Although i've posted my Dreadnaught before i have some more:
My Chaplain (Finecast without bubbles!)
My Epistolary, not a big conversion but since i used him i've NEVER failed a psy test!
Well the last game i failed it somehow but i got a on the perils of the warp table, thus i'll call this a 2nd degree success
and at last a Scout sergeant with a power Macuahuitl (my Crimson fists have a slight Aztec theme)
he has a ork teeth necklace too
WOW... I am just lost for words. This thread is just pure full throttled awesome... Took me 3 days to look through ALL of it and it has not been time wasted. Someone needs to make this a sticky!!
Just spent £30 on modeling tools, green stuff and bitz.. Thanks guys lol I have 3 projects in mind already... I hope to be able to contribute soon!
Got a couple questions, please drop me a pm if you can help out as I don't want to clutter this thread:
Spoiler:
1. The white plastic stuff on some of the models was that 3d printed or sculpted ? 2. Good greenstuff/sculpting tutorials? 3. How was the smoke effect done on those deff koptas ?
Spoiler:
Gundor2 wrote: Orks are just so much fun to convert. Here's some recent Defkoptas that I did for a painting competition.
The white plastic stuff isn't sculpted or printed. It's PolyStyrene (basically styrofoam without the foam) plastic, usually either in sheet or rod or tube form. It can be cut and bent and otherwise molded around for modeling, and is super cheap.
Argive wrote: 1. The white plastic stuff on some of the models was that 3d printed or sculpted ? 2. Good greenstuff/sculpting tutorials? 3. How was the smoke effect done on those deff koptas ?
1. Plasticard, as Anvildude said. You local hobby store should have some (or you can source it on the net) 2. There are heaps, go to youtube and search, you'll find plenty. 2a. If I had one piece of advice - use a THIN amount of vaseline on your tools... spit doesn't quite do it 2b. Start small. As primarily a space wolf player, I started by doing little wolf pelts draped over shoulders, or hanging off belts.... hair/beards, etc.... 2c. Filling gaps is also a good way to get a feel for how to handle green stuff 3. I'm not sure about those defkoptas, but billowing smoke is often done with cotton or steel wool
I'm not sure where you're up to in your modelling skills, but most people start by doing weapon swaps Then I'd say a bit of posing.... can't find an arm holding a weapon in just the right place for the stance you want? cut up 2-3 arms and join them together
I think the most important (but subtle) step for me though, was learning to use a pin vice. Really adds some strength to your conversions, and can also be used for keeping things straight My finecast Arjac Rockfist model had a badly bent Thunder Hammer that simply refused to be straightened up. So I cut the hammer off at the hand (cutting very carefully WITH the weave of the handle wrapping), drilled right up the shaft and down into his hand with a 1mm drill bit, inserted some 1mm brass rod and then joined it back up. Now it's nice and straight - doesn't droop in the heat, and (rather amazingly) you can't even see the join I've also used the same technique for converting company/regiment banners (these will never stay together with glue alone)
I've posted once before on this thread, but I completed 2 Khorne Lord projects and I just felt they needed to be shared. (Sorry for crappy photo quality) BLOOD FOR THE BLOOD GOD
Peter Wiggin wrote: This guy has been a fun attempt at using some old "failed projects" to create something interesting.
I kinda like him! He looks pretty nurgly, but I can even see him as a noise marine.
Haha, thanks man! Most of my conversions could easily pass for Nurgle, but I don't go in for the bloated fatboy look.
I wanted a model that retained a Spess Muhreen silhoutte but looked twisted & corrupt. Sort of like the Peter Jackson visual take on Orcs in the LOTR movies...IE elves twisted by Morgoth's dark magic. Anyway, the head got damaged pretty bad so I tried to rough out the helmet with plasticard & GS. Close up shot shows how crappy the work really is, but at a distance of a foot back it looks fine. I think it works nicely because the model is sort of hunched forward like there's a big weight on its back anyway.
Does an entire army count as a conversion? There isnt a single standard infantry model in this lot, and the tanks are due an overhaul. Beastman, skaven, marauders, they're all here.
Sorry for the poor images, its night time here.
Wolf Priest. I didn't feel like paying $16 for a single finecast model. So I shaved down a terminator cape, filled in with some green stuff, and made a crozius out of the handle of a frost axe and the backs of two thunder hammers.
The hard part is, what makes a conversion 'best'? The most outlandish over the top, or the one that could be mistaken for a miniature from the line? The best executed or the most imaginative? It is a hard decision to make. I can say my current favorite is my Sister Technicus. A mini that I can only use as a counts as cannoness.
I have been running a jump pack Autarch for a while now and so I thought I should have something a little more WYSIWYG. He's pretty much a mishmash of a whole bunch of the Eldar Aspect Exarchs: torso and head from the Shining Spear Exarch, with added DA helmet crest; arm from Fire Dragon Exarch, arm from DA Exarch with Striking Scorpion Chainsword; legs from Howling Banshee; warp jump pack is scratchbuilt; standing on the hand from an old Wraithlord.
One of my favorites is this Bretonnian Paladin of Empathy made from a Witch Hunters Crusader with some Knight of the realm bits and an Empire Greatsword:
Also this mini I made for a Dnd character is pretty righteous, not sure what to do with him now though. He's made out of some Space Marine bits, Empire Bits, Dark elf legs, and a vampire counts skeleton head:
Sorry for the crappy photo.
This is my converted Syntherion for Convergence of Cyriss. I used a Steel Soul Protector's torso and skirts and made my own female Forge Master.
For your Juggerlord, I'd see if you could get his back foot to bend a little, so that it's gripping the back of the juggernaut better- right now, it looks like he's gonna slip off.
Anvildude wrote: For your Juggerlord, I'd see if you could get his back foot to bend a little, so that it's gripping the back of the juggernaut better- right now, it looks like he's gonna slip off.

Not a bad idea. I think I'll try it.
Id suggest get a cheap $2 neclace and make a choker for the jugger then leash it to the lords hand. i think it will help look like he has some control of a rampaging beast and it will add to the stability look
@ KAPcom: That walker is indeed amazing, mate! Fantastic conversion!
I am rather happy with these two right now:
On the left, Praetor Janus Auriga of the Golden Legion, on the right, Sister Euphrati Eisen of the Order of the Martyred Sword. Kitbashes, both of them. More pictures can be found in my INQ28 thread, in case anyone's interested.
Here is my only real conversion (mainly a kitbash): a Dark Angels Librarian on Bike. I am not that great a painter yet (and I'm an even worse photographer lol) so please don't judge me too harshly...
I am going to fix that freehand symbol on the right shoulder pad so it looks more like a skull with horns than a dog with floppy ears!
My favorite conversions would be the first Archive Hobgoblins I turned into Pikemen and Cavalry for a Hyborian Game.
They were by far from my best, and they remain missing in action.
Currently, all I have are some Epic 40K conversions, where I made from Star Wars styled Speeder Bikes for my IG and SMs.
There are photos in the Yahoo 6mm Sci-Fi miniatures group.
And I am currently working on conversions for LOTR miniatures, to give the Easterling cataphracts halberds, which would make them VERY similar to the Khitan Liao Super-Heavy Cavalry, who carried just about every kind of weapon under the sun; and to make Barded Horses for the Rohirrim Royal Guard. I think I have done a few other minor things, like putting the Númenórean Shields on the Knights of Minas Tirith.
And my most ambitious conversions are re-creating some Balrog conversions that I did of the Ral Partha and Citadel Balrogs from the 1980's. I am thinking of doing something similar to the GW movie Balrog, to give him Armor like he is depicted wearing in the John Howë concept art.

Been looking at the pics in this thread, and they are amazing.
Better than I could've done.
My conversion work on my models makes it look like nothing compared to the models I've seen here in this thread.
Good job everyone.
I just realized that I started up this subject seven years ago. (Yes, I know that I'm off by a few days.) I just wanted to thank everyone for posting and looking at the amazing things we can do with just a little imagination and some spare parts. Also that amazing putty we call Green Stuff.
I hope to see another seven wonderful years of amazing talent.
So after KaptinBadrukks slightly tongue in cheek (I hope) thread got locked I just had to show this.
Its not my model but I never see its awesomeness discussed or reposted anywhere and I just want to share it. In my mind it is without a doubt the coolest conversion ever although strictly more of a scratch build.
So far my Largest creation.
Built from multiple kits with 3 different hulls (Walker bulldog tank, Baneblade, and Temriantor 2 Hunter Killer tank hull.)
Here's my current best.
Blows all my previous entries outta the water imo
It's been sitting in a state of WIP for a while but I think I might get back into it soon and finish off a few half-baked projects I have kickin' around on my desk.
Here are some of my favorites
Awesome black guy (not to be racist, but its true, he is an awesome black guy)
super detailed rhino
Custom captain/chapter master as well as my D+D figure
I've been thinking for a while about coming up with something to emulate the Forgeworld Falcon Type II with it's more streamlined tail section. The Fire Prism turret already has that feel, but the chassis just sort of stops. Here is my attempt:
Process:
Spoiler:
And here it is with some paint:
Now that I can squad Falcons, I really want them all to match. I haven't started on converting the Fire Prisms, as I wanted to see it on the Falcon and make sure I was happy with it. I think I like it enough to start on the rest of the force.
Thanks, here's another one I'd finally gotten around to painting. Explorator Mechanicus guy, first of 5. Prolly end up using them as HQs for the eventual Mechanicus book.
It's a few years old, but I'm still fairly pleased with this Nurgle Dreadnought I made out of the Venerable Dread kit and some defiler parts. Oh, and a lot of greenstuff.
But more recently, I'm pleased with this Dark Apostle that I made out of the plastic Chaos Lord kit, plus some other bits and pieces.
My inquisitor sqd . Too many parts to list . True scale marine and admech servo skull fixer . A pit fighter . A beefed up evasor assassin and my inquisitor in t.d.a
Wow, there were a lot of PAGES of posts for this one, but seeing as this is a site dedicated to making 40k models, I shouldn't be surprised, right?
Well, I haven't done too many of these, as I mismanage time and intent very well; I'm still working on my Rogue Trader custom, and am sort of doubting if he'll ever get done; maybe next time I go on vacation
As for ones I HAVE done, Governor-Militant Markus Krueger is the best one I have, whether he's "good" by actual artist's standards, or not.
So, Markus Krueger here is my homage to Lukas Alexander, from Dawn of War: Dark Crusade. He's a kind of HQ I wish the Guard could have, but assaulty anything isn't really their style. A Commissar, a Senior Officer they don't make, right now, and some other bits all had to give their lives, that this piece could be born, but I'm still very pleased with how it turned out. His stat block is one part "probably broken", mixed with one part "and still not something anyone would use", but still one I'm very proud of. Sorry it's a bit big, but the new camera did well; I just don't know how to adjust size on the screen, here.
The M.U.L.E. needed to be made!
Parts include; imperial knight body bottom and rear panels, interior seating from a stormraven, main chassis and hips from a sentinel and legs+base from an onager.
a pair of imperial guardsmen, one with an AK-47, and the other with a Carl Gustav R.R.
A stormtalon as a walker.
United States Army Space Marine with tacticool bolter...
...with hollowed out helmet.
And some angry marines with improvised weaponry.
SirDonlad wrote: I think this is my best conversion, although i'm having problems distinguishing between 'conversion', 'kitbash' and 'customisation'.
Great job, love it. Would you be able to upload a larger image of it? Reason I ask I have a thread dedicated to conversion ideas and I'd like to feature your model there...assuming that's ok with you of course!
No problem at all! The photo will be the same size as the ones i've been taking recently (4320x3240) but a lot closer to the model - any angle you want in particular?
SirDonlad wrote: No problem at all! The photo will be the same size as the ones i've been taking recently (4320x3240) but a lot closer to the model - any angle you want in particular?
Closer shots would be perfect. From whatever angles you like best! Thanks SirDonlad
Looks good! I'm particularly impressed with the defenition you got on his grip on the spear; so crisp and clearly defined - professional work if ever i saw it.
was looking through my galleries and found this guy from a while back.
He used to be an eldar shadowseer, now Archmagos Malagra!
Im pretty proud of this conversion. Not complete yet but it gives you an idea of what look im going for. Im trying to get a nice set of wings to make this bad boy a flying daemon prince of Khorne
LeCacty wrote: Those are actually very nice! I was expecting THING YOUR PAINTS for first minis!
Thanks they are messy up close but the little bits of colour draw your eyes away neatness comes with practice. Got Darkstrider and a devilfish to do this weekend
Are piranahs still a thing? Get one of those. Back in 09 I started a tau army (and quit) but I remember that being a joy to paint. I need to find that thing and strip it now..
LeCacty wrote: Are piranahs still a thing? Get one of those. Back in 09 I started a tau army (and quit) but I remember that being a joy to paint. I need to find that thing and strip it now..
Yes they are, they are also on my list of things to get
Just registered to get some comments on this one. It's not a conversion I guess, nor a kitbash.. if anything it'd be a bitbash? I just use the bits of friends who play to make weird things and this is my first attempt at a walkerish thingie (WIP). Enjoy! I hope
The Contagion are a new Space faring Xenos race, hell bent on destroying all life in the galaxy by consuming their ships, part by part.
Designed to be used in multiple game systems like Firestorm Armada and Battlefleet gothic.
If anyone wants some, link is Here

It's not too bad actually. The tree is all pretty light wood and the wings are plastic so the only real weight is in the metal dragon which is mostly pretty skinny and long as dragons go so it's not so heavy. The head is about the biggest metal part and it's good and low anyway. The tree is wired to the back corner of the base and I think all the weight pushes diagonally across the square so it works out well.
The hardest part is keeping it away from my kids as it's too big to store easily.
More pics available on my wood elves gallery if anyone is interested.
Automatically Appended Next Post: or maybe these guys. Had lots of fun with these, my scratchbuilt Killa Kans.
Just finished building Sub-Commander Torchstar for my Tau playing friend. Not much of a "conversion" per se but I cannot remember the last time I was this happy with a build I'd done
Posted this in a couple of other places, but I'll toss it on here too. My kit-bashed librarian with a few minor conversions. Namely, the head of the saff, which I'm quite happy with.
I much prefer converting up some characters out of bits versus using a stock figure. Another example being my Captain:
It would probably look like a CRASSUS ARMOURED ASSAULT TRANSPORT filled with Orkmarines- see, you can't loot a CRASSUS ARMOURED ASSAULT TRANSPORT when the CRASSUS ARMOURED ASSAULT TRANSPORT loots you first.
Did this guy last week. I bought a Marineer, which I really wanted. But I needed a Rover more. I was stumped on which to build when my wife said, "just magnetize them."
It's been years since I've posted here, good grief!
So, a number of years ago, when I first started playing Orks, and I came across Irondog's Potato Head Stompa http://www.irondogstudios.com/images/tater/mek_tater.html , my friends and I were in awe of his work (and laughing ourselves into a stupor!). I jokingly said "I should make one of my own!" And my friends challenged me to do just that. Well, I ended up finding about 7 potato head toys at a thrift shop for $10, so I realized early on that I could make a whole bunch of these. With that in mind, for my first attempt, I opted to save originality for the next models, and decided to just reproduce Irondog's stompa as close as I could, because well, I love it, and I wanted *that* Tater Titan! So, up front, I get ZERO points for originality here, as my goal was to reproduce his model. I based it off his hobby blog and images, but as those weren't really the same thing as an instruction manual, this project took a lot of trial and error. Plus, like him, I only worked on this in my free time. It's been about 7 months now, and I've finally got this Super Heavy Spud to the point where he's ready to be shown!

Well got a whole bunch of snapfit marines and will be diing convertions on all of them. These are the ones i have...and this is my salamander tac sarge and my black dragon tac marine hea still needs a dragon style backpack and some paint.
Leman Russ tank + PzKpfw V Panter in Exterminator version covered in mud and snow. Turret is remotelly controlled and sponsons are wired to a servitor.
I think I've posted in this thread several times over the past 3 years, crazy how old it is. Here's a Mechanicus guy I did for a squad of specialized void combat Skitarii, with a beefier mace than the scrawny thing on the sprue.

I REALLY like this. The head makes it look so creepy, which is perfect! What are you going to paint it with?

I just put the finishing touches on this one:
It's a Dark Angels Interrogator-Chaplain on a bike. I used parts from several different kits to put this guy together, and I'll be painting him next month for the monthly painting challenge.
Nothing hugely in depth but pretty pleased with my DE Archon. It borrows from the conversion in the codex, I think it looks much better than the stock model.

The head is going to be gloss black with a mechanicum symbol across it, like the one on the middle guy here. Also I hate myself and they're all getting white color schemes.
First of all, this is an amazing show of conversions!! I love it! This is my favorite aspect, as I am only a so-so painter. Thanks all for sharing. I know I'm late on this band wagon...but hey I just joined.
I'm cheating and putting more than one because I can't choose...sorry.
First my St' Celestine conversion
Next my rough rider sgt. Whole unit is converted this way.
Finally Firesap, my young and wayward Dryad Heroine
Please forgive me for more than one. My gaming group is here and there isn't a consensus...Anyway, more at Edwardmystcreations.weebly.com
I'd have to go with my newly build Chaos Lord and some converted DV bikers. Still need to paint them tho. They're all part of a Khorne Deamonkin army that I am starting up, check it out here for more pictures and models
The bikers all have chopped up head trophies on the back as well.
One of three sorcerers for my cabal. Not sure I like how his left hand turned out, its a bit of a mess but quite happy with the rest. First time I have done a lot of sculpting of large areas (for me!).
This is not my best, because it's my first conversion attempt so far. It's a WIP and the camera is bad.
This is a Honor Guard made from bits that left from the kits I have. The clock is made from paper and I am about to change the base with a 32 resin one and add a sanguinius wing.
I am doing this because, the only Honor Guard I can buy is the Ultramarine box and I do not roll ultramarines.
Nurgle Daemon Prince I did a while back. Haven't got around to painting as I don't know what colours to go for as well as having him securely mounted to the base.
ComradeQuiche wrote: Did this last year, but figured I should still post! 3D modeled the custom parts, 3D printed, assembled and painted/ converted the rest.
Wow, I really need to learn how to do parts in the computer!
I guess my best so far is my Riptide conversion, but I won't paste here as I am doing a WIP thread.
ComradeQuiche wrote: Did this last year, but figured I should still post! 3D modeled the custom parts, 3D printed, assembled and painted/ converted the rest.
Here are some of my best conversions:
the Scout Vet. Sergeant of my fifth Crimson Fist's Scout Squad:
He and his Squad are specialized in Ork hunting (therefore the teeth), armed with a macuahuitl styled Power Maul
Brother Wrath, the last Dreadnought of the Invaders Chapter:
I built him a "bore fist" instead of that ugly chain fist. Also he's equipped with two heavy flamethrowers.
I have done a lot of kit bashes and conversions but my favorites are still my first 2.
My take on a Tyranid Exocrine.
Here ( http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/639224.page ) is the original thread with the unpainted images. The paint job is currently being changed to a new color scheme. I have gotten a lot better at painting since then. I will post the new one when I get it done.
And my Tyranid Prime
As a side honorable mention, my Malanthrope. It's not so much a new take on a model as it is making a malanthrope from plastic parts. Only reason I don't see it as being as good of a conversion as the others.
Seven years since I posted any thing.... and look what is on offer from each and every one who has posted.
The work here is inspirational in making the rest of us go that little bit more
Excellent stuff on the last few pages again, I love everything about:
- Srba's fire wizard
- Inso's Squat Tyranid Hunter Veterans
- Bookwrack's Ninja Ogre Maneater
- Lindsay40K's Word Bearers Helbrute
This is my old one eye. And for when I get to try out the gene stealer cult a sentinel, in opponent doesn't mind. With the story that the cult found old one eye frozen in a glacier and thawed him out and added some modifications.
Getting back into 40k after a long break. Decided I wanted to make some crimson fists that look like maybe they've gone off the deep end with the whole "hating orks" thing.
Here's Bob, the heavy weapons guy in Tac squad #1.
He collects hands.
Don't make it weird.
Edit: Not sure why the pics are embedded upside down, but if you click on them they render upright!
Did a small conversion today. Pretty proud of how he turned out.
As I was not pleased with my old Spacemarine Captain, I did a new one with some spare upgrades I had floating around in my Bitzbox ^^
Its just some Kitbashing, but I think its simple and effective
Thanks, I've been wanting to do this conversion ever since the Phoenix model came out, but had to wait till I got a good deal on both the Heldrake and Phoenix to make it worth it.
The conversion I'm most pleased with is my Inquisitor I made out of the Genestealer Cult Primus. This is probably because it's so far removed from the original miniature and that it's the first conversion I ordered specific components for.
I guess I will have to post this, as it took me the longest to convert! (though its old now!) Added a ton of of wolfy stuff, and 3D modeled most of the other parts. Really tried to think about how a wolfy knight would look if GW ever actually designed one, and I went from there!
https://www.games-workshop.com/en-GB/magnus-the-red Moved the orb. remodeling the head, back of head and hair is green stuff. Wanted the hair to be like thors, ended up more like he-man.
Still working on that.
As somebody that REALLY dislikes the Centurions, that conversion actually looks REALLY good. Fixed the look of the models quite a lot and it looks like all he did was lengthen the shins, separate them to make them look like an actual articulated leg and remove the crotchplate for a terminator crotch. Looks far more dynamic now, almost has a mini Dreadknight vibe. If I ever need to do Centurions, that's how I'll do them.
Yeah I'm of the opinion that the 'Marines in sumo suits' are some of the least attractive models around, but this actually looks decent!
I am, however, sketching out how the Marine must look to fit inside that armour and he's got some reeeally weird proportions. Must be an Iron Hand and everything but his head and torso is cybernetic...
Ynneadwraith wrote: I am, however, sketching out how the Marine must look to fit inside that armour and he's got some reeeally weird proportions. Must be an Iron Hand and everything but his head and torso is cybernetic...
I remember reading somewhere that centurions have their arms folded in front of their chest inside the suit and the actual arms of the suit are robotic.
Man, returning to this thread is always sooo worth it!
@ Kern: That looted Knight is incredible, mate! Thumbs up!
After a longer stint on the sidelines, I have another favourite conversion to share with you: A plastic conversion of the Primarch Angron inspired by this classic piece of artwork by the late, great Wayne England:
And here's the model:
Many more pictures can be found here, in case anyone's interested.
Wow. I feel almost ashamed posting my stuff here. The amount of skills in all those conversions is breathtaking.
well here are my black templar terminators with thunderflails and my neophytes.
-Don't like modern Rhinos.
-Old Rhinos are hard to find, and quite small.
-Don't like modern Predators.
-Old Predators are hard to find, and quite small.
-Want older/HH appearance of Rhinos/Predators.
Magnetized (same vehicle in both shots). More on the way.
@Dr. H- that's actually a really well done Boy. They're all too often given no love, just banged out to fill ranks. But that guy's got character. You doing a whole army like that?
