and -11 at night...brrr....we always sleep with open window...(wifes orders...) and this would mean me sleeping next to the open window...argh... the weatherman said it will get brutally cold next week here too...
Oh hell no Vik! With the window closed (above our heads) you can still feel the cold even with the electric mattress pad on and piled high with blankets. When it's that cold, the double-paned glass in the windows just conducts the cold.
Not much to show, just working the woodgrain with india ink
Still needs highlights
My walls of the doublewide were emitting cold, I have the window under a blackout blanket and sheet to stem the cold from the window, the walls are just as bad
it is because you live in wooden homes...we life in good steady stone houses...that once these are warm stay longer warm...tho if cold...stay longer cold too...
my wife on Monday returned to work....with no functioning heating system at work... the lil toddlers of her group at the kindergarden are all still crawling on the floor...at streetlevel... so no fun when the heat is down...and thus they had them play inside with woollen hats and ski pants still on... if I had been the boss of said facility... then I would have sent the kids back home...you are the one that´s guilty for getting the kids sick due to this cold...
Nah, a Doublewide is not made as well in my opinion as a actual foundation based house. is flimsier, and more likely to go up faster than a regular home in the event of fires.
Can't wait to get to Vegas and live in a consistantly warm environment.
Good job on the wood grain. I think we saw this from you before on the Submarine model, though. And then wasn't it a completely flat surface that you had to paint woodgrain onto?
Yeah Max, the SeaView I gave a 60's wood paneling vibe to it,
But my best woodgrain was the 1/35 Gangster diorama furniture
Both flat surfaces, in many ways much easier to do than something with a texture like the cart.
Yeah record lows here, record highs on your side of the planet Damo!
@Vik- the scale of the SeaView is 1/128- Max was right
@Weets- Why Thank you! On the SeaView- I don't remember! It was a mix of different colors for the scale, but for the 1/35 furniture, I mostly used straight Brown India Ink (Dr. PH Martins "Bombay" brand) in several layers of streaks with a really tiny brush
also...got a question... i think i´ve built myself into a corner...the ribs of the roof of my cabin are 0.69 inches appart... how big length and width should one single shigle be? i am currently really without an idea how i should cover the roof....last option currogated iron is still available but only as the very last option...
i ask this here as you still get way more traffic and even tho you are yourself one of the judges i am asking you as a proven able shingler of scalemodel houses^^
I'd cover them with flat card first Vik...then make your shingles, maybe 5x10mm. Ribs like that would normally be very close together. Take a look at this cutaway pic
Modern wooden houses have more (gable) rafters closer together for the ease of carrying up and nailing smaller, more managable sheathing boards. For a model though, you can get away with a solid piece of sheathing since it will be covered by shingles and won't be seen.
Here I used stir sticks just because they were pre-cut already at the right length
Here I used pinking shears to cut strips of shingles and staggered them (I printed the pattern on card and used it for sheathing and to roughly align the rows)
For a rougher (and more proper Bree look) here I cut what seemed like millions of individual shingles and staggered them up and down
i think i need to do that flat card step too... there is only so much RL housebuilding you can transfer to this scale...
and that size of the shingles is probably way smaller than i would have tried...therefore i think instantly qualifes as the right size......i will do this exactly that way!
checked it... and i still rememeber that last pic... that is precisly that i am aiming for... that random look...tho i see ways how to get the other methods done too... i have recently got me these shears too... so the round ones are dooable too... but too neat looking when done for what i am envisioning...and that wild west building is eventually something i will try on a new building...
Np Vik...You probably don't see a lot of Wooden, gable-roofed buildings in Berlin do you? I see them so much, I'm always happy to go to the older parts of towns and gawk at the brick buildings myself.
oh... brick work you see in berlin quite often... even though the war has ruined many houses to the ground there is a fair amount still standing from around a hundred years and even older buildings...a miracle really...
but wooden roofed ones... i can´t recall one at all... i think these you get more commonly in sweden than in germany... we have the burnt loam tiles you porbably see everywhere on the globe...sometimes really artful tho... my father in law told me these were called beavertails...because of the shape...
I read that some construction/excavation there in Germany just dug up an unexploded bomb from WW2 and it killed the construction driver. That was a sad story. If we could spend half of the money on life as we do on death, imagine what we could all have!
Occasionally, you see clay roof tiles, but most of the clay around here got cooked into brick. Asphalt was apparently cheaper, I dunno.
in fact that was a mighty stirr in the day life of berlin... i have seen the wreck of that bulldozer...and it must´ve killed him instantly...the whole city felt the aftermath of that and not the last word is spoken in that poor affair... it seems that usually when you dig some basement the ground needs to be scanned first here in berlin due to the sheer amount of not exploded shells still in the deepest levels of the ground here... the story goes that the initiator for that housebuilding choose not to scan the ground as building orders regulate... instead he just ordered the digging...
and yep... that is a troublesome thing that is so weird...
also... the amount of time spent as a kid...or as a working human is rivaled by the time you spent nowadays as an old grunt... really our lives are full of such paradoxes...
I hope the guy who made that decision gets planted under the foundation. No need for execution. Just build the house on top of him. I like the tiles your going for vik, good choice.
I dont think I had seen the bree building before Dave. Very nice.
We found an old nazi vault on our airfield while I was stationed in germany. I had two empty safes and one filled with vials of 45 yr old nitroglycerin. That was a fun day.....
Yes Theo, and that is where we get bridges, parks and sidewalks and traffic lights and everything else that makes modern life livable. This myth that only private businesses have a divine right to make money is seriously scary. Municipalities don't generally pocket that money, they put it back into the community and that is where cities come from.
I'd like to see ONE major US City switch over to a "Libertarian" Tax-free way, and then take bets on how long before the roads rot away and people leave in a mass-exodus before they scramble to go back. At least then the ridiculous idea will go away.
Thanks Max, I did a whole set of Those buildings as well as a set of Stalingrad ruins in 1/72 (15 mm) scale
best not to ask that question... regarding life and the shedding of it back in those days the germans have been experts in this...
and just to try this idea of yours...it would seriously affect peeps too...loss of life...way too many...
one of my favourite economics is John Maynard Keynes...
http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Maynard_Keynes
he precisely said that in time of recession the state has to do the activating of the economy....with lots of new contracts like making streets and building infrastructures...
also... like many libertarians use to say in the end the market will heal itself...Keynes saying towards this is:
in the end we are all dead...
but will those dumb and mighty ever shut up and listen?...fat chance...
absolutely true Vik! Classical Tophat-and-monacle Economics could not explain the Great Depression, that is what made Keynes so relevant! Modern idiots try to re-write history and convince people that The New Deal projects were all failures, which is exactly what the Nazi party did with your own history in Germany at the time.
-Yeah, that's right..strutting my Economics minor here
Dave all you have to do is look at Detroit Michigan.......wait they didn't switch, but everything else on your list is there . I understand where that comes from but one thing they've done here I. Saint louis is to require an expansion tank on hot water heaters, and a permit to install a expansion tank. When I was at lowes it increased the cost of a hot water install by at least $100.00 on the smallest heater , people started doing their own installs, or getting chuck in a truck to do it to avoid the charges. Which is exactly what happened with the above situation I believe. Someone saw a way around spending a good chunk of cash and did I it, but this time it literally blew up in their faces. I had a customer get a neighbor to do his water heater instead of the install, three days later he came back in to do the install, but we couldn't do it then because the neighbor had flooded the basement and caused structural damage. Should have ponied up the $$$ to get it done right the first time.
Detroit and Gary, Indiana are now both wastelands because of the Steel and Automotive Industries that used to thrive there. Pittsburgh and Cleveland are also part of the same rust belt, but those cities had the sense and the people to invest in some diversification and most importantly to invest in the cities, rather than take their money and leave ruins behind them. The party of "personal responsibility" doesn't seem to think that same thing applies to their corporate payola donors...It's a double standard and the worst kind of hypocrisy that even a small child can see. Only adults who are afraid to think for themselves swallow the kool-aid without the common sense to at least add vodka to it first.
Surely, there must have been a reason for the water-heater fiasco? was the mayor or someone else in cahoots with a big HVAC company or something? Usually those types of ordinances are repayment for campaign donations.
Nobody likes the boss. My favourite answer to most of these kinda questions. we all moan about the costs of living in our world, but to be honest there is probably not a better way around it.
Feel for the worker, always some numpty trying to cut corners.
And I would like to go on record as saying "told you so" to Vik, said on your thread best ask Dave about roofing. I can come build you a real roof but thats not going to help. Trust in the master.
Break time
The whole water heater thing was just saint louis city forcing it on the locals to earn more $$$. Only certain types needed them, but it would be too hard to enforce, so instead they make everyone pay for it, unless you replace it yourself. Any licensed plumber had to charge the fee and get a permit, or risk losing the lisence.
You guys are a bunch of saps. I think I leaf the puns to you guys.
Since we're talking Gandalf, we spent the morning out as a family and after breakfast stopped by the humane society to LOOK at pets. I have been pet free for a few years and very happy about it, but when I saw a little dog that was so cute I almost gave in, especially because his name was Gandalf . But I am happily pet free still, except for the three furry ankle biters that keep calling me daddy.
I love pets, I just love other people's pets more , no shedding, dander, wet spots on the floor, and no land mines in the house or yard to try and avoid/remove.
exactly...I am with you all the way here^^... I love playing with dogs of friends...but wouldn´t want to have dog hair in my home for the love of the gods....dunno if I mentioned it...but I can´t smell... so I don't know where for instance a cat might have peed... and I had a cat for some time once... my sis then sometime too late told me that my small apartment reeked....
I have both unfortunately, Kids are more expensive, that's about the only difference. They both mess everywhere, eat you out of house and home, break EVERYTHING, chew what they don't break, and generally make a noise, actually that list could include the wife!
You need to play games man , its what gets me stoked again.....then again I've been in dulldrums recently too. But the KOW games have me painting fantasy models again.
Hey, Dave, wondering what it would cost to have you paint one for me?
I know you already said that if I send one you will paint it and return it. I believe you meant at no cost just because it would be fun to do but what would be the monetary cost to you for the paint and supplies necessary to paint one of these?
Just wondering.....

Me too man! I've actually entertained the thought more than once of just getting rid of all my crap. I haven't yet, but I've thought about it. I have an obscene amount of unbuilt kits and such. I'm a sick hobby hoarder I think. Admitting that doesn't make me feel better either
^ Sometimes I need to do that! I end up thinking about how long it will take to do then I add the new stuff I will buy and it seems impossible, then i start not enjoying it so i sell/give away armies and models until I'm back on track!
My friend Brother Paen is that way. He sees good deals on undles of sprues and partial kits at the Warseer or on Ebay and buys bunches. He does a bunch of conversions but still has stuff filling box after box. I collect trinkets that I see have use for scratching and it has built up. If there are toys going to the trash I take em apart for usable pieces. I have a gallon zip lock bag of McDonalds milk jug lids..... Those are cool. I see dozens of good uses for them but keep building Warhounds and can't get to those other cool projects. I have doller store toys and party trinkets and a stack of Polystyrenes sheets almost a foot thick.
We are addicted to plastic, ya'll....
Get used to it....
Accept it and most of all: Enjoy it....
I believe the kids today are fond of saying - YOLO......
These things have a habit of going in cycles. You'll reach a point where you think you've pushed as far as you can go, or you don't seem to be doing anything new, or some other reason, and you loose enthusiasm.
You may find something else that grips you for a while (that's why I have so many hobbies) but at some point you'll see or find something from an earlier hobby and it'll spark that enthusiasm off again and the cycle starts again.
Don't feel down Dave. Just find something that you enjoy, We'll be here when you get your mojo back.
my wife would love me to sell some stuff of my own...built or unbuilt ...but honestly... I can´t part with anything for real...
I think dave your problem is still your joblife...once that is "cured"...than everything falls into place again as we still fondly remember our true dave used to be... until then I hope you can still hold your breath...you stated that there are some "interviews" bound to happen in the future... be sure that I cross my fingers for that to be at least one positive outcome!

that would be a shame (probably, but I have no idea how much of an accumulation there is.) Well if you need a push what would it take?

I have thought the same as of late what if I just sell it all of but then I know I would regret it, I have done it before and regretted it moments later but I do need to curve my obsessive buying
To be honest Dave you will get it back plus this time of year and the way life is does not help in anyway, plus where would we go for inspiration and techniques
Look at us all we are just hoarders it's the way of life for us plastic crap is a must.
Yes I must tidy my room its on my list for this weekend thanks Dr H mum
Same here. I've got models in various states of completion on my desk, bookshelves, and dresser. If I don't get them reorganized soon, they might occupy Czechoslovakia.
Vik, is however, completely right. It's a subconscious Maslow's pyramid thing for me. When you are a professional at something for 16 years and then suddenly, you aren't for awhile, I guess that's the way it goes. Jobs I applied for last year are now finally calling. Hopefully, something will pan out soon. I have another interview tomorrow.
Good luck on the job hunt. You'll be re-employed and missing all the modeling time you had soon enough. Stuck behind a desk wishing you could be playing fallout as the boss drools on and on about reports and his greatness
This is the great electronic Bar Dave, we all hang out and chat and have a drink, we're just on every side of the globe so you just pop out for a while and do what need to be done and we'll all still be kicking back playing darts :-)
I also want to wish you all the best with your interviews and job hunt! something will be perfect for you and you'll be happy! you're too nice of a guy to not have good karma! plus sometime this year you'll get a nice AC/DC album :-) when i work out how to post it safely!
Thanks guys! @Nerdy, they still make LP mailers, but if you sandwich it between two sheets of heavy cardboard and fill the air space with bubble wrap or those air pillow things, it should travel nicely. Let me know the shipping cost, I cna paypal you to cover it!
i am recently in lurking mode...but this news report made me resurface...even if I slightly get comatose afterwards
I wish you all the luck and keep your backbone in your upcoming interview mate! don´t let the past days get to you in the interview...they smell how long you´ve been away from duty and this will make them think you´re easy prey!
again...I wish you all the luck...I will have tomorrow a very uneasy day then thanks to you because I have to sit on my fingers crossed...(is a special way for me to cross my fingers...you can´t help peeps with their own special way of superstition )

What Ldd said. also as a kind of flashback... Last week I was polishing flanges as part of a service project at my church. (cleaning day, I was cleaning a boiler room)
Well...I think that went well! It's a small plant that makes most of the Valve Seals for Engines. It's affiliated with the Dana corporation, but independent. I would be "The IT guy" so I'd get to do a lot of different things, which is ideal for me.
On a second front, There may still be a chance to work for my old company on a new Nationwide contract, repairing the POS systems for all the Wal-Marts in the Country! I'd be responsible for all the stores within a 30 mile radius and have 6-7 techs work for me, but apparently the pilot in Orlando, FL isn't going so well..
Then I just got a call about a simple Help Desk job at my Local Cable/Internet company, simple work, but it pays pretty well. We shall see!
No offers yet, but I feel better about myself today than I have in months.
Whatever you guys are doing (like sitting on your crossed fingers) please keep doing it!
This is all stuff that I applied for before the holidays, apparently everyone was waiting until after the New Year to interview!
The flu is really epic right now, so they were probably visiting me . With how retail works that POS repair that isn't working right will probably be fully launched nationwide.
Good luck dave. Prayers are happening for you to find the right job for your unique talents.
i will definitely keep sitting for you on my crossed fingers... unfortunately I only have two hands...thus my luck wishing capacities are limited...which still at least hopefully will make you able to choose later on between at least two options...
I wouldn´t even dare to help you in the choosing...totally not my department the whole IT scene...
I have recently been through similar experiences and I have to say dude, don't worry it comes good, you are a good guy and it will come good for you in the end honest.
Apparently, the Wal-Mart gig is full of all sorts of Fubars. Can't get parts, employees hiding the hand scanners, etc. etc. It's a real mess. The Automotive gig is the one most exciting me right now. No contract BS either, however it is a 30+ minute drive, that's the only downside.
Yeah..but for the first time in my life, I'm beyond needing the job just for the income. No kids, no real debt anymore. I already busted my ass over the past 16 years to fix all that. At this point I want to enjoy going to work every day, making a difference you know? Really getting into my work. There are only two things I hate..People who are intolerant of other cultures..and THE SWISS! - seriously, there is nothing more infuriating that working for the arrogant Swiss. They hide Nazi Gold as well as their contempt behind their gakky English accents
Automatically Appended Next Post: btw..My apologies to any Swiss readers..this is a long-running joke here, I'm sure you aren't ALL this way
I reject and outwardly mock any and all caste systems. And the Swiss have feudalism engrained into their modern day workforce. They especially don't like Americans telling them how to use Technology that was designed by Americans. They REALLY get upset when an American woman tells them what is up, and I've worked with some of the smartest women ever. lady geek is one such. I see no color, creed, or sex when it comes to getting work done, but some people can't let go of old ideas. Naturally I clash with personalities like that and consider myself an agent of change, since change is the only constant force in the universe. And silly little knives too!
dsteingass wrote: I've got a chunk of German smoked Gouda in there. That's proper cheese. And I've had Swiss chocolate, it's not all that really.
Oh Dave, you had to go with smoked Gouda as a counter,,,,,,,,,,,,,I happen to love smoked Gouda and buy it whenever I get the chance, have a block of it in my fridge. Well, part of a block, heheheh!
dsteingass wrote:I've got a chunk of German smoked Gouda in there. That's proper cheese. And I've had Swiss chocolate, it's not all that really.
I hate to put a nono on this one...gouda is in fact from the dutch...
also... as a food retailer (learned) I advise you all to eat fresh cheese...not cooked or smelted or restructurated cheese...please?
weird....but I guess my fellow countrymen produce lots of stuff... names these days mean nothing anymore...
personally I like cheese that is mature...old gouda, or any other mature cheese that peeps otherwise would not eat because of the smell...(remember I can´t smell? ) appenzeller...or gorgonzola...(two completely different cheeses at all...but range pretty high on the tangy scale^^)
That would be a blessing there VIk. I too love the taste of stinky cheeses (except Swiss) but the smell turns me off. ALways wanted to try Gorgonzola. Moldy goodness. Eating all that penicillin can't be bad for you
LOL...try that on a very good piece of bread... dark or white bread...whichever you prefer...and for further tastyness...thick spread butter underneath... fat...now fat is our friend wherever taste is concerned
as for the smell...well...you´re talking colors with a blind man here^^...
I have a very good sense of smell, and love the aroma of ripened cheeses. If I find a good cheese shop that reeks, I know it is quality, if it is sterile of aromas, walk out!
That sucks Max, you miss a lot of fun.
Cork chunks, different sands from the fake floral/decorating department. Railroad ballast and Those little rectangular punch-outs from laser-cut mdf Infinity buildings for bricks.

SM would also be a nice grab
Failcast , never going to happen for me. Was going to build a dark eldar army awhile back, but the characters were made of that junk and all the ones at the shop were gak.
I've got to do another eBay clear out soon as well. Good luck on the bids .
@vik, the challenge was to build something from plastic cards, cardboard or other stuff to look like cheese, so hopefully it won't smell bad. Although I do have some GW paint that smells like old cheese that's been getting a suntan for far too long.
I think there's some bandwagoning going on with the finecast subject personally, but I suppose it's understandable. GW always seems to rub everyone raw in one way or another.
Well GW is dropping finecast as a product supposedly, so there's more than just bandwagoning , but I'm sure there is some too. I dislike bandwagoning, its no that I fall off so much, its that I get pushed off more often than not
It is a bit soft, compared to plastic or resin. Swords and little bits seems fragile. I'm still a fan of metal myself though for character models, but plastic is easiest for conversions.
Games always seemed more civil back in the day of metal models too. Not sure if it was because we were tired from carrying the armies around, or more worried that our opponents might chuck a metal dreadnought at our heads I we were unsportsmanlike
Well, because when you took the time to paint your army, you were more invested in it, rather than just gluing together a mathematical plastic army for winning...

Tell Eggroll to PM me if he's interested.
These are some great kits, but strangely, there are only enough shoulder-socket-covering bitz for one? I had to make some, no big deal.
@Vik- I was thinking the opposite. I was thinking how easy it would be to scratchbuild different arms for the kit ala some of Gitz fantastic Mekwork he's done.
Yay good to see you back into it Dave! :-) the Kans are surging ahead in nary a day so it seems! looking forward to seeing you weather the crap outta them, so i can copy and use it for Gits lol! and remember if you EVER need your Paypal acc stuffing and you find some Marine models just PM me and I'm pretty sure I'll take whatever you have :-)

and i'm jealous of that guy! he's GOT a N64 :-( I so want one so i can re live playing Perfect dark again..... I still wonder what the levels of deadly went up to?
Either he has, based on the size of what is under the towel a stash of certain movies not safe for work, or he has an old machine that would be kind of embarassing to still have.
I really think it went well. I was there almost two hours. The plant manager gave me a tour of the place. He used the "overqualified" word but then took it back, saying that wasn't the right word. At this place I could get my hands into all sorts of new stuff I've never had a chance to work with before, but he said he felt I could handle the job as-is without issue. Like I said, this is a new position being created, so it'll be built around the person rather than filling someone else's shoes. That's a pretty big deal to me. I'd be able to branch out into the production systems, so there would always be something new and fresh to do. he plant is only 15 years old, so they already have substantial technology in place. Systems that take high speed digital pictures of every part being produced for QC..Just like you see on those factory shows on TV.
The only thing that happened that could be considered "iffy" is that when I was done with the tour, I went back to the conference room to get my coat and notebook and the next interview candidate was already sitting in the room. Poor form to let two candidates cross paths IMHO, but oh well.
Well, I got a call from the local Cable co. They are ready to give me an offer as soon as they get someone else promoted up. So it's something anyways! It's my 2nd choice though. The Valve Seal place is my first choice, but I haven't heard back yet. So within a few weeks I'll at least be back to work either way! The pros of the Cable Co. are: close to home, short drive Cons are: 6 weeks days, 6 weeks nights rotating shifts. Pay is not great, but not bad either.
I hate rotating shifts trying to adapt to times is awful but at least its work mate maybe something else will come up later but in the mean time it's a wage.
It's 12 hours, 3 days a week, then a 4 hour shift. I'm not crazy about it, but thankfully it leaves a few weeks for the other offer to come in (or not) to decide.
Sounds like a good deal for now as long as you don't start wearing plaid nd start screaming "Git er done!", though blue coveralls could be a problem as well
No no no, not a call center. Internal level 2-more of a systems monitoring and maintenance gig no outside customers and all that. But yeah, weekends and holidays are part of the deal.
well....be sure that I cross my fingers only for the best of your wishes...whatever that might be...(deep down you know which job you really want )
and theo... I think we have to tread carefully now... lest this turns into a tentacle manga thread......(tho I think I cool terrain piece made only from the named parts would be a brilliant thing...)
