This will be a preheresy RP, It may continue to post heresy, but we will see. This thread will be the signup and OOC thread For a character use this format Name Background Wargear Powers/Abilities Note that this is preheresy, so no Codex Astartes to follow, no Storm Shields (Except for rare cases) PLEASE do not make your character OP, go along with what other people post, even if you don't like it, don't make a reaction changing it, instead, contribute more to it. Not everything can be solved in a single post, it may take a little while. Don't post over and over again, let other people post first ^^^^ None of these rules apply to this thread, it is the Out Of Character discussion thread, so feel free to discuss anything about the RP here. We are the Night Lords. We spread the fear of the Emperor to our enemies, the terror we instill in the hearts of our foes is unmatched. All enemies fall at our feet, begging for mercy, or a swift death. We shall continue our wave of dominance throughout the galaxy, we are the true heralds of death. Not much is known about the organization of the Night Lords, we know they had companies like other legions, each squad was called a claw. Our role will be the 3rd company of the Night Lords Zso Sahaal, Captain of the 3rd Company - Lord Magnus Wargear - Jump Pack, Artificer Armour, Lightning Claws, Bolt Pistol. Brother Acharias - Company Champion, Second in Command. - Great White Wargear - All sorts of CCW's of his choosing, Bolt Pistol, Bolter, Artificer Armour Brother Adric - Forge Master, Artificer. - Admiral9 Wargear - Servo Harness, Artificer Armour, Bolt Pistol, Power Weapon. Morias Kalvae - DarkofVoid Bolters, Bolt Pistols, CCW's, Power Armour. 7th Claw - 10 man Assault Squad - Talons of Fear Jump Pack, Power Armour, Chainswords, Bolt Pistols. 8th Claw - 10 man Assault Squad - Bringers of Fate Jump Pack, Power Armour, Chainswords, Bolt Pistols. 9th Claw - Bike Squad - Riders of Destruction Sgt. Krieg "Death Speaker" Rurik - Toastedandy Chainswords, Bolt Pistols, Astartes Bikes, Power Armour 10th Claw - Heavy Weapon's Squad - Bearers of Immolation Various Heavy Weapons, Power Armour, Bolt Pistols. Note: All Wargear is the base squad wargear, that they always have access too, not your personal Wargear. If you want to select a main character, then post that character as your name, and make a background for them. People who ask for roles first will get them. Each Squad has a Sergent or Leader, who has access to a wider range of wargear, no one has to abide by the codex, but remember in Marine and Assault squads that Night Lords are quick moving, so heavy weapons are discouraged. Also, Codex Astartes to follow. Remember that while they are loyal, Night Lords are typically not extremely devoted to the Emperor, and they went rogue before the heresy.

Background: Possessed of a macabre wit and scornful demeanor, Krieg found himself promoted quickly within the ranks of the Night Lords. Krieg is a potent warrior, whose tally of heads taken in the name of the Night Haunter he himself had long lost count of. Rumours of Krieg's prayers to the old gods in the heat of battle have been dismissed as nothing but vox interference. Krieg has led the glorious Haggard Circle into battle for nigh fifty years.
Wargear - Power fist, melta bombs, plasma pistol, Bike
Appearance:
Abilities. Gifted hunter and master of stealth tactics, one of the highest ranking riders in the company.

On Nostramo, Leonidus was an young progeny from a line of infamous doctors, surgeons of unparelled skill. Even while young, he always had a certain skill when it came to human physiology, which was seen as a useful asset to the newly formed Night lord's ranks. A true pessimist and of dark morals, he cares next to nothing for those he heals, only that it helps win the battle again enemy skum. For a reason known only to him, Leonidus never allows others into his quaters, refusing enterance nearly to the point of violence. This, coupled with his bleak outlook causes many to believe that he is mentaly unstable. Other, more suspicious comrades believe he is hiding something. At the moment however, it is unknown. While in combat he always hides his face behind his personalised skull helm, a prototype model equipped with amazingly high tech comunications capabilities as well as an advanced targeting matrix and numerous enhanced sensors, giving him amazing accuracy and senses even for a marine while he wears it. For his long years in service to the imperium, Leonidus has been given the honour of becoming chief Apothecary, and his influencial words are heeded by many, young and old, from neophites to veterans.
In combat always acompanied by his Nocturnus guard, an elite group of stenguard veterans.
Wargear: artificer armour, master crafted bolt pistol 'Bloodbolt', Power sword 'Doctor's orders', apothicary gubbins.
Powers and abilities: Highly experienced healer, Advanced targeting, info and vid link matrixes (In the helmet).
Name: Lucius Peris
Background: A new recruit to the Night Lords legion, Peris has already proven his might in ranged warfare, able to land a shot dead between the eyes of his victim from 500 paces. He will often separate from his squad, aiming to get a vantage point. He is calm and calculated compared to most Night Lords, able to keep his mind sharp even in the thickest of the fighting. He is utterly loyal to his Legion, and will lay down his life for another Marine if it comes to it

Personality: Morias is a man of stern complexion; dependable and efficient. He is slow to anger and judge, all qualities which serve him well as a Sergeant.
Rank: Sergeant
Wargear: Bolt pistol, Chainsword, Frag & Krak grenades, Mk 5 Power Armour.
Background: Morias Kalvae has served as a Space Marine in the 3rd company for as long as he can remember. He has been in four distinct squads, the latest of which he rose to command four years ago when the previous sergeant, a trusted friend of Morias's, was killed by a foul alien whose species had taken to plundering a world of the Imperium. Despite still being a relatively new sergeant, Kalvae has proven himself a capable leader and has served with distinction, leading his squad, the 6th Claw, the Ghosts of Moonlight, to greater feats of triumph and glory with each passing battle and campaign.

Epistolary Karras Nox
Background:
Growing up in the underbelly of Nostramo, Karras Nox lived alone, abandoned by his parents. He was shunned by all, no gang would accept him as everyone felt uncomfortable in his presence. Many attempts were made to kill him, but Karras always walked forth unscathed, prewarned by unnatural visions of the actions of those who wished him harm. His enemies would often be found with strange electrical burns marking their flesh. On acceptance into the Night Lords he was singled out for the Librarium, and has since honed his skills in battle until he attained the rank of Epistolary.

Under the helmet: Grey hair, green eyes, black and pepper stubble
Personality: Not the oldest of the legion yet still skilled, methodical and efficient. He is battle hardened and stern with a strong sense of respect for his superiors. Those younger than him, however, would be advised to follow his council
Rank: Battle Brother
Wargear: MK5 Power armour, Bolter, frag and krak grenades, bolt pistol
Background: The history of this marine spans centuries. He has fought every enemy of the imperium, slain thousands and save thousands. He has visisted hundreds of worlds and killed their inhabitants. He means for his career to continue for as long as possible. He wishes to fight for his Emperor, this is his only goal, his only joy. The only reason that he is not a sargeant or of even higher rank is the simple fact that he refuses promotion. To serve the emperor is a great honour, it is the only reward he requires.
He came to the present squad by chance, not by choice. His last squad was oblitereated with him being left as the only survivor. He has taken it upon himself to guard the younger members of the squad and to advise the sargeant as much as possible. He'll still smack the pup if he gets out of line though.

The master of the forge saw his accomplishments and decided he would be trained to become a tech marine. 7 years later robert has returned ready to serve again with even more vigor.
Robert always is grim and whenever someone comes in for repairs all he can do is blame you for your faults he is very stubborn and he keeps distant from most night lords.

Deadshot wrote:Edvard Einer- Sergeant of 3rd Cla
Edvard Einer was just 14 when he was recruited to the Emperor's cause, and inducted into the (6th?) Legion. He was a student at the most prestigious art academy of its time, the Beauty of Battle academy, training to be a painter, as a remembrancer in the Great Crusade when it was first launched. The day the Emperor began recruiting, he had been in a fight. A thug had attacked and murdered his mother in a shop. He pursued, eventually catching up. Having always been very tall and heavy set, he fought the thug, using techniques he had painted for the last twelve years. He broke the man's.neck with a single roundhouse kick. At that point the Emperor himself had been in the vicintiy. He congratulated the boy and offered his condolences, and.offered the boy a place in his Space.Marines.
So he became a Night Lord. When the Crusade came to Nostromo, and Kurze introduced his terror tactics, he was the first to embrace it as a mere assault marine of the 15th company. He personally modified each armour plate, painting it with positively terrifying images. Eventually he rose to become Sgt of the 3rd Claw of 3rd Company. He has remained there ever since.
Einer wields a pair of beautiful yet terrifying Power Axes, as well as a single Lightning Claw he named "Nightshredder." His axes are called "Darkhood" and " Nightmonger." He primarily wields his axes, though he keeps a bolt pistol ready along with Nightshredder as holdout weapons.
His power armour is painted with lifelike images of death and destruction. This image has allowed him to scare more than one enemy warrior into paralysis, allowing him to decapite them. In fact, he is infamous for it.
Einer is nothing less than the true embodiment of fear.
Lord Magnus wrote:
Zso Sahaal, Captain of the Third Company of the Night Lords Legion.
Sahaal is a notorious leader, Nocturne born, he assisted Batm- I mean Night Haunter in controlling Goth- I mean the capital city of Nocturne. Acting as peacekeeping and fear spreading agent. When he was made an Astartes, he was elevated to the position of Captain for his past deeds though, he was never close to Curze himself... No one truly was.
As a leader, he specializes in the hit and run terror tactics, which he uses to great affect. During a campaign where the leaders of the human planet resisted being taken under the wing of the Imperium, Sahaal discovered a secret bunker of one of the leaders of the insolent planetary army. He stalked the bodyguards inside and left them impaled for their leader to find, one by one. By the time the general had passed the bodies of the many impaled officers and mighty warriors who were with him, not knowing what creature had done this, he wished for death, and Sahaal did not disappoint.
As a warrior, he is known to disappear and re-appear quickly and quietly. Though he typically works alone, he coordinates his forces to make surgical strikes against targets. A few men disappearing here and there, until entire platoons are wiped out. These tactics demoralize what leaders there are left to either flee blindly into a trap, or corner themselves where they are easy to finish. His lightning claws, and those of his company, are not the typical gauntlets wielded by other chapters, but long blades that slide forth from the wrists. He and his company are some of the most skilled jump pack marine veterans in the Night Lords legion, and his entire forces are typically airborne. He makes use of Storm Eagle gunships often, and has his own personal lander which can carry 25, as opposed to the typical 20 marines, so he can take his personal field commanders, as well as squads. His fleet includes the stealth frigate "Midnight's Glory" Which he uses as his flagship, as well as 2 Storm Bird Dropships, and 4 Storm Eagle gunships, including his own. The lightning strikes of the 3rd are well known to all, and they continue to spread terror, and bring glory to the Night Lords legion, with every foe they face.
Wargear: The Talons of the Night, named for the deadly eternal sleep brought by those who hardly know the have been hit until they are gone, he also has a bolt pistol built into each set, so he doesn't have to reach for a ranged weapon. Artificer Armour crafted by his own Forge Master, it is very high quality armour, which also has a disruptor built in, allowing him to become extremely camouflaged while not moving quickly, and also interfering with autosenses which try to target him. The Imperiums finest Jump Packs are said to adorn the members of the 3rd company of the Night Lords, Sahaal's personal jump pack is no exception.
Powers/Abilities: Sahaal is known to inspire terror in his foes through gruesomely brutal displays, which he has a gift for. He is very stealthy, and while not necessarily the master of this aspect for the Company, his silent jump pack affords him a great advantage in this area of warfare. He is a master of speed and pinpoint precision, giving up most defense for a powerful ambush style offensive fighting style.
TheAngrySquig wrote:Name- Harper Layhe
Background- Sergeant Harper was one of the first marines to be recruited from Nostramo after Kurze was found. He was quickly commended for his skill in hand to hand combat and rose to be a proficient assault sergeant. When his predecessor Allo Carvius was killed in fighting, Kurze saw to it personally that Harper was elevated to the position of 2nd Claw Sergeant. He has proved himself hundreds of times, showing particular skill in fighting the Eldar of the Craftworlds. His claim to fame in the legion is that one time when leading the assault on a Craftworld ship, the Drop Pods meant to deploy his task force were damaged and could not be repaired in time. So he took his armor, his jump pack, and his chainsword, a blade crafted for him after he saved a Salamanders Terminator squad from walking directly into an Eldar trap, and flew through space, landing on the primary window of the ship. He slashed through it after five minutes of punishing fire from the Wraithbone defenders and entered the ship alone. Two days later, after the Drop Pods had been repaired and a task force was being prepared, the entire Craftworld exploded in a vicious series of explosions and screams. Harper's body drifted back to the Battlebarge, damaged, but alive. Since then, no one has seen his face, having it forever hidden behind his MKIII plate.
Wargear- MKIII artificer armor, plasma pistol, jump pack, Drake's Tooth, melta bombs
Powers/Abilities- He leads by example and rumors float around the company that the Eldar ship gave him some sort of regenerative power, but this has never been proven, and no one has been fool enough to ask.

Personality: Completely devoted and sometimes immovable from a firing position, his rock hard attitude allows him to brave incoming fire while returning his own withering barrage. Known as Sergeant "Scream" due to the relentless noise of his heavy bolter and his booming voice which can be heard over it.
Background: As a scout he was considered a "grey man", one of those who did not shine yet performed out of the limelight. His quiet acts of duty were noted and was soon promoted to a devastator squad. During a cleansing of a corrupt Imperial world he had shown great fortitude in defending the loyal rulers of the world from a massive assualt of traitors. Leaving the killing fields littered with dead and being the only survivor of his squad it was apparent he was the only choice to lead a newly formed squad. Many times his men held onto impossible ground, costing them dearly each time. They earned the title of Bearers of Immolation due to their sacrifices in battle.
Personal Wargear: Heavy bolter which has caused fear and anguish into any that cross his field of fire. He and his weapon have earned the name "Scream" due to cries of the wounded and the screams stolen from the piled dead he usually leaves after a torrent of shells. His heavy bolter was forged into the shape of a horrific monster with a gaping jaw which spews fire.

I haven't RP'd since last summer, but with a 4 month gap, I'm sure I can make the time, for Iron warriors anyway.
From what I've seen, RP's generally last longer if the player is giving free reign over their individual faction, with a global objective. this does lead to OP situations, but even if people are each given a squad for say a large crusade than people can use whatever faction they want. But still be given a large amount of control over the actions/theme of their squad

But him getting put into battle brought out his inner ferosity, making him a killing machine. His precision with the blade was unmatched, leaving him to be put in charge of a veteran assault squad. He now flies into battle wielding his power sword, slaughtering all who oppose. Wargear: Jump pack, Artficer Armor, Barbed Power Sword " The Bat Tooth", Retractable lightning claws, Plasma pistol with lightning blue plasma. Lightning Krak grenades. Powers/Abilities: Extremely skilled with a sword, unmatched by any in his army. Likes to crash into the midst of the combat. Squad Wargear(Unless you want to join the squad): Power sword, Retractable lightning claws, Bolt Pistols.

Here is my signup for tech marine. Name: Robert (Really bad with this xD) Background: Robert used to be a neophyte at the night lords. He never liked the hit and run tactics of the night lords but had always admired the iron warriors as well as the mechanicum of mars. One day out in the field one of the artificers was doing some emergency repairs on a skimmer but it refused to work. Robert took a look at it and successfully managed to repair it. Wargear: Servo arm/Plasma cannon/Artificer armor Powers/Abilities: Power of the machine spirits: I can replace the souls of a machine with my own for a temporarily time meaning i can control a single machine no matter how powerful.

Name- Harper Layhe

Leonidus Gourd:
On Nostramo, Leonidus was an infamous doctor, a surgeon of unparelled skill. He always had a certain skill when it came to human physiology, which was seen as a useful asset to the newly formed Night lord's ranks. While in combat he always hides his face behind his personalised skull helm, a prototype model equipped with an advanced targeting matrix and numerous enhanced sensors, giving him amazing accuracy and senses even for a marine while he wears it.
Wargear: artificer armour, master crafted bolt pistol 'Bloodbolt', Power sword 'Doctor's orders', apothicary gubbins.
Powers and abilities: Highly experienced healer, good with a gun.

Can I be an Epistolary? Name: Epistolary Karras Nox Background: Growing up in the underbelly of Nostramo, Karras Nox lived alone, abandoned by his parents. Wargear: Bolt pistol, Force sword ("Storm Bringer"), Power armour Powers/Abilities: Foresight, Smite, Force dome, Quickening. Gate of Infinity.

Sorry for the time, Last day of school, lots of Latin to finish.

Edvard Einer- Sergeant of 3rd Cla

Sargeant Taric- Sargeant. First Claw

Hey Andy, haven't seen you since the last Inquisition game, how you been man?
Will get a character and post up in a bit, got other games to tend to first.
Don't suppose I could get a brief outline of what's happened so far and who's playing which characters? Been a long time since I roleplayed on Dakka, lots of new faces around.

Sgt. Krieg "Death Speaker" Rurik
Appearance: Shoulder length black hair, handsome, gaunt face. Twitches and fidgets uncontrollably in the quiet before battle.
Abilities. Gifted hunter and master of stealth tactics, one of the highest ranking riders in the company.
Are we assigned to a squad or can we make our own?

Well, we just started and are preparing to land on a rebel human planet to massacre them, nothing has actually happened yet.
We have a list of people for a posting order in the OP on the main thread, for organizational purposes it is easier to have an order, especially in an environment where many people are not highly experienced. There are to many characters to name here, but in the OP of this thread they are listed, basically everyone is taking sergeants.

admiral9 wrote:I'm back guys won my first 3000 points battle i loved it.

Well, masters of the forge are members of the chapter council, I assume that'd be the same even pre-heresy. They probably have the authority to request troops and command them in battle, though due to their positions fulfilling more of a support role they defer to the actual battlefield commanders such as captains and sergeants I would presume.
53940
Post by: admiral9
But i guess that a chapter is as large as a company from the great crusade so i think per company 1 master of the forge and i am that guy. So basically i can provide advice to the commander because of my rank?
36015
Post by: Toastedandy
Yeah, i think they are outside the traditional chain of command, but are still on the council.
The Master of the Forge is an Astartes Chapter's most senior Techmarine, charged with the maintenance of the Chapter's fleet of armoured fighting vehicles, such as Rhinos, Land Raiders and Predators. His knowledge of the arcane sciences has been refined over centuries of service, and rivals that of the senior Tech-priests of the Adeptus Mechanicus of Mars. The Master of the Forge is so skilled that he can tell what is wrong with a vehicle's Machine Spirit at but a glance. Such skills conspire to make the Master of the Forge something of an outcast in most Space Marine Chapters. Though he is always part of the Chapter Council, the Master of the Forge is an outsider to all save his subordinate Techmarines, whose company is shunned in all matters save those that pertain to his beloved mechanicals.

@Robot - Apothecary's are usually part of the command staff, however I don't think they hold a higher rank than sergeants.
But don't take my word for it, my 40k lore is rusty. I'd go look it up on Lexicanum.

Apothecary, Epistolary, Forge Master, and Champion are like a command squad to me, If I go into battle with a squad, it is with them, they are all basically advisers to the captain.

@Blap, you could be seconded to a command squad, though most likely you'd just be deployed via drop pod with your squad. Fancy teaming up with Morias' unit?

That could happen. Acting on your Torpedo idea, make 'em boarding torpedoes and fire at buildings. Hilarity ensues as the Sergeant tries to disembark into a tree.

No Banebladez for you. Remember the requirement 'Not OP'? Ofcourse not OP i am gonna make it a relic i wanna post that it was one of the first ever made patterns and as a relic i will keep it in my personal forge. This would be better for a separate mission. We should focus on the landing and securing a beachhead, as it were, first. I know. I want to do this after the battle has escalated a bit more. Because then missions will need to be carried out to weaken and eventually kill the enemy.

My plan is simple. Stick them with the pointy end and fire off a couple of psychic lightning shots. No need to be toppling a Warhound with it!

I say, while killing the renegades, we find a small temple/altar to chaos, and well, chaos ensues.

Screw it, forget the KoS. Leave that for later, when we actually discover the taint of Chaos and build up to it (If we do).

This posting order thing is infuriating, not sure how you lot manage to put up with the desire to write and not being allowed to.

Well, seeing as there isnt any major event, and I presume we all are going to do our own form of slaughter, should we not momentarily forget about the posting order? as long as we dont do anything OTT

I suggest going for a similar rule to survivor games. You can post at any time, as long as there have been posts by four others before you repost, or if the thread has been silent for 2 hours, rather than a posting order. that way we have an order of sorts, but it also eliminates most of the confusion.
51344
Post by: BlapBlapBlap
I like dat. But an order does help, as one of the main problems is that people will still be posting all over the place.
25727
Post by: Darkvoidof40k
Yeah, we're not gaining anything waiting around here. Posting order is only really necessary when there is a sequence of events directly involving several characters, which should generally be handled in GM events. I disagree, many of the best games can have up to 4-5 posts by the same person in a row, if necessary.

That's down to having a good player base; restricting their ability to post won't let them learn otherwise. Hell, I remember when I was like that a couple of years ago. It just takes practice to get better at text-based roleplaying.

We have Blap thr conservative side.
And we have Darkvoidof40k the progressive side.
And finally we have castiel the side that is making a compromise and im support Castiels choice that way there will be some sort of order.

But it isn't entirely free. With a bit of common sense and the 4 post rule there shouldn't be any bother.

Thanks, credit where credit is due and all; I have been roleplaying for a good few years now, largely on this site (up until last summer).
If people start posting contradictions or getting too over the top, we simply point it out and help them correct it. Otherwise people don't learn and the game will simply slow down and become a sluggish affair. I realise games that speed up too quickly can become a real hassle to handle, and because of that on my site we've developed a number of ways of helping with that.
I appreciate it's a lot more difficult keeping track on Dakka, but I insist we are allowed freedom to post when we want to.
Of course, within reason.

So. how're we gonna do this then. Free for all (don't all rush at once though!) or 4 post rule? Dark, what would you recommend for us, we're all fairly new to this, so which do you reckon wouldd be best to start with?

Well now, it's not a free for all as such. On the Penthouse, we often have pages and pages of OOC to simply discuss how best to proceed in a couple of posts. But generally, it's best to trust the player's individual judgements for most posts. Just be sure to remind each other if we "cross the line" of OTT.
Everyone post, if they want to, but just be aware of what's going on. It's always useful to have a couple of tabs open when involved in RPGs on forums, one for the post, one for the OOC thread, one for looking up other information (such as characters, locations etc) or just general forum surfing.
Now if there are no objections, I'll start work on a post.

Could be interesting.. Castiel wrote:Darkvoidof40k wrote:Castiel wrote:So. how're we gonna do this then. Free for all (don't all rush at once though!) or 4 post rule? Admiral, just a suggestion, d'you think you could try writing in third person? It's the standard for RPG's.. of course, first person is useful and does have its place now and then, but 3rd tends to read better.
