That is right lads, we are back! This round I thought why not start off fending off another silly heretical apocalypse with our finest, and mightiest? That is right! this is the Hero round. The goal of this is to make a hero model, who... well, has to be a hero of your army for some reason. This is a great way to get those head quarters done, and yeah! Why not? oh and a Wip and a Finished shot is all we want an need Rules and Doo Dads Model must be a 1 figure entry - standing over dying corpses and the such is fine Model must be painted - even if you are not the best gold deamon status painter - this category is only a mild scale tipper Painting as follows -will be judge be effort which includes, but is not limited too: Basing is also a requirement and a hero really cant be complete, unless he is based anyways so i don't see the problem at all here. Main judging will be done based on the rule of cool Any questions? Please post, quick responses by Papa and I are to follow, if you want to ask a more personal question PM me and or Papa nid. Prizes? oh...those silly things.. Yeah guys there is gonna be prizes, but honestly i am only doing this to make you compete among each other for greatest dakka hero.. nothing big. Just one of the most fantastic titles ever awarded over any of our competitors. Did i mention their will be a trophy? There is going to be a trophy! Now get to it! ROUND 3 . . . FIGHT!!!!! thing is, I've not been into 40k for about 3 months now, and I doubt I'll properly get into it again for another year- at the moment, I'm all about lord of the rings, which has two classifications- basic troops and heroes, and I have all the heroes I need.
So yeah, it depends if I think of anything specific (and/or get round to doing it ) to do for it.

never really appealed to me- the style's a bit too... I dunno, unrealistic? I know what I mean
plus, I never liked armies which you control in blocks- if there's a 1-man wide doorway that needs defending, I don't want 20 men sitting around there when two guys could be doing the same job.

Post by: AnUnearthlyChilde
Warhammer doesnt exactly work that way you know
10470
Post by: shrike
yeah, but it's the whole look of it- lord of the rings and 40k look more realistic because they're not travelling in blocks, but as individuals. It also offers more of an opportunity for converting, because in fantasy, you have to consider that your model's going to need to fit in base to base contact with four different people around it ^^

Ack no no no lols... sorry don't agree. WHFB harks back to ancient times when infantry fought as blocks, like the Romans, Egyptians, Babylonians, Greeks, Celts, Vikings, Normans etc etc etc
there is strength in numbers and fighting as a cohesive block of infantry. I think you see it with modern eyes, where modern warfare dictates individualism as a unit.
but anywho... FIND SOMETHING TO PAINT... ITS AN ORDER

No, elements of their forces did... considering the Viking Capitol of Britain is just down the road from me, I think I know
whats the point of the Viking army skirmishing against block troops? it would barely make a dint. Their tactics were hit and run with the units of skirmishers to distract against the block hammer of their armies strike. Automatically Appended Next Post: also, every military force in the ancient world used skirmish techniques in one form or another, but, primarily they used block walls of troops, the most common during Viking times was the shieldwall, the interlocking of shields to form a rigid defence... something you can't do when running about in skirmish formation

Post by: Skalk Bloodaxe
Yeah, but it doesn't count if no one comes. The only reason I'm a DCM is because I want to literally support Dakka, I really like this place. Other than that there's no particular reason I'd recommend DCM to anyone. There is a DCM 'special area' but IMO it's a bit boring there. It's way more fun to hang out in the P&M section with the cool kids. P&M forever!
Anyway, here's where my project is at:

Hiya people,
you guys still taking participants? If so, I'd like to enter this gentleman here:
My Chaos Lord, Lord Captain Lorimar, of the World Eaters' 4th assault company.
The model was built in late December and early January. Didn't see any paint yet, though.
Having him in the competition would be an excellent way of forcing myself to paint him in a timely fashion...

at kraut... awesome model... Ã feel taken down a peg... darn...
at maus... wow...the mask looks super! no pun inteded!... i am a bit unsure of the "A" though... looks too sausage like atm...but the maks is compensating for that completly!
also...from my part...
there is a hero... at least one half of him...(i will not glue his boltpistol wielding arm for now... this will get glued on after paint has happened... otherwise the paintjob will be more a pain(t) job... too much covered areas then... so i will paint this one later on unassembled...or rather part assembled...
here are the pics...
added cogteeth to the rim of the shiled... do you think these are undue? i am not too sure about them...also i added a new piece of heraldry to the shiled... it is a cross between wings and a "v"... what do you think?
i am open to ideas and critizism... fire away!
cheers, vik

Ah, my plan was to turn him into a terminator lord on the precipice of ascension, 'cuz I need a lord for my CSM army too. I think he's too small to be a DP, but I suppose my friends would allow me to play as it as a counts-as! I'm still wondering how I can show that he's on the edge of ascension with the bits I currently have. Hmm..
Viktor von Domm wrote:^that! and be proud for that sculpt know no pear!!!

So, if you're still taking entrants (and it seems you are) I'd like to give this a shot. Last time I entered a competition I had to bow out so hopefully this will help erase that shame.
Presenting Pustulus Maximus (kudos if you get the reference), champion of Nurgle:
He's the guy on the left...
Still very much a WIP. Lots of sculpting left to do then the painting (which is the daunting part for me...) He is blu-tacked together here.
If it is too late, or if this doesn't qualify for some reason, please let me know and I will remove the images from this post.
Either way, I look forward to seeing the completed entries!

This seems like a good way to force me to finish one of my bigger models...
Its a bit of a tangent from the "Hero" theme, a "Hive Tyrant"
Looted of course
I have 2 looted fexes already, which I use as Deff Dreads in Ork games, and a friend of mine suggested that I start a Tyranid army, but have everything "looted" in a sense.
Then I got a Tyrant from another friend (rather broken, and with two left feet), and set to fixing it! Now it is setting up to be a centerpiece of both my Ork and Nid armies, as a "Boss" Dread and Tyrant, respectively.
Hopefully this can be considered suitably Heroic. If not, just lemme know and Ill change models!

After many hours of frustration, I modeled the gosh-darn-hard-to-make-look-decent-without-ripping-your-hair-out crisis suit. While it's a good pose, I feel like something is missing to give it that "heroic" flair. (Besides walking over the broken hull of his enemy that was previously a leman russ battle tank.)

I had planned to post WiPs before primer, but alas, those are now lost to the warp >< Hopefully Thats not too big of an issue- sorry guys :/
These pictures show the finished skin color, and the start of the carapace. Also, MUCH more looting.
A close up of the head, featuring some power gubbins I found in my bitz box.
The arms, including a pair of Orky Boneswords/scything talons. This guy will be close combat all the way! (unpictured is a more bionic-style CCW arm)

Just wanted to gt people's opinions, I'm planning on adding a khorne icon/trophy rack to by entry and can't decide which one, what do you guys think?
Also I really like where the looted hive tyrant it going, the warrior head on he tail is a nice touch
15297
Post by: Ramos Asura
Personally, Id go with the first one. I think it looks more impressive, plus SM helms I think make better trophies. Can bring more color to your model as well!
And thanks for the complement on the Tyrant- The Warrior head is on there because I wasnt given a tail for him- so I built one! Part of one of the guns for the tail, then the head as the ridge at the end of it. Shortly after doing all that my friend walks up to me with the actual tail in his hands. Seems he just found it

i think the necron head is a bit useless... i don´t think necrons could be scared by using one of their own slain...tho the KG head is a suitable trophy if there ever was one... also the tau head! i bet they wet their pants sooner than they thought^^
and...
the hero... captain victory...
note... there is no blue in the scheme for this captain... i know it rather makes this captian look like a UK version of the US Agent... but since queen victoria the great is still after 40 millenia in deep mourning over her late husband... and his favorite color was blue... all blue was banished from usage for the whole empire... so cap looks like this... the model is by the way pre wash... so may the lords help me for the next steps...

The Necron trophy on a Champion's rack isn't to strike fear into the 'hearts' of Necrons, it's to show all his buddies that he kicked Necron butt.
There is a UK version of Captain America. His name is... how so very original... Union Jack. Spoiler because the pic is huge and I didn't want to junk up the thread.
No update to share, buried on my Terrain project this weekend, I'll be back w/ more Hero stuff later.

Amazingly, I'm pretty much done with my hero (and base). Have some finishing touches to do which I'll aim to complete tomorrow when there's some daylight (hopefully), although rain is forecast...
Once this is done I'll take some final photos to go with the WIPs - have a pop-up lightbox that will finally see some use, rather than the usual green cutting mat background

My post was generally ignored, so I'll quote it to bring it here, together with a query.
Know No Pear wrote:
My finished model. It's taken a couple of days that I shouldn't have spent on it, but I suppose it was worth it. I really don't have anymore time to spare, I hope you like it. More images in my gallery (front, side, back). They're located here
This is the WIP
I hope you like it! I enjoyed building and painting it, and I suppose that's what matters the most.
And 'cuz of this...
cormadepanda wrote: inmygravenimage wrote:Quick query, for final shot do you want single image, series of pics, or a composite shot?
good question, i didnt really think about it. A single shot of a Wip, and Final and if you wanna do composite for all the angles that be great.
Will my quoted post be enough for a final submission since it directs you to my gallery for more pictures?

So, didn't get a chance to do anything today - broken toilet cistern took precedence, and constant rain scuppered any hopes of good daylight photos. As a teaser though, here's a pre-touched up image... Want to do some more on the banner and some tidying up of the armour. Possibly also some OSL on the power fist

@ Know no pear: I didn't respond to the images cuz i don't want to give my opponents even more of an edge, specially when they do a good job like that one...
@ Ruglud... nah... its done man Don't do OSL or the banner...
Seriously though... yeah, i think some OSL might do it... Maybe I should try some too... but never done that before, and really wouldn't even know where to begin...

@know no pear - nice, looks like he's enjoying him self in all that gore
@Maus - only some minor tweeks needed now... Problem I have with OSL is I've also never attempted it before. Having said that I experimented with NMM on the gold - pretty happy withthe results for a first time so maybe OSL is achievable?

So, I'm going to give a WIP shot, but I've got a bit of a problem. My model is very black with dark red highlights, and the dark-on-dark doesn't show up well on the picture (it does in person, though). I can never seem to get enough light with just the sun and my gopro. Any suggestions?

use a white back drop. If you dont provide a wip it wont be judged.

How about also trying a homemade lightbox, something like the pic in this link shows - just a cardboard box, some table lights and white paper / fabric

I'm afraid I spent today watching Rugby (Six Nations - great wins for England and Ireland), reorganising my various bitz boxes and then watching Dredd on DVD (awesome film BTW). Still need to do final touches and finsihed pics - but it will be done before the deadline... promise...

Painting has started! *Very* early PIP - just getting a feel for the layers of the model and colour scheme. Still more paint layers required for the basecoats, and tidy up of course. Will be painting "inside out". Good luck everyone - looks like the competition is going to be fierce! Don't envy the judges
