Yep...but for me, building is problem-solving, so that occupies my mind...Painting though...I think about gak when I paint much more than when building.

i can see how this works for you... my mind tho is always half concentrated while building...maybe that´s why i haven´t reached your skilllevel...yet
The drawing was pretty cool though, if not functional-looking.

No, you have all the skill, you just aren't free to make a mess like I am Vik - you should see the plastic dingleberries all over my floor!

Do dingleberries mean the same thing as they do over here
and at LDD... it is the same with a car crash... you can´t just decide to not look...or as my favorite author said... you can not think of a pink elephant... if someone says the words the thoughts happen...
1. Vaccinium erythrocarpum, the Southern Mountain Cranberry
2. Any residual irregularity following processing
3.(slang) A small piece of feces clumped to hair around the anus.
4.(slang) A stupid person.
5. What LDD is called when he posts Vanilla Ice on our threads

Thanks a lot guys!
@Rawson- sorry about the bar, I was tired of hitting my head on it all the time @Moltar- no, that's a plastic sewing snap
@LDD THanks bro
..Couldn't help it...I was studying these pictures, thinking in basic shapes and layers, then cutting basic shapes of styrene and combining them.
Just break what you see down into basic shapes

^ well threads like this, and the hunde des kriegs help me not only refine my ideas about my ig, but also give me some nice things to base my modles off of, i know people say not to do that, but if i dont i wont get any better (which is why there are a rare few of my many models that i am actually proud of)
Ideas are good, but you learn by doing. The more you do, the more proud you become...It is a pleasant feeling when I look at that cab and I say "Damn!, I did that?"
Although I am sad that the piston legs have gone maybe used brass rod for strength next time It is am amazing piece of art this and I would be proud to own such an original piece in my collection
The basing maybe simple but works perfectly and ties in so well (is that the cobblestone sheet you had ?)
I have learnt a load from this and has answered several conundrums concerning my grot tank So BIG THANKS piping and gauges
Have you got the colour scheme in mind, I can see some decent airbrush work coming soon
As for the judging scale lets just say Dave is the master of Extreme Platircard Work
1. No, sorry, there will be no coal hopper on the back- I want it to have the scissored look,
only the Baneblade and the hellhound have fuel tanks modeled (and it's ammo for the hellhound).
2. Yes, the basing is 1/35 cobblestone streets from Miniart
3. no, it will not have the -=]_,=- logo on it
4. How does the pilot get into and out of a regular Sentinel?
5. Twin-linked Vickers machine guns
There will be lots of brass, don't worry The photoshopping is inspired from the ones in the Imperial Armour books for sure!
It'll be mostly black, but should have color as well.
@Childe, I'm really starting to hate that pic
Which is great, except I do not agree with the author's statement (paraphrasing) that "everything" in the American West was hand-made", or locally produced. That is a bit of a stretch, the nature of the economy at the time allowed distant settlements or towns and the railroad to transport food first and foremost. Only when Man doesn't have to spend al lhis time gathering food can he ever expand or settle new territories. This is a universal law for all societies. The 19th Century in the westward-expanding US really set the benchmark for long-distance economies. The Sears & Roebuck catalog at the time, allowed you to order specialized farming machinery, household goods, and even an entire house delivered as a giant railroad-delivered kit! Images of those old catalog drawings are completely steampunk in my humble opinion.
Rogue Wolves wrote:i think you passed awsome before all this, i need to come up with a new judging scale, and this will be at the top!
dave is building in ludicrious speed...that´s why he is able to but so much awsomeness in his creations!!!
those gauges are so sweet looking man! and i love how you kept an almost symetric look to the cockpit!
the fact that you had to redo the legs...well i guess it was about to happen as the piston legs have not really enough support in them...maybe if you had cheated and drilled them in so to speak...using tubes with a bit of metal rod inside...then this could have worked...
but the new base looks very good and i am very pleased with the look good sir...you do very well for the league mister!
cheers, vik
by the way... had to get yesterday an early nigt due to a cold i catched...
There comes a time in every project where we must just say "enough" and move on It's grey ab primer- I didn't have any black primer..plenty of black paint tho.
That is just the cut of his jacket Vik

well...maybe you can get away with it due to the paintjob then... depends on wgat colors you use for the coat... black and all will be covered in darkness

Dave? Shush ya pie-hole... eeeesh I'm lucky if I get most of my conversions done in a week. So consider yourself lucky and get back to making and/or painting scenery
If you're going for a primarily black walker (Black and brass is going to look sweet, btw!), I'd pick a different color for the jacket. That would be a lot of black, IMHO.
Dave make something really bad all this praise for you is starting to make me want to vomit I cant keep this up much longer
i have to second that one...dave it is time for mediocre attempts...!!! you put us all to shame...
well of course... i see your point here... ok... what about making the coat a leather coat? a nice bleached bone base and then go wild with devlan mud in multiple thick layers...that looks later on as if it is greasy and oiled leather...
i am quite thrilled if the glazed look will stay or what comes next!
Yeah- there are soo many great rule systems already- GW is the only company that really has a monopoly on their "game" so to speak. There are others of course, but GW is sort of unique in how they do it.
Unreal work, Dave. Absolutely inspirational, you've really taken it to the next level. You must be getting immune to this kind of praise, but this is probably the most technically impressive thing you've done - so much detail! and the nonsense conversation is always entertaining when I'm catching up
HAHA- Thanks Scarper! No, always love to hear what people think, good and bad. We've got plenty of the nonsense going on, that's fer sure! You can't really incubate a free creative environment without plenty of goofing off involved
Thanks! I really don't know what to do with this newfound power yet though I'd like to use these DCM tools to promote and support scratchbuilders and terrain-makers if I can.

as for the walker...brass and metal work looks very god already...and i am all for going red... that would bring forh the lokomotive look even more! go for it...
ah...and congratz for aquiring that super cool titel due to your newfounded DCM status...! (eventually i will do that too in the coming moths...)
But I don't really want it to be green, I'd like it to remain black.....yet the green looks sweet too...grrr...I don't have patience for my indecision!
awww... and now i thought i would see an update when after a long family day i come back to dakka to see more of my favorite lokomotive walker mix...and whyt do i see...nuffin`...harumph....
I might have said it before, Dave, but let me say it again: You're a freak of nature! You're scratchbuilding skills in combination with your speed are unholy!
There is really only one thing I can nitpick on your walker, which is bad , because it makes me feel phlegmatic and must therefore be bad-mouthed... back to that single piece of criticism: The balance is off, that thing would tip over in an instant.
Great work as usual.
hmmm.... well today felt like weekend still^^ i know it sounds very dumb to say it but we even had a day off before... we call it bridge day... if you have a holiday close to the weekend lots of workers have a free day on top... yes... compared to you americans we europeans are rather lazy^^
Thanks Baiyuan...But IMHO the whole suspension of disbelief is all part of the steampunk fantasy art Vibe, as opposed to the steampunk "maker" practicality Although the lines are blurry between the two, and they are by no means mutually exclusive...Steampunk (as we perceive it today) has evolved from both the artistic and practical schools of thought...
Vik all he has to do is wash it over with some ink, it'll knock back the harshness of it a bit too. plus there's also weathering paints Dave can add too.
Not impossible, Rawson. It's Dave we are talking about. He could do it in about three minutes flat and show you the realization of the idea you only half thought......
Chuck Norris once built a Steampunk Warhammer scratch build. His name is Dave and everything he builds kicks @$$ as hard as Chuck Norris......
It looks better every time I see this like the new paint selection although I was hoping for Red but hey the pin-striping looks tops but does need a name or number now.
I think you need to whip out the make-your-own decals kit, print up a "Builder's Plate", and print it out. Paint a brass square or shape, and black lettering (or leave the letters blank and do the reverse lettering trick...on the decal.
A quick Google search of: "locomotive builder's plate" gets a zillion hits like this one:
Looking amazing Dave! I think you should incorporate the two ideas! Name of manufacturer, and until name/number.
Unit name/number in large block letters in the middle, with the name of the Forge World arched over the unit desigantion, and the 40k date of original production arched under.
Well, I really hadn't envisioned this thing as 40k to begin with really, more intended to exist in the mid to late 19th century as the creation of a mad Railroad Baron Historically, in the US the front boiler plate had the engine#, the side of the cab had the train#, and the Road Name was on the coal/wood/oil tender..
I know...But I can never seem to find old GW Praetorian figs, but I completely dig the look. I think the Perry Brothers are now doing their own Pith-helmeted 28mm plastics aren't they? -Should be easy converting if they do.
Automatically Appended Next Post: I see American Steampunk as less British Empirey, but more like a Tycoon's private army.
Between my collection of Col.Gravis' Praetroian Rough Riders, my own conversions, Perry Bros' and Victoria Lamb's work...
Yeah, I'm pretty much set.
My debate, as always, is if I want to ditch my current vehicles and build all new Steampunky stuff, or if I want to try and "Stempunk-Up" Chimeras, etc.
And, of course, WYSIWYG is always a consideration.
Well, you can't have artistic freedom AND WYSIWYG rules...If the people you are playing with are THAT anal, the only thing they will be happy with are marines vs. marines...and that type of person is still gonna bitch anyways. I'd rather not play at all than play with or against that kind of nerd...sorry
Well, yes and no. Adepticon showed me that there's definitely some flexibility on the "National Stage". The key for WYSIWYG, going forward in a post-GW-restrictions world, it to make sure that your opponent understands, clearly, "What is what". So, you may have a pair of Vicker's MGs on your Sentinel, but if you consistently use those as a "Multilaser"...no-one is going to care. For me, WYSIWYG is all about conformity. This is always a multilaser, this giant contraption is a Dreadnought, etc. etc.
I had a GREAT game against Dakka Detachment 3 at Adepticon against RiTides' army. An army made up of Starship Troopers miniatures backed up by another company's warmachines being used as Dreadnoughts:
We knew what everything was, and had the pleasure of playing a unique army.
Of course, outside of the Tournament field (where I honestly prefer to play), as long as everyone knows what's going on, and is having a good time, well waaagh it up!
aw man, no apologies needed...I've only actually played a handful of games of 40k ever, but i've been collecting and painting my army for several years.
I'm too slow, I don't know the rules well enough, I spend too much time flipping back and forth through the books looking things up. That irritates people, so I need another novice to play with to get to know the rules I guess.
..The Catachans continue to grow though Never finished...never finished.
Yeah, I have the same problem. I'm way more interested in modelling and building, than playing. I mean, I'm building an Ordinatus fer F*cks sake.
Nice Bomber.
I'm hoping to start building up a local campaign group of beer-and-pretzels gamers, who aren't worried about not knowing the page-and-paragraph of all the rules, but want to play to have a good time.
FutureTense wrote:Supply the beer and homemade pretzels and they'll find you.
TRUE! I could join a local group of geeks, but historically it has always been hard for me to keep regular gaming schedules..Of course back when I played a crap-ton of Necromunda I was also in college and working two jobs....perhaps now would be better

wow.... that looosn so cool already! and may i say... i take back what i said about the gap in the arm coat connection... you mastered that issue like a true professional...the coat looks very cool! and do i see pinstripe trousers? cool idea!
the very fact that you just grabbed the "501" and told us that it was coincidence is just a new way to make you so very much likeable!!! i for one love it when simple solutions still bring the same effect as a long hard thought and way too much meaning in all!!!
by the way... can i make a suggestion dave? i think you should do some billowing smoke for the walker...some cotton wool...hardened with PVA... with your ever growing AB skills i bet you could come up with some awsome effects!!
Haha Thanks Vik! Yep, I see soo many threads where the artist seems like he spends more time talking/typing out their current hobby conundrum than it would have taken to just glue something together and try it. I needed numbers, I looked through my box-o-decals, and picked that sequence because...well..it's better than 728 or 541 I suppose
As we are talking Dave's master class of sticking stuff together guess what turned up today Yes my very own sniper base great work and looks brilliant .
Love the rivet strips at the bottom that was a cool touch really impressed would show a picture but the misses has the camera at work today ……. Dam birthdays

-The book is fantastic! I would highly recommend it!!
Notice the use of GW bitz
-This White Dwarf is completely uninteresting to me, all Necrons and more of the endless stupid fething marines, a little bit of Empire, but not much. Jervis Johnson gives some surprisingly sage advice in his column, not his usual self-righteous gak. Not a hint at all about 6th edition 40k Issues like this one are the downside to having a subscription.
-The tread plate plasticard really doesn't need explanation
nice book dave! on the WD, i think that the only real usefull thing in it is the empire paint stuff, not because i play empire, which i do, but because its painting cloth, which could be used for any army
I have a couple units of Empire painted myself...Last month's WD..That was soo full of Empire Goodness!- I haven't really looked at the new painting system too closely yet, I need some help with painting cloth.
the new painting system, is makes in unnaturaly easy to acomplish things that would take more time with doing in the old system, i personaly used the skin, and space wolf blue tutorials and they turned out farily well for me
I didn't do gak tonight...I probably won't do much this whole weekend. We are going to Indianapolis this weekend to see Weird Al Yankovik!, I'll probably stop in the GW whle I'm there, I'd like to pick up the new Empire Army book, maybe some other plastic crack too
lol have fun with Al, and your crack.. unfortinatly for me I chose to pick of some FWIG bits instead of the empire book, but i'll be getting that soon enough
Dave, you have made some awesome stuff lately! I've only just caught up with the pics at home as my work computer blocks just about everything now! :-( I love the steam walker, something about it makes me smile! I also found a kit I bought, it's an abs plastic pack, it's got a heap of differing sizes of tube down to thin plastic rods (rivets anyone?) it also has a few L shaped edges I can use for capping terrain, only $16 bucks, hopefully it'll arrive monday then i can do some holo table work and get some opinions!
In the meantime, keep going dude I love seeing what spills forth from that creative mind of yours!
Great find there I found that book on a search and though it looked interesting wish I had bought it know the other one looks like it could be worth a look as well
You seem to have an endless cash supply Dave all these new toys and supply drops on a weekly basis, I think you must have some kind of side line going what could that be then
I hope we don't see your home being raided on some news report in the near future
??? you need advice in scatchbuilding? mister wgo are you kiddin`? i mean....you need to write a book on your own...to be honest... look at the stuff you already did from scratch... small arms, vending machines, walkers of steampunk and the endless terrain you are chucking out... honestly...it´s like teching the pope to pray...er...on second thought... i think that is high time someone did just that!^^
the steampunk book...and that beatiful mark V tank! classy stuff... one of these days i have to get me a kit of the topmost favorite of all time tank of mine!
and...weird al yankovic still moves about? didn´t knew...
Good Find Nerdfest! - I can't wait to see what you do with al lthat new plastic crack!
@LDD- how many times do I have to re-explain "WE DO NOT HAVE KIDS" and "MY GF IS NOT A NARCISICST"- That equals more money for ourselves Have you ever seen those stickers people put on the back windows of their vehicles, two adults, one for each kid, onr for their dog or cat?? -If we had those stickers they would be two adults and a bag of money @Vik- Education is never a bad thing my friend - And of course Al is still around, still selling out shows- the man is a genius.
Dave is the pinnacle of DINK... double income no kids... with the addition like he stated of having an understanding better half that seems to be not addicted to shoes and handbags...tho one has to occaisionally ask if she is a woman^^ because lets face it that is very unique... but then again...my wife hates shopping too...well...i am a guy and i love shopping so there you are
She is definately a woman ..And Vik is correct- DINK, and we are both geeks.

Media and social conditioning. This response from Ashley Judd to the media is a good starting point for what is wrong in society regarding women.
I've had relationships with various types of women and the only one that's ever lasted for me is the one with my current girlfriend. She's bright, motivated, confident, doesn't want kids, and is a total geek in a non-toy-soldiers-and-video-games kind of way. She works as a fashion designer (designs for a handbag company currently) and can explain the construction of any garment, plot it out flat on paper in no time, and can assemble it perfectly. And she's always go a cute outfit on to boot. Add in that we share the same vices, and I'm a very lucky man!
