DiDDe wrote:can you remove LGS as you remove regular paint? like stripping?
or is it like regular GS?
When I strip paint, the gs comes off, too. I haven't used lgs, yet, i think I should try it if it's this cool. The gs stripping that i've had was from pine-sol, so that might have been it...
good looking plants mate! and yes... the LGS comes in handy for so many things... gapfilling is by far only one thing you can do with that... i see it way more often as a means to get extra texture on things to later benefit better by drybrushing... for instance... wooden texture...just a stiffer brush run over the not completly dried LGS...presto good looking wood!!!
yup... it really works... tho the wood grain you can do with my big pal PVA too... just aply it over wanted surface... let it sit for a min...then get over the glue again with stiffer brush and dito presto wood grain... i did that on my now forgotten but once famous big tank^^...the boiler if you remember^^
where did you get that comb idea? pics... vid mabye? that needs to be seen!
well the PVA texture is an old one i happend to discover by sloppy accident... i always give with the fullest when painting... so i then saw that i created texture by accident...
many good ideas and inventions happend this way....
not my idea but it is here, Dave you might like some of these ideas, all though you have either done them or seen this all ready http://www.3t-studios.com/archives/3766
Not scrapped, just sidelined for a different project at a later date -I'm going to stick to action poses on this particular beast, don't really want to mix at-ease poses with action poses.
I, also, enjoyed the link, LDD. And, Dave, I think the BBQ and Social would fit into you Necro terrain nicely on some small forgotten corner of table.....

Anyone remember when I joined the -=L,=-??
I'm in no way complaining... Just completly lost and wondering where in the 40000000 pages I've read through it could be hidden.
if someone actually hasn´t already looked into blightwheel stuff... they should do so imidiatly... that is such a money dumb... if i had enough money that is^^
Damn, that is one tough old timer of the Guard! looks like he has seen 'em come and go, killed a lot of Orks in his time, and no time for cuttin' beards and hair out in the boonies fighting Orks so much, now helping out getting the ammo but not w/o his trusty las rifle along at all times

Yeah, he was supposed to be good in that one, but I have not caught any episodes of that yet.
well... go watch them... lots of potential for more... but sadly won´t happen... the made 1.5 worth of seasons... and then the quit... but i watched the show with my wife...which shows that it had something for everybody...
well mates... i am off for bed now... see y´all tomorrow!!!
for me personaly i would go for "realistic" but i think this does fit with catachan style, makes me think of the Russian comissars yelling at the troops to get off the train and charge! so its all depending on the message you want to send with it, this one obviously being "shoooooot!"
mxwllmdr wrote:I like it. Isn't this for a GD or some such. Maybe the dio-like look of it is better.....
Maybe not, though, I wouldn't know what the judges look for beyond a badasss paintjob.....
From experience of the UK Gamesday (and in fairness the US one may look for different things), they look for crisp lines, a model that sticks to its entry (i.e. WF-monster, 40K unit etc.) but also sticks to its own history like catachans being jungle fighters, SoB being devout and Eldar being clean and graceful, if its based sympathetically and lastly whether it goes with the judges collective idea of what "visual theme/style" they are looking for that year.
I managed the last round of 40k single miniatures a few years back now, but at the time I left it alone due to favourtism being rife with the judges. It seems to have changed now for the better thankfully... now that Jacob Neilsen has retired... bad GW, bad
However like Child said it is what you like, after all it's your creation
I know they used to have quite strict rules at GD, even though they some things slipped through.
Like when one guy one for his Eldar army, after the judges found out he had not actually painted it, it was his misses but because he had been awarded all ready they did not want to look stupid by taking it back
Your choice man really! I like the first, but over crowded but the second is a bit less, perhapos have a guy climbing over the tank somehow? Btw how did you do that camo netting ?
well i likd the overcrowded bunch better... specially now the sarge screaming atop of the masses... and that lasguner... you can immagine him screaming "eat this" whenever he shoots and the gun is always jolting... gangsta warrior style...
the crwoded scene is definatly cover art style... in true bunched up style of the IG... a wall of human flesh and huns like a giant porcupine!... i´d go for the first right away!
the second one is just too dull...

Yeah, but that rule is there for good reason, Now if they find out it's not your own work, you are disqualified from ALL FUTURE entries too! I mean, how much of a complete gakker does a person have to be to cheat at a talent contest??
The crew placement are just pure aesthetics. There isn't really a rule about that.

we had thunder last night as well! Wipe up to a down pour.
The rain didn't help at ask tho as it's already gone. Didn't soak in. still 35°c (100°f+) around here.
It has been over 100F every day for about 2 weeks now here. It's still sticky with nasty high humidity of about 75%, but everything has been so dry and brown and crusty.
Wasn't it in 4th Ed that Catachans would roll on a chart and possibly frag someone from their HQ before deployment? Keeping w/ the US Vietnam era mythos.
Ah. Thanks for the correction. I only heard of it. I missed 3rd and 4th, and only caught the tail end of 5th. I was gone a long time.
But I'm back and 6th is awesome! Really looking forward to the new CSM Codex coming out.
And yeah, you're project is looking pretty sick. Suggestion? Have a wounded guy up there as well. That looks like a horrible place to have to be in the middle of a battle, even if you are standing on a rolling gun battery.
Skalk Bloodaxe wrote:Wasn't it in 4th Ed that Catachans would roll on a chart and possibly frag someone from their HQ before deployment? Keeping w/ the US Vietnam era mythos.
Rule was "Oops, Sorry Sir!"
You had to roll for each commissar, on a 6 (if I remember), he had... difficulties... making it to war on time.
Thanks for clarifying that rule. I love the idea of a little bit of humanity left in the Imperium instead of blind obeisance. Rise up against your oppressors! Free yourselves from Imperial tyranny!

@Hazzer
It all got a complete Athonian Camoshade wash airbrushed on to dye it. -Then I let it dry in front of the fan
Then I added some swirly patterns of Steel Legion Drab(graveyard earth) airbrushed and Catachan green painted on one side of the tape flaps (the other side is just regular tape color and the athonian camoshade wash) -Then I let it dry in front of the fan
those are some sick catachans... take a look... them all green in their faces...
good looking camo netting... second thing now? and the plats look so cool... and what do i see? valhallan? wouldn´t it be a bit too sweaty for them in the jungle?
heh..I just poured too much brown primer....didn't want to let it go to waste

Thanks for all the well-wishes. We are lucky in that it was not a full tornado, and so we did not get the full-on 'total destruction' that an actual tornado can produce.
Just flicked through the 10 pages or so since I last had a chance to be on Dakka - amazing work on the Stormlord, Dave! So much attention to detail in the crew. I'm not usually a fan of tank-work, but they really bring it to life. Rare to see a vehicle with personality!
Great weathering on the hull itself too. Amazed you've got the patience for a project on this scale
Thanks a lot guys! Much appreciated. I really need to get this done this weekend. So just help me get through the workday today, and I'll pay you all with progress pics
Woot! Back home and back to work.
I think we have covered the topic of raisins pretty well, but I love dried cranberries. Far superior to Raisins IMHO.
i dunno why the raisin hate... well the more for me
and my kids love them...besides...it is much easier to give them this stuff than the oversweetened industry stuff...
and that sarge is looking very cool... but what i see is that you are in need of a powertool to smooth down the bumpyness of metal models... like a brass brush or something like that???
Yeah it'll have enough scenery on top to blend into the tank, but completely removable, if the Judges can't take it off the base, it is only eligible for the Diorama Category.
Automatically Appended Next Post: I fixed the pintle stubber gunner
hey dave... what i´ve meant was that at the sword wielding arm has a some weird looking structures on the lower arm... i thought it was due to somebumpyness of the metal...
nice chain and the wooden base is a nice idea! will you make it look like antique wood?
Yeah, I probably didn't file him properly, or it could just be fuzz, I dunno.
Automatically Appended Next Post: I'm not sure, it's basswood, so it really doesn't have a very pronounced grain...We'll see once I sand it really well.
for me mold lines on metal are always harder to get rid of anyway...
in our recent holidays we visited a tinminiature museum... and that guy... he painted those minis... he used a certain power tool to file and smooth the models... cant really tell what... some drill like sanding/file like tool...
This is looking really snazzy. I'm guessing the "driver" and some of the others were also primed by the fuzzy primer? or is the camera just fuzzing up the paint?
Those are the branches I made earlier- need to paint those leaves a bit better and shade the branches, but I wanted it tucked in and the glue dried first.
I did that to the trees you used to get with some GW kits like the Tau battleforce box. Painted several shades of green with camo green dry brushed to get that plant feel.
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That is amasing! The tank is looking sweet man! But you may need to touch up a few bits on the gunners and crew... For instance the teeth necklass around their arms could do with some paint! the turrent gunner has a tooth neclass that needs dind too... But overall is looks fantasic!
cool work mate... i bet when you close your eyes you see all green^^...
the gunners, heck all thre crew looks very good... and i repeat my opinion... do the tank deck crowded...! it gives that old school feel to the viewer... sometimes it is more if you give ot more... you are making IG...and catachan IG... so it is not french cuisine here with a big plate all empty save for the small chunk of carrot and a pea....
and ...the lenses look cool too...
the hazard stripes by the way made me lol... the team does try to camo up that tank and then realism hits it again with those hazard stripes...LOL^^

That Marauder Destroyer is a FUN build dood! Enjoy it!
Well, this is as far as I go tonight...Tomorrow, I finish this sniper and place him and probably start landscaping the top of the plaque board which got another coat of Future.
gosh... you had me freaked out for a second... i actually thought you painted the board all blue... then it hit me... it is just masked...*phewwww....*
good looking ground there... lots of different spots... looks very lifelike... but not finished yet i bet...
as for the com guy... good looking too... but it seems your green drybrushing action slightly hurt the skin color...better fix that! you will otherwise hate yourself for that...well a bit at least
and the last pic you showed of the fighting deck...THAT is cover art mister... it really is... the red and green mix... that just screams bloddy catachan!!!truly inspiring... if i ever come to work on my own catachans... it will be because of these... you can bet!!!
The base isn't judged, it's just to fit the model into the environment, but I will probably do something more with it, I will definitely apply the same weathering powders to both the base and the tank yet.
@Vik- I didn't drybrush anything..what are you talking about specifically?
Automatically Appended Next Post: I'm not sure about puddles and/or wet mud, I really want it to look dry, hence the reason why I already modeled the dry mud on the tank. Sounds good man.
I was pretty sure that the board wasn't judged but was jsut wondering where it was going.
I think that the dry board makes alot of sence now that you put it that way..

Dry looks WAY better. at most ad a few fallen logs or some such.

I wish I could not be at work and go home and finish this beast up. This is the longest, and best paintjob I have ever done. Of course I see things I could have improved upon all the time.
I still need to:
1. mask the inside of the tracks and drybrush metallics where the road wheels meet the treads
2. Paint Highlights on the hubs of the road wheels
3. Touch up the PEB leaves where the brass is showing through (from handling them with CA-encrusted fingers)
4. Add more to the base
5. Add final weathering powders/washes to both the base and tank and fix them
Automatically Appended Next Post: I don't think you guys understand what I am doing here, there is no water..there WAS water, mixed with dirt..about a week ago, that is MUD, now it is all DRIED. There will be no water puddles because that would look stupid on the base when the tank is covered in DRY MUD.
This is what armor looks like covered in dry mud, notice no wetness, no water, no puddles whatsoever.
the dry mud i thought of too... the tracks define the terrain underneath... usually it is the other way... but since you started with the tank and then built the board to match...that´s the way to go... i only suggested the waterpuddles because i had a flash caused by the darker green spots on the base... somehow that suggested water for me... i see now that this was my fault...
well track marking on the ground would have been nice... but first i wouldn´t know how to do that... and second... now is the wrong time... that would have to be done way earlier...
tho the addition of a bit of bark to work as a nice fallen tree trunk rotting towards eternity would be a nice thing^^
and... didn´t the GI first use the M-14 in the "asien" wars? or am i that much mistaken? no real knowledge here... only from what i saw in movies/TV and in games...
My Dad did all of his Basic Training with an M-14 in 1966, He was rated "Expert" with an M-16 and a .45 Cal. Pistol, but only rated as "Sharpshooter" on the M-14. By the time he was in-country in 1967, everyone was issued with an M-16 though- He said the M-14 was a heavy motherfether, similar to the BAR in weight.
i bet that the m14 is a heavy weight... not that i have that much of expeireince with many different guns... but my G3 was a heavy mother too...and same caliber if i am not totally wrong...
I used the M-14 on military funerals and honor guard for three years. It was a heavy bastard to drill with but once you learn how it is easy to flip around and such....
Perhaps this will shed some light on what I am doing.
The Men get the same weathering as the tank...
Especially heavily on their boots, knees, legs and asses...
...so will the base. All that green texture paint is just base testure for the dried mud that this came from
Then after a spray of future and matte varnish, the first static grass is smashed down, so we add pva and sprinkle more static grass for varying heights of growth
well mate... would you have thought you end up with such a beauty after all this time with a dusty only primed tankrotting on a shelf?... fully justified best work of yours ! by far... and that is sayiong something too...you pulled every damn trick i can think of on that beast... the finished base looks very good...i think in the end you should get yourself a glasshousing for that tank to keep the dust away when you come back from the con... also... would it be too late to suggest a nametag made of brass on the base? like...: Srg. Knuckleface and his howling commandos on the Orkmower?
Wow! You have inspired my to pick up my brush again. Thanks Dave
What a beautiful tank. The gauze camo netting is such a simple technique that when done correctly really brings a whole new level of realism to scale modeling. If you do it again on any other models I am sure your devoted followers would like a tutorial... I know I would.
That is incredible! If my ork dakka shop came out 1/1000 as good as that, I would be amazed with myself! Probably not going to happen, though; you set even the 1/1000 bar too high! I should at least strive for 1/10000...
@Max- like I said "Bring it on!" How many titans do I have to paint to be worthy of being paid with a Max-built titan of my own?? As for shipping..I now have to punch out a foam tray that will fit this beast for transport to GD. I'd suggest you make a foam sarcophagus of some kind that fits one, then we reuse that same foam sarcophagus. It'll be a specialty-built/bought thing, but I don't think there is really much choice, They need to be able to survive transit in the Warp (or UPS, whichever is worse).
Well, actually, my GF had that idea before any of you did , unfortunately, It just didn't happen, In order to make the tread ruts believable, I would have had to add about a 1/4" thickness to the base, and I didn't want to do that, I wanted the base to be simple, relatively flat and not distract from the tank, since the Tank is judged "off of the base" and the base is only for display aesthetic purposes (i.e. NOT JUDGED), and the fact that Games Day is this Saturday and I had limited time. It just wasn't worth it.
When you add effects just because you can, ultimately you end up with something as horrible as that remake of Godzilla starring Jack Black, or even worse, Transformers 2.
I'm sorry guys, you just aren't getting tire ruts on this one.
Automatically Appended Next Post: @Randy- Leaves are generally uniform and bright and glossy IRL no? - Besides, they are effectively just spot colors breaking up the effective disruptive camouflage of the netting. Don't want it to look too real, this is still GW after all

That's my favourite of the titans as well. Be cool to see one given the same treatment as the Orkmower. Not expecting the camo stuff, that's more or less Warhound territory if anything.
Oh, I'd also think the Malifaux line would be interesting to you. Seems to be similar for what you seem to be going for. This one's reminding me of Perdita so far.
So, Last night I saw Zombieland for the first time (I know, I know, I don't know how I missed it this far either) However It got me thinking that I'd really like to have a Talahassee miniature with a Banjo.
Probably slung across his back like with this Action Figure
So that is my plan after I take that Green Stuff class at GenCon, hopefully I will be able to use my newfound GS skills to sculpt his hat, necklaces, and the tuning machines and fretboard on the banjo.
