I LOVE armorcast dood! I just don't love their prices. I have a big box full of their industrial pipe wall sections, and almost all my scatter terrain is armorcast, but I bought a store's entire stock on the cheap (It had all been on their shelf for years.)

Oooh ooh ooh - The sofa was mine! I've been trying to make a dumpster as well.

If you're still looking for ideas, something that I've been playing around with is a raised railtrack system. I feel like mass transit would exist on all levels of a hive (even if it is decrepit and abandoned, it must have had transport links at one point!) and with a bit of track stolen from model train kits it would serve as a nice centrepiece. Plus it could work over multiple levels, and would give you the chance to model a wrecked transport if you wanted! Just an idea, feel free to knock away if you don't like the sound of it

well... i hope it helps... it is quite an ambitious project... note that the scale is mostly 1:47... how long should the car be anyway? some measurements you want on the table would be nice too... actually i only used ford and buick as a name tag... so the caddy tag i havent even explored yet...

Quick question for you pro terrainers that frequent this cornocopia of inspiration and amazing conversation! when building terrain ourselves and it needs to be primed, does it matter if it's primed with a matt black spray or does it need to specifically be a primer? I've found some matt black at a local auto shop and as i need a bit of it I wanted to check with the ones in the know before i wasted my money! money that could be spent buying Nuka Cola!

The Necromunda Project: Fallout @ 2012/03/14 13:50:45

Post by: dsteingass

Primer just gives your detail paint layers something to stick to. It depends on what the terrain is built out of, for most metals and plastics, any cheap $1 can of spray will do fine. You need proper primer only when the material won't take paint (or it will be prone to rusting), then you need to chemically bond or etch to something (like soft plastic- paint will stick, but when you flex it it just peels off) to allow the upper layers of paint something to stick to. Krylon makes a spray specifically for plastics that actually etches into the surface chemically and allows the bending without peeling.

For styrofoam, the propellant in the rattle can tank melts it, so you need to seal it first (the pva method sucks, not recommended), or use water-based spray paint, or just brush (or airbrush) any acrylic paint. This seals it.

Color of primer is only personal preference, I use flat black on terrain to help me cheat with shadow-painting later on, however with miniatures, or any terrain that will be painted a lighter, brighter color (like the nuka Cola machine), I use white. I also use white on miniatures, followed by a thin wash only so my dysfunctional eyes can see all the details.

Gesso is very good for foam too as you can put any texture you may want into the gesso itself brfore you brush it on.

The Necromunda Project: Fallout @ 2012/03/14 14:01:41

Post by: dsteingass

Yep! Also, if you want a concrete texture, it's super easy just by mixing some fine sand into the paint (or Gesso)

Automatically Appended Next Post:
@Vik- I waded through them, I think i'll stick with the cheap plastics for conversions, but at 8 Euros, I still think it would be cheaper to buy them from the US ebay, I also found some Mexican Marx knock-offs too. I will think on this some more, but thanks for all your work man, really appreciate it!

Thanks guys, I'll seal the styro if I use it and just blast away with some cheap spray when i get going, but I'll no doubt update my own blog when i start to record my mistakes and tribulations! :-) I just didn't want to pour time and effort into some terrain and then have it go to rubbish with the wrong stuff! this whole thread has been a massive help to me to make sure i'm not floundering looking for how to approach things to do with terrain, it's pretty darn inspiring and the way you do it all is great for someone like me to follow, i'm pretty crafty and plan things out to the nth degree before i start, so i've still got time up my sleeve to keep watching what you do before i begin!

thanks again!

Automatically Appended Next Post:
@nerdfest- the best thing about priming/sealing white foam with say cheap black acrylic craft paint is that you can easily see where you missed a spot- better to seal it by hand than let the spray paint melt the foam there. Oh, and don't bother trying to melt the foam with the spray can as an effect, it only looks like melted foam in the end. The same way that toilet paper tubes always look like toilet paper tubes unless you cover them with paper or plastic.

Sure! As long as you have a regulator and a moisture trap. Don't just buy whatever AB you find (or you'll be discouraged). You first need to know whether you want a general purpose brush or a detail brush.
I have a Badger 150 for general purpose and a Badger Renegade Krome for detail. I use a 1.5HP/3 gallon tank -regular shop compressor. I added a second, digital regulator ($14 from Harbor Freight) to accurately dial the pressure down to 15-25 pSI)

as for your car ideas... have you considered working with other materials to make your master copy for the cars? like wood? it would shape up to curves far easier than plastic and you have more control over the sanding... and since you work or better can work with preworked shaped wooden
rods you could really make that work quite good...no bending involved...

It's a very well made fantasy series, the only thing that turned me off a little (being only able to watch one episode per week) was the negative, almost desperate vibe and all the intrigues and scheming. I'm certain that's less of a factor if you watch them in one go though. Nevertheless it's part of the design, the books seem to be the same. It's a cruel cruel world. Oh, no spoilers, but don't get to attached to the main characters, they drop like flies.

We are not all the way through the season yet, but the plot is thicker than gravy at this point. Have you ever wanted to see molten gold poured onto a Malfoy-type character's head? The last episode we watched had that!

The eight year old lord still on the teat disturbed me very much.

Ah, but there have been historic cases of such things. How do you think madness, inbreeding, cruelty and political machinations rife in history were so ? Royals/Nobles are all mad as hatters! Watched the whole season and am finishing the first book, this new season coming on April is basically the second book. Same sort of events from new character's POV. More of the multi-sided events going on.

Afterall, how else do Dark Mages take over a land? first they send waves of mind dulling insanity and stupidity out to the enemy, Wake up your long slumbering troops and prepare to march....I have not read the full series, and only going on the 10 episodes and I have extrapolated the patterns as to that is where it is headed.

After all, for once Winter IS coming.

Oh yes, any rational and somewhat sane man or woman would and should be disturbed by these antics. But sadly, knowing my history, I am actually not surprised.

Thats awesome Baiyuan!

And for all you game of thrones people, new series starts on April 1st in the USA (and hence everywhere for the moderately tech-savvy):

Spoiler:

If youve never watched it , do so. If youve never read the books, do so. Just finished the 5th book and its quite simply the best series ive ever read. The political intrigue and sheer scope of the whole thing is mind blowing.

Dave apocalyptic zombie war with Lego AMAZING !!!!

I have to say I was disappointed to hear that you had not created the painter I was amazed at the detail

However intrigued by you're collecting habits and your range of toys

Game of thrones is amazing I loved the first series just waiting for the second to start next month YAY!!!!!

The dog (wolf hound) killing and the incest is a bit on the dark side but hell these things did happen ( still do in some small towns and villages ) but the story is captivating and each episode left you wanting more( more than can be said of most shows )

I would stick with it, Peter Dinklage is by far the best character in this program and delivers great lines every episode, I just hope he does not get killed off

Thanks for the trailer it looks EPIC!!!!!! CANT WAIT

The amount of detail in these kits is surprising i have to say

Do Lego do Zombie miniatures ?

I have noticed a lot of custom Lego accessories appearing these days, plus stickers for characters of film and other related material.

What about vehicles ? you will need abandoned cars and emergency services for the zombie look

The Necromunda Project: Fallout @ 2012/03/18 16:16:39

I have been collecting vehicle kits for a few years now! Especially city services vehicles, and semi trucks
Yep LDD, lots of custom bitz out there nowadays, Brick Arms is huge now, and just makes weapons and accessories.

No, I'm just using the smiley faced townies as zombies, makes it more creepy. I Have plenty of those heads!

Lex Luthor has captured Wonder Woman.
Superman is about to tear the hose from Lex's Krypton Cannon

Will Wonder Woman be able to break free the instant superman spills liuquid kryptonite all over his tights and drops like a rock?

Thanks guys!
The firehouse has a rec room floor even, with a ping pong table.

I too am impressed with how far they have come with these, these sets are just too cool IMHO, great idea, sooo many uses.
They are all modular, so you can take out a floor, make the building smaller, or play inside the building rooms easily.

All of these buildings (except the Corner Grand Emporium- I bought that one) were gifts from my wonderful GF!

So, meanwhile, I buy and stock up on multiples of various parts through dealers at shows, or BrickLink, or even the rare occasion I get to the LEGO store in Indianapolis and get to use the Pick-a-Brick wall of joy. So I'll have enough bricks to construct my own modular buildings in the pattern of the official sets.

I've always been interested in stop-motion animation with LEGO, but I would need to invest in equipment instead of MOAR LEGO.

LOL @ Vik
Tonight (if work does not make me homicidal today) I think I will be having my own Spring Cleaning in the mancave. I need to reorganize all my hobby tools and redo the painting bench entirely. I picked up a few more of the ever-so-useful bamboo spice racks from Wal Mart for my paint bottles. Right now I have some on racks, some on shelves, and some in a drawer. It would be most useful to have all my colors within reach, especially now that I have expanded my paint arsenal to include more airbrush paints.

From a small pond outside the shop, an inspirational voice sounds "Rivet, rivet, rivet, rivet" over and over again.

It's been such nice weather (thanks to Global Warming) I've had the garage door open, loving the breeze and the birds. But alas, it IS too quiet. Rivets are coming soon!

Yes, Donald Duck. My favorite. Is everybody aware that he is the singular inspiration for the art form known as Manga?? Osamu Tezuka basically used him as his master template for all his drawings.....

Yep! All Manga got started as Disney Knock-offs!

the closest thing to that i cant think of was Wonderballs, it was a chocolate ball with themed candies on the inside and stickers, but something that legit would be an awsome treat as a kid

look more into the playmobil range... there you get conons that can shoot harpoonlike objects...

at RW... i thought that Kinderüberraschung is also available in the USA...hmmm? here in europe they are all around...and i loved them when i was a kid and my kids still love them^^ ...beside... the cheaper stuff you get inside...it is always good for some detailed scratchbuilding

oh and i do have the Umlaute on my keyboard... do you can see them?
ÖÄÜ
could be that you can´t see them...

I believe firing NERF (or playmo) darts at other people's painted miniatures may be frowned upon

The Necromunda Project: Fallout @ 2012/03/23 10:57:58

Post by: Viktor von Domm

as long as these won´t hit my minis off the table i would be ok with that...

Well, no, obviously i woildn't be firing them in game. just for show really.....

That's a nice clean workplace Dave. Good that I infected you with SCD. Vik is right, the assorted glues look good, nice range. I'm slightly ambivalent with magnetic storage solutions. I have one for my dremel bits, but the disadvatage is that the bits become magnetic too and if you ever use them on ferromagnetic metals you'll have a hard time cleaning it up again.

Yep, that is definately the downside- this is why I am no longer storing my pliers and clippers there. Too much a pain in the butt.
