Does anyone have any insights, etc... on the game? I do know it is Alessio Cavatore, who I tend to appreciate very much as a designer, but i've heard little else about this one (other than it being 15mm).
When the Kickstarter goes live tomorrow, there will be multiple videos posted, including a gameplay one for you to see how the game is structured. We will be releasing loads more info as the Kickstarter progresses to keep you all in the loop.
We also have a great discussion taking place on the gameplay and other aspects over at our Alien Dungeon Forums on www.aliendungeon.com
I've been looking forward to this game for quite a while now. It will also be my first foray into 15mm gaming since DBA, and that's makes me doubly happy.
Edit: Its weird that the Early-Bird specials seems so faction specific. The wife and I were hoping there would be an obvious "sweet-spot" tier for two players to get started, somewhere between $150 and $250. I guess, All-Out-Assault is as close as that gets?
So correct me if I'm wrong, but to actually play the game with 2 factions it looks like you need to commit to the $260 level or higher? Am I reading that right?
cincydooley wrote: So correct me if I'm wrong, but to actually play the game with 2 factions it looks like you need to commit to the $260 level or higher? Am I reading that right?
Seems like. Very bizarre. A new game, out of the gates should ideally have some mid-tier way for two players to try the system out. Here it feels like you need to go all in, right out of the gates.
I like Alessio's games, which is why i'm here, and threw a quick $225 at this, but it is going to need to do a fair bit more to keep the wife and I from just throwing an extra $200 into Deadzone instead.
...Meh, count me out. tripod kits look ok though nowhere near as great as I thought and even at KS prices it's not all that cheap for a 15mm game. add to that figures will hardly see use outside of this specific game (Weird War One does that...) and the extremely high buy-in to even get any stretch goals and I'm out.
I'm tentatively in at Martian Pod Leader Full Assault Early Bird. The feel of this game is almost exactly right for me -- I love "retro" alien invasion scenarios but prefer the '50s. I've been watching the Martian tripods for a while now and they've been growing on me. I'm also getting into 15mm gaming and this seems like a good intro.
Price is a bit high, but as an HG Wells fan, there was no way I could pass this up. I'm also banking on the expansions to increase the amount of likely players, so I'll be able to find someone to actually play a game with.
I'm gonna need to buy some appropriate Army themed paints now...
Interested in this since I first saw it but the decent looking pledge levels are a bit steep for me, I do hope it does well and I'll probably look to get involved later.
They added a few "Early Bird" tiers, and the $245 one "Full Assault" is about as close as it seems I am going to get for a moderately sized two-player starter set. I've pledged, and still retain a whole lot of enthusiasm, but I will say that I feel like my pledge feels precarious, versus secure. It is going to take a lot of stretch-goal generosity, as $250 doesn't seems to stage a very impressively sized two player game right now. Considering the scale, and the price of some of the WWII 15mm proxies i've purchased over the years, i'm looking for 50% more models by Kickstarter end, before I feel really good about this one.
Edit: 70k stretch-goal. WOW... That is a pricey add-on. I would have thought they'd do a little more Kickstarter community building before they threw the expensive add-ons out there.
Wow... Someone on the Kickstarter just tried to convince me of the value of a sole $35 tank add-on.... by comparing it to a Dust Tactics/Warfare Heavy Walker...
.... which is probably 400% larger in size, and can be found for $24 anywhere on the internet.... and comes with two different options/profiles for the game.
Good to see the cult of early adoption is in full effect.
Sorry you aren't happy with the second stretch goal (the first was more freebies). We will be adding lots of great things as we go both paid and free.
As for the Tank for $35, it is a very large tank. I will have to find the exact dimensions, but it is easily the size of a Dust Medium Walker if not bigger.
Thanks to the people who helped fund this in less than 2 hours! We appreciate it greatly.
Automatically Appended Next Post: Also, here are the dimensions for the Flamethrower Tank add on:
Length (with trailer) is 8"
Width is 3"
Height is 4"
It's worth the cost for me, considering the other free stuff i get for joining pre-kickstarter... I'm quite happy to give you my wallet.
Just get the rules out and put the game out there, if that's what it takes... lets be honest, in 15mm scale, and with a theme as generic as WW1, there will be plenty of cheaper options to supplement my force if they turn out to really be that overpriced. Not to mention for people who already have 15mm ww2 terrain, you don't have to shell out for terrain and you can get model railroad scenery. It is far more attractive to me than lets say, dropzone commander.
Well, first off -- cheers for the $50k goal. Anything that sweetens the deal helps to also seal the deal. Because this really is shaping up to be an expensive game.
I'm hoping some of the Locked Items on my Full Assault pledge turn out to be Martian units. Without knowing their relative capabilities, even Full Assault seems to favor the US forces.
Here's the Add-On Menu thus far (with MSRP in parentheses):
Hardcover Rulebook (w/Digital Copy) ... $40 ($45)
+ US Forces +
Mark IV Monitor ... $28 ($35) 3x Mark III Tanks ... $27 ($33)
Dang, the kickstarter went live in the dead of night here. I'm in for Full Assault, which is expensive, but I suspect the value will go up as add-ons and bonuses appear.
watching the gaming video, i was surprised at how big those plastic tripods will be. and the mark IV tanks are a great model.
Although, now I have to say that seeing the 15mm sherman tank next to the troops, which are actually 18mm, I'd like to see how they compare with normal 15mm troops...
cincydooley wrote: Yeah, didn't expect them to be so large since, you know, 15mm.
Pretty cool though. Still not a great 2P entry point, but cool.
$80 for the starter box seems reasonable? They list MSRP at 100 bucks so 20% discount, and it will get a KS upgrade at some point, adding enough value that it'll be a better deal than online discounters.
cincydooley wrote: But can you have a ton of fun with that starter? 3 Martian walkers? Just doesn't seem terribly diverse
Hopefully they'll release the rules for us to peruse.
The slightly higher levels (170 early bird levels) seem like a good deal (basically starter + faction specific units) if you and a friend each pledge, then you can swap your starter units for each other's and have a rockin' force.
if the rules are such that 3 tripods vs humans can be an interesting game, it would not be bad at all. That's a challenge however to provide enough tactical choices to the martian besides move, shoot.
You know, for me one of the appealing things about 15mm games is that they're typically less expensive than their larger counterparts. This seems to be stretching that notion a touch!
cincydooley wrote: You know, for me one of the appealing things about 15mm games is that they're typically less expensive than their larger counterparts. This seems to be stretching that notion a touch!
Well, this is absolutely true. I was looking to this game as one of the first BIG 15mm Kickstarters, thinking it would be a crazy value laden game.
I think my confusion also stems at the fact that I, and many, many DakkaDakka posters shunned Dropzone Commander due to its price..... claiming $100 starters were crazy, etc... Meanwhile, this game is as pricey or moreso.
I don't think it's a good idea to associate scales with price ranges. In this case, AD seems to have used 15mm to create a strong contrast between hulking vehicles and swarming infantry. That's why it's kind of shocking at how big tripods actually are. Yes, it's a 15mm model but it's a 15mm model of a gigantic vehicle.

I can speak for only myself, but I didn't expect 15mm to be cheaper, only that a game with a 'starter' level be a bit more accessible.
Though I will agree, those tripods are massive, the 'massive' tanks feel, hmm, tonka?
gunslingerpro wrote: I can speak for only myself, but I didn't expect 15mm to be cheaper, only that a game with a 'starter' level be a bit more accessible.
Do you mean, cheaper? Or with different units? A different size game (skirmish?)?
I don't like the Goliath, it does look Tonka with those big wheels. But the Land Iron Clad looks awesome, are you kidding seeing a model like that on the tabletop, with all the little crewmen and sponsons? Frickin hardcore.
Also don't like the tanks with towers on them... but hey, that's what conversion is for. Those tripods are really the most awesome thing. You could do your own scenario with tripods vs. WW2 era if you want as well, since there's more figs...

Don't get me wrong: I think it looks INCREDIBLY cool and it makes me wish some of my core games (ahem 40k/Warmahordes) were in 15mm for bigger games.

I think I'm just having trouble rectifying the balance of the $80, $110, and $130 dollar sets. There doesn't seem to be a lot of rhyme or reason as to why one has a lot of human infantry, one has none, another has a lot of martian infantry etc etc.
I'd rather not go to such a high pledge level to get a good array of the available units etc for. I've backed a ton of kickstarters, but maybe I'm just not as skilled at pricing at this scale or the kickstarter pledge options.
gunslingerpro wrote: maybe I'm just not as skilled at pricing at this scale or the kickstarter pledge options
I really sympathize with that sentiment. I only have a few dozen 15mm models myself and never conceived of this take on 15mm, where you could have extraordinarily big units because the scale is quite small. It doesn't even really work to think of them as actually being 28mm because that leads to thinking of this game as skirmish-sized, which it most certainly is not. Perhaps what they need is a detailed example of play so we can see how powerful tripods and Mark IVs are in-game. The best analogy I can guess is that, you know how Apoc games of 40k still feel like 40k -- just with more stuff to push around? Well, maybe this game is the kind of scale Apoc seems to promise and not just a "big skirmish" as it were. Just a guess.
Also, I agree that this KS seems to encourage picking an army rather than (for example, with the Robotech KS), jumping in with both sides so that you can go in with a friend or have everything you need to introduce the game to your friends.
Anyway, there have been lots of cool developments today. They just upgraded the templates to plastic and upgraded the dice as well, not even for reaching a stretch goal. Now that to me indicates they were going to do that from the start but still, it's nice to see they realized that those would not make great stretch goals and I hope it means the stretch goals they will set will be more about the miniatures than the accessories.
AD also posted some cool insight into the background and where they want to go with the game:
This discussion came up in the Comment Section and some folks felt it would be best put out as an update so more people could see it.
The question was about alliances and what else will be coming out:
I'll try answering a few things at once. The UK, the US, Canada, and what's left of Australia are "in it together".
The Martians don't line up with anybody. They don't even understand the concept.
The Venusians aren't happy that Mars is going after earth and think they might be next so they are coming too. They will have allies on earth that switch around.
The Germans and French are together. They are up to ...something.
The Under dwellers are looking for food and loot and most likely will align with anyone that can support their ,,,err..needs.
So the Great Interplanetary War:
Part One, Book One- All Quiet on the Martian Front- Martians, Canadians, USA, and the British Expeditionary Force. Rules for ground combat, Land Iron clads, and more is the subject of THIS Kickstarter. NO ARMY BOOKS. Ever. Unless we do some free stuff.
Part Two , Book Two- The Guns of Venus- Rules for Venusians, Under Dwellers, Flying Machines, Germans, French and maybe a bit more. Maybe Japanese? NOT part of this Kickstarter but I'd like to show some of the models towards the end. NO ARMY BOOKS.
I've no interest in the game itself, but will be buying some plastic tripods when they become avaliable on their own so I can play some Alien Invasion games using other rules.
Beautiful, but my will is flagging... Dust already does a good job, for me personally, of capturing a sense of scale (IE models ranging from infantry to enormous!), and i'm seeing that even $200 invested into Dropzone Commander gets me a full 6x4 table of aesthetically acceptable terrain, plus the rules, and two moderate starter factions... while my $260 Martian Front pledge leaves me wanting, and still needing to invest in terrain, etc, as i'm new to the scale.
I wish them well though. Alessio can do little wrong in my eyes so i'm sure this game will be good.
That one tank screams to be a Leman Russ in 15mm.
That and the tripods they've shown (which rival/beat outright anything else I've been able to find on the net) are super well done.
The terrain bits are kind of...
The Martian cylinder could be easily done for about $4-$5 using some PVC pipe. The laser wire and 'power node' also doesn't require a ton of modeling skill to make very cheaply and just about as nice-looking.
Hopefully, they'll focus on models and less on the terrain bits that are more readily available/do-able by players. Just my .02
Invasion, Deluxe Invasion, or Battle of Memphis are all equal points. $80, $110, $130. Pick your flavor!
I'm surprised no one is commenting on the US Army preview document they released. Including design notes from Rick Priestly. I gotta say it looks really cool and got me more excited.

Hey I was reading them!
After looking the packs over again, I suppose they are even. I guess my brain refuses to believe in looking at the "lower end" of packages. I'm just so tuned in to looking for the sweet spot for freebies/add-ons that I skip right into the $200+ stuff.

I've been a huge fan of 'War of the Worlds' since I heard Jeff Wayne's Musical Version of the story. For that reason alone I would buy into the Kickstarter, but add in the fact that the models fascinate me and that Alien Dungeon has already hit a home run for me with 'Fanticide', and I cannot resist. I know they've been tweaking the game through playtesting, which is probably why the Game Play videos and Rules haven't shown up in videos and such yet. Though I understand why people want to see those things before investing a bit in the game, my philosophy is, by investing in the game, I give them time and resources to hone what they've got into bigger and better product Call it faith, but I believe in Ernie Baker, Alessio Cavatore, and Rick Priestley, and in Alien Dungeon. The thought that my little pledge could help make this game the huge success I expect it will be by December excites and thrills me To me, Kickstarter is about making dreams into reality, not just the models into plastic, but ideas into well crafted rules. It takes time and money to produce a good ruleset.

I know this crew won't let us down

True, not to mention an enthusiastic community that plays the game and provides feedback to the creators. Balance issues can ultimately only be solved when the public itself gets access to the game. Having a beta-version batrep would increase participation though, doesn't matter much to me, but if we are talking a large investment here, it may be necessary for a lot of folks to see some concrete gameplay.
However, you don't need to see the rules for this game to appreciate the models... there are many 15mm rulesets out there and many have rules for tripods, and the tanks also have many uses, people can always use the ruleset they like the most... lets face it everyone has their own style.
I'm kind of impressed how in 3 days AD has managed to get me to go from $80 to $130 to $260. The multiple pledge-tier stretch goals at the same time is pretty slick and hopefully once this hits 125K and people realize just how much extra gets thrown in at the $260 and higher levels, this KS explodes.
judgedoug wrote: Yeah, there's a ton of freebies awaiting the higher funding levels. The presentation leaves a bit to be desired though, as it is confusing.
Yea, I've been looking at the $260 as it will be a ton of stuff. However the presentation of exactly what you gain isn't too clear. Mostly in the "all unlock from X level" part where if you are at that level, you have to choose between A or B. Does that mean at $260 I still have to choose A or B as if I pledged at a lower level, or do I get both A and B from that level? It's a good amount of stuff though.
ADs comments in update 22 are pretty clear it's both rather than a choice for the upper pledges. What seems to be confusing things is as soon as the question is answered and put to rest someone else asks again, creating more confusion. Hopefully they'll clarify the graphics a bit in the morning.
AD has just re-done their pledge levels to clear things up.
I think this is one that's just going to keep looking better and better as it goes on. They're working on a batrep video right now. And the more pledges that come in, the more awesome free items will be available.
So it's just either/or on that one, then, based on that update? I'm not following closely enough to really know.
As of this moment, though, I would say this campaign reminds me of some that baffle me a bit, and I think is a Kickstarter phenomenon. It has doubled it's funding goal, it's ALREADY successful, but folks really want it to go higher.
Sometimes, I think it is better for campaigns not to get too high... it becomes a bigger and bigger challenge to follow through the more money that is brought in and freebies that are given away.
If you had told me before this launched that it would END at 100K, I would have thought that to be incredibly successful. With it over 100K now, I think it is a success, and doesn't need to skyrocket (and likely won't, with the progress today and the usual slowdown in the middle of these things).
If it passes 200K by the end, that will be great, but it doesn't need to go up a dime more to have been a big success, imo.
From the force disposition pic, These are dark days indeed, I say. the US is in Mexico, Canada is in the US, Britian is in the caribean, and some bloody way or other, Germany and France have been teleported to south america! ….and HOLY MOTHER OF GOD, WHAT IS THAT THING COMING FROM VENUS!? P…p….PURGE. BURN. anyways, I'm happy to see this suceed, as I love wierd wars in 15mm, and along with my monsters from Fantasy Flight, I can see this turning into a "Humanity VS absolutley everything setting" Bring on the Retro Grim Dark. The Day that ClockWorks Goblins Incoming Werewolves and Nighthaunters are fighting Martians, I will be a happy man
It reminds me a bit of Dreamforge's Kickstarter with the way it's playing out. Good start; got a little confusing and stalled;, stretch goals properly adjusted and poised to move forward. I've noticed that the KS's where the owner is extremely flexible and involved tend to have a bit more trouble after the opening days. Striking a fine balance between generating excitement and trying to accommodating everyone seems to cause more than a few missteps. I'm glad AD has been able to pull it back together.
Yeah, recent update clarified everything. Just look at what you're pledging for and look at the chart and you get that free crap, haha. I'm really looking foward to this.
Triple9 wrote: I've noticed that the KS's where the owner is extremely flexible and involved tend to have a bit more trouble after the opening days. ... I'm glad AD has been able to pull it back together.
The owner Ernest Baker and the staff stand apart in the industry in an impressive way. Priestly and the rest of them have been doing this for decades, and are working purely from the heart now doing the games THEY want to make and play. It seems full creative and poetic licence at this point is their reward for years of service and answering to others.
On the Alien Dungeon forum the owner / creator Ernie regularly dialogues with members, offering anything from painting tips to assistance with rules. Almost unheard of these days.
If the rules and structure of Martian Front is as good as the system for their first game Fanticide (which is quiet different of course), we are in for a real fine ride.
I pledged $110 today, but may have to save some coffee money for the exclusive terrain piece as well.
I love the overall look of the figures, and have pledged in big time, with more waiting to go in as they put in some of the bigger items.
I think one of the things that stalled them at the start was that it is advertised as a 15mm game. While it is a 15mm (18mm game really) it also isn't...
The miniatures are HUGE! A 15mm tank that is 8" long!!! The tripods being 6" tall!!! Some of the other large items are even bigger!!! At 6" high each tripod is bigger than a 40k dread!
While rules are not out there yet, the crew creating them have a proven track record for games. Given that record, we can safely assume the game will work well from the start and given how much the Alien Dungeon crew has been interacting with the community so far it can only get better!
Please go take a look guys!
P.S. One thing I really love (a small thing admittedly, but one that bugs me to no end) is finally another game that doesn't just use D6's. Why oh why did we ever get stuck with such an odds-limiting die in most wargames. Here at least they are using a d10.
Messiah73 wrote: ...Why oh why did we ever get stuck with such an odds-limiting die [d6s] in most wargames....
Cheap because they're super mass marketed dice.
Lesser stigma because they're not those weird D&D dice (You kids aren't playing that devil game are you?!!!).
Easy to find replacments/additions to your dice to actually play a game without going to a specialty vendor; you can pick up d6s at many convenience stores.
We now return you to the thread about cool Martian Front stuff
Much like Warhammer 40K is "heroic" 28mm, this game is "heroic" 15mm. As has been stated, some of the vehicles are huge and you really need to see them in action:
Speaking of scale- here's a video AD just posted showing off some of the special units of the human forces, and gives you a nice comparison with a FOW Sherman tank:
I'm in on this KS at the On The Front level and have added more for add ons. This game has great minis, responsive owners and a great team of writers. I'm vey excited about this game and hope we can hit the higher levels.
We're still waiting on more rule sets but so far the game play vids look good and the early descriptions and abilities of the forces work well too. Bring on the Land Iron Clads - over 1 foot long! Huge!
Still no 'true-scale' 15mm fig in comparison. Such a shame... but as for the tanks and tripods, it just makes me want them more!
The rules are looking pretty cool too... a bit on the simplistic side but at least you can do bigger games with that, and I can still imagine it being a very tactical game. It will probably be more enjoyable than FoW's constant bailed-out vehicles. The damage chart on the tripods, can potentially introduce a lot of randomness to the game... anyone remember 5th ed 40k where you could shoot at a rhino all day, but never destroy it due to damage chart results?
But I think the D10 system might alleviate that, as long as each (or the great majority) of the damage results somehow lowers the martian's defense and makes it easier to kill somehow... I got that idea from the vid.
Backed this from the start and will eventually up my pledge further. Its nice to see a games company listening to their customers. Get in on the ground floor and help shape what will be a truly epic game.
Guys if you haven't looked at this game lately please do! The minis are great and the new stretch goals are filled with freebies to help your alliance. There are also better entry levels for those that don't want to spend as much to start. There are also 2 gaming videos with more coming.
They just posted one of the free unlocks at the $150K goal(which the KS is fast approaching): The "Red Martian" character tripod. They haven't previewed it yet, but unlocking at the same time is Patton's Monitor Tank for the human side.
Awesome stuff, and keeps looking better and better. Hope some more of you Dakkaites get onboard...I think it's going to be a lot of fun.
Though I'm more of a Fantasy/ swordnsorcery sort, I've totally fallen in love with this game project! Latest great announcement that I heard was the inclusion of characters/famous units. Rumor of the mighty Land Ironclad 'Thunderchild II' is afoot, and I'm definitely getting one!
We might even see Teddy Roosevelt's "Grizzly" Land Ironclad...

I'll admit... after a rough start, this Kickstarter is really improving, and slowly starting to tempt with more value.
I'm considering giving it $300-400, but it'll depend on goals, and, unfortunately, it and Deadzone alike have to compete for my money right now. Either would've been an easy $500 if they were running concurrently.
Automatically Appended Next Post: Incidentally, does On-the-Front, offer any added value over going "Full Assault" and just adding on pieces? Unless i'm missing something, they price out to be the exact same?
Is there a reason both pledges get identical stretch-goals? You'd think going say, $470 would get you more than going $260.

There are basically three tiers of stretch goal rewards. So, Full Assault, On the Front and All Out War all share the top tier rewards, they just get different amounts of stuff in their individual pledge levels.
Just did the math, and based on the Kickstarter Addon costs, you save an additional $34 by upgrading from Full Assault to On The Front.
By the way, AD just posted a preview for the Patton Mark IV Monitor tank, a stretch goal reward that unlocks at $150K:
Excuse me.... 10 inch gun???? How BIG is this model? :-p
Yes, I realize (assume) they're talking about barrel diameter. :-p
Still... these are supposed to be freebies for higher pledgers, yeah? (This and Red Martian)
Considering the extra goodies i'm going to get from pre-Kickstarter bonuses, etc... this really is starting to shape up for me. I think i'll probably just go "Full Assault" though, and cherry-pick another $100 or so of add-ons. I loath the assault-troops, and just don't want them. Somehow, the painter in me recoils at the notion of scraping little "hooks" against other painted models. :-p
This creator Q&A session has been absolutely amazing. I wish some... bigger... productions would have such open, and candid discussion on everything from value, to production, to rules, etc....
On the strength of this community interaction alone i've thrown in for $360... Good showing guys. I really, really hope this KS catches fire as I wish I could see the product we would all be getting come $500k, and upwards...
Incidentally, as a former cynic... I encourage others to check out the value proposition again. It has grown/improved CONSIDERABLY in the last week and a half.

Anyone remember those old War of the Worlds comics from Marvel? I've always loved Killraven.

Well, and more-so, some very nice, big models, and several smaller/infantry models as stretch-goals. By my estimation, higher pledges, all at once, are about to get another $40-60 or so in freebies.
Hey guys. AD just dropped a new surprise goal for us. If we can hi $150,000 by tomorrow night all INVASION levels and above get free Gubins. Free bitz on top of just announced decals for all actions already added! Check them out!
Well, I've got my nice Full Assault early birds but I suppose I could also use a Dominator Tripod. Good luck AD in breaking 150k, that's still a big leap.
Yes, upped to Full Assualt myself. Good value to begin with and with all the extra free stuff perfect for doing demos (though you could do a demo with the basic $80 invasion set easily enough).
I think they should start looking at storage/transport systems for the figures. Those tripods with tentacles and stuff are going to be a bitch to store and bring along.
Hey guys -- just a quick update -- we are less than $3900 away from the 150,000 level and tons of freebies! Free decals already set for all factions -- and the BONUS of free bits if we hit that goal by tonight! Please check by and pledge.
Yeah... I really wish I could do more to help encourage Dakka-members to give this one another hard look...
... seriously, I get it. Looking back on this very thread, I was amongst the harshest critics. That said, the project barely resembles its earliest days, and at higher levels, freebies are starting to equal paid content.
I'm currently in at On the Front (iirc... its the $360 level), and that plus freebies is already at a level which fields two HUGE armies. I'm very impressed. Likewise, the criticism of there being no good, cheaper two player entry level is gone thanks to some great mid-sized pledge levels which they added.
And heck... not that i'm endorsing this, but at the very least, their trenches/terrain bits look amazing, and are being re-scaled to fit Flames of War bases.... so at the least, fans of that game might get a lot of cool stuff if they threw $100 at a batch of those.
Yep... and $175k stands to be equally impressive. Once again, if we get there (which is safe to say, considering we did $30k in the last two days), upper-level pledges will again get another $30 or so in freebies.
Plus... there seem to be a LOT of stretch-goals left unannounced. If the pace is roughly similar, we should end up with tons and tons more in our pledges... PLUS, AD mentioned during their Q&A, that if we hit higher pledging over-all, more models could be done in hard-plastic, with the savings being passed on to backers.
Come on folks... Keep hyping this one. Its a bit of a battle against some of the heavier hitters who can throw more at their respective KS'ers, but man.... i've yet to see a company as responsive as AD to its fans.
Guess what? Earlier a story made the rounds that AD hated a model which was sent to them for approval. Know what they did? They REFUSED it, and sent it back for a full resculpt. Crazy response huh? ;-)
If we make 175K, which is looking highly probable, I'm going to be incredibly blown away with what we'll receive and this KS will rival any of the other generous companies. And as stated, their response and approachability is second to none.
Recently they made a mistake on model count for several pledge levels, only by a slight bit of wording and it's obviously a simple error that a responder noticed. Instead of retracting the statement and back-pedaling, they are honoring their initial offering and wording by adding in the extra non-intended models for free -- which are a generous amount of extra infantry stands.
and they are keeping it that way for new pledgers too. My crew and I are going to be gaming until dawn for days when this box hits our doorsteps.
more plastics for tanks and the like would be great. Friends of mine in the area are starting to jump in, and some of them are "one game guys" up until this point. I'm digging out and touching up my 15mm terrain next month, although I will have to pick up some of their really nice trenches. Good times.
@DrunkenBoxer, I'm pretty sure those won't ever be stretch-goal freebies. The campaign has been generous, but that would be an unprecedented degree of generous.
As it stands, on freebies, they're already at an average of about 47% msrp on return... which basically puts them at parity with Deadzone/Mantic. That is really impressive considering that AD is a much smaller company.
That said, they understand the importance of us, their first adopters being champions and stewards of the game, and as such are treating us very well.
IF IF IF, we hit $175k, and then $200k is as impressive with freebies as $150k was (or we hit the plastics upgrades and suddenly get way more for our buying dollar), then this reasonably could end as one of those 60-70% return-on-msrp Kickstarters that become legendary for their value.
Meanwhile, i've desperately got to figure out how to milk my pledge. I'm at $470, which is my two big armies, and the two GIANT add-ons... with no other add-ons. This means none of the extra trenches I wanted, no flame-tank.... and no room for the entire line of upcoming British forces.
@NewTruthNeomaxim - I hear you on the big investment....this is probably the most I've yet to spend on a Kickstarter. And not because I have to...I think there are plenty of people that could be very satisfied at one of the lower pledge levels. It's because I want to. So many cool models and scenery bits coming out!
For those that haven't seen it yet, here's some detail on the Mark IV Steam Tank:
I own a couple pieces from one of their kits, and it is surprisingly durable/attractive stuff. If anyone has seen the Dropzone Commander Cityscape.... this stuff is actually hardier, nicer material. Looks good and is quite functional.
They've got the license for making terrain for All Quiet, and (fingers crossed) will have a set made up before the Kickstarter ends that can be purchased as an Addon.
I'm running a test game tonight, so tomorrow i'll try to post at length with my thoughts.
From reading though, i'm liking blip rules a lot, and really appreciate how different mechanically the two sides already seem to be, even at a glance.
Again though, just from reading, the roll to kill for heavier models (ie damage tables) gives me nightmare memories of WH40k and rolling an obscene number of times to destroy something, in older ed rules.
Scott Washburn from PaperTerrain has been on the comments section of the Kickstarter, asking for requests for scenery pieces. I've already requested a "Battlefield In A Box"-style kit, so it wouldn't help to also voice your desires for that(or other cardstock terrain pieces).

I think the other big thing we want would scenario centric buildings. Key strategic areas like rail hubs, bridges, certain buildings etc.
I also will look at things like mountain passes as key choke points, but I'm thinking paper-mache for that.

Yeah, as Scott himself pointed out...remember these are papercraft models, so think of things along those lines. I'd take a look at his site and see the kits he already has to give you a good idea of what's possible.
I got a good couple games of "Try before you buy" in last night with the wife. I'll report more formally in a couple hours when I have more time. Short version.... some clarifications needed, but over-all it was an incredible good time! This game is going to be AMAZING.
OK, Scott Washburn @paperterrain.com posted an update in comments...the free building will be the only one directly linked to the Kickstarter.
However, he is planning on having several All Quiet On the Martian Front kits available by around August...so plenty of time to get and build them before the game ships in December.
Well, time today is more precious than I anticipated, but I would be remiss if I didn't at least briefly discuss my thoughts on All-Quiet's trial game.
It is, without question, a fast, frantic, and kinetic affair. Things like the second move phase are wonderful and add a dynamism I wish I could import into other systems I love. Similarly the way we played assaults (allowing an assault attack on the move, and also an attack during that phase, with reduced retreat except for rough-riders), felt much more meaningful than the almost throw away "charges" of games I love, like say Malifaux, or Warmachine. Both of these elements sing.
The fact that elements such as the blip system exist for humans, makes the game feel diverse, had my wife and I wanting to trade sides after every game, and speaks well to how different future factions could feel. It is as if the core rules are so functionally simple, that adding entire ones to a faction is not only non-intimidating, but welcome.
Further thoughts, which I will elaborate on later, but will be succinct as my time is short...
- I know scenarios are unbalanced by design in the trial, but Martians won decisively, regardless of who played the, in all four games. Rolling on a damage chart, as I feared, meant that some Tripods endured silly amounts of hits, and humans rarely stood a chance. Had the scenario been time constrained it would have felt like a fun chance to hold out nad endure, but as a kill objective, humans weren't winning.
- The rules are obviously early, but a good editor will have a quick time of standardizing language/terms, and picking optimal ones for clarity. This will obviously get a look before publishing, but for now, its a touch rough.
All in all though, we had a BLAST, and began day-dreaming about big games, advanced/full rules, etc... The consensus was... 1. December is FAR too far away. 2. This game, if tended to, and stewarded well could become a MAJOR system in our hobby. Even in cut down form it is just sooooooo good.
I'm trying to talk my family into all chipping in on this for a combined Father's Day gift for all the fathers.
My Dad is a big fan of Wells and the War. We got him a copy of Little Wars a few years back which he likes to flip through on occasion still. He's got an assortment of walkers and Martian paraphernalia. He's collected toy soldiers since he was a child himself, and is quite fond of turn of the century armies.
This seems like a no brainer then.
Since we're all cheapskates (and have blown tons on other Kickstarters) what do you think would give him the most bang for his buck?
I'm leaning towards the Battle of Memphis, just because it's got a nice rulebook as well as a fair amount of options for both sides.
Plus it's just a bit over a hundred, which between the other siblings I can probably strongarm them into helping contribute and they won't need to spend too much.
Thoughts? Suggestions?
On the plus side if a pledge manager rolls around I can get whatever I want too...

Taking into account stretch goals as well as future potential, your best bang for the buck is probably full assault. If you check frequently, you may be able to snag an early bird at some point (as I was able to about a week ago). That said, Battle of Memphis is probably the second best option if the extra $100 would be a deal breaker. Something to keep in mind though is your getting about $100+ extra in strech rewards at full assault already vs the lower pledges and it will only continue to accumulate more.
I'd concur with Triple9. Battle of Memphis is a great, balanced starter set...but Full Assault, if you can afford it, not only gets you a great value for the minis that are in the pledge level, but is also the lowest pledge level that gets you the highest tier of goal rewards.
I originally had a Full Assault early bird, but left it to move up to an On The Front early bird when one opened up. Even more expensive, but also even better value.
As with any Kickstarter though, you just need to think about what's going to work best for you.
Here is a Battle Report from a game using the "Try before you buy scenario"
AAR -
Ran a demo game last night for my D&D Encounters group to see. They're all broke right this second, but they loved the concept. Long story short, humans ended up winning!
Humans deployed sneakily (all behind at least soft cover), with one of the HMG deploying in the middle wooded area... figuring the tripod would most likely come closest. Martian set up about as far away as possible (1-3" from the edge of the table), since their player loved the Focused variant of the Heat Ray.
Turn 1 - Martian tripod moved forward 6" (didn't feel like moving full speed for some reason) and fired upon a blip at nearly full range. That poor scout never had a chance, but his comrades elsewhere were saved a grisly fate by his distraction. The player was annoyed at the fake-out, so he moved the tripod in the second movement to be able to Sweep the Heat Ray.
The human player basically stayed put, moving some blips in the second move phase.
Turn 2 - Human player won initiative, successfully rolled for the Rough Riders, and they were all allowed to move. They fanned out, almost pincer-style to either side of the tripod. The blips moved away a bit in the second phase to counter the Martian move.
Martian player moved between the middle and left woods, toward the side with only one Rough Rider, and did a Heat Ray Sweep on two of the blips (barely got the edge of one of them). One was fake, the other an actual unit. The doughboys were dug-in, and still two of them were vaporized by the Heat Ray. The soldiers valiantly passed their morale check (crit!) however. The tripod then moved in closer to assault next turn.
Turn 3 - The Martian player won initiative, moved toward another blip to reveal another doughboy unit, and decided to sweep them in stead of finishing off the wounded unit. This attack decimated the troops, killing four of five, and sent the remaining solider fleeing.
The human player's Rough Riders were able to close the distance and miraculously ensnared all three of the legs (out of six cables total). Sensing a weakness, the Human player went for broke and revealed nearly all of their units (including the HMG that had been waiting in ambush in the trees) and proceeded to pepper the immobilized tripod. This furious assault from all sides led to the spectacular demise of the tripod, as it fell and exploded upon impact... though sadly taking the Rough Riders and remaining member of the battered doughboy unit with it. One could call it a Pyrrhic victory, as the humans lost four stands, with a fifth wounded.
All in all, very fast game, very fun. I can only imagine the awesomeness of having more rules/options & actual figures to negotiate around the field.
Good news for our cousins on the other side of the pond. From AD in the comments section...
International Shipping SOLVED.
Huzzah. It was not an easy task. Official announcement later in the day. Wanted to let people know before bedtime.
No VAT, No Import fees for EU and UK. Details coming.
We are pleased to announce our All Quiet Kickstarter has reached a partnership with Renedra to handle shipping in the UK an Europe!
This means NO INCREASE in the flat rate shipping. Plus, all UK and EU customers will not have to worry about VAT or Import Duties!
Anyone in the rest of the world will still pay the same Flat Rate shipping, and if your country charges any of the import taxes or duties, it will be up to you (as we have no control over that).
This is great news and can save many of you a great deal! So please consider pledging today!
Here is the exact text from the update regarding international shipping:
We are very pleased to announce that Renedra, the renowned manufacturer and retailer of plastic miniatures and accessories, has agreed to act as our European Union distributor for the All Quiet on the Martian Front Kickstarter only. We could not be happier with this outcome since Architects of War, our sister company, is the Exclusive North American distributor for Renedra.
What does this mean for you if you live in the UK or EU? There will be no increase in the flat rate shipping charge! You will receive the shipment of your pledge, freebies and any add-on goodies by paying the previously stated flat rate shipping, no additional charges.
So, we have 3 different categories that you can fall into…
**US – Free shipping
**UK and EU – Flat rate shipping stated in the pledge levels or shipping policy for Add-ons. No Vat or other import duties will be charged to you.
**Everybody Else – Flat rate shipping stated in the pledge levels or shipping policy for Add-ons. You will be responsible for any duty or taxes charged at the time of delivery, if applicable.
Hopefully that, and the Brit-faction will bring in some more UK pledgers. This KS is one that legitimately gets better for us at every tier of goal hit, with nary a mediocre reward in sight. The more people who pledge, the greater the value we all receive.
And i'll say this... I've played, or hosted, in the realm of seven games now... That is more than I play most board-games I buy, in their entire life-time. That should say something.
Even the barebones trial is more fun than some whole revised systems i've toyed with.
Teddy Roosevelt stood upon the balcony and watched the crowd wave and cheer at what seemed like teaming masses of troops of the B.E.F. as they marched down Broadway. The crowd was interesting in its own right to the careful observer. They just weren’t Americans. This was New York City. The streets were lined with thousands and thousands of immigrants who had come there looking for a brighter future - Italy, Ireland, Greece, Germany, China- in fact , people from all over the globe. It was as if humanity itself was represented. Cheering. Cheering for salvation from the inhuman monsters that had come from another world. Teddy was also waving with the crowd with his signature grin stretching from ear to ear. Those closest to him could tell that grin was just a little more pronounced. “Bully, bully indeed” he repeatedly muttered, from time to time, as a new unit appeared.
While the public, and even most of his cabinet did not know was that this was the most cheerful Teddy had been in many months. The War, in truth, was going badly. True, the army had rallied after its shocking losses and initial defeats. True, the entire country, every man, woman and child was working, always working, night and day to rush materials to the Front. Training centers everywhere were turning every able bodied man in America into soldiers from the age of 16 to 55. So many scientists, inventors, industrialists - all were throwing everything they could at the “Martian” problem. Old political rivalries were even pushed to the side in the great struggle.
All of that, and daily sacrifices from everyone, and yet America was losing. The Canadians’ were losing. Teddy knew it and the generals knew it. Did the Martians? They had stopped at the Mississippi river for the most part and, though new attacks sprung up along the line every week, the Martians weren’t pressing to hard. The great military minds and Teddy had come to one conclusion. The Martians were consolidating and preparing for the Big Push. The final push. Reports from the occupied territories clearly indicated they were very busy. Cylinders were still falling every night.
Despite the relationship that had been deepening between America and the UK after the First Martian War, Teddy’s efforts to get real help in the form of men and materials had been hard. The British were very grateful for all the help America had given them in rebuilding, especially since so little had come from Europe, but England was hard pressed to hold onto their Empire. In India, the Martians were barely being held at bay by the forces of the Common Wealth. Hong Kong had fallen and all of North Africa including the Sudan and Egypt. At home, the British were even more nervous. What if cylinders fell there? What if France or Germany decided to strike while the UK was so hard pressed?
The British did commit to their American allies in the end. The BEF had arrived and, in all its technological wonder, was driving down Broadway. As spectacular as the sight of the new Imperial and Kitchener tanks were, as impressive as the trotting lines of Sikh horseman were, the marvel of the Gyro tanks, the sound of the bagpipes, Teddy couldn’t help but wonder in the end. His trademark grinned faded, if just for a moment. Would it be enough?
One will be at 9:00 am EST and the other at 9:00 pm EST on Saturday May 25.
Automatically Appended Next Post: Two surprise stretch goals at 180K and 190K. Free scenarios and mini campaign. The bonus stuff from Alien Dungeon
is staggering.
Great Q&A session as always. Seems the British faction is looking very "Elite" in so far as their weapons are better than the US, their vehicles faster, etc.... though I imagine when points values shake-out, they'll field smaller forces in general.
They're also described as Veteran Martian fighters, having already been in the fight for some time.
Further items of note... even their infantry will be elite-armored soldiers.
BTW here's a couple more teaser pics for the BEF. I kind of skimmed the Q&A this morning, so please correct me if I'm wrong...but Alien Dungeon is promising a full reveal(and pledge availability? Not sure on this one) at $200K.
Also, from last night's Q&A, a very nice take-away was AD's head-honcho essentially confirming that post-KS additions to your pledge would be possible, in some form, for a couple of months or so.
Considering the obscene amount of cool stuff that keeps dripping into the game, this makes me very, very happy. I don't think i've ever seen a Kickstarter for a new game system that was already so fully envisioned, before it went live. I mean, the highest tiers of pledges give you piles of value, and yet there are still sooooo many unique models/units/terrain pieces etc... I can't believe that i'm in for almost $500, and still wish I could throw in more.
Oh God... the Benedict Arnold looks sooooo good. I thought i'd maxed out my pledge at $470, thanks to some lucky Zombicide Promo sales.... now selling my much loved X-wing collection seems to be netting me another $300 or so, which can get eaten up very quickly with all the amazing items they keep adding.
Somehow I just feel more hyped for this one daily, and haven't met the weird enthusiasm gaps i've felt during some of the other KS' i'm currently involved with.

Well, the bulk of BEF is supposedly going to be revealed at 200k, but inexplicably this Kickstarter has slowed to a crawl.
Its a shame... people are really sleeping on this one. The free trial rules are great. I wonder how many Dakkanauts are pledging on games right now without even a clue as to their mechanics, while this one, pretty laid bare, and tested by many here, is already proving to be amazing, despite early, cut down rules.
1. From comments, apparently the bulk, or many-many British forces will all be available tomorrow, by noon, EST.
2. There WILL be new pledge levels, possibly one including everything to date, but more likely (all but confirmed) are a few sizes of British faction pledge tiers/bundles.

Looks like that noon deadline won't be met, but for a very good reason...Alien Dungeon has been receiving a lot of critiques on the look of the main service tank, and will be reworking it before putting the BEF up. So, bad news is there's a delay(though they're still planning on posting later today). But the good news is, this is an example of how AD actually listens to their player base!
I would like to see more detail on it, and the paintjob certainly is not helping. As it is many WW2 tank models are just looking a lot better to use.
A lot of it is the round turret vs. the blocky armor. They should go all blocky or all cast/round. It would also look a lot better with more stowage on it. An maybe even some improvised armor? I imagine against a heat ray they crews might add extra water containers around it.
I would also imagine that steam would be a great defense against a heat ray, I know that water vapor actually disperses a laser IRL so any kind of projected EM energy, especially heat, would likely be dispersed or unfocused by passing through heavy water vapor. They mentioned elsewhere 'laying steam' as a defense so I guess maybe they already have the idea....
Don't worry guys... it was just bad photography.... right? :-p
Sorry... couldn't resist. I do agree that several BEF have looked less impressive, to me, thus far, than other factions... but that happens with every game, and personal choice, so it is all good. I'm loving the mono-wheel, and BEF Thunderchild II though.
And here's a pic Alien Dungeon just put up, to show everything that's going to be available in the Kickstarter(so far). (For those of you that haven't pledged yet, be aware that some of the ones that say "free" aren't necessarily included at all the pledge levels.)
Those are actually painted Green guys. They are painted in BEF "In Theatre" colors as they arrive in North America. They don't have all the details added due to time constraints, but they are not Greens in the traditional sense. Those are painted models.
AD Jeff
Oops my bad then, Hoitash! Wow you guys over at AD have been really burning the midnight oil then, to both rework the models AND paint them in time for the BEF reveal.

Yes, let me just second that. In the Q&A this morning, AD said that you can choose up to two different(or the same) pledge levels, and they will both ship for the same postage and both get whatever freebies are promised for those levels.
Here's the current highest tier of goal rewards(but AD has been talking about tossing in a few surprise ones as well). As of this writing, the KS is at $222K.
BIG NEWS FROM AD!

Another amazing Q&A... and hopefully the beginning of an amazing run up to the finish.
Venusian tease was sooooo tantalizing. We NEED to make sure this game has a long healthy life, because a 15mm analog to the Tyranid in this already amazing setting, is something I would throw ALL my money at.
Plus... loads of 15mm civilians and other freebies and goodies right now with some very very big goals to come. If we hit 300k which is attainable, we'll get NINE free rank'n'file tanks! That is awesome.
Consider that poor chap supported, I just signed myself up for the Battle for memphis. My very first Kickstarter, I'm actually a bit anxious. But I'm sooooo looking forward to this game, and my beautiful tripods!
We just surpassed $250K on the Kickstarter, which means a lot of new freebies, as well as the fact that scout tripods will now be tooled in plastic(as well as reducing their add-on price!) Awesome news.
They've done a phenomenal job getting me to slowly up my pledge. Invasion to battle of Memphis to full assault to full assault plus BEF invasion (needed those monotanks). Hopefully they'll use backerkit for the pledge manager and let me add on the ironclads and flame tank. Simply can't afford to take the pledge up higher right now. AD has done such an great job grinding this one out. I don't think I've seen a anyone work this hard on a KS.
OK people, if you're going to pledge, pledge now. Here's the latest from AD:
F WE REACH $300K BY THE CLOSE OF THE KICKSTARTER, NOT ONLY WILL YOU RECEIVE THE STATED PLEDGE REWARDS AND GET THE BALDWIN TANKS INTO PLASTIC (WHICH IS A GAME CHANGER!!), ANY ONE PLEDGING AT INVASION LEVEL OR ABOVE WILL RECEIVE A RESIN CAST FALLEN TRIPOD WITH VIP CREW TRYING TO ESCAPE - A KICKSTARTER EXCLUSIVE. **Limited to one per backer at the Invasion level or above.
So, go forth an continue to spread the word...more backers needed!
And here's the updated goal rewards for the highest levels:
Very excited about this game, and if it makes $300k Baldwin tanks will be plastic and a downed Tripod with escaping crew will be an exclusive add on, very sweet
Just under 2 hours to go and less than 15k to the big bonus. Hopefully some folks on the west coast who may be on the fence are getting into the office a little earlier than normal.
Less than One hour left to get into the game we all wanted as kid, no super marines, not magic users just plane old Earth Vs. the Invaders from space, come on over and support this game
This was an amazing Kickstarter. Not as flashy as a couple of other big tabletop games running at the same time like Dreadzone or Robotech, but I think AD has laid the foundation for a great game. Really excited for December when the game ships.
And frankly, amazed at so many last-minute pledges! Didn't think we'd actually get to $300K, but I guess a lot of people were waiting until the last hour to commit...or were just having a tough time figuring out how much to pitch in, as there are so many great add-ons! It's going to be dangerous for my wallet if we can increase our pledge level once the pledge manager is released...
Actually, the hard part will be when the pledge manager launches and we find out that we can choose to add more money to our pledges to get more add-ons...
Ah... sorry.. mobile device tiny screen. I saw the designs on the bottom of the graphic that look like copies of WWII soviet tanks but couldn't make out the names with the mobile browser.
The imperial main service tank looks like a scifi spin off of the t-34 and the Kichener is heavily inspired by the KV II. I'll rephrase... why does the british stuff look like knockoffs of soviet WWII tanks whereas the american stuff look like knockoffs of WWI british tanks?
It's because the Brits have started reverse engineering Martian stuff from the first invasion. So they have advanced tech, but it takes much longer for them to produce it.
Well, I finalized my order on the pledge manager. I didn't get any add-on stuff because my initial pledge was so darn high. I'm really looking forward to getting this stuff, and maybe playing a mash-up game with Martians vs. Mecha Front mechs!
I can't figure out what add-ons to pledge for at this point. Maybe just the command bunker and some of the other KS exclusives.
Already getting so much that it might be easiest to order anything else I want after fulfillment is complete. I do wish they had some WIP shots of the Goliath or Ironclads. The concepts are great, we haven't seen anything new since the beginning of the KS.
Now we just play the waiting game until our models ship in December, I think. Then we build and paint them. Then we look for other people who play the game (or rope people into it if you have both factions in numbers, which I did so I could try and bring people into the game from my gaming group.)
