For years I have played this game and for years I have seen many a strange reaction to game changing events in a battle.

Iv seen people start to do some sort of jig when they are winning, go into their jock style shouts and "booyas", and out right point and laugh at their opponent.
I have also seen the flip side, where people will do anything from sit there quietly, throw their dice around while packing up their army after forfeiting a game on turn two, to literally crying.

For me personally, its taken me a few years to mature up and realize while yes, its a competitive game, its still a game meant for you to enjoy and have fun at. So usually I will try to laugh off a loss while damning my luck and do what I can to learn from it, or just get really loud and make jokes when winning (this is my usual personality so its not to douchy I assure you.)

Every now and then though, I will get real quiet and a tad angry, usually when I go up against a TFG, rule nazi, or a kid thats driving me nuts.

What are your usual emotional reactions when playing this game? and what are some of the extremes you have seen?

1.Throwing dice at a wall and shattering them.
Tau gunline just couldn't kill my plague marines...

2.Plasma Cannon Barrage hits every model in a Broadside unit, the Ethereal is attached, he rolls cover save and fails instant killing him...with 80% of the army running close to the board...and eventually off it.

3.Just light aggitation usually. Cursing or saying things like "I'm gonna throw this army away"...though no one does that here.

Generally win/lose I go into Run-down mode and highlight the good and the bad.

This is a little story about four people named Everybody, Somebody, Anybody, and Nobody.
There was an important job to be done and Everybody was sure that Somebody would do it.
Anybody could have done it, but Nobody did it.
Somebody got angry about that because it was Everybody's job.
Everybody thought that Anybody could do it, but Nobody realized that Everybody wouldn't do it.
It ended up that Everybody blamed Somebody when Nobody did what Anybody could have done.

I'm actually quite a brilliant loser. There's nothing wrong with losing well. It sure beats being a bad winner.

If winning was the reason I was in the hobby, I'd have left it in 1987.

It's a game. It doesn't affect my moods whether I win or lose.

When losing i usually play mind tricks on the other player(s) so the think they will loose and then they usually do
(mainly because if i didnt play mind tricks i would take all the dice and shove them up the other players )

btw: i dont mind losing

When I win, I'm happy - after all, I'm pleased that my army list has done well. But even when I lose, I don't see any reason to get really mad or pissed off. Heck, even if my luck was crap the whole game, I'm still able to laugh it off knowing that my army can do better if it had better luck. The only way I get really peeved is if my opponent is a jackass, and makes fun of my list because it lost...or if he's playing an army for the sake of being a jackass with it. Case in point, the sole reason my friend plays Necron is because he knows how irritated they tend to make his opponents when an entire round of shooting is lost on the Crons standing up on the next turn.

I'm a good loser, though some things just completely pissed me off in a recent campaign. EG first 3 matches

1) vs CSM. turn 6, if the game ends I win, if it doesn't, I phase out. Guess which happened.
2) vs Eldar. Game ends with Destroyer Lord downed when contesting objective (Killed in combat with Guardians-twice!) and lose on moral victory
3) vs SM-1 inch away from contesting middle objective having been locked in combat for about 3 turns.

I'm a really calm player. When I'm winning I'm jovial, when I'm losing I'm sagely. There is always a story to be told, and something to be learned, so no game is ever a loss. I run with a good group, and I think the worst tempered player in loss is the Tyranid player. All he does, though, is snap at people who hover around him after the game. He then goes and broods on the lost game, but he always comes back for another go, to see if he learned his lesson properly.

when I lose, I do get angry. I try my best to channel it positively. If I am beaten fairly, I get angry with myself, I cannot honestly blame my opponent for doing something right.
If my opponent is cheating, I'll forfeit, if he wants a win without trying he can have it.

I have lost or simply not won due to shoddy rules. KP and "half strength or less still scores" in particular. I get very angry at that, due to the fact that those responsible are out of strangling range.

Wierd huh?

People are like dice, a certain Frenchman said that. You throw yourself in the direction of your own choosing. People are free because they can do that. Everyone's circumstances are different, but no matter how small the choice, at the very least, you can throw yourself. It's not chance or fate. It's the choice you made.

@Cheese: ...heh heh...*shifty looks*

As for me, I simply can not stand it if someone brags about thier victory over another. I don't mean "It was awesome when my Captain took on the Avatar and beat him" I mean those TFG that go "I wiped the floor with him, he sucked. IT was so funny watching him fail."

I feel that the best attitude at the end of the game is a handshake and a good laugh over the quirky moments of the game. It's those moments that should take precedence over the victory or loss.

I get very used to losing so mostly just blame the dice/ my lack of skill/ hindsight.

I have some friends though that sulk and complain like you wouldn't believe! There is one guy (you all know one) who is a total rules Nazi and then goes and does whatever suits him when it is his turn as long as noone notices. The amount of times I have argued with him because he 'forgot' or 'didn't know' something is ridiculous. Having a little brother there that never disagrees with you doesn;t help either. I don't mind losing a good game. If I get outplayed, I'm fine with that. But I really hate it when dice go against me.

Example: A great 40K player (the infamous pink -insert army here- player, who recently came in 7th at the UKGT, congrats) used to show up for RTTs at my FLGS. I pulled round 1 against him once, and we had an equal number of Zerk squads/CSM(he had PM) squads.

I went first, and on turn 2, one of his Zerk Rhinos shuffled into pop/charge the squad range. I watched him spot the mistake during my movement phase-one of my zerk squads disembarked, neither of my Raiders moved, and I moved a plasma CSM squad in Rhino up for support.

The general idea (and it was pretty obvious that he saw this) was I charge and wip a zerk squad/he charges and wipes mine/ I charge and wipe his, and then I'm up and over him. Both my Raiders and my CSM squad shoot the Rhino. 4 TLLC shots and 4 plasma shots fail to do anything but stun it.

He even made 4 5++ later in the game to save his Oblits from my Termicide. Well, after that, it was just a matter of trying for a draw as he cleaned me off the board rather nicely (basically using the exact same plan I was going to). Still an ok game (because he knew what he was doing with his army, as opposed to most of the local crowd).

While I can get grumpy if I'm losing really badly, I'm usually the most excited if the game is a close one, and whether each unit that is destroyed or not can have a large impact on the game. If I'm winning by a large margin, then I'm usually very quiet, and trying not to be ungracious.

i hate it when players cheat to make them win the game thats what makes me angry.
For example my men were 2 stories up. his troops were moving up the build but failed he got a 5. he rolled because some of his troops could make it in. he lost 50% of his squad. he rerolls the failure for difficult terrain and places a blast template on my guys and promotes them dead. I asked him for his codex he gave it to me and it was his thunder fire cannon that had already fired at that same squad that same turn and missed 4 times. Alright is that cheating because last time i checked bolters don't have ap 4 and strength 5

Asherian, please use proper capitalization and punctuation in your posts. It makes it a LOT easier to read that way. I am among the many who mock people for bad spelling here.

As long as it's a good game I'm happy. I get bored if I'm just wiping the floor with my opponent, and it's not fun to be getting cut to ribbons without a chance. If I kill something I've been determined to kill for a while, especially if I do so in an entertaining way, there will be a "BOOYA!" or something equivalent. This is usually accompanied by a fairly over the top gesture. I can emote a lot if I'm excited. I've had a few really, really frustrating games where I got unreasonably angry. One time I took my block of dice, took one out, and smashed it with a hammer to make an example to the other dice. Chessex dice are terrible. It's been a long time since I nerdraged at the game though.

I've had opponents throw their models then stomp on them. Even at my worst, I'd never go that far, although I did knock a predator off a table once. That wasn't totally intentional, mind you.

I've not lost a one on one game yet and to be honest 40k is already boring for me after playing 6 or 5 one on ones why because i play tyranids i hate ineffective swarms and love carnifex's.

Last game i just mowed down like 40 marines and my genestealer got lucky and made lysander fail 3 3+ invuls after a rouge barbed strangler made him fail a 2+ save.

I love winning but i just blame it on my love for large creatures and the tyranid codex not having anything else i want to use besides tyrants fex's and stealers. Sure I'm not a power gamer but in a way i am. I really want tyranids to have lots of new stuff and all things be effective in a certain way.

If not guess I am swapping to space puppies

I am the exact same way.

For some reason I only seem to be a poor loser when I'm playing against friends which is odd. Like I will often go out of my way not to go against them as for some reason the games are less enjoyable than playing against a stranger, even if he or she is better than my friends and I get the living daylights beaten out of me.

The only time its bad to be a loser is when your a gladiator..

I seen people throw tantrums.. these people are unstable and best avoided.

One of my friends did this and he was shunned for a while.

Never did it again.

Also I lose alot. Like alot. So I have experience. Losing also puts -5 into your arrogance characteristic. Unless you deflect it with Blame.. Then your a dumb ass and will be shunned.

When I lose I usually do a bit of cursing but I instantly begin to analyze my mistakes and how I can win next time.

However I have a friend that I really wish would learn to take the game a little less seriously. He basically spends no time researching tactics and throws together a list right when we are supposed to play and then he loses horribly. After this he proceeds to get all angry, talk about starting a new army, talk about how 40k sucks and is imbalanced, then go into this gaming depression that is relly annoying

If I'm doing well I trying not rub it in, if I'm doing badly I usually curse my luck or memory for forgetting something my squad had that could have helped. I don't have a tactical bone in my body, so I lose a lot, I let a lot stuff they forget, slide for my opponents as most of my games are friendly games. I like tinkering with lists and modeling/painting aspect of the hobby but playing I'm starting to like less and less. It is weird that when you play some friends sometimes they seem ruder with you than if they were playing a complete stranger. I'd hate to quit though and give up/sell some 4 whole painted armies I spent so much time on. Curse you GW. I want to quit spending but they keep pulling me back in. (Godfather? lol).

It rolled a one. He ate it.
We all laughed. (So did he.)

I know I'm a noob, and I know I SUCK at 40k. I actually take great amusement in my Marines' demise. It was like a train wreck tonight watching the Dark Eldar Wytches assault yet another Tac Marine squad. I kept saying 'Oh god, they're gonna DIE' in between bouts of hysterical laughter. (And boy did I ever get my arse handed to me.)

I keep a pretty light attitude about losing. I kind of try to set goals (destroy all the DA skiffs, make sure the sniper scouts survive until the end of the battle, etc) and if I can make those, I consider it a win. It might be a bit bass-ackwards but it's a place to start.
