I have tried several times to do power weapon effects and never quite managed it. Does anyone have a link to a tutorial that might help me?

Errr, thanks Hazzer... not quite sure if you're being sarcastic, but I'll assume not! I did indeed create a homebrew purely for this thread, but that tends to be the way my mind functions, I do some research based on something I've seen or a piece in my collection, then I just let my mind wander and when it gets back I write a load of fluff.

The head is not yet firmly attached, haven't decided exactly where I want it. I like the eyes looking out the corner, but it doesn't really suit the angle the bolter is at, so maybe he was aiming, but is now checking behind him, like he suddenly heard something. Not sure.







The axe is a bit of a problem. I followed a tutorial I found on making less cartoony power blades - using watered down blue and watered down white and mixing them, but I'm not sure it went well. Thoughts?

The wheeled guy got dumped back into 'da surjary' due to me being unable to get the marine pad to fit where I wanted, he'll eventually re-surface back with some other servo-grots. During the process of scrapping him I came up with a couple of other ideas, but this is the main alternative so far:



There's a faint possibility a third variation may appear, if neither of those is really grabbing you yet

an00bis - much happier with most of yours now I'v put some colour on the wapons, however I have managed to lose his head I forgot it was only lightly blu-tacced in place and it fell off whilst I was playing with the weapons. Onto the floor and straight into the Carpet Level Workroom Black Hole...

WM - the 2 vets are complaining to me that their armour is a loose fit and needs securing, whilst the scout is making a fuss over his non-existent colour scheme.

Base coat mostly slapped on (elegantly) so either I had productive time or its early 2012, hard to keep track of time every now and then.
This is following my army paint scheme so if its not what you want/need just let me know and Ill strip it off and start over but I think it is what you were looking for.
BTW, I like the black parts.

Really like the scheme 1-i, every captain should have his own colours and I do enjoy painting bubonic brown.

Also good work at speeding up time, it's good to get those pesky years out of the way!

anyway i got one unassembled guy and 5 Marines with just chainswords and pistols with no shoulders and packs, can redo arms since they got blood angels icons, good with most colors to paint so most chapters are not an issue, so if if anyone is interested in them im willing to trade equal to pretty much anything, i can re build them into anything i can with my bitz supply, just let me know what you prefer, and i have no real huge projects so i can paint something pretty fast and started almost immediately, so let me know if anyones interested

Ah, it's no problem! I find my new soldiers seem to be a labour of love too! Considering I am building an army of Techmarines (I'm in love with building machinery and harnesses )

Its a bolter scope cut into two parts, a piece of paper-clip, wires from an old doom siren for a chaos vehicle, and a tank from a biker multimelta

Even more impressive! Harlequins kiss is a wrist mounted gun from way before all the marines started wearing them (those space marines are so behind the times with their fads ) which Eldar Harlequins had. The fact you've used a piece of paparclip and trimmed down the piece of plastic to fit it so perfectly is testament to your skill (or my blindness, but that isn't so complimentary to you!)

I looked it up on lexicanum...
It seemed so brutal...

@Polyd8 - started work on a conversion beamer based on a missile launcher. No pictures yet, but it might need a 40mm base to stop it from falling over. Is the MotF you're doing for me stable on the 25mm base?

@1-i - work is moving along on the Vanguard Vet, got some pics, but haven't had time to upload them yet. I think he is going to look pretty darn sweet.

Hey Hazzer, if you have problems taking photos it is a good idea to place the camera on a flat surface and set a timer to take the photo a few seconds after you press the button. Your photos are coming out so blurry that it's close to impossible to see anything.

If the problem is focus then you need to get an auto focussing camera.

@HAZZER That actually could be a rather good servitor, since i need 4 of them too!

@ ployd8 It wasent ment to be a servitor but that helps alot for me to find a head for that sepicific character.And what to do for the paint job!

I think I'll throw my hat into the ring on this one because this seems really awesome. I mostly paint Ultramarines and Blood Angels. The Blood Angels were for a friend of mine so no pics of them, sorry. I'm, obviously, willing to paint Ultras but I've been really wanting to try out an Imperial Fist or a White Consul (I'll try my hand at anything though). If anyone is interested in swapping go ahead and let me know.

A note on the photos:
This is my first try at taking photos and posting them here on Dakka so I'm hoping they came out decently. The lighting in the tactical marine photo seems a bit screwy but maybe it's just me. Also a big thumbs up to Scarab for his tutorial on photographing models, it was hugely useful.

Hey andain841, bearing in mind that your a newbie (like me I only joined a few months ago) good pics how I take tham with 2-3 bits of A4 paper.Put the guy that your going to photograph in the middle zoom in take a pic upload it on to your computer edit then upload on to dakka.Also wanta swap (I collect ultramarines too) So swap a ultramarine for a ultramarine so we can see each others different styels of painting.(pics of my guys ae just above your post!). Winging his way to Battle Brother Lucifer: Techmarine Perrault

Perrault has always been smarter than most of his battle brothers, but was quiet and introspective in his intelligence. Happier with technology than his peers, he was sent to Mars shortly after being granted the Black Carapace to learn the arts of the technological ways. Upon returning to the chapter the Masters of the Forge gathered and spoke long with him, gaging whether he would be best suited to leading his peers, focussing on artillery or dealing with the great tanks of the order. Very quickly he was placed in command of the servitors manning the support arsenal of the chapter, where he has faithfully served, taking to battle only alongside the great predators and whirlwinds of the chapter, to buoy up the flagging spirits of the machines and keep them working long after other techmarines would have given up.

Himly earned his stripes on a desert world on the fringes of Obscurus in battle with a splinter fleet of Tyranids, dubbed 'Bastille' by the Chapter. Already a sergeant of an assault marine squad, he was able to stem the tide of monstrous creatures while a community of tech priests gathered very important machinary before leaving the world to die. The only Space Marine survivor of the venture, before the battle barges and strike cruisers arrived to destroy the space borne menace, Himly was inducted into the veterans at the behest of the senior Tech priest, who saw in Himly a devotee of the Omnissiah and a potent close combat warrior. Since then he has spent a great deal of time in remote corners, often travelling alone and aiding other chapters in the fight against xenos and heresy, as every Space Marine could wish.

Polyd8: The conversion beamer looks pretty cool I think. Pictures at some point soon.

BG that is amazing. Currently Im too tired to use better words or go into greater detail about how amazing.

So, some of you might be wondering how I got so many GMS marines (think I'm up to 12 or 13 now). Well two things... first, get behind on your trades (I don't recommend that). Second though is I trade all kinds of things for GMS marines. Old figures, bits, you name it. Which brings me to my current picture. DarthLakey is in need of some Mantis Warrior pads for a squad he's making, so I'm trading him for a Inquisitional marine for my army. Built this guy out of so many bits just like usual. Did some fooling around with a heat gun on the arms to get the pose I wanted & dressed him up with grenades and a purity seal, not to mention the fancy bolter. He's also got a banded tech shoulder pad from Chapterhouse. I've had several of these for a while now and have just been dying to try them out on something. This seemed like the perfect figure for the job. So, I'll be passing this on the Darth to paint in whatever colors he'd like. Hope he enjoys the painting as much as I'll enjoy adding it to my second inquisitional squad!

I would prime, but as I mentioned I'm about 4 trades behind. Let me get caught up and I'll be back in the market. Only reason I'm swapping with Darth is that he's accepting bits in liu of a painted model (which would just put me farther behind).

@Gitsplitta - thanks very much, glad you like. I really go all out on these swapped marines, going to have to go back over my own marines with some of the things I've learned.

@prime - cheers, I love his dynamic pose. Only annoyance was the shoulder pad on the fist has thrown off the line of the backpack, it is skewed slightly away from straight up.

@1-i - especially glad you like, since you have to look at him! I'm shipping on Saturday morning (only time I can get to the post office).

@Hazzer - yes, both marines have homes, one for Battle Brother Lucifer, the other for 1-i.

Like the last two Im looking for a CC type marine, doesnt matter the weapons (chainsword and pistol are perfectly fine) and whatever paint scheme you got, unless told otherwise Ill paint this one like all the others ive done but I can be persuaded into a different pattern.

I havent done a great marine swap before, and I have been away from painting for far too long, so I thought this could be a fun way to get the painting juju back again.

If anyone is interested in swapping, that would be cool. I have a massive SW army, which has all been knocked back to base coat to begin painting.

So let me know what you want to swap (scout, bloodclaw, greyhunter sky claw etc) what kinda weapons layout whether you want missing pads, blank bases... that would be great. It will not be to GD standard, but I'll knock my pan in to give you the best that i can.

All Im looking for is any closecombat marines, and SW looks like a fine fit for my mishmash squad. Paint scheme I think should be your standard SW unless you want to try something else Im ok as long as I dont paint it.

Whatever is cool with you.... do you want a foot slogger or a sky claw? do you need power weapons or spec weapons?

Foot slog and the squad has plenty of special weapons currently but I wont stop you from adding any but bolt pistol and chainsword is perfectly fine.

Nah use your scheme, I just looked and it is really nice, I like the purples, its a colour i never use, so to see it in my army would give a nice focal point. I like Gitsplittas idea of having an inquisitorial squad, and as I am theming my army on the 1st Armageddon war, it would seem apt, considering all the daemonic nastiness and then the purges which later occurred.

I will leave it to you to decide the type of marine you would like to build and paint, but not a heavy weapon trooper as they are long fangs in my force. Maybe a tactical marine or assault marine without a backpack would be cool. I am just excited to be trading as it give me a focus.

@ Prototype_X: Alright here is a very raw wip for your Big Shoota Boy. This we pretty much be the pose. Will pin and fill in gaps with green stuff. Still have to get rid of the mold lines and drill out the barrels. Gonna use a ork head that has his mouth open to make it look like he is yelling and throwing lead down range. Gonna toss the back pack with the grot on the back once I find it. But this is what I have got going for ya so far.

I'd love to say I sculpted the Solar Lion, but he's a collection of bits, essentially: White Lion Chariot bits for various lions, Empire Outrider head (I think), commander torso and legs, sanguinary dagger, angelus bolt gun left arm, termie lightning claw right arm, and a lion headed cloak out of my bits box, origin unknown. Oh, and a Khorne sigil and dagger out the box as well.

Hope I can do him justice with a lick o' paint...

Making progress on my long-standing trade with whalemusic360... we're swapping plasma cannoneers.

Base is done... I didn't quite have the same grey that WM uses on his bases, so I made my best mix... but the base can easily be re-ringed in the proper color.



And I have a green marine. (actually he's not quite this yellow)... issue with my camera.



Next comes the rather dull job of lining everything with Thraka Green, but after that things get interesting again.

Ah heck, just post the termie pics!

The point of the pics isn't necessarily to show what you want to trade, it's just to show off what you can do. That way when you work out a trade, you and the other person can custom make marines for each other so you each get exactly what you want or need.

Ummm my bits box

I believe that it is one of the top round hatches to a LRC. I took a combat shield, cut out the hand that is holding it, cut it down to fit onto the LRC hatch, glued it on, then cleaned up the kitbash a little, glued on a bolter hand and VOILA!

Reminds me of a man hole cover shield ala TMNT, which is a good thing. I also now have the stupid "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" song stuck in my head, so thanks for that.

Looked vaguely Tauesque... anyway... looks great Luke, no matter the source.

I've just finished painting up the black and white marine of the Boreal Templars. But as they are ice related, they've been done in a blue/grey wash, which brings out an arctic feel i think, but i'd be happy to paint them without the wash, I'll probably upload the photos this evening.

@cypher- Thanks. As far as the blue it may be the lighting or the fact that my phone likes to mess with my pictures.

Finally painted my Boreal Templars marine, I must apologise for the dodgy Templar logo on the shoulder, I decided that i just wanted to finish the guy as he is just a pilot for the colour scheme. This one has a grey/blue (9:1) wash, but if wanted i could leave unwashed for a cleaner black/white distinction, but i decided the wash looked good for an arctic theme.

Shado is the white supposed to be white or that kind of pale teal?

is started off white, but the grey/blue wash has sorta changed it. But i think the final effect makes it look more arcticy Why?

My marine I've been working for Polyd8.

@Shado: personally I think cleaner colors and using the wash to pick out shadows only would give it a more ice feel. Take a look at IceAngel's pictures to see what I mean.

Have you ever seen on say the Discovery channel, pictures or views of inside an ice cave? The way the ice forms from rushing water goes from a deep blue to a stark white at the points. If you could imitate that going from deep blue shadow to stark white armor plates I think you would achieve your goal better than washing the whole figure. That's just my opinion though. If you achieved what you wanted from the wash then my opinion doesn't matter.

@cypher, i understand the point you're making, i think i'll need to thin out the wash, and using a little less as well as wiping it off of the armour plates should add to that effect. what d'ya reckon?

I would more just apply the washes to areas where dark shadow would be, then line those with Space Wolves Grey faded (highlighted?) into Skull White. I think that would turn out wonderfully.

Sounds like a plan, once i've finished the IG gue'vesa i'm working on, i'll have a go at the marines again, but that probs won't be for a couple of months :/

Nice marine Ice... *almost* as good as the one you made for me! ;-)

I have a Spacemarine thunderfire cannon and a the techmarine that goes along with it. I converted my army into blood angels and i can no longer use him! If anyone is interested let me know then i can post picture of its condition.

Christop what would you expect as a trade? Just for anyone wondering (myself included).

I would like anything blood angels really. I would be even up for a single Hq model. Armor would be nice too, drop pods, tanks, land speeders anything really other then basic troops, i have too many of those.


Here it is, the base coat was a bit thick so i ended up cleaning it with some goof off and the marine came out very clean.

Okay folks. First attempt at this GMS. I am doing a scout in exchange for an Inquisitorial Kill Team member.

This is very rough just now, all limbs pinned etc so things can get changed about.

I need to lower the cloak, and do some GS work, including extra fur on the shoulders and cloak. Maybe make some old style shoulder pads. Also tried 2 different positions for the sword, however I am considering swapping the hand weapons over.

Anybody know where I can get more of the classic Space Marine Scout Backpacks????? I love them and could use a few more.

Hey Killamop, Whalemusic put the descriptor of what this is about at the top of page 1.

It doesnt have to be marines though, I have seen orks done too, actually quite a few orks.

Its really a way of meeting other gamers and sharing your modelling skills with them. They build you a model and paint it to the best of their abilities, in turn you build them a model and paint it to the best of your skills. Then you swap.

For me its a motivator to try new techniques and push the envelope of my modelling and painting, plus I get to meet lots of cool people too.

Wanted to show off a bit of BLACKHAND's work. His Sabre Legion was the first thing that really made me realize his sculpting genius. By comparison, I was as involved in his blog every bit as much as some of you are involved in mine.

This little diorama, his part of our trade... depicts me as the Sabre Legion soldier, leading to young scouts (my boys) in a training run. The amazing thing is that we were just beginning to get to know each other at the point when he conceived and built this models, yet it is so perceptive in bringing my relationship with my boys into focus.

Really remarkable... Thanks my friend! I hope you'll enjoy what I'm planning on making for you as much as I enjoy having this.

@Prototype_X, I wasn;'t planning to, it was gonna stay that white/blue colour, but I could paint it if you so required (while you can't see it all, it's all white, it isn't white/black). What d'you think about the tidied up white marine? still interesting in trading? How's the marine you're painting coming along?

@ 1-i, no worries I have something lined up for you too, just trying to set the arm positions and figure a way to put a nice wrap around the axe handle (the bit you hold it by, i never know what it is called). I have taken a bit of a break from the hobby, all been a bit much recently.

Received the Black Templar's captain from 1-i - waiting to hear if my marine has arrived with him.

BBL received my marine, waiting on his.

Am part way through building the Master of the Forge for polyd8 (will pick it up again soon I promise!)

Have base coated the marine for andain841 and will start this alongside polyd8's.

Once he is done I have a Librarian Deathwatch member and a bunch of Deathwatch marines I want to do for swaps with others. But I want to take it slow at the moment

I'm in quite the Warhammer slump, but I should be back to normal by Tuesday.

I too have been in something of a hobby slump. Must be the miserable weather in New York this whole month. BG I'm underway on your Imperial Fist and I'll hopefully have it done soonish. With the holiday this weekend my painting time has been a bit limited. I do have a work in progress photo but it's basically just a body and arms so it's not all that useful. I'll post it below just for the heck of it.

I'm not sure I'm sold on the white chest eagle so I'm thinking of changing it to red. My initial thought was to go with 5th company (that would be black shoulder pad rims) but I get the impression he may well end up looking like a bumble bee. Thoughts anyone?

Edit: The actual model is not quite this bright (I'm still getting used to taking proper photos) and it still needs highlighting etc.

Nice painting... contrast and detail between black and yellow are excellent. I think black would look fine. White better maybe so it ties in with the eagle (don't know what the chapter colors are though).

@raith its not coming along very well actually, i decided to start a new army (doom legion) so the model to show is also the test. Anyone know how to highlight boltgun mental? its not quite working atm.

Drybrush of chainmail, then a further drybrush of mithril silver, finally a badab black wash.

thanks ill try that as soon as i get chainmail.

Drybrushes on metallic colors need to be done with the brush really dry... you're almost rubbing the pigment on rather than brushing it on. Effects can be quite good though.

After the wash, you can edge highlight with the mithril. Only the top edges where the sunlight would catch the edges of the armor. It really helps make the figure "pop" to the eye.

The Leejunary is fantastic, very grotty looking The paint really brings the character out.

The termies have a lovely worn looking patina to them, excellent job.

Well I'm really happy you like your first gms! Only thing I don't like is their freehand blooddrop on pad. Might repaint, they're a bit messy.
