I know this may sound strange but have you tried dolls house supplies, I had some time ago some pieces of thin pieces of wood with brick shapes cut into them.

They are designed for dolls houses might work, look very uniformed as well

No, Jam is preserves- made from whole fruit and sugar- Jelly is made from fruit JUICE and sugar.

We produce most of the world's potatoes, so that gives us the right to rename them I guess

The difference is Americans openly adapt world cuisine and make it our own. BBQ meat is really the only cuisine we invented.

Look we have Pot pies, which are savory and filled with gravy, meats, and veggies. Then we have proper desert pies filled with fruit or creams.

Pudding is a sweet here, several flavors all sugary.

Black pudding is well, something that was to stave off starvation., Spotted Dick is weird, and Plum or christmas pudding resembles a mound of stuffing!

To enjoy the benefits of eating fish while minimizing exposure to mercury, you should eat mainly types of fish low in mercury and also limit your consumption of types of fish with typically higher levels of mercury.

Fish are important in a healthy diet. They are a lean, low-calorie source of protein. However, some fish may contain methylmercury or other harmful chemicals at sufficiently high levels to be a concern. Federal, state and local governments issue fish consumption advisories when the fish are unsafe to eat. The advisories may suggest that people avoid eating certain kinds or certain amounts of fish. Some advisories apply to specific water types (like lakes). Some may focus on groups of particularly sensitive people. Some advisories include notices of "no restriction" to tell us that certain fish are safe to eat. As states increase the waters they monitor for contaminated fish, both the number of advisories and the waters where it is safe to eat fish are increasing. Visit the links below to learn more about mercury in fish, fish consumption advisories, and state fish advisories.

If you are concerned for your health or your family's as a result of exposure to mercury, get in touch with your health care provider. They will be able to tell you if mercury exposure is a problem for you and what to do about it.

It's just plastic pipes laid in putty, pvc foam walls, Square rod corner, textured plasticard floor, railroad ballast, cork bits, and wire rebar.

You could use anything really- You just need to whittle away the nicks and chunks with clippers and a knife in strategic spots.

I am not set up for mold-making at all. Galorn has been my designated mold-maker so far, and he has convention and contest prep keeping him busy. This is a one-off, so no casts.

I'll make you a deal, guarantee me 200 sales, at 5 bucks a piece and I'll get right on it!

Every day of my life I bust my ass for a fraction of the pay I'm worth, all because "I care" or some gak. With my hobby stuff, I'm either going to do it completely for ME, or it needs to be profitable. No more "because I care" BS for me, it isn' worth it

Agreed! But you know damn well that people would buy you vending machines and if that base is any indication custom bases. If you are ready for a change I know people will buy your wears. Small at first then grow to more product range. You have the talent to do amazing things in this hobby. Profiting " a little" isn't the an evil thing.

I would buy that base its spot on and one with a slightly higher wall would be great for a sniper pose

What Is PVC foam ? never heard of that and where can I get

The Necromunda Project: Fallout @ 2012/04/08 17:20:38

Post by: dsteingass

I really dunno LDD, it's just like PVC pipe, but apparently sprayed or formed into sheets?? Thicker than styrene, but stronger, yet it has a toasted marshmallow texture about it when cutting. 1000% easier to cut than PVC pipe though. I got a supply when I bought the Raboesh styrene display rack.

Practice your google-fu young padawan
http://www.pvcfoam.com/

I think it is the stuff that will be later known in 40k times to be "Plascrete"

I was trying for the cracked wasteland look- but maybe, we'll see after some gravel and such on the flat bits? Or should I just push in some cracks at random, making different height variations?

These cracks always seem like they should be perfectly flat though?

This is some old textured stuff I got from a model railroad shop many, many years ago. But it's very brittle, like old vinyl siding brittle

Sweet find Rivets …… accidents make perfect just great stuff

I will have a base exactly the same as the one built (as it looks so dam cool ) and one with a larger wall section for a sniper to be kneeling in front of if you get my jist

PVC Foam will google my master and then find enlightenment

Love the muppet song although the misses is looking at me like I am deranged

The Necromunda Project: Fallout @ 2012/04/08 18:44:47

Post by: dsteingass

You Are!

I had to PROVE this method wasn't just a fluke!

So, here is the tut, for all who are interested

Spooge putty onto base

Spread putty around, beyond the rim a bit

Cut a piece of round Granny Grating to fit

Clamp it, let it cure

I did not let it cure long enough, and ruined mine.
Wait 20-25 minutes i'd say.

Trim the edge with a knife, Garnish with metalwork of your choice, and Rivet to taste

I scored all the sides of the brisket in a criss-cross pattern, and rubbed spices into the cracks
Then I Seared all the sides in a hot frying pan (to hold in the juicy goodness)

Slooow roasted for 4 hours!!

Tell you what, I'll hire you as the broker guy then!
-You arrange a mold-maker and the sales
-I build stuff, and I always get a copy of the molds, and design credits.
-We split everything THREE ways: The three-way split can never be modified

There are my terms.
Any takers?

I reckon there is profit to be made on dakka - if you remember I used to sell mugs... The only reason that became unprofitable was because I didn't have my own shed. But for such tiny things as bases you are onto a winner - low postage cost and high per unit profit - no materials or tools needed that you don't already have. Sounds like a winner.

Plus we all love your work and would be proud to own a bit of it.

-Don't worry, I am making another set of 5 heroic bases in the same style, including a sniper corner- those will be for the casting.

40mm eh? I can do that, no problem. I have never had an Ogryn fig, so I never knew what size bases they used.

These are all drilled and pinned, so no problem removing the minis.

The bases will need to be cast in resin, I don't think Hydrocal would be very condusive to the occasional figure diving from the table. The same molds will work for either plaster or resin though.

wow...easter and so much nice things to find...

i am really impressed of your artful way of making customized bases!!! the sniper base looks good enough to be eaten... fortunatly that won´t happen as i see yet again a very creative man not being able to model but to cook surpreme as well!!! that pic of your brisket was very tasty to behold!^^ the list of ingredients was yummy as hell^^... if but my family was more into meat... i would surley try this too...

i second the need for bigger bases for the supie mutie^^ it has to be done...AND! i want tosee you come up with something bigger for a base...biger canvas gives you even more oportuities to go ballistic with your modeling!

and that new mini you showed...marbo counts as... looks very bad ass... yesterday we watched avatar on TV (TV premier here in germany...) ad it reminds me of that evil commander..(forgot his name...)

also: i have now on my to buy list: PVC foam...have to see what it is called in german tho...and that green putty... it is on my tobuy list or quite some time now.,..

cheers, vik

Thanks Vik! I was hoping you'd find your Easter basket of Dakka enjoyable! I always look forward to your comments before anyone elses.

Bigger bases are not a problem at all, I have a bunch in different sizes to work with.

What other kinds of ground textures do you guys want to see on bases? What sizes of bases?

well it sure was a pleasure to see that nice meal of yours...had it already? hopefully it was all yoiu expected it to be^^

as for basesizes...well dreadnought size...and then bijer size as well... also have you thought about making a scratchbuild roughrider of yours? i think that would be a cool project for you... maybe with a hint of fallout too?...the more i thikn of it this sounds like instant win!^^ for all of us even if you not cast it then...

as for your new found way of riveting.... i recently came to a shop that sells granny grating...this way of yours needs to be investigated upon on the hightest level... you know...scientists have to cross test theories for the matter of true acceptance of those to get acknowledgment

The Brisket was soooo tender, it fell apart in your fingers! And sooo packed full of flavor! The fat drippings into the cider liquid, made a sweet and tangy gravy that was excellent over the potatoes and sweet, fresh veggies!
I slept like a champ last night

I've already built big, burly Roughrider bikers using SM bikes and catachans, I'll have to show them off someday, I think the bikes need updated to match my current skills though.

So 25mm round (check)
40mm round
heavy weapon/Dreadnought round
Rectangular mount bases too?

What kind of textures though??
We know I've already got rivet-covered tread plate covered
What else?

There ARE a lot of custom bases on the market already, How will mine be different than the rest?
What is important to you that will make you purchase my bases over the others?

I would like to say the walling section is a good way to go with your bases, most market base bases have small parts of destroyed brick wall rather than a larger section as you have done.

Plus the flooring detail was an extra cool touch, maybe kept along the same lines but ad some small piping to the walls electrical boxes hell even a broken sink

Plus the under flooring damaged piping showing, these are what have really made these stand out and work for me, you could add a wooden flooring or more a concrete looking one.

For a lager base you could add the remanent of the second floor, the part of the floor section just above

Glad you are casting in resin that works best for me

Always a post-slog after the weekend! And where to start?

First off, I am now hungry for Brisket, Gyros, Meatballs, and Butterscotch Pudding. Damn you all.

The bases look amazing Dave! If you are making more for casting,I just want to say make sure there are no spots in the pipes and such that are too deep. They won't cast well. First hand experience talking here. But you know some of this with the floor and wall sections you made before. And if you make the rebar too long or crooked, they might not come out well too. But I can't wait for these! I'll get some for sure! Are pre-orderes being taken yet?

Mmmmmmmmmmm Brisket.. *drool*

I know...tell that to the people hounding me every time I fart to make a cast of it!

You just can't make a working mold out of any old thing, it takes planning. It isn't even possible to make a mold out of LDD's sniper base is has so many undercuts.
It doesn't work that way.

Sometimes, I just want to build stuff (well all the time really).

The Necromunda Project: Fallout @ 2012/04/09 17:02:15

Post by: RSJake

Yeah, but you know, you could just make it your way, and let whoever is casting it worry about filling in the undercuts and stuff.

But seriously, you need to cast that fart! Big money for it! I can see it now!

I'd probably be done with my Steam Walker by now if I wasn't trying to make it castable.

I am!!
because:

1. I don't know what I am doing with Silicone
2. I don't have the set-up
3. I don't have the suppliers
4. I don't have the time and patience to stop, and figure out why my gak isn't casting properly (like your current problem Jake), and you HAVE to, because you are so far invested in it already!

So, if I get cranky, it's not because I think "cast them herpa derpa" is a bad idea, I WANT to be able to make millions of identical copies (who wouldn't?)
..... but it is because it is just not in the cards, on the table, or even in the stars for me right now.

It is a stupid idea for me to try and build the masters, make the molds, cast, market, and sell them all myself. It's just not practical.

Contrary to popular belief, having faith, and wishing really hard does not make something come true, doing so only sets you up for failure. And I get cranky when I am set up for failure, it happens to me ALL THE TIME in my work life. I can smell it a mile away, and I'm just not going there.

/

I truly LOVE all you guys/gals who follow my blog, I really do. The friendship, the perpetuation and evolution of ideas, and the talent pool is the most awesome thing I have ever experienced!
if you tell me it needs more rivets, I can solve that. If you tell me something looks wrong, I can solve that. But if you tell me to "cast it" I can't solve it, because I have no means to solve it, and not being able to solve problems REALLY frustrates me and makes me cranky and I can't help that, it is the way my brain is wired from working in IT for 15 years.

The Necromunda Project: Fallout @ 2012/04/09 19:08:14

Post by: RSJake

I can see that. And we just want you to be happy, and keep making your amazing stuff. The casting side of things has a very steep learning curve, and while it's not rediculously expensive to get into, there is an expense that made me stay away from it for a long time. I am by no means great at it. Only like 1 in 3 casts comes out worth a darn, but I'm getting better. My trash bin is mostly full of cut off sprue, not failed attempts.

But it is fun once you get into it. Trust me.

But I won't say anything else about you needing to cast something. I promise.

But just keep it in mind...you know...in case you change your mind.

There has got to be a way to get some non-retail pricing on some of this stuff, some wholesale distributor or something....

$153.03 a gallon for silicone is just bulllshiiiit!
http://www.smooth-on.com/Silicone-Rubber-an/c2_1113_1136/index.html?catdepth=1

and $85.85 a gallon for resin is also highway robbery!
http://www.smooth-on.com/Urethane-Plastic-S/c1120_1209/index.html?catdepth=1
This is white plastic though..maybe not even the right thing?

Yeah! I have always seen the Big boys like Ogryns and even Nid Warriors on 40mm bases due to their sheer bulk and size, hence my suggestion.

The granny Grating with the round holes was something like $0.75 a sheet at Michaels, pretty cheap really. But I think that drywall bead stuff that POX is using on his great board project

would also do the job. There is much experimenting yet to be done with the putty method!

by the way... what i would like to see, if you care to accept the challange is:

wooden floors
sewer bases?
bases that look like tops of crates and other storage thingies...

just off the top of my head...

If one enterprising individual has the free cycles to do both the marketing job and the molding/casting job and he/she takes 2/3 cut- well then, more power to them! It just isn't for me is all I'm saying.

Hey my interest in the casting was just because they looked so dam cool however I have got my sniper base so I am happy

Plus I can copy the general idea and maybe produce my own versions, the style is spot on Dave for what I want, the feel of a destroyed landscape damaged buildings and ruined surroundings

Just the look for what I want.

Just go back to creating what you like and what you do best mate …………. no room for frustration in a hobby LOL

Dave, unless you used a 3D printer, I wouldn't compare the basses. I have to tell meyself that a lot. Sure, there are some amazing things out there, but a lot of it is printed. And yes, they are really detailed and look great, but it's like comparing apples and oranges.

I'm not saying those bases from dragonforge are 3d printed, but they look like it.

I know it takes some skill to use the 3D programs, but it's a bit like cheating. IMO.

Hence why I play FO on an X-box! with the PC you can cheat like mad. I know a fella who makes himself immune to damage, thus eliminating the risk factor(And part of the fun) as he basically walks about having target practice. But of course on a console they do hand out achievements for healing with food/stimmpaks/sleep, etc.

A 200 c/ml mold is about 13$ worth of the smoothon sillicon. The typical volume of a base is between 10, and 15 c/ml.

I really like how the 40mm bases turned out. I was wondering about how thick a layer of GS are you putting on for this type of effect? And the edging really sets them apart from section to section. Any plans for a FO Gang?

Nice bases look great, work well with the mutants, concept gun needs to be built for future defence of the league

I would like to see a base with a manhole cover with the =L= motto in the middle

I scribed out the edges on the 40mm- better?

O.o Great stuff going on here Dave! I dig the scoring and design of these bases.

The Super-mutants look great on those bases! That BoS trooper better choose wisely who he shoots first!

hey dave... good looking 40mm bases right there...

darn too late... tho on my part as i was thinking you could do a lil watereffect on one of the empty places of the bases...? like radioactive goo or something...

also i am very eager to see how this newfound way of riveting might look painted...

oh and did i mention that the muities on bases looks very good? well they do^^

oh and i am about to upload the pics of my fixed chop-it... will post it in my thread tho to leave others more room to clutter around here^^

cheers, vik

Dave it's all looking awesome!
I'm loving the feel of those bases and I agree that I would love to see one with a manhole cover!

I'm loving the bevel around the edges I think that it makes them look more as if they were cut out of the ground!

Very cool!

Thanks Max, I didn't measure, just spooged some putty on the base and spread it around, Probably more than 1mm, once the granny grating is pushed into it, I scrape any excess spooging through the holes with a knife blade, it keeps the rivets (or safety mat, whatever) all at an equal height.

GS would probably work just as well though.

The BoS guys are already basically a gang (need Juves or initiates yet), and I'd love to expand the Enclave and Super Mutants into gangs as well, problem is the lack of different Sculpts for those factions so far by Brother Vinnie. He only makes 2 diff sculpts of BoS, and I converted 4 uniques from those two sculpts so far. Vault Dwellers, and Raiders can be converted from just about any figs. I have a bunch of VOID 1.1 minis and some cool Reaper Zombie hunter minis, and some 28mm Miners fro mBadger Games that will work well for other gangs. I need some Riot Police stuff to make Rivet City Security and/or Vault Security gangs too.

I would too, what size base? I have a pile of the heavy weapon team/sentinel bases. I am out of 40mm round bases (used my last two for the super mutants)- will need to get more, but didja see all the badass new Empire stuff out this month in White Dwarf!?! Holy Gak! A Very spendy summer coming up!

Hmelrose wrote:

Thanks man, I think the scribed lines added the extra depth that will pay off in the paint phase.

Here I used a wood stain marker I had handy to test that theory

shasolenzabi wrote:The Super-mutants look great on those bases! That BoS trooper better choose wisely who he shoots first!

If he is like me, he just needs to focus on shooting ONE of the muties, hit tab, use a bunch of stimpaks, and then finish the other mutie off

Viktor von Domm wrote:....i was thinking you could do a lil watereffect on one of the empty places of the bases...? like radioactive goo or something...

Good idea! Perhaps I will incorporate this into a future project.
I'm thinking of getting some neon green translucent paint, pouring thin layers of clear resin or varnish between translucent paint layers??

Thanks man! I'm hoping that little bit if extra sanding will give that very same effect when they are painted!

Fun with League Logos

The Necromunda Project: Fallout @ 2012/04/10 19:48:17

Post by: lone dirty dog

Go for the larger base with the manhole and any of those logos would work although 3rd top and 4bottom are my favourites you could raise the man hole slightly on one side and have a mutant arm sticking out slightly, just a thought

The stain looks quite good for showing the detail, but I think the green rivets would look better with a coat of paint and stain, just to show it a bit better

P.S. Copied those logo's hope you don't mind m ate

Dave, I like the 3rd on the top row! It says "Rivets" the most I think. Are we voting for an official symbol?

Would it possible to cut out one of those for me too? I think it would good on my walker when I get it done.

I was just playing around with different fonts in Visio, but yeah, if I can figure out how to cut all the elements seperately, we'll have a League Logo kit (some assembly will be required)

I was looking at one of those.

You like it? I may have to look into it.

Can you cut out stuff that you make? Or is it all pre-designed?

Yep, hacked...It's cool to use, but the real learning curve is gettign the graphics to have a single path, that is the path the blade travels-.

I don't know, but it only scores .040" (1mm) sheet styrene, it doesn't cut all the way through it to be "popped out" like it does with really thin .010 styrene or paper or card.

Dave how big are those Aquila's if you don't mind me asking. I was just thinking about airbrushing my thunderbolt, I was thinking of doing the Aquila look on the wings

Might make a good template

The Necromunda Project: Fallout @ 2012/04/10 21:01:03

Post by: dsteingass

The Aquila is in a Windows Font , you can install it on your PC from here.
http://www.members.tripod.com/rooksnest/40Kvariants/fonts.htm

I can cut them as big as you can print them on paper with that font. You have to think in flat layers. Just change the size of the font, like you do in Word.

The machine will cut any Vector Graphic, but it has to simplify the path in the drawing...it's hard to explain...google it for more info. it's a PITA sometimes.

Yes, normally, you have to buy Cricut's propriatary cartridge ROM's for different fonts, graphics, etc... But alas, the hacked part

hey dave... i like the idea of making a good looking league icon.... tho could i ask a favor?... could we have one without the dreaded warhammer skull? that is something the league is not standing for...after all we create things...we build them... to make them last for ever^^ death and decay...seems very unlikley for me to get involved and i think the skull is standing for that...i hope i am not spoiling things here...

Yeah, but some of us make things with rivets that DO kill things/people. It's more of a "don't mess with us" thing.

QFT!!

Like a small building or something for industrial Riveters! Stuff like that! Each "Occupation" could have a different symbol on their -=][_,=-

I think there should be a league chapter affililiation emblem. Like, mine would be large walkers (for the most part) or a flyer. Vik could have a robot., dave some cool guns crossed over each other or better yet his =]_,= could be emblazened over a really cool mini base........

Stuff like that.

LDD's could be blank..... LOL

Just a quick sketch of possible symbols. Some are cheeky, like the chicken leg, for food service rivets, but you get the idea. (well, someone did make a rivet cake...so there you go.)

I think we could have a standardized walker for Max, Vik and myself, is there a need to differentiate between walker sizes? Maybe, who knows.
