You know, it's a sad state of affairs when I've posted so little in my blogs that I have to go to my profile in order to find them again.

Well, trying to drag myself out of the painting doldrums. With some encouragement from friends, I've decided to do a few one-night-projects. i.e. little projects that can be finished up in a night or so, just so I can feel like I'm making some progress on the mountain of figures I have to paint. Many of these are simple little tabletop exercises... rebasing, touching up figures purchased used or traded for in order to make them fit in with my own work, etc. I'm hoping that if I get some of these mini projects completed it'll help me get ready to take on some larger projects in the near future.

So, without further adeau (sp?)... tonight's project. A little (very little) touching up of a grot artillery piece I painted a long time ago, then placed on a very fancy base. I'll eventually get all three of these done. Probably sooner rather than later. These aren't a priority for any army... but I had been fielding them with my grot version of my bad moons and I thought some snazzy bases would make them just that much nicer. The figures are definitely painted to a low tabletop standard... the base... a bit better than that. (figure that one out!)

I was originally going to put the little grot on the tongue of the gun, but since I had to offset the gun to get it to sit evenly on the base, I set the grot to the side in order to balance things out (though I guess you can't really see that from this angle).

I love your old collection of OOP miniatures gits! Also really liking that base, even if it is square.

It's what I had lying around. It's actually a pretty cool base, just gets covered up by the gun.

Nah, its a pre-molded base. I just painted it and added the flora.

The gun (actually, everything) is brighter here in the photo that it looks in RL... product of light box & two really bright lights. However... it is a very primitive paint job. I might tweak it a bit, but probably limit it to some black wash at the seams to deepen the distinction between plates. Please keep in mind that these are supposed to be quick, simple little projects... not complete re-paints of old figures. Just puttin' lipstick on the pig is all.

Hope you're not using expensive lippy then Gits, last time I tried that the porker ate my best Rimmel Purple#9

Obviously it's cool, coz it's old-skool

Did you re-paint anything on it, or was it purely a clean-up operation? Either way, good idea to ease yourself back into painting mode, hope it works for you.

I did add some details, but very basic. I painted the rim on the dials and the little pointer thingies inside (which you can't see). Painted a few bits metallic silver here and there (highlighted and washed), which you also can't see. Put a highlight on the orange tanks which doesn't show up in the photo... and put some copper on the tube hanging under the barrel of the gun... which isn't really obvious.

So no, I did nothing to improve the figure.

Actually, I am quite pleased with the way it turned out. I'll give a little more attention to the gun, but I think a unit of three of these will be very nice looking.

Everyone approve of the little grot cannoneer?? He was a last-minute add but I think he helps the feel of the figure.

That is an excellent idea to easy back into painting. How many figures do you have ready to paint? As it turns out, I've got almost 990 points worth of minis ready to paint. We could egg each other on in a bit of keep-up, or something like that, what do ya say?

Tonight's mini-project... the second zapp gun... with a pretty significant re-paint of both guns (though only part of the work is visible). That's Iffy's work on the second grot. Believe it or not, the photo is actually in excellent focus, it just doesn't look that way when posted here on the blog.

But you say "Gits, fix the black smudge on the tip of the left-hand gun barrel."
And I say "I would, but in RL that black smudge isn't there!"

Now the question is.. "Where is the third one of these and how in the heck did I get them to look this way in the first place?" (the last one isn't painted yet)

It's rarely a mistake to add a bit of free-hand, even something this simple.

The new barrels look ace

You definitely need the grots on the base, the mischevious little buggers complement the dakka.

Tin bitz, devlan, tin bitz, mithril, devlan?

I think it was an undercoat of tin bitz with a kind of super thin, wettish dry brush of boltgun metal... then aged for like... 3 years on the shelf. It's the last part that worries me a bit.

Fantastic work Gits, always good to see your stuff. I really like the patina on the artillery for the grots, shame i don't seem to know anyone who owns those arty pieces. Are good in this edition?

Thanks mekbadzappa!

Yes, I think so. Zap guns. A bit random but fun and very appropriate for grots. They actually got much better in 6th thanks to the grot gunners getting a collective increase in toughness when manning the guns (unless that's been changed by FAQ).

One more to do. I've got an old lifta-droppa from the same era that I've been using as the third zap gun, but now that I'm doing them up nicely I feel I should make an effort to find and paint the proper style of gun.

Also, Zzaps in general, both Wagon mounted and towed, got a fairly significant buff, in that their "Always causes Shaken (or Stunned, can never remember which is which) on a hit" means that they still stop vehicles on Glances, which pretty much nothing else does, even on Pens that's nice. Essentially, they guarantee an effect if they hit.

Thanks for the clarification Anvil!

OK, new today. Yet another installment in the long line of random projects that I'm trying to finish up... Had a friend from my FLGS donate a couple of old burnas and a metal nob to the cause when he heard I was looking for them (thanks Ben). I love "rescue projects" where I start with old figures and fix them up a bit. These weren't bady painted, just a little worse for wear... so I gave them some freshening up, some new highlights & washes.... added the copper. The end result I really like. The skin is much more vibrant that I usually manage and the greens and browns really work well together.

I did find the thrid Zap Gun. Amazingly in a bitz drawer labeled "ork artillery"... go figure. In any case it's assembled and awaiting priming & I'm working on the base.
