I've been following this thread for a good while and thought I'd contribute with my single most converted miniature, one that I finished only last night.
More pictures of him in my gallery for those who are interested.
The bionic arm and sword are nearly entirely scratchbuilt, legs and one foot have been repositioned and the smoke plume is made from green stuff.
Base is also magnetized so I can swap for a lower one for gaming if necessary.
The pictures aren't great, am hoping for a break in the weather soon to take better ones in natural light.

The sword itself is actually from Guild Wars, it was big there but not this big, the size inspiration came from Final Fantasy. I didn't want it to be the size of a normal power sword, nor just a tiny bit bigger, I wanted it to be big and once you're making a big sword, why not go a bit overboard?

As unclebadtouch stated. The pylons are from Quantum Gothic (cost abotu £18 and it's a 60 piece kit, but pretty simpel to build and paint). The Psyker is the FW model. Thh base is 3 CDs stuck together, the top from a tub of hair product and some bits of 0.5mm plasticard. Dead easy to build.

I used some green stuff do add noses and hair on my regular trolls to make them look more like nordic folklore trolls, and therefore make them viable to be used as Stone Trolls instead (their models are fugly...) I think the "niceness" lies in the simplicity of the conversion.

To be serious, I took this head from the Baneblade kit.
DiDDe, the real T-34 wasn't as big as a Baneblade, it was Leman Russ-sized.
But the Baneblade turret does fit to T-34 chassis.
Baneblade is like the German super-heavy tank Maus (the mouse). Sadly, there were only 5 of them and none participated in WWII.

I just thought that if you just look at the scale of the turret and the chassi. they kinda look pretty same-sized, Since the T-34 I used is a scale 1/34. And I know that the baneblande is nowhere near the size of a T-34 if the baneblade existed irl. ;D
In that case it's more like a maus like you said but the armaments of it has to be more like a Ratte then or something?

Sadly, I don't have the whole army up-he's one a kind right now (but quite easy if you want to make your own). I do have a bunch of Eldar Iron Man models up, but a lot of them were half-assed and I have to go back and take off the Eldary bitz (like cloth) and make it straight up metal. Should be better then, but I don't want them up til they're done. Deadpool, however, is finished. If anyone wants the list of parts to make him, just send me a PM. If enough people really want it, I'll just add it to my first post. Edit: And yes, Mr. Wade Wilson himself is 100% GW material (except portions of green stuff from GF9, but don't tell GW that )

Not everyone has a few hundred bucks to drop on plastic, plus another hundred or so for the rules. Many don't have the talent for a well painted army. On the other hand, cardboard is cheap, and most people nowadays have access to a computer and color printer...
I'm not an elitist. I'd rather play a fun game against a well-executed 'cardboard' army than against a snob who looks down at me because I'm not using all the latest minis...
22349
Post by: portugus
I made it because I was bored. I take no offence to what anybody said. I only had a pocket knife, cardboard and gorilla glue plus the print out. If I had scissors I would have matched it up more.
28327
Post by: mullet_steve
I wouldn't exactly call myself an elitest or a snob, I'm willing to play against unpainted armies in friendly games however I would expect if someone wants to make thier own models because they can't afford GW plastics for everything that a certain amount of effort had gone into creating the stand in models because for me playing the game is sort of an added extra or icing on the cake as I enjoy the collecting building and painting of an army just as much as I enjoy playing with it.
Plus this is the "best converted model" thread so I would expect people to put their best or favorite coversion into it?
I mean no disrespect or offence I am just clarifying why I thought that the post might have been tailored for humour. As portugus has stated he made it because he was bored and given the time again and some better tools could have done a better job already.

Post by: MightyGodzilla
I like to play with this one whenever I can. The hardest thing was to remove and hollow out the left shouldpad - it's from the Chaplain kit, but it was on the right stormbolter side. The banner's from the LOTD set, chaplain body, librarian left arm and staff, storm bolter attached to a storm shield arm covered with the shoulder from the chaplain model. All painted and ready for the field. I use him for both my chaplain or a librarian.

Vulcan wrote:Not everyone has a few hundred bucks to drop on plastic, plus another hundred or so for the rules. Many don't have the talent for a well painted army. The models are expensive. The rules are expensive. Some people can't paint well. The latter seems redundant, just because people can't paint well doesn't mean they can't afford the models, or vice versa. Vulcan wrote:I'm not an elitist. So basically, you're not an elitist but you prefer to be on the side which has the most money, since you don't seem to note the possibility of being able to play a fun game with your own 'cardboard' army because then you'd be playing against a snob who looks down on you. This says more about your potential insecurities than the opinions of other people.

kmopotato nice looking scratch build there, if your paint keeps falling off I would suggest either a better primer or giving the model a rub with the finest wet and dry sandpaper you can find in your local auto tools and meterials shop (halfords in the uk usualy) this will give the primer something to bond to and hold.
now those are exquisit kroot suits very nicely done PossumCraft. And you sculpted some of those comonants out of clay... Very Impressive.

I wanted to do loads, I wanted them manning some big ad mech vehicle, but five was enough in the end.

The coat-of-arms and flag are probably my favorite part of the paint job, as it ties it in well with your army, yet isn't at all too much to take away from the blackness of the chaplain.

Hello all! I started Warhammer 40k up (for the second time) back in May. These guys are for my completely custom chapter called the Legion of Death. I've also written a codex for them, which I have to almost completely re-write.
Anywho, These guys:
The first guy's weapon is one of the nemesis warding staves from either the GK or GKT boxes plus two falchion blades. The guy in back has a DE whip and a custom teleporty backpack. This guy has the head of a Necron Warrior and a SM combat shield made from two DE blades and a bunch of Necron bits.
Now this guy is my favorite of the bunch, because he was the first I actually put a lot of work into. Completely custom hammers, made from four bolters, purity seals, servo-skull halos, and some Dark Eldar doohickeys. I sanded away all of the chaos insignia on the shoulders, but the left leg leaves a little something to be desired.
This guy is my second favorite, because he looks so good. The base, however, does not.
Lastly, this guy. Just.... this guy. Not entirely painted.
I also have a Gundam model I am attempting to turn into a walker. It turns out that Gundam models don't jive well with WH40k stuff. Next purchase: Hot knife.

I like to scratch build my ork battlewagons. Lavishing hours on building my own vehicles. Then one day someome asked me why. " Why, Dakka Dan, oh why don't you just buy battlewagon kits. It'd be so much easier" they asked. I thought quietly for a moment then I beat them to death with their own crown royal dice bag.

I didn't mean to thread-jack this thread, but I'll answer questions.
Zeke 169 wrote:how much GS did you put into that thing?
Almost all of it!
This is how it started out!
I don't know if it still counts as a conversion though...but I did convert it from a paperclip to a commissar...so I guess that should do it!
If you are interested in the build, there is a link to the thread in my signature. And thanks!
WarPetrie wrote: but why not just start the SoB?
I don't like the SoB. And they are all metal, so little or no conversions. 90% of my models are at least moderately converted. (I know it would be easier, but I'm not in this to take the easy road! )
Dakkadan wrote: Then one day someome asked me why. " Why, Dakka Dan, oh why don't you just buy battlewagon kits. It'd be so much easier" they asked. I thought quietly for a moment then I beat them to death with their own crown royal dice bag.
I usually just tell people because I will have vehicles/models that no one else has or will ever have. But I like your response too!
Thank you all for the nice comments!
And now someone else post a conversion!

It is a Tomb King MODEL, but yeah, since its to represent Nagash, its a Vamp character.
That being said, to be able to use him as the fluff dictates, he would be equivalent to at least a small army, around 1000-1500 points... (but then again, thats fluff vs RaW for you...)
regarding the swamp, that is simply polyfilla spread over the base then left to cure/crack. gives a nice effect when glossed up!

Yep... there's rampant speculation amongst the grots that the light just pics up stray static electricity charges from the air and directs it into Cybergit's brain pan... this uncommon and unlooked for introduction of electrical energy is what gives him his ideas... where normally his neurons lay dormant in a quiescent state. I suppose I should call it his "head-light". A bit of good news... I was able to pick up a new camera battery charger over lunch, so I should have pics of my mini-masterpiece late this evening. p.s. As a DA Player that is without a doubt the sexiest land raider i have ever seen.

I will totally be stealing the idea of using the Baal turret if I build a new LRC. I won't be stealing the skullz, but they work quite well on a Dark Angels vehicle. Definitely a very nice "Ossuary-Cathedral" look to it.

Well, I guess I would have to say this:
Because it looks so much like a real toilet!
Or maybe this:
Though that might be the paint job.
Not my absolute best, but that would take a long time to decide (as in, I would have to start over because the candidates doubled kind of long time).

I used near 300 skullz in the LRC, I also thinked shall I add more skullz on top hatch and turret ?
But I used out all the skullz and tired with 7 months work(with 4 months laze in fact), so I decided to finished it wit now status.

Sometimes I think that some of the neatest little conversions are not on particularly spectacular figures... take a look at some of dakka's best builders (as opposed to painters) and you can see a myriad of subtle little changes and modifications to regular old figures that will just become one of many. These folks have certainly inspired me to improve my modeling and look at the build of each figure as a chance to do something new. To make that figure one-of-a-kind.
To wit, I present one beakie sternguard (well, two actually, but it's the unprimed guy I'm going to focus on). To get a beakie into this pose, every single limb has to be deconstructed to some degree, then re-assembled (some Green Stuffed, some not). The effect however, is a marine raising his gun to fire in a more natural fashion that could be done with the stock models, even though it uses the stock parts. In any case, imperfect as my execution may be, I think it represents a much more interesting and believable pose for a marine, especially a sternguard. (Oh, ignore that sloppy GS work, that got cleaned up before priming.)

While I agree that the land raider is awesome, can you guys NOT quote the entirety of his post which includes several large pictures just to reply with 1-4 words? Please take the time to edit the post down to a single pic as some of us browse dakka with bandwith caps on mobile devices...

It's not like you're loading new pictures every time someone quotes the post. It's the same image stored in your cache, displayed again.

Yup, it's annoying, especially on a portable device, to scroll past several large pictures for the 4th time just to read "wow, bro!" at the end. As for the cache issue, that's dependant on your browser and device and how often you check the site; mine reloads every time I load the browser. Either way, it's a simple courtesy that can easily be extended to fellow members so I don't see what the objection is...

Deff Dread with a custom base, and a space marine getting nicely chewed up.

Undercoated and basecoated will be painting in the next few months.

Some of you may have seen it in my blog, and since pretty much everything I do is a conversion, it's was hard to choose, but I think my Khorne Slaughterfiend Defiler is the most characterful of the stuff I've done:
It's in the IA books, and it is pretty much a Defiler, ridden by a champion of Khorne, with the ability to carry a squad of berzerkers.

At the moment, these models at my best ones IMO: Eliphas & Araghast from Dawn of War II: Chaos Rising. Araghast (this one is the only one, who got some minor conversions like the face on his trophy racks and his helmet is a converted helmet from MaxMini): Eliphas: Eliphas & Araghast next to each other.

This is a great mini!! The only thing I can say about it, is there is so much detail all over...the backpack seems kind of bland. You should add something to it. Obviously, you have the skills! Show it again when you paint it!
So many great convertions here! I can't belive I haven't been back here in a while!

The're from the Black Legion (if you've tried Dawn of War: Dark Crusade, you know that Eliphas originally was a Dark Apostle of the Word Bearers, but in Dawn of War II: Chaos Rising, he has been resurrected as Black Legion Aspiring Champion).
