Yeah, I don't like to see myself without "the Goat" (as my 3 year old calls it) either.
US Army does not allow (at least when I was in, who knows what going on now.) facial hair aside from a moustache, and even then, very regulated. I have shaved it ONE TIME since I got out in 1997. That was for Holloween one year, I wanted to be Frankenstein, Frank doesn't have a goat. So I shaved it. The only cool part was that NO ONE knew who I was. The bad part was the 2 months it took to come back in properly.
Never again.

Awesome stuff, Dave! looks like we have over 4 people on dakka who have steampunk walkers, now! we should start a steampunk club, or something (lol, my new avatar shows a defunct idea for steampunk goggles: i couldn't get a working strap! one of them is now a monocle for a steampunk top hat, though.)
Interesting news for the league; I recently found a way to make rivets for models that involves an actual hammer! Is anyone interested in hearing this technique? it involves Dave's riveting tube idea, but eschews the sharpening with sandpaper.

Post by: glomscient
Ok; here's how it works:
tools; metal tube (inside diameter = that of desired rivets), hammer, plasticard, thin, long tool (i used copper wire)
process:
step 1: position tube on the plasticard, like one would a nail
step 2: give the top of the tube a good whack with the hammer (also like one would a nail: be careful not to bend the tube!)
step 3: remove rivet with thin tool (or just pop the rivet out, if you perforated it instead of going right through, which also works)
step 4: repeat until enough rivets are produced.
That's how I just started doing it, because those tools are readily available to me (i got the metal tube from a radio antenna), and because i felt like trying it
32169

Lols Vik, as I said before, due the the nature of FW's casting process its the nature of the beast. it's going to happen as that is how pressure cast resin goes.

well from an intelectual point of view i see your point... but the inner monkey grabs his club and wants to smash someone/something if i have an empty wallet and an ill fitting kit... there is little room for reason then^^

Aye, the casting process isn't infallible, but you'd think for the price that you pay they wouldn't send you the bloody miscasts! I've had some bad experiences with FW stuff, but at least their customer service is ace, so can't really complain
53821
Post by: AnUnearthlyChilde
Yeah I'm with scarper on this tbh, I've had miscasts and kits that wouldnt come clean of their release agent, and they have quite happily sent out new ones as replacements. no matter how much the model cost. the most amusing time was when an order didnt arrive... they sent out a replacement, and then the original came too

ok... just uplaoded the "plans"
sorry max and shaso... and of course our metric alergic dave here but it is all done in mm than in inches fine for me but probably a bit crappy for the lot of you^^

MM's don't phase me none. I have a very nice scale ruler to convert for me.....
44814

man thats one crazy guy on that thread neat stuff though.
vik good luck building that if you do
2326
Post by: shasolenzabi
Nah, I has metrics on my tape measurer.
53821
Post by: AnUnearthlyChilde
MM's are superior when doing something exact, but back to the lasgun... I like the stuff that guy has built, but, his detailing is shoddy, and there has been no inroads into making it "real" as opposed to them looking toy-like...
24297
Post by: Viktor von Domm
i bet you two would have such tools...^^
and well alabama... i feel an itch to make at least one of these... argh^^ Automatically Appended Next Post: aye childe... the design lacks a bit in the detail department... but if i would do it it would be a plasticcard thingy and then it would look better i assume^^

cuase it will have rivets on it vik. blah all this talk of making stuff has made me get off my lazy ass to go do more stuff ill talk with yall later.
53821
Post by: AnUnearthlyChilde
Agreed Vik, plasticard is infinitely better, and you can still get the weight of metal with it too, plus you can always clad it in thin sheet metal too.
48594
Post by: dsteingass
Imperial Lasguns are cheap, reliable stamped weapons, which do not have to be produced on an admech forge world (see the Imperial Infantryman's upliftimg primer for my source)- Like a Chinese AK-47 they don't need any more detail than that, because none exists Automatically Appended Next Post: ..>With the exception of the nalwood stocks on those produced on Tanith of course
53821
Post by: AnUnearthlyChilde
Actually they have regulating gauges as well as power output/imput ports. plus odd switches here and there...
48594
Post by: dsteingass
no, they have a auto fire selector and a power readout for the power cell, that is it. There is no input/output- you're thinking of a hellgun.
53821
Post by: AnUnearthlyChilde
well the ikkle plastic ones that the guardsmen have, have more detail on them than that replica above lols
48594
Post by: dsteingass
I can take a picture of about 400 of them in my bitz box- several different patterns even that disagree with you.

meh, give me a Phobos pattern Bolter any day over the silly flashlight

53821
Post by: AnUnearthlyChilde
Actually, does anyone have the true-scale measurements for a Boltgun???
46192

No, but I am building a Halo gun with the chain saw for my son from a nerf gun... I can show you that if it helps?
53821
Post by: AnUnearthlyChilde
yeah, any help would be awesome Max
24297
Post by: Viktor von Domm
not currently childe...i made a self made attempt earlier on... from wood... but never finished it...to be seen in my gallery... tho i would be damend if i knew where it is^^
2326
Post by: shasolenzabi
The las-gun does have a 100shot power-clip magazine. the bolter, has 24 bolts in it.
53821
Post by: AnUnearthlyChilde
the lasgun may have 100 flashes of its torch, but the 20 rounds which a boltgun kicks out can decimate several targets at once due to its secondary split-second-before-impact charge.
2326
Post by: shasolenzabi
Yeah, the armor piercing/high explosive, heat and moisture sensors make it a nasty bolt!
Lasgun will cauterize the wound.

ohoh... i see a SM hate reaction coming up... and for my own thoughst... SM...all good and well... but true heros are those that battle odds so high that tackling them turns out a loss most of the time... a SM is way too winning to be considred a hero for my liking.... whereas a guardsman that still fights regardless the odds...that is heroism... so a SM gun is less because it can do more... and an IG torchligh is better because it is essential gakky... strange logic... but the more you think about it you WANT to JOIN MY point of view! period!
53821
Post by: AnUnearthlyChilde
Hey, I only mentioned Bolters, Guardsmen have access to them too lols...
but in that argument Vik, 10 space marines make planetfall, and can bring an entire world back into the imperial fold, but it takes countless guardsmens lives to do the same task. Thats not heroism, thats suicide
48594
Post by: dsteingass
10 marines may take a world, but they can't hold one.
24297
Post by: Viktor von Domm
well that depends on ones point of view really... and although it was often quoted from various books and so on i see that that gimme ten SM or failing that...schtick is just cheap advertisment... really... no supes-soldier will be that good...ever... which puts me off if someone insists in the fluff that it is that way...
2326
Post by: shasolenzabi
Well, in the game Dark Heresy, you can have a choice of weapons, bullets and las gun packs are cheap, i throne for a clip of 20-30 bullets for a stubber, or a las gun clip.
1 single bolt is 16thrones.
53821
Post by: AnUnearthlyChilde

hey dave... 10 men... yeah right... you jimmy bob... you conquer australia...
johnny red and willy lumpkin take asia...
fred takes the arctic...
southamerica...thats for you rob...
and who wants to tackle afrika...anyone...ok then i go...^^
yeah right...10 men take a planet... with like what...altogether not even 2000 rounds...lol...even if each one had an atom bomb straped on their bums they´d loose out...
that fluff stinks...

Theres more to warfare than strength in numbers. But back to Viks point... there is nothing heroic about countless guardsmen commiting wholesale suicide

and i am not a marine hater... i just want them to fit my soldiering expiriences...(add the lil extra something to get the scifi apraoch of course...)
at brian...^that!
and dave yes... it stinks...needs to be seriously rewritten...as if that ever will happen...^^
44814
Post by: alabamaheretic
Well you also take into consideration that marines have been in countless battles and scenarions so they have a plan for everything under the sun plus there is subversion tatics too.
a gaurdsman gets about a month of training a little book and a flashlight then sent into horrible conditions to hopefully clog the gun of the enemy so the other guardsman can save the planet or some thing like that.
THe best example of a guardsmans life is a short novel called 15 hours.cant remember for the life of me who done it but it is a good read.
2326
Post by: shasolenzabi
The reason the IG are considered heroic is because they are trying to do a job with mediocre equipment and weapons, and are just like you and me.
SM have all the perks, Powered Armor, Killer vehicles and weapons, and the enhanced physiques and psycho-indoctrination
44814
Post by: alabamaheretic
yea i know but I'm a fanboy for space marines...everytime i read an imp guard novel its like being in the service again for me. crappy weapon (seriously who wants to lug a SAW around) Crappy vehicles (m114 fancy up armour humvees) and stupid lts (mine was an idiot she went fromt he peace corp to the army god damn hippies lesbo...grumble grumble...)
sorry about that last bit guys.
53821
Post by: AnUnearthlyChilde
Well, the only thing I can say about that then Vik is, why judge a sci-fi story by what is real? not everything can, and indeed should be quantified by the reality that we think we know
48594
Post by: dsteingass
No...Childe is right, the rest of us are wrong. The Guard are pointless.
Let's call GW right now and explain to them, that ONLY the fluff Childe has read is to be considered " 40K CANON"- Everything else that falls outside of his subjective experience is to be written out of history IMMEDIATELY just like the Squats.
24297
Post by: Viktor von Domm
er...bama...battle expirience makes for a very weak armor nevertheless^^
53821
Post by: AnUnearthlyChilde
oh ffs, dave your doing the exact same thing towards SM's.
Screw this, its a game, don't get your fething panties in a twist over it because someone dares to have an opinion different to yours.
48594
Post by: dsteingass
dood, you're the one who is always right. Whatever you say.
24297
Post by: Viktor von Domm
well... 40k works because we can understand certain things in realtion to our current tech level and such things... thus if something gets too heavy cheesy it gets a bit less drama effective... unwanted comic reliev i would call it...which is probably not intended by GW in any way...^^
lol...dave easy dude^^...tho i grant you full points in the squats exapmple and also the underlining logic of your argument is solid in my view too... tho the delivery...lol... talk about a heavy club^^
53821
Post by: AnUnearthlyChilde
Nope, just presenting my viewpoint. But whenever I mention SM's you bash the gak out of them. I don't bash guard at all.
48594
Post by: dsteingass
Show me where I bashed them? I said I was bored with them. Why are you getting all religiously fanatical about this stuff anyways? It's banter, jib-jab, the usual stuff.. No one is mocking your God or anythng.
2326
Post by: shasolenzabi
That is what I like about Veteran IG, plenty of experience and sneaky enough to get weapons that are shall we say, "different" than standard issue.
44814
Post by: alabamaheretic
hell i forgot to bitch about the 40 pound body armor too.
i honestly though i like the guard like shaso said they are just normalish folks in extraordinary situations that usually suck.

it is easier to identify with guardsmen...because we are closer to them...even tho they get often portrayed as the better to "earthlings"

Yes, I have seen plenty of folks who if they do not win every time, they stay away fro a while. Not saying I do not like to win, but the odd player who shows up to ask for a casual game to use a Tourney level Face smasher list is just not right.

I had a neighbor here on base that had a nine foot tall Infalteable Roll Tide Elephant in his fornt yard year round. Three days before he moved I paid him 100 bucks for it and burnt it in the fornt yard. Got a ticket from the MP's for an illegal open fire on base. My commander laughed his ass off about it......
My uncle was a running back coach for Texas Tech Red Raiders for a long time. I loved watching those women ride upa nd down the field on them horses.....

aye... the worst mails i always get on saturday tho... and also the stuff i don´t want my wife to see is in the mail to... just when you don´t want to explain something the mail man brings you a huge bitz box...

But bitz can then dissapear into existing boxes, out of sight, out of mind Automatically Appended Next Post: This is as far as I got last night

I have been troubled by the horse, I really think he needs the clockwork steed from the Empire Engineer.
A long-term project will definately be a land-version of the Monitor
Oh no..now I've gone and done it again!..I put a brisket in the oven low and slow..now i'm in for 6 hours of smell torture!!

THe shrooms are great! I meant to steal the idea for a Munda fungus garden, And the sludge pool (with glue rivets) is badass- I really liked the ladder!
I just haven't quite caught up with all the comments yet

Dave! These guys are awesome!!!! Yeah, the guns are a bit big for them, so I guess they are not to scale with all ranges of minis, but you did a great job of making it work! The rider looks sweet! I love the monicle!
Long weekend so far, and not much time for hobby over here. But I did work last night doing airbrush tattoos at a High School graduating senior's night. 9 PM to 1 AM. So tired right now!
Anyway, I am hoping to get some sculpting done today, but I'm not holding my breath. [/rant]
Again, really looking good Dave!
See you all tomorrow!

That sounds interesting the iron ship, is that like the one in that film Sahara about the missing civil war gold currency
I have heard about these before and seen a great scratch build ( I think ) model in a magazine many years ago 1/35 scale mind.
Will look forward to this taking shape as for the horses have you considered a few simple conversions of legs withe cogs and maybe half the steeds body maybe
