Ha! In terms of plasticard - the Stormboy Nob has very little - and it was very simple - just the wings. Literally cut four strips and overlay them. Run a thin strip down the top and two thin strips down the join side to "neaten", then add rivets - easy! (Compared to the Trukks!)

I guess I should have said it also reminded me of your awesome Trukks indeed...

HAHA, mystery solved! The marine in question is from Kilkrazy and is one of his Dust Devils. Took some sleuthing, but I figured it out.

Latest addition to my Mantis Warrior forces (through the Inquisition of course)... Yggs' Brother Tanaerum of the Achylsian Reavers! (and the incredible letter he sent with him!)

I am very lucky to have received such a beautiful figure in the GMS. Going to be a tough thing to provide equal value in return.

Wow Git, you just managed to make it better than when it left France!!!

I have to admit I was a bit sad to part with it, but I'm now more happy than sad. That's just a plastic toy, after all

The base is kinda special indeed, it really emphasizes his charging pose... I love it!

As for the letter... I actually spent a hard night downloading all sorts of fonts for OpenOffice, which is less intuitive than Word when trying to add fonts, then testing each and everyone of them to find the ones I liked most... And eventually, putting it all into shape as I was coming up with the fluff! The end of the story was a bit influenced by the fact I had promised Gitsplitta to send some unused Chaos chainswords for his MW scythes...

But you all seem to enjoy it, so I guess it was worth it!!!

Thanks for the kind comments, guys...

A had a bloody battle yesterday and I took this pic of some of the marines from the Great Marine Swap that took part. Inigo, Inushi, Evrard, and Walters are in that picture. Brother Aquilum was on the battlefield too but in another unit. Everyone in this picture died except Captain Ruusa (jump pack guy) and the Astral Claw (orange guy). I randomized it and unfortunately Inushi and Walters were the first two to go. I will say though, they killed that entire 9 man warrior unit, some had already died before the picture was taken. They also murdered some gaunts, but that's not much of an achievement.

You'll probably hate me for this post - I tend to dislike random new comments this far into a thread, but how do you participate in this swap? It seems like a great deal of fun and I'd love to make my own contribution.

Must be the day for many of the GMS marines to make their battlefield debut. ISS-alpha took the field today for the first time. Did pretty well, they podded into the necron rear in order to have a go at some warriors hiding behind a monolith. Killed the squad about 2.5 times before a dread joined the fray and they finally destroyed the unit permanently. Then the short squad (4 guys by that time) charged the *other* necron squad hiding behind the monolith and put them to flight causing a phase out! So... I'd say they did pretty well. Here's a pic of the battle ensuing.

The swap is simple, you send a PM to someone that you want to do a swap with. You then agree to swap something, like a marine for a marine, an ork for an ork, or a trukk for a trukk, etc. You then paint your guy to the best of your ability, typically in your own colors and the other person does the same. You then mail your marine to the other person, hence the trade part of the arrangement.

Perfect example, my post above there is a green marine named brother Inushi, in the other battle picture from Gitsplitta just above my post there is a picture with a black armored marine with orange guns. That was my swap with Gitsplitta.

So to recap, Gitsplitta has one of my Ice Angels and I have one of his Mantis Warriors. This is a great thread, I hope you find some people to do some swaps. We could use some fresh names and pictures!

I'll post up pics of your guy so I can be sure you like the marine

This morning I agreed to finally enter the fray by putting together a Red Scorpion sergeant with a power fist and plasma pistol for Gitsplitta in return for one of his awesome Mantis warriors.

there are really no rules or anything, you just offer to swap a marine, and you and the other person figure out exactly what kinda marine, and how to swap it. Nothing really intense about it, it is pretty laid back, and we can vouche for everyone who has done a trade already since i haven't heard of any unsucessful trades yet save when the mailmen decide to send them weeks late hahahahaha.

so if you wanna trade, im down for one!

Hey guys, this is my first time to post on Dakka, I have been a lurker for awhile, and when I found this thread I could not resist chiming in and asking if people are still willing to trade. I am starting a DA army pretty soon and would be willing to paint one up and trade or I could trade Tau as that was my original army. However, I am fairly new to the hobby and am still learning. I am also transitioning from LOTR to 40K, so I don't have a lot of experience but I would put forth my best effort and look for C&C wherever possible to improve. Sorry for the essay, but I felt I needed to clarify. Also if you want pics, I can post some from my LOTR dwarves or Tau, but at the moment I only have a WIP Ezekiel.

At first I wasn't sold on the bug helm, thought they be more like the red scorpion-isk. Not so much the helm , but the eyes, but the more I see this figure and the way you painted the lens, the more I've grown to really like it.

Post by: phantomninja

This is the greatest idea I have come across! I have this marine for trade... I assume this is how it goes.
This was from my previous chapter of SM called the Phantom Panthers. Since then I have been painting Nurgle-y items.

Here is another old marine, this was modeled after the Soul Drinkers book cover. Once again an old paint job.
So is this correct, we show a painted marine and then see who wants it? Or do we show a marine with our current painting skills and they request one done IN THEIR chapters colors?

The Great Marine Swap @ 2011/02/04 11:38:21

Post by: Gitsplitta

The idea is to do a custom painted mini for someone else as they do one for you. This is not intended to be a clearing house for old mini's that you don't need any more. That being said... there's nothing wrong with putting up already painted minis from time to time, I've even done that myself. But the spirit is to push yourself to do something really extraordinary for someone. I think everyone who's participated regularly in the swap has improved their skills markedly over time.

Oh all, due to a fluff reboot my CSM have undergone the Warpcrafters are no more.

They are now the Hawks Imperial.

The fluff in a nutshell is now:
- M36: Homeworld gets sucked into the Storm of the Emperor's Wrath.
- Daemons work their magic on their bodies and minds.
- M40: lull in the Storm, Hawks Imperial launch a crusade.
- The catch: Daemons have played mind tricks on the chapter; they still think they fight for the emperor but everything now looks like a traitor in their eyes so they haphazardly attack planet after planet, imperial or not.

Hilarity ensues!

OK, workshop is dry now so I can start trying to re-organise the place. Appear to have lost the majority of my ork bitz, which is annoying, but whilst looking I did find the bits I had for an00bis. Realised I had been trying to shoehorn a particulaar idea onto the figure, so re-thought and did a bit of work on it. Apologies for the huge delay, graven think I've got enough bits to start on yours too.

Power klaw, boss-pole (or banna), 'eavy armour and shoota-skorcha combi mounted on the tracks as he had no spare hands. Still needs a bionik eye to match his pole icon, and I'd like some glyph plates down the front of the pole. Reading either Nob N'pu (Inpu was ancient egyptian for Anubis) or Marv. And there'll be some wires somewhere too

As you left load-out to me I figured i'd just throw the ball back in your court Shoota -rokkit combi and twin-linked shoota. Used a smaller maget on the second shoota, may change it up, it's okay, but not as solid as the other connections.

thats pretty good green there, i would just pick out the details a bit more now, like the vents between his armor plates, or the imperial eagle which i like painting black and drybrushing white. Then maybe highlight or wash the green armor.

happy to see another person in the game. If you are down to give me a little bit of time ill paint up a bolter marine for you!

Making sure you clean up all the flash (left side of helmet on the detail) and where you take the pieces off the sprue (shoulderpad) will also improve the finished result. Otherwise a nice start!

Before I start putting any paint on this thing, I thought I'd post a picture of the marine I'm doing for Gitsplitta.

Click to get a better view. There are a couple of tiny bits of greenstuff cleanup needed, but it's pretty much ready for undercoating. I really like him; sadly I used up some of the parts that went into him, so I can't do the one for me that I was planning to do at the same time. Never mind hey

Just in case you're wondering, the thing on the back of his powerfist is supposed to be a narthecium type device. If anyone can think of a way to make it look slightly less autopistol and more narthecium, please yell!

The Great Marine Swap @ 2011/02/11 12:42:07

Post by: Artsoldier35

@ Endtransmission: That's one awesome Fig you put together there. As for the Narthecium...maybe add a piece of wire bit to the end to simulate a needle protrusion?

Thanks Gits! Yeah I was going to go with a more traditional looking red with yellow on the pk, but then I decided to use yellow for the highlights on the red and so figured I'd swap out the yellow for a pale green-blue. Figure I'll use it on the pole glyphs too, but the main icon will be getting several more layers of inks and washes.

No need to rush graven Just because I've started to collate pieces, doesn't mean it'll be done soon

Wasn't going to post these, but as I'm replying.....
Slightly blurry, but, you know - mini in one hand, camera in another, tea in a third, on a boat, windy outside (one of those may be a lie)

Tried a slightly different take on the skin. I tend to do my ork's shoulders like this (those that have shoulders that is), adding to the ripped look I feel. So I thopught I'd try and extend it across the rest of the body (but not the head, not even cyborks go for the ripped head look...well, not in that sense anyway ).
Quite pleased with it for now, see how I like it with fresh eyes tomorrow. Debating on a couple of thin glazes flesh and green, to blend it a bit, we'll see.

The Great Marine Swap @ 2011/02/15 07:18:37

Post by: Arakasi

It's certainly different. Can't quite decide if I like it or not - but does give some nice texture to the skin...

Haven't decided myself if I like it yet, pleased it worked almost as well as I hoped, but it'll have to wait till some of the rest has been done up before making a final decision(unless an00bis jumps in with a definite yay or nay). If I decide I don't like it it'll be easy enough to cover with my normal skin, but just wanted to try something a bit different. And I won't be looking at it tonight as I'll be looking at my FW package instead

I'd have to give a positive vote for the skin as well. On another note however, thanks to either the UK Royal Mail or the USPS the marines I produced for both Ramos and Whalemusic have been lost to the warp.

As a result I have produced another miniature for WM.
Without further ado then here is Assault-Captain Kaedes of the Raptors.

C&C welcome as always.

Post by: Yggdrasil

Wow, astonishing mini!!! The pose reminds me of the one I made for Gitsplitta, but since they share some parts in common (legs & right arm), I guess that's normal...

The combination of green & orange is pretty nice, I just have a minor thing to add about the eyes, that might benefit from a small wash to add some depth... Other than this, great job!!!

(also, allow me to sympathize with your loss, that almost happened to Git's mini, I would have been so sad if it had never reached him... Well, another two lost souls to be added to the Wall of Remembrance...)

You don't get to say that they are similar in anyway Yggds, lol. Have you compared the marine I did for Gits with the one you did for him

Its not actually orange but Iyadan with three coats of devlan wash over it. Thanks for the point about the eyes I'll rectify that now. I also noticed I still need to add on the scroll work for purity seals.

As to the loss, it is upsetting but on the plus side my painting and basing has improved considerably since I made those other miniatures for the guys. The result will be better minis for both WM and Ramos.

Looks very cool Lenny, very much looking forward to getting him. Also, record time for getting a mini done, I guess when your mad at the PO (mine or yours) it helps?

I want to ask all you other GMS'ers that I have traded with, if I were to rebase your marines to match mine, would anyone be offended? I was originally just going to make a "Hall of Armor", but I think it would be cool to put them in with my marines. I have this story in my head (I lack the ability to make it into an interesting story though) that the world they are on has been hit by damn near everything out there, and these marines are all that is left from the troops there chapters has sent.

The Great Marine Swap @ 2011/02/18 14:24:39

Post by: Lennysmash

Mine is coming to you pinned to the base, its easily removed but at the same time it'll be primed black only so you can still just add your colour scheme to it. It wasn't anger at the PO just a desire to live up to my end of a bargain, lol. I'm not a big fan of debts of any kind .

@Lenny - Beautiful work - Absolute gorgeous!

Damn shame about the two lost Battle Brothers... They fight on valiantly in the warp, and for that we shall remember them

@WM- Go ahead and rebase mine if ya want. Its a resin base, so its only superglued on there. The marine should be pretty robust, so he shouldnt take too terribly to a bit of manhandling.

@CC - MEGA GROT!!! THATS AWESOME !!!
Id definitely be up fpr a trade.

Man I gotta get my butt in gear. Got a line of marines glaring angrily at me for leaving them unpainted!

Its not the marine per se that is the interesting component of the swap mate its what it achieves, various bonuses chap are, and these are just a few;

- It builds a friendship within the community
- It pushes us to strive to deliver the best model we can produce
- It offers people the chance to experiment with their work
- It can offer ideas and inspiration
- It leads to the creation of unique units, many of which have had additional fluff stories written for them.

HTH and I hope you join in with the fun. Like WM says just get a recent picture of your work and then start arranging trades. Health warning on the tin though as we have had a few misunderstandings before, this is not a place to off load old minis. Each trade is custom made to your trade partner.

It sounds like a lot of fun to me, it just seems it'd make more sense if I made a conversion and paint job tailored to my trading buddy, so he could use it on his army.

The Great Marine Swap @ 2011/02/18 22:18:29

Post by: Lennysmash

Generally the paint scheme will be of your own army whilst the load out is normally agreed with the trade partner. A lot of the players run their swaps as special units, stern-guard or veteran sergeants. The difference in colour scheme is easily explained away. An officer on secondment, or a solitary member of a force that has taken to fighting alongside his fellow marines until he can be reunited with his own chapter.

Lennysmash' advice / comment is great, I'll just add a pic for further explanation :

This is Gitsplitta's squad, all swap-made, and which must be valid for a Tactical squad (though I'm not sure), definitely legal for a Sternguard squad.
Plus, it's a lot of fun, is visually striking, and has a lot of fluff to come with!!!

The Great Marine Swap @ 2011/02/18 23:51:29

Post by: Sageheart

Yeah, I mean I use the marine swaps to create an interesting army which is only made up of traded marines, I ask for any weapon layout just to see how the army ends up looking like.

I love the idea of having a bunch of models other people painted, and having an excuse to try out new things or assemble a model you've always wanted to but cant find a way to fit it in your current army!

The Great Marine Swap @ 2011/02/19 00:43:00

Post by: whalemusic360

Additionally, some of use (like in Gitsplitta's pic that Yggs posted) have our trade partner leave off a shoulder pad to add a Deathwatch pad.

I would make some marines for your personal use to get a good grasp of your chapter, then post some pics and ask for traders. Not totally necessary though, as several people (my self included) have chapters they use just for the GMS.

OH, and some times you'll likely do variants of your chapter if you pick a main steam one, like BA.

Okay, I decided I'm happy with the skin, but not so sure about the overall colour scheme now. At first I was thinking the track unit was too orangey, after a red and purple wash I now think the whole model is a bit too red. Also not sure on that aqua, didn't come out as pale as I was thinking, not sure if I should weather it up a bit to see how it looks, or re-do it.

Really was just looking for something to try my new light-box out with

Graven, not sure which is yours yet, but these are the two basic concepts I'm going with for now:

Post by: Lennysmash

Nice mini Nathan. I agree with Arakasi on this though. Get the big mould lines, you don't need to get all of them just the ones that show through a lot. Also a little tip for you, if you are painting red onto black you will need to use a mid tone to stop the black bleeding through the red. For this you can either use a darker red like mechrite or scab red or a grey tone like fortress grey.

Also another thing you may like to try is washes, these will flow into the nooks and crannies of the model and give you instant definition on things like the gun metal. You can either buy ready made washes or simply make one up by adding water to paint.

Hope that helps, and a warm welcome to the swap.

Is there anyone who wants to paint a marine for me but doesn't want one in return? I can send a marine to start with or replace one, but I feel like there may be some folks whose work I am missing out on because they have no use for other chapters marines. If there is anyone out there, feel free to post or shoot me a pm.

And I ask because I want to get enough to make a 2x2 display board just for the GMS marines.

WM, if you're not in an awful hurry I'll do you one of my Bloodfists. Here's the one I did for Porkuslime's Deathwatch :

Oh, and not to be petty, but could you change orks to cyborks under my name on the master list (I know there's probably no difference to you marine guys but... )

Post by: monkeytroll

It's cool, I'm not bothered about parts (unless I use the last one of some uber-rare piece ), it's not like one marine is going to make much of a dent in the boxes of sprues

You have anything particular in mind ? The guy above is a vet, they get to wear red tabards/robes/cloaks.

I could probably throw in a Cruader Penitent too, old-skool models but they get a fairly boring paint-job (supposed to make thrm quicker to finish, but doesn't seem to work that well )

At this point, I could use about everything Anything from basic bolter marine up to twin lightning claws can be used. I want to see what people come up with, especially when using their own bits, and then request some specific things later or if I send them the bits. I will probably make a separate thread like Porkuslimes once I get to that point.

And welcome to the fray Perkustin. Once you get a wip up I will add you the the master list. I'm sure there will be several people interested, self included after I get some more progress on my other swaps (down to 3, but ones pretty big) and some more of my actual armies done.

The Great Marine Swap @ 2011/02/28 23:26:04

Post by: monkeytroll

OK cool, it'll probably be a vet of some sort then as I like the red to break up the bubonic brown Speaking of which, does anyone know of a spray can colour that's a fairly close match to bubonic brown, maybe a touch lighter? When I started that army GW did bubonic in a spray, which was great for undercoating and rhinos, but the last of those got used up some time ago, and I have more vehicles waiting for me to do something with. Plus I'd rather batch-spray new guys rather than paint by hand

Is it just guys in PA you're looking for WM? Just on the off-chance I do throw in a Crusader too, that might be a termie or a scout. A couple of marines will be an interesting change from the greenskins

The Great Marine Swap @ 2011/02/28 23:37:32

Post by: whalemusic360

Cant remember if I've given the outline of the fluff for them (I will write it for real sooner or later), but basically they are survivors from a botched imperial assault on a plant that is all kinds of screwed (My nids and crons are on the same bases, and at least 1 ork) and the Marines I get from here on dakka, and a few from other places. So it is possible that there could be more then one marine of a chapter, though I'd prefer if the same person painted them (so they look the same). It would make perfect sense for there to be terminators, and it is plausible for scouts and even IG to be in there! I haven't asked for any specialized units like termis at this point because I didn't think I'd get any

The Great Marine Swap @ 2011/03/01 00:01:57

Post by: monkeytroll

It's quite possible you did post the fluff back on page 3 and I've completely missed it

So they don't need a shoulder bare for a deathwatch pad or similar? You want it unbased? And if there were Crusader Penitent termies or scouts they would be based on the old space-hulk termies/space crusade scouts, not sure if that affects anything but better throw it out there just in case

Think that's all the questions for now

The Great Marine Swap @ 2011/03/01 00:13:57

Post by: whalemusic360

Nope, no DW pad, or total lack thereof, needed. Yes on the unbased, I just went through and re-based all the other marines I've gotten. I like the new models because of individuality, but old models are better then none, and the chances of me getting other models that are the same as pretty small.

The Great Marine Swap @ 2011/03/01 01:16:01

Post by: monkeytroll

No it would be individual, it wouldn't do to be sending unconverted mini's out from my underwater lair I was thinking more of the old scout armour being differing model. One of the things with my Crusaders is I like to play about with the old models, trying to get different models from the old one piece marines, using the space crusade scouts with removable arms with different weapons etc.

Pretty basic paint job, fluff has them with no chapter iconography showing whilst they are still Penitent.

Lol, just realised I'd taken pics and written about something there was a vaque possibility I'd do, think I've convinced myself

I could rustle up a marine from my DIY chapter of Honoured Sons, a pic of a wip marine should be my avatar now, or have a go at whatever anyone wants. The practice of modelling, converting and painting something new is always welcome.

I have been wanting to have a go at a couple of Mentor marines, and in the old fluff the veterans or entire squads used to be sent off to different chapters to learn about their arts of war. So, white and green anyone?

I'd like to make a marine for Gits for his Mantis Warriors Deathwatch teams, but also looking for other people who might like to swap a champion or cool sergeant figure (but I'll wait until after Adepticon to bug him about that!).

Drop me a line here, in my blog or through PM.

I have started a marine today, the current plan is a techmarine with animal furs, want him to be sort of Fenrisian, but to have my own chapter ideas. Though of course since he's a techmarine, he'll be dark red armoured. More news when I get the concept properly sorted in my head.

Not entirely sure how this marine swap stuff works, whether we swap a character, or just a regular marine, or if it is just decided between people at their discretion. I have a few spare pairs of legs, so I can roll with whatever may occur. And I have some AoBR marines if I feel like being cheeky

The marine begins...

Not sure why I am starting the marine without having anyone to swap with yet, but I'm excited about the project.

Lot of GS work still to do, going to try to sculpt as many bits and pieces around the model as I can.

Anything specific you want? I love building and converting new guys up

I have an unused PA GK body, want me to base something off of that, or let me know anything specific like I said

This is mostly for me to have something different and interesting to do, while trying to improve my painting skills. So yeah, whatever you'd enjoy doing, should be fun, I love Grey Knights, having one tagging along with my Mantis Warriors would make an interesting piece. My plan to now was a feral techmarine, wielding a bolter, with one of the old Iron Priest metal Servo arms. If you'd prefer a different set of weapons just let me know, I have an extensive bitzbox for Space Marines.

If anyone else would like to swap I am pretty sure I can have 2 on the go at once. Have some Death Company sprinting legs that I could turn into something interesting if anyone fancies something like that, or some basic standing legs. And plenty of AoBR marines. Could be really interesting trying to GS up one of those...

Okay, some progress on a guy for Solar_lion:

What are you looking for in a swap? Something that fits with your Blood Angels, a vanilla marine..? Or just something interesting.

The Great Marine Swap @ 2011/03/08 14:55:39

Post by: Gitsplitta

Hey Owain, welcome to the show. Usually, most folks do custom builds and/or paint jobs for each other so everyone gets what they need. (as graven is doing above) However, if you've got a couple of figures you don't need that you would be willing to trade, post a couple of pics and see if anyone's interested.

I don't play marines, but I really like doing figure-swaps...

Makes me want to dig through my Bitzbox and see what I can make. Are there any rules like 'no shoulderpads' or something?

The Great Marine Swap @ 2011/03/08 16:51:43

Post by: Gitsplitta

No rules, but it's best to post some examples of your work, then work out a trade with someone one-to-one. So the two of you can make exactly the the other would like. Seems to work best that way in any case. If you see someone else's work that you like, PM them and see if they'll trade (or you can post an inquiry here). Others will do the same once they see what you're capable of.

I'm guessing that's a reference to my guy It was just so Solar could choose between a Deathwatch pad and a Mentor one.

@S_L: no prob, glad you like him. Nice for a bit of hi tech variety for those Mentors!

Added some "Instructions" on the 1st post, all you vets lemme know if there is need for any further explanation or something I forgot.

Use Gits Deathwatch photo. It has the most exposure of any. Otherwise I'd go with Kate B. from Underworld holding a pic of Gits' deathwatch photo.

Just one mans' opinion.

Okay, posting here just because I miss posting on Dakka Terribly. Have been slowly re-painting my ENTIRE ARMY (ugh) and have been wanting to put up pics and start a blog for a while. But my fiance's down in florida visiting family and she's got the only good camera with her. So I'm (barely) resisting the urge to start it without pics and promise that "they're coming!"

I've also been resisting the urge to post here before I have pictures or something to swap... but I failed today. I'm posting. I suppose just to say that as soon as I get pictures up I'm gonna see if anyone wants to do a little "combat squad from my campaign for combat squad of your chapter" trade.

So expect my eager return. ; )

nkelsch - You don't have to play marines, there's a few of us doing orks and I believe there's a couple doing guard (at least I seem to remember someone mentioning guard). What do you normally field?

Hey I finally dug up some extra marines that are currently sitting around collecting dust.

this is what I've got

CSM with bolt pistol and powerfist

CSM with night lords helm, armed with ccw and bolt pistol

CSM with space wolves wolf helm and bolter

2 Second edition khrone brezerkers

I would be willing to paint and trade these they are all currently bare plastic. If somebody wants to paint a White Consuls marine for me that would be groovy pants.

I think I'd like in on this, here's the chaplain in terminator armor from my Sable Swords chapter. He's about to bring the emperor's sweet vengeance to my British line infantry AND my U.S. Paratroopers, so you know this chapter is tough as nails!

The sable swords are in Codex: Space Marines but to put it simply they wear black power armor with white knee pads and white pauldron linings. I'd be happy swapping plain standard battle brothers with someone or if anybody wants to get fancy I'd be more than happy to see if there's any cool SM's in the FLGS consignment case that demand to be painted!

Gits is very busy preparing for Adepticon at the moment, so isn't taking Mantis Warrior offers, but if you're looking for a poor second to his skill with a brush (and a slightly grittier painting style), check out my Mantis Warriors blog in my sig. If you like my work we can definitely work something out.

(If not, no hard feelings, I know Gits work is pretty exemplary and you're pretty darn good yourself!)

By the way, I will spend a LOT more time painting a swap marine than I did any of the tactical marines... It'll be Ahazra Redth level of painting, not just slap it on and run

Due to lack of camera, no pics on my progress yet for my swap with BishopGore.

His non-gk arm has been attached to his body, and a pad has been attached.
Before I pick a backpack, do you want him to have backpack decoration (flags, icons, etc) ?

I usually stick to banner poles for HQs only in my own army, but he is a visitor, so I leave it to your own judgement. If you want me to choose, I would say no, unless you think the addition of a banner pole will frame his head better, or give him something he is missing

Basic colours have been added, did a little highlighting on the backpack so far to check the colours went well together. Lots of work ahead!

BD, I'll get pics up asap.

Do you think you can have him pointing the bolter, rather than across his chest if that is possible?
Such a cool looking marine deserves 'active arms'
(If you don't want to, its fine, but just a suggestion )

Do you want your marine decked out with pouches and nades?

BLACKHAND wrote:Ok so I thought I would upload some WIPs a bit earlier than expected

First up is the marine I am starting for Tony_Nids_10, wanted to see how much movement I could get without resorting to an assault marine's legs and figured that by giving him some uneven terrain and having him balance on it while aiming I might get the movement I wanted.

He need shortening at the waist and the left arm may get tucked closer to the torso, and of course the GS work on the gun arm is only a third done but you get the idea

Next is the marine I am building for Gitsplitta..and he needs a bit of explanation.
I've been a real fan of Git's two blogs since he started them and his "Doom Eagle Odyssey" blog has given me much hope that I may eventually have a son interested in the hobby (or failing that perhaps my daughter will get into it, she already helps daddy paint by tipping my paint jars on the desk and finger painting the walls..why blazing orange? why?) Anyhoo I have been tempted to build my version of a mantis warrior for a while and send it to splitta but this project has given me the perfect excuse to send my regards without stepping on his toes by hijacking his chapter!

So without further waffling I present to you

"Leads-the-Pride"...

Why is his hand waving around like that? is he just happy to see us?

No, he is waving on his two young charges, brave young warriors who have been chosen to join the ranks of the Sabre Legion and fight for the rest of their lives in the unending wars of the Imperium...

I built a decorative base for the three figures but the all pop out as you can see....

I probably should have waited till I had a paint job on the young warriors that showed them off better but hey it's late and I have been working on them all day I want to get some feedback

Cheers,
wow these are really good do you have any left? I would love to swap

Gitsplitta wrote:OK, finally got things to the point where I can show my progress. This is for my trade with Styrofoam04 who runs Red Corsairs, the former allies and now arch enemies of my Mantis Warriors.

Meet Benedictus. A member of the MW vanguard and liaison officer to the Astral Claws during the Badab War. He was corrupted by chaos during that time and fled with the Astral Claws (now Red Corsairs). The final model will have a Chapterhouse pre-herasy jump pack and a chaos shoulder pad on the cybernetic arm (left), and one of my original free-hand mantis warrior pads on the right arm. Depicted in a flying Bushido kick (the right leg is actually bent at a sharp angle to simulate the leap, you just can't see it from this angle).

I wanted him to be a little chaossy but not over the top. He's not a traditional chaos marine, as with the Red Corsairs... having "turned" relatively recently (100 yrs or less). Since the original Mantis Warrior badge had large mandibles, I've included them in the build. I figure things like chainswords would wear out, so I used chaos swords instead of imperial models. He has one cybernetic arm and on that shoulder will be a chaos pad, as if he'd lost an arm in a battle and had to repace it (and the equipment) with what was at hand.

It's a really rough build at this point, but will get more refined in short order.

If you want to see shots from other angles, check out Styro's blog at... http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/305150.page I just don't want to muck up this thread with a bunch of WIP shots.

Anyone willing to trade Guardsmen?
I got these two guys collecting dust, maybe someone wants them?
The bases are painted green, but can easily be changed to fit in your army/theme.
Note: The models have GLOSSY varnish upon them, to protect them against little family members.

If you are interested, just let me know...

Ok, I'm down. The primary armies I've painted are pre-Heresy Space Wolves and Death Skullz Orks. I have painted other Orks, Grey Knights, Witch Hunters, Ultramarines, Wood Elves and some High Elves, too.

Some of my work:

My pre-heresy Wolves:

My Orks:

And some random stuff:

You can just do a marine then. The only postage you have to pay for is the shipping of the model that you are trading. The one you get will be paid for by the person shipping.

Hello,

Now I see we are expanding from just space marines i feel i can offer some help. The following is a grey knight justicar i painted up, I'm willing to part with him or paint a marine to a similar quality. I have also been known to paint a mean hazard stripe. My services are available. I'm currently building an ultramarines force.

Thanks! They've moved along quite a bit since then - try here for the latest in this thread (or here in my project blog). They are kustom builds - one for Gitsplitta and one for me - so I can bear parting with the first! I have a nine person queue and I haven't even finished my first (thankfully Gitsplitta is patient!). I'm happy to add people to the end - but I wouldn't expect anything anytime soon! (I'll be approaching the next person on my list once Gitsplitta's is sent out, and then when Artsoldier35's Trukk is, modelling wise, complete)

Just going to reaffirm my interests:

As well as my Homebrew chapter im also a blood angels player, examples can be seen in my P&M blog below.

I loved the idea of Gitsplittas Inquisatorial squad, so im going to shamelessly steal the idea. Mine will be played as a Sterguard Squad

The squad would consist of:

SGT: PowerFist, Bolter.
HVY: Multimelta/Heavy Bolter
HVY: Multimelta/Heavy Bolter
Standard: combi-melta
Standard: combi-melta
Standard: combi-melta
Standard: combi-melta
Standard:
Standard:
Standard:

If you would like to paint a member of the squad, just pm me or reply here. just let me know which position your filling.
Ideally id like the models LEFT shoulder blank or with a deathwatch pad, and the model unbased

Some im really interested in are; Marines Chrysemys, an IceAngel, a solar lion and schanks sons of guilliman (orange and blue).

You can if you like! Showing a colour scheme will help get people interested in swapping with you. But often you can just approach someone in the thread, or say a particular marine you're looking for and that can be enough to get discussion going.

Well its time for me to enter this fun little place, in total I have five marines that are up for trade, four still need to be assembled and all need paint. Of course if you dont want to to paint one Im fine with that.

So the only one that I have right now assembled and with a pics is....

Yes the pewter BlackTemplar Captain with combi melta and power weapon, he just doenst fit into my army.

Trades Im interested in are for a vangaurd squad, so closecombat is the theme.

The Great Marine Swap @ 2011/03/18 19:31:02

Post by: BishopGore

I absolutely love Black Templars, either early next year or when the BT codex comes out (depending on if it gets announced any time in the next year) I will be starting a BT army.

I have 2 pairs of death company legs with the least BA theme to them and a whole host of CC weapons from the assault squad, SM captain and space wolves boxes... totally be up for making you a custom plastic figure in exchange (as soon as I get the marine done for Lucifer, which will be pretty soon), your choice of weapons.

The Great Marine Swap @ 2011/03/18 19:50:38

I wouldn't hold your breath on a black templar codex. They just got a huge FAQ, I see necrons, tau, eldar and chaos needing a revamp before templar would see one

Indeed, I have been told as much, but hope springs eternal! And if I make sure I collect a very open army list hopefully it'll fit in with the codex when it arrives in... three to four years

The Great Marine Swap @ 2011/03/18 19:54:39

Post by: whalemusic360

I bet we see either DA or BT before Eldar, maybe Tau. No way we would go 5 (you forgot SoB) codecis with no power armor.

The Great Marine Swap @ 2011/03/18 20:28:01

Post by: TheChronoTrigger

Necrons and tau desperately need a revisit. The reason I say Eldar is space wolves are easily one of the best psychic armies in the game, Eldar should dwarf them in psychic powers, which is not the case. With each new codex Eldar slowly slip to less and less powerful psychic status. Even the GK codex offers amazing psychic powers.

But we digress from the purpose of this thread. WM, i will try to get a picture up tonight or tomorrow of the GK terminator for ya

The Great Marine Swap @ 2011/03/18 20:38:10

Post by: whalemusic360

I agree eldar are slipping, but DA, who have a "Master Psyker" and a powerful librarium are also increadably bad (they only even have 3 powers, and one is exclusive to the named guy). BT are overcosted compaired to any other codex. And we know how much GW luvs marines.

@Bishop, Im up for what you got, and thats whatever you wanna make.

The idea for my vanguard (and really the orginal idea for my army) its a patchwork group of various marines. So really Im just looking for something that isnt made by me. Weapon wise, as long as its CC oriented then its all good.

Want me to paint my guy for you?

I'll need a week to finish off my first marine (I've had a truly terrible week and have had zero time for painting, so have fallen behind) for Lucifer, then I will start straight away on the Vanguard. I assume you want a jump pack on him? I know it's assumed, but I know some people run them in Rhinos... I ordered some jump packs from a bitz site last night, so they should be here soon.

I'll probably do a Mantis Warriors Vanguard, check out pictures of my sternguard for the helm design (in my blog thread). Do you like busy marines (pouches, grenades, holsters) or simple and clean lines?

And yes, I'm up for a trade with you

There are 4th edition codices, we're talking about 5th edition codices. Currently many armies lack an up to date codex which works with the new 5th Ed rules (which really tightened up the game compared to 4th ed).

Am I right in thinking the Tau codex came out pre 4th edition even? I know I have the latest one and it is ridiculously old...

Sweet, glad to hear. Not sure what your refering to as name? I don't have a gk army. A friend was moving and sold me his gk stuff with an offer i couldn't refuse. I just felt like painting them. I can give them a name if you want? The reason i asked about the bases is because i'm gonna be using them for my ultramarines and if you already had bases id just keep em.

@ Sage - You sent a yellow Son of Lucifer

@ Chrono - No need to name them if they dont have one. I think they are going to be an Inquisitor's personal body guard. If you'd like to use the bases for your UM's, you are welcome to em. I think I have enough bases to cover it. If not, I'll just order more!

Ok, no jump pack, lots of cool CC.

Yes, please do paint the captain. My main reason for getting involved in the GMS is to have other people paint models for me that I can include in my army and have a story about. I am looking forward to getting my own company of Death Watch painted by a few different people (one will be from Gits, even if I have to wait until after all the other stuff he has done, I'll be in the queue!), which will be a major talking point of my army.

So, yes please, painted would be awesome.

Ok, coupla pics for WM

Scout sergeant from the Crusaders Penitent. This is going to give me the chance to try something different with the armour. As this is supposed to be a 'quick-build' force it's normally just a black basecoat followed by a dry-brush of copper. This time I'll work up from tin bitz and use some washes.

Test poses for a couple of veteran BloodFists. One with the book may become a sergeant, haven't decided on whether he's holding a firearm or a blade yet. Other guy seems to have dropped the scroll he was looking after, that kind of behaviour is probably what got him seconded to wherever he's going to Final product will be without the blu-tac or the mould lines, and you'll probably get both these guys.

Oh, and by unbased do you mean glued to an empty base, or sent with a seperate plain base?

The Great Marine Swap @ 2011/03/20 01:00:29

Post by: whalemusic360

Freaking awesome Monkey! It will be a big help! I always like getting the BT bits on guys, they aren't an army I play, so dont really see the bits that often.

As for basing. If you wanted to (or already did) attach them thats ok. If you dont, it'll mean they will likely get some cooler stuff underfoot. Either way is fine though.

I have some photos uploading, so assuming someone bumps the thread, they'll be up in about 20 minutes.

Thank you my simian friend

So Porkuslime asked me to do a Hawk Lord for him, using some of the FW Raven Guard pieces, which he sent. As the very first marine, and a large part of the reason this thread even exists was because of the Blood Drinker I did for him, thought it appropriate to post it here. Holy cow has my painting gotten better.
VS.

VS.

My other offering for the night is a Proof of Concept for my GMS Display board. I'm going to put magnets of the bottom of all the bases, and have 25, 40, and 60 mm spots on the board with hidden magnets underneath to hold the models in place. I tried it with a 60mm base that came with a carnifex and a 25mm empty spot. The glue buggers were pre-existing, not from my placement of magnets.

And with some models on it

It is strong enough that if I put a metal model (Porkuslimes actually ) I can turn it at over 90 degrees and it is secure. Plastics stay on upside down. I'm going to do all my bases like this from now on I think. Gunna have to talk to Bloodquest

Apologies for rubbish photo, it's too early. A Solar Lion for Solar_Lion:

Patroclus, Chapter Master of the Solar Lions

I'm thinking Ultrasmurf successor, aka the Lions of Caliban, battlecry "Glory to the Father!" Fluff is not my strong point though.

What colour scheme would you like? I'm thinking orange worked up from a red base with yellow highlights. Also, you want him on this scenic base, on a standard 30mm, or with a pin in foot so you can swap between the two? I'll put some more/better pics up in my blog later.

I think a DA successor would work better for anything lion related, from a fluff standpoint.

Oh yeah, Caliban is DA, right? DA successor they are then. My fluff-fu is weak, as previously mentioned.

Indeed it is, Smurfs are Ultramar. Plus the DA Primarch is Lion el Johnson, so, yeah.

I need standard marines at the moment, and if somebody could get me a marine with one of those GK halberd weapons I would be most greratful. I still have the chaos/wolf guy, night lords marine and brezerkers avalible.

Sweet.. I'm doing a CC termie for you.. The first Lamenter Termie I've ever done in those colors. Now with Airbrush technology!!

My main 2 colors for the SL are Red and white. You can see the swap I did for WM in my gallery. But since he is a commanding figure I'd say .. your choice.. I've only ever used the Vanilla codex for the SL. Never gave it much thought other than not using the BA one. I'll have to pick up the DA.

Most excellent my friend! Thanks

The DA book is pretty bad, but will let you take Deathwing (all terminators) and Ravenwing (all bikes) which are fun.

And it'll let you take CC termies with Cyclones - brutal! Glad you like it SL. I'll do him your scheme - base thoughts? Scenic, usable, or interchangeable?

I will soon have 9 spare marines.
I am willing to do any colour scheme, but I am also not exactly the best painter.

Just contact me with what you want done and I'll get back to you.

Lorna

Finally got something worth updating...

I saw someone say that they take high quality photos of their minis as they paint to see the flaws, already in these pics I am seeing more than I could with my naked eye. Dang it.

He's getting there BBLucifer!

Cheers, zx

He's a techmarine for a vanilla homebrew SM chapter called the Defenders of Obscuras. The paint scheme is based on the native american Pawnee tribal flag, as they would wear wolf furs when they went to war, and I intend to use Space Wolf items to make them.

I created the chapter for this marine swap, here is some background I wrote for BBLucifer:

My homebrew chapter has a very similar colour scheme to the Brazen Claws, but I fancy attempting to paint some quartered marines in the future, so long as I don't have to do a whole army of them!

So the Defenders of Obscuras are born. They are an Ultramarines successor chapter with a penchant for wearing animal skins of their home planet when they go to war. Their planet is far on the galactic rim in the segmentum obscuras, and was terraformed before the Dark Age of Technology with an Earth like flora and fauna, but the continents suffer from extreme stresses (much like Fenris) once per year when a planet in a decaying orbit comes too close to their homeworld. The world is not as unstable as Fenris with islands appearing and disappearing, but earthquakes and tsunamis are a daily occurence, and so major cities have never appeared. The natives are held at black powder level of civilisation by the Marines of the world, to keep them from becoming lax or weak. Great advances in technology are crushed by the seemingly godlike armoured beings who the populace fear as much as they revere. In the basements of the fortress monastery are great foundries where technically adept humans are brought. There they are treated well and nurtured to produce new and interesting designs, away from the eyes of the Adeptus Mechanicus. Many squads of Tactical marines are led by Techmarines rather than sergeants.

I realise this is a bit more Iron Hands esque than Ultramarines, but these guys don't go in for replacing body parts, they actually want to innovate, which is a dangerous practice in the 41st millenium. I plan to flesh these ideas out and maybe make these into a second vanilla marine army to run alongside my mantis warriors (I like the idea of groups of marines working together, so I don't see why I can't mix and match my squads in an army list!)
