the brightest spots could really sell the effect, but I wouldn't overdo it as that'd end up more frost than ice, I think.

As above, I think the snow might do it, the humanoid guys are about Orc size in AOS, so there’s not really large spots to dot.

In other news....Christmas shopping happened , even though I wasn’t going to spend “hobby money” because of Christmas, I stopped by Miniaturemarket. They had in store deals that were really great, but I don’t have that sort of free money right now. What sort of deals? Ork apocalypse boxes 1/2 price. Asoiaf starter boxes for $70 . Lots of other things half price as well, just not at the right time for me.

What I did get.....

Army Painter battlefield snow and Blacksuit Superman ($4), they had two, but I only grabbed one...or so I thought until I opened the baggie and there was a second body in the bag . Future Doomsday base decoration.

Also pictured are 20 paintbrushes I got from Wish.com for $2, about to give them a go.

Man, that ASOIAF starter for $70 is a steal, there are nigh on 100 miniatures in that set. Just a shame that the funds were not available to you, not that you (or any of us) need both more miniatures and another game system.

They couldn't come up with something catchy or flavorful like "Reborn" or "Ressurected" or "Mullet n' Guns." "Black Suiterman", maybe?

I know, $70 for 93 minis, how could I pass them up.....well. I don’t NEED another system. Plus the same money could go for more of what I want to paint up.

Oh it’ll be a while before he gets done, but yeah, names are bad from KM. I’m going to chalk it up to “lost in translation” issues.

Yep, down powered supes doesn’t really compete unless your trying some sort of story mode game.

So couldn’t sleep when I got home and fiddled around with a glue stick. I tried this a while back and turned out okay, wanted to add a few steps to see if I could get some better results. Plus played with the snow from army painter.

Clearish gluestick (mini size) shaved randomly with a hobby knife.
Coated with contrast Aethermatic Blue. Sprinkled with army painter snow effect.
After it dried I added Drakenhof Nightshade wash.
After that dried I dry brushed with Chronus Blue.
Drybrushed with Praxeti white.
Fine lined in some asurman blue lines in the center of flat panels.
Fine lined in some ceramics white in center panels
Edged sharp parts with ceramite white.
I think this is my best work even though the ice isn’t overall more blue than white I like the effect a lot.

Oh and it’s translucent when held up to the light.

Hard to get a picture, and while translucent it really is more opaque when not directly up against a light source.

I have another cluster of these spikes drying right now to try this again.

Edit: like 5 minutes from dried drakenhof nightshade to completed. Base still needs some more touch up, but spear done.

Thanks CB, more wrote it down for myself. I keep forgetting to document stuff and then later try and duplicate it to no success. Hopefully it works for others as well.

Thanks Dad , oh and for Christmas I want the Batman 3rd edition game. I know I haven’t been great, but I can make my own lump of coal now .

Very little sleep last night, want to try this in red... but have to get dinner started before I go painting anything else. Might also give green a shot, need some Kryptonite objectives I think.

I hope it will, but the contrast paint I have is militarum green, I think I need a brighter green to work it out right.

This project is giving me all sorts of ideas. So the green I started is too dark for a nice gemstone I think. I’ll still do it and try for a dark emerald instead of a bright green.

At the same time I started an orange one to possibly do lava type bases. Though now that I’m thinking about it I might go nuts and try a grey, a black and a white version of these .
But the orange is getting some other base treatments to see how they look.

Very promising to me.
Oh and with light behind it.

Me likey .

Purple I would probably just buy a piece of amythyst, cheap enough and slightly more realistic.

Yorkright wrote: Looking good Theo, I really like how translucent they look.

Yep, its nice, just not very visible unless light right behind it.

Viterbi wrote:Great crystal tutorial! May snatch a gluestick from my wife and try it out myself some time.

Now I just need to find bigger diameter sticks. Thanks

Quick one as I’m at doctors office with daughter (sickie)

Got a Kai Wolverine off of WISH.com for $0.75 shipped.
Also picked up ice troll and yellow dry paint from GW this week.

Also found bits to scavenge for future terrain.

3”x7” clear tray with textures out the wazoo. I have a few ideas and found 5 of these.

Orange crystal with me playing around with basing stuff applied.

Other colored crystals. Militarum green base, apothecary white base and Black Templar bass

Thanks Shaso, he is huge, Titan sized in fact. He will be holding up my Wolverine drawing.

Jim Lee’s first drawing of Wolverine from when he lived in Saint Louis before working at Marvel. He shopped at a local comic shop a friend worked at who knew he was a great artist and asked him to draw wolverine. I have a notarized letter with it showing This was his first drawing of Wolverine, so it’s truly the jewel in my collection.

That is a seriously cool piece of memorabilia!

Crystals look really neat, they'd be perfect for objective markers as well as bases, could be anything from crystalline magic to space rocks to power crystals or what have you. Some white ones could make a neat Fortress of Solitude base for Supermullet as well.

Thanks Paradigm, I’m glad they’ve worked out, I’m thinking of stuff for a table in the future and multibasing for KOW3 possibilities.

Well I never got into the Bones kickstarters, so i entertain myself by looking through all of the figs at the LGS. Lately I’ve been picking a few up and painting them for fun. Since I’m painting icey stuff the Ice troll seemed logical, but I didn’t want to paint him as made of ice like the CMON figs I’ve been doing. Instead he is just going to be a cool green with ice on his back. Still WIP, but I think one of the better skins I’ve done in many years. Might be because I did so many freaking layers with him. Still not done by a long shot, but the ice crystal I need his hands still matched the hot glue ones I’ve done even thought it’s not translucent.

Thanks for looking. It’s my weekend to work, so off to the grind .

Was at miniature market and they had a bald with a dent on the back, so 40% off. Originally didn’t like the idea of the 40mm scale, but then while looking at scale sizes it’s basically O scale train size, which means cheaper terrain available in kits or prebuilt.

Yeah, a couple of those would be nice. The models I’d love to get would be based of John Byrne’s Next Men, though they mostly were humans with powers. But JB is my favorite artist/writer of comics, and we have the same birthday, just a few decades apart.

, might try that out, so far the assembly is smooth, though only done the terrain so far.

aku-chan wrote:Lovely skin on the big troll guy.

Thanks Aku-Chan, unfortunately the skin has gotten much lighter. Not sure if it’s because it was an old bones white model or just a lighting thing when I took the picture, but when I painted it, it felt darker . More pics later of him to show difference.

So I wasn’t going to start assembly of the marvel stuff right away.......

The website said 9 pieces of terrain. I guess they don’t count the trash can. One of the reasons I didn’t think the box was worth it was that all the content pics I saw only had the 10 figures in it, and the Daily Bugle and other terrain was shown off with the terrain pack. Bad marketing there as the box comes with all this shown. Once again the trash can I see not listed on the back of the box. Cars can be assembled without the taxi sign, but I went ahead and attached them to both, it I should a major metropolitan area after all.

Also while waiting for glue to dry I messed around with an old dreadnought base.

I think the ice effect really is working amongst all sorts of models.

Yeah, that base looks great.

Any chance you could grab me a scale shot of that terrain with some DCU minis? I'm guessing the 40mm vs 35mm is too much of a difference for the minis to look good together, but I wonder if the terrain might be worth getting for DCU.

The game might not have legs, but the models thus far are fantastic. Even as display pieces I think they are worth the effort, might be a little more than I was hoping for cost wise. I’m Marvel all the way too .

What are these plans people speak of I should look into acquiring one or two of those .

Seriously though, I flip and flop more than a politician when it comes to what to work on. Though these do tickle a certain fancy of mine.

So nothing to show. Lazy weekend here. Got some Christmas decorations up, but nowhere near what we’ve done in the past. Up at 3:15 a.m. due to one of our cats walking across my face saying she wants attention. Snow and ice here have forced schools off for Monday , which affects the kids Finals for the semester and used up all their snow days so now school will go longer into the spring. Wife being a teacher is not happy one bit . Saturday night we had our annual church staff dinner out. Great time was had by all, nice to just chill and talk without worrying about getting projects done, people coming in and interrupting conversations and just talk about all our kids and their lives.

Got a Amazon gift card in the mail from my other job, it just about covered the cost of the Hulk figure for the game, so it will be here on Tuesday. Thanks Amazon Prime . No idea who M.O.D.O.K. is, never read him in the comics, so I can wait on him. Hopefully sleep finds me before I crack this can of Kickstart open and I’m up the rest of the day. I work tonight so I’ll be leaving early because of the weather.

Pics or it doesn’t happen....I get it

p
Assembled 4 of the 10 core models, just went with the first four in the assembly guide. Speaking of the assembly guide . They made such wonderful models and clear guides...minus the part numbers . I cannot tell you how hard it is to work with such fiddle bits and not have the numbers listed on which ones go together. This happened to me on both Ms. Marvel and Doc Oc. The upper arms and lower arms on Ms. Marvel I glued together only to find out I had the arms wrong . Doc. Oc, had all the Mechandrites which had separate parts but didn’t know which ones go together without dry fitting them to the keys on his back. The other big issue I had was with the arms on the Red Skull, on the sprue it has the 4 parts of the arms in a row with upper, lower, upper and lower. So intuitively you’d think the first two go together and then the second two together, but it was part 1+4, 2+3 . The sprues have the parts numbered, why don’t the assembly guides?

Bases don’t seem to matter except for base sizes. The smaller sized bases come four on a sprue and you get two identical sprues in the box. The two larger bases are different two each other and come attached to a central joiner. Both types of bases have extra parts which I think are supposed to be used as scatter (looks like soda cans and traffic cones, but the cones are too small in scale). Once again these are not listed as parts so far in the assembly guide, I say so far as I have not gotten through the rest of the models, though these don’t seem to be shown on the back of the box, so I think they are extras.

Speaking of extras, in the forefront of my photo on the ground you’ll see some parts. These are extras, but they are odd extras. You need two of the claw parts for Doc Oc, but they put four on the sprue, two each of two, which again are numbered but no reference point of which ones to use on which area of the model. Also there’s also a duplicate tessaract cube. I mean exact duplicate, complete with red skull hand attached in the same way, so it can’t be used as an objective. Lastly there’s two Spider-Man heads, there might be some difference between the two, but I could not tell.

Anyway, I’ll try and get more done tomorrow, but might be a long day at church due to bad weather here. Though i am expecting some great items in the mail today. Hulk is one item, the other is super secret item that I get to preview . Be jealous , everyone will be wanting this item, and it will be available later.

Assembly is really pretty good aside from the unlabeled parts. No major burrs or seams when cut from the sprues. Though as I’ve read other places the joints on some models don’t perfectly fit so gaps are happening.

Heretic Tom wrote:Interesting notes on the Marvel stuff, thanks for the warning. I really want to pick those up , in the mean time I can't wait to see what you do with them!

Thanks Tom, I’ve started thinking about colors and not going all comic book style. With current temperatures it’s looking like post Christmas/New Years for priming at this stage.

Yes, lots of tiny parts, reminds me of Dreamforge models, just slightly larger.

Well Hulk smashed his delivery driver so now it’s Thursday delivery for him. Other items showing today still. At work for our Christmas party and usual fun now.

FYI, Atomic Mass Games has a digital assembly guide on their website with part numbers. I got my core set assembled and primed the weekend after release....and then I got painters block...or clean canvas block or whatever...afraid Im gonna mess them up. lol.

I couldnt afford Hulk or Modok, but the wife knows I want Hulk for Christmas...we'll see.

As far as upcoming releases, the Black Panther and Thor themed stuff isnt really exciting me....and if I do get Thor and Valk, I want to convert them to match the Ragnarok film...I'm really just stoked for Guardians of the Galaxy.

Excellent work as always Theo! Keep it up! I cant wait to see how you paint these up. (There, I've made my annual appearance )

Good to know, figured there had to be one out there. Thanks for the heads up.
I know the feeling of not affording one, just got my Christmas gift card which paid for him. Also just got two unexpected checks from doing people some favors at church and them returning the favor, so I might go grab MODOK tonight.
Not many of the upcoming releases excite me, oddly enough the garbage truck is high on the list.

I know it’s Christmas and deliveries are strange, but Hulk was scheduled for yesterday, then tomorrow, then he was at my house when I got home from working at church today .

I’m going to do some more assembly now.

Well, 2 hours of assembly, but core box and hulk are all ready for play.....what, you want paint

Little trouble during assembly, one of iron man’s shoulder pads flew into the microverse , stupid fiddly parts. I crawled around the floor for fifteen minutes with a flashlight to no avail . Of course it’s one of the parts where they don’t give you any spares . I put all the spare bits into a ziplock bag.

Also the super secret item arrived Time to start planning things out even more.

I’m surprised these models have so many parts. Ms Marvel has separate pieces for upper and lower arms? I would think they would be simpler kits. They are very dynamic so maybe the highly 3D poses forces them to be made from more separate parts since nothing is flat or straight. That Hulk model is really impressive.

But it makes me a little sad, that they are so fiddly. I hate small parts and am absolutely capable of ruining a miniature while assembling. And they really don't look, like they would have so many parts. Have fun painting them up!

Having finished the other models she is one of the easier to assemble . See the assembly instruction link below.

I dislike it too, but the details really do show. Having such skinny parts with texture on all sides and no mold lines has its costs.

So link I wish I knew about sooner . It’s even kind of hidden on the website, no in big bold letters on the main page, you have to use the drop menu to get to the assembly page.
https://static1.squarespace.com/static/5ce432b1f9d2be000134d8ae/t/5dcd9371e3b67a6ab2b73a27/1573753719547/Coreset+characters+assembly.pdf
Here you can see some of the travesties I’m talking about. Crossbones has a helmet piece and a piece that fits the front of the helmet . Ultrons upper thighs are each 3 pieces. Captain America has tiny pouches on his belt, luckily they give you doubles of these .

I’m sure in the painting of these the extra details will help out, but I’m sure there’s someone out there who is substituting heroclix figures.

Also realized that since I had pulled out my Tablescapes boards before for DCU, they will actually probably fit this game better. I’ll unbox them again tomorrow and try it out. PLUS EVERYTHING IS STILL IN VIRGIN GREY PLASTIC , so it’s meant to be Ah true love.

BRING ME X-MEN

Sorry for shouting, we now have the Christmas cold passing around the house .

A shame to hear about Iron Man's shoulder pad, we have all been there crawling around looking for tiny miniature bits. It is usually on that crawl that you find the bit you lost three months previous and no longer need!

And when do we get the super secret santa reveal?

4 Ground makes some nice stuff from what I’ve seen, not too surprising that the Batman ruff would be close in size as it’s closer to the MCP scale than 28mm scale stuff. Wish local shops carried it, but I think the Dust Tactics terrain I have sitting about will work as well.

ListenToMeWarriors wrote:A shame to hear about Iron Man's shoulder pad, we have all been there crawling around looking for tiny miniature bits. It is usually on that crawl that you find the bit you lost three months previous and no longer need!

True, I found the jug of simple green degreaser that has been holding my metal Escher gang for over a year and a half a shot well as some bits from Test if Honour that fell off the table too.

Super Secret Santa Stuff needs to be approved for showing........IT’S THAT FREAKING COOL . It’s going to be a few days before I can even give it the time of day to properly look at myself and might be the New Year because I work the next 6 straight (yep, Christmas is my next day off ). Plus I need to get approval first, which with our hectic schedules..... who knows.

Oh, last but not least I picked up a lonely M.O.D.O.K. today. He’s still grumpy and in his box, but stifled by cellophane so not much yelling can be heard.

Edit: who needs rest before work , assembled MODOK (tired of putting in the periods ).

Also some scale shots with DUST buildings and tablescape boards.

I think these look good together, the Quonset huts however are far too small as Red Skull would have to be ducking the entire time he is inside.

The tablescape boards will work nice as well even though the sewer lids are different sizes and the metal hatches for basement access are also different the fact that both are represented will help blend them together.

Thanks for looking

That's looking very snazzy indeed. The pic with cars is interesting, if anything they look a little big for the scale.

They are probably 1:40 scale as I have some 1:43 scale which are just smaller, but still usable. The 1:43 are just too small, the Red Skull stands taller than a SUV in 1:43 scale.

Great news, did some more crawling and found Iron Mans other shoulder pad . Glad I won’t have to buy another starter box , because I would.

Also looks like Sunday-Christmas may be warm enough to prime, so a White Christmas indeed .

Love the glue stick idea, stealing that one.

All looking great, nice little catch up, these superhero games all look interesting to me, but just not on my list yet. So will have to settle for vicarious living on Dakka. All looking great though.

I think most of your "toy" cars about this size are 1:43 ish. And "taller than an SUV" depends on the SUV, I should think both you and I can look across most roof tops at eachother, it is only the Real Deal that are truly tall, for us over here that would be Rangerovers etc. Most of our SUV stock is Audi/VW/Honda/Volvo, and they are not really that tall.

Yeah, I can see over most vehicles, so it’s believable, just the car also winds up wider than the SUV. Overall not a big deal if they aren’t right next to each other.

Thanks Shaso.

Have a cold beating my butt right now, but I managed to go prime the heroes and villains. I’m a little concerned it’s too cold, hopefully no problems so I can start painting soon. Pics later if I get enough energy before work.

Take care of yourself. As Count Rugen said, "If you don't have your health, you don't have anything." Or something.

Looking forward to those Marvel models more. They had them in the display case at the local store. Seeing them in the "flesh" really drives home how large they are. Ultron was particularly impressive, a model I would gladly buy on its own. Have you seen the Thanos they plan to release?

I have seen Thanos , and the Knight Models type gigantic base. They have gone full Warhammer 30k Primarch bases with him and the base the size of a city block . He looks great, the throne is not necessary to me though and just a tool to jump the price up.

Primer glopped up some details, but painting will commence.

Who first

HULK IS STRONGEST THERE IS!

I guess we have our....choice.

When it comes to Hulk I heartily recommend VJ Livery Green for really vibrant highlights.
