I'm curious to see what AMG pulls out of their bag as well. I think all this first line of scum stuff was at least partially in development by FFG.
Mandalorian stuff is finally getting into circulation
I hope we get an old Obiwan and the Rebels gang for the game at some point.
Thrawn should show up.
More gangsters (jabba, bib fortuna, enfys nest, etc.

I think we are getting some announcements as part of the Star Wars celebration later this week, if not then we have the AMG transmission event in early June.

We have already seen old Bobba and swoop bike (look to be criminal faction) models shown so hopefully is a full Mandalorian wave. I believe Moff Gideon and Dark Troopers were also confirmed but not shown.

Yeah, I'm looking forward to some news on models beyond the Shadow Collective. I hope we'll get something in the coming weeks.

Renders of Boba and the bikes have been posted on the previous page if you want to check them out.

Damn it! I have have a spare Krennic I wanted to convert to Gideon. I'll have to find a new use for that now.

Dark Troopers I'll take, thank you very much.

There will also be Ahsoka and... Ewoks.

I'm also 99.99% sure we're getting a rancor ridden by old boba.

I'd be happy if we got a Rancor. I wouldn't even insist on Boba riding it, though I reckon for a wargame a Rancor mount is a more sensible choice than a free one.

I wonder if they could make such a kit modular and have both a harnessed and a naked Rancor. I was actually surprised to find some of the character kits to have posing options when they moved to plastic. That's a pretty cool thing FFG did there, using available sprue space for some options. I wouldn't mind seeing more of that.

I'd imagine it's going to be fairly common going forward; AMG have been doing it with Marvel for a while and, at the very least, I'd think they'll continue with options for helmets/non-helmeted heads etc. for named characters. Probably find out more in a couple of weeks when they showcase their first non-FFG stuff in full.

AMG added an article for Gar Saxon and I assume that concludes the look at the Shadow Collective wave.

There's also an article about an upcoming card pack with new cards for the three bounty hunters. Card pack description from Asmodee's store:

Players can hire some of the most infamous mercenaries in the galaxy to join their armies with this card pack for Star Wars: Legion! The Upgrade Card Pack II contains updated unit cards for notorious bounty hunters Boba Fett, Bossk, Cad Bane, and even the A-A5 Speeder Truck that make them playable using the new mercenary rules introduced with the Shadow Collective Starter Set. Additionally, players will also find copies of the three new command card for use with mercenary units from the Shadow Collective Starter Set. Finally, this pack also includes a selection of 60 upgrade cards designed to help them get the most out of their mercenaries, including the new cards introduced in the Shadow Collective Starter Set.

Personally I think the newer sets are approaching GW level of plastic production quality and include a reasonable degree of customization for different weapon loadouts etc. They're usually simpler to put together (with some notable exceptions....yes I am looking at you B1 Droids!) and have almost zero mould lines or gaps to fill. What they are, is less elaborate and don't have scenic bases or the like. Maybe that will change when we start to see the AMG sculpts come through (though their first one is up to see....)

Are they pricy? I'd say that they're fairly averagely costed, depending on the set. Should note that they do all come with a plethora of cards and tokens to use them in game so you can't compare that price-tag purely on the model value.

Also new pics.

On the one hand I forgot that this was supposed to happen around this time, so there was no anticipation to get wrecked. On the other hand, now that I am reminded it's kind of a shame if it doesn't happen (as planned anyway). On the other, other hand, I certainly won't complain if we get something after all. I'm ready for some new stuff to look forward to.

It's still happening apparently and hopefully won't be too far down the line; maybe only a couple of weeks or so. All the promo material is presumably already done and (on the Legion side of things) they'd surely want to dovetail it in with the Shadow Collective release (next week!) and discuss how mercenaries are actually going to work before those rules drop. We'll see. The unique list builds for the existing factions were also supposed to drop prior to the event but haven't appeared yet. Hopefully there's some good stuff regardless.

What's with the funny hat?

So the battle force article for the Shadow Collective suggests that battle forces are themed lists of units with an alternate force organization chart that in the case of the Shadow Collective does not deviate much from the standard one. That doesn't sound too terrible.

That's exactly what the battle forces are (they talked about them in a bit of detail earlier this year when they were announced). Themed lists that play around with the Force Organization and are more specialized; restrict the options but improve what you can take.

The Republic 501st one is themed around Anakin (obviously), more veteran clones and more dynamic/mobile clone forces, ergo, it lets you take a lot of ARC Troopers. The Imperial Blizzard Force (invasion of Hoth from Ep5.) is focused on Veers/Vader and is centred around heavier/vehicle type gameplay. Lots of Snowtroopers and adds a type of Stormtrooper unit that can take more heavy weapons than standard.

Naturally but I'm sure they'll appear down the line. The Shadow Collective Battleforce is a very specific thing (without Jawas) rather than any broader 'Scum and Villainy' type faction and these initial Mercenary releases are designed to go along with that; the Pykes and Black Sun just give options for the other factions too. Having mercs in the game is how they're addressing things like Bounty Hunters going forward so it's pretty open ended in that regard. It's not like they've added a single Hutt yet either and between those, Mando, the already announced 'Old-man Boba' and fan favourites like Jawas or Hondo and his pirate gang there's a lot they can do with mercenaries.

Mandalorian wise we are also getting Moff Gideon and Dark Troopers.

Hopefully they can find a way to let us build a good Mandalorian / Fett force.

Would be good to get a Pyke syndicate force as seen in season 2, already have the basic unit including commander. Just need a extra options. Those large droids would do double duty for Confederacy armies as well.

I can see them doing Boba's (miniscule) criminal empire as a Battleforce in the same manner as the new Shadow Collective one. Lots of Commander/Operative slots but limits on most other things. Would bulk out the Bounty Hunter options too now that they're more widely available (Black Krrsantan!).

Core units would probably have to be a sort of 'civilian militia' type though they'd maybe also find a place in the Rebel list as well. Lots of single character squads. A Rancor.

Unfortunately that might also necessitate the Mod gang being a thing.

We're seeing Ewoks. I think we're past the point of questioning whether things that received mixed reactions get added to the game. Hard to imagine space vespas aren't coming. But just to be sure they should release Bombad General Jar Jar first.

I think it would actually be cool to get a squad of hillbillies as the core for Boba's army, and hopefully as a hireable merc unit for other armies. I know Legion isn't meant to be a place for counts as, but it wouldn't just be good for Rebel militia but could as easily be used for Imperial technicians caught in the crossfire, and various house/corporate/royal guards from the Clone Wars. But then I'd also like unnamed bounty hunters, unnamed Jedi, and so forth and that's just not something we're getting. At least we have unit cards for unnamed captains. That's something, I guess.

I wonder if we'll see a plastic redo of some Imperial and Rebel units at some point or if they intend to keep the PVC models forever and focus entirely on new things that don't exist yet.

Geifer,

Legion is absolutely the place for "counts as" or proxies. Outside of tournaments, nobody has an issue with using 3d printed Jedi in place of Obi-Wan or Anakin.

I use a converted Storm Commando as Iden since I don't use Imperial Special Forces/Inferno Squad.

My buddy has a printed named Clone Captain he uses in place of Rex.

People have printed off Republic Galactic Marines to use as Phase II Clones.

3d printed Thrawn minis to use as Krennic.

The list goes on. Most of us treat those named profiles as templates to create characters, since you can change how they play to suit your idea of that character through your command hand and upgrades.

I mean, yeah. I do that, too. I only recently added Governor Pryce to my collection and I intend to find a commander unit that fits her for whenever I get to play her and my fledgling Empire army that is still direly lacking in painted Corps units.

It's just that the game is pretty low on options and upgrades. I don't mind that so much because it makes for a reasonably balanced game. I like that about FFG's efforts. I guess I have a nebulous idea of where I would want a game to be between set units with a handful of options at best and full RPG customization, and I don't see Legion particularly close to that point.

Sure, that level of customization would be lovely but probably a completely different game prospect at that point (though I don't quite agree that there's not many options currently though it naturally varies heavily between unit types).

There seems to be a genuine clamour for Gungans to be in the game and they'd certainly be unique. Probably more likely now AMG have taken over the reigns from FFG. Will be interesting to see how far down the rabbit-hole the game goes in terms of 'generic' operatives like random Jedi Knight #6 (though with that particular case they'd probably be more likely to just expand the amount of named Jedi available to GAR. Notable absence of a certain purple lightsaber thus far). Battleforces probably provide a useful mechanism to introduce more specific factions/characters such without unbalancing existing factions.

The redux of existing models into HIPs seems to (understandably) come up a lot. I seem to recall AMG saying they'd like to do it but it's a question of priorities. I know I'd cheerfully replace every basic Stormtrooper I already own if they got a new kit; basically anything that came out alongside the original starter set is pretty rough by the standards of their releases now. a HIPs Vader and (non Limited Edition) Luke wouldn't hurt either.

I don't see them replacing old kits. I don't think there's any money in that honestly. I don't know that they're making that much off the battle forces (maybe selling leftover, re-packaged stock) I know I can't use anymore stormtroopers. I"ve already customized and converted and painted all the stormtroopers I ever care to. Soft plastic poses were way easier to convert than the sprue figures up to now anyway. (MCP figures are very difficult to convert as extra parts are hard to come buy and the scales are different with each figure and the poses are weird for that)

I do think we'll see a lot of these IG-11/88 type packs though. Mace Windu and Kit Fisto (for example) in a 2 pack for $30 or whatever.

I'm completely the other way with the conversion potential; those soft plastics are bloody awful for attempting to chop up and swap arms/weapons and the like because of how bespoke each pose is. Compared to something like the Phase IIs and the ARC kits that you can pretty much swap out heads/arms at will with very little need to gap fill. Give me HIPs all day. I can't see that there's a scale issue in M:CP at all but, even if that's the case, there's not really as much demand/scope for conversion there than in something like Legion where you're actually going to have multiples of the same model.

I do see them replacing them at some point; there seems to be a demand, whether that's just a vocal minority, or me projecting or something, I couldn't say but they've indicated it as something they're looking at already at least.

I always held that they're a prime candidate for expansion of the Republic because they're not just a rare example of a non-clone army fighting the Separatists in the name of the Republic, but unlike Wookiees who are only shown to defend their home planet, they're actually deployed away from Naboo. In my opinion Republic and CIS can get pretty samey. Getting units that are not clones or droids can really open them up visually.

And since Wookiees actually got their miniatures, there isn't even any competition for Gungans anymore. On the Republic side anyway. Seppies could do with some bugs or whatever first, I reckon.

Also, people want their Clone Wars era troll choice now that the Galactic Civil War gets Ewoks.

I assembled my starter box models shortly after release and because I got volunteered to the rebellion (and made general, go figure) right afterwards I hadn't even looked at the Stormtroopers until two months ago. Yeah, you can definitely see they have "early attempt" written all over them. The sergeant is nice and the DLT-19 trooper is largely inoffensive, but the E-11 troopers sure look like they walk, shoot and fail like Stormtroopers.

I wouldn't replace my Stormtroopers, not the least because of how much work they are to paint, but I sure would add a couple of boxes of new sculpts to my collection. And a box or two for conversion bits.

Also, straight guns. Long, thin PVC guns suck. I'd happily pay up again just to get away from that.

As are Wookiees, the movies only show them defending their home world, but lore wise and in the Clone Wars series they are shown and described as supporting Republic forces on other fronts.

A large portion of their forces converged back to their home world to defend it, but that was not the only place the supported the war effort.

From Wookieepedia:

"During the Clone Wars and the reign of King Grakchawwaa, the Wookiees remained fiercely loyal to the Galactic Republic and fought alongside them in several star systems. Towards the end of the conflict, Wookiee forces also defended their homeworld from a Separatist invasion with the help of Galactic Republic forces led by Jedi Master Yoda, who had good relations with them."

Not sure if anyone was curious or if it was known already, but Shadow Collective Maul and Rook are a shared sprue so will be a single box whenever they get released separately.

I saw an unboxing video, I found that to be interesting as well.

I take that as they will not be released as a single box anytime soon, since Shadow Collective is a starter... or they will get released as a single box in a couple of years.

Find it hard to see them release them by themselves anytime soon though. The Shadow Collective starter is a great way to move a varied collection of product. The real money is going to be made when a player decides they want all Pykes/Black Sun and buys 5 more boxes of them at full MSRP.

Yeah, that's interesting. It never even occurred to me that Rook wouldn't be in the Mandalorian box, what with the back of the battle force box showing her with them.

Normally I'm not a fan of box exclusives and Maul and Rook should be made available separately as a matter of principle, but for myself I can say I'm no terribly bothered in this case. The battle force offers a great discount. You pay for two squads and get the third squad and characters for free compared to the individual boxes. That works great for me since I definitely wanted a box of Pykes and Mandalorians.

It's not even like full MSRP on the individual boxes is outrageous. They're the same as other infantry boxes. Since that was the norm for Legion since the beginning, the addition of such a nice discount box gets a thumbs up from me.

I ended up buying two starters with a Super Commando box coming so I can run at least three full squads of these characters.

The bonus here is that I have two of everything now, so I can at least model the second Rook as something different, and have both stances for Maul

Gar, the third squad, and the upgrade pack should all be arriving Monday

Even if they remain an exclusive it's probably not a major issue considering the Shadow Collective is a very limited force in terms of options so there's not many instances where you wouldn't want to get the starter set when wanting to buy into the faction.

Especially when it's such good value; suspect a lot of people will be getting multiples considering it's generally the same price as buying 2 squads.

Is there a handy link that explains which Legion releases are hard plastic, and which are resin? I've only purchased one figure (a very well-cast resin Bossk) so I'm out of the loop on this.

For the hard plastic kits, are they good quality? Are any of them decent for creating a variety of poses / kitbashing?

I haven't seen a guide on it, though some sellers like Miniatures Market usually list it in the description.

The kits are very good quality in my experience, though they lack a lot of poseability. Some, such as the new commanders, usually have alternate arms to make a different pose but for your baseline infantry it'll take some cutting and potentially greenstuff work to do anything.

None of them are in Resin. You've got hard plastic for all the newer sets and then the original 'softer' PVC plastics (which is what that Bossk model will have been). The softer ones are sort of a bridge between board game PVC quality and more traditional wargame plastics; actually pretty decent but the HIPs stuff is much better for detail, mould lines and, for me, customization; you get a lot of spare bitz.

AMG has put up an article about the upcoming Swoop Bike Riders:

Vibro-ax, you say? I was interested in whether the kit comes with head options so you can have more than the two guys shown in the picture, but now I don't care anymore because I am so going to convert Gamorreans on bikes. Pigs will fly!

Gamorreans could be a thing before too long anyway (can only hope). We know there's more 'Scum and Villainy' type releases to come this year and I can only imagine we're building towards a Jabba/Hutt Syndicate battleforce list (or similar) at some point.

Really? On the one hand, that could save me work. On the other hand, it really depends on when we might get those Scum models. On the other, other hand, I really don't work very fast, so I may not even get to the Swoop Bikes before that happens. Could be good.

So back to hoping we're going to see a heftier model preview in the non too distant future.

I will say though that as nice as Scum and Villainy is to have, I'd appreciate it if they'd release Ahsoka already. I've been made to wait long enough...

Still, back to that article, I really like this whole mercenary business. I've had an idea for a Rebel army and getting some options for hire is very much appreciated. Got to break out the unit cards in the Shadow Collective box to see what options I have.

Well they've rescheduled the Ministravaganza for 14th-16th July so hopefully there's more to be revealed then.

Those Swoop Bikes are available for Rebels and you can have the Pykes from Shadow Collective; think that's all they're getting for now (until Mando comes out).

I am just hoping that them correcting the card image for the Swoop Bikes from Crit to Block to now Surge to Block means we can expect that to be on the physical card as well.

I absolutely love the wave of new releases that are mostly AMG designed from a game perspective, but the rules errors, forgotten cards, and misprints with this wave have been atrocious for a group that designed a game from their previous company they worked at that focused on rules clarity and accuracy.

Hoping the embarrassment of their string of errors gives them the motivation to do better.

Curious, outside of the missing Gar Saxon shield card and the temporary misprint on the Swoops (prior to release at that; hopefully they caught it in time), what errors have there been like this? Can't say I've noticed a 'string' of issues as such. Actual embarrassment might be coming at it a bit strong.

Ah, I should have been more clear. I was also including the errors they have made in things like their game streams, where they played the Pykes heavy weapons with the wrong profile, the 501st Legion 1 pip (that counts as a 2 pip) command card that says "Clone Commander Rex" instead of "Clone Captain Rex", and while not Legion related... their bungling of X-Wing 2.5 which caused one of the first major tournament finals after the change to be won in the deployment phase due to how AMG designed the scenario.

Outside of the X-Wing situation (which I don't follow to be honest) I don't really see any of those as major concerns. Or concerns at all to be honest; I don't think I've ever watched a game designer play their own game on live stream and not balls up one of the rules, which isn't necessarily surprising when it comes to showcasing new stuff given they've probably got any number of different versions and variations on the rules for that model swirling about in their head. I'm not pedantic enough to care if they make mistakes on their streams.

The mistakes such as the 'commander' on the Rex card (assuming that's made it to print and not just an error on the version they showcased; or if it was even an error at all, maybe there's an alternative Rex from his brief promotion) are undoubtedly more annoying but that's all it is for me; a mild annoyance. It doesn't actually impact the gameplay and given points cost changes/errata/balancing changes etc. make a chunk of the physical cards pretty redundant down the line it's not like there's no chance that they'll offer updated physical versions at some point (they've just done this with MCP).

The new Nuln Oil mix looks like it could be perfect for Clones and Stormtroopers over a zenethil highlight. A lot less staining than the current version.

Yeah, that's not bad. When GW announced the new paints my first thought was that the new grey shade might be the go to for easy Stormtroopers and clones. I haven't seen any pictures of that shade yet, though, and the new Nuln Oil looks pretty usable without the stains on the high areas the old one created.

I've seen a guy online (Nomad Paintworks) who does his Clones and Stormtroopers almost exclusively just with a bright (but matt finish) white primer, nuln oil/medium wash and then some edge highlights and it's honestly the best painted examples around. Adopted the method myself and it's really effective (albeit I can't match his quality). This change to Nuln oil might even make it easier.

That’s whose scheme I have been following as well. I only actually started a couple of weeks ago, painted 3 troopers and then the new paints were announced so have put it on hold until they are released. My troopers looked good but were definitely more gray than white, hopefully this new nuln oil may fix that.

It all came down to the quality of the white for me; had to be very matt and a good, solid white. Not off-white or grey. Haven't had the Nuln 'stain' the white at all, just go into the recesses so it might be a case of how much medium you're using or how quickly you're spreading it.

It seems like Chewie in an AT-ST is a Field Commander, they hinted at him being a way to deal with the morale issues Ewoks have, and seemed like they were hinting at possible keywords like Cunning he may have with how they put an emphasis on that word when talking about needing a "cunning" plan to make Ewoks with Chewie in a chicken walker work.

Not a huge fan of Moff Gideon's sculpt, and the Dark Troopers rules look great... but man those flying minis don't do it for me.

Dark Troopers are beautiful. I'm not big on flying infantry in general, so I'll have to sleep on those, but they don't have flying stands and the poses look like they can work on the ground, so they should be a quick conversion away from walking.

I don't know if I have any problem with Gideon's sculpt. Looks like how I'd expect him to look. But that paintjob seems like a big departure from what FFG used to give their Legion models and more at home in Crisis Protocol. Which shouldn't be all that surprising, of course.

It's good that Ewoks get to be a force of their own for those inclined to make an Ewok troll army. Nice sculpts and probably way too cuddly to pass up buying a squad.

Dunno, 2 Suppression and 2 Immobilize is pretty damn good, even if it's only a limited range (and random). A free heal is always nice as an alternative, especially on Mando himself with his solid armour.

Ahsoka being in her rebel incarnation first is certainly a choice, especially given the absolute dearth of Operative options for GAR; at least she's confirmed to get multiple versions.

I do like that Battleforces are going to give breathing room for things like Ewoks without completely bloating existing factions.

It's kind of funny, too. She was introduced in Clone Wars, plays a major role in Clone Wars and is Anakin's apprentice. Whereas she's a rarer side character in Rebels. So which version do we make (first)? Any takes?

But I'm not complaining. If they want me to buy two Ahsokas, I'll buy two Ahsokas. Oddly enough I'm more likely to play Rebels anyway, even though I want her more for Republic. So doing it this way may even be better for me.

It does make sense in terms of release parity. There does though seem to be a degree of saltiness amongst GAR-only players in general (for various reasons) and compounded by one of the factions' most iconic characters being released in a lesser-known iteration; seems to have felt like a bit of a slap in the face to some. I don't really agree with any of that but I've seen the sentiment expressed.

Part of the issue is possibly that GAR have also gained the least from any of the new/announced mercenary units (basically Pykes).

AMG did say that another Commander option is coming out for them in the same wave as Ahsoka and Ventress though so guesses on who that might be (probably Cody or Windu being the obvious candidates).

While it would be cool to get more non-clone troops for the Republic, I'd prefer if we got older Saw for Rebels.

But I guess getting Saw at all is preferable, and there's always a chance of getting both down the line.

 Stormonu wrote:

I imagine that's not easy to do with the way the models are boxed with the rules. Teenage Ahsoka looks different from adult Ahsoka, so if they included rules for both they would have to decide on a single sculpt that is not representative of one era or the other.

I'll be honest, that's probably the last iteration of Saw that I think of but I suppose that'd at least be on point given the Ahsoka option. GAR probably do need some more core options though I couldn't say what would fir best. Gungans being in a Battleforce seems like a no-brainer though the basic troopers could probably make their way over to the generic GAR roster.

I think it'll be Cody. There's currently only one-named Clone Commander and apparently he'll turn up in Bad Batch S2 so the timing aligns.

I'm surprised we've not heard anything about Senate Commandos yet.

I wouldn't be surprised if it's Cody. Outside chance of Wolffe.

I think they're more likely to do the Clone Commandos; one of the Devs apparently loves them though they'd need to be made distinct from ARCs to justify the competing slot (not that ARCs are especially popular at the minute it seems; all the jump-troop/Mandalorian options are considered in a bad place rules/points wise).

I don't know if it's all the GW kits I've built, but so far I've had no issues with any of my kits. What's wrong with the PVC stuff?

Star Wars Legion News - Ministravaganza reveals. p.59. @ 2022/09/18 20:23:03

Post by: Geifer

Aside from disliking the material in principle, I find large pieces hard to work with. A part of my wrecked AT-ST's crew compartment was pretty warped and getting it to fit involved a lot of work and even more swearing. It wasn't even a matter of heating it and bending it back to shape as you normally would with PVC. The part was just too thick to make that work.

Additionally, the PVC base that was originally straight deformed a little after I glued a leg on and the leg tried to pull back into its bent shape and because the glue wouldn't shift, what it was glued to did. It's nothing major, mind you, but this kind of thing annoys me.

It's just that I much prefer hard plastic that is engineered with more precision, usually has a lot less warping issues and is easier to fix due to how plastic cement works.

Star Wars Legion News - Ministravaganza reveals. p.59. @ 2022/09/21 08:41:13

Post by: JimmyWolf87

The PVC kits did improve a little over time but the change to hard plastic was a game-changer; they're excellent kits at this point with little-to-no clean up or gap filling needed. I wouldn't complain at this point if AMG remade some of the earlier core troops, probably with a new Starter box. Basic Stormtroopers and Rebels (and the Phase 1 Clones) at least.

Some of the cards are misprinted with wrong text or dice pool. I hadn't heard about the CIS box having issues, what do you mean not all of the pilots are in it?

Din looks good, I don't think he's broken. He also carries a major handicap with Grogu who is going to be painfully easy to kill and then collect for a skilled player.

Post by: ingtaer

The T-Series and Lok Durd pilot cards are not included, Lok is not legal for the SI but T series is, so one would have to get the cards separately if one wanted to use them (anywhere that proxying matters...).

Din does not have to take the Child. He does have the option to take a gun that can fire across the table to take a wound off any target in LOS (like the child...) regardless of it having counterpart/small/incognito/being in a closed transport etc on a 75% chance.
He also can also have 2r3b pierce in melee (plus immune pierce), speed 3 jump 2, has tactical and if not issued an order gains a dodge and an aim.
He also costs the same as Cad and Bane, less than Boba or Sabine and is more powerful than any of them.

The thing is, to maximize him you can't give him a face up order. So that's going to cut into your maneuverability a bit in terms of going first with him.

From what I have been told, none of the terrain packs besides the crashed escape pod have sold all that well. Mainly due to them not really working well in the game since they have their own bespoke themed battle cards and missions that aren't compatible with the normal game format of bids and battle decks.

And the only reason the escape pod has sold well was that R2 and C-3PO are legal minis to use in both Rebels and Republic.

It's definitely pricey. Probably put a fair few people off for that reason and the included rules catering to a more narrative, occasional play. Prices for Legion seem to vary pretty wildly between sites/sets so I'm sure if someone really wanted it then it won't be hard to find it at half that price in a few months.

Wait till you see the UK RRP for the upcoming Dark Troopers....

I do think, specifically in the UK, Legion is going to be seeing some rough price uplifts on new sets as Asmodee are hiking up the RRPs/trade costs on items they distribute (down to logistics, value of ÂŁ etc.).

Gideon looks pretty great without being unbalanced. Probably going to be competing with Veers or even Krennic for a space in their type of list, though you can also afford to chuck him into melee. Adds a lot of order control for Dark Troopers who are themselves going to be very interesting to see how fare competitively.

Star Wars Legion News - Ministravaganza reveals. p.59. @ 2023/01/05 18:17:11

Post by: NH Gunsmith

Gideon AND Krennic is going to be wild.

Compel to get a free move on a unit of Stormtroopers with T-21 and Specialist, Ruthless to take a wound and get a free Recover action, use their Specialist, and than shoot with an Aim and end up 1 wound down but having lost all your Suppression and gotten a free Aim out of it.

Not sure how well AMG has thought out how Ruthless is going to combine with the other abilities like Compel or Pull The Strings, unless the new rulebook coming out this month gives a limit to free actions.

edit. Disregard, I mixed up my timing windows for those abilities. Does not work as I mentioned above.

It's possible but you'd be pretty low on Activations; not as crippling as before with the Pass introduction but a 7 activation list is still going to have to put out a hell of a lot of damage or have a very gimmicky play in certain scenarios to be remotely viable.

On paper, they look like they've come in at a good spot (same as Gideon), some powerful stuff in the kit, without being too good. That Assault Cannon basically doubles their damage output so it's probably worth its cost on a single squad at least. You sort of have to think of them as a 6+ wound tank that's slow, but durable with some very nice damage potential and activating twice a round can't ever be overlooked, especially when Empire has plenty of options for shenanigans to increase the amount of actions they could pull off. Fire Support from Gideon's 3-Pip will be tasty, especially if it can get dovetailed in to gain some other keywords on an attack. Krennic's 1-Pip could be excellent at getting them running when you need them. Biggest limitations are probably their short-to-average range and they're (appropriately) going to get melted by lightsaber users in melee.

Expecting we'll see a swift errata to anticipate the upgrade options in the revised core rules (next week?), or at least something when the Dark Troopers are released as, yes, currently they can get some daft stuff. The Comms Technician or the Imperial Officer would also basically be just a stupid way of getting an extra Dark Trooper in the squad (with special rules on top no less) for either half or nearly a quarter of the points cost of an actual extra Dark Trooper. Getting a T-Series on them would be hilarious.

Some broad details have come out on the Imperial Remnants Battleforce from an AMG stream. Sounds fun and weird at the same time. Shouldn't be particularly overpowered.

Gideon as Commander with Stormtroopers, Shoretroopers, Death Troopers and Scout Troopers all counting as Core for purposes of list building (but not command cards or other triggers) and you have to take at least one of each before a multiple of the same unit. You can also mix any Heavy Weapon upgrade into any other squad (so a Scout-Trooper Sniper could go into Death Troopers or the Stormtrooper Missile Launcher could go into Shoretroopers etc.). Going to be some funky lists with trying to get the best keyword combos. Can also take E-Webs, Speeder Bikes and the new Dark Troopers. Some extra shenanigans with giving out Orders beyond a certain range and getting an Independent effect on units.

No Battleforce specific Command Cards and will just be a digital release.

It is indeed very strange, as Rebels really didn't need another Operative (they already have 7 they can take). GAR (the faction Ashoka was a soldier in first) REALLY needs a combat focused Operative since they only have 2 Operatives, and they are Padme and RD-D2.

Yeah super disappointed with her being for Rebellion. Could've done her as a Padawan or her season 7 version as a Republic Operative, would've been way more useful. I think everyone was surprised to see Fulcrum before Padawan, especially given the state of GAR Operative access but it could just be a case of wanting some faction parity for this general wave of releases for the start of the year.

Empire - Gideon and Dark Troopers
CIS - Ventress
GAR - Cody and friends.
Rebels - Ahsoka

Could also be to tie in with the upcoming Ahsoka Disney+ series and it just didn't quite align because something got pushed back or brought forward. I like the model anyway and Rebels were shy another Force user so I won't grumble personally.

Ahsoka in April brings them up to date with the smaller splash releases already announced and May is the time to either release or announce something substantial so wouldn't be surprised to see that Ewok Battleforce get showcased.

This Ahsoka is closer in the timeline to Mandalorian era Ahsoka, so it may well be meant as a tie-in, but she's the version from the Rebels animated show, not the upcoming live action show.

...did I not suggest exactly that as a possibility?

If that is (was) the intended plan though, it's not quite aligned as the model is dropping in April whereas the D+ series doesn't currently have a release date (and is probably going to be June/July at the very earliest for a guess and potentially quite a bit later).

Regardless, it's not a direct tie-in anyway as this is the younger Fulcrum version from the SW: Rebels animated series rather than live action Rosario Dawson from The Mandalorian and (at some point) Ahsoka on Disney+

Nice. Geonosians. That's what I like to see. Well, not them specifically, but non-droid, non-clone Clone Wars forces. Wese be havin' our time in the sun, boyos!

Cool to get Inquisitors, but I'm not sure I like the AMGification of Seventh Sister's lightsaber. It's still restrained, I suppose, but I'd prefer if we didn't get special effects like that.

I like Seventh Sister far more than this Fifth Trooper mini. The one for Shatterpoint makes this one look absolutely terrible.

100% agree on that; feels like the Legion and Shatterpoint Fifth Brothers were supposed to have the same pose but it just didn't work for the Legion one somehow. Least it'll be HIPs so should be easy enough to change some posing around. I will say that the model photographed was probably a resin prototype piece so the final version might be slightly better.

There are some excellent 3d models out there for purchase that I suspect most players will be fine with using as bad batch. I'm really a big fan of the original clone commandos (the pre-xbox game ones) in pure white from the comics.

I'm glad to see that Legion is still getting some love but the hardening cynic grognard in me wonders if this is just stuff that was in the pipeline already. Regardless, lots of cool models!

I don't know. Seems like this isn't the worst time for Clone Commandos. Republic is or isn't represented in the preview depending on what's going to happen with the Bad Batch. I'm assuming they'll be dual Republic and Rebels, the former with a limit on Omega maybe?

If they're just Rebels, that leaves the Republic without a release here. I could see Clone Commandos as a good fit because they're still in use by the Empire after the clones have effectively been decommissioned. Even if the Bad Batch is dual use, could be interesting to get the same treatment for Clone Commandos.

That is my gut feeling as well. Giving us Arc Troopers as a squad (instead of, say, a two model box of customisable Arc Trooper operatives) always felt like a super weird move that kind of occupied the design space that Clone Commandos should have filled. I always hoped we would some day get a 4 model box of Clone Commandos plus an optional male and female padawan (either / or) as a nod to Etain. Now that we have Bad Batch which is.. so similar, it feels like the door is closed on Clone Commandos unless AMG want to give players a way of fielding a non-unique version of more or less the same squad.

While they are made from the same boxes, Empire and Rebels have generic versions of bother Inferno Squad and Clan Wren, so it is at least possible that AMG will have zero issues selling you a box of generic Clone Commandos.

I could imagine Clone Commandos being a 3 mini (plus heavy option)/4 mini with no heavy option, 2 wounds per mini unit with a weapon config. Would make them distinct enough in design space from ARCs, and I think even Bad Batch, who will likely have a slew of keywords like Inferno Squad, that it could justify adding them if a player wanted a cheaper option.

Bad Batch might end up being in the Operatives slot (or even take up multiple slots). Bound to be a keyword soup which is pretty impactful in Legion so I can see AMG thinking outside the box a little (as they're doing with the Inquisitors) in terms of how they'll fit into the army building structure.

Commandos should have enough to distinguish them from ARCs so I think there's a strong case for them coming; they'll know how often they're requested as an option and GAR needs that roster padding out quite a bit. Less mobile than ARCs but maybe with natural surges, an option for Blast weapons and a bit beefier in melee with vibro-knives or something.

I think that the Bad Batch could all be Operatives and Counterparts. So you could pick up to three main Operative figures, then attach Counterparts to each to make the whole lot fit into normal army list building. Possible?

It's how I've always supposed they'd work to be honest. Maybe even just Hunter as the only default model in the unit and everyone else is an upgrade. Or they take 2 Operative slots but you can split them into 2 squads when deploying. Or some combination of those/similar things. Can't see them just being a normal special forces slot unit; you're going to want Command Cards for those characters.

Part of me wouldn't mind them sneaking in an Imperial Crosshair upgrade card.

Whichever squad Wrecker is in takes Suppression if it's on top of terrain more than height 1?

So, apparently this is happening:

Redone AT-ST with commander options:

The intimidating Imperial AT-ST returns to Star Wars: Legion! Featuring new engineering that allows for a better assembly experience, the AT-ST in this pack adds firepower to any army. Additionally, the miniature in this pack now features new customization options, allowing players to assemble it with General Weiss or Chewbacca in the top hatch. Finally, this pack includes both the Imperial unit card and the Chewbacca unit card found in SWL110 - Logray & Wicket, inviting players to explore all the possibilities this unit has to offer right away.

The old one was done in plastic that did not take plastic cement very well. Just casting it in their current plastic is an improvement. But a presumably unassembled body with commander options for the top hatch is also very welcome.

Also, high quality pictures of target practice:

Points/Balance update should be this month. Dark Troopers and Blizzard hopefully getting an appropriate nerf-bat applied without them going crazy (fully expect DTs to not be allowed to have Guardian on their defence and some points adjustments). Personally I'd remove speeders from Blizzard Force entirely; they're not exactly thematic and skew the balance/playstyle of that Battleforce into something I don't it's supposed to be. Especially when there's an Endor themed Imperial Battleforce on the way which you'd imagine would feature them heavily as well (and far more appropriately).

Bit surprised we haven't had another Ministravaganza to fully show off Ewoks yet but they've probably been busy touring round with Shatterpoint promotion.

The Speeders in Blizzard are so weird. I've always kind of assumed they were a result of trying to repackage the starter into a single faction version but that doesn't quite make sense either.

I do think its funny that both Empire forces are based on iconic E-Web moments without either really featuring the E-Web.

I assume it was to lean into the 'Vehicle-Empire Force' theme (given they obviously can't just whack an AT-AT on the table) but it's still a bit of a square peg in a round hole. E-Webs becoming more prominent would be much better for Blizzard (given they need a buff in general- Longshot or just a flat Range increase...).

I haven't really got any complaints about the points changes in isolation. There's maybe a couple of oddities in there but generally the stuff that's overperforming got hit and the stuff that's barely used got lowered. For me it's more a case that they need to make some more structural changes to certain units (and Battleforces) to really address the issues, not just adjust the points.

Dark Troopers probably need to lose any benefit from other units' Guardian as a minimum. With the Heavy Response uplift, Blizzard Force just needs its options altering (a cap on Speeders?). Both Rebel and Shadow Collective Mandos need a buff somehow. Even cheaper they just don't do enough for their low model count. Another useful keyword like Reliable or something.

Yeah, I agree and the largest issue in the game at the moment is Blizzard Force and this change does nothing to impact it what so ever. I think we really needed a CRB change at the same time as the points to reign it in as well as make some fundamental changes to various units. Though I really hate the increased cost of BSE and the mag dets. I also agree that Blizz needs to be capped on bikes (I would go 0-2 like Remnant) and I would like to see something else change with Dark Troopers, maybe Armour 2 or 3 rather full.

From CIS perspective all of the drops in points are nice enough but I very much doubt any of them will make any sort of difference. If we go down the list;
BX full unit and shields drop in points (4 and 8), okay these are both reasonable but Magnaguard are still just plain better at a very similar points cost, in the same role, with better AI, better ranged attack and better heavy.
Grievous goes down 5 and his gun is now free (saving 8 points, 13 total), that is pretty cool but his main issue is that he pretends to be a melee beat stick when he is just not that good at it and as a support commander he is way underperforming as his command cards are not great and the STDs and even T Series perform the role better.
Droideka, down 5 points. And what? They are still woeful, they die to easily and lack decent offense. Maybe if they dropped by 15 they would be viable?
Dooku down 10. This is better but is kind of offset by the fact that Choke goes up 5 so you are really only saving 5. He could really do with either a training slot or charge to be competing at the level of the other force commanders though.
STD generic down 5. Cool. Not sure if it makes it more viable but 5 points off is nice.
For me though the number one thing in CIS that really needed an adjustment though is B2s, I love them dearly but they are just such a liability now armour 1 behind non surging white saves and with AI attack is just bad, especially for the cost. There was a reason that everyone took BSE instead! (Though B2s still rock in skirmish I have found). Not sure how this would be fixed but maybe if they had better armour, surge to block or red saves they could be salvaged.

I like pretty much all of the other changes though, really nice to see CLuke getting a drop as does half the rebel line up by the looks of it! Not sure than Tauntauns needed any adjustment though. My greatest pause with everything else is the massive drops in GAR vehicles, beam saber going down 25 and ISP 15. It would be nothing in most GAR forces but now with Cody out it could prove to be quite a different story.

0-2 would also be a nice thematic cap, since the
AT-ATs could each hold two bikes inside their garages.

The "meta" Blizzard Force lists seem to have gone up about 30 points according to the Discord. I think at this point all they really need to do is remove Operative Vader from the battle force.

The points increases between what changed with this round of changes, and using Commander Vader instead of Operative Vader will make their bid so low that they can't just cheese their way into using their battle deck every match if they want to continue using the same build. The speed decrease of Vader would also help reign in how well the battle force does on the objectives it likes.

Feel like that would be a better start to trying to reign that battle force in than cutting the bike allowance in half, as people have already bought the minis to play it. CVader and OPVader are interchangeable minis, so doesn't invalidate any purchases.

I like the light touch on this round of points changes, as I think a light change to a few units is going to work out better than sweeping points changes across the game. We all know how little play testing gets done by studios and their small groups versus what is done by global communities. Prefer them to focus in on a few units at a time and test those changes more.

Blizz looses OP Vader.

When did the E-Web have Plodding?

Force Choke is a weird one. I don't mind it getting a slight nerf, even if there wasn't exactly clamour for it that I could see. The points increase seems utterly redundant. An extra (free) wound is obviously nice but it's not going to be anything like worth taking up a Force upgrade slot now.

Also Ewok units remove one fewer suppression token in the end phase. That will hurt.

I do not see the advantage of running it over a normal Rebel army with Ewoks and Mercenaries. I guess you get to run extra Commanders without anything that would make doing so a worthwhile plan. Really, it seems like its just to spam Ewoks if you're so inclined.

Spamming Ewoks, stealing enemies weapons and running an AT-ST seems about it. Cant see how it will be competitive but it does look like fun if you do not mind removing your minis by the handful.

Other than cheap acts (which is not really a difficult thing to get in Rebels anyway) I am not sure why one would take Ewoks at all though to be honest.

Ah, just noticed that the AT-ST, C3PO, and Logray cards can't be taken as Rebel mercs. Also the unique command cards. I guess there's reasons, though definitely the kind I want to see people put on the table before I buy anything. The Ewoks themselves seem fine though. Very cheap wounds that do a good deal of work in melee.

Be surprised if they didn't add some more options in down the line; as much as the Battleforces are supposed to be focused, thematic rosters rather than strictly competitive (emphasis on the 'supposed to be'), Bright Tree and Shadow Collective in particular feel like they're each a handful of options shy of being interesting, varied lists. Imperial Remnants already has at least 2 extra potential options from Mando Season 3 (plus another potential Gideon version or upgrade).

I'd love to see a proper Mandalorian battleforce, be that Deathwatch/Children of the Watch combined from the Mando series or pre-Empire Mandalore. Bo Katan and Nite Owls could feasibly be in basically every faction except Empire as Mercenaries or something. Despite the points reductions, none of the squads quite do enough to justify taking them over similar things in their brackets. A battleforce might mitigate that somewhat if it had extra upgrades or directly applicable command cards.

Screw triple AT-ST... six squads of Scout Troopers is the dream list for me.

Triple AT-ST is absolutely a slew list though, comes to around 600 points for three AT-STs moderately equipped. Only leaves you 200 points to get anything that can even interact with the objectives.

Considering it's 190 points just to take the compulsory Commander/Core/Special Forces units in this battleforce...

I managed to sneak an extra stormtrooper squad in for an 8 Activation list but that was with the Scouts having no upgrades and the 2 storms only having repair droids.

As much as triple chicken-walkers is the only real selling point of this list, it's incredibly one-dimensional and probably not very competitive, even if one of them can pop up nearly anywhere on the table.

This battle force without the AT-STs still seems relatively competitive:

800/800 (12 activations)
Imperial Officer (Electrobinoculars)
2Ă— Stormtroopers (T-21 Stormtrooper, Stormtrooper Specialist, Recon Intel)
6Ă— Scout Troopers (Offensive Push, Targeting Scopes)
3Ă— 74-Z Speeder Bikes (HQ Uplink)

The generic 1 pip is insane because it makes 74-Z Speeder Bike squads have a 1/3 chance of auto killing each mini in a trooper unit when they use their Compulsory Move to displace them, and still be able to fire afterwards.

The 1 pip doesn't care how the bikes got their face up order token, because while it only assigns one order token, all vehicles with a face up order token gain the ability.

6 Squads of Scout Troopers ALL using Scout 3, and bikes with Scout 2 from the battle force is going to heavily skew objective play for honestly ALL the objectives.

Having 9 activations almost halfways across the board before the game begins is going to put any player on the back foot in Key Positions, Breakthrough, Bombing Run, Payload, and so on.

That much scout moves means that most things will be within range 2 on Hemmed In and Disarray isn't a bad deployment for that many units with Scout moves.

Those Range Trooper designs were the best part of Solo. I remember many years ago an FFG employee said they planned to redo all the units in HIPS during an interview, and I said, "You sure about that? You sure about that?" Nice they are updating the line a little bit with new Stormtroopers, but I don't know that it's very tempting to rebuy units for this game. We aren't talking correct scale Space Marines here.

I figured with Shatterpoint they'd drop Legion like a hot potato.

I'll take the Range Troopers please. I've been painting my troopers as 501st Vader's Legion with Mustafar basing, and I'll have to get a bit creative with these guys - but I just love the costume for some reason.

I don't think it's really about re-buying them to be honest but about being able to keep manufacturing core stuff without maintaining the old inferior process, and about attracting new people. I don't know that remaking them all into HIPS is about forcing us to rebuy them, I was merely speaking to the financial viability of doing the process. When those new Legion kits dropped people snapped them up, and probably most of the sales that will ever happen for any particular unit box happened in the first three months it was available (not everybody will believe that, which is fine). To then go through the somewhat costly process of completely remaking the molds for all of them, when most people who play the game aren't extremely likely to buy more just didn't make it sound viable. FFG was likely going to be paying twice to get 110% of the sales they would have got making them once. When of course they could be spending that budget to make Ewoks and Commandos and such.

A lot of people have avoided Legion due to the soft plastics on the GCW factions, it doesn't hurt AMG at all to redo the Corps and early Special Forces slot units into hard plastic if it finally gets the people to start playing who have been avoiding it so far.

Likely more beneficial to condense down the type of mold and materials required to make their minis, are both the PVC and hard plastic coming from the same factory? If not, than this is going to be easier for them in the long run.

I'm in the presumably rare position that I don't even have to think about buying a box of plastic Stormtroopers. I only have two painted PVC squads. One assembled by the book, the other one with arm swaps so I get differently posed models. Without extensive conversion that's as much as I'll get out of the old kit. And let's face it, the early models don't have particularly great poses to begin with. Adding the new squad to maintain variation in my squads makes it instantly appealing to me.

The kit might not sell in bulk to many existing players, but I could see that factoring into people's decision to add a box to their collection.

The HIPs version of things like the Stormtroopers and the basic Rebel Troopers will likely have all the upgrade options in a single box rather than as a separate pack. Also wouldn't be surprised if they added some new ones in. There'll also be a lot more customization within a single Rebel box in particular; they said those will have a lot of options in terms of heads and weapons.

Only the Pathfinders set is actually an existing Rebel unit, the other (with the dual-pistols) is a new unit; Rebel Saboteurs, based loosely on Andor style civilian-infiltrators.

Those HIPs revisions aren't due until about 2025 apparently so the crappy soft-plastics have some lifespan left. Personally I'm of a similar opinion; I'll actually bite the bullet and more than willingly get the HIPs versions of Stormtroopers and the like just because I'll get much more enjoyment out of having better models and more natural customization.

From I recall of the panel they revealed these in, is that the generic Jedi can go in ARF troopers or in ARC troopers.

Funny you mention that about CIS, the CIS players I know has been wanting Crab droids so badly.

That final match of Worlds was a nail biter, Ollie played well and got some good assistance from the dice when he needed it. Love it when such a big match ends up being so close like that.

I agree, the current Grievous sculpt isn't bad at all. They mentioned that some of these minis were sculpted by people not normally on their sculpting team (some were from the engineering team) and I think this Grievous is one of them.

This one doesn't seem to he a huge improvement over the previous one, but I loved the excitement in the panel about when they were naming who did some of these newer sculpts.

The colors really only make sense for that game due to making it easier to determine who was who when issuing commands in Republic Commando, it is why they also went with different voices for each one. The limitations of the original Xbox made them have to use colors and sounds for the Commanods to assist the player.

The Republic Commandos box comes with the unit card to make Delta Squad from Republic Commando, or the generic Commandos squad.

I've been waiting forever for Crab droids..... and it's the CW version not the far more intimidating Movie version. They went with the cartoony one meant to look like an actual crab, rather than the movie version meant to be an actually intimidating piece of hardware.

Indeed! I saw that in the behind the scenes coverage for the game around the time it came out. I just wished that I had the option of making them the "default" white colors too in that game on xbox (no idea if a PC option or mod made that possible). My pleasure in seeing the OG white ones available doesn't mean I don't want others to miss out on playing their preferred versions though.

Also we have Andor now which shows the Empire to use troops with shields for crowd control, albeit army boyos instead of Stormtroopers. But the practice and equipment are certainly well enough established at this point.

The real issue with this release is that we don't get civilians to beat down. Where's my angry mob?

I'd have said that the Rebel Sleeper Cells are the angry mob (or at least the ones inciting one).

A version of the Imperial Riot Troopers have appeared in quite a few different media over the years; Jedi Survivor being the most recent, albeit they were wearing a variant of the Scout Trooper armour. These ones are pretty similar other than the helmets. I really like them. Have to think Republic will get their version down the line (maybe even with the 'Hound-Troopers'!) and Commander Fox.

Yeah, I think they're just a little too paramilitary for me. Guns, action poses, trench coats like it's the 90s all over again... one of those guys has a tactical wall, doesn't he?

They're nice for what they are, but I'd just like to have some civilians prior to the "AK-47s for everyone!" stage.

Not sure how much less paramilitary they can make a unit until you might as well just run Ewoks though.

Don't really see a point in making a slightly worse Rebel Trooper or Fleet Trooper unit since that would heavily bloat the Rebel Corps options.

Edit. Unless you are just talking about aesthetics now that I realize it. I can imagine the Sleeper Cell box will be pretty easy to kit bash with the redone Rebel Corps options in hard plastic coking out next year if you wanted to tone down their aesthetic a bit.

Although with how similar most Rebels units tends to look, I can see why they went with the action poses so that they can be easily identified.

Yep, my concern is aesthetics. My Imperials are all uniformed and there's a lot of trooper variety there. I have a Fleet Trooper themed Rebel army and will eventually have a similarly uniform cold weather gear army once I get around to assembling and painting the Echo Base models. What I'm missing is the well meaning but not very well equipped amateur revolutionaries that are mostly civilian in appearance. I'd like to have something like that in my collection. Currently that's a lot of conversion work, and I wouldn't mind if AMG made my life a little easier.

Gotcha, I wonder how well the new Rebels kits will scale to the Stargrave plastics.

If they are relatively close it seems like it would be an easy way to make less "action posed" Rebel civilians or dock workers. The arms on the new Sleeper Cell minis are likely attached at the shoulder, so would be a relatively easy swap. The multiple head options on the new Rebels kits would make it easy to pop them onto the plastic Stargrave bodies.

If Stargrave models are the same as Frostgrave, they'll be pretty short. Like 28mm compared to 35mm short. But kind of wide due to the sculpting style. Not sure that's a good source.

Multiple head options are a nice way to get some variety, though. I've already reserved some from the swoop bike kit to go on my Rebels. Whenever I get around to it anyway...

New edition in all but name effectively. Inevitable reactionary meltdown ensuing but suspect it will die down once folks actually play through the new mechanics. The core of the game is still the same, missions, deployment and scoring having an overhaul was arguably needed anyway and it's not like there's been a huge shift in what the objectives are, just how they're laid out. I'll miss the novelty of things like bombing run and hostages but they could get worked back in down the line. Really like the 1000pts and agree with their reasoning on it; that little bit extra breathing room to take a fun character or tanks or something that wasn't necessarily seeing much table time.

I was genuinely surprised at how open and honest they were about that in the article. I have a decent amount of Empire (I think, not looked at the points for a while) all built but I still haven't played. There is a fair bit of interest in this 1.5(2.0) version so fingers crossed!

For me this will come down to availability of cards. If they're plentiful and not expensive I will throw some effort behind trying to get local people playing again, if they are hard to find or pricey then I think it'll probably kill the game for me.

I hope this spirit is carried over to Crisis Protocol, as stuff like Tactics Cards are just rules bloat that set a ridiculous barrier to entry for newer players. MCP with fresh new core missions, and no tactics cards would be nearly perfect IMO.

Hey, this also squashes fears that AMG wouldn't take Legion seriously, and it would follow X-wing/Armada.

Tactics cards are designed to rotate out. They already did it once with a pack that sold everything that remained legal. The issue is just that they don't keep these packs in circulation for very long.

They said that everything will be print and play but didn't mention whether this includes the new battle deck stuff, here is hoping!

Also happy to see EXD getting a slight nerf by only allowing 2* BXs!

Under two hours now until the roadmap is shown, should be good!

My only gripe so far is that I just finished painting all of the mission models and now they are no longer useable...

Legion Roadmap is later today so there may be some information on physical card packs to transition over. Probably essential given they're the core mission mechanic and they could do with also providing an official 'half range' tool that's been introduced. Credit to them for just dropping all the immediate changes online as downloads straight after announcing them but it's going to be rough if we have to wait for the (presumed) new starter sets to get hold of essential kit.

Yes but some units are usable outside of those battle forces, like the Pykes, who currently have no updates into the new system. ISF is also something that doesn't have an update and isn't showing a "no longer usable" in the errata doc.

Saves them on art assets for these things, I guess. It also doesn't leave a whole lot of confidence in the product moving forward if not everything is being presented with a carry forward front.

All of the existing cards are going to be updated by the time they get a physical release next year; the ones that got changed immediately with the Print & Play were those they either felt needed a more immediate update or were made redundant with the changes to the core rules (also why some upgrades have been removed from the game). Some stuff won't actually change; just updated to the new card format but there are more rules/points alterations to come.

Shadow Collective will presumably get some more substantive balance updates down the road (Maul dropped in points at least this round). With their availability in other factions, I don't know if they'll give the Pykes/Black Suns the double unit size option. Black Suns might get a bit ridiculous. Collective were always envisioned as a fairly limited Battleforce rather than a full Faction so they're never going to have a huge amount of options but there does seem to be a fair consensus that they need something adding. Savage Opress seems an obvious one and there's always going to be more Bounty Hunters that would make sense in terms of timeline to be available. Plus Pre-Visla and Bo and her Nite Owls were nominally part of the Collective (albeit briefly). In terms of non-character units though, there's not a huge amount of on-screen presence. Crimson Dawn do show up in Clone Wars and there's always the potential for some sort of generic pirate squad (if and when they do Hondo). There's a Mandalorian Speeder vehicle with a gun mount that they could look at (Maul's Mando's use it in Clone Wars). Technically Jabba and the Hutt families are involved as well but unlikely to have a major battlefield presence.

I have to say, I hate what they did with the crab droid, by far my favorite droid. They chose the worst version of the design, the specifically 4-legged version of the CW design, and they ignored it's most iconic feature! the crab droid can suck up dirt and mud into it's claws and spit it back out at opponents, which is where it's nickname of "mudrakers" comes from. Yet, it's completely absent from the unit. I'll probably still use it as a unit, as what are basically short-range spider droids is exactly what I need, but it's incredibly frustrating.

As one of the countless kids/teens who saw the Prequels in theatres and immediately dragged their parents to a toystore to try and wheedle a six week advance on our pocket money to buy as many as we could: hah, lol, roflma, etc. You have it entirely backwards man, the cartoon wouldn't exist if the movies hadn't been such a phenomenon - and at the time the most merchandised movies ever made, to the point it was one of the main complaints a lot of older fans had - among younger audiences who then went out and spent a fortune of their parents money on toys and merch. For all their flaws the Prequels managed to replicate the most important aspect of the OT as far as franchise longevity is concerned: it hooked a generation of kids, and the kids who grew up to be nerds haven't stopped spending.

Heck, quite a few CW fans hated the CGI series at first, either because they were Genndy fans or because Ahsoka was an annoying brat stereotype for the first while until they switched up their approach and people warmed up to her. Don't get me wrong the series did a lot of heavy lifting narratively and it definitely elevated the story of the Clones(assuming you like the chip plot) and Anakin, but I agree with the other dude; if a design exists both on-screen and in the cartoon, the screen version should be used.

EDIT: As to the model reveals, that Rebel Cell gives me SWG flashbacks - the top left guy is literally my old Rifleman hunter character, all he needs is a slightly more garishly green camo pattern on the duster and a Dewback to ride. Mad. In general I think the Rebels benefit most from hard plastic, most of the GAR and Imperial units don't seem that big an improvement although it'll be nicer material to work with for new players which is great. All the hero characters are improved though. Overall great stuff, shame it'll take two years or so to all come out.

I'd seen the VHS versions but really I was too young to appreciate them properly, so the theatrical SE releases are the version that's burned into my brain. Adywan's fanedits are well worth a look if you haven't seen them - they don't try to restore the nigh-mythical "real" OT, but they do pare back some of Lucas' more egregious excesses and even fix a few technical things the SEs missed. His RotJ rework was shaping up to be truly epic, he apparently even shot new footage to restore the cut B-Wing sequences from the Endor fleet battle, hopefully he recovers from his heart problems soon and can finish it up.

I was momentarily excited by the Riot Trooper thing until I realised it's the guys that appear in R1 for about 30 seconds and get beaten to a pulp by an unarmoured smol lady and not the black armoured guys from Andor, who could have been easily repainted as Army.

It took until this year to get Republic Commandos and they've acknowledged people have been after Gungans for a while. My theory is they know how much people want Imperial Army- I mean, 'Mud Troopers' and just want to spread the more fanservicey kits over a wider period.

I'm not sure Prequel toys would even be a thing without those cartoons. They are the power behind the Star Wars throne.

Well I really meant the toys we're getting now, Garbage Pail Kids were a big toy phenomenon too in their time. Since I was in college when the Prequels came out, I have probably been privy to more conversations concerning the Prequels' popularity in merchandising, and as such, am aware that they're a pretty colossal flop. Or to put it in terms that any normie can understand, ten years after the prequels came out when you went on Amazon to find Star Wars tchotchkes it was all Chewie oven mitts, Darth Vader toasters, and Princess Leia shirts. The Prequels had no merchandising presence. And no, the toy market was no exception by then either. So in my mind, from what I saw, in all likelihood the fact is: no cartoons, no toys.

LunarSol wrote:The prequels were always for kids. Somehow it surprises us old fans that there's somehow a batch of superfans for them 20 years later.

Kids missed the plotting/pacing issues, the same way I did when watching Willow, and they are at the very least very inventive films. With lots of alien creatures, super powered heroes, and wars to fight. And despite not being critically well reviewed (by critics or audiences), they still had that very necessary ingredient of massive hype, adults took these movies very seriously as products, and the marketing/media presence was gigantic. I think kids responded to that very deeply, it wasn't how many stars adults gave them out of ten, it was with how much respect they treated them with, and even though they didn't give them many stars, they were a big deal. At least to a niche group of kids who can, theoretically at least, sustain a miniature wargame.

The Empire starter box looks enticing. I really like Vader's pose and I want the new Stormtroopers.

A nice round up of everything we know so far about the new edition roll out.

I wonder if the author realizes that some of us have a visceral hatred of Shick? He has had at least a finger in the trashing of warmachine and the deaths of Armada and Xwing. I just want him to move on to a different industry that I has nothing to do with my interests, like golf or event planning.

And let's be honest here, they did want to do the same with Legion... they simply couldn't

Yeah the Legion relaunch feels like a very grudging "our backers won't let us kill this outright so we're going to drag our heels as much as possible" situation. Their handling of this "new edition" would be staggeringly bad and unprofessional even for a small indie, but this is the star wars license!

Still slightly better than the treatment x wing and armada got.

Genuinely curious about why someone would have this sentiment given there's clearly a significant amount of work going into the Legion refresh, regardless of individual perceptions of the quality of that work?

Announcing a new edition of the game with new branding but no firm dates or timescales or even confirmation of what products there'll be, leaving the whole game in limbo for a year with only print at home rules and not reprinting essential you its and components. Basically doing everything contractually possible to deter people from playing it

That and for the two years prior to the botched release of a new edition, they did almost nothing with the game. Really only released product (with tons of errors like Crit to Block on the Swoop Bike card) that was already in the pipeline from FFG, barely bothered with balance adjustments, and the stuff they DID release that were their own products were almost all entertainingly broken (Clone Commandos, Dark Troopers).

The lack of availability of a lot of kits has undoubtedly been an issue, though that's arguably a wider thing with Asmodee's production capacity and the logistics in the industry generally; to be honest I can appreciate that they're not going to make huge volumes of the existing stuff when it's either getting replaced by a new kit or, at the very least, re-branded with new cards etc. Some sets have also had structural changes to the product to give a more complete box in terms of what's available for the unit (Geonosians being the prime example).

Print at home for that extended period is a frustration and I imagine plenty of existing players have paused actively engaging with the game until everything came out physically. It's arguably somewhat healthier to announce it with digital versions and some scope for correction if needed (prior to print), rather than just dropping it overnight and invalidating a lot of existing content (with no recourse to do errata/alterations based on feedback).

I'd also push back on there not being firm(ish) dates and timescales. When they announced the rework, they said that there would be another round of updates in April before the print versions of all the new kit came out in June/July which appears to be what's going to happen.

Ultimately, I don't believe there's an ideal way to transition to a new edition, especially with wholesale rebranding/repackaging of every product in the range and, whilst their approach has thrown up plenty of issues and potentially dampened enthusiasm for the game in the short to medium term, I struggle to see how it speaks to a lack of desire to continue the game going forward given the sheer amount of resources that the transition itself will have necessitated; particularly in terms of reworking and replacing such a significant amount of the existing model range in (expensive to set up) hard plastic production.

FFG had a very specific game design style. Trying to drop it on another studio without the personnel behind that style wasn't ever going to make fans of that style happy. Honestly with how far ahead hips production has to be, I'm not sure Asmodee even wanted AMG to do anything other than fake a smile and get the stuff in the pipeline out the door. Honestly they were already treating X-Wing and Armada like that when they were still under FFG.

I honestly wish they had given it to CMON. While they have their issues, they at least know how to run a full-bore wargame. All AMG had done was crisis protocol and it shows IMO.

I can't laugh any harder at this.

CMON knows how to run a full-bore wargame? That's news to anyone who actually plays one of their games.
