Thank you everyone, wonderful feedback, and comments.
I will get to replying, but just for now here is an attempt at Ivy....
Snowflake punch, and bit of wire and some superglue.
Thoughts?
I have been looking on line and got to say there is an oppurtunity here, just can't get a reasonably priced leafy thing.
68345
Post by: xXWeaponPrimeXx
They still look like snowflakes to me.
Could you snag some fake ivy from a craft store? Or some fish tank plants you can cannibalize?
62749
Post by: Dr H
It's not bad.
From a distance (e.g. not blown up to ~10" on my computer screen) and if you didn't know them to be snowflakes, they do look like leaves. Not terrestrial Ivy (due to the difference in shape), but they don't have to be terrestrial plants.
68345
Post by: xXWeaponPrimeXx
Maybe cut off one or two of the tips to make fewer leaves?
30672
Post by: Theophony
Make it climbing clover, but have one cut down to four leaves instead of three and you can have people hunt for it. Also need a grot cabana boy , or an Orc who looks like Isaac from the loveboat .

Thank you guys, really appreciate the help, going to try a few things this week.
So I will let the pics speak for them selves, I am not happy with the skin tone at the mo, but you get the general idea.
Oh and his rifle....needs a suitable name....

Nice. The rifle is looking awesome.
Can't think of a suitable name myself. I'm no good with making up names, why do you think that my army is led by "The Scientist" and the rest of the army are referred to by number...

Well, Thank you guys.
Thank you all for your suggestions Love them all, going to have a think on it.
So more pictures in a minute, however...... I am thinking of withdrawing from the competition.
This is no longer a piece of playable terrain. and I think that it is unfair to push the limit of the brief to this extent. I am not 100% yet but am seriously thinking about it.
Now these will probably be the last WIP shots of the whole thing, before final posting. I have more details to add yet and am working on several bits and pieces. Also going to go with Red's idea of some graffittiiittii on the blank walls. Probably going to add some flaggy things drapped out windows. Lots of foliage, which will be the last bits just about. Oh and some signs. I will leave you with the pictures and your thoughts are most welcome and indeed very much appreciated.....
Thank you, for looking.
24297
Post by: Viktor von Domm
Nooooooooooo....Withdrawing is not an option mister! My own entry is also more a duo than a playable piece of terrain...and I bet others too. I think from my own clouded point of view, yours is without the shadow of a doubt the winning piece... Without that the then winner still would feel only second place. My opinion: man up to win...
Besides, little tower clearly stated that any entry could be either playable terrain or a diorama...so, for me your not off the hook yet *shakes fist*
26790
Post by: Gitsplitta
Cam... seriously... enter it. Let the judges decide if it's playable or not. It deserves to be seen and considered.
70053
Post by: GrimDork
I've seen several of the pieces in and out of the structure, do any of them still come out or have they been glued in? I'd say it's still playable, just a little odd having all those orks running around mid-game :p But hey, maybe they're civiliorks, just set dressing. It looks soo friggen cool though You've won...something... just by making something so awesome, whether you stay in the competition or not, that's a piece to be proud of!
I agree with Gitsplitta though, enter all the things and let the judges sort it out

Post by: Camkierhi
Well thank you guys for the votes of confidence. I am sure it is far from cut and dry yet, several brilliant entries out there, not as many in total as I would like. I am hoping for some last minute entries. No victory if I am the only one to finish.
OK I am continuing on anyways, so here are some more little bits......
They breed!!!
More stuff.
Oh and a sign!
Thoughts.
Thank you all, really mean it, it makes a big difference.
24297
Post by: Viktor von Domm
oh....yuck!!!...what did you now bring up... are these spores? or worms?...what a cool idea... how were they made?
the sign is epic!...
and speaking of adding stuff on a day to day basis... somehow I am a bit like you... the more I work on my own entry it starts to collect new ideas as I go along... I think this only means how attached one is to his work...so long as you have new fresh ideas that actually have a meaning for the dio then this means you are really still into that build...which is a good thing...and it shows exactly this in each pic you present to us!!!

This is one of my favorite models to watch grow! you have really, really gone way out with it and to such an awesome result! I love the amount of details you have added in as well as the osl and grime, the Orks skin tones (especially the first one with controller) are wickedly good too!! you've made a perfect mix of scenery/terrain/diorama/vignette that should be put somewhere safe for future awesomw inspirations! :-) great stuff dude i'm really impressed!

but that head... now there are a lot of talents wrestling in your head it seems... how on earth could you work in so many fields with often so much hard labour needed since you are indeed a man of the finer arts... ...puzzles me how often peeps let go their talents go to waste and only get to use them after hours...well... we feel better at least to get invited while you show us true dedication!

Firstly.......
And then, problem? I am not sure about this, tried for a pipe sticking out with grotty water coming out, going to have a couple Grots collecting some water for the Baff, but I am crap at this so....
Thoughts please.
62749
Post by: Dr H
Nice sign Cam. I think you've gone too blue with the water for it to look like water. Water only looks blue when you have a lot of it. Stick with the green-y colour you have nearer to the pipe with swirls of lighter/darker shades/colour (like a turquoise). Maybe some brown too. I think washes and glazes are the best way to get the translucent water look. and a gloss finish. Maybe roughen the surface to give it ripples and then dry-brush them with almost white. Just some thoughts. I've not done water on models yet...
26790

Love the signs & such.
I'm not sold on it over-flowing the base. I think it breaks the scene too much that way.

Wow Cam!
This is nice - I really love the new sign
Nice grafitti too.
Now you have to watch not to crowd the scene too much (a problem I run into most of the times).
The water additions...hmmm...not quite...maybe a bit too much.
Looking at the images on the previous page (daylight?) the OSL seems to work out nicely with the fire.
WELL DONE!

Post by: Red Harvest
The water could be greener. Not knowing what you used, I really have no advice.
For a bubbling effect though, Liquitex gloss super heavy gel. I suppose other make it to. Apply it then use a toothpick or pin to shape it. It dries clear and you can paint/ink/wash whatever it.
Here is a photo montage of it in action http://i.imgur.com/SbpYYCb.jpg.
Edited for typos.

@ Red thank you. I will try and get some at some stage, looks brilliant, but at this moment I am trying to do silly things with hotglue guns and it is just not working. Guess thats why they make proper stuff for the job.

I've had a good look through and there's only a couple of things that I can offer advice about:
The rust on the legs of the little Hotel Calif-Orknia sign could do with a bit more attention to make it look less like orange blobs. The rest of your rust looks much better.
And you appear to have some yellow on the metal barrels of your gun. Give the whole model a good look over for those little slips as they make the difference.
As a whole, it's an awesome model. Good job Cam

No. Just no.
I have been a painting judge (maybe I've mentioned that) and have seen thousands of minis and hundreds of display boards. I know crap painting all too well. Your terrain is very well painted. The minis are tabletop quality, a little better than average tabletop quality actually, which is a good place to be unless you want to be a "competition painter" or have something to prove.

You are all very silly.
OK The Hotel won the competition, in case you did not know.
I have been very distracted lately, RL been mucking me about and also I was asked by Gitsplitta to make him a little project.
But now back with avengance, well actually with an idea, here we go....
Bought this in a silly toyshop type place.
Well I can see dune buggy attack craft for my desert dudes, so here we go.....
Remove the surfboard..
Strip it down....
Key the paint, removing decals etc...
Prime leather brown..
So this is where I am at...
Going to add a gun on the top there, driver and co. Stowage on front, bigger bull bar on front, silly exhaust on back, already changed out the front wheels. Going to paint it up a fair bit more yet, started on the interior.
So your thoughts and critique as always are most welcome.

Where is this buggy from?
65595
Post by: Camkierhi
@ Vik you are so right, and see below for a start on this.
@ Monkey. And you too are soo right, but spikes will come later.
@ WP Which one? the new one or the GW type one? The new one is from a silly toyshop on a camp site, however I have found a wholesaler who could sell me 144 at a time?? The GW one is part of a massive purchase I made from Graven, think it's FW, not sure though.
OK pics and off to bed.......
So drilled some holes and made supports/hardpoints for me to attach plastic to.
Glued in, don't think I would have too much success without the hole.
Some hard points on the side for me to mount stuff off.
clean enough underneath.
And with a bit of a stowage rack on.....

Post by: Dr H
Nice work Cam. Good idea with the hard points.

Glad you got rid of the eyeball headlights, now it needs a bar light setup over the windshield, which also needs bulletproofing. Lots of lights and a speaker on the bar too. That way you can dazzle them with brilliance as your riddling them with bullets, and rocking out the sound at the same time.
Also needs whip ariels to be a command and control fast vehicle.
24297
Post by: Viktor von Domm
While I really like the hardpoint idea, this will definitely go straight into my lists of very useful methods for converting....I think the rack up front is too big, I highly doubt that yon driver will be able to steer by sight through the windshield? Tho I do have to say the build looks cool...

Been working (RL) like an idiot struggling to have any thing like my usual mojo for this, but want to see where this goes.
Points I have taken are drivers view, and get rid of the smiley, so here we go .....
First alter interior......The guy is from the sentinal box. Did an enclosed sentinal so body is spare. Will have to do some conversions for the co-driver etc, but this will do for the driver. Raised the seats.
Lowered the front, stowage rack, (actually lowering this furrther as we speak) Needs lowered a bit further. Now sanding it down and shaping it a bit.
Hope the bar on the front is a start at loosing the smiley.
Question for you......exhaust, horizontal or vertical. (its a bit big at mo but you get the idea.
Thank you guys. Welcome to the new guys and please all keep it coming.

Post by: Red Harvest
Good progress. Hope you have something planned for those wheels.
24297
Post by: Viktor von Domm
hmmm... for the exhaust I think the horizontal version is the one you should go for...after all these are desert rats... on any other setting I would go for the vertical one as it would allow small drives through shallow water...
also... do you need a further sentinel pilot? I could send you one... I still have a spare one...
also... if you are for bitz hunting I would suggest looking at the legs of taurox drivers...
as for your work issue... I really hope you soon get rid of these long working hours... you may be sure I am crossing my fingers for you here... Automatically Appended Next Post: oh...also... the interior looks already cool... as if it is velvet seats...

Post by: monkeytroll
I like the idea of twin vertical exhausts, or possibly angled back slightly...but if I'm being totally honest I have to admit that's just the mek in me speaking...I think the horizontal look is the one to go for here.
Nice work so far.
70053
Post by: GrimDork
Knowing little about the mechanics of vehicles, I would say the horizontal is more aesthetically appealing to me. This is shaping up nicely.
30672
Post by: Theophony
Normally I would say vertical, but with speed I think good all around view is needed so I vote horizontal.
62749
Post by: Dr H
Good work Cam.
If that's the exhaust you plan to use, I say horizontal. It looks a bit too tall for vertical.
If you're open to other ideas, try plugging in "bug exhaust" into google (or your favourite internet search engine), there's plenty of possibilities...
34329
Post by: dantay_xv
I woul have said vertical, purely for the practicality of taking it off road, if the exhaust got coverd by water/swamp/ sand, then the engine would stall out.
But rule of cool trumps everything, so go with what you like most

Post by: Camkierhi
Thank you guys, still debating the exhausts.
Did finally get some time to do some work.

Thanks guys,
@ Vik more parts from that 1:48 scale Supacat Coyote. They just seem perfect.
@ Red Not done any yet, got to do some at some point but my time is sparce at the moment.
So Update, just a little.....Theo it's your fault, (anyone notice that happens alot.)
Winch for front end.....
Rough positioning..
And she's on....
Also getting a million different washes to look dirty and dusty and generally lived in.
Question, wheels? Go with the one of the different sets I have tried so far, or order up some zinge wheels that would probably better fit size wise.
Next I think I need to work on the crew. That will be much later probably, thanks for looking in.
24297
Post by: Viktor von Domm
I like that winch and cable and the hook detail... but how long will the cable stay?
and thanks for the explanation of the bit for the bumper!
as for the wheel issue.... well my OCD would say that both wheels would need the same profil... mixed ones just make me feel weird^^...
30344
Post by: monkeytroll
I think the protuding cable on the winch needs to be a tad shorter...other than that it's looking great!
Hmmm....think some zinge wheels would look ace on there....and you know you want a few other little things from their catalogue whilst you're there

Great winch. Also looks like it could double as one of those old fashioned clothing dryers...wringers they were called? Useful for drying the garments after washing the blood and gore from them
Any way to get a more 'steel cable' look to the winch cable? They all have that woven/braided/twisted look to them. Or will you paint that on?

Thank you guys,
Sorry not much of an update. Just for you Vik, here is the rouges gallery, hope these shots help.
And the one I hope you wanted...
I chopped the legs off at the hip, shaved the joint, and stuck them back. The waist got a slither of PC 2mm at the back and 0 at the front to help the back line up better. GS to taste.
Obviously turned a few wrists on these guys too, and one arm is made from 3, but thats the easy bits right?
Will hopefully have a bit more tomorrow, got me wheels in the post today, not had chance yet though.
Thanks for looking in.

Thank you all, you are too kind.
So trying to decide whats next, so pulled an old one off the shelf of shame, and did a bit this evening.
Did not like the feet I had on it, (points to the first to guess which shameful model it is for, have to go back a fair ways.) Not even sure the model is still legal/relavant. soo.....
New shoes! well kinda....
Started by cutting and gluing some square tubing to a piece of PC.
Bent and cut some rod.
Glued in to make toes.
Need 2.
Time to stick it to the base.
Inserted a pin, and dry fit of the big guy on his new shoes.

oh... these new feet look very good... and mean... but that´s of course the point for that chaosy warmachine...
wanted to add why I like your buggy...
the last additions look very good... the binder held tank for instance... or the shoulder slung lasgun...
I have to say the skin tones look very good...a very convincing hue all over...
after seeing the presentation pics tho I have to add one thing...the driver has way longer legs than midget steve on the passenger´s seat... he looks a wee ( ) bit comically with his stubbly legs all stretched out still only on the seat... I think his feet should have been resting on the floor of the buggy too... just as the driver does...we really need more sitting legs for all our scratch built drivers... GW do you hear me? !!!

Thanks as always,
@ Shas Indeed thank you.
@ Red and Dr H, Yes I am interested to see what the heck I do as well, Bought with the intent of saving me on making track assembly and such things. Personal use only really, though I suppose if anyone asked me nicely once I have anything I will let them have, at the moment cutting a hundred individual links and detailing puts me off many projects, however I have seen Klaus use it very effectively and what seems to be quickly to make bogies and links. Also some of my guns I tend to make up, I may try and cast up.
Wish me luck, just got to get the courage up to have a go.
@ Grim Thank you, it was originally meant to be a Decimator Daemon Engine. Me son asked for one, but the FW model is like OMG expensive, so made this. Similar size, and the best I can manage on the weapons. Probably never see battle. The weapons are a seige claw thingy, with a built in flamer, and a butcher cannon. Both are wonderful stat's and do lots of damage, in theory.
So what I been doing, well just bumming around really, made this up, maybe just terrain maybe a base for something not sure.
Thanks for looking in, please feel free to comment.

was that an underside of a toy car?... clever... using the junk that has no "real face" to it for ruined terrain!
and I wanna see you get into casting too... not only to later on maybe ask you nicely... but rather to see someone stepping boldly where I would like to go one of these days (make that read years) ...
62749
Post by: Dr H
Good use of the car part on the terrain/base.
Good luck with the casting. Make sure you have everything you could possibly need before starting, as you don't want to be searching for something while the stuff cures. Start small / simple / easy and don't try to do too many moulds/casts in one go, as you may just end up with a nice cast of the bottom of your mixing pot (like I have from my first attempt).
My casting materials have arrived today, so I'm now staring at my things laid out on the table...

but I am with the others... your take on the spiral staircase looks excellent but it appears still a bit hobbit style...a bit more spaced out and you are truly golden....(depends of course on what sinister use you have planned this piece to be for... )

That painting is indeed very well done. The frame, tongue depressors? I've actually been wondering how doing something like that might look. Now I know. Thanks.
it looks like you have the faux marble technique nailed down. Very impressive. I believe that I have tried that technique (one of them anyway). It takes some patience. I'm glad to see you've mastered it. But not surprised
The spiral stairs... Hmmm, love the idea (of course). It looks like you may have one coil too many. Due to the width of the risers? Are you going to clean up the edges of the risers? They look ragged. And is a handrail/bannister forthcoming? I know, I know, too many questions.
Edit: added a bit to first paragraph.

@ Vik. Thank you master. I have missed you. Indeed Sir Bob was the inspiration. Might yet do a couple more, just for kicks. And see below on the stair situation.
@ Red Thank you, coffee stirrers, 45 degree mitres. Painted on card. I promise I will do a bit on my take on the marble. Littletower has a piece in person so best ask him if it's any good really. And again the stairs below....
@ Graven, Panda and Gits thank you gentle peeps you are far too kind.
Well where is this going?
Originally it was meant to be a small piece, I wanted to use one of Dr H's bathrooms, and I had a picture in my head of a ruined house, hardly anything left, a sniper and spotter perched in the ruins of the exposed bathroom, with an unknown assassin below creeping up on them.
It has got a bit bigger than intended, and I am not sure whether to go dio or terrain piece, I may put the figures in but make them removable. Thoughts gratefully recieved.
For now though, firstly I took on board what you all said about the stairs, and here you go see what you think....they are in the process of weathering and I chucked in Johnny guardsman for scale. It is just over 3" (80mm) between floors. to give the impression of stately home.
This is where the bathroom will be...
And can you guess what this is?......(two raised floor boards...)
It's a light switch.......
Thank you all and thank you for looking in, please keep the comments coming....

Oh good god he has become an electrician. I have a cousin in law whose husband has an amazing out house with a light switch concealed beneath the floor boards.
I like the idea of removable figures, anything that makes such an amazing piece of work multipurpose has go to be the way to go?

Did you put a working LED in that? That's nice.
Does it flicker?

I do have in front of me a slab of true Camkierhi marble, and
I can certainly vouch for it!
(Sorry, Cam, but you will have to do a tut now!)

i think your next one needs a happy lil cloud then
the lighted terrain piece/ diorama is developing into pure stunningness!
and the handle bar to the staircase is the needed addition that brings this detail into reality!
it is also not the second time you did marble... remember everyone the "not worthy " comp entry?... there you did weathered marble too... you really have a knack for this!
to answer the question...well... it will essentially be a dio... but it is meant to be played with... so terrain piece too... heck... why label it
removable models I think nevertheless are a good decision!
also... I would like to see the "innards" of your electricity works here... I am about to reveal my own work on the current project and it is vast and wide... well it has 20 lights (only 19 shown...) but it has costed me quite a nerve...I like that you actually managed to conceal the switch with a detail that even works ...very sneaky...

Vik, I had to do a double take when I read 'handlebar'. That, generally refers to bicycles. Bannister, or hand-rail for stairs. Forgive the correction. There is also a handlebar moustache, but that's sort of OT
Lights. It's about time you guys started using them.
The stairs are much improved. Good job.
I second Vik's request to see the wiring.

Hand rail... well I'll draw the stupid foreigner card for this one...
And please..
No one feel the need to ruin cam's thread with pics of handlebar moustaches....

Post by: shasolenzabi
But the handle bar moustaches are wild. I just don't care to grow one that is big enough to wax it like that.
But Cam last year was all thinking he was not that good, and yet here he is! now making all sorts of well made and painted projects!

Thanks I will sort out some pics of how I did the wiring.
Here is the tut on marble.
Like I have said, I am no expert and others have done much better than me before now. This works for me...
Hope it helps and any questions please ask.
Hope to get some stuff done tonight so more later on.

Interesting tutorial. Saved for later. Bathroom is looking great together, and painted, and in a room. How were the pieces to work with? and I love the scum ring around the bath. and I like the addition of the shower.

So, I'm forbidden from posting a sellfie then? Hmm, well it's not a handlebar moustache anyway. Too much maintenance.
And no "stupid foreigner card" Vik. This is an international forum. There are no foreigners here. Native English speakers make diction choices like that all the time. We have too many words.
Excellent tutorial. I love seeing those things. As a suggestion, you can also 'float' the layers of veining using a gloss acrylic glazing liquid, or glazing compound.
Everything looks great. The shower head, nice touch. Perhaps some sort of curtain rod? The ring sort?

Good to hear.
Yeah, they were always going to be fiddly because of the scale. Although they are easier to clean up than carve from scratch.
Additions are looking great. Nice work.

Quiet whipping voice: yes baby, when we get all the way out of this bag were going to find who did this to us and make them pay. Yes. Pay in spades. No one puts me and baby in a bag and gets away with it. NO ONE. What's that baby? You think his name was Theo......yeah, when were done with him he'll wish he used a pine box instead of a bag. Rest now baby. The hunt begins.
Looks great with the pose, he just makes me think of a crazed sniper whispering the sweet nothing to his rifle. The cloak will look great once painted all camoish.

Have you seen the gili suit tuts floating around on dakka? I think it might add some bang to your model. It is also a very easy sculpt to preform.

Thanks Panda I will investigate...
So I know it has some primer on but that does not mean I can't ad more.
Tried the dental plaster......
It is brilliant, fast set and hard as heck. Got to make it a bit "thinner" / sloppier next time. Followed the instruction, but had to press the stuff into the moulds.
Also waiting on this lot!! We will see...
Thanks for looking in.

Tried to make a rubber stamp, with mixed success.

You could try adding some birch seeds to the sniper teams cloaks, the cloaks look great as they are otherwise.

mister... I just showed my wife your paintings...and your failed (joke) home improvement project....(only ever a fiew models happen to get shown to her every now and then...)
she liked the more warmer, sunset scenes of course... and the staircase has won her over too....(you´ve won me over long ago.... )
the tut looks amazing.... and I have eyed up some special brushes quite some long time.... this sweeper brush and then some of these flat spaced out brushes are quite interesting.... ever stumbled on a bent brush?... I might need to take a pic of that one for you....
with all these cool framed pics.... I think a theme for your not ruined building needs to be said art gallery....there is little choice for you there
also... did you sculpt the sleeping bags before choosing the bitz to make the snipers?...what a cool idea to get different poses.... cutting off legs and then making a lying sniper.... I need to remember that idea... brilliant work....if I wouldn´t knew your first name already I'd say you must be called arty

Thank you guys
Pics are props really, but a bit of fun anyways.
Here is some work on the sniper, with a question, what do we think of the camo? Does it need Birch leaves? I was all set to do that as OMN had suggested, but got to this stange and not 100% sure.
He is still very much WIP at this stage, just thought I woud get an opinion on the camo...
Thanks again guys.
62749
Post by: Dr H
For that type of camo' I would say "no" to the added leaves. I think leaves would go better with a more natural camo' scheme, rather than the geometric shape camo' you have there. (not that I'm an expert or anything).
Nice camo' scheme.

Nice job on the sniper really like the camo work.
I think I might give the marble look a try here shortly, I have an interesting idea for it.

Post by: Viktor von Domm
I am with the doc on the camo... the digi camo doesn´t need any leaves....also I like that the sniper has these eyemarks for blocking out the sun....that is a very good idea!!!

Post by: OneManNoodles
Please ignore my suggestion, as Vik and the good Dr say it would ruin the effect.
Some sort of desert ruin for him to hide in?

Dude I've been like 3 pages behind and I am gobsmacked and astounded at what you've done lately! you truly are a skill set above most when doing terrain magic! if only you had a spare Ork plane you could 'crash' into a building one day!? a dazed Ork being flung from the cockpit would be cool as!
I really love how you have washed the bar wooden beams, they really look real and aged!
