I've always liked that Mantic Mule- you've done an excellent job with it. And the colors are very much like I remember seeing on both Iraq and the 'Stan. Looking forward to seeing the next vehicles!

I'll vouch for the shocks too. I thought they were nice touch painted.

Having seen the Mule in person, it really did turn out nice.

Were you going to do those new Anvil guys in similar colors or as a different chapter?

Yeah, I got my Black Friday Black Ops Marine from Anvil Industry today. He's huge. Easily Primaris sized. Even kneeling, the guy is as tall as a regular Space Marine. So yeah, He'll be joining my Primaris Raptors.

I love seeing Deadzone stuff on here. I much prefer their sci-fi aesthetic to, say, Corvus Belli. Maybe it's the old 2000AD nerd in me Also, lovely Raptors; there's not enough military green marines

Following on the heels of the Mule is the promised Taurox. I decided to go with the minigun packing Taurox Prime since it was the cooler looking setup. The wheels come from Blood and Skulls Industries, which I got from their ebay store. They make the Taurox so much more palatable. I will never understand why GW thought the treads would be a good idea.

Looks ace and really militaristic, in the best possible way. I could handle the rear treads on a Taurox, because Half-tracks rule, but the front ones were just idiotic. Great work!

I totally confused it with your mule because of its lack of tracks.

Didn't realize what I was looking at. Did turn out nice. So did the mule.

When I last updated, it was actually Monday morning, around midnight. Since then, I've had a bit happen this week that's left me more than a little depressed. Unfortunately, Monday morning, I had to say goodbye to my 17 year old dog, Kiki. I'm not going to go into it too much, especially since I've already eulogized her several times on Facebook and Instagram. Just, we'd had her for nearly 16 years. That long, they're not just a pet, they're a part of the family. Losing her has just left me messed up all week. Today was really the first day I was able to bring myself to start painting and the first day where I've felt almost normal again. I dedicated a good chunk of the day to working on a couple of minis and only just now completed them.

Here is a Genestealer Broodlord, purchased on Black Friday.

I had plans to whip up a Purestrain Kill Team with this guy as their leader. You may notice that I've made him blind. For whatever reason, the eyes on Tyranids and Genestealers have never sat right with me. They need either more eyes, or less. More makes them look more buggy, which is nice. But, frankly, I think they look a lot freakier with no eyes. Certainly more Xenomorph-like, but it helps add more of an alien feel to them. I went with Hive Fleet Kraken's colors mostly just because it's what's on the box. I wanted him to have more of a sickly pale color to his skin though. Since Genestealers spend most of their time hiding out in deep, dark spaces, I figure they wouldn't get a lot of sunlight, so the paler skin tones really work for them. The lack of eyes also helps with that. Some creature that spends most of its time in the darkness of a derelict space hulk isn't really going to need good eyesight.

The other figure I completed today was a Chaplain for my Raptors. Now they have someone who can bash in the skulls of heretics.

Most Chaplain models have a rather ostentatious look to them that doesn't fit well with the Raptors' more practical look. This 30k Chaplain is almost perfect though. No gaudy robes, no scraps of paper all over him, no reliquaries, not even a skull helmet. He has some fancy details, but nothing to really get in the way of him fighting, which I really like. This is a Chaplain that's ready to hold the line alongside his battle brothers.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
After typing that post, I had a memory about Kiki pop back in my mind. Something I'd almost completely forgotten about. Back when I lived at my parents' house, back when she used to sleep on my bed, often times while I was painting or building a model at my hobby table, she would sit and wait for me under the table. I'd usually be giving her belly rubs with my feet while I was painting.

Thanks for the kind words, guys. Bob, you actually got to meet Kiki. Sadly, not in her prime though. She definitely left a gap in our lives.

I've been trying to channel that grief into a creative outlet, so I've been working on adding to my Raptors. Today I finished Anvil Industries' Black Friday Black Ops special edition sniper. He'll be joining my Primaris Raptors as a marksman. And guess what, that just happens to be a specialist option available in Kill Team!

I know the cloak kind of blends into his armor. It's actually khaki, not green. Same color as the casing on his rifle. I love the look of this guy, so I'm looking forward to see what Anvil's full production line of Exo Lords are going to look like.

I don't think so. I think you tried to pick up one of the rats, either Ratty or Penelope.

Actually, no. I don't think it looks very good up close. Doesn't look much like Multicam, which was what I was after. I just did this while the tv was on. Took maybe ten minutes or so.

Christmas was surprisingly decent. There's a noticeable difference without Kiki around, though.

Actually, I only have this guy and my Reivers rocking camo. But, my Raptors are almost all kitted out for spec ops work.

aku-chan wrote:That's a nifty looking camo cloak.

Thanks. I was torn as to whether I should try going for Multicam, or if I should've tried something that would contrast a bit better with the green armor.

kestral wrote:Love the wheels on the Taurox - gives it a great look, kind of consistent with the Mule too in overall vibe, just more ornate. Like a command vehicle.

Exactly what I was going for with it. I wanted both to look like more rugged military hardware.

Small update today. I finished the Aggressors my dad picked up for me. I've been working on them as a way to try and focus on my energy into something a bit more productive. Now my Raptors have some heavier support.

I decided to break my own rule about officers standing out and gave the Sergeant a red helmet. I don't think that's something these guys would do, but I'll admit, I do like the way the red helmet looks. I'll allow Rule of Cool this once.

My Black Friday order from Anvil was actually pretty small. Just two things: the sniper and an Afterlife figure. I completed the Afterlife figure today. He's a Republic Grenadier Commander.

One of my Christmas gifts was Labyrinth of the Necrons. So that means I now have all of the members of Squad Sevastus (minus the Captain). I'll be focusing on painting the rest of the squad next.

Well, I have all of the Labyrinth of the Necrons guys painted, which means I have the full 10-man squad for Squad Sevastus. I'm not yet ready to post them yet though because I haven't added the decals just yet. Once those are on, I'll post them.

Today's update is partially NSF. I backed Hasslefree's Kickstarter to have Kev White (and Tre Manor) sculpt figures based on some Matt Dixon pinup art. I know some have had issues with the Kickstarter (and a number have been verbally abusing Hasslefree's staff), but I received my figures without any problems. Granted, I only ordered three, but still. They're nice figures. Each figure was offered in four formats: pinup, skyclad, "winter," and "frost." Skyclad should be obvious, those are nudes. Pinup is the character clothed, but wearing skimpy clothing. Winter is the character dressed sensibly and much more realistically, and Frost is actually a resculpt by Tre Manor. The frost versions were interesting because Tre would sculpt heavy cold weather gear over the skyclad nudes. I wound up getting one nude, one pinup, and one frost. I just completed the first of them, which is the skyclad Shayda Diavol, a barbarian warrior.

I'll leave the pic spoiler'd for those at work.

Spoiler:

And yes, Kev did indeed sculpt them all anatomically correct.

Last night I finished a significantly more clothed figure, Kaelyssa, Night's Whisper v.1 from Warmachine.

I'm very fond of Warmachine's elves, as I'm sure I've mentioned in the past.

Lastly, here's a bit of a teaser as to something else I've been working on...

Brother Addicio Sanyctus

"Just get me to the front line. My claws will do the rest."

Since losing his right eye to an Ork axe, Adiccio Sanyctus has burned with violent rage. He is given to berserk charges in close engagements, slashing his enemies apart with his lightning claws as he ploughs onward. Only when the din of battle recedes does he speak calmly once more.

How often do you see a Terminator sculpted in a running pose? Brother Sanyctus comes from Space Marine Heroes series 2. He's the third one I've completed from that squad. Just a few more to go. I'll post the others once they're all finished. His bio, btw, comes from his little bio card included with the figure. This time, they actually have the bio and the quote in English and Japanese, which is nice. I still have no clue what the little symbols on the card mean though. Like with series 1, they don't match up to any GW games or stats that I'm aware of.

People were upset that Hasslefree has had a lot of staffing issues of late, which backed up the delivery of the Kickstarter, which backed up delivery of their regular retail products. I believe they were dealing with at least one death, several illnesses, staff leaving, and being snowed in multiple times. All of which they kept in communication about. But people suck, and get abusive of little metal people.

Bob, she does have a butt crack, it just didn't show up in the pic very well. Kaelyssa is only available in metal. There is a plastic elf warcaster in the starter set with similar attire though.

On Saturday, my loyalist Death Guard finally got blooded. They fought a 3-way skirmish between them, heretic Death Guard (Highlord Tambulaine) and Primaris Ultramarines (our cousin). Miraculously, not only did my Death Guard win the game, but they suffered zero losses! For some reason, when I play Marines I tend to actually do halfway decent.

I finally finished all of my Raptors. I'll post them later tonight. I've also been painting some modern Russian soldiers.

These guys are plastics from Warlord/WGF

Just the two of them so far. I was using them more or less to practice painting Multicam in preparation of my metal figures.

I've got a whole bunch of modern Russians for Christmas, so I finally getting around to working on them. Since I wasn't comfortable yet with the camo patterns, I decided to do the first two in Gorka suits, which are a type of mountainous terrain uniform. They have a two-tone khaki/tan and green scheme to them.

This guy is the first one I did, armed with an AK-74U. The NVGs were actually a separate piece and a big pain to attach, what with their tiny, tiny contact point. I should point out, I actually painted the eyes on all of these guys, even this one with the balaclava.

This metal figure was second. Another Spetsnaz. This time, armed with a Saiga shotgun. I tried a different combination of colors on his uniform, opting for more of a tan color this time and a lighter shade of green. I had to take the photo at night, so the lighting absolutely sucks. The colors don't blend together in person like they do in the photo.

This is my third one, so far. I just finished this guy last night. I felt comfortable enough with the multicam camo scheme that I decided to give it a go on one of the metals. I think it came out okay.

Raptors to come later, along with some more amazon/barbarian women.

What's your plan for the Russians?

I feel they need to fight something from The Others....

Plus your Death Guard only one due to my sucky rolls.

Barzam Paints random miniatures- 6/30/2020 Dusk Raider Thunder Warrior Sniper @ 2019/01/23 08:09:09

Post by: Barzam

Right, your sucky rolls that totally pasted the Ultramarines. And yet, you couldn't even scratch my Death Guard.

No plans for the Russians beyond having some modern Russians. Maybe if we ever do some modern or horror themed games, I'll put them to use.

And no, I absolutely do NOT want to paint a full army in multicam. It's bad enough with the guys I've got.

Okay, now for the promised additional pictures. Ladies first though...

My Savage Core Amazon Warleader. She'll go great with my other Amazons and is perfect for Paleo Diet.

She's supposed to have a shield, too, but I seem to have misplaced it. So... oh well.

Now, my second figure from Hasslefree's Kickstarter, Dawn, the Stone Age Warrior. This is the pinup version. I probably should have got the nude version as well.

If her pose looks a little odd, it's because the figure is actually meant to go along with a small dinosaur that she's leaning against. I obviously didn't get it and I'm fine with not having it. I like this figure quite a bit, actually.

Now for the Raptors. I apologize for the cruddy quality of the pics. I took these last night, and like the Russians, the lighting was pretty bad.

First, Brother Dolor (who just so happens to be perfect as a comms expert in Kill Team)

Brother Aethor (who happens to make a perfect close combat specialist for Kill Team)

Brother Calistus

Brother Toriad

and the man himself, leader of Squad Sevastus, Brother-Sergeant Sevastus, who is sporting Rogue Trader era command markings, just like my Primaris sergeants.

That completes Squad Sevastus, now a full 10-man squad with two heavy weapons and two special weapons. I'm just annoyed that I am not really able to take pictures during the day now.

Now then, I've already shown Brother Sanyctus of Squad Victorno, now it's time for the rest of the squad.

Here's Brother Maeklus

Brother Phaello

Brother Ebellius

and the main man himself, Brother-Sergeant Victorno

That completes my first squad from First Company. As luck would have it, since I ordered the full series 2 case, I also have a Captain to hang out with them. I'll eventually get to him.

Also of note, I made sure that every member of both teams has a checkerboard detail on them somewhere. Second Company members all have black & white checkerboards while First Company all have black & yellow. I know Highlord Tamburlaine hates painting checkerboards, but I find it kind of fun and it gives a nice splash of additional color to them without going overboard. Every single member also sports a hand painted chapter badge. That I found to be tedious and annoying to do. Glad I'm done with those for the time being. Until I get to the next batch, anyway.

Thanks, all.

Here's three more Russians I just completed.

Two more plastics from Warlord/WGF.

That gives me an LMG and a Grenadier. I'm not too happy with how the grenadier's camo came out. The paints were starting to dry out, so I had to get them wet, which resulted in them being too thin, and it was kind of a mess. I'm not going to redo him though. He's just a cheapy plastic, so who cares?

I also completed another Spectre Miniatures Spetsnaz figure. I was trying to go for more of an arid multicam scheme, but it wound up looking more like a forest pattern.

It certainly doesn't look like multicam, but with my other Russians, it doesn't look too bad mixed in, especially at a tabletop level.

Believe it or not, that character is not only a good guy, but he's also supposed to be a Turkish ninja. Yep. Bandai sold some of the toys in the US in '89 under the terribad name, Tacky Stretchoid Warriors. I had nearly the whole line in my youth. The only figure I was missing was Jiraiya himself who, oddly enough, was marketed as a bad guy.

mcmattila wrote:Beautiful stuff on this thread! It must have taken some time to do all that camo work, but the work has definitely paid off!

Surprisingly, it actually doesn't take that long to do the camo. I just followed Spectre Miniatures' guide for painting it. It works well enough and is relatively quick to paint.

Geez. It's been nearly a month since I last updated. Reason for that was, once again, house sitting for my parents. I've been working on painting a Mantic Enforcer dropship, too, and that's been taking up most of my painting time since my previous post. Still not done with it though.

In the mean time, I've also been working on my modern Russians. I finished the last of them tonight. I really just need to add little Russian flags to them and paint their base rims. Beyond those two things, They're finished and I don't need to paint any more Russians until my next Spectre Miniatures order arrives.

Now, what I was going for was Russia's A-TACs camo scheme with these guys. It's kind of a difficult scheme to do. I figure this is good enough. I'm pretty happy with the results I got, though I do wish it looked a bit more tan and less green. These guys are all available from Spectre Miniatures in a set. I did modify two of them though to have monocle NVGs. Those came from the Warlord plastics.

Grenadier with NVG

Team Leader with SMG and NVG (SMG was supposed to be suppressed, but the suppressor was somewhat miscast, so I removed it)

Rifleman

Marksman

You ought to post the dropship even though it's not done. I thought it looked good. I'm probably the only other Dakka member that's seen it...

I didn't realize you haven't posted in that long. Our parents haven't been out of town that many times... have they?

You start those GW store figures yet?

Russians turned out well. What's your plan for them?

What's my plan for any of this stuff? I don't know.

They were gone for more than a week. Starting a new full time job also has an impact on my painting as well. Between having to get to bed several hours earlier and being totally drained when I get home, I just haven't really felt like painting.

Thanks Meer Cat. It's a difficult camo to pull off without an airbrush. I'm glad you get some enjoyment from looking over my hobby ADHD.

Since Highlord Tamburlaine asked for it, here's my still WIP Arbiter Interceptor. You can pretty much get what I'm going for with it though.

So, update. I have completed the Arbiter Interceptor. Aside from maybe putting a few decals on it, I'm done with it. But, I have not taken any photos of it. Yet. With luck, I'll get some photos of it this weekend.

I did paint some figures this week though! Yes, amidst the Arbiter, work, and not having much time to paint, I managed to start and finish three figures!

Two more Russian special forces soldiers to add to my ranks.
First is another machine gunner, this one with an RPK.

second is another grenadier

Yes, I painted the eyes on both of these guys, and yes, I did remember to paint a little Russian flag on them. I decided not to paint these two in camo, obviously. I've seen in pics that the Russian military does have non camouflaged uniforms. These aren't quite the same shade of green as those, but they're close enough for my taste and they look good mixed in with my non SSO guys.

Funny enough, the color I used for their uniforms looks like a pretty good match for Seal Team 5's green uniform. Hmm.

The other figure I painted is totally random. It's a Roman civilian. Nothing exciting here. Just some dude. Looks like he wants to share his opinions with whoever will listen to him.

He's from the Gangs of Rome line. Nice, simple, and something fairly different for me to paint.

Sorry it's taken a few days to get back to you. The paint is now called US Olive Drab, #70.887. I used to be part of their Panzer Aces colors and went under the name US Tank Crew.

Two more figures completed. Another modern spec ops and a gladiator.

Here's an American Spec-Ops guy. He's another Spectre Miniatures figure. I believe he's listed as a Tier 1 Operator. I think? But yeah, pretty much just a generic special forces guy. He comes armed with a suppressed MP-7 smg.

The other figure is another Gangs of Rome figure from War Banner. This time it's a generic gladiator. The Gangs of Rome figures have interesting bases. They all come with MDF bases with the regular fighter bases having slots cut into them for what I'm pretty sure are HP tokens. neat idea.

He's just a smooth criminal.

Highlord Tamburlaine gave me an incomplete set of Asterian Kalyshi a while back and I finally got tired of staring at them all unpainted. The figures are odd. Clearly, Mantic's take on the Exodite concept, though taken in a somewhat different direction. The Asterians went all amazon warriors as opposed to GW's dinosaur riding space knights. The funny thing though is that the men are just as scantily clad as the women. Probably why most people didn't exactly take to these guys and gals. It's almost like they're wearing nothing at all. Nothing at all. Nothing at all....

Stupid sexy space elf.

I kept the colors pretty much the same as what I used on my Marionettes. Maybe someday I'll actually go back and paint more of my Asterians.

I decided to paint something a bit different. Something to break up all of the realworld soldiers and Space Marines (and the odd Kalyshi). On a whim I picked up a Necron Cryptek on the weekend. I haven't really painted Necrons before, so I thought I'd give it a shot. He was a decent change of pace, but felt a bit too much like trying to paint an Imperial Knight on a smaller scale, what with all the gunmetal and all.

Here he is.

You can click the picture for a much larger view with zoom in my gallery.

I wanted to go for more of a teal color, but the paint I used wound up coming out more light blue than teal. Oh well. Also weird, the green I used for his staff was super thin. I isn't supposed to be like that, but no matter how much shaking I did, it still came out super thin and transparent. The result was that I got a metallic green staff blade! I layered it with a Biel-Tan Green wash a few times to help darken it up and make it look a bit better. The results overall were... okay. I'm not too sure how I feel about this guy. He looks decent enough, but I know I could've done better. Chances are good he won't be staying in my collection long term.

Which green did you use? I had a similar issue with Emerald green, except after painting 90% of my samurai with it working as a wash it suddenly gained some medium and doesn't look consistent..

It was Vallejo Dark Green, color number 72.028. I think it was part of the Games Color line. It definitely shouldn't come out so thin and transparent.

So, how about some new photos?

Friday is my last day of training for work, then it's off to my permanent work site. Once that happens, I won't have to be going to bed quite so early, which means I should be able to paint more. I've got plenty of stuff to work on.

So, how about one of Anvil's Daughters of the Burning Rose? I bet you haven't seen any of these painted up aside from the promo pieces Anvil made to promote the Kickstarter. So far, I only have one done, but I've got a full squad that I will eventually get to. Heroes, too. I decided to paint them to match my Shadow Keeper Custodes. That way I can run Talons of the Emperor if I wanted.

So, she's going to pretty much be my painting guide for the rest of the squad. Now, I know it looks like her armor is black. It isn't. It's actually a very dark metallic silver. I painted her exactly the same as how I did my Shadow Keepers, so depending on the lighting, the armor looks black, but has a nice metallic sheen to it.

My parents found this Primaris Lietenant for me on their last European excursion. I still need to paint some insignias on him, but I've just been too lazy to do it.

I also started painting some Vanguard Infiltrators to go with my Raptors. These guys are pretty well suited to the Raptor's battle doctrine. Focusing on stealth, ambushes, and infiltration is just about perfect for them. I decided I'll be painting them to match my Reivers, with the Casrkin style orangish camo over green armor.

Finally, I've started making some new Blood Pact soldiers. My old greatcoat wearing, shotgun toting guys had been sold off a long time ago. I recently came across a small bits company by the name of Reptilian Overlords who have some pretty cool looking bits available, including these swanky heretic parts. The troops are made using Reptilian Overlord's head, torso, and shoulderpads. The arms, legs, and guns are Anvil Industry, and the equipment packs are mostly GW.

I like the way they came out, but they required a fair bit of work to get the parts to mesh together.

One final bit that was not advertised with the others, was an officer's head. So, having that and knowing that the Blood Pact have Commissars of a sort, I had to make them a Commissar.

This guy uses a Mad Robot torso, Victoria Lamb arms, and the Reptilian Overlords head.

I discovered some leftover Blood Pact Maxmini heads that I had from my original project. I'm kind of thinking that maybe when I get through a few of these projects, I might try and make a second squad with some less kitted out guys.

Now that I'm back home for a bit, hopefully I'll have time to bash together another Pact soldier or two. In the meantime, I painted some 15mm models, which I haven't done for quite a long time. Conflict Horizon put out a whole bunch of new mechs and I absolutely had to get some.

So, first, we have the Doberman. This thing has a funky design. digitigrade legs, tiny head, funky gaps in the frame, it's just weird looking and I love it.

The other one I got was the Powerman 9000 NEL. It's a loader mech! I love loader mechs! This guy is one of three variants they make. One has a friggin' crane! The model itself is very basic. It is, after all, a logistics machine meant for loading cargo. It did come with some options for hands though. Pincer, loader forks, grabby claws, and more humanoid hands, in case you wanted to have one being used by armed insurgents or local militia that's been armed with a firearm or melee weapon.

I'm going to have to eventually get the other two variants for my civilians.

I picked up a few Wizkids pre-primed figures over the weekend and just finished painting them up. Probably going to keep the elf, but sell the other two. Click the pics to see bigger versions in the gallery.

Here's a cool looking floaty Grim Reaper monster. He's fairly big. That's a 40mm base he's on.

This guy is supposed to be a Human Ranger. I'm not really seeing what makes him a Ranger. For some reason, he has a hamster in his hand. Though, the sculpt is so soft that it's hard to even tell what he's actually holding. And yes, I tried to match the packages gaudy colors.

The next one is a Lunar Elf Sorceress. I don't know what a Lunar Elf is, but I thought she looked kind of cool. She came packed with the Ranger, oddly enough. Wizkids don't usually mix the species/gender/class in a single blister, but this one did.

Details are kind of soft, as usual with these figure and my pictures do my work no justice. Like, I used a wash on her that you can't even see in the photos. She looks pretty good at tabletop level, and that's what really matters.

Hey look! I'm updating!

Over the weekend, while once again house sitting, I managed to get some painting time in. I'd been wanting some of CMON's Seven Sins figures from The Others since the Kickstarter, but I didn't back the campaign and I didn't much care for the way the game actually played (plus the heroes were kind of lame). Thankfully, Miniature Market had them on super discount a couple weeks ago, so I had to get them while they were cheap. Envy and Wrath didn't do a lot for me, but Lust and Greed? I had to have them.

So... guess what I painted this weekend.

Let's start with the lusty bunch.

First, the Abominations. In both boxes, you get three sculpts, and two of each sculpt.

sexy bunch, aren't they? The star of this set though is the Avatar. I'm a little disappointed in just how small it is, actually. The thing should really be a lot bigger. It'd make an amazing Nurgle Daemon Prince if it were bigger.

And here's the group.

As you can see, the Avatar is only a bit bigger than the Abominations. Now, if you're familiar with these minis, you'll notice there's something missing here. There's the "human" cultist, the Controller. The lighting at my parents' house isn't very good for painting and I didn't have the right colors with me, so unfortunately, he just hasn't been done yet. Hopefully I'll have him done soon. I'm waiting on a replacement chair for my painting table since mine decided to finally fall apart on me last week. once I get that, then I'll tackle the Controller.

How about Greed? Well, I did have the right paints to get all of them, so let's take a look. Let's start with the Controller for them.

Yep. A fat guy with an extra pair of hands and a mouth on his gut.

Here's the Abominations. They're a lot smaller for Greed. They sort of wind up looking like large, hungry Nurglings.

Lastly, we have the boss, the Avatar of Greed. Arms and mouths. No eyes anywhere on the model, but boy are there a lot of teeth.

Again, I wish the Avatars were bigger. This thing should be towering over regular 28mm miniatures, but he's just not that big. He's only on a 40mm base.

Funnily enough I'm in the same boat, except I also missed out on the MM sale, but was able to grab Wrath from the UK for like $12 (free shipping?!). Works for me, and I'm currently prepping that avatar to be a slightly smol Khorne DP. He doesn't seem as bad as yours here - especially not that shorty Lust - but will certainly be standing on a Tactical Bluff for added height

Your crews here painted up well, makes me more excited to work on my angry things. Dig those lil' Abominations most, nice squiggly design.

Just don’t put a little greed guy on either side of the avatar unless your trying to summon Slaanesh .

Not much to show tonight. I just completed the imaginatively named "PMC Operator 1" from Anvil Industry. This one was released as a special character model alongside their female PMC figures.

I mostly tried to keep her in line with the promo art Anvil Had showing off the character with some other mercenaries. Her eyes are a little wonky, but otherwise, I'm very happy with how she turned out.

I also completed a few more Space Marines for my Raptors chapter. Nothing special, just more of the Primaris Infiltrators. This time, it's the Sergeant, a guy on the vox, and a medic.

It's a little hard to see, but the Sergeant has scars running down the side of his face. The medic I painted while I was house sitting last month. That's why his optics and the center bit on his backpack aren't painted. I'd forgotten to bring those particular colors along. I could finish him up now, but.... I'm lazy.

The other Servitor from the set. I don't really care for this guy very much. Too busy, and Finecast does not lend iteself well to all of the little cables everywhere.

Got another of the Kalyshi finished.

And got another Spectre Russian done in green.

Well folks, with the Contrast paints now available, I figured I should probably try and tackle the Tatsu Gigamek from Warzone that I got way back at Christmas. I've been dreading it and putting it off because I just didn't want to paint another large model and the tedium that comes with it. Contrast makes it so much easier though! So, he's finally done. Yes, the colors are simple. I know. I wanted him to go with my Shinsengumi Eldar, and they have black and bone colored gear with blue and white cloth bits. So I had to do it on him, too.

Apologies for the yellow-ness of the photos. 1)My camera is old and kind of crappy. 2)most of the lights in my house seem to be more yellowish.

The Tatsu is a pretty big guy though. I sadly don't have a Wraithknight to compare it to, but I do have Imperial Knights.

So, that should give you a pretty good idea of how big it is. If HIghlord Tamburlaine and I ever play any games that allow large units like that, you better believe I'm going to be bringing it.

In addition to the Tatsu Gigamek, I did paint a couple other figures. I got another Daughter of the Burning Rose completed.

And I randomly painted a Wreck-Age Staker. I don't recall the fluff for the Stakers, but I believe they're basically a bunch of post-apocalyptic homesteaders trying to establish new settlements. This guy happens to have a scythe tied to a shotgun for some reason.

Most likely as a Wraithknight. I think it's close in size. I just wish I could've attached its gun. It actually had ranged weapon options, but for some reason the options aren't available with the arms I chose. It would've made a better Knight proxy with the weapon attached.

Thanks. The effect is pretty simple. It's just Nihilkath Oxide over a white base with a few additional drops of white over that as highlights.

Did the guns come along with the kit? Or was it missing the gun? If you have the gun how about a shoulder mount. Or sling over the back, then it could fit the bill as a Titan.

Barzam Paints random miniatures- 6/30/2020 Dusk Raider Thunder Warrior Sniper @ 2019/06/26 17:50:40

Post by: Barzam

Yeah, the kit came with two guns. A big gatling gun, and some kind of energy weapon. They both mount into sockets on an alternate right arm. See the white piece on the right forearm? On the alternate, there's a couple of holes there that you can plug either gun into. For some reason, the sword drawing arm doesn't have the mounting holes though.

A back mounted armature could be cool. The only problem would be that it would need to contend with both the hat and the smoke launchers being in the way. If there's some way to do it without being obtrusive, I may try that. Maybe use one of Bandai 's Gunpla Builders articulated armatures.

I’m sure you have gundam parts a plenty to use .

Perhaps a long bar that connects to the back that lets the cannon pivot on it. Similar to war machines shoulder gun. That way the hat doesn’t get in the way.

I have a Hardygun Mobile Suit RGM-111 kit that is waiting to be converted into an Eldar Titan; the articulated mount for the energy cannon attaches to the middle of the back- the gun can then swing up over either shoulder, or swing around around the left side. Something like that might fit your big guy, and not foul the helmet, sword arm or smoke launchers?

Highlord Tamburlaine used to have a Hardygun. It was a cool kit for the time. Unfortunately, a central mount won't work as there's a big exhaust smack dab in the middle of the back. I think some of the Build Fighters kits have armatures that could work though.

Well, the armatures I wanted to use weren't available, but I did actually order an armature kit from Kotobukiya. So, we'll see what I can scrounge together. Hopefully it'll work well.

Completed one of Anvil's Vindicare Assassin proxies this weekend. I like the figure but coulnd't decide on colors. I thought maroon would look good for the jacket, but I'm not feeling the final result. I'm thinking I may just do the next one with a red jacket and the skirt bit in red as well.

It doesn't show well here, but the black armor is actually metallic. My technique for the metallic black armor on my Custodes and my Daughters of the Burning Rose is a bit of a pain to do and I wasn't really liking my recent results on the plasma gunner, so I tried something different. This technique used black Contrast paint over silver. I think the technique actually works a lot better and its a lot cleaner than the previous technique. The only downside is that the metallic coloring is a lot more subtle and there's no gloss to it.

She, actually. I wasn't planning on adding any designs, but hmm. Maybe. Perhaps painting a rose on the cape or something? The snipers are clearly meant to be Vindicare stand-ins, but their outfits have a very Rogue Trader-ish feel to them. So, I suppose embellishing them with some brighter colors or designs that make them stand out might not be so bad. I'll consider it when I do the second one.

Here's the only ASOIAF mini I have, a Tully Sworn Shield. I got this guy from BobtheInquisitor. I'd wanted some of these guys because I liked their armor design, but didn't really want to spring for a whole box. BobtheInquisitor was kind enough to trade me one.

The figure's sculpt is really good except for his face. It's pretty mushy. From a tabletop level, it'll look fine, but up close, eeeeeh. Once again, experimenting with Contrast paints here. The scale-mail tunic was painted using Aethermatic Blue, which is very thin and quite transparent. Moreso than some of the other Contrast paints I picked up. It seems almost more like a glaze. Anyway, most of the painted examples I've seen as well as the art depict these guys with sort of a turquoise color to their tunics. I'd picked up Aethermatic Blue with the intention of eventually using it for some Thousand Sons, but while it's too transparent to really be used for that, it actually worked out nicely here. I just applied two layers of it over silver. The crossguard and hilt of his sword were also painted with Contrast paints over silver. In this case, Iyanden Yellow. It gives a pretty decent gold effect, I'd say. I'm not so sure how it would look used over a larger area, like a Stormcast, but on smaller details like this, it works quite nicely.

Hmm. Lannister Crossbowmen, you say? Why yes, I might be interested in some.

The Tully guy actually has very little normal paint on him. I just lathered him in a brighter silver, put Contrast on the tunic, and a thin black wash over the silver bits. That's pretty much it. The skirt, pouches, scabbard, the wraps on the blade and Pepsi shield were all regular paints. His face was done using a base of bone white with a Contrast flesh tone over it.

I actually finished up the rest of my Blood Pact squad. Like the three I did before, they needed some work to get the parts to work together. I'm very happy with my results though. I might even be able to make a Kill Team out of them.

First, a basic rifleman

A second rifleman, though a bit more action-y

I really wish I had some spent ammo casings ejecting out of the gun. It'd really complete the look.

Finally, we have the team grenadier with a panzer faust.

As before, these guys are a mix of bits. Heads, shoulder pads, torsos, and some of the pouches and grenades came from Reptilian Overlords. The arms, guns, legs, and the muzzle flash are all Anvil Industries. The panzer faust and the arms holding it are from Mad Robot, and some of the pouches and canteens are GW.

Yeah, this is actually the plastic Vindicare, Bob.

This was another experiment with Contrast. The suit was painted with black Contrast over a gray base. I like how it came out. You can't really tell, but I had to do cleanup a few times due to some other paints getting on his suit. I just slopped a couple layers of the Contrast paint right back over it and voila, you can't even tell!.

I needed the rifle to be green to help him pop more. Without it, he would've had to rely on just the bits of red, and they're too few and scattered to really make him pop. The green adds a nice bit of visual contrast to the black. Now, I've got a Culexis, and I don't know how I'm going to make him not look boring since he doesn't really have a lot of color to him.

Not the most exciting update today. Just three 28mm figures.

Because I'm sure people love seeing my super generic green uniformed Russians, here's a fourth one.

Now I've got a small fire team of these guys in generic green, a squad in A-TACS camo, and a decent sized squad in multicam. More than enough to actually play a game with.

Now, for a decidedly more old school flair, here's a couple of rarely seen human betrayers from Ion Age's 28mm line.

The sculpts are pretty simple, single piece figures. I didn't want to go too crazy with the colors on them. For some reason, they remind me a lot of Void figures.

That one betrayer' leather jacket looks really good. It looks like it should feel like leather.

As for the Russian guy, his facial expression perfectly captures that moment when he was aiming at a tank commander, exhaling in preparation for a trigger pull, then realized that the tank's barrel had fixed on him, softly snorted, and whispered, "nichevo."

Part of the reason I've been quiet this month is because I've actually been working on a fair few 15mm figures. I've been trying to get back into the groove of painting them.

This little guy was the first 15mm figure I've painted in months.

This is one of the Nox troopers from Ion Age. These are actually space elves in heavy power armor. This is from their early set of Nox, simply called The Nox. He's part of a small 5 man squad that I'm pretty sure I've posted the rest of on here. Their sculpts aren't as nice as the newer ones they've done, but he's still got his charm. Yeah, I know he's super plain in terms of color. 1, my lighting washed out the highlights. There's a lot more depth to his paintjob than what you can see in the pic. 2, The Nox have pretty boring armor normally anyway. Their standard color scheme is just a dull red with no ornamentation except for a gold trim on officers. This guy was actually an experiment with Contrast paints, too.

With him out of the way, I've been slowly tackling a bag of random Alternative Armies Laserburn minis Highlord Tamburlaine gave me around Christmas. They're been fun to paint.

These guys are the Imperial Black Guard. They were also a Contrast experiment.

Their sculpts are kind of mushy, so I didn't really bother going in for a whole lot of effort on them. I don't know what their background is, but they're clearly meant to be some kind of elite unit. My guess is they're some sort of precursor to the Adeptus Custodes.

Then we have a Red Redemptionist Dreadnought with a weapon called a Sun Gun. I assume the Sun Gun is a precursor to the Metla Gun.

I thought I'd try and make him a bit more colorful and try out my bone white Contrast paint, so I painted him like a soldier of Menoth. Seems fitting for a religious zealot unit.

Following that, I tried one more 15mm experiment with Contrast. It's pretty obvious what this guy is.

He's clearly a Xenomorph, but he's a chunky little guy. He's quite swole, in fact. Weirdly though, it has a very ropey sculpt. LIke it's a colony of worms or something. It's an odd sculpt. I can forgive its oddness though because the sculpt is probably as old as me.

After that, I went back to more regular painting methods. Again, the lighting in my house washes out much of the highlighting. These guys are Imperial Space Marines. I've posted the two gunners before, but not the officer.

here's a Marine with a heavy boltgun

And a support boltgun

all three together

Here's another Marine in Power Armor. I had erroneously called the previous one I posted a Dreadnought. These are not the Dreadnought. There's a clear distinction between the regular power armor and the Dreadnought power armor. This power armored marine is wielding a Plasma Cannon. It looks very similar to the Sun Gun, but the sculpt is a bit different and unlike the Sun Gun, is hooked up to the suit via a cable.

THIS is an Imperial Dreadnought.

He's got a three-tube rocket launcher on his back, a support cannon on his right arm, and what I think might be a Conversion Beamer on his left. Either that or a cut down support bolter. It's hard to tell. This wasn't the best cast.

Leaving Alternative Armies, I painted a couple of Rebel Mini's rioters.

And grabbing random bags, looking for something else to paint, I found that I still had a bunch of Micropanzer minis that I haven't touched. This guy, I believe is from their SAS faction. No clue if that's supposed to be the Special Air Service, or if it's supposed to mean something else.

I ordered a bunch of US troops in hardsuits from Ground Zero Games last night and I think I may use these guys as light infantry companions to them.

And finally, I started painting my Nuclear Shrimp figures from their Black Earth kickstarter. I'd wanted to avoid painting them in a way that made them look like Master Chief, but it wound up happening anyway. Oh well. These guys are UEF Rangers. A power armored jump unit from their Not-Imperial Guard faction.

And yes, these guys are 15mm figures. They were 3d sculpted, so they were able to produce them in 6mm, 15mm, and 28mm with minimal detail loss. My casts weren't the best, unfortunately, but I was able to make them look decent. I've got four more to do still.

I recently caught up with Khurasan's 15mm sci-fi offerings and am feeling like that'll happen for me in the next year or two. I'm willing to forgive the... odd weapon designs due to their age. Those sculpts are over 30 years old.

The Redemptionist guy is fairly yellow. The bone Contrast paint has a very worn, yellowed tint to it. Looks good for old bones. It probably doesn't help that I did use a highlight of Vallejo beige over it, too.

The UEF Rangers are actually very chunky for their scale. Makes me very curious how big the 28mm versions are. I'll try and get some size comparisons tonight. One of these guys could probably go to to toe with some of my mechs though.

I've gotten so behind on uploading stuff. I've painted a 15mm drop pod, two squads of infantry, and a Primaris Lieutenant, but I have yet to take pics of any of them.

I did however manage to get pics of my first Zombicide miniature. I got my Invader stuff a couple days ago and managed to actually get a figure done.

When they announced Frank as a playable character, I knew he was probably going to be my go-to survivor. He's a servitor-ized Driller alien! That's awesome! I tried to keep his colors somewhat consistent with the artwork. His sculpt is a little mushy around his face, but you can make out his teeny tiny little eyes. My only complaint about him is that I wish he were bigger.

Also is frank based on someone/something? They do so many homage sculpts and I’m just not sure of most of them.

I honestly don't remember how much shipping was. Probably somewhere around $20 or so.

Frank is a reference to Frankenstein. But in terms of his sculpt, he is not a cameo figure. He is literally one of the enemy aliens from the Blackout expansion made into a playable survivor.

Next up! Kilgore the Headhunter. He's so bizarre looking!

He's also kind of thin and doesn't have the sharpest details. His bandolier of bullets under the skulls on his chest in particular are hard to discern. My lighting doesn't help matters either. His third arm winds up blending into his torso because of the lighting. Plus, his skull isn't standing out so well in these lights, either. Trust me, this figure does look better in person that it does in the pic.

At the very least you should read through the rules so we can actually try the game out this weekend.

I'm surprised you haven't already churned some of these guys out. Considering the amount of figures you've been painting in a week, I'd think you'd be nearly through the base game box by now.

Today, I finished Lieutenant Torriani Massimo. This is the Italian representative. I actually really liked the Marine designs for the game. I just wish they'd had more than two of them sculpted wearing their helmets.

This was just a quick job. There's definitely a loss of detail on these guys from some of the renders and early resin prototypes we've seen. Almost none of the ribbing is present on the undersuit and his odd headset thing is supposed to go around his jaw, but the only bit of it that actually was visible on the sculpt was the glasses. And, of course, my shading is totally lost in the picture. I used a gray wash over the white armor. It doesn't have the stark black linework a black wash gives. It's much more subtle shadows and looks quite good.

Over the weekend, my brother and I met up with BobtheInquisitor at Brookhurst Hobbies and played some Zombicide Invader. We played the Blackout version. It's been a while since I last played a game of Zombicide. I like the gameplay and the whole dark zone aspect of Blackout was an interesting touch. I'm really going to have to put some effort into painting more of the figures. I'd like to someday have the whole game painted up.

There were a few times where it seemed like we were going to lose, but somehow we not only won, but nobody even died!

While we were there, I grabbed a couple of Bones Black figures. One was a Rockmaw/D&D Xorn, and the other was the Maggotcrown Bonesack. I don't know what a Maggotcrown Bonesack is, but it looks like a large, bloated corpse that's reanimated while in the process of being butchered. It's odd. It has bones sprouting out of its finger, bone spikes in its shoulders, and no flesh on its skull. Oh, and it's partially vivisected, as if you didn't notice.

It's hard to tell in the pic, but I painted the inside with Blood for the Blood God, so it's got a very wet look to it. I used Vallejo's dried blood on the exposed bone bits. The head is splotchy, I know. That was intentional. I wanted it to look uneven, as if the blood was drying after having the skin peeled off the skull. It is an odd, kind of gross figure. Big, too. I believe that base is a 60mm that it came with.

Finally, I mentioned that I had finished a drop pod for my 15mm figures, but I never got around to posting pics. Here it is. This is from Clearhorizon Miniatures and is part of their Helldivers subline.

You can build it all closed up, if you want. You would just need to snip off the support struts on its landing legs. Clearhorizon also makes a more detailed opened up version with a fully detailed interior.

Finished a couple more figures tonight. These guys are recent releases from Alternative Armies. They're a part of an experimental little line they're calling Alternative Stars. These guys were sort of a "test the waters" assortment of various, fairly generic sci-fi adventurer types. Plus a gun wielding owlbear.

First, a Nekonari Trooper with SMG. Yes, he's a cat-man. I would love to see more of these guys.

Next we have the nice and generic Star Empire Colonial Trooper with Rifle.

They're pretty simple, single piece figures. I had fun painting them. Yeah, I didn't give them the most interesting paintjobs, but I think they turned out alright.

So, way back in the heady days of Januay 2018, Cold War Miniatures ran a little Kickstarter for some very retro '50s style pulp Hawkman miniatures. The figures were channeling that old school Flash Gordon aesthetic. I would up getting a few figures from it. I finally got around to painting one of them yesterday. They're actually very simple sculpts, so it didn't really need that much work.

My intention was always to give these guys to my dad since he is a fan of this style retro sci-fi. He really seemed to like this one and put him in his display cabinet along with the retro robot army I did for him. I've got two more that someday I'll do. The other two are in actual flying poses though.

I just finished whatever this guy is tonight. I don't know who makes this figure or what he's called. I got him from BobtheInquisitor last weekend. He painted up surprisingly quick.

If you know what this figure is, please let me know.

That Hawkman is a nifty model. I almost backed that KS, but realized that I don't play any games in which those models would fit.

I really, really like the Maggotcrown Bonesack you posted a while back. It may be my monitor, but the open guts look like the inside of a pomegranate to me, which makes the model all the more wonderful in my mind.

The Alternative Armies minis look great. I'm surprised that are 28mm in scale, though, because they are posed like 15mm guys. The bright blue on the Imperial troop pops.

The Hawkman's scheme fits him perfectly. Are you interested in any of Cold War Minis' upcoming Space Mongols?

I'm surprised how good the dragon lord looks with such a bright paint job--I always pictured him with black armor edged in blue, purple or red, which would have been dull in comparison. Excellent choice.

Yep, the Alternative Stars figures are indeed 28mm. Here's a regular human and an old style Marine to compare to.

Speaking of size comparisons, I think I owed some size comparisons of the Nuclear Shrimp 15mm Ranger power armor. I'd taken the pics, but forgot to post them.

So, here's one compared to regular humans in 28mm and 15mm scales.

Pretty chunky. And here is one compared to some 15mm mechs.

Dude could easily go toe-to-toe with a WHISPER or that Duxis.

I got a few more figures painted this week. I also had to replace my hall light. The new one is way brighter. I thought I'd try doing some shots under it and see if it's any better than my bedroom lights. Conclusion: not particularly. It still washes out details like highlights and shadows. Boo.

Here's a Bones Black Rockmaw, which is totally not a Xorn from D&D. Nope.

He's a chunky monster, too. Around the same size as the Maggotcrown Bonesack, which is on a 50 or 60mm base. I actually like this thing. It has a very Mythos-like feel to it. It'd also work great as some kind of alien species in a sci-fi setting. Hell, throw in some of the Nolzur's Xorn as troops and this guy could be a commander for them.

I finally got around to painting the Culexis Assassin Highlord Tamburlaine gave me. I like the concept of these guys, but man, do I ever hate the design. That helmet so soooooo big and doofy looking. How can he even stand up with that thing on his head?

Funny enough, though I hate the Culexis design with a passion, I actually love the version Heresy Labs did. It's kind of funny how much bulking up the suit really helps the look of the design.

Last figure is the fourth survivor from the Soldier Box from the Zombicide: Invader. This is Doctor Fischer. She's supposed to be the one who created Frank.

She's certainly got an Admech vibe going on. But when I'm playing a horror themed survival game, little old lady is not my first choice for a player character. I'm not sure why you'd want to use her. Her abilities aren't that great and her armor is abysmal. Oh well. The survivors from that box are done, now. On to the monsters and figures out how the hell I'm going to paint them.

He's got a funky mask on that reminded me of the mask Ains Ool Gown wears early on in Overlord. That's why I painted it like that.

His good actually has the cog tooth pattern on it, which I painted in white with the teeth in brass. I think the angle of the shot is making it look off.

Well, I've completed Highlord Tamburlaine's challenge. I completed all four of the Chronicles of the Wayfarer figures he gave me to paint, and I'd say I did a relatively decent job on them, too. Tonight I finished the last of the four.

This guy is a Spirit Warden, from one of the other factions whose name escapes me at the moment.

A little hard to photograph since he's all hunched over. He was kind of difficult to paint, too. Lots of deep little crevices all over him that my paint didn't want to seep into.

And I got my first Zombicide abomination painted. This is the Xenium Horror. I didn't do too much with him. Just a base coat and then a drybrush. I probably could have done a bit extra, like the glowly bits that the artwork shows, but I just wanted to be done quickly with it.

Pretty simple scheme, but that's how the artwork looks for it. As far as in-game abilities of this thing, he's actually pretty basic. The thing that really makes him unique is that he spawns two tiles away from the noisiest tile and if it's indoors, he leaves a mold token. Other than that, totally basic. Does a crap ton of damage and takes three hits to kill. The Brood Mother seems like a bigger threat since she comes with a screen of trash mobs to absorb your gunfire.

Hey, you know what I need? Reinforcements for the Weeping Legion. Papa Nurgle needs to spread his love around a bit.

A while back, might've been around Christmas, or possibly my birthday (I don't even remember anymore) Highlord Tamburlaine somehow managed to get his hands on several packs of Dark Legion Legionnaires from Warzone. The old metal ones, that is. I just haven't gotten around to painting them, but this week, that finally changed. I wound up cracking open the blister of Blessed Legionnaires. These guys are surprisingly gribbly.

So, first up, probably my favorite of the bunch is this balding, one-eyed guy whose whole torso is missing skin.

Next is this happy fellow in rags who is missing patches of skin and seems to be infested with large worms. Also, he's apparently been scalped.

Then we get this guy. I think the Dark Soul was channeling its inner Nurgle since he's absolutely covered in pustules. Not sure how pustules show up on bone, but they're there. He's also clearly been shot a few times.

Finally, we have the Incredible Melting Man.

An odd feature among these guys is that they all seem to be missing the skin on their backs. It isn't quite as apparent on the melting man, but it is on the other three. They also all seem to have hoses and tubes running into their guns for some reason. They look like they're running to power packs, but all of their guns except worm guy's all have ammo magazines in them, so I don't think they're using energy weapons. It's odd.

"But Barzam," I hear you asking, "what about that worm infested corpse you promised in the thread title?" Glad you asked. This cheery fellow came into my possession as the prize for that Chronicles of the Wayfarer challenge from Highlord Tamburlaine. The figure comes from the Alien Infestation Kickstarter that Troll Forged did all those years back. I think he goes nicely with this bunch. Maybe I can use him as a Nurgle Ogryn?

Hey, you know what genre I'm not very into? Westerns. Highlord Tamburlaine is really into Weird West stuff, but westerns have never done anything for me. Malifaux is something you'd think would have something that would appeal to me, but I just can't really get into it. Yeah, there's robots, demons, ninjas, samurai, undead, all kinds of stuff, but none of it has ever really clicked for me. Even the disgruntled miners don't appeal to me all that much, and I love the GSC because that's exactly what their whole faction is! The one faction that I do kind of like the look of in Malifaux is the Guild. Their troops have kind of a witch hunter look and feel to them that I do actually find appealing, but that aesthetic was dropped when they transitioned the faction from metal to plastic. Then they just turned into boring, generic cowboys. I have gotten my hands on some of the metal Guild stuff and I am slowly building a warband of them. I just finished a couple of the old metal Guild Guards Saturday night. Honestly, I actually do find them to be surprisingly cool looking.

Trench coats, dual wielding pistols, and swords. They could only become edgier if they were wielding katanas and wearing black coats.

This guy is cool. His pose isn't terribly practical, but he does look cool. My biggest problem with these figures is their swords though. Those things are so thin, I'm afraid to even transport them for fear of breaking the damn things.

And finally, I've started the first of my GSC, the Sanctus. He was more of a test run of my planned color scheme than anything. I'm happy with how it turned out though and he is a really cool looking model. I've got a couple more troops being primed. I'll be starting them up soon, too.

Your guild look good. I have a few random unbuilt guild kits if you want to dork around with colors and stuff. Mostly plastics though, like the mounted guards. A few metals may be in the garage.

Okay, I know it's been a while since I posted anything. That doesn't mean I haven't been painting. I have. I just haven't felt like taking any pics. For those interested, I've painted some more modern Russians, some D&D Tabaxi, a Gug, and a couple of GSC cultists. I've also been working on some Death Guard. I just really haven't had the urge to take and edit photos.

Today, I did something a little different. I've had some of Battle Systems' suburban houses sitting, unopened on my coffee table for a couple months now. Figured, since I've got a four-day weekend, why not actually try building one. So I did!

It's a pretty good sized building. I believe it had about four or five "sprues" of panels for it. The outside sections are all unique to the suburban house. Unlike some of the core box buildings, the house does not have reversible outer tiles. The other side has an interior print.

Like I said, it's a pretty good size. Though, despite it's size, the build you see here doesn't have very many rooms. Just two main rooms, and a back room that connects to the garage. Not ideal for an actual house design. But for a tabletop, I think it would work.

A few interesting bits are included with this set too. This one uses special tiles for the driveway and the lawn. The awning for the porch is also a special piece and the reverse side of it is the porch piece itself. The set also comes with some additional bits, such as the porch railing you see, as well as a wooden picket fence, with bits you can punch out to make it look all decrepit. Same with most of the windows on the house. Almost every one of them can be punched out to make a broken window. The gable pieces are also unique to these sets, as are the roof tiles.

I have three main complaints with the set. The first is actually the interior. It uses the same interior tiles and printing as the regular core box terrain. It's fine there for an office building or an apartment building or something, but it looks off on the interior of a house. Second, there was no interior furniture included. Granted, I have a ton from the core box, but still. If you were just getting a few of these to populate your table and didn't have the core set, there's nothing to really go inside of the house. The only furniture piece it comes with is the same mailbox piece from the core box. Finally, I feel like there just weren't enough external tiles provided. There's more triangular gable pieces that you'd need, more internal walls than you'd need, but not really enough external walls. They give you more internal walls than they do external. The build you see in my photos uses every regular external wall, but I had a pile of internal walls leftover. I think a few more external walls would've been nice. I bet with two of these, or with the two-story house set, you can get some really nice buildings going.

You did not have those push-fit Plague Marines when we last met up, no. I actually have a couple I bought myself a long time ago. They're so tiny compared to their modern cousins.

So, I mentioned I have been painting stuff. I said I painted a couple of Russians, I figured I should get around to taking pics of them. These, like all of my other non-Infinity Russians come from Spectre Miniatures. I'm going to blame the new COD: Modern Warfare remake and Escape from Tarkov for making me want to paint Russians. Dudes in Gorka Suits, in particular.

They're kind of hard to get decent photos of since they're both hunched over in a running/shooting pose. I've actually got a nice little fire team of guys in Gorka Suits now.

So, not even counting the Infinity stuff, I've got a nice little force of modern Russians in a variety of uniforms. I have a squad in multicam, a squad in ATACS, a squad in Gorka Suits, and a squad in solid green fatigues. I've actually got more modern Russians that I haven't painted from Phalanx Consortium, too.

I've also started work on my Zombicide Invader Plague Gang, too. I've finished 3 of 5 as of this post. The first figure I did was Pat. I'm not entirely sure, but I think he's supposed to be an alien. His art shows blue skin visible under his mask.

Aside from him, I've also finished Carmen and Macintyre. I'll post pics of them soon.

So, you've already seen my GSC Sanctus. I've managed to complete a few of the troops from the regular troop box.

we've got a basic shotgunner.

Squad leader with a pickaxe, because of course I had to give him a pickaxe.

And the one I just completed, the banner bearer/Iconward.

Hooded heads are from Mad Robot, the cap the banner bearer is wearing is from Wargames Atlantic.

Finished up my Zombicide Invader Plague Gang. That's my first box completely done.

Finn, the sniper

Sydney, the grenadier (doesn't actually have any grenadier special abilities though. For some reason he's melee focused)

Carmen, a ranged specialist (who has a weird buzzsaw thing)

Macintyre, the heavy

You've also seen Pat already, so here's the whole group.

Wow, I haven't posted an update since November!

I've been painting, but there was a LOT of house sitting that happened in November and December that pretty much prevented me from doing much work. I also have just not wanted to go through the effort of taking photos, editing them, and posting them. Throw in distractions from video games on top of that and I haven't really been the most productive.

Still, as I said, I have been painting.

Let's start with the most time consuming figure of the bunch, Typhus. This is the figure that was made by Wargames Exclusive. This guys is actually probably too busy, sculpt-wise. He just will not photograph well because of it. As you can see, he is not wielding a Man-Reaper. They gave the option of some tonfa type weapons and I just had to go with them for something a little different.

Next, we have the HQ Assassin, also from Wargames Exclusive.

I finally got back to painting Infinity stuff after probably a half-year long hiatus. Started with the PanO Locust.

He was followed up with a Hospitaller Crusader Brethren (whose base isn't quite finished, but the rest of the figure is).

In the fantasy field, I picked up this nasty monster from WizKids' Deep Cuts line. I think it's a flesh golem? It's a gnarly looking monster though, and he's big. He's also painted entirely with washes and Contrast paints.

I painted up one of the Heresy Labs figures I had received from one of their previous Kickstarters. As usual, my camera and lighting do me no favors and all of the shading and highlights are completely washed out. She looks a lot better in person.

This figure also happens to be fairly large. She towers over an actual Chaos Marine.

Speaking of, I painted that Iron Warrior, just for something a bit different from painting Death Guard and Raptors.

Now, for something a little different.

I've been a big fan of GI Joe since I was a kid. I've collected the toys for years. Unfortunately, Hasbro never took the opportunity to combine my love for GI Joe with my love for tabletop gaming. Some fans on the other hand did. This were some fan-made figures with a very limited production run. I've been given permission to show them off, but I can't really give much more info about where to get them or anything. These figures are pretty basic. The sculpts aren't amazing, but they get the job done and they fit in very nicely with my other modern stuff. I don't have any Joes, but I do have a squad of Iron Grenadiers that I'm working on. I keep telling Highlord Tamburlaine we need to have my Cobras try and infiltrate his Amazon temple so they can recover a component of the MASS Device.

Here's their officer.

And the troopers

As with my Lady of Wrath, the camera and my lights washed out most of the details.

I also did Wild Weasel. I imagine that since I don't have a Rattler for him, he'll probably just wind up being a glorified objective token.

Finally, last night I painted one whole 15mm figure!

This is one of Ground Zero Games' New Israeli Heavy Infantry resculpts. I've had him and pretty much a full squad for a while, just haven't done anything with them. I couldn't decide on a color scheme. Their very Spartan-like design would probably lend itself very nicely to greens, but that just seems like it'd be an overdone color scheme for them. I tried something a little different and tried adapting Spartan Carter's colors from Halo Reach.

I'm not sure I care for the results. I don't want to do a full squad in these colors and I'm not feeling the gunmetal sections. I feel like white could look good, but that's going to look too much like those unproduced Micropanzer figures I'd painted. I'm always open to suggestions.

That golem is fantastic. I mean, they’re all fantastic, but I appreciate a paint job of just washes and contrast paint, especially when it turns out so well. Truly an inspiration.

Can you believe I haven't touched this thread since January?

I've been painting. I just haven't been posting very much. mostly just on Instagram. My painting progress has been very slow, too. Partially, I blame Fallout 4 for sucking up my time. Warframe, too. But, like I said, I've been painting stuff. Here's a few items I've painted over the months.

Rogue Stars Sniper bot

A mutant ganger from The Others, one of a number of random mutants I got from my brother.

Another random mutant. I'm quite proud of this one. This is a Hex Beast from Wild West Exodus. He's also really big.

This guy is one of Die Auserwahlten, from Achtung Cthulhu. Now, I know in the picture he looks bright pink and rather undetailed. That's not how he looks in person! As usual, my photography skills and lighting suck. It's actually a much darker, meatier looking color scheme, like raw muscle. I'm going to try doing something a bit different with the other two, though.

This is a 28mm Ion Age Nox, which has been sitting on my desk for a VERY long time. I had finally just buckled down and finished up a month or two ago. An interesting thing about these guys, the Shia Khan troops are actually space elves. This guy is an evil space elf in power armor that's intentionally designed to look like a monster. You don't see stuff like that much in tabletop gaming or sci-fi in general.

Next we have a pressganged civillian fighter from Carnevale that I got from my brother.

Not the best pic, but this is a Nuclear Sandlot figure from Brother Vinni. Very clearly meant to look like a NCR Ranger.

Finally, I finally got myself to finish my Chaos Obliterator. Now my Weeping Legion have some heavy support, even if it isn't actually legal in regular 40k.

Welcome back. That hexbeast is weird and gross. Also, I never knew that Shia Khan were supposed to be space elves. I have a bunch of Firefight levies that I used to use as Imperial Guard, and I used shia khan models as weapons crews.

Hex Beast turned out well. I've got plenty more random stuff I can toss your way this week too, if you're interested!

Am I responsible for that Obliterator? I can't remember.

I'm really happy with how the Hex Beast came out. I've been looking for mutants to use in Zona Alfa, and I think he'll be perfect. I got some other mutants from Highlord Tamburlaine from The Other Side along with him. Some of those would work well, too. Just a matter of actually getting to them.

Regarding the Shia Khan, most of the models of them, in either 28 and 15mm don't depict them without at their helmets. However, there are a smattering that are without. There's about four special release 15mm figures that have them without helmets and there's a 28mm Nox with his helmet open. They're supposed to be elves. At the very least, they're very humanoid aliens.

Highlord Tamburlaine, I could be down for some more mutant scum. That Obliterator though is definitely mine. I got him off Ebay. You gave me a trio of Hitech Oblits, though. I painted one of them up as an Iron Warrior. I thought I'd posted him, but it looks like that was just on Instagram. I'll have to post him here.

Plague Marine Raptors are totally not something that you can run in 40k, unfortunately. You can run Raptors with Mark of Nurgle though. Not quite the same thing, plus you have to run them as an allied detachment, I believe. Not so with Grimdark Future, which was what I made these guys for.

These figures were more complex than they look. I had to remove all of the lightning details from their legs, resculpt some of the details, and modify the bodies to actually fit the backpacks. And because I really don't like working with Green Stuff, that meant that these guys sat in an unfinished state for a LOOOOONG time. I am happy to say that they are finally, fully finished.

Boy, sourcing those torsos sucked. Those things are out of production. I'm pretty sure these are actually bootlegs of them, but they get the job done and the detail was still pretty good.

Small update. I just finished painting this Guard Commander figure.

This guy is actually a resin 3D print from Thingiverse. The file is actually a remix/rescale of another person's stl for an Epic scale Guard Commander. The guys liked it so much he scaled it up and fixed it up for printing at 28mm.

Something I've decided to do recently, because I don't have enough unfinished projects or minis taking sup space, is make another skirmish warband. Thanks to the miracle of 3D printing, I get access to all sorts of interesting things.

Highlorn Tamburlaine is a patron of The Makers Cult and he's managed to get his hands on quite a few of their stls. Something rather unique about them is that they make pretty much a complete Thunder Warrior army. So, I've decided I would make myself a small skirmish warband of Thunder Warriors. Now, I can't just do any old Legion though. I've already got traitor and loyalist Death Guard, I figured why not do their pre-Primarch rendition? So, Dusk Raiders it is!

So far, I've got three figures for the warband complete with a fourth nearly done. I have a handful left still to go though. Really, what's holding me back is that I need to print up a few more bases.

Most likely I'll be running these guys as Primaris proxies for Grimdark Future: Firefight.

First, we have the warband's hero, the Greenskin Slayer. I did him first as a test run. I still need to add the line highlights to him and finish painting his base before I can call him done. He will probably proxy as a Lieutenant.

Next we have the first one I actually finished, the Intercessor Sergeant.

Next is a proxy for a standard Intercessor

Then we have my most recent, completed last night, the RTO/ Spotter.

This guy belongs to a squad of snipers. I have two snipers, which will proxy as Eliminators. I think I'll use their spotter as a regular Intercessor though since there's no rules for a spotter or a Master of Signals, which he could totally stand in for.

This week I'll try and get started on the Eliminator proxies and maybe even start on the Hellblaster proxies.

Something unrelated to the Dusk Raiders that I recent worked on is a generic Chaos Raptor. I forget who designed this, but I really liked the basic, subdued look of this guy. He's part of a full squad with assault and special weapons. Highlord Tamburlaine said these guys were a paint to print though and most of the others in the set had defects.

The base I printed myself. I had a hard time finding a flying stand that I liked, but this one fit the bill quite nicely.

Finally, let's round things out with a new mutant. This happy fellow comes from The Other Side's Cult of the Burning Man. I think I'll be able to get some use out of him.

Those Raptors were a good learning experience though in figuring out how to properly support stuff. Some of those defects may have been due to screen issues, but all their pointy bits needed more supporting, and that's on me

Having seen them all in person I was even more impressed.

Once I've got things up and running again I'll give the rest of those Raptors a shot. Did you print that base yourself?

I think you'll need some Thunder Warrior assault guys too...

They look great, I kinda like the colours. It's funny when you get in the zone with a set of colours isn't it? Radically different things end up in the same palette

Post by: Barzam

I did print the base for the Raptor. You'll notice that it's on the large side. That's because it's actually meant for a Primaris Inceptor, which uses a larger base.

Speaking of Inceptors, Primaris don't actually have jump pack equipped assault troops. So, what I'd actually need would be some more of the Black Knight jump troops. I'll be adding the ones I gave to this warband once I get some bases printed up.

Inmygravenimage, Dusk Raiders are totally a legit thing, and that is their color scheme. It's supposed to be a neutral gray with a deep red right arm, symbolizing their status as the "red hand of the Emperor." They were supposed to have been recruited during the Unification Wars of Earth from Albia, which was one of the Emperor's biggest rivals. He won them over through diplomacy rather than warfare and made them allies. The red right arm shows their high status as the Emperor's right hand.

My red looks a bit bright in my photos, but that's because of my lighting. It's actually much darker and even has highlights.

As far as the palette set goes, I actually painted the Raptor and the mutant weeks ago, well before I started the Dusk Raiders, so they didn't actually share any paint. I was just too lazy to post them when I painted them.
