well...then i hope you feel proud about it and give it a good resting place in your nerd cave (because with you man cave doensn´t cut it as your better half is with you...)
by the way... what did she say to your most recent creation? after all she is the only one to see it first hand...
Ahh, she loves it! - She helped me get the red mix right, she kept saying..."No, more brick colored!" She likes to sit and read while watching me paint quite often, teasing me about the faces I make when concentrating with the brush
LOL... well her paintmixing sure helped a lot! the color is very much to the point i say...
and...you can´t possibly avoid those facemakings when doing painting or sculpting...heck assembling difficult parts will probably make me do the oddest faces by far^^
Now feth him up though, I want to see him scratched up like my granny after parking her car at the supermarket
Sorry earlier post I made
Also picked up the Vallejo WW2 Allied and WW2 german air sets think they will come in handy for the grot tank colouring, was surprised how thin the consistency is but cant wait to start using them
Do you have any idea how hard it was for me to commit to brush on that eye-scrape? Balls were hanging quite low when I purposely ruined that shiny gold!!

It was worth it in the end it gives it a sense of realism and looks fething awesome
IF you want to listen to a good song... then listen to back in black... it is my favorite song nowadays due to the first movie of iron man...and replaced thunderstruck and TNT even...
I don't think so LDD, they are still acrylic, water is still the medium I think... so it should take just as long to dry as water takes to evaporate. You haveing trouble?
Do you have a small electric table fan? I use that as my turbo-drying system. Moving air across it should help. If it is as humid there today like it is humid here, that might have something to do with it too.
No, it was the air range so I gathered there was no need to thin it down sprayed in thin layers so not thickly sprayed.
It dried ok and the heatings on so it was not cold in the house, might give a fan ago next time, drying not overly longer than normal just seemed a bit longer though.
Dried ok now mind and have given it a second coat of the next colour so seems ok, I have invested in a better compressor mind, hopefully be here at the beginning of next week.
It has a holding tank and regulator unlike the one I am using at the moment.
Oh yeah. those diapragm compressors are no fun....
Make sure you get a moisture trap of some kind too, you can get condensation in a tank, and it splatters and makes you say bad words.
dsteingass wrote:Oh yeah. those diapragm compressors are no fun....

Yes the one i am getting comes with one fitted plus I have the mini one that fits on my airbrush came with the kit
Vitruvian XVII wrote:How much did that set you back ldd?
Been meaning to get a compressor with tank for a while now.
£112 free postage on evil bay best deal I could find, the one I had cost me a bout £45 a few years ago so quite happy with this find.
Have a look around though you get good deals all over, I was lazy and found this and thought that will do, compared to the rest on there it was the best price.
Cant wait to get this new compressor airbrushing is rewarding and addictive have to say I am not over amid with the Vallejo airbrush thinner I found the Tamiya solution much better IMHO
sounds like you use the wrong paints and in the wrong direction... ON the mini... not IN your face.!!!
sniffing paint...the new scourge to our youth... all them kids with funny painted faces...the horror...
Mind you I did end up spraying myself in the face with it once by mistake luckily it missed the eyes don't ask how but lets say I know why they build airbrush stands

No, I used the thinners for the GW Red Gore paint as I have no colour in the Air range (as of yet ) that was right or near to the colour needed.
The Tamiya thinners works great and does not alter the colour, worked better than water to be honest.
I bought the Vallejo airbrush cleaner as it was quite cheap in the same shop I got the paints, But I have heard windex works well (no doubt is even cheaper )

oh yeah...Airbrushing would not be affordable for me if I had to use pre-made AB cleaner all the time.
All you need is a spray bottle of windex and a big refill jug of windex. I just spray windex in the cup, and spray it onto a white paper towel until no color comes out, wipe it out with a rag then spray the nozzle area, retract the needle back (so I don't bend it) and then use the citadel stippling brush to clean out any gunk (that is the only use I've found for the citadel stippling brush)
I have good, filtered city water, so minerals aren't usually a problem in my water, but If I had the iron-filled rusty water from where I grew up, that would probably be a problem.

I skimmed the last few pages so initially I didn't realise you had painted and weathered the whole thing. I actually thought you had a bought a pre-painted kit.
I salute your skill - this looks like one of the awesome set pieces that Forbidden Planet show in their stores.
P.S. This piece is the best thing to come out of the Iron Man films.
P.P.S. Just exalted your post with the completed Iron Man. Cos it damn well SHOULD be exalted.
Spraying one self in the face is not recommended, also no mention of it in the destruction manual
No real damage as the paint allowance nozzle was opened only slightly thankfully, I got more sprayed in my mouth and nose to be honest, don't swear as you drop stuff
I looked at a bag of bits from hasslefree miniatures, but I was not sure if they would be that much use
If you're interested, the seller still has some available (they must have inherited a watch-maker's stuff)
I got one of each, regular and tiny- note the size

nice idea to go with gears for base detailing...that amount should last quite some time i think...
my own preference tho for gears is now more into plasticgears from wasted wound up cars and other toys...the plastci is rather nice to cut... but then again the metal ones are way thinner...depends on the project i would say...
Yeah, it is interesting...I haven't figured out the rest of it yet, but I knew I wanted an open-topped walker with this crazy dude at the controls
..And it will have at least one Vickers machine gun...somehow

What's going on with his right arm? It looks attached already, but has the hole drilled in the hand...
Watch jems are usually made from rubies! But I suppose they are very very small so no great value. I seem to remember reading that they use them as bearings because they are so very hard-wearing.
The new walker driver looks swank. His levers are so very steam-train-esque.
dsteingass wrote:Yeah, it is interesting...I haven't figured out the rest of it yet, but I knew I wanted an open-topped walker with this crazy dude at the controls

i am totally hooked up on this idea mister! but one thing i have to point my ugly finger at...
the second pic...the one from behind... looks as if he is stiing on the throne... and having a nasty bum related accident ...
i think a backrest to cover that up a bit would be good... i even have a nice idea to bring you more ease with GS... try the putty rivetmaking with granny grating idea to get a plush seat... i bet that would look awsome to the rest of your already good looking steampunk feel...!
I really appreciate all the comments guys! It really means a lot, thank you!
@Vik
That bum-accident is putty, filling in his butt-cheeks, because the sentinel pilot legs has no butt- you won't see it, so it really isn't worth worrying about. But I REALLY like your idea for the plush cushion..I will dwell on this!
I'm truly happy for whomever uses GS and finds it easy, I really am. Perhaps I am doing something wrong, that's quite probable actually, but I tried sculpting the top part of that hat 8 goddamn times!! I'd get it perfect, but then when I went to join it to the rim, it would smash and look like gak, so I added a piece of tubing, a solid material, with consistant properties, which I can control.
Automatically Appended Next Post: @Rawson- THe right hand will be grinding on some other sort of gear-shifter lever that hasn't been devised quite yet.
That's awesome Not_u!
I was going to do something like that on the throtlle controls between his knees, but I decided some fine wooden knobs would better fit the steam feel. But he will be surrounded by gagues and few steam valves, maybe that'll fit in there somewhere.
I was thinking something like my Grandfather's Farmall tractor levers for his right hand.
Btw, if you leave the gs to go hard for 30-40 mins it becomes a lot more manageable. I generally work on organics straight away, anything inorganic i wait for it to harden slightly.

It sounds like you're rushing it. With GS, you have to break the sculpting into manageable parts so you don't continuously ruin your previous work. For example, if you remember my second Vendetta pilot, I had to sculpt the goggles first, wait for them to cure, then sculpt the moustache. Otherwise, I'm sure I would have fethed up the goggles I worked so hard on.
In other news, great progress on your walker! I love the application of all the gears and pistons
When you're done, we're going to have to but your steam walker and Vik's steam walker in a jar, shake it up, and watch them fight!
ok mate... that current update is very good looking! with all the nice features like the boiler (clever idea to use a base for the mainplate!!! btw!) and all other feats like the excellent pistons... one might overlook some very neat and rather brilliant details... the levers are mounted on what looks like halfdiscs...THAT! my friend shows how much you think about a project! i really like that small detail that shows your true observation skills! also the small springs under the seat/compartment platform!...
by the way... will you build a canopy? maybe it wont be needed... but the plush seat i think will add lots of nice detail for your creation!
this will be quite huge i think... it will certainly dwarf the average sentinel walker...have you yet decided if this will be a quadruped or biped?
i am really looking forward to all the other small details that will be coming next...
truly...steampunk is something one has to have a very strong mind to refuse...and a serious bad taste^^
I haven't planned anything actually, I'm just making this up as I go. Actually, it isn't much bigger than a Sentinel, I am modelling the legs after a sentinel's legs.
well dave... seeing it next to the sentinel i still feel i am in the right to say that it looks and will get bigger than the sentinel... but i think then that will be totally allright! as steamnpunk isnt known for its frail looking vehicles... sure posh and delicate details all over...but look at the eifel tower... now that isn´t exactly some frail structure now is it?^^
and jake...that was exactly in my mind... some seat like that! or even more like that here..leather is also one of steampunks hallmarks...
oh man...what else comes next...i am really sorry to hear that... i think it is because of that, that our household has no pets /animal friends... even the smallest pets i had in childhood when they passed left big gaps in our soul... even tho they can bring so much joy i want to spare my kids that hurt...
am i in the wrong for thinking that way?
i hope you and lauri can cope with this in these troubled times of yours...(and i know that will be hard!) keep well mates!
She was my best friend for the past 14 years..I guess I always thought she'd live forever.[/quote
Aww, I guess I missed that, I'm really sorry, and my condolences. RIP (Fido?)
14 years...? that is crushing... may i ask what was her name? and what kind of dog? that is truly a long time relationship...i really don´t want to trade places with you...
as for the living forever part... i guess we just shift into that kind of train of thought... death is always so alien to our way of being that we try to keep it away as much as possible...even to the extent to totally forget about it at all...
i had lived my life as a sigle man without any fears...now with a family my life has so many fears of loss... the more we gain the more we fear to loose... well they say you have to be thankful for the good times been given to you...but really sometimes that is quite hard to believe...i think i am a rather worse shoulder to cry on...
im sorry for you lose dave, even though the only pet i ever lost i only had for 2 years, it was still really hard to lose him, and its hard to this day
I am so sorry to hear of your loss Dave and can only offer my deepest condolences, I always say pets are the family you choose and therefore hurt the most when they are gone.
However you always have the memories and the joy she brought and will continue to bring, although the thought of loosing mine is unbearable even to imagine, the joy they bring is irreplaceable.
That is soo true LDD! Thank you for all the condolences everyone! For those of you with a pet, give yours a little exta attention today please. And know that the little things they do that annoy you from day to day will be the first things you'll miss!

I will give them a little pat on the head from you Dave and little annoying things I have it in stereo
So have you worked out what kind of shell you are adding to the steam punk ……. err thing
What do you think of the shape of the cab? I thought It would resemble a miniature locomotive cab, but open-topped, to showcase all the crazy controls.
You know thats kind of weird I kept thinking of a steam train and that massive plough at the front, I thought of mentioning that but then I thought that just sound s daft so didn't
That was the kind of look I was hoping that might creep its way in so totally agree your on the " cough right track cough " plus the front screams Locomotive to me have you been reading those railway modeller magazines
Absolutely! I looked at this pic quite a bit for reference, among others
A lot of riveting potential, and yes Not_u- some pinstriping!!
I thought of a cow-catcher on the front for the look, but didn't know if it would make sense. I do want to keep it as compact as possible, built for speed, rather than pulling loads.
hmmmm..>I've been thinking since the boiler will make it front-heavy that the toes would have to be longer (like the AT-ST) - Cow catchers on the feet just might work!! Great idea- we will have to test this look though...see if it looks right in proportion.
"This'll look awesome... Why does it look so crap?..."
you know what? your scratchbuild minis have caused a new idea in me... i think this will also lead to me doing some chaosy stuff...then i might feel inclined to quote that^^
Hey Dave, as I really didn't know what to say, I've been putting off comenting tbh... I don't know how you feel, but unfortunately one day I will. As I have my awesome cat. but the main thing I wanted to say is I'm sorry for your loss.
and don't worry the cat always makes sure I give her extra fuss by sitting on me
dsteingass wrote: For those of you with a pet, give yours a little exta attention today please.
I did just like you asked Dave, and I kicked the wife's cat a little softer than usual. I think he really appreciated it. Seriously though, I had a wonderful and annoying Beagle-Basset Hound cross a few years backs. I still miss her curling up next to me on the couch.
Anyway. I like the cow-catchers on the feet idea! I hope that it is workable. I don't know if you were trying for it, but the driver has sort of a Steampunk Doc Brown from Back to the Future feel to him! You should name him something that starts with "Mad Doc", like Mad Doc Stevens or something like that!
Keep up the great work! And the sirens song of Steampunk is undeniable! Is it not?
Doc Brown is always in the back of my mind!
"I didn't have time to build it to scale or paint it" - His best line in every movie!! The cow-catchers on the feet will definately work- I just have to figure out the feet. I want them to have the same ball-socket-type ankle joint as the sentinel, or something similar that would give stabilization on uneven terrain.
I like the Dreadnaught claw-type feet, but I want to avoid anything looking-too anime-ish (large bell-bottom legs and such), I want this to look distinctly reminiscent of mid 19th Steam power, which means broad flat and round surfaces.
I am especially fond of this lovely mx of pinstriping and rivets
Maybe this can help, looks like someone was designing some thing but didn't read up on it too much. Something about rebuilding a Dreadnought from Space Crusade.
Interesting to see how it turns out anyway.
Also found this while looking around, thought it was nice.
that last feet looks like someone took a bionicle feet and build up from there...
and man...this thread turn out to be going for my own personal gallery i have gathered on my PC... your referrence pics always have been there before^^ but i kept them to myself for now...being the miserable miser that i am^^
i feel like totally idiot every time i com up with only praise...but you leave us no options....darn...
that walker...looks so cool! the feet! terrific!and the whole transmission setup looks really convincing!
tho now seeing the whole almost finished basic shape... i wonder if the boiler would have looked better facing backwards...
by the way... will this be an aggressive means of transportation or something for civil use? oh...i remember reading about vickers and so on...if these are not stand in´s as a more "in-your-face" kind of horn^^ then it will be a more agressive vehicle^^
WOW- Thanks a lot guys!
Still much more to do on this yet, and since I'm making this up as I go, suggestions/ideas are always welcome!
I have sort of ignored the firing of the furnace bit, with hopes that the rest of the model's pseudo-realism will compensate while the rule of cool still applies
@LDD- that is just wire wrapped around a piece of tubing, real springs would likely put too much pressure on glued stuff.
I will NEVER click OT ever again...I have to limit myself to P&M blogs for sanity's sake.
In other news...Picture Twin-linked Vickers MGs...
But with these rotater and azimuth brackets, gear-driven...
..And mounted under the nose of the walker???
Un-Freaking-Believable Dave! Holy Cow! I could go one, but it would start to digress into self loathing and I would rather not go there right now.
I can't believe how workable it looks! You know, you are going to have build several of these. I see many Chirstmas presents for -=]_,=- members in the future!
I want to alter my suggestion from before, for the driver, yes, a victorian style seat back, but make it a skinny one, like below, and it will not only fit the coat better, but give it a reason for flaring out as it does.
Just wow. Keep up the amazing work Dave. I can't wait to see what is next!
if you do the vickers for a gun...will it be drum fed or belt fed? i would love to see you do the belt fed version...as a little gem to draw some attention away from the driver for a sec^^
i have read that some peeps did make rivets with copper tubes...they sharpened the rim and then used it in your manner... with bigger tubes and then sharpened rims you could choose what size you want maybe?
and i would love to see you do individual bullets on these belts...what kind of material would you use for making the actual belt? thin PC? what about texture? i bet you could also use zinge belts, but these then would look a bit more modern...
Oh No! I'm using Zinge Belts for sure...Once you get your hands on some of them vik, you'll realize how superior they are! The copper rivetmaker is a great idea! I keep 1/16" copper tubing and brass rod around, but not much else metal-wise...hmmm
oh i have a bunch of zinge stuff waiting to be used already...and i do know it is excellent stuff!...one of my oh so many future projects was to make a tesla tank...his tesla coils are just so freaking cool looking!
Thanks Jake! - t's just a rectangle tube with a strip of u-channel on top, then cut
Yep, Zinge makes some great things..I changed my mind and went with a different ammo belt of his, this one resembles the pointy Vickers rounds better IMHO ..And built the ammo boxes
Thanks Marty! I was scrounging for rectangle tubing the right size for ammo boxes, when I found these clear caps from the Raboesch styrene containers!- Just cut a little angle and made a rack to hold it I saved a bunch of them

and mate... your wickers are just the sweetest kind of gun i have layed my eyes upon! all the very small and perfectly done detail!
also i like how you mounted them guns to the walkers chassis! only fitting way i thinkto do the model justice! what clever plan do you have devised to make the model look more balanced? you need some niceley done smokestacks, mabye that is a way to get the mass of the walker better optical balanced by this...
Automatically Appended Next Post: We'll see three more pieces of terrain, a lego village or two and at least 9 pages of =]_,= rambling before that sees paint.....
HAHAHA you guys are nuts! I will be finishing this model (with paint) as soon as it is done, but it isn't done yet.
I don't want to add the smokestack (or even the Vickers) permanently until I am done manhandling the model, adding details, rivets, pipes, etc. But you can relax, it will definately have a smokestack (and petticoat- so the smoke doesn't obscure the pilot's vision too much), steam dome, headlamp,regulator/throttle valve, and safety valve, but there is no need for a sand dome, since there are no rails and no traction concerns.
Vik, when you say balanced, are you talking about aesthetics? or weight? Because it is supposed to look like a sentinel, if I add some large mass at the back, it won't look right (look at the silouette of a Sentinel and then this, they match more or less.). It is intended to have the scissored look of a walker, with the (forced) center of gravity at the hip joints. But the Sentinel's power plant is in the rear, mine is in the front- you're just going to have to deal with that difference in your brain I guess
I'm not adding any kind of counter-weight at the back, so sorry if this dissapoints anyone, you're just going to have to trust me. Hopefully. I am hoping that if it doesn't look right yet, it is just because no one is used to seeing this design yet.

Yep, I'm going to run hoses from the bottom rims, under the barrels and up into the water system of the walker in whatever way looks the coolest You may have noticed, but I don't have ANY pipes ran yet...This will come, probably tonight
You guys are making me blush with all the praise! I didn't realize people would like this so much, It was really just an excersize in cutting and gluing shapes in different combinations, to see what I could make and as an excuse to use the ebay watch gears in a project

Well, I'm not opposed to the idea of a steam-powered chimera at all, I think it's a great idea, I just don't want to embark on another army-building project any time soon.
@Vik, the Petticoat is the flared cap for the smokestack, trains all had to fit under standard-height overpasses and tunnels, so they built Steam Locomotives as big and powerful as they could within those height restrictions. When moving at speed, the smoke from the engine would flow right back into the cab, so they flared the top of the smokestack with the petticoat to raise that smoke level above the cab I have raised my cab on my walker, because it doesn't have to fit in a tunnel.
oh...i tried one already...but the shape looked wrong.,..and back then i didn´t knew how to get the treads right... but that is all history^^ when the knight is finished...hopefully soon then there is no stopping^^
beside...that one is going to be done all in plastic... and i have yet to see a way to use your circut aquilla... that trophy is still unused...which verges on crime^^
Yes..I have one problem though Master....I don't know what to use for my petticoat! I can make infinite circles, but what to use for the flared shape??
If you glue together disks of plasticard of graduated sizes then you can fill the gaps with green stuff to make the cone shape, then just use tubing for the rest of it.
hmmm... what about thin PC for the cone shaped parts? or you do little stripes and make it angled looking and then later on you can always sand it down to the round looking look you aim for...
For the petticoat, try using thin PC, find anything cone shaped and use it to cut a sheet of PC that can be rolled into a cone. I have done that and all you would have to do then is brace the inside of the joints between straight tube and cones....
It isn't easy but it is quick and can be done with a minimum of fuss and time...
Or scavange ala the Master known as Vik until you find an old toy to use.....
You didn't hear it from me but some legos would be the perfect item to use as a shaper piece......

also i like the idea of adding the fender with the dimond pattern , that is a nice touch!
as for the smokestacks petticoat thing... if you have solid rods of PC in a really thick diameter you could sharpen them with a pencil sharpener to a pointy cone...then cut off the tip...done! petticoat ready for adding...
Im not entirely sure, but in all my time of watching Thomas the Tank, (and thats probably a good 5 years of my childhood) i dont remember Thomas as a death dealing steampunk walker driven by the fat controller!!
