Dropping in quick, Dave, to say 'aces' on the final product. I feel that the fully-loaded combat deck really makes this FEEL Catachan. I can see this vehicle plowing through the jungle, alert crew looking up into the trees to open up on any number of jungle predators lurking in the canopy.

Great job!

Let's talk about Games Day 2012.

After the opening WAAAGH! Though, I can't say where I'll be in that big conference hall. I plan on:

-Waiting in line at FW for approx. 2 hours as usual..
I MUST HAVE a THunderbolt, For sure, no doubt.... but I also want one of the new Avenger Fighters (sweet-talk the GF perhaps? ) As well as The new Imperial Armour Masterclass book, Imperial Aeronautica book, and PEB Aquillas.

-Shopping regular GW stuff and BL tables
From BL I'm looking for the new Mordian Iron Guard novel

-DOing the Make n Take Scenery -I missed it last year..
oh the mountain of Sprues!!

-Taking pics of EVERY club and display table like this

-Meeting Phil Stutcinskas and Getting him to sign my IMPERIAL ARMOUR MODEL MASTERCLASS VOLUME ONE book
-Play the big-ass super-heavy multiplayer APOC tank game

@Storag..WB man, Thanks those are really cool minis! Reaper also makes some good ones in their Chronoscope line, I can usually find those minis all over the place, I have quite a few waiting to be converted or just painted.

Yes, different types of it and a bit of poly-bla-bla something as a base. Just found a store of this company nearby. Hope they'll start shipping it worldwide. I've reviewed one of their sets at my thread.

Yep! They hand everyone a few random building sprues and a base of some kind, knife, clippers, crappy GW glues (which is ok, because I intend on immediately taking it all apart and reusing the bitz when I get home ) and you get something like 45 mins and you can take your little building home with you. They have the same with miniatures, last year I had a Tomb Kings Sprue, a Necron somethingorother sprue, and a Chaos Marauder Sprue. I was lost with the Necron Bitz, so I just made a beastman-chaos thing dual-weilding axes..meh..I can always reuse free CoD bitz

Dave, I told him to look you up around the GD displays. You are showing the Orkmower, correct?

I know it is a long shot but I hope you guys can meet. I wish it was me is the only reason I decided to hook him up with your name.

I would love to see that thing up close and personal. I guess I will just have to wait for my Macharious to be finished so you can paint it for me.......

I so badly wanted to go two weeks ago when I found out it was this weekend but it was already too late. I guess I have to plan these things better in the future....

Anyway, get your game on and be back ready to judge the terrain comp, OK?

You think I should create a separate GD coverage thread?

Well, I made the first Cut!- Which is cool in itself, but unfortunately I did not place in the finals. But making first cut means that I beat out a good 8-10 entries in the category. Oh well, next year perhaps, it was still great fun, many, many, many people took plenty of photos of my tank, it was pretty cool to watch!

We had a GREAT time, I have tons of pics, but the lines were soo long I couldn't get pics of everything. Internet from my 3G hotspot iis slow, so I'll wait until I'm home to upload them all

I also have some AMAZING loot to show, including 2 Thunderbolts and a Vulture! But first, it's time to rest these aching feet a bit

Hey Vik? You asked for it....here I am. D's other half (other, not better, let's not start a competition!) I'm sitting next to a huge pile of books, have downloaded a few army tracking apps and started reading some of the painting tutorial threads. Given my second Games Day experience painting an incredibly small goblin, I'm pretty sure I've got quite a long way before I have anything worthy of posting, but I'm looking forward to futzing with some scrap bits to work my skill up (where's my +20 painting skill hat when i need it most?) My main concern with this endeavor was to make sure I got my own brushes so I don't destroy his during the learning process!

oh... and i think according to that last staement i have a nice surprise for the competition in store for you both to show... do stay tuned madame as things will be quite nice!

since dave mentioned a dwarven army... have you already assembled some, painted some or even more than that? when will we see some of your goodies? oh... and if you ever need some more dwarvens... i have still a battle of skull pass on my shelf of shame...

Thanks for all the support everybody! It really means a lot! I can't wait to try again next year!

Speaking of The Golden Demon, here are some pics. I did not get a chance to go through the loong line to see all of them, There just wasn't enough time.
So this is my category

There were a LOT of Dakkajet kits in the Category, it makes sense that GW would pick it to sell even more of the kits. It was a great experience.
This FW Bommer was in the finals for obvious reasons, such a well-done job

THis also beat me to the final cut..but it's blurry sorry

I DO NOT have a pic of the yellow Dakkajet, but It'll be in WD and GW's website soon enough I'd bet.

It's good to know I beat all of these, including a Titan

This is when we got into the hall an entire HOUR early @9:00AM to check in our competition pieces, as a result, we were 4th in line (queue for you Brits) for Forge World

This was probably the only time this excellent costume competitor wasn't sweating to death, he was fresh and ready for pictures.
Apparently a blonde in a SoB costume won, but I never got to see her

We could see the Opening WAAAAGH! From the INSIDE

I was getting my Forge World goodies, trying to talk to the guy over loud WAAAAGHs, fill out order forms and such for the stuff they didn't have there, but would ship me free, so Lauri took these pics, It scared the crap out of her! -She deserves a medal!
FRESH Thunderbolts! ...We were overburdened with fresh plastic crack, so we went back and stashed them under lock and key back at the Hotel,
We were suddenly unburdened! ..And returned to the convention refreshed, knowing our precious loot was safe

Immediately to the right of the entrance was the Staff Armies Display cases

Lauri immediately fell in love with these Purple LOTR Dwarves

My Favorite were these Pirate Ogres..The most Epic GS work I've ever seen
These Bewbs are for you Jake!

Some Noteworthy Nids, I loved the color..dangerous!

The Forge World Line was almost at the door at this point

We were very lucky to get in first, all fresh, nothing picked over

The new Warhammer Fantasy MMO

It's a free-to-play game too, it looks cool, the guy talked to us (mostly Lauri) at length about it.
I was Distracted by this nearby Club Table..

..In the shape of a ship!

Dammit, how dare you players get your hands in the way of my shot!!

Ahh!..Better!

The other end.

Then I was distracted yet again by the 40K BIG GAME table !

Imperial Tanks were all so-so

The Ork Tanks..OMG!

There were also WHFB and LOTR BIG GAMES set up

There was sadly, only one other club table made of wood, Warmill stuff and a FW Zone Mortalis set, This is the only partial pic I could get

Galorn, you and I need to talk about creating a "Zone Mortalis Compatible" set of products

There were Many Open-gaming tables set up with gaming going on everywhere

And more sights to see

The Conversion Contestants kitbashes were displayed

This guy won! - He also had ANOTHER one painted and in the GD comp with me!

Here we see Charlie Manson competing in the Realm of Battle Board thing

The Realm of Battle Board thing was kind of stupid this year IMHO

Every set of players just does one step..drybrush the rocks, next group paints the skulls bleached bone, next group drybrushes white on the Bleached bone skulss..on and on and on..You get a raffle ticket, and they raffle off a few complete Realm Of Battle board sets (a $290 value)
-meh

The line just to see the Armies on Parade was as long as Golden Demon
So I didn't get many shots, and not even a good overall one of the winner, except when he was setting up in the moring.
You'll see him in White Dwarf soon

He told me he added the texture bumps on the sails!! -Sorry for the pics, but when you see it, you'll see how he won!

I really like this one too

my apologies, the above two pics were not from AoP, they are from a game, my bad.

Thus ends my Games Day Coverage, thanks for watching during Olympic commercials

Pfft...

I see no problem playing with an unpainted army.

I do however not like those people.. (One of my friend's friend's) *cough* that love to proxy things....

"Oh guys! This pineapple is a titan. Just so you know...

But this otherone's just a marine..."

Enough said...

Althought painted armies are great!
I'm used to seeing people with half done armies playing.
After all why rush and have an army your unhappy with?

Just keep at it and enjoy the hobbie..
After all most of the fun comes from building, painting and playing the army.

for the seaview i have to change back now in gear quite a lot^^... but it is needed to be done...maybe we will all enjoy it nevertheless...tho that catachan jungle mower sure wet my appetite for more greenish stuff

and as for the discussion concerning unpainted armies entering a game... i am honor bound to never pay with something that looks as if it should get into the dumpster... after the paintjob...however horrible it might be... the mini gets it´s character and then can be fielded... unpainted... would make me a general that has no connection to his troops... so would sacrifice them all too easily... i guess it is some kind of religious thing going on... so not really for discussion^^

and war, war never changes...

nice wood grain mate...

what will be achieved if you paint before de-sprueing? will it make the built quicker? and what about the possibilty of not being able to flush in with the other parts? just curious to hear your thoughts about that...

by the way... did a little wiki tour for that project... and as RW said... the orange is very much to the feel of that area!

The Necromunda Project: Fallout @ 2012/07/31 10:37:52

Post by: dsteingass

Thanks, what do you mean by "flush it in with other parts"?

The main advantage to painting on the sprue is holding the tiny parts steady. The disadvantage is that little dingleberry on the back of the chairs that I just noticed, which means I have to sand that off and touch up there.

The Necromunda Project: Fallout @ 2012/07/31 10:48:58

Post by: Viktor von Domm

^exactly... moldlines and those "dingleberries" all the stuff you avoid by demolding first then painting... but i think these detailbitz there are really tiny... so a good line of work there...

flush it in with other parts
i just compare it with your wall diorama you built before... the one with the crappy fitting parts...

The Necromunda Project: Fallout @ 2012/07/31 11:18:27

I'm interested in seeing how this painting before 'cleanup' of the bits works..

I hope it works well and doesn't add more work to you Dave.

Good luck!

The Necromunda Project: Fallout @ 2012/07/31 13:55:04

Post by: dsteingass

These chairs are fething TINY, they really are. Meh..I suppose it elped most of the painting to have them on the sprues, but yeah, the dingleberries are definitely noticeable and I don't like them, so I'll fix that up and re-paint the console countertop (i don't really like that light grey I used)- Whatever I decide on I will use the same color on the countertop behind the sofa. Did you see the little molded-in bar with the two whiskey glasses and decanter? The bottom-half of the lounge walls and the cabinets will have that same woodgrain as the table top too.

.... Right Dave?

The Necromunda Project: Fallout @ 2012/07/31 14:16:44

Post by: dsteingass

Yeah, I'll have to get you a scale shot- you can see the size of the observation deck compared to a Vallejo Dropper Bottle in the first painted shot, before I stippled Beasty Brown over the tan to give it the shag carpet look.
Here I found some great shots of the Observation Lounge in all it's sixties glory. I have another pic from the movie in a book showing the fancy ashtrays that sit between the front seats, those need to be scratchbuilt somehow.

These show the "DJ Booth" pretty well IMHO
The Spiral staircase too.

The aforementioned ashtray

Yeah..In the article in SciFi and Fantasy modeler, the designer talks about how they had to "tweak" the model as far as the obs lounge went, since the filming set was completely out of scale in the 60s You've got to remember, real Nuclear Submarines were pretty much still classified back then.

How wide is it? Let's assume that about 3 tanks could fit per square inch on each level; how wide is it, and how many levels are there? Also, how many levels are not the full length/width, and what are their dimensions?

The hull is hollow other than the observation deck at the front, 2 decks. The Conning tower is not open, but an adventurous modeler could easily scratch out the rest of the interior if he/she wanted to. The whole thing is maybe 6" wide, not counting the fins and such.

Holy feth! That's 1,404 tanks! I would love to see an epic scale army that big!

one question...with assembly work on such tiny stuff... do you yell a lot and start running around? i know i would... my breath would be unsteady from the pressure i put myself under to be still enough... and then i would have to unclench^^ completley and need some uncontrolled movements afterwards... the whole interior is so fething tiny ... now seing it next your stromtrooper... i don´t even kow how you did that cool looking wood grain...

The Necromunda Project: Fallout @ 2012/07/31 21:48:42

Post by: dsteingass

Heh, the woodgrain is actually really simple, Rhinox Hide base color, then I use the really thin Vallejo Wood color and a small brush and just start making streaks with it, wider toward the edges, and then I rub the edge of the brush along the outside edges for the highlight -There will be MOAR woodgrain, I'm glad it worked and that you like it.

I fixed the rest of it

$137 USD, but a Vulture kit is only $94, where a Valkryie kit is $60..strange.

Sexy!

Well the vulture uses plastic bits from the valk, so essentially the $34 you pay is a conversion kit. Afaik you get a whole valk. The thunderbolt is obviously a full resin kit.

Well, I know this. I jerry rigged the FETHING HADES out of that thing and burnt myself three times WHILE melting LED's out.....

It finally worked.

I know that you have to be concerned with the resistance capacity of the LED and not just the diameter. AND colours sometimes differ in what they can handle even when packaged together.

AND parallel versus serial is a definate deciding point on what and how many you can use. That is the reason why I couldn't get red LED's on the wingtips and tailfin of the Electro-Hawk. Even without using any resistors or capacitors.

And as far as Jared getting the 'Special" MRE's....

We all did. Period.

But I guess it would allow for a greater flexability as to how the model can be posed...

Well, it's a FW model, not really intended for modelers afraid of cutting

Go get one, they are pretty cheap, it's the most useful tool you can have around the house.

I would think that it could be a good investment. Not just for the modeling eather.

It has a lot more complex lines and angles to it than you might think. The more I look at it, the more I realize what a sexy design it really is.

I never drilled the flight stand for My Marauder Destroyer Didde, I modeled it with landing gear out. But I bought a big piece of square clear acrylic rod to mount that heavy bastard on if I ever actually play with it. It's the epitome of a superheavy tank-hunter!

This is the controversial photo of the box of the plastic kit. Some say it's a photoshop, others say they didn't release it in 2009 because of the economy.

Since the stupid OP space marines now have 2 plastic flyer kits, it stands to reason that there will be more for other armies. This seems like it would be the ideal mate for the Valkrie/Vendetta IMHO.
But I dunno.

Well, I did do a papercraft one a while back to see if I liked em. I think it would actually take about four hours The remora from draft to cast is only about two hours of work total.....

But not that I am tooting my own horn, or anything. I don't think it would look as sexy as the FW. Dave is right, their early models are top notch.....

The reason that I think that photo is NOT the FW kit is because of the bitz I have marked out here:

On the nose...this little fin bit is listed on the parts list of the instruction sheet (but no mention of where it goes) of the FW kit, but it is not actually in the kit, it is the same part #31(fin and sensor) on the instruction sheet as the little thing glued to the vented afterburner cowling. The little aerial thing above the cockpit is not part of the FW kit, there is no mention of it either. It could be someone's addition to the FW kit, but it looks like a GW bit to me. I put one of my "fin and sensors" there because the drawing in the Imperial Aeronautica book had it there.

Also, the tail seems a bit thicker than the FW kit to me.

The Necromunda Project: Fallout @ 2012/08/03 17:57:28

I didn't think FW kits came in a box.....

Yes, a brown box, but this is supposedly a picture of the plastic version that has not yet been released.

I haven't even thought about Flyers yet. I've seen rumor threads about the Chaos release, it looks like something out of a bad sci-fi movie on the USA Network.

Unfortunately not, the warlord is still unfinished, i expect the next time a big apoc game comes round ill finish it up then. Did just finish a warhound though (pics forthcoming in my imperium thread).

I dont mind fw's chaos flyers myself, but some of the epic stuff looks terrible.

Back ot:

What colour scheme you doing the 'bolt in dave? Same as the marauder?

Sorry just reread my post I have one thunderbolt, I was asking if you had 2

From what I heard from someone at GW the plastic thunderbolt was an idea, however was never actually made into a kit.

They did mention there was some mock ups nocking around the net, plus an altered FW model that people were assuming to be the plastic kit.

However you never know if they are telling you the truth or BS

I bought both tbolts to be escorts for the Marauder Destroyer, but since fighter wings and bomber wings are organized differently in the Navy, they will have a jungle camo scheme on top and a light grey underbelly. The Navy recruits from Catachan just like the Guard does, so they should all be different, but still have a unifying look.

The Necromunda Project: Fallout @ 2012/08/03 20:19:17

Post by: lone dirty dog

Now that would look cool two thunderbolts escorting the marauder bomber, you could always give them a general camo pattern, then give the tail wing an individual design .

hey dave... those radios are one hell of a cool kit for your ongoing fallout table idea! and since you now have so much expirience with woodgrain these should be a cool sight to see if you start working with them!

and man... seeing the carved cross in that plane... that needs some balls for such a task...

so... how long till your voting is finished?

From someone who uses photoshop ALOT this is definatly photoshop, but the crap quality of the design could also mean that the box is WIP but I dont believe it (want to, but dont)

I really loved the Lightning, and when I owned one, it really spanked the table. The new Avenger is a brutal, brutal flyer. I want three of 'em.

I wish I could win the lottery, so I could build my Imperial Navy Strike Carrier...
