That's a fine looking fishman. Azazelx is right-- that would be a great addition to a Deep One warband.

Well, I did pledge for the Mythos expansion in Bones III. Plus, I have those Tiik that will hang out with them. Fun fact, the Dark Mariners actually have summoners who can summon Mythos type monsters in-game. One such monster and a summoner were both unlocked in the last Kickstarter. And yes, I pledged for that summoner, too.

I am now done with the Deepwars/Shadowsea half of my monthly pledge. The last of the five figures, Melandil Runeseer is now done.

Melandil is actually his name and he's another named character. This guy is a leader character and he's equipped with a control device for controlling Biomechs. Melandil is also one of the few non-mutated Dark Mariners in the line. There's two others, I believe. One is another commander riding a giant biomechanical octopus, the other is a female riding on what is essentially a Disk of Tzeench. This is what regular Dark Mariners are supposed to look like. Basically, they look like Asari.

He came out good. He was probably the main reason I haven't started more of my Mariners. I could never figure out what I wanted to do with him.

There actually are a few more named purebloods in the books, but models haven't been made of them yet. Did you get the queen on her flying disc? What about some of the crazy stuff like the ethereal crab from the last campaign?

No, it's actually the Cephalids and characters that I'm missing. I currently only have one other Cephalid, and that's the Biomancer.

I've hit another monthly goal! I completed one of my Gecko TAGs.

This guy's been sitting on my table ever since I first posted pics of him months ago. I'd started and stripped it several times and just had serious painter's block with it. It's finally finished though and I can move onto the other one.

The freehand was very basic, but I'm happy with my results.

I also painted up the Modern Adventurer, Levon from Hasslefree Miniatures. Hasslefree was my Brexit order. I got him and a few of their modern troopers. The nice thing about Levon is that I can use him in apocalyptic games and I can use him as an Emergency Services 112 in Infinity!

Okay, another challenge figure complete! That leaves just one figure left for my monthly challenge, and that's going to be the other Gecko.

What did I complete? A PanO Nisses. The old combi-rifle version. He's got a neat, very deynamic pose, but because of the way he's assembled, he was kind of tricky to paint.

So, it looks like I'll be focusing the rest of the week on painting the Gecko.

The July challenge is now complete! I've finished the final pledged figure, the second Gecko!

and I tried to freehand a cartoony, angry shark on one shoulder.

You may notice this Gecko is rather shiny. Well, I bought a brand new can of dullcoat today to do the final seal on this figure. I spray it and guess what, it wound up giving him a gloss coat. I don't know what the hell happened, because the label on the can clearly says dullcoat. It kind of pisses me off. This particular model gave me some issues, as well. Hell, the box in general gave me issues. First, the box was mispacked to hell and back with tons of the little bits, like the heels, but not enough parts to actually complete a single figure. Then, once I got the replacements, I noticed that one of the legs on this Gecko didn't fit right, so it's attached very poorly with a big gap. Then I tried making a base quite a few times. The stupid Greenstuff kept sticking to the basing pad rather than the base itself and this base was the best one I managed. It doesn't look very good. Then there's the mishap with the dull coat. Ugh. I'm just glad they're done. I'm going to have to take the dullcoat back to the hobby shop tomorrow.

Anyway, here's the completed July challenge.

To make matters worse, last night someone knocked the dual wielding Gecko off the table he was on, snapped his right arm off. That was thankfully an easy fix and there wasn't any scratching done to the paint. The Azra'il didn't fare so well though. Someone managed to knock him off the table as well and then stepped on him, busting off both arms, scratching a ton of paint, and bending his left ankle, snapping it off. I spent a good chunk of last night repairing him. Thankfully, you can't even tell. That pic is post-repair.

Next month, I haven't decided just yet on what I want to do. I'm leaning towards two Infinity boxes for my challenge. Likely to be the Squalo and an Antipode Assault Pack.

Yikes about the busted figures.

My kids didn't do it, did they? I would hope by now they're used to tiny little things they need to be careful around.

I think your August challenge should be to finish some of those start collecting boxes you got recently (as I eye the half dozen I've bought as well...).

I can't speak for the current Dog Soldiers as I only have the old three-toed one and have yet to build my Devil Dog. The Geckos are definitely bigger than the old Dog Soldier though. I'm curious how my Azra'il and eventual Ahl Fassed will compare in size to the Geckos as they're all essential super heavy infantry.

Did anyone here see or back the RBJ Games Kickstarter, S.T.A.R. Troopers? This Kickstarter went great. It hit pretty much all of its goals and got a fair number of freebies. The Kickstarter was listed as fulfilling in October, but it's actually almost done. I got my pledge last week, and I have to say, the quality is supberb! There are almost no mold lines and very little in the way of cleanup was needed. This is one of the Kickstarters that I've been eagerly awaiting and I was not disappointed. The figures have a great, almost industrial look to their gear, which really got me wanting to paint them to match up with my Brokkrs. So, tonight I went and painted up a test figure. What do you think?

I'd like to think that they're a bunch of space miners who've scavenged up some weapons, sort of like the original Red Faction game. I'd even suggested during the Kickstarter doing up some figures with mining gear as improvised weapons, like pickaxes or shovels and having one with a mining laser. The creators said that they liked my idea and they really must've, because one of the paid add-on figures is equipped with a heavy laser very similar to what I described for a mining laser. Naturally, I had to get that one. Since I'm pleased with how my scheme turned out, I'll probably do the heavy laser figure next.

Had the same issue with the gaps on the Mk12 Gecko. Seems to be a common problem. They look good though, liking the pacman and shark details

Shame about the azra'il but like you said, you can't really tell after the repairs so nice job there.

I'm liking the colours on that last fig. Vibrant yellow and the candy stripes are a nice touch.

Glad you guys like the STAR Trooper as well. He was fun and quick to paint. I'm house sitting (again), so my hobby time is pretty limited at the moment, but I am going to try and whip up another STAR Trooper this weekend. I was also paid for my house sitting with Forgeworld models, so I'm going to try and start working on some of those figures.

Well, I wasn't able to get to the STAR Troopers like I wanted. In fact, I wasn't able to get nearly as much hobby time in as I was hoping to. However, August is off to a good start, it's still the first day of the month and I've already completed my first figure for this month's challenge!

Alright, first, ignore the flower-patterned couch in the back. Second, obviously not the best pic, but that's what my camera produced. This slightly blurry pic is going to have to do for now though until I can get back home and take a better pic. It's really hard to tell, but I painted him in the Stygies black/dark grey and red colors. Hopefully when I take some better pics tomorrow you'll actually be able to see the colors better. Really, I took this so I could have some photographic proof that I've already completed one of my challenge figures. Two more of these guys to go, then on to the Antipodes!

I've got some better pics of the Thallax now.

One of the profile shots is a bit blurry, but overall better than the pic I took yesterday. The next Thallax (Melta) is now being cleaned along with a Dark Mariner Bio Mecha and two of Anvil Industry's new Regiments figures. Figured I'd do a couple on the side while I'm working on other stuff.

Having seen it in person, I'll say it was quite impressive.

Like I said to you, it seemed completely appropriate to have the gloss on the faceplate area. Looks cool.

I'm more interested when you're starting the big stuff!

Which Dark Mariners Bio Mecha are you making- the flamethrower one, the crab claw guy, or the much larger one with tentacles coming out of every joint?

Barzam Paints random miniatures- 6/30/2020 Dusk Raider Thunder Warrior Sniper @ 2016/08/03 18:56:24

Post by: Barzam

It's the bigger gold one with the tentacles everywhere. I'm undecided if I want it to be gold like the fluff says or make it green like the rest of the Dark Mariners.

When I get to my Domitar will depend on how fast I can get through everything else. I suspect that the Antipodes might take the longest. So far I'm moving at a good pace though, so who knows.

I got four new figures completed last night, but I was only just now able to take pictures of them. Some of you may recall, way back when I was able to take pictures using my Deadzone scenery, I had some modern troopers done up as stand-ins for the Haqqislam allied Nomads. I'd intended to do more of them for a long time, but the currency exchange just didn't make it worthwhile to order from the UK. Once Brexit hit and the pound faltered, I was finally able to make that order and expand their ranks. I ordered four, but right now only three are done. The fourth guy will come, eventually. If I'm quick with this month's challenges, I may even get him done this month!

So, here's my newest Al-Waziri.

Obviously, two of those loadouts are not actually usable in Infinity. I don't really care though. They'll probably get used in other games instead. I just liked the idea of having a bunch of Nomad mercs in more Haqq appropriate fatigues.

Here's all of them together.

Despite the shotty and the smg, I actually do have enough to run a full Nomad team in a Qapu Khalki army list with TAG support.

I said I had four figures completed though. The fourth figure is unrelated. He's one of Brother Vinni's Nuclear Sandlot figures. I'd actually been wanting some Fallout figures, so I wound up buying him just for fun. He may or may not ever see actual in-game use.

I'm guessing Hassle Free?

What I'd really like is to play a game where I could put those anti-zombie troops to use. The Naffatun seem like they would be pretty useful in that role as well.

The Thallax Cohort is now complete! This marks the completion of my first Forgeworld kit!

Here's the leader, because every leader must be posed pointing at something.

and here's the guy that was really the entire reason I chose this set. I really liked the look of the multi-melta dude.

And the Cohort all together.

Up next, the Dark Mariner Close Combat Biomech! And there'll be some more 15mm guys, because I had a bit of free space in my painting queue tonight since the Biomech was being primed and the Thallax were finished.

Nice work Barzam, I have really like these miniatures since they were previewed a fair few months ago. How many pieces were they in and how were they to put together?

I think the flashes of red and the gloss faces set them off really well, lovely stuff.

Post by: Barzam

You're looking at about 13 or so parts per Thallax, give or take a piece or two depending on the pose. In general, you have head, torso (with backpack and shoulder pads molded on), right arm, left arm (weapon holding guys have the weapon attached, pointing guy doesn't), waist, right leg, left leg, thruster nozzles for the back, and a cable that runs from the weapon to the torso. Assembly is pretty straightforward. If you've built a 40k figures before, you can build a Thallax. There's not a lot of posing options though, unfortunately. Limbs are paired, each has a divot sculpted into it and its partner limb has a corresponding number of divots. So, left leg 1 has one divot and right leg 1 has one divot, etc. So, there's not really any worry about mismatching the limbs. Aside from the right hand on the guy aiming his Lightning Rifle not wanting to glue together for some reason, assembly was easy and had no real issues.

Casting was generally good as well with just a couple of air bubbles and some slight mold slip in a couple spots. All of the QC issues were easily dealt with without needing any advanced modeling skill. I did have to heat up and bend one of the cables though, so be aware that that might be an issue. I think the hardest thing was getting them base coated since I decided spraying them would be easier. I had to get at some interesting angles to get the areas under their weapons coated. Overall though, these weren't so bad.

The real challenge is going to be the Domitar.

As I mentioned, I worked on some 15mm figures. I finished 9 new figures, 6 space suit equipped Colonial Marines and 3 zombies.

I thought I'd try a new color on the zombies. I also worked on the Dark Mariner construct tonight. He's nearly done. Just a bit more organic bits to do and his base. I also got several more 15mm figures and a building based tonight. I have more Xin and more space suit equipped Marines to come.

They actually have really detailed sculpts. It's surprising how detailed they are considering their size. Sometimes I kind of wish they were less detailed, like the zombies so I could just basecoat, slather on a wash, and call them good.

For those interested, I also took a size comparison pic of the GZG figures as compared to a GW Space Marine. It's kind of funny. The Space Marine is more accurately proportioned against the 25mm figures than he is compared to other 28s.

Well, the SM were originally to be bigger than 25mm figs, but GW did not make the4 SM relatively larger per the IG as they ought to have done.

Those are actually papercraft cargo containers that Antenociti's Workshop has available on their site. Free, too. They also have Umbrella, Skynet, MNU, Cerberus, and the RDA from Avatar. I'm sure the logos are all totally used with permission, too.

I do wish GW would upscale their Space Marines. The Sigmarines are about the right size. It does seem like they've been slowly creeping upwards in scale of late, though.

Anyway, my next monthly goal is achieved! I completed the Dark Mariner Close Combat Biomech tonight. He's a big'un!

And, I pulled up a size comparison against a "standard" 28mm figure and a "standard" 15mm figure.

He's fairly large, as you can see. Thankfully, Anitmatter had the mercy to make him out of resin instead of metal. If he were metal, he'd probably be considered a deadly weapon. Funny enough, despite towering over the Deathguard, he's actually not that much bigger than the other Dark Mariners. Maybe a head and a couple centimeters taller. Just goes to show that the Dark Mariners are all kind of huge in comparison to everybody else.

Next up, aside from working on more 15mm on the side, I'll be working on my Antipode Assault Pack. Not the current one though. It's the old one! Say what you will about the old sculpts, but I rather like them. I've got most of the set assembled and have even begun priming them already. Hopefully I can get them done as quickly as I got the Biomech done.

I've enjoyed painting the Spec Ops guys. There's still one more to go. Someday I'll get to him, even.

I've been kind of procrastinating about painting the Antipodes. I always find it hard to begin painting Infinity models. So, the whole set has been sitting in the garage, primed, waiting for me to bring them up to start painting. I will get them, too. I've been focusing on 15mm figures though and I haven't felt much like doing a lot of painting this weekend, anyway. Hopefully during the week I'll get my drive back.

Here's what I have been working on though. Excuse how rough some might look and remember, these are tiny and I have to make the details stand out in order for them to be visible at tabletop level.

First, we have a Shia Khan Assault Pioneer.

Funky design, right? I just grabbed a few figures from this line to try them out. I find the weird pillbug armor on these guys oddly appealing.

We have a running civvie next.

You've seen that mold before. I'd mentioned before that I was going to do this. This was originally a Rebel Minis zombie. But, there's no damage to the guy anywhere, so he works great as a fleeing civilian.

Next, a USMC Space Marine from Ground Zero Games' Moongrunt line.

I have quite a few of these guys, actually, plus Chinese troops. Expect more space marines in the future.

I painted up a couple more Xin troops.

The guy on the left is the unique commander figure that's included with the platoon packs. The guy on the right is a comms operator. I royally screwed up his face. He actually has a fairly well sculpted face, but, I tried painting eyes, messed that up, tried to clean it up, messed that up, and that all led to him having mush for a face.

I don't recall if I showed this one before. This is a female Prydian Muster Patrol trooper.

She was one of Ion Age's monthly freebie figures.

Last, we have a couple of minis from Micropanzer.

I'd purchased a set of 15mm figures from Brookhurst that Micropanzer had put together as a demo set for Tomorrow's War. I split it with Highlord Tamburlaine and he's already painted most of the alien half of that set. These guys actually fit in surprisingly well with my Prydian Muster and PDF troops from Ion Age.

Yeah that biomech thing is fearsome looking! I like all of the mini soldiers, if I could just find a game or a big enough single line that I liked I'd probably go for some.

If you want a fleshed out line and ruleset, check out Ion Age. It's essentially skirmish level 40k in 15mm. It even has single player rules. There's four playable factions (Prydians, Prang, Shia Khan, and Xin), with the Prydians having three subfactions (The Reatined, Muster, and PDF). The main rulebook just covers the Prydian Civil War while the other factions are covered by free army expansion .pdf files. There's also a recent expansion that covers vehicular and mecha combat.

Okay, last 15mm update until I finish the Antipodes. I swear, I'm working on them next.

Anyway, this is another Ion Age vehicle. This is the recently released Afara Strider combat mech. There's currently three options for these available, close combat, laser cannon, and howitzer. I chose the close combat type because it has two hands. The ranged types have gun arms, which aesthetically I don't like as much. I believe that the Afaras operate in groups of three, so I may need to purchase two more at some point.

You ought to do a scale shot with that thing. I'm curious how big it is.

Ask and ye shall receive. Afara size comparison.

Now, I don't get a Gundam vibe from it at all. For some reason, and it's probably the colors I chose, it reminds me more of the Temjin from Virtual On. The Afara isn't as huge as I'd necessarily like. I'd like it to have been just a smidge taller. It's actually the same size as the Proteus from White Dragon Miniatures. There's a second mecha mentioned in the Callsign Taranis rules called a Magog. Assuming it's the mech pictured in one of the art bits, it should actually be bigger. But, so far, no models of the Magog.

Tonight was actually productive. I hunkered down and got to work on the controller girl that comes with the Antipodes. I actually managed to totally finish her even in the same night!

It's a little hard to see here, but I tried doing a simplified take on multicam on her pants. I'm actually very pleased with how it turned out. I'm thinking I may wind up stripping the Dozer and giving him this pattern.

The first Antipode Warrior is finished.

My own ideas of these guys is that they can still fit in the fluff. The way I see it, these would be likely to be Antipodes from Dawn's southern regions. The drier, more arid areas. I kind of see these Antipodes as a different subspecies. They are to the new Antipodes what a Coyote or Jackal is to a Wolf. Related, but evolved for a different environment and to fill a different niche in the environment. I see these guys as being more like scavengers whereas the new types are hunters. With that in mind, I went with a look more akin to a Jackal. I wanted him to look more like a Golden Jackal, but I wound up with one more like the Black-Backed Jackal. Oh well, I'm happy with how he looks.

Work progresses on the other two Antipodes. I got their base coats pretty much done tonight. Basing and a few details are all that remain. I got a bit distracted though and painted a Mantic figure. I was planning on doing this guy as a stretch goal, so I am going to count him for this month's painting challenge.

Yeah, that's The Survivor, from the original Deadzone Kickstarter. I really liked the look and the fluff for this guy. He was one I was really looking forward to painting. Low and behold though, when I got him, his casting sucked. I think among the mercenaries, he turned out the worst. Most of his details were soft and I couldn't tell what what part of his suit was the uniform and what was the armor, the casting was so soft. For some reason, I had an urge to try painting him though. So, I buckled down and this was the result. Despite how horrible his cast was, I'm actually really pleased with my results. He actually looks decent now. I did wind up purchasing the metal version during the second pledge manager because I was so disappointed with what I got. I'll have to track it down and slap some paint on that one as well one of these days.

The Survivor was one of the best models from DZ1. I really dig your take on him- the bright orange hazmat suit really pops. Are you thinking of doing more old DZ stuff?

I think he should do more DZ1 stuff, so we then have a good excuse to actually play the game!

Between the two of us we probably could make a very VERY dense board.

The burning question would then be which faction do we each play? We both have a smattering of every faction painted.

Thanks for the kind words about The Survivor, guys. His cast sucked so much. I was worried I'd never be able to pull him off. For whatever reason though, the first Deadzone really clicked for me and hit pretty much all of the right buttons. I wound up going heavily into it, too. I don't think I went as heavily as Highlord Tamburlaine, but I went in pretty heavy regardless. None of Mantic's other Kickstarters have really grabbed me like that one did.

Blaine, btw, would be my second stretch goal of the month. See, I completed my challenge. The whole Assault Pack is now finished.

And, here's the whole team.

While hunting for my Blaine figure, I found a Zpocalypse figure I'd started and never finished, so I finished him tonight, too. This is the Zpocalypse Scientist from their second Kickstarter.

Eh, it's hit and miss when it comes to prepping Mantic figures. Some are super easy, some aren't. For instance, I've never had any issues with the restic Corporate Troops. Never had to clean anything, even. Then, some items, like pretty much all of the Dreadball minis I've handled have been absolutely terrible to clean up. It varies.

I couldn't resist, I did one more Eldar today.

Technically he's not actually an Eldar since he's not a GW figure, but whatever. He's clearly supposed to be one. I think these were called Howling Wolves or something. Chapterhouse made them. I have a full set, but I've been even slower to paint them than I have my actual Eldar.

I did paint actual Mantic figures though, like I'm supposed to be doing.

Here's a zombie.

The last of my Stage 2 Plague

and a Marauder Mawbeast.

I see that Barzam uses a "warm colors" approach for most of the projects, like his Morats cannot be confused with mine as I use "cooler/colder temp colors" for mine.

Huh. I Hadn't even noticed it, but You're right. I do tend to go more for warmer colors. For some reason, cooler color schemes tend to give me problems. I can't ever seem to blend or highlight them properly. I think my problem with those colors lies in the fact that the blue washes I have kind of suck compared to the rest.

That's a nice batch of stuff. That not-Banshee is a very nice model-- if I still played 40K I would have to pick some up. Also, putting that zombie on tiptoes was a great choice. It looks like he's sneaking up on someone to bash them over the head with that rifle.

Does Chapterhouse still exist? They're the ones who made the Manshees. I don't play 40k, and look how many Eldar I've painted in the last few days! And I've got more to come! I'm actually thinking about paring down my Eldar. Probably going to dump the Finecast and plastics and keep the metals. If they see any table action, it's going to be in small numbers anyway, so I might as well cut down on the number of them that I've got.

I didn't do too much today though, hobbywise. Mostly I spend the evening prepping and priming stuff. I did finally get to work on my test run for my Martian Orbital Fusiliers from Anvil Industry. I have to say, I'm very happy with how it turned out.

I think he'd make a good Mechanicus Explorator. I'll probably have him hanging out with the rest of my Skitarii and robots.

I also painted up this guy!

He's a Xin Warrior Monk from The Ion Age. He's pretty much the equivalent of a Terminator for the Xin faction. I got him as an impulse buy mostly to see how I like the sculpt. It turns out I like it a lot. They're chunky little figures for 15mm. I'll need to get four more to have a game legal unit though.

I know Chapterhouse is still online, but need to contact them to see if they are still in business. Looks like some of what they sold got reduced as FW made stuff for modding SM miniatures. I liked their slamander add ons, but now that FW makes it, I guess part of the court agreement was for them to cease if GW/FW made the accessories and such.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Anvil guys look good! Is that a Plasma rifle?

Xin warrior looks big for 15mm, that is heavy armor

Anvil calls that rifle a Tesla Disintegrator. I'd like to think it's basically just a fancy las rifle or human scaled Lightning Rifle like the Thallax have.

The Xin guy is supposed to be in heavy armor. The monks are pretty much analogous to Space Marine Terminators while the regular Xin troops, the Sanbao, are more or less equivalent to regular Space Marines.

I banged out a couple more figures tonight.

First, the plastic Commissar that came in my Start Collection Scions box.

The other figure was another Deadzone Mercenary. This time, it was Nastanza.

I had no clue what color to paint her, so I went with pretty much the same simplistic scheme I did on my Dark Eldar Kabalites. I think it works, despite its simplicity.

Whew. Been a busy weekend of painting. Seven Eldar completed, three robots completed, various 15mm work, and assembly, priming, and base coating of my Domitar. Busy.

My challenge for the month of September is going to be primarily Forgeworld, GW, and Mantic robots. So, Domitar, Mechanicus robots, and as many of my Mantic Dreadball robots as I can. In between working on the Domitar and the Mantic robots(which I'll photograph later), I've been working on some of my metal Eldar. I scrounged up four of my Fire Dragons and worked on a pair of Swooping Hawks.

I wanted to do something a bit different for the Swooping Hawks as I was getting tired of painting red from when I worked on the Banshees. So, I tried yellow. It makes the Hawks look more like Canaries, but I like how they turned out.

Now, the Fire Dragons, they were some of the very first GW figures I posted on here. Way back when I started them, I decided to go with a black scheme for their armor with some red highlights that faded into orangey yellow. Looking at the figure I'd done back then, I wasn't really digging how I had gone about it. So, I decided to retry it using a different technique. Here's the result.

I really like how they look now. Much better than my original attempt. I picked up an Eldrad over the weekend, so these guys will actually be pretty good practice for him.

I'm much happier with how the Fire Dragons look now than my original attempt. I think the darker colors look better on them than the orange and yellow of the official colors as well.

Here's more of the stuff I worked on over the weekend.

These three are part of my monthly challenge. These are part of my Ro-Tek Brutes DBX team, which I will be relabeling the Junktown Scrappers.

I wanted to paint them up quickly and I wanted them to look used, beat up, and rusted. The green bits I was hoping would look a bit more like worn off paint.

as for my 15mm stuff, I painted a wrecked Duxis Battlesuit.

a Duxis pilot. He's holding a survival kit in his left hand.

And some Nephilim Soldiers from Micropanzer Studios, which are more than a little based on the Geth.

Okay, that's probably the hardest part of my September pledge now finished. My Mechanicus now have a Domitar Battle Automata at their command.

And obligatory size comparison.

It's a bit deceiving. The photos make it look huge, but it's honestly only about as tall as a GI Joe. Still, I love the thing. As you can see, I decided not to go with the standard Stygies VIII colors. I thought going all black and red wouldn't look too good on this. I wanted to go with something similar to the studio colors, but when I tried some of my greys, they blended into the silver too much for my liking. So, I went with a bit of a compromise and went with a dark grey. I've added the Stygies red and black to his right pauldron so that he doesn't stand out too much from the rest.

Now, it's on to more Mantic 'bots and then I'll be doing the GW robots.

glad you like 'em. My one wish though would be to be better with cooler colors. For whatever reason, I can't seem to get them to work for me.

Well, tonight I decided to work on my SLAUGHTERPRIEST WITH HACKBLADE. He was kind of fun to paint and I've been wanting to paint some Khorne stuff anyway. I still need to apply some blood to him since, you know, he's a Khorne follower and all. But, I'll do that after I seal him.

I don't think the picture really does my paintjob justice. He looks pretty nice in person. But wow is this dude gigantic! He's probably at least twice the size of a regular GW human. Forget the Astartes program, worshiping Khorne apparently makes you superhuman.

Update time. This week I've been working on my GW Mechanicus Robots and Datasmith. I've finished the Datasmith and one of the robots, but I'm going to hold off on showing the robots until they're both done. For now, here's the Datasmith.

I'd picked up an Eldar Autarch a few weeks back from the FLGS. I finally got him finished.

I know, my paints on his backpack are sloppy. I was rushing. I'll clean them up.

Lastly, on an impulse buy, I saw a seller on Ebay selling the old metal Valerie Duval from Warzone, so I grabbed it. Not a bad looking figure for its age.

A whole bunch of great stuff again, Barz. The standouts for me are the Mechanicum and even more than that - the Eldar (all of them!) and also the paintwork on the Mantic Truck. The model there isn't super-amazing, but your paintjob on it is.

It's funny, my truck seems really popular. I got a lot of congrats on the paintjob when I showed it at the FLGS, too. One of the staff members was even showing it off to some of the car modelers.

I'm just about done with my September pledge. The Kastelans are both finished now.

You may notice that the arms are a tad longer than normal. I basically just lengthened the arms by combining the Power Fist parts with the gun arm parts. I think it looks better like this. Now they have access to the guns and their big punchy fists! All that's left now is the finish up the Dreadball Mechanites.

I also painted up this totally random set. I believe this was a Barbarian Princess from Celtos. I tried to get some pics of the girls holding the princess up, as well, but it's hard to make out their features.

Pretty random, huh?

It seems that the shield maidens holding her up are losing their ability to support her, either she is heavier than she looks(muscle mass), or she has been speech making too long from that shield they are supporting.

Castellans are looking cool as well, beefy robots!

I suppose I am due for a new Admech army shot. Maybe I'll do one before the weekend is over.

I finished up my September pledge though. The Dreadball Extreme "Junktown Scrappers" are all finished. Here's the final four 'bots.

I'd originally planned to do them and the Chromium Chargers, but I don't much feel like tracking all of them down, so I'll leave them be for now and call this month complete.

I also finished the remaining six Nephilim Troopers from Micropanzer, which gives me a full ten-man squad. Though, I do lack heavy and special weapons.

Well, I wound up seeing the Magnificent Seven, and that kind of ate my day. I didn't have any sunlight left to take an army shot, nor did I have any yesterday either. I will get an army shot sometime this week though!

In the meantime, I got two more 15mm mechs done.

I got a second Duxis Battlesuit, which I did up in the Brawler dual powerfist configuration.

And, I completed one of Micropanzer's Titanfall styled mechs.

Groovy mechs. The designs are interesting-- neither Gundam/Robotech influenced, nor Battletech/CAV.

Ion Age is definitely influenced by 40k more than anything. Their armors have a decidedly medieval look to them though. The Micropanzer mech is absolutely based on the designs from Titanfall. I've got some pilots as well that are clearly unofficial Titanfall miniatures to go with the mech.

Got some more stuff done today.

I finished the three final Space Marines from my Khurasan Miniatures set.

I painted up a couple of my Ion Age movement trays. This isn't the best picture for showing off the detail though. They have a nice rocky texture to them.

I got around to painting my Xin logistics robot that came as a freebie back when the range was first launched. I kept it pretty simple though.

I painted up the Micropanzer attack beast that came with my Micropanzer Tomorrow's War set. He's supposed to belong to the alien faction, but I have no problems fielding him with my humans.

It's a little hard to tell, but he's got horns on his head like a bull.

I also finished the hab unit I purchased from Ground Zero Games. This baby is solid metal and was quite the paint to put together. It's also pretty heavy. I kept it pretty simple to make painting faster.

In the 28mm field, I painted up my CCC Macine Gunner from MERCS.

I also painted up the RPG version of the Atilla from the Cybertronic Mutant Chronicles set.

Comparing this guy to pretty much every figure I got from the initial Warzone Kickstarter, the difference in quality is like night and day. This guy has such a clean, crisp cast! You almost wouldn't even think they were made by the same company the quality improved so much.

I think I've got that same MicroPanzer alien somewhere. Mine might be a yellowish color though.

I like all those Marines. Did that movement tray come pre- textured? Hadn't seen those. Don't you usually base all your guys on pennies as opposed to actual bases? And they still fit alright?

Yes, the movement trays are pre-textured. They also come in numerous sizes. The pennies I use fit just fine. Actually, 1 yen coins fit perfectly.

Micropanzer actually makes Marines with similar heavy EVA suits. They have them armed, unarmed, and zero-g poses.

Nothing impressive to update with tonight. I mostly finished my first challenge figure of the month.

Yoy may notice the gloss. That's from GW's Gloss Washes. The stuff really does create the same effect as the floor polish dip with none of the mess. Obviously she still needs to be dullcoated and based. I'm just going to wait on the dull coat until I've got the whole starter set finished. Do them all at the same time. The other two Ghulam will be my focus tomorrow night. Their uniform basecoats are already done, I just need to start work on everything else. I've got some other figures I'm working on on the side that I'll be posting as well.

Eh, I couldn't resist. Here's the Immortal, one of Cybertronic's hero characters from Warzone: Resurrection. I got this guy with the Kickstarter. So, since he's one of the early casts, the quality is just not very good. I'm curious if I purchased a newer one if the casting would be sharper and crisper?

Since he's one of those early casts, I'm not so miffed if the paintjob I gave him doesn't look all that amazing. It gets the job done.

I really like that cyber tropic hero. The colors work perfectly. The glowy bits are impressive. To me, the control panel on that docking cradle is also really impressive.

The glossy lady looks like she's ready to go clubbing with Kei$ha...

The little space marines have a great old school sci fi vibe with the glossy helmets. By contrast, the CCC gunner has a sort of washed out modern sci fi look that is nice, although I feel his gun doesn't quite live up to the rest of him in terms of color contrast. Perhaps I'm nudging you to paint more glossy, glowy bits.

Post by: Barzam

Eh, I prefer to generally keep the weapons fairly plain. I'm happy with how the rest of the CCC guy's uniform looks, though. I ought to try and do more this month if I have the time.

I got the first half of the first part of my monthly challenge done, now. All three Ghulam are totally finished. The old Haqq starter has three more figures to go.

Here's Ghulam girl, whom you have already seen. I may decide to paint her eyes someday.

Here's Solid Snake Ghulam. He's been a little converted. I did an arm swap between him and the other male Ghulam.

Here's the third Ghulam, who received Solid Snake's arms and I used the spare helmetted head from the Hussam Spec Ops.

The reason I converted him was because I actually had a duplicate of that guy that I got some time ago (and have posted on here before).
Here's a groupshot of all four of my Ghulam together.

Yeah, I know. The older one's base doesn't match. I may change the newbies eventually to match up since the rest of my Haqq have grey bases.

Aside from those, I painted up some random things as well.

Like a Bones Pathfinder Goblin that was kicking around with my spare bits.

The Siege of the Citadel Kickstarter got me wanting to work on Warzone minis, so that's what got me to do that Attila and The Immortal. I also even built and painted one of my Chasseurs!

I had to do a slight conversion, attaching his gun to his arm. A lot of the Chasseurs I got had the fingers on their left hands broken/missing. So, to counter that, I figured it'd work just as well directly attach the gun to his arm. What do you know? It looks just fine like that, too!

Lastly, I painted up a pair of long OOP Striking Scorpions for my Eldar.

I found these guys in the consignment case at one of my FLGS. Not a bad find, I think.

Heh, I just like more shineys. As your taste and painting skills are superior to mine, I will yield to your authority.

That Solid Snake guy looks great. Really makes me want to finish my (Catachan) Konami Contras. So many red (and blue) headbands. The conversion looks flawless to me, which is impressive since they are metal. The bone Scorpions also look sharp, especially with their glowy green jewels.

How much of the detail on that Warzone guy was painted on?

Barzam Paints random miniatures- 6/30/2020 Dusk Raider Thunder Warrior Sniper @ 2016/10/10 16:52:24

Post by: Barzam

The Scorpions will stay with me until I can possibly get my habds on the modern sculpts. The like the dreadlocked, Predator-esque look that they have a lot more. The problem is that I have yet to come across a set of them in metal at a reasonable price.

Solid Snake is very much intentional. CB have had a few "familiar"likenesses show up, like most of the cast of Lost as Acontecimento Regulars, X-Men as Nomad Morlocks, Deadpool as Senor Massacre, and Clint Eastwood as an Ariadna Ranger. I'm pretty sure all of the current Ariadna Highlanders are sporting celebrity likenesses as well.

Bob, you should totally finish those Catachans and pist them. That's a great idea for them.
As for the conversions I made, it wasn't anything difficult. Just an arm swap, really. The hardest part was actually the headswap for the guy with the helmet since I had to remove his original head. The Akali sniper I'd done took significantly more work.

The Chasseur's details are all sculpted on. I just blocked a couple spots out for the white. The problem with the Kickstarter Chasseurs isn't their lack of detail. The figures are actually very detailed. Their problem actually lies in their brittle fingers and the shallowness of their details. Most of mine have broken fingers on their open hands and a lot of the details just got obliterated when I applied paint. You wouldn't know it to look at the pic, but that Chasseur had some really fine, tiny pistons sculpted into his arms. They just disappeared when I added paint. It seems that Prodos rectified both issues when they resculpted the Chasseurs though. My RPG one has none of the issues the Kickstarter ones have.

I think it's just the perspective of the shot. They're not that huge. No worse than, say, the Destroid Phalanx. I think there's guns mounted on them as well, so they're bulking the pods up a bit.

I'm nearly done with my old Haqqislam starter box. All that's really left to do with the final three figures is paint their bases and dull coat them. Then I'll be halfway through this month's challenge!

Okay, finished up the previous Haqqislam starter set tonight.

Here's the retouched Ghulam with their redone bases and eyes added to the female one.

Here's the Janissary, Hunzakut, and Naffatun.

This now gives me 7 Naffatun with a mixture of heavy and light flamers and five Ghulam with an additional three more in the Red Veil box. I've also recently purchased the new Bashi Bazouk and the old Tuareg hacker who I will use as a medic.

I also painted a Warzone Heretic. I don't recall ever seeing this figure before though. She works great as a random civvie. Too bad my camera washed out the details on her clothes.

I completed a Capitol Ranger Captain from Warzone. I probably should have taken the shot from a lower angle.

I painted up a Wraithguard, which BobtheInquisitor should recognize.

I did another Cybertronic Chasseur. I think he's supposed to have some kind of plasma rifle.

And lastly, I painted a Haqqislam Tuareg, which despite being a hacker model, will probably act as my army's primary medic.

I really like that wraithguard. If you're going to paint them all so nicely, I'll have to try to find the rest of my metal Eldar so you can have them.

The ranger and chasseur both look badass. The tuareg looks cool, too. His gun looks white and red, which made me think it was an in-universe toy. The goggles really pop.

Hey, if you want to pass your old metal Eldar on to me, I'd certainly be happy to take them off your hands.

Looking back at the pic, the Tuareg's gun does almost look like a Nerf gun. It's actually gray and brown, but it really does look white and sort of orangish. I suppose I might have to use a darker gray on the next batch.

Tonight, I painted the new Bashi-Bazouk. I love the design of this guy and knew I'd buy him as soon as I saw the artwork. I just hope I did him justice with my paintjob. I was attempting to keep it somewhat similar to Giraldez's. He actually retains all of the colors of my other Haqq models, but the tan armor bits really brighten him up and make him stand out among the others. I suppose that's fitting though, since a Bashi-Bazouk is a mercenary and wouldn't match up with the rest of the troops he'd be serving beside.

The freehand was actually kind of fun to do on him. I think I should've waited until after I applied the washes though, since they muddied the colors a bit.

Took a quick break from Infinity. Painted a MERCS figure. This guy is the old USCR Booster. Not many people were a fan of this figure.

I was tempted to model him actually kicking in a door, but I figured the door debris would've really obstructed him and would look kind of weird on the table.

The other figure I painted up is from the Alien Assimilation Kickstarter. This is one of the Alien Hunter figures, which is clearly influenced by the Weyland Yutani troops from Alien 3. This figure was also supplied to me by BobtheInquisitor.

His eyes didn't come out as well as I would've liked, but I'm happy enough with the overall results. I'm most likely going to work on some more Cybertronic tomorrow, so no Infinity.

Highlord Tamburlaine should recognize tongiht's figure. This is the Lady of War, which is clearly meant to be a female Khorne Champion. Nice figure. The only downside would be that she isn't as massive as the official Khorne figures. If she's a Champion of Khorne though, and she's that tiny compared to the guys, she must be one hell of a fighter.

The other figure I finished tonight is probably less exciting, since I don't think many people on here like 15mm. This guy is a Prang Raider with an HMG. He's from the Ion Age line and was pretty much an impulse buy to go along with last month's freebie, which was a Prang Ambassador. Apparently the Prang faction is split into two groups, the Prang Army, which is on friendly terms with the humans and officially represent the Prang government, and the Prang Raiders, who are a bunch of space pirates at odds with humanity and are openly antagonistic with the Prang government. The Raiders have a sort of hodge-podge look to their gear, much of which is pretty beat up looking. I think they'd be great for some post-apoc mutants.

Finished up one of the three Cybertronic figures on my table tonight. This is the Cuirassier from the Kickstarter starter set. Though, I think the retail versions are pretty much the exact same figure.

I like the design of the figure, but the pose sucks hard. I did some reposing on him and even managed to do a little sculpting to repose the left arm. I'm happier with this pose, but this figure needs to be redone.

I also got probably 80% of the work done on the Chasseur that comes in the Cybertronic RPG set. Figured I'd post a WIP picture of him.

This sculpt is so much sharper than my Kickstarter Chasseurs. No broken fingers or smudgy details, either. In order to make him stand out more from the others, I've opted for a more decayed look to his skin. Of course, all of the highlighting and layers I did on his skin don't show up in the pic. The skin actually looks quite good in person. I also opted to paint his bald head as a full helmet just to make him look more unique. He should be done tomorrow.

The Chasseur is actually named! His name is Dick Hawkins. I'm very pleased with how he turned out, too.

The other character in the RPG set is a Dr. Diana clone. I believe this is the third iteration of her and her clones. Word of note with this mini, those servo arms are very thin and spindly and break very easily.

Here's a few more, using Infinity figures this time.

Alguacile

Ghulam

Roy made her face look really funny, too.

Celestial Guard

Sogarat

I went with filters that make them look less abstract and more smoothed out. I like how the filters look on them. There's a thread on the official forums that did this and that's what influenced me to try it out.

I've been spending this week trying to get over my jet-lag, which has been making me really tired after I get home. Because of that and a lack of certain goods I need, like glue and primer, I haven't been getting much work done this week. But, that isn't to say that I haven't gotten anything done. I painted three Boomers and a 15mm battlesuit!

And yes, I mean THOSE Boomers.

First up is a BU-55C Combat Boomer with deployed laser cannon.

Next, a BU-55C Combat Boomer with deployed thrusters.

And third, we have one that I painted to look like the BU-99 Super Boomer.

My pictures don't do them justice. The blue ones are a nice metallic blue and the red is a glossy, metallic red. They look much nicer in person.

For those interested in having proper Bubblegum Crisis miniatures, these, along with the Knight Sabers, AD Police, and Genom Executives as well as Deunan and Briarios from Appleseed and the Dirty Pair are all produced officially by Ground Zero Games. They're all still available, too. The only catch is, they're actually 25mm scaled, so they're kind of small and they all have integral bases. The figures are all quite old as well, so some of the sculpts are probably not up to modern standards. Still, the fact that they exist and they're officially licensed is pretty damn cool.

The other thing I worked on this week is a Havelock Battlesuit from The Ion Age.

The Havelock is a support armor used by the Muster, which are sort of like the Imperial Guard of the Ion Age universe. This particular loadout includes a dual machinegun for anti-infantry purposes and a missile launcher for anti-armor. I believe it's stats also include it's left arm for punching, but I don't think that small gun mounted on back of the hand actually has any stats.

So it sounds like we need to make a hobby run this weekend?

I'm in need of a few base brushes since I keep picking up those crappy Testers ones at Michaels at a super steep discount.

Those boomers sure got painted up quick. Need a Knight Sabers team to fight them.

No Knight Sabres for me. I don't think I'd be able to get their colors right. The Boomers were easy and, if it weren't for jet-lag, I'd have had them done within a single night. They're just silver with layers of blue glaze for the blue ones and Blood For The Blood God for the red one.

I painted two more figures from that GZG order tonight. These guys are from their old 25mm Stargrunt line. They're Legionnaires from the Federated States of Europa. They'll be joining my small collection of Stargrunt figures on me desk at work.

It's a little hard to tell, but the guy on the right is supposed to have his visor open. He's got facial features sculpted in there, but they're hard to see. These guys are fun little figures though. Just one more 25mm figure from this order to go now, and that's a Eurasian Solar Union power armor.

If the weapons were a bit bigger, they make decent folks from worlds where they are naturally smaller than the "heroic" 28mm and 32mm sized people.

I like my knight sabers but they're 25mm so they don't really scale with anything else I have.

Well, back to somewhat more normal figures. These are 28mm scaled, at least. I decided to work on a couple figures that've been sitting around unpainted for quite some time. Here's the Fire dragon's Exarch, all finished up. This now completes all of my Fire Dragons!

And here's an American Airborne officer from AEWWII. This guy is actually a double for me. I have one of the US army boxes, which includes this guy. But, like many of the AEWWII figures, he has extra parts, so I figured, back when I got him, I'd do both builds.

The other build has an bare head with no sunglasses, and I think has a cigar in his mouth, a different rifle, and the left hand is carrying a radio. Since I already have a set of Airborne that I've already done, and a power armor, I figure this guy can lead them.

It's funny, both figures I painted tonight are in pretty much the exact same pose.

I've been trying to paint my Eldar in more non-traditional colors ever since I started buying them. It isn't often you see Fire Dragons in a dark scheme and I think it's a look that really suits them. I still haven't decided how I want to paint my lone Warp Spider though.

Here's the last 25mm Stargrunt figure from my previous Ground Zero Games order. This is a Eurasian Solar Union Power Armor.

The ESU, as far as I can tell, are Space Russians. The Federated States of Europa are Space French, and the Neu-Swabian League are Space Germans. These old 25mm figures have been fun to paint. I've actually based its colors on the box art for the old Halk Sovat power armor model kit from Dorvack. I feel like I could've done a better job on the camouflage bits though. I'm not especially enthused with how my attempt to mimic that Dorvack color scheme came out, but for something that's just going to sit on my desk at work, I think it's fine. Interestingly, GZG have been resculpting a lot of thier 15mm stargrunt lines. While the old ESU suits in 15mm used to look like this, the new ones most certainly do not. Their new designs look to be channeling a combination of the K-Suits from Bubblegum Crisis and the Studio Nue designs of the Starship Troopers power armors. I'd love to see that new design realized in a larger scale.

First thing I thought of upon looking at that color scheme was Dorvack. Go figure.

You have any of the newer 15mm versions of those suits? Your mention of them channeling Bubblegum Crisis and Starship Troopers makes them sound quite appealing.

Well, for some reason, alongside my Red Veil minis, I started working on one of the EIC figures from Mercs Recon. What's EIC? East India Company. They're the Megacorp that represents... well, India. This faction really grew on me due to their rather unusual, blocky designs. I'm kind of thinking I might use them for Rogue Stars as well. Here's the first of them, the Shock Trooper, who is basically the team's medic.

There's three of these skinnier figures in the faction and I think they're actually supposed to be female. As you can see, the cast isn't the best. The mold lines were really hard to clear away and this was about as good as I was able to do. Hers is also probably the softest in terms of detail. The male models look much sharper. I'll probably get to them soon as I work on Red Veil.

I've got most of the Haqqislam portion of Red Veil finished now. Just two more figures to go. I figure I can share my progress now.

first up, the Zhayedan, who is quickly becoming my favorite of the set. His stance is really wide and I didn't feel like cutting off his slot tab, so I just kind of extended the base a bit withe some rubble. Highlord Tamburlaine was bugged to no end by that.

Here's Ghulam no. 1

Ghulam no. 2, who happens to be in the exact same pose as the guy I kitbashed last month.

Ghulam 3

and lastly, the Al Fasid, whose name spelling and overall design went through a significant change. I decided not to add camouflage to him, like I did my old Ahl Fassed models. I think I like how the cleaner armor looks more.

I've also been painting some other stuff, lately. This is the Gasmask Girl from This is Not a Test. World's End Publishing had Brother Vinni sculpt her. The guy's nudes are pretty tasteless, but his clothed figures really are quite good. Too bad I nearly ruined her by trying to paint her eyes. What you see is "good enough." It took several tries just to get them to an acceptable level.

Finally, we have another member of the East India Company. This guy is their Demolitions trooper. Nothing about him says Demolitions, but whatever. The same can be said for pretty much all of their classes except the Leader, Sniper, and the Heavy.

I'm very pleased with how her turned out. It helps that he has a sharper case than the Shock Trooper. I am going to have to redo his pauldrons though so that the EIC logo stands out better and to better match their artwork.

Instead of finishing my Haqqislam, I wound up painting another EIC member. Apparently, the EIC's troops are called the Rakshasa. This guy is the Rakshasa's Breacher.

I noticed a few funky details on him as I was working on him. One, he appears to have an artificial leg. The right leg's details were completely different from the details on any of the other team members. He must've had some kind of mishap with his breaching charges, similar to the House 9 Demolitions guy. Two, his arms don't have the fabric covers over the biceps. His upper arms are oddly thin and have artificial muscle fibers over them. Kind of makes me think he might be missing his arms, too. Three, I don't know what that thing in his hands is. I don't think it's a pistol, since it looks nothing like the ones the Shock Trooper carries. It could be a dispenser for his breaching gel, but it doesn't look like the containers the other factions carry. I don't know what that thing is.

Well, that's half the team done, now. I just have the Leader, Engineer, and Sniper left to do. Until I get the missing guys from Megacon, anyway. I have three of the four remaining units on their way. I'll probably have to get that last guy just to complete the team. I'm kind of leaning towards using the Rakshasa as my team for Rogue Stars as well. They're funky enough, they ought to fit right in.

I think you are right regrding the limbs of the breacher, as for the pistol like object he hols, I saw his rifle on his hip for
quick access. I think he is holding a cutting torch, it has a gas bottle on it, dangerous place for the fuel for the torch.

Either that, or it is a form of tranquilizer gun, but I think torch or cutter is what it really is.

Minis look good as always, and the Haqqislam came out really nice!

Brother Vinni does nice work indeed,,,,especially when fully clothed his beauties be.

I did check his stat card. It shows the cylindrical Breaching Gel container, not this pistol thing. I'm pretty certain the pistol is supposed to be the Breaching Gel though.

Anyway, back to working on the stuff I'm supposed to be working on. However, I didn't do too much work on the remaining Haqqislam figures. I just paitned their pants. Exciting, right? Instead, I started on the first of the Yu Jing half of the box. To start, I figured I'd go with their most impressing looking figure, the Hsien Immortal. I'd intended to paint him in the white and orange scheme I've used on previous Imperial Security Services figures, but then I'd seen someone online trying to do an ISS army using the Shen Ce scheme on their uniforms. If you don't have the Human Sphere book, the Shen Ce scheme is an official alternate color scheme for Yu Jing's Imperial Security Services for use in night operations. The uniform gained infamy when the ISS was sent in to put down a riot by factory workers. Word is they were particularly vicious and cruel in putting down the riots and since then, this uniform has been something of a psychological tool. When you see the ISS wearing the Shen Ce uniform, gack is about to go down.

I really tried to be thorough and take my time on him, doing highlights and blending. Since I don't really have a proper photo area or decent lighting though, of course you can't see most of the work I did. In person, his armor looks much darker, more like the black I used on my Eldar Fire Dragons and the greenish-grey I used on his face and visor stand out much better. The picture really doesn't do the figure justice.

I got the Tuareg done Saturday night. I'm now halfway through my Red Veil box. If I don't succeed in finishing the whole thing, I'll at least have met my minimum figure goal.

I had a little bit of trouble with her. She's supposed to be looking through the scope of her rifle, but try as I might, I could not get the right arm to mount properly. It's the same issue I had with the Nisses in Ice Storm. Except in her case, instead of looking through her scope, she's looking along the side of her gun. Arg. Well, at least they're done now. I'm going to work on some more EIC and then Yu Jing. I've got most of the Yu Jing models assembled and primed now.

On the side, I painted up some 15mm items from Ion Age. For some reason, the Xin Warrior Monks operate in groups of five, but Alternative Armies only sells them in groups of three. It's odd. So, in anticipation of getting a full set, I've slowly been working on the other two needed for the legal squad. The first had already been finished for a while, but tonight I finished the second.

Also on the side, I painted up my other Ion Age building. This one is called a Block House. I like that they designed a lot of their buildings to be modular, so you can either have them stand alone, or you can set them up together. There's also connecting hallways you can get to really spread out your bases.

My little 15mm colony base is slowly growing.

I took a little side trip today and instead of working on the Yu Jing troops, I worked on some stretch goals. Namely, finishing up the mercs part of the Unnamed Assimilation expansion from MERCS: Recon, which is the EIC expansion. I completed the Leader and the Engineer tonight. All that's left to finish up that box is to paint the two civvies. Since the Sniper, Assimilator, Heavy, Booster, and Pathfinder weren't actually part of the expansion, I'll be calling this stretch goal completely finished once those civvies are done.

Here's the Engineer.

From what her character board shows, she basically plays the same role as the Breacher. I'm not really sure what reason there would be to take one over the other. Both have abilities that affect the Breach and Clear. Kind of makes me wonder if their abilities are different in the tabletop game.

Here's the Leader

You can't see it, but he has some kind of cybernetic implant or targeting monocle of some kind on the left side of his face.

Here's the whole team from the Unnamed Assimilation box.

I'm kind of thinking I might try to use them in Rogue Stars when it comes out. They've got a pretty unique look to them and the yellow armor certainly will give them a strong presence on the tabletop. It should be fairly easy to stat them according to WYSIWYG as well.

Looking good Barzam! notice that bases make the figures float above the actual ground level, making the figs seem taller than the door? Always have to remember the base would not be under the feet, and thus place the minis at the "ground level" of the terrain and make them more fitting under the door tops.

I think it is simething terrain amkers forget abouyt when making their doors, they forget the 2-3mm added height the base adds to minis.

Thanks Shas. Actually, I think the door being too small is just a trick of the angle. The doorway is actually taller than both figures. Now the bases though, those won't be fitting through the doors.

Today's actually been pretty productive. I got four figures done today! I painted an Afterlife figure and completed all three Zhanshis from Red Veil.

Here's the Afterlife figure.

I may need to retake that since he looks a little dark.

Here's the Zhanshis.

Here's no. 1, with his flowing locks

You can't even see it, but the guy's got a beard.

Here's Zhanshi 2. I'm not sure what happened with her face. I don't know why it came out looking so soft. I used thinned paints and everything.

And here's Zhanshi 3.

I know, their faces came out looking oddly soft and I didn't bother painting their eyes. I'm not planning on changing that, either. I'm just glad they're done and out of the way. I'm probably going to start the Tiger Soldier tonight.

Low an dbehold, I actually completed a fifth figure today! While getting the base whites onto the Tiger Soldier, I also worked some on a Commando Armiger I've had from Heavy Gear. Since its colors were so simple, it painted up nice and quick.

Like my others, I'll probably end up using it in 15mm games.

I decided to forgo the green scheme I'd used on the new sculpt Shotgun Tiger Soldier and instead went back to how I'd painted my three original Tiger Soldiers, using the same white and black scheme I've used with the rest of my basic Yu Jing troops.

Oooh, tiger soldier turned out very well. I may borrow the idea of white armor for my Yu Jing, which will come in the red veil box. Not starting the faction, but just want some cool minis to paint, and get those nice new Haqq minis (and that excellent ninja).

Since you have the Yu Jing, how are they to assemble and paint? I've seen some, erm, well, whining about the assembly.

I was thinking long and hard about whether I wanted to go through with the white armor for the Tiger Soldier. My previous one, like I said, I had done in green armor. I really like how the green looks on them, too.

As far as assembly goes, I had only a few minor issues. Issues like the Tuareg's arm not mounting right, or off hands not matching up with their respective arms. Nothing major that you wouldn't be likely to encounter on regular releases. Although, for some reason, tonight I was having issues with my glue bonding. I think that's more due to the weather than the minis though.

Today I painted the Zuyong w/ MULTI Rifle.

I also assembled the Ninja and the Yuan-Yuan. Just those two left and then I'll have met my challenge.

White does look good for Yu Jing and I feel it fits them better than the official yellow. But, it's an absolute pain in the butt to paint. I just finished the final two figures from Red Veil. No more painting white for a bit, I hope. This also means I've achieved my goal and beat this month's challenge. I completed the full Red Veil boxed set!

Here's the final Yu Jing figure, the box exclusive Ninja. Who doesn't exist. Shhh.

So, you'll notice right away, I did not go for the black or dark scheme that most people have given her. I wanted to do something different, so I looked for inspriation from an old PS2 game I enjoyed, Night Shade. Nightshade was the 2003 sequel to the insufferably hard PS2 Shinobi game. Hibana was the main protagonist, a kunoichi with a futuristic ninja suit. Her suit was red and white, which just so happens to be the colors for the JSA in Infinity. I used her costume design as inspiration for the Ninja's colors, mostly keeping the same scheme and patterns and changing the areas where it was needed. I'm pretty pleased with the results.

Here's the other figure, the preorder exlusive Yuan-Yuan.

For him, I decided to use Boba Fett as inspiration. For some reason, I felt that the scheme would suit a space pirate. If I ever get the other Yuan-Yuans, I'll have to give them all unique color schemes.

Tiger troops looking unified and good, Interesting the original was a foot slogger, the more modern version are jump troops.

Zhuyong looks beefy, nice scheme on him.

We shall refer to her as archery girl, also looks great! the white with red seems fitting.

Piratical Yuan-yuan with the flight pack looks good in the darker t medium colors!

Awesome collection of other minis too, your throughput continues to be both steady and prodigious.

Thanks. It feels good to be done with a big box set like Red Veil. Noq that I'm done, I might even try playing it! My productivity is going to drop sharply though. I'll be traveling again. I'm goinf to Japan for about a week to visit family. Once I'm back though, I'l be starting my December challenge. For December, my goal will be to paint as many Infinity miniatures as I can. I got a lot when I had Miniature Market ship my orders that had been on hold and they seriously beefed up my Pile 'O Shame. I also want to complete my EIC and paint a huge vehicle I got for Dystopian Wars. So, next month looks to be busy.

A pile of great Infinity and Mercs stuff. I don't know jack about the figures themselves, but they certainly look very effective. I think my favourite of them is the pink and white-armoured archer lady. Looks a little like a hybrid of a Destiny Titan firing off the Hunter's Void Arrow special. Or a compound bow. :p

Well, I'm a bit behind, this month. I've got five Infinity figures primed and ready for paint though! My schedule was thrown off by a trip back to Nagoya to visit my brother. I was able to get back to work once I got back though.

On Friday, I started and finished another Rakshasa from the EIC. This time, the Booster. If I understand correctly, Boosters basically pump themselves up with combat stims. For whatever reason, Megacon didn't feel the need to sculpt the combat drugs onto him, like they have for other factions. Instead, they made him nearly identical to the Pathfinder.

Here's the Booster.

I know my hobby schedule is going to be further thrown off though. On Sunday the 11th, I got a dog! I've been wanting my own dog since I moved out three years ago and today it happened.

Here's my new buddy, Penelope.

Penelope, like Rat-Man-Do, is a Rat Terrier mix. She's 5 years old, which makes her older than Ratty and she's a little sausage. So, I'm going to have to work on trimming down her waistline (and hopefully mine as well while we're at it). She's was an owner surrender, so she seems to be housebroken and she's a total lapdog. All day she's been trying to just lay in my lap and get pet. Hopefully she's well past her destructive phase.

Cool, I'm not a huge dog person but having an animal around can be pretty nice. Especially if they're calm and don't eat miniatures.

Cool booster too.

Looks like the mods pulled my pic of Penelope. Tonight I'm going to attempt to get some painting time in, if Penelope will let me. I'll probably start with an Aquila Guard since that will be an easier scheme to work with.

The great news is, Penelope is letting me paint! So I was able to start the Aquila Guard, Garuda Tacbot, and Asawira that were all in my queue. I also painted a Death Guard for some reason.

So, random Death Guard, who looks way filthier in person than he does here.

And the Asawira

Much as I like this guy's armor design, he could really stand a resculpt. He's super thin. Hopefully whenever they get around to updating these guys, they'll keep the design and just bulk them out.

I'm three figures into my challenge now. Just completed two tonight! Whereas last time it was a Haqqislam addition, this time it's PanO. Specifically Neoterran.

First is the Aquila Guard.

I already had the MULTI Rifle version, figured I should get the other.

Second is the Garuda Tacbot

This is technically the HMG version, but honestly, that gun arm could be anything. So, I'll proxy him for whatever option I need, assuming he ever gets used. This figure is actually not a PanO model. With some sectorials, ALEPH provides troops. PanO's Neoterran sectorial gets to use Garudas, which are actually their only available airborne unit. Yu Jing gets these guys too. I'd asked Highlord Tamburlaine which faction's colors to use, and he said PanO, so this Garuda got a Neoterran color scheme to show his allegiance.

Well, the base goal for the month has been met. I finished the final two figures for the month, the Kaauri Sentinels.

What are they? They're some kind of bio-engineered species created by the Tohaa to be used as disposable soldiers in Infinity. I think there's supposed to be some bit about them being based on ancient mythological guardian deities or something, but really, they're just a slave species created to die on the behalf of the Tohaa. The Tohaa are kind of fethed up when you stop to think about what they do.

I feel like I've been neglecting my plog. It looks like I'll be able to squeeze in another Infinity figure before the month is done. I'm working on a Squalo right now, but I suspect I won't finish before the end of the month. So, it looks like my total will be 6 Infinity figures for December. Most likely, I will not be participating in the next Tale of Painters challenge.

Here's tonight's completed Infinity figure (and one I've been wanting for a while), the Emergency Services 112 aka the Combat Fireman aka awesome Zombie Apocalypse survivor.

Dude's got a pistol, a fireaxe, body armor, an oxygen mask, and a sawed-off shotgun. I think he'll be able to handle himself.

I painted yet another Rakshasa from the EIC. This time, it's the Pathfinder. For whatever reason, he's in nearly the same pose as the Booster. I see myself easily confusing these two if they're ever on the board together.

Also from MERCS, I did a quick and dirty paintjob on one of the Civvies that comes in the EIC expansion box.

Lastly, I painted my Goliath Battlesuit from Afterlife. This one was a bit time consuming, hence why I haven't been posting much lately. It's hard to see in the pics, but there's actually several different shades of gray used on this thing. I'm actually pretty happy with the results.

Pretty down to the wire, but I managed to get the TAG done before the end of the month/year!

Here's the PanOceania Squalo, Armored Cavalry TAG. I've painted it to match up with my Neoterran troops.

And, because I own the original Armored Cavalry model, here's how the new one compares to the old, military surplus model.

There's just a bit of a size and sculpt difference between the two.

Thanks. Hope you had a good new year, JoeRugby.

My first figures of the new year! I painted up yet another Rakshasa. This time, it's the Sniper. Just two to go and I'll have the entire faction done!

Highlord Tamburlaine had provided me with a sprue of the plastic Concord infantry from Beyond the Gates of Antares. I've got a few sets of them in metal that I haven't gotten to yet, so I figured I'd give a couple of the plastics a test run. After much deliberation, I decided to go with a cooler color scheme, something more urban friendly and low-vis. I know the lights and visors don't really fit that, but whatever. They needed a bit of extra color. I'll be transferring these colors over to the rest of my Concord whenever I get around to them.

Tonight sees three figures brought to completion. Two snipers from MERCS and 1 Orc Marauder from Deadzone. The Marauder's been sitting on my table unpainted for a LOOOOONG time. I figured I should just bite the bullet and actually paint the guy.

Here's the Orc.

Now, in MERCS, there's a faction called the FCC, which is basically a number of loosely affiliated terrorist groups from the abandoned "Lost Margins" that have pooled their resources together to form relatively effective fighting forces. They're organized into Houses, of which two have been made, House 4 and House 9. During the Recon Kickstarter, House 4 was included for free while House 9 was a paid add-on. However, several House 9 figures wound up being thrown in as freebies. These were the Saboteur (which I've already painted and posted) and the Sniper. For the hell of it, I decided to paint both snipers this week.

Here's the House 4 Sniper.

He's pretty plain, really. He doesn't have the hodge-podge post apocalyptic raider look that the rest of the FCC guys have.

Here's the House 9 Sniper

Yeah, I'm not entirely sure how this guy is a sniper. That gun has no scope and looks more like a shotgun. He is supposed to be their sniper though.

I actually like Mantic's Deadzone Marauders. The more military look to them goes a long way towards making them feel like the professional soldiers they're supposed to be. Way back when I started them, I wanted to go for more of an Afrika Korps look than the official Blood Axe looking colors. With tge kepis they're wearing, I though it would suit them better. I'm actually disappointed that they didn't do a new plastic sprue in the same style for Warpath.

I liked just about all of the models in Deadzone. The only ones that really didn't do much for me were the Rebs. That could have something to do with them having the worst casts of my batch, though. I did really like the Marauders. Lots of character to them.

For the last couple of days, I've been working on some power armored figures. My brother got me some Konflikt '47 Soviets for Christmas, among other things and I picked up some Germans when I was last at Brookhurst. I figured, why not work on them all together?

Here's the Soviet Heavy Infantry.

They're a little doffy, but I love the weapons. Power claws and machine guns with grenade launchers. These things would be real nasty to encounter in the streets of Stalingrad.

Here's the German Heavy Infantry (w/ MG-34s)

Official colors for them have them in desert yellow. The MG-34s though gave me Panzer Cop vibes, so I went with a menacing black. The guy on the left got a headswap with a West Wind gasmask head. These are pretty nice figures. I just wish the shading and gradients showed up in the pics. Plus, they look much more black in person than they do in these pics.

Lastly, I had backed Slap Miniatures' Space Knights Kickstarter. They're pretty much just 15mm not-Space Marines and not-Terminators. My plan is to eventually try and use them to play Ion Age. My plan here was just to do a test run on my colors with three of the four types of troops I got.

The Kickstarter had four types of troops: Bolter, Assault, Support, and Terminator. I should have about twenty guys all together, so I'll split them into fireteams of five with three bolters, one support, and one assault type acting as a Sgt. I'll be working on the other three troopers next as well as some other 15mm figures. After that, probably back to MERCS.

Been busy this past week. Got more work done on tiny people, painted another figure that's been sitting around unfinished, and painted a another figure that's been primed for a few weeks.

I finished the remaining three Space Knights from my first squad.

and the team together.

I painted up some scientists from Khurasan Minis. I'll need to get the fleeing scientists he makes as well.

Gabbed a couple of Xin riflemen, because I've been neglecting them.

And then, there's a couple of Heavy Gear figures I'm been dragging my feet on. First is this Desert Viper who has been sitting on my desk mostly finished for months. Decided to get him done.

His partner that came with him is still not finished though.

The other Heavy Gear figure I painted was a Crusader IV, from the Peace River faction. It's a somewhat bigger unit from the Peace River Defense Force. I don't know too much about this faction beyond the fact that their Gears seem to be derived from Northern designs. They share a similar blocky aesthetic.

As Heave Gear minis that I own go, this guy's one of the chunkier ones. The blockier designs generally don't do a whole lot more me, but I do really like this one. I've been contemplating selling off a few of my HG minis, but I'm thinking I'll keep this one.

This guy was painted along with the group of minis I did yesterday. I just hadn't finished him until tonight.

He's a Micropanzer figure. Don't recall which faction. SAS, I think? Doesn't really matter though.

I also finished up a Dystopian Wars vehicle, of all things! Yes, I actually still have Dystopian Wars kits that need painting. This is the Archimedes Heavy Walker for the Covenant of Antarctica.

It's actually got quite a few weapons on it. Big pincer claws on the front, the white things on top are rockets, a big laser cannon on top, a shell firing cannon on its underside, and little lasers all over. This kit is resin and metal, with the body and big cannons being resin and the legs and arms in metal. The metal on the legs is super bendy. Like, so bendy that I don't think they'll actually be able to hold up the things body. I don't think I've had a metal kit that bent so easily.

Okay, these three took me way too long to do, considering their very simple paintjobs. For whatever reason, they took me the entirety of last week to paint. But, they're done now. i present, the Enhanced Machinators from Cybertronic!

#1

#2

and minigun toting #3

I like these guys. They're so much more brutal looking than the Kickstarter versions. They're also more in line with the lineart that was presented during the Kickstarter. The details on them are very sharp and the casting was really good. A neat aspect of these figures is that each one is only 2 parts. There's also an option to arm one with a minigun, which you can see I went for. Otherwise, you can have all three carrying rifles. For a bit of added individuality for them, I decided to give each one differently colored cables. There's a lot of cables sculpted on these three.

Did I mention these guys are kind of big? They're kind of big. Here's how they match up to a regular Imperial guard type figure.

Yeah, they kind of tower of a regular person. I have a set of the Mk. IX Machinators as well and they're also fairly big, but not as tall or bulky as these guys. I'll get to them soonish, hopefully. Got some other stuff to attend to before them.

Fifty wanted more Afterlife. So, here's an Afterlife figure, a Republic Grenadier with Rocket Launcher.

That finishes up the figures I purchased in England. Yay!

I also finished the remaining two Rakshasa from the East India Company.

Heavy Weapon Guy

Their flagship unit, the Assimilator.

The Assimilator seems largely useless in Recon, but in tabletop, I believe he needs to be on the table to grant their assimilation bonus to the EIC. From what I've read, it allows them to use enemy tech to buff their troops. More likely, I'll never use him for either game he was intended for and instead I'll probably use him in Rogue Stars. I'm already figuring he'll be statted as having a cybernetic right arm with integrated laser rifle, a power fist, and light power armor. That's probably going to wind up being an XP sink though.

The little dudes and afterlife are sweet, up to your usual standards, but those teminator/necron/terminators...are sweet. I kinda want those, and this is during a time in my life when at least 90% of all hobby things make me go 'meh'. Those are cool, kinda like necron/terminator terminators... in a space marine sense, the heavy armor version. Looks like something terrifying to import into TNT or other semi-modern/near future games.

Hey, you know what color sucks to paint? Orange! Guess what color I've been painting!

This is a command type Bulldog Truck from Ground Zero Games' Stargrunt range. I'd purchased it to go along with their Moongrunt figures (such as the one pictured) as it has a nice space exploration-y vibe to it. I was tempted to put NASA markings on it, but I figured if I left them off, I could use it as an objective or something for any faction. This thing is a heft little kit. Solid metal, all the way. Did I mention it's also multipart? Yeah, this thing is a full on, solid metal kit. The mold lines on the trailer and wheels weren't too fun to deal with though. I managed to get most of them off, but you can still see their remnants if you look closely. Regardless of my so-so job at removing mold lines, I like this truck a lot. I'm tempted to get more of GZG's civvie vehicles and I really want to get their actual Moongrunt vehicles. I mean, who doesn't want an armed lunar rover?

I've got a bit of Mantic love for you tonight. When he was originally shown, I wasn't all that impressed with Hund's artwork. But, I later saw someone paint him up in a red urban camo scheme and though he actually looked really cool (sorry, whoever that was. I totally forgot who did that) and I decided I would eventually need to correct my error in judgement and purchase him for myself.

Yeah, I pretty much tried to copy that red urban camo scheme from memory. I have no clue how good of a copy I did, but I'm happy enough with the results. There's three things that surprised me about this guy when I got him in hand. First, the guy has optional bits! He has an alternate unmasked head (looks reptillian) and optional upper arms with some very big blades. Second, this guy had no integral base or peg to actually mount him onto the base. That was kind of a pain. Third, the guy is kind of big. Look how he compares to my Treitak.

I'd say he's pretty on par with the new sculpt Morats. He's easily big enough to throw down with one in hand to hand.

I finally decided to buckle down and paint my Iraqi Republican Guards. I've had them sitting around since way back when I posted my Pile 'O Shame pics. I've just never had the desire to actually get them painted since I didn't really have any actual use for them. They were total impulse buys. But, they're done now and I can move on to other stuff.

RPG guy

Shooting guy

Standing guy

Running guy

full squad with commander

I believe the company that made these figures was called Devil Dog Productions and the line they were from was called Dogs of War. Unfortunately, I've not really been able to find out much information on the company or the line. Brookhurst Hobbies- where I got them all- has a few other figures, mostly US Marines and I believe some modern British were made as well. Beyond that, I have no clue what other figures have been made. The company went under years ago and as far as I know, nobody purchased the molds. Most of the figures I've seen are single piece casts. Interestingly, the Iraqis all had separate heads, which is something I haven't seen on any of the other figures. The three guys with AKs and the officer are all single piece aside from the heads. The RPG guy was actually a multipart figure. He had options for the RPG, an AK, and two different RPKs. I figured the RPG would be the more interesting choice. The figures are very bulbous and very heroically proportioned, as you can see. I'm not actually sure if I like these figures or not, now that I have them painted. My plan was to sell them once they were painted, but my dad expressed some interest in them, so I'll give them to him instead.

While I was working on the Iraqis, I also grabbed some random figures that were sitting unpainted on my work table and slathered some paint on them.

Here's a Cephalyx Drudge.

Naturally, NONE of the highlighting or shading I did is visible in the pic. In person, it's all clear, but for whatever reason, not the photo. It's annoying too, because I'm really actually proud of how his skin turned out.

I also painted an AE-WWII German soldier.

This was one of the multipart figures that gave me an absolute headache putting together. The glue absolutely refused to hold together when I was assembling him and the others that came with him. The whole assembly experience just put me off from actually finishing him. It's hard to see, but I tried to do the Autumn Oak Leaf pattern on his pants. The results were... okay. I probably could have done better, but it looks fine even if the camera didn't really pick it up.

Well, on to the next batch. Up next I have some mutated giant rats from This is Not a Test and a mono-cycle robot from Brother Vinni. The rats will hopefully go quick, but the robot will probably take longer since I want to experiment with weathering it. After that, hopefully I'll finally be able to start working on my Thousand Sons.

Good stuff as usual! I see that you also used the mask version Treitak Special Ops head, he will fit better, but seems so much smaller than the latest sculpts which are hulking space apes.

4 armed alien is beefy!

Religious order warmahordes looking good as well.

soldier squad, again looks great.

German trooper looks very good, despite the apparent construction issues you mentioned.

Overall,

Okay, back from house sitting and here's the other four AD Police I was working on!

Of course, I still have more of them to do, but for now, this is actually all I need to play Red Ops 5. I just have to do more zombies. The rules recommend 10 zombies per squad member. I'm about halfway there.

The other thing I worked on was my TNT mutant rats.

Just got a robot left to work on and then I can get started on my Thousand Sons.

I haven't been too productive lately. I have been working on my Rubric Marines, but they're a major slog. So far, I only have one nearly finished. To make matters worse, I got three orders of 15mm minis this week! How am I supposed to resist working on those?

What little bit of productivity I did have was focused mostly on finishing up some AE WWII Germans I've had laying around.
That last German I painted had been in a multipack. This is the other guy from that set, finally finished.

Next, I finally finished up my pack of Volkssturm. They're supposed to be the fodder grunts for the Germans in AEWWII. Weirdly though, they just look like regular old German soldiers, not Volkssturm. Volkssturm were basically volunteers made up the refuse that the German Army wouldn't take. They're single piece figures, which is nice and they have three poses. One thing I like about this line is that it's totally true-scale. I'd tried to do some customizing on them using West Wind heads, but the results were only "okay" at best. I have more of these guys from when I bought the starter pack, so whenever I get to them, I'll be leaving unmodified.

the third guy is unmodified. Though you can't tell from the pic, his helmet is actually a much darker green than the rest of his uniform.

One of the packages that I received this week was my pledge from Critical Mass's Astagar Kickstarter. Now, I wasn't interested in the snake men, but Critical Mass did have its entire catalog available as add-ons and at a discount. So, I grabbed an Astagar tank, since it looked cool, some mecha, and a platoon of troops from their Protolene Khanate faction. The Protolene are right up my alley. Can you guess why?

Alien dog-men! With a hint of hyena, too! I'm actually really low on one yen coins, so I may have to slow down on 15mm figures for a bit. Still, I couldn't resist painting a few of them up. I was even extra nerdy and painted them in blue and yellow, which are some of the few colors dogs are able to see. The blues I used on these guys are actually GW's Thousand Sons Blue and Ahriman Blue, which go together wonderfully. Usually I have trouble blending and highlighting with blues, but these two paints give me no trouble at all. I love them!

Now, I'll be attempting to finish up at least one Rubric Marine and work on four more. Alongside them, I have some 15mm vehicles I'll be working on as well. Should be fun.

Germans and the dogies turned out nice.

You know Khurasan has some dog men aliens as well, right? I don't think you have any though, do you?

Didn't you also say you had some Menoth stuff you hadn't touched? The knights with the crossbows? Let me give them a shot.

And you need to get going on my Blood Warrior dudes!

You painted those teeny tiny lenses so well on the 15mm guys. But the dog aliens are my favorite, especially the one smart enough to wear his helmet. Imagine some kind of space...wolves who weren't smart enough to bring head protection to a gun fight.

I think he's referring to the AD Police. They're definitely a pain to do. Weird I can paint them, but human eyes are still a problem for me.

The Protolene actually do have helmets sculpted onto some of the figures. I love that about them. The detail is so fine though, it can be hard to tell which ones are are wearing them though. They have smoother features and no sculptef nose. Really though, because those features are so fine, you could easily get away with painted all of them with helmets and it would be hard to tell the two headsculpts apart.

I know Khurasan has dog-men as well. So does Darkest Star. I like the Protolene the most though.

I do have some Menoth knight guys that are unpainted, but it isn't the ones with the crossbows. It's the guys with the two-handed swords.

SOrry for the lack of updates. I've been working on Thousand Sons, and it's been very tedious and slow going. But hey, I've got two done!

Here's my first Rubric Marine.

And the Sorcerer, who I literally just finished before I took the pics.

I modified him a little bit. He's supposed to have a scroll on his left hip, but I carved up his Bolt Pistol to have a proper handle and put that on his hip instead. This way, he's got a proper sidearm.

After watching Colony a few weeks back, I got inspired to make a Red Hat soldier for myself. I have a set of Anvil Regiments guys who work perfectly as them, so I tried one out.

Lastly, I painted up Ion Age's January freebie, which was a noble in Desteria armor. It's basically Ion Age's equivalent of Terminator armor.

Since he's a noble, I figured he'd be a bit more unique, so I gave him a scheme that doesn't match up to my Space Knights of Prydians. Interesting thing about this guy, he's armed with dual Power Fists and a maul!

Word of advice for you guys. If you pick up the Rubric Marines, don't fully assemble them before you begin painting. Those loin cloths make it EXTREMELY difficult to paint their legs.

Half of my Rubric Marines are now finished.

I noticed after I took the pics, I forgot to finish cleaning up the gold lines on the backpacks. Whoops. I know the bolters look plain without the hieroglpys painted in, but they're really tiny and my brushes just aren't getting the details right. So, I think I'll just leave them unpainted. I may go back and undo them on the two with the glowing runes.

Now that I'm halfway through them, I'm stopping so I can work on some other stuff. For right now, I'll be working on a 15mm IFV, then some Tartaros Termie Death Guard, and then I'm going to attempt to work on some Stormcast. After that, I will likely get back to the Rubrics. I want to sneak in some metals here and there, too. I just got my Last Saga Kickstarter stuff (finally) yesterday. The casts look good and I can't wait to start painting some of them.

These guys were painted following Warhammer TV's turorial. They were sprayed gold first, using Tamiya's gold spraypaint. Then washed using Reikland Fleshade. That was followed by a bright gold drybrushing and then filling in the blue sections. Again, I recommend not fully assembling them before painting.

As for Stormcast, I want to go with silver and blue. However, for simplicity's sake, I'm going to do the Storm of Sigmar guys in gold.

My Plast Craft Dropzone Commander building arrived today. I had to build it. I was really curious how well these 10mm buildings would scale against my 15mm figures. I have some N-Scale buildings that just didn't work out too well. But these ones seemed like they could work.

I got it built up fairly quickly and yeah, it looks like it will work out rather well with 15mm figures. Hopefully the others in the line would work out just as well.

As you can see, the building is quite tall compared to the figures. If one were inclined to build a downtown or business district table to fight in, these buildings would work very well. Outside of MDF kits, you don't often seem to get this kind of height in 15mm buildings.

I took some pics comparing various lines' 15mm figures against the doors to show how well they scale to the doors.

These are Critical Mass and Peter Pig, both of which I would say work almost perfectly.

A couple of Khurasan figures. I think the space suit might be a bit too bulky to get through the door, but otherwise, both figures look about right to me.

Then we've got Rebel Minis and Ion Age. Rebel's figures can vary pretty wildly in proportions depending on who sculpted them, but most of their stuff tends to be more "true" 15mm like this special forces guy. He looks like he would work pretty well wit that building, though some of my zombies might have difficulties getting through the doors. The Ion Age figure is just a smidge too big though. She doesn't look like she could fit through that door. Thankfully, the size difference isn't so huge that it would completely destroy any immersion a table of these buildings might create.

So, overall, I would definitely consider getting some more of these Dropzone buildings. What I need though is a proper mat/table to put them on.

Yeah. The tan buildings are papercraft from the Heavy Gear website. They're also 10mm, but some, like the ones pictured are workable in 15mm. They'll just be very small buildings. The orange dome off to the side is from Ion Age and is resin.

Sculpts and casts are really top notch on these figures. The humans look just as good, but I'm less inclined to paint them right now since they look so normal. Not much to update with. Didn't get much painting done over the weekend, but I did pick up a whole bunch of stuff! So, despite adding several blisters of minis and a Konflikt '47 walker to my painting pile, all I managed to actually do was paint up a Death Guard Terminator.

Had a pretty good gaming day on Saturday though. Met up with Bobtheinquisitor and he, along with Highlord Tamburlaine and my cousin had a pretty raucous game of Gorechosen. Sadly, I died first, but my fans were sure to mess up the fight several times. We'd planned to get in a game of Frostgrave as well, but we just didn't have the time to do it. Hopefully we can meet up again to give it a go.

For those who have an active gaming group, I really recommend Gorechosen. It's a damn fun game.

I primed a whole bunch of figures today. I'm hoping I'm not biting off more than I can chew with them since there were ten. But, while they were drying, I got to work on that zombie cop from Walking Dead that I'd started back when I did the other two.

Highlord Tamburlaine and I have plans to attempt to play Frostgrave this weekend. So, I started looking into putting together a warband and I realized I needed some figures to stand in as thugs. Oddly enough, I don't really have any that are painted that I felt appropriately fit the profile. My plan is to use some of the Frostgrave Gnolls, but I'm afraid I may not have them done in time. Thankfully, I just so happen to also have some Cephalyx Drudges sitting on my work table! Problem solved. These guys should work great as thugs until I can get my hands on something that is thematically more Menoth. I went ahead and whipped two up tonight, giving me a total of three. Just one more to go and my warband will be complete. I still need to do some basing though.

A Cephalyx (if you have one)? Admech stuff like a Magos? Cawl?

Hey, you never know where Heresy might pop up.

I've been slowly working on part of a Storm of Sigmar box this week, among everything else. I got the three Stormcast Liberators finished up tonight.

I'm happy enough with them. My preference is actually for silver and blue, but I figured I would use the gold spray can I had left over from the Rubrik Marines and it would make things faster. With these three done, I'll start working on some Frostgrave minis next. Actual Frostgrave minis that is, as opposed to minis for Frostgrave. Once I'm through with all of those guys, I think I may go back to working on sci-fi minis.

I also completed a couple of old minis today. I picked up a couple more of Ground Zero Games' old 25mm Stargrunt figures last month and I've been working on them off and on this week. I figured I'd try out a different faction this time and get a couple of the Japanese figures. I kind of like their regular troops, but man, their power armor is UGLY.

Here's the long Ashigaru corporate trooper I picked up.

I know his fatigues look brown in the pic, but they're a lot more red in person.

Here's their ugly ass, koala looking power armor.

I think this may just be the only picture of one of these on the internet. Sure, you can find pics of the old 15mm ones, but I've never seen any pics of the 25mm versions. So hey, those of you who actually follow my plog, you're seeing something exceedingly rare here. I think I got the version with the plasma rifle. I'm not sure anymore and there's no visual references to check. It doesn't look like an HMG though. Despite how godawful ugly this guy is, he's got a certain charm to him. I don't know why, but I would actually consider getting some more of these suits.

I get where you guys are coming from with the panda comparisons, but I see koala way more than panda.

I finished up my Mullo IFV from Ion Age tonight. I have hosue sitting duties once more, so there's going to be little to no hobby stuff going on for the next week. Goody. I get to do it at the end of April, too. I figured I'd finish up my Mullo before I go. The Mullo IFV is basically a sci-fi version of the US military's Bradley. I've painted mine up to go along with my GZG USMC Lunar Marines, hence the drybrushed scheme. The blues and reds were really just chosen to break it up a bit.

This one is armed with a pair of heavy laser cannons, so it would act as a decent backup for my marines. Here's a few extra shots.

The rear doesn't look so good, but that's pretty much all my fault. I'm not so good at filling/cleaning up air bubbles. I also tried using Vallejo's liquid putty for the first time here. The stuff is much better than GW's liquid Green Stuff (the putty actually is a liquid). While it works well, I'm just not so good at cleaning it up. Oh well. It doesn't look that bad in person, plus this thing isn't that huge anyway. Easy enough to dismiss it.

I got my first actual game of Frostgrave in tonight. I played against Highlord Tamburlaine. He and I played with both of us using full teams. I had
Wizard
Apprentice
4 Thugs
1 Thief
2 Crossbowmen
1 Knight
The hardest part of the game actually wound up being the list building. Once we actually started playing, the game wasn't too hard. There's a bit of record keeping, but not too much and nothing too crazy. Once we actually knew what we were doing, the game moved pretty quickly and had some good moments. Chief among them being when my Knight, down to 2 HP, charged Highlord Tamburlaine's Wizard and killed her in one blow. That, plus my own Wizard pulling a Leeory Jenkins and actually surviving were pretty awesome moments. It's not really normal for me to win these types of games, so I was pleased with the results. I even managed to level my Wizard up two ranks, got some treasure, and established a base of operations in a brewery. So yeah, really fun game. I'm going to continue my rather Menoth heavy warband, too.

Post by: Barzam

Nah, I just like the 25mm figures. They're hanging out on my desk at work. I do have a fairly good sized pile of GZG 15mm figures and vehicles though. I love the Moongrunt stuff they put out, but I haven't really had a chance to actually work on any of it. The AD Police guys I'm planning to use in Red Ops 5, but that only really needs four human figures.

Speaking of 15mm, I got my Griffin from Conflict Horizon finished today. I'm still not especially pleased with my skills at painting camo, but this turned out well enough.

I based his colors somewhat on a piece of artwork on the Conflict Horizon website which shows a Griffin in jungle camo patrolling through the woods. I liked it a lot, so I figured I'd give it a try. Next Griffin I get though, it is not getting a camo scheme.

For a 15mm mech, the Griffin is unfortunately a bit on the small size. Here you can see how it compares to a White Dragon marine and a Bandai Federation pilot.

Both figures are more on the "True" 15mm side of the scale, so they're thinner and smaller and yet they still look like they'd have a hard time squeezing into it. Maybe it's remote piloted?

Here's how it compares to the Hoplite, also from Conflict Horizon.

The Hoplite is quite a bit bigger and probably wouldn't have a problem fitting most 15mm figures inside of it.

I didn't just work on 15mm stuff though. I actually worked on a GW figure, if you can believe it! I painted another Death Guard Terminator. This time with Autocannon.

And last, but not least, I painted one of several Frostgrave figures tonight. This guy is the Cult Knight.

I really like the look of this guy and the Cult Templar. Since my Frostgrave warband is based primarily on Menoth figures from Warmachine, I thought he ought to match up with them. On the downside of things, I actually already have several figures that would work better as Knight class and are actually Menoth figures. I still like him though, so maybe I'll work him in anyway. As you can see, I actually tried doing some freehand on him. I attempted to paint a Menofex on his shield and cobblestones on his integral base. I think I pulled the Menofex off a bit better, though both look pretty rough to me.

My next plan of action is to paint up an old Choir of Menoth guy I've had sitting around, the Cult Templar figure, and probably another Amazon.

Tonight, I painted the other half of that Frostgrave set, the Cult Templar.

I also finally got around to finishing that remaining Choir of Menoth member I had sitting around.

I bought the set from the consignment case at the FLGS. It was the older, now out of production smaller set and this particular guy was missing his left hand. For some reason, this one guy has a separate left hand while none of the others do. I managed to repair the issue using a Bones mummy arm, which I gotta say, matched up with the bandaged arms these guys have pretty well. Next time I play Frostgrave, I'll be using the Choir's singers as my Thug class fighters.

I've got some new WIPs to share.

I assembled my Trench Fighters from Anvil Industry. Yes, there's a guy with an axe bayonet on his shotgun.

I also wound up painting something I wasn't intending to work on yet, one of my Nexus aliens from the Icarus Project. So, yeah, last night I pretty much completed one of my Nexus Savages.

He just needs some basing and he's done.

I didn't know you picked up any Icarus Project stuff.

I had assumed they would be huge, but he looks like he's on a 25mm base. Or is it larger than it looks?

I thought you knew I backed it. I only got the Nexus starter, some mod parts to give their actual troops helmets and an LMG, and the armored human merc they lroduced first. Painting the savage was pretty fun. I may be tempted to toss the other one on the painting table in the near future. I just wish they'd done one of the savages holding their pistols. Both are only holding knives.
