Great start with RSJake's stuff, Dave! They really work well, especially on that cavalry chap. If you're thinking of steampunking up a horse (how is that even a sentence?!), you could look at JRN's Duchess Death for some inspiration - breathtaking model, but maybe some replicatable things
well... actually i handeld the bitz box stuff like you mentioned it whenever possible already^^
and then i have to ask a question mate... whats with the new avatar pic... i kow that WWF fellow... forgot the name tho... but about 20 years ago he WAS wrestling all over^^
i think a good way to get a frist kinda articicial enhanced looking horse would be to attach small cables and maybe the odd canister to the horse... kind of like that the real steampunk guzmos aren´t to be seen and only maintenance stuff is to be seen... maybe a hatch on the thigh of horse...
and thanks LDD...keep your fingers crossed for some day and i tell you all what it helped me^^ because i think i need to make a quick fix of that issue...
i didn´t get it that he is your suit-up avatar... bloody stupid of me^^
well to make it even more interesting... it isn´t "just" plain vader in a suit... its the body of Indiana jones in the temple of doom back in shanghai scene... see? instant referrence to my name even... try to mix doom and vader in one tigt package like that and even dressed in a suit? huh? now say i am bloddy brilliant^^
and well ok... 35... a man of a certain age has every excuse to cheat from time to time with his age^^
I just checked- I have 2 months to finish the SeaView- I was afraid I only had 3 weeks, so that buys me a little time, waiting for LEDs to arrive from HongKong and such.

I have a bad feeling that I will begin to check these threads more to see what I should be changing my avatar to than to see what people have been working on...
oh my ...typical mindless conversation...by the way... how long do we keep the suited up avatrs... and what would be a nice new scheme.,.. i am getting bored kind of about mine already...
and dave... no chance to get led´s from somewhere more patriotic?

That crap is now all made in China, all we make now is software.
lol... i only used the word patriotic as a mock you ... but serously getting LED´s at a moments notice must be easier than ordering it online... tho i admit chineese stuff can be very low priced (i am not saying it is rubbish here! just very low in price...sadly we all know why...)

I try to buy American when I can but my will falls apart when I drive past a Harbor Frieght store.
With out sounding dumb what is a Harbor Freight store
It a tool shop, that sells cheap and inexpensive tools and suppies. They will break sooner rather than later, but when the price is 1/4 the normal cost, it more than makes up for it.

This sounds awesome!
dsteingass wrote:I want my avatar to be of my own work tbh.
and gatling lasers... well of course you should do that! will there be an actual steam engine involved? some form of getting this kind of energy made ? or will you mostly just do a gatling with diffrent muzzle and call it a laser gatling? what are your plans?
hmmm... well if you take the HW team lasgun as a basis for your inspiration you could always do some pipes and stuff leading to your gatling in the same manner as the power cordes are conneting the battery to the lasgun...
shasolenzabi wrote:Nah, most "True Amoricans" like to think America is the Greatest and most Bad Ass nation as we stomp all over the planet spreading Amoricanism
It is one of the stereotypes. The good thing about stereotypes is they're usually not 100% accurate, thus while some are like that thankfully not all would be. Right?
shasolenzabi wrote:Nah, most "True Amoricans" like to think America is the Greatest and most Bad Ass nation as we stomp all over the planet spreading Amoricanism
the gun barrels look totally sweet dave! the whole upper part is top notch... did you use hex-rods for the barrels... cool idea! but no as you attached the gun to the carriage... well the wheels look a bit too weedy for me... is it possibe for you to flesh them out a bit? give them more structure? a thin layer pfPC that might help to make it look sturdier...
Um..no Brian, I'm not going to scale it back, it is exactly how I designed it to be. It's a lascannon, and it isn't even as big as a standard Guard Lascannon.
Automatically Appended Next Post: It's a lascannon, it has no recoil, so there is no need for heavier wheels, it's meant to be able to be manned by a crew of 2, and limbered to a single horse.
I think others may think the wheels are weedy because they have seen the FWDKoK ones. But yours look exactly like I would expect from the time period you have been talking about. Very nice.
I really like the barrels! And they way you have the rotating barrels not quite lined up with the main barrel makes it look like it's spinning. Love it!
Thanks Jake, They are actually lined up with one directly in the firing position, but there is an odd number of the hexagonal barrels, so maybe that is what you are seeing?
Automatically Appended Next Post: They are using primitive Las-technology in my mind, and horses are plentiful, cheap, and reliable..
Well there is a plate there see, it covers the las-barrel and exactly 1/2 of the two barrels to either side of it. I'll take different angled shots, and one next to a GW Lascannon for Brian.
It's amazing how much we are all brainwashed by GW as far as scale goes eh?
I hear you on the Scale brainwashing. At one point I was like, "There are other scales beside 28mm Heroic? WTF?"
Most of my stuff is probably closer to 30 or 32 mm scale, but it works.
I see the plate now, it was throwing off my percecption. But not my appreciation for it! It looks great!
I had at one point tried to devise a "System" of laser and plasma "cartridges". Basically bullets with different energy weapon effects. It was when I was trying to develop a comic book based around a "Wild West in Space" theme. The main charater was a Gunslinnger Marshall type character named Rattle Snake Jake (that's where RSJake comes from by the way).
Anyway, he had these massive 6 shooters, like 50 cal. or bigger, and they could be loaded with anything from normal lead rounds to laser rounds to plasma rounds. All the energy was stored in the bullet, and released when fired.
Not sure if this idea is something you could use, but feel free.
I'm thinking of a crude power cell made in a whiskey barrel. I thought of connecting the gun to the battery via Jumper Cables, but figured they would have some sort of plug and socket system
I figured the las-muskets use a cartridge-type single-shot power cell. THis crude las-technology can be unstable, so lots of soot gets generated, so even though they don't need a ramrod, they still need to swab out the barrels to clear the soot every 25 shots or so.
And I like the LAS-gatlin, Dave. The wheels are fine and the barrels are awesome. needs some manufacturing data detail or unit markings. Maybe something like a Cavalry crossed rifles type thing....
I agree on the brainwashing, GW 'scale' is atrocious. If anyone wants some amusement, put a scale 1:48th rifle or pistol into the hands of a GW figure. Hilarity ensues.
No, I just want to see the two side-by-side, so I get a better 'view' of the gatlingLC.
Note:
Here are two gatling guns which, I think, match the size, feel, and 'heft' of what you're trying to build, Dave?
@ Max- more detail bits to come- I have to figure out the clockwork trigger mechanism too.
It it sitting more towards the front of the base than the Catachan LC is.
Automatically Appended Next Post: A gatling gun is an AP weapon, a Lascannon is an AT weapon. New technology, same mid-19th century people and tactics.
Well, it's a laser, and light doesn't make sounds. The only sound you'd hear is the LasGat barrels rotating to stay cool and maybe a high-pitched whine from the sudden air-disturbance .
you could argue that because its a bolt of laser, that you'd hear it crackle, as in the books they always describe it with a smell of Ozone. so maybe a "pft" noise
thats what I imagine anyways, as daft as it sounds
Yeah...exactly Childe! As that energy beam suddenly and violently displaces the air for a moment, you'd probably hear a crackle or something like that as the pressure wave hits your eardrum.
Automatically Appended Next Post: Whiskey barrel battery Bama, to the left just like the reg, Lascannon
I love the idea (not what i had first imagined ) the concept has turned out well although only for my personal taste I would have had larger wheels but say no more.
As for the sound it makes , I would imagine some kind of noise when each charge of light is released if only from the burning of the surrounding air.
Does each rotating barrel provide a shot or do they produce the total charge needed with each full rotation
What about the noise of the machinery? I used to have a digital watch that made a high-pitched whine when you switched the light on so I can imagine that, scaled up to las cannon levels, could very well go "freem"!
So FREEM is for your standard Lascannon, right? So the Las-Gat, would have a long drawn-out FREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEMMM....and then the ratcheting sound of the barrels spinning after the shot right?
Thanks Skalk, but it isn't as dumb as GW's Praetorians - I kid, I love those old minis, but the difference is we are all used to those, we have all seen them. Not too many people have really done US Steampunk.
I will quote the master himself "...the unmistakable crack of las-fire"
Las-fire really isn't LASER, since LASER is an acronym implying a continous beam of concentrated light. We have no scientific contemporary tech, so we must deal with "IMAGINATION"
Automatically Appended Next Post: Rawson, you don't have anything to be ashamed of bro...especially not when you get your hobby on!
I saw a tv show once on the physics behind Star Wars and how essentially none of that would happen. No noise, no massive fireball explosion, none of that.
Also, ever notice how in EVERY sci-fi move / tv show / etc that has a fleet of space ship, they are ALWAYS all on the same level plane as the opposing ships? Why aren't they attacking from... uhm... above? Sideways? Which way is up? Gah!
I think he was speaking of the "Blasters" like the Storm Troopers use.
Like the gatler Dave. If its an Anti-personnel one then you may use the already established Multi-Laser rules and such, but the weapon has no armor penetration value.

how about cutting the barrel in half, making the insides look like bubbling acid with the two conductors hanging out? Or use two small ones, with a cable going to each, then an extra cable acting as conductor between the two?
what about underslinging a smaller barrel as the battery under the housing at the front? where the barrel of the gun lies. that way its battery is a part of the carriage and doesnt require carrying
Automatically Appended Next Post: BTW... anyone seen RW? I haven't seen him about in days... and well I miss the fething weirdo's jokes
Although it could be fun if it could shoot the expended batteries out at the enemy. But then that seems more Ork-like and you'd have to forget the things are rechargeable and likely worth the same as the crew, if not more, alone.
have you thought about laying down the battery instead of positioning it standing upright? i think that might look better... sort of like a whiskey barrel when it is not moving around...woth tow resting thingies made from the same wood...the cables and the conductors by the way look ace... and i just love the chain you used...that is for sure some chain that looks the right scale!!!
dsteingass wrote:hmm..All I have are big barrels, and small barrels, nothing in-between- This'll do I suppose.
I think the middle sized one would be a better fit. As it is, your battery is bigger than a man (but maybe that's just because it's crude and inefficient? )
dsteingass wrote:Rawson, you don't have anything to be ashamed of bro...especially not when you get your hobby on!
Given the power requirements, I would say that the battery is just about right. It probably needs some handles on the side. The only batteries available around the ACW era were wet batteries, large, sloshy affairs. Plus, the need to make them quickly refillable with the catalyst liquid/replace the anodes. Wartime would have seen a ton of barrels converted to field batteries.
Yep! Good idea there Jake! I like the Tie-down hooks best! They would roll and heft the barrel by hand like any other barrel, but the hooks would definately be needed in the recharging process.
And that is why I run so many ideas past you lot! If I were doing this, I would have added the handles thinking they looked cool, and you would have come along and said "That looks good jake, but how are they going to roll the barrel?"
<nerd> The recharging process is replacing the acid in the battery, and replacing the anode/cathode as they degrade during the process. Rechargeable batteries won't exist for... </nerd>
They just have Las-tech ok It's just being industrialized, like everything else in the mid-19th Century
Don't try to rationalize it If IG can wear Pith Helmets and be accepted, so can this
lol man it seemed like months! no cable no computers, i would have died if my FW order didnt come in (although i had zero glue when it did so i had to rely on bluetac)
oowww thanks, it just so happens i have found 2 of the most terrible jokes ever this weekend, although i dare not say it on any of your threads as its too bad... too offensice... too disturbingly funny
Dude, you went from figuring out where the barrel should be all the way to base color? When do you sleep? I don't even think you are a real person anymore. You are a collective of 3 or 4 guys that crank out awesome terrain and bizarre scratch builds and Legos and commercial models.
i chime in with the joke PM... gotta have a laugh every now and then... beside i expect you otherwise to burst all over the place if you get not your chance to tell them
and we wouldn´t have nasty pices of RW all over the place... not even widex would get the stench away
dave...amazing... just to pick my favorite piece of the new model out from that big range of colness... the green frame... that looks so wonderful! together with the brass parts... you have a winner here..!!!
too bad i wasn´t on yesterday... the only thing i had wished now to get modified a bid is that thingy that gets hooked into the carriage thingy...could have been a bit longer in my book but i really like that new piece...
and with yon yxanks on those sticks on corks...you going now all propainter or what ?
Thanks Vik..As for the hitch arm on the gun...It only needs to be longer and sturdier on a gun that has recoil for stability, a Lascannon doesn't have recoil, that is why it uses a light gun carriage
this gives you plenty of oportunities to join after all... otherwise the etheral discussions would always leave you out... i like to get the lower class people get a part of the spotlight too... you are humans after all too.... for a given value of human of course
ethereal [ɪˈθɪərɪəl]

1. extremely delicate or refined; exquisite
2. almost as light as air; impalpable; airy
3. celestial or spiritual
4. (Chemistry) of, containing, or dissolved in an ether, esp diethyl ether an ethereal solution
5. of or relating to the ether

I want to Publicly retract my previous argument against GW's new paint system. I've picked up and used some of them, and I have been reading their new teaching system book, and I am most impressed!
If I were just starting my paint collection/investment, I think buying all new GW paints, and using their system to learn to paint would actually be beneficial, it takes the color-mixing out of the equation, which was always a pain in the balls for me.
The base colors are all very dense pigment, the layer colors have a huge range, there are only a few drybrush colors, highlight colors, the way they should be, and so far, the texture paints I have picked p are all a bit different, they aren't just an expensive sand in paint gimmick like I thought, they are all different texture materials mixed in with LGS and paint.

I gotta say, Dave, I was wrong on the copper coloring on the barrel. I meant the bands around it but what you have done is fantastic. Suggestion for future thought: Wouldn't a refillable battery be prone to spillage around the filling area? Would that also not cause maybe some greenish corrosion on metal parts as a result of the acidic nature of the liquid?
In no way a criticism as the crew obviously maintains their weapon system well and it looks fantastic as is. I am just used to certain conditions on weapons in the miltary that are unavoidable. Silvering of blued barrels, dings, scratches and so forth. Just thinking out loud really....
Max- I dunno, I guess if they have Las-tech, they must also have a sealed system of power cells...regardless, it's done as-is, maybe someday I'll add weathering.
Thanks Jake!
