I am looking at giving scratch building a go. And who better to ask than the leauge. Do you guys have any ideas on a small progect that could get me started? Im far too good at thinking up LARGE scale things.
Cheers.. proto
A little more info would help what kind of thing you into (keep it clean now) what materials are you looking or thinking of using, what do you have to work with.
Give us a little background knowledge and I am sure we can point you in the right direction
Ok I am a marine player. I really like the steampunk/cyberpunk stuff around here. I want to get into =I= munda. Inspired by all of the awesome stuff done around here. Materials wise I have plasticard, and can get anything else I may need. Im on the look out for some rods ATM so I can make rivets etc.
Yes, try something simple not a large project, this way you can get used to working with different materials and if it goes wrong (which something will ) it will not cost you to much.
Plus you will get better with practice and don't be afraid to ask any one for help or advice, and check out the net for hints and tutorials there are loads out there.
But most of all just have fun with it
I like the dreadnought idea or steam punk up a rhino, both are small enough and blocky to work with easily.
I have a lot less 1/2 finished projects on deck right now, and very few of them need rivets. However, I may make another pledge attempt to join the LoER. I have a lot of new ideas and they all will need rivets to complete the look I am going for. Will re-read the whole "how do I make rivets" part of this thread becasue it's been covered more than once.
Hmm. Maybe a senior LoER officer should post a rivets tut?
@LDD- the yard is cleaned up finally- now I need to get this damn diorama done and a few other "have to's" out of the way- then I don't know..I need motivation or a fire under my ass
max wanted to make such an article ... i think he said he was already halfway through the basic outline of such a thing... tho inbetween all his chicken construction i fully understand that he is a bit preoccupied

well, glad you've got it finished dude, if not for your sanity (what little there is left). Now enough of this vac formed GAK when are we going to see more Necromunda terrain or even a 4 legged steampunk walker??? *crackswhipcozyourkinkylikethat*
hell yes dave! that is looking quite good actually ... like the package suggested^^ wich the content didn´t really hold up to... but i dont think it is really mediocre... so you still owe us such a job
Automatically Appended Next Post: and where is now the overgrown vine and such things?
Yes you turned gak into a pretty dam fine diorama piece (although it still needs debris ) good job but no way does it qualify as mediocre I stand with Vik on this
I like the plaster walls sections was that just washes or some other technique
@Childe- you don't get to ask for any more projects until you finish 1 thing
@Vik- Yes I painted it just how I interpreted the box photo (there were no painting suggestions)- and yes, this is as mediocre as I'm ever going to get. You bitched repatatively that you didn't like the overgrown idea
@LDD- buy the kit and add your own debris if you want it -I don't understand your question about plaster?

Ok, complete derail of this thread, but I don't know where else to share this. What I am about to show you is 100% real, there's no photoshop or any other alteration of the photos other than I edited them to fit together into one image for comparative purposes.
You've all come to know and love me as the mighty Skalk Bloodaxe, self-appointed Chaos Lord and scourge of the Imperium. IRL I work in a technical field and I'm somewhat of a spaz when it comes to security, especially old devices that I am removing from use.
Today I decided to officially "retire" my old Samsung cell phone. In keeping with tradition I tore the device apart to retrieve and completely destroy the important bitz so I could satisfy my barely managed borderline OCD conspiracy theory paranoia. Imagine my surprise when I found THIS:
THe ruin looks great, Dave! I would say you've done it justice, but that would really be an insult to how good you've made it look Far from 'mediocre', at any rate!
Any plans on what you're up to next?
As to Skalk's find - I was going to say that the Inquisition would never be so unsubtle in their surveillance, but then I though about the armour that =I= members wear Great find - any plans on what to do with it? Other than maybe clearing your house of any demonic artifacts before someone shows up...
Well the joke is on them then. The last time I used that phone I was still in Segmentum Obscurus and it was deactivated and partially dissembled before I returned to Terra. And my new phone was invented by the Tau so no worries there.

Miniart has released a huge number of diorama and scenic kits, designed with the scratchbuilder and kitbasher in mind. This kit is a simple unreinforced brick building ruin, suitable for almost any era or location in the world that has used this type of construction technique.
This kit consists of 35 parts, including a vacu-formed base measuring 238x170mm, one sheet of vacu-formed walls, and one sprue of injection-molded styrene accessories (the accessory sprue seems to be the compulsory treat included in all Miniart kits), and a one-page, double-sided instruction sheet.
The vacu-formed walls are two-parts each that need cut out of the sheet and joined together along the length of the brick walls, however the fit of these wall parts is atrocious. Huge gaps are evident immediately, and brick and mortar lines do not match up. This required me to use almost an entire tube of Squadron green Putty to make it presentable, and then once the putty was dry, I had to file and sand the brick lines back into place. This is a lot of work for such a simple kit, so because of the required filling and filing/sanding I could not recommend this kit to anyone but an experienced modeler.
With the exception of the walls, the detail in the vacu-formed parts is very well done. I wanted my ruin to have more of a bombed-out industrial building look, so instead of using the parts on the injection-molded styrene sprue representing wooden residential windows and doors, I made my own door jambs and window frames from strip styrene, and used some clipped ¼" square chicken wire for window frames.
I primed the entire ruin with flat black rattle-can primer, and painted it with a mix of Vallejo, Polly-S, and Citadel acrylic paints and Secret Weapon washes, and Didi's Magic inks.
Many thanks go to MRC and IPMS-USA for the sample kit.
...And then the pics scroller thing at the bottom of the page....
well as i stated... you could have justified used a quite more negative tone for that one... i mena... where is the point to pay around over 30 bucks for such a kit and then have to file back in the brickworks on the top of the walls? if it were for a cheapo kit from the poundshop i would call it a fair bargain... but 30 bucks are not cheap really...
at first i would have thought of stephen king... but that B&W movie... ? what is that suppposed to be? sorry mate... i guess it is an educational gap again^^
Not that I remember them all specifically, but it was interesting when one of the zombies picked up a handgun and started learning how to use it; different movie but same series.
Personally, I think Romero is a little over rated... I like my horror Japanese (Ringu, The grudge, The eye etc.) or 80's style... (Hellraiser, John Carpenters the Thing etc.)
hmmm... i only recently found my way to zombie movies... so that might have to be taken into account too... and as i am atm the only one at home i wint rent any movies because renting a movie and watching it alone is crap... you need a juicy pizza and a coke to go with a good movie... tho i think...tasty food and zombie movies might be a challenge^^
sidequestion: does anyone know where to downlad the DLC stuff of new vegas? i only yesterday went to my tech shop and they had the "only" new vegas game for a tenner... i might get that one through the wife radar...^^ but i wouldn´t want to start the game without said DLC...
and ...for the record... looks promising dave... what will it be...now spill the beans...:

People are allowed opinions you know Anyways, sure the Beatles were influential, but they are over-rated. There is more to music than the Beatles or the Rolling stones... for eg, Imelda may, Dionne warrick, Nina Simone, The Kinks, Bill Hayley and the comets, Elvis Presley, Oasis, Nine inch Nails, Frankie goes to hollywood, and so on and so forth.
The point is, music was around before the Beatles, and better bands had a bigger impact than they did as well. Just because the Beatles and Romero define music and Zombie horror for you doesn't mean it should for everyone else. I've grown up on a steady diet of everything, and as such I view things differently than the herd.
Also, you can't compare social phenomena such as music and cinema to an event like the Apollo missions...

hahaha, that is what I dont miss about being with someone tbh... I like to be able to choose what I watch the few times i'm in the mood for it in fairness. So I feel your pain... and I shall mock you
A band that influenced every single band/artist that you listed (including Elvis-yes look it up) is not overrated. A director whose film influenced all other horror films since cannot be called overrated. This is not a matter of opinion, it's historical fact, since without A, there never would have been a B, or C.
No one is saying you personally have to like them, or your opinion is wrong. I am saying that they are fundamental influences into everything that you do love, and therefore cannot be discounted as "overrated" since they influenced everything since.
Opinions and tastes are not in question here. Quit trying to spin the discussion to become something it is not. This is a logical fallacy.
Had you simply stated your opinion as your opinion- that would have been a different story.
"I don't like Marines"- is my opinion, but I cannot say "Marines are overrated" because without the Space Marines I would not have my beloved Guard.
The real fight is the slow zombie vs fast "zombie" camps anyway.
Personally I think the zombie should indeed reflect its current state of decomposition, though with rigor mortis at least they'd start shambling probably quickly. Then again that's taking it all a little too seriously and like Return of The Living Dead has shown seriousness is not required when it comes to zombies.
ok, so how is it that we rationalize that the speed at which reanimated dead flesh has a direct relation to the decomposition of that dead flesh, yet we accept that skeleton warriors just move?...They have no muscles to move the bones? lol
I usually stick doctor who on tbh... but I have to wait until august for it this year :(

@ Dstein- Didn't MadMarty have some iron fences a while back (meaning many months ago, I'm still trying to remember that my most recent memories of Dakka are everyone elses ancient history). Where did you get those?
Wait. Don't answer that. I don't need any. I don't.

My favourite is and always will be Matt Smith and Tom Baker. Tom baker is quintessentially the doctor, from his scarf to the jelly baby fetish he seemed to have. But Matt Smith has taken a lot of his predecessors mannerisms on board, most of which were Patrick Troughton's. who was not only quirky but lovable and insane lols. I especially love the fact with Matt Smiths scripts they seem to have tipped their proverbial hat a lot to Troughton, especially In "closing time"
Just the first post of that thread looks promising Skalk, I'll have to check it out later too. Lot s to do before the weekend!
I wanted to touch on the Zombie theme for a minute. I don't actually belive the Zombies will be slow at all, or dead for that matter. The dead coming back to life was always a bit hard for me to swallow. However, that doesn't mean they couldn't be BRAIN dead! I think with all of the contagions and super bugs and methods for making super soldiers that I'm sure the Governments (that's right, plural) are working on, there are any number of scenarios where "Something Goes Wrong" and the Super Soldier Syrum is mixed with a Super Flu, and you get super strong, super fast, hyper agressive, brain dead cannibals that can spread thier condition by contact with their saliva. (They would be brain dead because the super flu gave them a fever that got so high, it damaged their brains)
There might be some of these monsters that have been physically damaged, or the super syrum has worn off, and they can hardly move. These might be more like the drooling slow-moving "shamblers". And why in movies are animals hardly ever affected? The only ones I can think of that show animal zombies is the Resident Evil ones.
Just my two cents.
But my version actually scares the crap out of me, and I think it could happen at any time. I need to go to the Sproting Goods store this weekend!
There was a show on the History or Science Channel about that very thing..They say a purposely-manufactured Prion could actually cause that very thing Jake...stranger than fiction I tell ya!
Just because you're paranoid doesn't mean nobody is after you.
Bat, no. But I have a Machete in my car and two at home. I'm a Land Surveyor by trade, and we need them to hack through the brush. By now I am very proficient with a machete! Check.
Pistols, Check.
Shotguns, Check.
Scoped Rifles, Check.
Survival equipment, Check, but I can always use more.
Well, I'm outta here for the long weekend. I'll see you all in about 6 or 7 pages!

will you add rivets to the aquilla too...? could look quite good too... and yes... a serious lack of rivets i have felt in my life recently... seems i need to scratchbuilt soon something... but for now i still have my painting mojo... if that runs out i think building something will happen!
well i can only encourage you on this one... i bet it will look very good... maybe this even calls for a different aproach? you could do some glue rivets? like shaso does? either with PVA or super glue... just slightly raised areas... later on to be drybrished for highlights...
I like the look of the fence with the aquilla works great and the riveted panels was a nice touch, I did not mean to sell them but that they were that good you could

hmm, i personaly love the way one big base looks, but i think the linear type might work better for actual gaming, plus if your picky and dont want your fence on grass (example of course) to be in the middle of your concrete, you wont half to
I'd vote linear, but enough support to be free-standing. If you build a big base, then you'll need to scenik that big base, and you'll end up building some sort of Imperial Graveyard, with Aquila headstones and that giant Space Marine statue in the center, except you'll covert it to be a working water fountain.
What started and never finished I did paint a fantasy building once turned out pretty good I thought god knows where that is now,I even painted bird poo on the roof

here is a thought that poped up in my mind... if possible... magnetize the fence at the bottom... thus you could do swapable bases... for different terrain? sounds too expensive? would give you plenty of options tho...
combination looks quite good dave! well if it is as seen... then i think you should do a big base for everything... at least what we currently see... after that other segments in whatever size you might need...
How about I build it simple and linear corner peices for the purposes of the review..then later, I can "liberate these parts easier for greater manor house, or castle project????
remember, time is of the essense here...

Well the Necrons needed the Scythes as they are standard codex stuff. the SM flyer was needed as they didnt have one (only blood angels and grey knights have them so far), Orks didn't have standard dex fliers either. IG have the Valkyrie and the Vendetta so quit ya moaning
The SM Looks cool and all like a mini Stormbird and quite pre heresy imo... So I'll be buying one to rivet up and pre-heresy-fy it
They do look pretty doable, though if you put soil onto them they may look a little buried in. Sort of adds to a wet/muddy appearance as the still "living" zombies could trample the parts of the more dead ones as they march on. I wonder if people have thought to do it with DKoK as I'd expect the same of them a bit.
my sculpting for humans needs work, but I could try... but Ihonestly don't mind saving time buying their bases, as to me they are dirt cheap.
n0t_u, the point of the "corpse fields" bases is to use wet effect for blood or water to fill the different. the blasted wetlands bases use the same idea. which reminds me, i need to order some wet effect next weekend
No need to sculpt them if you can get a hold of a box of zombies cheap enough. Cut them right and you could get them sunk in and two uses out of most parts.
n0t_u wrote:No need to sculpt them if you can get a hold of a box of zombies cheap enough. Cut them right and you could get them sunk in and two uses out of most parts.
Sorry dude, I would never do that, as for bases, I'll either go the whole hog and sculpt them myself, or buy them.

Six people working together (Captain, Helm, Tactical, Science, Communications, Engineering) to fly a ship. And each position is equally important!
PS: THIS WAS POST 1111 for me. I'm going to DRINK, HEAVILY.
And who is this jake man?! Thats really cool stuff he has made. Amazed, but not entirely surprised dakka has the capability to encourage things like that to be made and shared
hey dave... sorry to have let everybody down a bit...family and an enlarged yet again weekend took it´s toll...and my right eye got all mushy over the weekend too... so a tear is these days always stuck in my eye too...(no pun)
the fence looks really well...the added ivy looks very cool...the last wash brought the details out a treat... with the grass flockings this piece declared to be a quick job nevertheless looks awesome!
and then the GS workshop... that is something you really need to do! try to get some work on weapon details and such things... i bet if you can master this the sky is the very limit!
and wow... seeing jakes stuff in your paws i am really edgy when on the gods forsaken world the postman will turn up with my package too... i bet i still have two week more time to wait this glorious day... he even got you his selfmade boilers? how cool is that?...brilliant!
and i thought if vader was a guitar man...i thought he would rather play leadguitar than bass... well^^
i step out for two weeks and all this awesome happens what the hell? any rate great to see your fence done. though i was a tad confused by your thread name it said mega man and i thought you got a model of mega man to do. teaches me not to get my hopes up. guys in the us hope you had a good memorail day weekend vik and others hope you had a great monday.
and as of tomorrow im heading back to my sludge pit.
true but with out little gems like dakka beer and the ocasional stripper lifes kinda boring. and there is no sex in the champaign room. *nods matter of factly* but the biggest problem is the lack of funds and a craptastic economy i dont know hows is going but ours still sucks.
As Daves thread seems to be the place to ask questions lols, here goes...
Does anyone have, or know of any examples of how to sculpt capes? tis something I'm considering for my pre heresy tru-scale Chapter-master I'm going to build ^_^
I cannot begin to explain how fething awesome it was to open this box! All 100% Jake-Made stuff!
To see these steampunk weapons and boilers here on my bench after watching them go from suggestion to idea to reality right here on Dakka....This is just the greatest feeling ever!
The Heads are an awesome bonus I wasn't expecting!
...But the coolest thing ever in the entire world are these Nuka Cola bottles and caps!!-
THIS RIGHT HERE..is what Dakka, and the P&M blogs, -=]_,=- and all of the silliness and OT stuff is all about, like-minded, talented people, talking about ideas, and making them happen!! This is why we are all here!
Jake..you are a completely badass person, an amazing sculptor, and a great friend...Thank you for the bottom of my heart man!
Dave, your amazing comment choked me up a bit. I almost heard patriotic music in the background too...(actually, it was Stevie Ray Vaughn, so, pretty close.) You my friend are also very much the awesome one! A lot of my products, the bottles for instance, are a direct result of your amazing work. If you hadn't made the Nukka Machine, would I have ever even attempted the bottles? The answer is no.
If El Vik, and the -=]_,=- hadn't been interested in Steampunk Weapons, would I have made them? No.
So thank you, and thank everyone in the -=]_,=-, and everyone who follows the -=]_,=-'s insane ramblings.
I'm really glad you like the stuff. Now, in the next few minutes, I'll have an update on my blog with pics! I know you'll like some of them!
And later, I have to catch on this blog, it may take a while.
sounds like you three have a conspiracy in the making. oh yea i got a tad bit more done on my sludge pit so go me go i really should go get more work done on that thing well, i am off to go take care of that. i'll be on later to show my progress and what not until then have a good afternoon. and if you were wondering my appt went really well clean bill of health so no more excuses of putting the awesome off.
last time i had a spelling mistake in the title of my thread... if you typed that word...i tried to spell "swelled" and failed... then you could see all my pics of my thread...it was most hillarious^^
So thank you, and thank everyone in the -=]_,=-, and everyone who follows the -=]_,=-'s insane ramblings.
I would, but the warranty expired on my Flux Capacitor
I just finished ALL 5 of my outstanding reviews for IPMS-USA finally today. I wrote up my review of Sci Fi and Fantasy Modeller Vol. 25 and submitted it. I have some breathing room now, until that big-assed submarine kit arrives of course
