Thanks, he was pretty fun to paint.

Two new ones. Wraiths, from Frostgrave. I believe these guys are normally NPC creatures, though I think players can summon them, too. Most likely, I'll wind up using them as Infantrymen for my Menoth warband instead since Menoth doesn't actually seem to have anything that fits that particular profile.

Men-at-arms, I think would be the better fit for the Flameguard.

Today, the 10th of April is my 32nd birthday. To celebrate, I took the day off. No way am I going in on my birthday. Instead, I spent a good chunk of the day painting. I'd pulled some old, unfinished minis out of my storage to give to Highlord Tamburlaine on Saturday and, in the process I also pulled out several projects I'd started and never finished. I used my free time today to finish those old projects off. I wound up doing a total of five figures, though two of them are on a single base.

First up, we have the Captain of the Lucky 7th from Incursion, "Slugger" Murphy.

He was the closest of this bunch to actually be done. I wound up having to almost completely repaint him though because he'd suffered so much paint wear in storage. He's finally done now, though. It's a bit hard to tell, but he's chomping on a cigar, so I painted it to be lit. I'm thinking I may use him as an Ogryn in Shadow War.

Everything else I worked on today was from Menoth. I finally got around to finishing the other Flameguard Cleanser figure, though his bayonet seems to have gone missing over the years.

Funny enough, the other Flameguard he came with is one of my highest rated images.

Next we have the loader from the Deliverer Sunburst's crew.

Finally, we have the set that probably took the most work today, the Covenant of Menoth!

I got this years ago, back when I thought I would actually play Warmachine. This set was extremely daunting for me and I could just never bring myself to actually work on it. Over the years, I've somehow lost their original base, so I made a nice scenic one for them using a Proxie Models base and some cork. It's a cool set, but outside of Warmahordes, I really don't have a use for it.

Here's a couple of additional shots showing the details I put on the book's pages.

Continuing with expanding my Menoth Frostgrave army, I present the "small construct."

I thought the Deathripper Bonejack would work decently as the summonable "small" construct. I made sure to give my wizard the Animate Construct ability specifically so I could use Warjacks in the game. I'll most likely use the Dervish as the Medium Construct and the Crusader as the Large Construct.

Tomorrow night, I should finally have my Deliverer Sunburst finished. There's just some highlights left to do on the gunner and painting the base.

Thanks. I'm actually nearly done with my Menoth stuff. I think I have maybe four more actual Menoth models left unpainted. Speaking of, here's that finished Sunburst. I'd been meaning to post it on Friday, but I was barely home all day and I wanted to take the pics in the daylight.

Here's the whole set, with the Sunburst itself and its crew.

Just the Sunburst by itself.

I worked on a few more 15mm items here and there as well. Here's a female Prydian Knight. I was going for something of a Lamenters scheme for her.

I also started working on some ZAS mercs from Critical Mass. Here's the Commander and a pair of drones from their command set.

A closer shot of the commander

and a closer shot of one of the drones, showing that I attempted to camouflage them.

I'm going to attempt to camouflage the rest of my ZAS mercs as well. Hopefully they turn out okay.

I haven't done much painting, just got a couple more Ion Age minis finished. Here's a Nox Trooper and a Malig Trooper, both from Ion Age.

Both figures belong to the Shia Khan Empire faction. The Khanate is basically an amalgamation of several of the "bad guy" factions from 40k. It is at its most basic, an evil mirror of the Prydians, so it's basically the Ion Age equivalent of Chaos. But, it also contains elements of the Eldar (the Legionnaires), the Necron (Psychoborgs), and Orks/goblins (the maligs). The Nox are equivalent to the Prydian Desteria, so in 40k terms, they're Chaos Terminators. The Maligs are the cheap cannon fodder foot soldiers that the Khanate uses, so they would pretty much be equivalent to the Chaos Cultists in 40k. The Khanate is actually supposed to be an amalgamation of multiple alien species, like the Covenant, so that's why there's clearly different races among their troops. The Nox are actually the same species as the Legionnaires and the Pioneers, which appears to be space elves. Psychoborgs, which are evil robots and several other species are supposed to be showing up sometime within the year, though you can actually purchase old Psychoborg models from Alternative Armies.

Tonight, I didn't get any real painting done because I actually made time to play a game. I know I've talked about Red Ops 5 before, but until now, I haven't been able to play it. The main reason being that you need about ten zombies per player figure, and you're supposed to have a team of four guys. So, I didn't have 40 zombies ready to play. I only just recently passed that number in 28mm, so I figured I'd give it a try. Hoo boy, was it tough.

So, I tried to simplify the game a bit for my first try. Instead of trying to rescue as many civillians as possible, I thought it would be easier on me to cut it down to just three. Shouldn't be too hard right? I decided to use one of the game boards from Mercs Recon as the setting. A team of four mercs, the Boss(smg), Bergil(smg), Freak(smg}, and Alien(shotgun) had to get into an office building, search the offices for three surviving employees, and get them out either through the two stairwells or the two elevators.

It started off okay. The team came in through the elevators into an empty hallway. Four offices were in front of them, and two on either end of the hall, with the hallway making a right angled turn at either side. The team moved to the left side of the hallway unopposed and I figured they wouldn't get anywhere without actually checking the offices. So, they checked the closest office towards the left-hand corner. Boom! First bit of bad luck, two zombies were inside. The Boss beat back the first while Alien shotgunned the second, splattering it across the walls. Quickly pulling back, the slammed the door on the remaining zombie, effectively locking it inside. The team lucked out and no zombies were alerted by the shotgun blast from Alien. They moved into the next hallway, only to discover a crowd of ten zombies waiting.

Things kicked into high gear pretty damn fast. I didn't want the team getting swarmed by the undead, so they opened up on them. Firing on enemies in this game is a gamble. If you're unlucky, the gunshots will spawn new zombies all over the game board. On top of that, other zombies will move in the direction of the gunshots. So, thankfully, the team got good rolls and took out at least half of the zombies in the hall, but more were alerted by the sounds of the firefight. The team was huddled in a tight group in the end of the hallway near a pair of corner offices and more zombies started crawling out of the woodwork ahead of them. Bergil, taking a chance, opened one of the corner offices and to his surprise, actually found one of the surviving employees. Things were going okay, so far.

My team only managed to make it in about 8" onto the board before they were effectively stopped due to zombies spawning in. The office that the civvie was in was directly to the team's left, but the office immediately behind them was full of zombies. More and more were showing up in there because of all of the gunfire and it was only a matter of time before they busted down the door. At this point, my team's luck ran out. A botched activation roll resulted in the zombies activating before me and the horde came bursting out of the office behind my guys. The zombies in the hall were still coming, too. So, my team was stuck between two hordes of walking corpses and Bergil had the misfortune of being right in front of the door when the zombies burst through. My team tried to fend them off, but due to another botched activation roll, they rear horde swarmed Begil, knocked him down and immediately began eating him. The civvie panicked and bolted. He made it past the horde and into the elevators, earning me a win there. Unfortunately, the horde in the office came pouring out and my team had to back up. With all of the noise, more zombies were smashing their way out of the adjacent offices and a third swarm came in fron the opposite end of the hallway.

So, my team never left the hall they started in. They were now boxed in with swarms coming at them from both sides of the hall and coming through the offices that lined the hallway. There wasn't anything I could do, so I had the team retreat. Freak and Alien made their escape in the elevators while the Boss made a heroic last stand to buy them time. Somehow, the Boss managed to hold the zombies off during the zombie turn. He gunned down several that charged him and then managed to run out of ammo. The zombies kept coming, but thanks to the fact that the Boss was the star, he was able to tweak some of the rolls in his favor, allowing him to heroically beat back the zombies with his empty gun until it was his turn to activate. In heroic fashion, he was able to escape through the elevators, miraculously taking no damage.

So, overall, the game quickly turned into a disaster for me. My team got swarmed almost immediately and losing Bergil was basically the nail in the coffin. I think next time I play it, I'm going to have to take notes so I can give a more fluffy batrep.

Why no Red Ops pics?

Where's your team that got wasted heroically at least?

I'm wondering if Mercs Recon's office tiles would work well for this- or did you just use the Battlesystems terrain you have?

Sorry, no in-game pics.

Here's the team that I used though.

The guy second from the left is Bergil. He's the one that got eaten.

It was one of the Mercs tile sets that I used. Battlesystem would certainly be good for a larger game. The thing is, the game seems to be made more for close, indoor, claustrophobic settings. The scenario that they give in the rulebook is for clearing out an apartment complex. Certainly outdoors settings will work, but it seems best suited to indoors stuff.

I finished my Savage Core Amazons tonight. I posted the first figure I finished from the set a page or two ago, but here's the other two.

And yes, I actually painted an eye on the blonde one. The blowgun one's eyes aren't really visible or easy to get to, so I didn't bother with her. I like these figures though. I imagine when I get to my Shadow Sea Axibalan, they'll fit in quite nicely.

I also painted a random Space Marine Scout.

I'll admit, I've been playing Doom (Brutal Doom, actually) and that's what inspired me to paint this guy. For some reason, I always get Doomguy vibes from the Scouts. I can just picture this guy running through a Space Hulk screaming "Who's a man and a half? I'm a man and a half!" While blasting Genestealers in the face.

Lastly, another tiny figure. This is the ZAS Medic, from the ZAS Command Pack.

Another Critical Mass figure. On this guy, I tried doing things a little different from how I did the Commander. Before, I painted the camo on first, then hit the figure with a gloss Nuln Oil wash. This time, I hit him with a regular Nuln Oil wash, highlighted, then added the camo. It takes a few more steps, but I think the results are a bit better. The camo is certainly more visible this time.

That would be pretty amazing if it were a Power Bat. But, no. Just a regular nailbat. The cable is actually just a braided rope that's keeping the bat clipped to his armor. You can't see it at all in the pic, but there's actually a carabiner on the end of the rope clipped to a ring on the bottom of the bat. The figure has tons of little details like that all over him.

I wanted a quick break from fantasy and on Friday, I got inspired to work on some Mantic plastics. So, I went into my closet and hunted down the single sprue of Asterian Marionettes I bought from the Warpath Kickstarter. I figured they'd be a quick batch to paint up. I was right, too. Once they were ready for paint, they painted up real quick, and look good, too.

I haven't really seen many people paint these guys yet. They're actually really nice plastics. Very sharp details. You may be able to see that I left most of the mold lines, but I didn't really care. They're not that obtrusive. I think I may go back and redo the few Cyphers I've painted to more or less match these guys, as I'm rather fond of this color scheme. I do have their support drone all assembled, but I'm currently in the process of painting it. I also bashed the bits from the Comms and Camo support drones together to build a full second drone. I should have them done in the next few days.

I was a bit disappointed by the Cyphers, mostly due to the material. These guys blow the Cyphers away though. I almost wish I'd bought more. Nice to hear that you guys like them. As for the not-Soul Stones on their backs, they really do look like they would be the weak point a player would need to attack to destroy them in a video game. They have a number of little circular indentations on them that suit them very nicely for a glowy Tron-like aesthetic. The glowy lights are totally impractical, but they look cool.

Asterian Support Drones are now finished. How about that, I actually completed a project!

There's three types of support drones available to the Marionettes: Gun, Camo, and Comms. There's parts to build all three on the Marionette sprue, but only one stand and one bottom piece that mounts onto the stand. No other parts are shared between them. So, I built the Gun Drone straight, which is on the left, and kitbashed the other two together to make a full second drone. I believe that's the Camo type that I've used for the main body and the Comms type that's forming the propulsion unit. They're cool little minis and they were actually kind of a nice change from the usual humanoid figures I've been painting.

Oh, and for those who are into kitbashing, that Camo Drone is almost the exact same size as an Imperial Knight's head. It'd make a pretty kick-ass Knight head.

Hobby ADHD continues. As I try to focus on painting some gnolls, I find myself drifting to other projects. CAV minis... 15mm.... Anvil Industry stuff. Today was no different, though I at least did nearly finish one gnoll.

Here's another ZAS figure I finished today. This is another figure from the command squad. This guy is their comms specialist.

And probably of more interest to people around here, I couldn't keep myself waiting any longer and started working on one of my Anvil Industry Trench Fighters. He just needs basing now. Otherwise, he's totally finished.

I may work on others as the week goes on. The eventual plan for these guys is going to be to use them in Shadow War Armageddon as an IG Kill Team. I'm sure they'll get butchered, but at least they'll look cool while they die heroically.

Speaking of dying heroically, I got in another game of Frostgrave over the weekend. My Menoth warband faced off with BobtheInquisitor's team. I got seriously trounced this time around. Only three of my guys made it out alive. Thankfully, on the survival table, my wizard and the apprentice both survived, though the apprentice came out with a smashed jaw. Now I have to rebuild my warband. So, don't be surprised if you see some more Menoth themed guys showing up in here again.

Hey, success! I actually finished two gnolls today!

The smaller gnoll is a Frostgrave plastic. The bigger one is from Wizkids' new D&D/Pathfinder line of unpainted plastic minis. I like how big their gnolls are, but the casting quality isn't the best. A lot of his details are sadly kind of soft. Areas like his belt, which I think are made of teeth and his shirt are the problem spots. I seriously can't tell what's going on with his belt. The shirt, I can't tell what areas are supposed to be shirt, and what's supposed to be skin. I kind of guessed when I painted those spots. His axe is also warped to all hell. Still, he'll probably make a good barbarian in Frostgrave.

I'm just trying to get these guys done, so I'm not spending a ton of time on them, cleaning their paintjobs up or doing highlights. Just paint, wash, base, done. I tried to go for more of a Striped Hyena look on this particular guy, just to be a bit different.

Now, I am putting more work into the Trench Fighters. Got another of them finished today, too.

I really like this guy. He's got a damn pickaxe! Although, the previous guy had an entrenching too, a mace, and a spoon for melee weapons.

The gnolls' paint jobs really work for them. Too clean and they'd be hyenakin or something, and someone might mistake them for dogs. I'd like to see what you do with one of the Tre Manor Bones gnolls. They're still my favorite gnolls.

The trenchers look great. Is that chainmail on their faces?

Anyway I'm glad your wizard is okay and hope your apprentice has a speedy recovery.

All of my trenchers are wearing visors similar to the splinter masks WWI tank crewmen wore. Some of the heads in the set have full-face masks, too. Anvil designed them to have more of a gladiator feel to them, which I think works pretty nicely for trench fighters.

Ooooh weeee! Tonight was a doozy! I finished the last of the plastic gnolls!

Next step for that lot, make a wizard for them so I can run an entirely gnoll/hyena based Frostgrave warband.

The big accomplishment of tonight though, I painted my Forsaker!

and a bit of a more detailed look at his bone sword.

I love the design of these guys and I was so disappointed that none wound up in KDM. Sure, the Butcher is technically a Forsaker, but it's just not the same. I was so worried I would somehow mess this guy up though. Kingdom Death, like Infinity is one of those lines where I'm afraid if I start painting, somehow I'll screw the figure up. Not only am I extremely happy with how he turned out, but I didn't even break him once! And he's got some thin, tiny pieces, too. I'm kind of afraid to even handle him, those pieces are so thin and tiny. This guy is probably a figure I'll never be able to transport due to how easily he'll break. Still, I love this model and I'm so happy to have one.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
One more pic, this one larger and under different lighting. The bone details on his mask weren't coming out too well in the previous pic.

Everyone who has read The Tick comics knows that the mace and entrenching tools are for melee, while the spoon is used as you charge into battle .

Don't worry Bob, I know Highlord Tamburlaine has a pile more of those gnoll sprues. Hell, I have a bunch of spare gnoll heads myself, I just need one with the mask on to make things a bit easier.

It seems that the Forsaker was a pretty popular figure. I suppose I'll have to actually paint some more Kingdom Death minis sometime.

For now, I finished my ZAS Command Squad from Critical Mass Games. The last figure was the generic officer. I guess he's supposed to be used as a squad leader? I can move on to some other 15mm figures now that I've finished that command squad.

Also, finished my third Trench Fighter.

The fourth Trench Fighter is finished. One more to go!

About a week or so ago, I came across a bunch of old metal Catachans in the consignment case at the FLGS. I figured, what the hell? Bought a set of them and I figure I'll paint them and then try to resell them in the case when I'm done. I didn't want to do anything too crazy with them though, so no camo or eyes. Here's the first figure, the old female grenadier.

This figure is clearly channeling Vasquez from Aliens. After painting her, I noticed that her sculpt is very similar to that of some of the female figures from Void. I wouldn't be surprised if they shared the same sculptor.

I actually don't. The ones I had are at Pegasus in the consignment case. But, just compare her to the various marine sculpts from Void, there's a lot of similarities.

Last Trench Fighter is finished. This one's probably my least favorite since none of the arms other than the shooting ones really looked all that good with the kneeling legs.

Now they just need basing and they'll be completely finished!

I also painted up two more metal Catachans.

Yeah, I know the running guy's teeth look weird. That mostly because of the lighting.

I finished off the Trench Fighters today. They just needed their basing done. Now I have about half of my planned Shadow War: Armageddon warband finished.

I'd placed an order for some parts from Anvil and Mad Robot last Friday to finish off the warband. I got the Mad Robot bits today, so hopefully the Anvil bits will arrive soon.

First update in today's post, I painted something random. This is the engineer class figure from Greenbriar Games' Zpocalypse.

She does have a face, it's just hidden by shadow and her helmet. I did not see that paint blob on the back of her leg until I took this picture though. I'll have to fix that. And yes, she does indeed have a little RC robot drone on her back. In game, she's supposed to be able to deploy it.

Next, I did about twelve 15mm figures this week, all space themed. All of the figures come from Ground Zero Games' Stargrunt line and both pics are much bigger and zoomable in my gallery.

First, we've got the Starship Crew in heavy-duty vacuum suits. They look awfully familiar, don't they?

These guys I believe are also available with weapons and in zero-g floating poses.

Next, you'll probably recognize these guys. I painted a whole one up a long while back. I finally got the bug to paint a set of them up. These are US Marine Corps Extra-Planetary Expeditionary Force Luna troops, or just plainly, Space Marines. Proper Space Marines at that.

Depending on how long I have this itch to paint space figures, I may actually do more of the Space Marines. I still have the other pack of the USMCEPEFL riflement, rocket launchers, rover, and rocket sled, plus I have some OPFOR still in the form of the People's Liberation Army Space Force, their rover, and I have more civvies in space suits.

Ain't Starcom without any magnets though.

Nostromo crew look good. You need some 15mm alien eggs now. I'd imagine Khurasan has some, seeing as how they made those guys.

Those Space Marines look like they're wearing cricket pads

Post by: Barzam

I've gotten that cricket pad comment a number of times about them. I think the sculptor was trying to visually reference the suits from Alien and Alien 3 a bit. Regardless, and despite the fact that they do look kind of like cricket pads, I love the look of them.

I got the rest of my Kill Team's parts assembled tonight. The plan is to work on them one at a time and hopefully, get one done a day this week.

Click the pic to see a larger, zoomable pic in my gallery. The figures are a hodge podge of Mad Robot and Anvil Industries bits. You've seen my Veteran Guardsmen with carapace armor and shotguns, these guys are going to be my Recruit Guardsmen with las rifles, veteran sergeant, and special weapons operators with plasma rifles. I've tried to go for a WYSIWYG with them. They all have scopes (can be telescopic or holographic) with laser sights. Troopers both have spare clips, so they have reloads. Sergeant has a las pistol and a power sword. I have a number of spare parts leftover though, I may make another order to kit out a few more guys.

The look like an excellent gang, hopefully you get lots of playtime with them.

As for a day off......you now need to paint up enough for a small 40k add on unit. Then to have them as the main 40k army......then to have enough for an apocalypse sized game. that's usually my mindset.

First update of June, but it's a small one.

I finally got around to finishing up my second Martian Orbital Fusilier.

I've also been working on the next batch of civvie astronauts from Ground Zero Games. This time, it's the guys in the light-duty spacesuits. Currently, only 2 are done, but the other 6 are nearly finished. I should have the whole batch done by tomorrow.

I also painted up some of those Ion Age movement trays, which you see them in. I did two in black, like that one, and two in brown.

Also painted up a Xin hero character from Ion Age. This is Commander Gongji.

He was the freebie back in February. I figured I'd use actual metallics on him since he's a named hero. might as well have him stand out.

Here he is on one of the brown bases I did, alongside the unnamed female Yoaxie they did as a freebie a while back.

I got the final two of my old metal Catachans finished today. As you can see, I even tried painting their eyes this time.

I feel like I should be re-enacting Contra with these guys.

And the whole bunch.

More importantly though, I painted more astronauts. These are the last of my civillian ones, but definitely not the last of my astronauts.

These guys are from Alternative Armies. They're supposed to be space fighter pilots, but yeah, they're just astronauts. Their sculpts are a bit crude, as I think they may be from the old Laserburn line. But, at this scale, that crudeness isn't really noticeable at tabletop level.

And here's my full set of 8 astronauts in light-duty spacesuits.

They kind of remind me of the old Action Force Space Force guys. Now, if only there were more games that had combat in a vacuum.

Yeah, I don't think my 15mm stuff is particularly popular. Still, I enjoy painting them, and that's all that matters. Besides, it's not like I've stopped painting 28mm figures.

Speaking of, I agree, those old metal GW figures have way more personality to them than a lot of the plastics. I think GW's improved a lot recently with the plastics though and they are starting to approach the level of character the old metals had.

And since we're on the topic of 28mm minis, I did paint another. Tonight I finished my Menoth Reclaimer. I'm not entirely sure what he does in Warmachine, I think it has something to do with mana generation or something, but for Frostgrave, I think he'll make a hell of an apothecary!

And yes, I did paint more 15mm figures. I finished another squad of not-Space Marines.

Yeah, there's no 15mm gaming community here, either. Hell, not much of a 28mm one, for that matter. Until I have enough to force others into playing some 15mm rulesets, I'm going to have to stick to solo rules. They are really fun to paint though.

I painted some Shia Khan Empire figures this week. A few from the Maia squad set. Two males, one female. The unhelmetted one is the female, obviously. She was actually a montly freebie. I figured if I was getting her as a freebie anyway, I might as well buy the squad. I'll have to paint up a few more of those guys soon.

The guns they're armed with are called a Maia MPI. It's a high caliber SMG, supposed to have a high rate of fire and is best used in urban operations. I figured since they're more for street combat, I ought to go for more of an urban scheme on them. I'll paint the rest up to match.

Another Khanate unit I painted up is the newly released Psychoborg.

These guys are robot heavy support troops for the Khanate Legions. They're supposed to be armed with some kind of psychic weapon that causes crippling fear in humans. The Khanate has a habit of letting them loose into urban areas where they act as terror weapons. Because of that, they can actually be fielded in-game singly, but they can also be deployed in squads.

Lastly, I got my Chinese Lunar Troops from Moongrunt painted.

I really like these figures. Gonna need to buy at least another pack of them.

ShasO, those are the odd hover tanks from Maschinen Krieger, right? You can get some pretty close approximations of those in 15mm, too! Because, of course you can.

Grim, the astronauts are favorites of mine, too. I think they might be my favorites from GZG. Unfortunately, I'm starting to run low on 1-yen coins, so I may have to hold off for a while before I can get to the rest of them. Too bad there aren't many similar figures in 28mm. only ones I can think of are from Victory Force, and those don't look nearly as cool.

I'm pretty sure they're based on the spacesuits Picard and crew wore in First Contact.

I've got a few more 15mm figures I'm working on before I get to some 28mm stuff. Fear not! I will be painting 28mm miniatures in the very near future.

for now, I finished my third Duxis battlesuit tonight.

This one is equipped for anti-infantry, armed with a dual machine-gun. The power fist is standard. I actually included the heraldic shield on this one.

I also got around to painting an alien I've had for way too long. This guy was yet another of Ion Age's monthly freebies. He's supposed to be a Prang Ambassador.

He's also supposed to be a good guy and a named character, but I don't remember what his name is. Personally, I think he makes a better mob boss or gangster than he does an ambassador. Even moreso when I have him hang out with my only other Prang, the Raider machingunner.

Looks like he's out to collect some "protection" money with his bodyguard.

I do wish I had Dagon, but, no room. He'd go nicely with my Dark Mariners, too.

So, I said I'd paint the hillbilly and the sea captain by the weekend. Well, I'm already done with both of them. The Dark Young, too.

Feast your eyes on the Dark Young.

Not as huge as you might think, but still pretty big.

And now, the best figures in my collection, a pair of old guys!

Yup. That hillbilly's got no shoes and a jug 'o moonshine. I love these figures. Their one "downside" is that they're actually kind of big. Like, these are closer to 35mm, big. That sea captain is bulkier and taller than most of my Morats. While they won't fit in well with most 28mm lines, they will fit in with Shadows of Brimstone. Possibly even Malifaux, though they'll be the bulkiest guys around.

Now that those three are done, I'm going to move onto some more Deep Ones and some metal stuff.

Post by: Barzam

Weirdly enough, the hillbilly appears to be a resculpt of this figure.

And while there isn't a Gilligan in the set, there is what appears to be another sailor. An equally crusty, filthy, and drunken looking sailor.

I was home sick from work today, but I didn't let that stop me from getting in some painting time. I painted up one of my 28mm Kahnate Legionnaires. This one is an officer of some sort. I like how the 28mm versions have so much junk strapped to them. There's a slight casting imperfection with this figure though. His rebreather hose looks to have had an air bubble in it. Thankfully, it's not that noticeable or that bad. It's a cool figure though. I have two more of them to do. I feel like they would work well as Space Cops for Rogue Stars or something.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Just banged out a second Legionnaire tonight. This one is armed with a Maia smg and grenades. For some reason, he has a very different helmet from the rest of the line. I don't know what's up with that.

The last of my 28mm Khanate Legionnaires is now finished. This one is armed with a Hydra Laser Shotgun. Weirdly enough, this loadout seems to be missing in the 15mm line.

Up next, a couple more Deep Ones.

Cool figure, but I'm not terribly happy with how his base turned out. I am more or less pleased with how his crystal ammunition turned out though.

I've got a Death Guard model coming soon, so I'm going to work on him next, once he shows up. Once he's done, I'm going to work on more Dark Mariners and MERCS figures, among other things.

Dark Mariner looking good!

Oh I can adapt parts onto the Ma.K tanks, I will have to for weapons, and segmented armor parts, but their body armor of the new kind has rounded sections and all that.

I got around to completing my MERCS House 4 Sapper.

I did a little modding on him. The prototype figure shown in promo materials has his shotgun aiming down, but the production figure has it aiming up, for some reason. I wasn't a fan, so I clipped the pegs on his arms and was going to go with the lower aim pose. Unfortunately, I didn't really like the way the stock arms looked. The shoulders were massive. So, I made the decision to mod him. I had some trouble looking for something that was vaguely shotgun like, but eventually wound up settling on some Mantic GCPS arms. I think they worked out pretty well. I'm even wiling to suspend my disbelief and say that he's got a shotgun. I know those mold lines look bad in the photos, but they're really not very noticeable in person.

The arms fit well. What size is that base?

You need to paint four 'X's on that 'shine jug the hillbilly is carrying.

Red Harvest - the base is 30mm. All the MERCS figures use 30mm. And yeah, I know I need to add some Xs to the jug.

I'm really disappointed in how the pic made that House 4 guy's sculpt look all jagged and messed up in some spots. It really doesn't look like that in person.

I got my Noxious Blightbringer in the mail yesterday and got started on him today. While working on him though, I also painted up a random Toughest Girls Iron Empire trooper that was sitting primed and unpainted on my table.

I know, the colors don't match how I painted my previous Iron Empire figures. I was curious how my Prussian scheme would look on her and, as it turned out, I liked it.

Hoo wee! This guy took me longer than usual. I just finished up my Blightbringer on the 4th of July. He's a big fella, but somehow he still manages to be dwarfed by most of my Dark Mariners.

Now, I know he looks very green, but that wasn't what I was actually going for. I was trying to paint him up to go with the Weeping Legion. I have Vallejo colors that are very close to the ones used in the Warhammer TV tutorial, but for whatever reason, he turned out looking more green than the weird grayish tan he should've been.

I bet he's really noisy when he walks.

Ask and ye shall receive! Dark Mariners are quite big. These two are both regular troops, too.

Here's some heavy support for my Dark Mariners. Technically, the Destroyer Biomech is from Shadowsea, but since all Dark Mariners are amphibious, I can use him in either game.

And here is the Cephalid Biomancer. I believe these guys are the ones who create the biomechs. I think you may need one to actually field them as well, but I'm not entirely sure about that.

You can also see the difference in lighting I get between taking photos in the daylight versus at night. I've got just one more Dark Mariner left in my collection that requires painting, and that's the Annihilator Biomech. I'll have a few new additions after the current Kickstarter delivers though.

Thanks, all. I'm just happy I've been able to keep my dark Mariners consistent. It's been a long time since I painted my last batch.

Tonight's update is a bit... weird? After posting a Plague Marine, Dark Mariners, Toughest Girls, etc, who would've expected me to post something as random as a Cephalyx and a dog?

Here's the Cephalyx controller from my Drudge set, finally painted. Maybe I'll actually finish up his other two Drudges someday.

My original idea for him was to use him as some kind of whacked out Magos Biologis, or a Dark Mechanicum Techpriest. The Magos Biologis idea really appealed to me, so I decided to go with sort of a surgeon scheme. In the Gaunt's Ghosts novels, they mention that the surgeons wear red scrubs, so I went with that here. Since I wanted a surgeon theme, he's gotta have some blood splatters on him, right? I'm pretty happy with how he turned out. I love how creepy looking the Cephaylx are.

Here's the other figure I painted tonight. an Alien-hunting Scotty from RBJ Games.

As you can see, he's caught himself an alien grub. This guy's a tiny little figure, so he was a breeze to paint. What took the longest with him was waiting for his base to dry.

Here you can see just how tiny he is.

I could always use more 28mm dogs. I think Empress makes a couple of 28mm Dachshunds. I should buy them.

Your mechanicus color scheme works well for the Cephalyx. Maybe you need more now? That big centipede Cryx caster would be an interesting one, despite the crazy price on it.

Doge came out good. Much fur. Such hunting skills. Wow.

No, I don't need more Cephalyx, even if I like them. I'm going to try and sell off the whole set once they're all finished.

Tonight, I did finish another Deepwars figure. This time, it's Marie Du Chatelet, a scientist for the Fortune Hunters.

That's actually, finally, three out of the five figures from the deluxe Fortune Hunter starter set I have finally finished!

Also completed were a pair of Unity Guards from Anvil Industries' Afterlife range.

It feels like I haven't finished anything in a while. I managed a batch of five this week.

First, the Everassur, from Cybertronic. I love this gorilla looking dude. He has so much junk bolted onto him. I'm amused by the fact that even if he were to stand upright, his arms would probably still touch the ground.

Next, I've had this Deadzone Reb sitting on my desk, primed for a while. Only problem was, he was missing his right arm. I have no clue where it went. Fed up with staring at him, I lopped off his other arm and scrounged up some new ones. The new arms came from, I think, an AE-WWII American officer. They're from an AE-WWII figure, regardless. Despite the trouble I get from gluing those figures together, the arms went on without a problem on this guy.

I should probably scrounge up a rifle to stick on his back though, that way he matches his stats.

Lastly, three Pox Walkers. These guys were fun to paint.

I bet they'd go real nice with my Plague. I think the fat one with the bone shards coming out of his bulbous arms is my favorite. he would really fit in with the Plague.

Really neat poxwalkers, you guys are all getting to the nurgle stuff and now I'm sorely tempted to buy in . I do like the middle guy the best of the three, but that might just be because he's modest and wears pants .

Reb figure came out great, but I do think he deserves an overly large rifle on his back like you suggested.

Reb does need a gun. I'll have to scrounge one up for him.

The dog is neat. RBJ also has a sitting version, minus the grub, but it only comes with an officer figure.

Here's today's update.

This is another Buffalo Powered Armor from AE-WWII. This guy is going to be my Counts-As Ogryn for Shadow War: Armageddon. This now completes my force since he was the only Spec-Ops unit I was missing.

I really hate GW's Ogryn. They just look too stupid. I wanted something that would also fit the diesel-punk vibe of my Guardsmen, so I figured some Weird War power armor would be a good stand-in for an Ogryn. The Incursion APE Suits would be perfect, but the one I have doesn't really fit the loadout properly and the other types are strangely expensive online. I lucked out and found another of the AE-WWII suits at the FLGS, so I knew I had to use that one.

The loadout on this one is the same that I used on my previous Buffalo, but the pose is different and I used a different color scheme. I used the same shade of green here that I used on the Guardsmen's armor. I figured it would be too bland though, so it needed a bit of pizazz, hence the checkerboards and hazard stripes. At least now having the bounty on Ogryns kind of makes sense, since my guys would be using some (for Guard) unusual tech for their heavy support. Non-Astartes power armor is weirdly rare in 40k, so I would imagine most forces would be interested in getting their hands on something like this.

The armor seems too thin on that model. Needs to be much rounder, which is no fault of yours.

Totally reminds me of a dorvak suit or one of the maschinen krieger suits.

So am I to assume you read the rules for Shadow War finally? Want to give it a try this weekend against my Necrons?

Tonight's update is Amelial, Herald of the Void. She hails from the Void faction of Relic Knights. Since this is a restic figure from the "Dark Ages" of restic, her details are kind of shallow and mold lines are everywhere. I'm pretty sure she's supposed to have an exposed mouth, but the detail there is so shallow, it just winds up looking like a smooth faceplate, so I painted it like a visor. Another imperfection with this figure is her sword. For the life of me, regardless of how much I tried heating it up, it just won't straighten out.

Despite those issues, I'm fairly pleased with my results. I got this figure along with a pile of other Relic Knights second-hand from Highlord Tamburlaine, who won it all in an auction. She was nearly complete, but was missing the little armor pieces that go on her wings. I had to shave the pegs off and clean them up a bit so they didn't look quite so off.

She's a neat figure though. Very dynamic. She'll go nicely with the pile of Void figures I'm getting from the second Kickstarter.

Also, tonight I finished those other two Cephalyx Drudges.

Yes, they still need basing. So do the other Drudges. I should have them all finished up by the time Brookhurst's next Bring 'n Buy comes around in August. Hopefully I'll be able to pawn them off on someone.

I figure I'll go ahead and post this now, since I'll be on yet another house-sitting adventure for about the next week.

This is my Primaris Reiver test paintjob. Since they're supposed to be commando Marines, I thought it would be appropriate to go with a tacti-cool black scheme for his armor while keeping the full pauldron in the chapter's colors. I tried doing an edge highlight on this one, but I may wind up just doing regular old highlights on the other two. As for the green pauldron, my plan is go make my Primaris Marines Raptors. That way I can still use the green Space Marines and equipment I've already painted. There's no iconogrophy on his pauldron yet because I'll have to freehand it and I'm kind of too lazy to try right now.

I guarantee that I will be working on some more 8th edition stuff. This includes the new Dreadnought.

Realistically, I don't think they would even include their iconography. But, at the tabletop level, it's a good way to tie them into the force without having them merge into the rather homogeneous blob that the rest of the army would be.

I actually got to play some Age of Sigmar Skirmish today. Yeah, I actually played a game! That's a rarity. I played with highlord Tamburlaine, just as an introductory game to get the hang of the rules. I used four Stormcast Liberators and two Retributors against his Khornate stuff. Some Reavers, Blood Knights, and a Wrath Monger. Not bad. It actually seemed pretty easy and played quick. It felt a lot like the 8th Edition 40k rules in First Strike. I even managed to win a "minor victory" against Tamburlaine. A victory of any sort for me is rare, so that was nice. It definitely gets me in the mood to actually paint some more of my Stormcast. They'll have to wait though. Other stuff is in the queue right now.

The Redemptor is now fully assembled, and silver. I've gone ahead and taken a size comparison of it so you get a better feel for how big it is.

This was interesting. The kit is almost a snap together. There's a lot of parts on this that really don't need any glue. Equally interesting, like the Knights, the arms are actually fully articulated after assembly. Movable shoulders, elbows, and wrist. That really wasn't a feature I was expecting. Also interesting, there's these rings on the hips that have the hydraulic pistons attached to them. Those rings are actually not glued on, so if you remove the little nub on the hips that the legs mount onto, you actually get a pretty wide range of options in how you want to pose the legs. Same with the knees, there's a tab that slots the lower legs onto the thighs. If you remove that tab, the knees can be posed as well. So, this kit is designed to allow for a lot of pose options if you just remove a couple tabs here and there. Oh, and the right arm can be freely swapped after aseembly as well. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for the left arm's integrated weapon nor the chest mounted weapons. but hey, options!

I got the Redemptor finished last night. Only one blah phone pic for now. I'll post the full turnaround later tonight. I'm very proud of myself though because I managed a decent freehand of the Raptors insignia on it.

Okay folks, here's the full turnaround. The yellow band on its arm is a little hard to see with the glare, but you can clearly see the Raptors insignia.

I feel like it still needs something on its right shoulder pad. Any suggestions?

I do have Allied Stars on my other green Space Marines and Dreads. Hmm.

I completed three more figures today. First, my Nexus Brawler from Icarus Miniatures.

Cool figure, but that axe is super thin.

Next, someone I will be planning to sell at Brookhurst's next Bring 'n Buy, a Maxmini Plague Demon.

Last, we have the second Retarius from my Avalon set from Alkemy. I know it looks kind of like he has three man-boobs, but that's actually a severed cat-person head in the middle of his chest.

So only two man boobs then? Just checking .

That nexus figure looks good. Maybe the axe is supposed to be super thin to reduce friction.

Your Plague Demon is disgusting looking, which is to say, mission accomplished.

I'd say maybe bring out some more colors on the cat head so it doesn't blend in as much maybe?

Well, I'm pleased to see that people seem to like the camo Reiver. Thankfully, when I get the Intercessors, the method I'll be using for them is basically the same, just no camo. So, they'll actually be easier to paint. Now that I've finished the main project I wanted to get done this week, I'll be able to focus on painting my remaining Primaris Marines.

My project for the week was to paint up another figure to sell at Brookhurst this weekend. I'm hoping I'll have some takers. This guy is the old, metal Skorne Savage Cyclops, from Hordes.

Sadly, his banner pole is snapped in half and doesn't want to go back together, so he'll have to go without. I really like the Skorne Cyclopses. They're neat looking figures.

Another figure I got finished is my (currently) final Dark Mariner, the Annihilator Biomech!

That's it! That's all of my Dark Mariners painted. It only took me two years. Of course, I still have a bunch of other Fortune Hunters to paint as well as some Axibalan amazons. Someday I'll get around to those.

It's probably because I do more painting than gaming that I have such a random collection. I have a habit of just grabbing whatever looks interesting to me. Honestly, I think Highlord Tamburlaine has a more random collection than me.

That's Vallejo Emerald. Funny thing is that I actually used the wrong paint here. I meant to use Vallejo Turquoise, which was what I used on my other Cyclops. It turned out looking good though, so I don't really mind that I used thr wrong color.

Mostly Vallejo. The washes I use are GW's though. The Dark Mariners are actually painted almost entirely using washes.

Aside from the metallics and a few details here and there. Technically, the blues were done with a glaze since GW's blue wash is garbage, but yeah, the main colors were done using washes.

Whipped up another Intercessor tonight. One more of them to go.

Since I currently only have three, I figure it's cool to try and give them a bit of individuality. So, that's why the first one has the kill tally on his helmet. This guy gets bloody hand-prints on his helmet and pauldron. What should I give the Sergeant? I'm tempted to put a smiley face on his armor somewhere.

I seem to recall the Chaos guys in THQ's Space Marine having glowing blue eyes. I thought it was a neat look, so that's why I went with it here. The color scheme I went with is almost exactly the same tgat Warhammer TV showed for doing the Weeping Legion, I just left out the highlights for the darker green trim. I'd thought about making them grimier, but with how detailed the sculpts are these guys, it would probably have just made them too busy. So, that's why I stuck with keeping their plates clean. My old Plague Dogs though were quite filthy.

Oh, something interesting, particularly about this Plague Marine, is that his headsculpt is almost EXACTLY the same as one of Maxmini's Not-Plague Marine heads. The only real difference is that GW added that central breathing tube to it.

Tonight I'll have pics of the completed Intercessor Sergeant and my second Plague Marine.

Here are the completed Primaris Raptor Sergeant and the second Plague Marine.

I couldn't quite figure out how I should go about denoting him as being the Sergeant. Sure, his helmet is off, but I felt like he needed something a little... more. I know Primaris Marine Sergeants are supposed to have red helmets, but that didn't seem quite like something the Raptors would do. Big 'ole target on their CO, right there. So, what I decided to do was take a page from GW's pre-Bling Marine days of Rogue Trader. There's an image that shows officer markings for several chapters and the markings consist of a simple yellow band across the officer's helmet, just above the eyes. I think there's also supposed to be markings on the cuffs as well. So, I went with that. You can kind of see the yellow cuff markings in some of the pics, but here's the helmet.

Simple and unobtrusive.

And here's the second Weeping Legion Plague Marine.

I like how dynamic he is. I doubt we'll be seeing poses like that when the multipose guys come out.

I'll just repost what I put in the Mecha thread in N& R.

Not a bad little kit, but much smaller than I was expecting. It's about a full head shorter than most 1/144 Gundam kits. For a Kotobukiya model, it's surprisingly simplistic. Most of their stuff uses tiny, minute little pieces, but not this kit. The way the hands are designed is interesting as well; the fingers are all one piece that clips into the palm. Much better method of doing the hands than some of their previous kits. I would say that there are two issues with the kit. 1)if you want it to look like the boxart, you absolutely have to paint it. Most of the white bits in the boxart and in the box photos are not present on the kit. Same with the clear blue bits. Thankfully, it still looks good even if you don't paint it. 2) the hips. I wish they used a system like Bandai's been using on their HG kits lately. It really needs a thigh swivel. Instead, its hips are basically using a ball & socket style joint, so it limits the hip mobility somewhat.

Overall though, definitely a good model. Pick one up!

I'd say I had a pretty productive week of painting.

Painted up a pair of Pox Walkers.

And, I finished my team of Red Hats.

Back when I painted the first one (the SMG one), I couldn't decide how I should paint him. Then I watched Colony on Netflix and it totally clicked. Now I need to figure out what game I could actually use them in.

Knife guy's gun wound up looking a bit like a Mac-10 once I glued it to that hand. I like the idea of him having a micro SMG.

Cyborg medic.

Dual wielding las-pistols and NVGs. The guns are from Mantic's GCPS.

Dual grip and kneeling.

And this baby arrived this afternoon. Can't wait to build 'em.

Panzer World Galient has some nostalgic value for me. I didn't see the show until I was an adult, but when I was a kid, I had some models and a toy of one of the centaur mechs. When I was a kid, I was way into knights, so the idea of mecha knights just totally blew my mind back then. I'm so happy that there's new model kits. Too bad Bandai probably won't make kits of the robots I used to have.

Check out that lovely box art though. not as awesome as the original Takara model box artwork, but still very nice.

I couldn't stand not having a "proper" sized team of Reivers, so I bought another 3-man set. Did some arm swaps and borrowed a bare head from the multipose box for a bit of variety. Voila, three new bog standard Reivers!

This now gives me what should be a 90 point squad of standard Reivers.

What fun! Next, I'm going to slowly work on some Plague Marines and some cyborgs.

I've been neglecting my painting duties these last few days. I've been getting home later than usual and I got my Battle Systems sci-fi scenery over the weekend, so I've been playing with that.

I only just started messing with it on Sunday, but I've got a couple of small buildings set up. Some of the new stuff is a bit confusing to assemble without any instructions. They've also cut down on the variety of plastic connectors. The two roof connector types that the apocalypse scenery had don't seem to be present anymore. At least, not in the colony outpost set. Without them, the roofs seem a lot more finicky. Still, there's some pretty cool new stuff, too. Here's a few photos I took after assembling my claustrophobic little buildings.

Hopefully I'll get back to my painting tomorrow.

I do wish they had helmets, too. I suppose I could've painted the guy with the full facemask like he's wearing a helmet, but his ears are sculpted on. The Plague Marines don't quite match up with my Dark Mariners because the base colors are actually a fair bit different. The Dark Mariners use bone white as their base while the Weeping Legion use a leathery tan that comes close to a flesh tone over a grayish green as their base. For some reason they look similar in the photos, but the Dark Mariners have an overall brighter colors scheme.

Yeah, these new ones do look a lot more like the Armored Chasseur artwork from the Kickstarter. They're a lot bulkier, too. I'm hoping the line isn't dead yet. Hopefully the Siege of the Citadel will reinvigorate them. At the very least, it will be giving me plenty of new Warzone figures to paint.

Thanks Bob. Weirdly enough, just about all of these Armored Chasseurs have their faces exposed. It's like, the one fleshy bit they have left with the most important organ, yet it's the least protected part of them. At leas the Mirrormen wear full helmets.

While I've been working on my Cybertronic dudes, I've been painting a few 15mm figures on the side. I finished several of them tonight.

First, a few Maligs from Ion Age.

This next one was a monthly freebie. He's stealing a Skrak egg so the Shia Khan legions can domesticate them. Those would be the Chocobo looking birds with goblin riders I did a little while back.

They're supposed to have a very high mortality rate. The Skraks tend to eat them when they sneak into their nests.

I got another Legionnaire done, too.

I'm not sure what it is about those early Maligs Ion Age did, but I really like them. The later sets they did just aren't quite as cool.

The other thing I finished tonight was a Battle Raven mech from Micropanzer.

This is the Mk.I type, which is armed with a minigun, arm mounted rocket pod, and shoulder mounted micro missile launcher. I know it looks pretty yellow in the photo, but it's actually a bit more of a desert yellow/tan-ish color. I really like this thing and I wish I'd bought more of them. Unfortunately, Micropanzer just announced today that they were looking to sell off all of their ranges, which means these.

The Battle Raven is actually a pretty hefty little model. Solid metal (which made things "fun" during assembly) and it's mounted on a 40mm base. Here's how it compares to Ion Age's Afara Strider and a not-Titanfall pilot (also put out by Micropanzer).

My photo may not show it very well, but yes, that pilot is absolutely based on the pilots from Titanfall. Micropanzer also produces some Not-Titans for them. I have one that I'll work on, eventually.

I haven't painted any Infinity minis in a long while, so it felt good to paint some up again.

Here's the v.2 sculpt of the Haqqislam Ragik hacker. I love these Ragik figures. I've actually got a small squad of Ragiks. Their new sculpts are especially cool.

I also painted a Corregidor Bandit.

The mask doesn't look very good in this pic, I know. The figure reminds me a lot of Taokakka from Blazblue, so I was attempting to paint this figure's mask to look similar. It looks cruddy in this pic, but at tabletop level it looks fine. Her face is so tiny, i couldn't really add any details anyway.

Last, I finally got around to painting one of my Last Saga minis.

I'm not especially pleased with how the face turned out on her. My plan though is to just use her as a generic medic proxy for my Haqqislam forces.

I spent most of my night working on a Plague Marine Champion, but I did manage to get some more 15mm work in.

This guy is a Yandrassi Commander.

He's totally not an Elite. No sir. He certainly isn't the Arbiter, either. Totally not. I know I could just buy actual Elites from Spartan, but these guys actually came out before that Halo game did. Plus, they're still in production! These guys, the Yandrassi are made by Loud Ninja Games and distributed by Alternative Armies. Same guys that do Ion Age. Loud Ninja made other Not-Covenant, too. There's also Not-Grunts and Not-Brutes. They also make jetbikes for them that look vaguely like the STAPs from Star Wars and a series of mecha. I've actually got a full squad of Yandrassi infantry and a mech for them, but I just haven't ever gotten around to painting them. I wanted to do them in metallic purple armor, but I could never quite figure out how best to do that.

Don't you hate it when you put a lot of work into a mini only to realize that you're completely unhappy with your results? I had that happen tonight. I was working on a Last Saga mini and it just wasn't working for me. Had to scrap the whole thing and toss it in the Simple Green. Bah. I wasn't really in the mood to paint up that Plague Marine Champion, either. So, instead I worked on some more 15mm figures.

Now these guys, I received them as a freebie bonus in my last order to Micropanzer. Two full squads. one with just the basic guys, like the one on the left and one with the skirted guys on the right. It turns out that they're some unproduced faction Micropanzer had made. Pretty cool for freebies.

Just finished up tonight, the Baroness Julanne of Canlaster. She's the final freebie figure Ion Age put out and I believe she used to be on the cover of the rulebook, until they resized and updated it. My colors are a bit darker than they should be for Canlaster, but I'm happy enough with it. She looks decent enough on the table.

The Warzone minis look cool and I like those mechs. I also applaud your work with the 15mm stuff. I have tried smaller scales and can't do it. I respect anyone that can and that does it so well.

Post by: Barzam

Well, I can't speak for scales smaller than 15mm, but I've found that it isn't quite as difficult a scale to work with as I thought it would be. I was initially really worried that because the figures are so small, I wouldn't be able to properly paint them. I found though that you can get a surprisingly good tabletop quality paintjob on them very easily by just slopping on some base colors and a thick wash. Give them another shot. Honestly, the most difficult part in working with 15mm I find is doing their bases. It can be such a mess.

Anyway, no 15mm today. This time, it's some good 'ole 28mm figures. These are a trio of Neanderthals from Warlord's Savage Core line. Strangely enough, I can't really seem to find the line listed on Warlord's site anymore.

These guys have been plaguing my table for a while. Despite their very simple paint scheme, they were kind of a paint to paint. Their furs have a lot of uneven surfaces with a lot of random deep cuts and gouges all over them. So, getting paint in all of the cracks and crevices was very difficult. I'm glad they're finally done though. now I can move on to other stuff.

As you can see, I'm also trying out a different backdrop for my photos. I'm using some of the parts from the recent Battle Systems Kickstarter. Specifically from the Frontier terrain set. I think it works pretty good, though not so much with fantasy figures.

I like the Battle Systems terrain. The only issue I've had is that those crates in the shot weren't keyed very well, so they had some fit issues. The apocalypse terrain also had some very helpful clips that helped keep the roofs in place. For some reason, those clips aren't present in this new set. I would have liked to have had them since they helped with the buildings' stability. I'd have liked some instructions for some of the items as well. Once you know how the parts work and interact though, the stuff is pretty easy to work with.

I tried building some beds and they did NOT want to fit together.

Some of the lockers I built weren't cut very well either. Wasn't sure if that was indicative of all the stuff or it was just a misaligned sheet I was dealing with.

Barzam Paints random miniatures- 6/30/2020 Dusk Raider Thunder Warrior Sniper @ 2017/10/13 17:55:25

Some items actually will need some glue. I think the beds were one of those. Some of the screens are a bit tricky, too. I do wish there were instructions. I'm still not sure how the strategy table is supposed to go together. I suspect that the scatter terrain sheet may have been a bit off when it was cut. I noticed some fit issues with a few of the objects as well. The crates wrre the worst, but I do recall having issues with the lockers and the C0-2 scrubber as well. I never had any issues with the apocalypse terrain though and my actual terrain sheets are also pretty much flawless. I think the problem may just be with the scatter sheet.

I got some 15mm goodness done this weekend.

First, we have some Nephilim robots from Micropanzer.

The Nephilim Alpha

He apparently has some kind of hose-fed energy weapon. He's a lot chunkier and bigger than my other Nephilim robots and, along with the other Alpha sculpts, is the biggest figure in this particular range. Not visible due to my lighting sucking, he's got some orbs on his thighs I painted to match his eyes.

Smaller than the Alphas, but bigger than the regular troops, we have the Nephilim Heavy Support Infantry.

I'd decided back when I did the basic troops that I would color code each unity type. So, basic troops are yellow, Heavy Support are white, Alphas are red, and when I get them the snipers will be green and the specialists will be blue.

From Clearhorizon Miniatures, I got a set of their Post-Apocalyptic Wasteland Rangers. The guys were designed with the intention of being used in games of This is Not a Test. They're pretty cool little figures, so I'm looking forward to finishing them. Plus, they came with a dog.

Here's the first one.

Finally, while not technically 15mm minis, we have a pair of GW Rippers.

At 15mm, these things are as big as a regular human. I wish I had some of the other types, because they make great man-sized monsters.

Two new additions for today.

A second Wasteland Ranger. This one appears to be armed with some kind of grenade launcher or something.

Second is a gang member from Rebel Minis. He was included in their All Things Zombie survivor boxed set along with other gang members, civvies, soldiers, and rioters.

Rocket launcher

Leader

And finally, dog.

I finally, finally finished the last two figures from my First Strike box set. It took me months, but I finally completed it. Here's the last Death Guard Marine, the one with the Blight Launcher.

I thought boils and pustules were already pretty well covered in the line, needed something a bit more Chaos-y. I figured eyes would do the job. They're a bit rough looking, but I'm pleased with them.

And here's the last Pox Walker, who I'd been saving until I could get myself some of that Nurgle slime Technical Paint.

So, I took pics of all of the First Strike minis. Can I just say, my camera sucks. Every pic has at least one guy blurry and the damn thing just wouldn't focus. I think it's time I bought a new camera. Ugh.

Here's the Primaris Marines.

The Reivers

The Death Guard

I got a few projects cleared off the table tonight.

First, some Skitarii Fresh Forged, who I totally stole from AAN/Agis. His idea was way too good not to steal.

I whipped up a quick little piece of scatter terrain for my 15mm minis.

And finally, another mech for my 15mm forces. My pictures do it absolutely no justice.

It's a bit hard to tell, but this thing is a modified version of one of Micropanzer's Not-Titanfall mechs. The sculpts were done by Flytrap Factory and originally sold through Zombiesmith, but Micropanzer bought the molds and sold them through his shop before it closed down. Micropanzer must've bought some of Flytrap's other molds though, because the head for this mech was last seen being used on some greens for some 28mm scaled Not-Titanfall pilots. Sadly, those guys never came about. But, the 15mm ones and their mechs did. They're cool kits, but an absolute pain to assemble.

I was good and productive yesterday. I got four figures finished up.

I discovered that I had a couple of Unity Council Marines left from the Afterlife range that I still hadn't painted, so I got one done.

I also finished the final two Unity Guards, also from Afterlife.

And, lastly, the one I really tried to put some effort into. This is Anvil Industries' limited run Commissar model. He was previously available for a limited time when they did their preorder run on the trench fighters, but only if you bought a platoon. After that, he became a convention only figure. I got lucky and grabbed one during their Gencon sale. The figure had options to also have a plasma pistol and a power axe. This particular accessory setup was chosen by Highlord Tamburlaine.

Sort of different for me, but today's update is a Veer-Myn Nightmare with Chem Sprayer.

I've painted him up to match my Weeping Legion Death Guard. I had the epiphany that I could totally use these guys as abhuman cultists for my Death Guard. Most of their weapons match up, too. With just the Deadzone starter, I should be able to field a decent unit of cultists to support my Death Guard in Shadow War, too. On top of that, based on their weapon options, I think I could also run them as Eschers in Necromunda! Fun times ahead. Unfortunately, I currently only have one other Veer-Myn Nightmare, so those plans will need to wait until I can get that starter set.

Did the basic plastic troops have parts to make Progenitors? If so, I'm betting I could use the Progenitors as full-fledged gangers and the regular rats as Juves. Hmm. Let me know if there's anything you would be interested in trading for some rats.

I did get the other Progenitor finished, too. This one is armed with a Spitter Rifle. I'm thinking it could be used as a stubber.

These guys will make some great cultists for my Plague Marines. I'll have to figure out some way to make some armed with shotguns though.

They have some techy parts that could work, but would require some armor bits on the arms and legs. The weapons off the Nightmare sprue might look suitable for the role.

Yeah, but aren't the Nightmares quite a bit bigger than the regular troops? The pics for the basic plastic rats show what looks like a Progenitor carrying some kind of heavy weapon with a gunshield mounted on it. The arms look more armored on that guy.

I whipped up a Plague Trooper today, too. I like how the new plastic versions of them have a carapace. It ties them in with the Stage 2 more. These guys would also make very nice cultists for the Death Guard.

Both figures came from the Phalanx Consortium's Skirmish: Ragers zombie apocalypse survivor Kickstarter. I'll admit, these two were a big part of why I backed that Kickstarter. Who wouldn't want these two in their warband, kicking ass in the name of the Lord?

Oh, yeah, and I painted another Mantic Plague Trooper.

The Plague guy's clothing and skin colors blend together in my eyes. It makes it look like he is fighting pantsless.

Yeah, the clothing blending into the skin was something I was a bit worried about when I painted him. It doesn't look quite so bad in person. Speaking of looking better in person, I painted some more Plague last night and one of them has camo pants, but the colors got so blended together they're hard to make out.

The other guy came out better.

And I painted one of my GCPS Rangers. The head is a bit androgynous, but this is supposed to be a female head.

I should probably go back over her face with some highlights. I noticed that the skin on her face wound up not matching the skin on her hands very well. For some reason, the green pouches and knife sheaths on her also came out looking grey. They're not grey, they're green.

Yeah, my original Deadzone ones were a sort of purplish pink. I wanted some variety among them, so I used the same colors I've been using on my Walking Dead zombies. Interestingly, the plastic Stage 3s have a boney carapace while the restic Stage 3s don't. I suppose the difference in coloration could be explained as being due to the others lacking the carapace.

So a priest and a rabbi walk into the Apocalypse...

I don't have a punchline.

Man, your pics turned out so much better than mine.

I've been fighting with my laptop lately. About two days ago, it started acting weird. Really slow, monitor not receiving any signal, not going into sleep mode properly, and videos not playing properly. I've run virus scans and malware scans, but nothing is coming up. It's really weird. But, it may affect me regarding posting pictures in the near future. I'm planning to replace my laptop with a shiny new PC soon, so that should certainly fix my problems.

So, while I can still post photos, I finished up the last few figures from my plastic Plague spure. Here's the last trooper, who is running while slightly leaning forward, making him very difficult to photograph.

Here's the Plague Hound, which is also on the sprue.

With the troops all built, there's still a few parts leftover on the spure. The mortar, several arms, three special weapons, and several heads. I figured I'd make use of some of those leftover bits and make myself the mortar and a crew for it. Using some of Mantic's sci-fi zombies, I was able to cobble together some especially weirdly proportioned crewmen.

I suppose the nice thing about the Plague being so weirdly proportioned is that I can actually make a conversion like this work.

Got in a game of Shadows of Brimstone today with my cousin, Highlord Tamburlaine, and BobtheInquisitor. I think this was the first time I actually survived a mission.

This was really early into the game.

Here's the first encounter, an ambush by zombies.

The game has a ton of cards.

The running Plague guy and the dog feel very dynamic for multipose plastics. The paint adds a lot of interest to them, too. Love the Doggy's nose and the plague guy's face.

The Mortar crew look so left out. "Hey, I wanna go shoot da guys." "Nah. We're supposed to stay here and draw their fire."

The Brimstone game was fun. Glad we had a chance to play.

Here's a bad phone pic of the newly finished Veer-myn character, Hacker Half-Tail. This is the metal Deadzone KS edition of him. I'll try to get better pics later.

Alright, better pics of Hacker Half-tail today.

I wanted to get a pic of his wrist tablet computer, too. I thought an arm mounted motion tracker would be a cool detail for him.

And back to painting more of my Weeping Legion Plague Marines.

I like this guy's look a lot. The Plague Bearer face on his shoulder is a neat touch. I wonder if these guys that have animated faces and stuff on their armor ever talk them? Like, do you think he ever talks to his shoulder mounted Plague Bearer?

I picked up a Goliath gang on Black Friday. I figured I'd go ahead and at least get one of them painted. I'll have to work on them alongside my Weeping Legion Vectorum. Speaking of, these new Goliaths are huge! This guy is just as big as one of the new Death Guard!

So, I figure a lot of people are going to go with the standard colors. I didn't really want to go with what everyone else is doing. I figured since House Goliath is supposed to be running the foundries and smelters, a good industrial scheme would suit them. So I went with a nice hazard yellow and chevrons. I think it suits him pretty well.

I got another Plague Marine finished up. I got this guy finished back on Wednesday, actually.

I'll be going on vacation to Japan next Wednesday, so I won't have access to my Pile of Shame for a little while. So, my goal right now is to complete five more Plague Marines before I leave. Shouldn't be too hard. I have two more that are nearly finished.

I'm going to be heading out on vacation to Japan in a couple of days to visit my brother. I set a goal for myself to complete four converted Plague Marines before I left. Well, mission accomplished. Not only did I complete all four, but aside from getting him based, I completed a fifth conversion as well. I'll post pics of him when I get back though. Feast your eyes on my rather simple conversions.

I made that guy because I wanted a second special weapon in the squad that wasn't just a blight launcher or a plasma rifle. I wanted a flamer and the Plague Belcher is pretty much that.

This guy, one of the data slates I'd seen- I don't know where it came from, probably the Index- but it listed that a Plague Marine can take a second Plague Knife as an option. I figured this guy could work as either carrying a second Plague Knife or a Plague Sword. Either way, I thought the idea of having a dude dual wielding blades would be neat.

Now, as you can see, all of these guys are pretty simple conversions. Mostly just swaps of arms, heads, and some backpacks. I carved off a few details here and there just to add some variety, but the overall main goal was to create some diversity among my Plague Marines (no doubled poses!) without having to resort to using Green Stuff. The guy who probably took the most work was the swordsman. I was actually planning on breaking my rule and sculpting a gut plate on him, but once I'd carved off the growths from his abdomen, I really liked how it looked and just reshaped that area to look more like an apron. I really wish I'd had a cleaver to give him. In order to get a bit more variety, I did use some extra heads from the multipose guys though.

Excellent job on the poses (and the painting, too). They all look natural and have a sense of movement.

I'm currently on vacation in Japan. I was able to do a little bit of shopping this afternoon and bought a couple of model kits. I got Bandai's Hg Zaku Half-Cannon and the Rose type Governor from Kotobukiya's Hexa Gear line.

Because she's such a small kit, I was able to assemble the Rose figure during some down time.

I think she's actually a bit better than the male types. She holds together a lot better and with the way the hands attach, they stay on much better, too. Weapons are fixed to specific hands though. I'm not sure how I feel about that.

Did you ever open those space marines, or are you waiting til you get home?

Did you get them at Joshin or at one of the other stores downtown?

Oh, I opened them. I even built one. I found them at Yodabashi Camera. I actually found them cheaper at Amiami's brick & mortar shop in Akihabara, but I only grabbed a couple.

Here's the one I assembled. They're all snap together kits and they all have swappable heads.

This guy is Brother Titus. He's posed mid reload. Each figure comes with a unique stat card and bio. Weirdly, the stats are completely different from actual 40k stats.

The bio is totally in Japanese, of course.

My Japanese is rusty, but does that card mean his name is supposed to be pronounced "Teetus"? "Teitus"?

Those models go together really nicely, much better than I figured they would. If only I had any interest in 40K...
