So... if you haven't had your fill... wyfox and I are in a small local tournament tomorrow using a variation of Adepticon rules. I dug up the display board that Ice Angel made for our first Adepticon and put it to good use. Here's my display for tomorrow.

Sorry, been working on this for months... have to milk it for all it's worth!

Amazing Gits, amazing, I have a few questions on the camera settings etc. IE What are they so when the time comes for my next army shot I can get a nice looking shot like yours!

Have an SLR for start helps (though mine is of course, digital).

Set on "A" for aperature priority. Set the F-stop as high as you can get it (i.e. close the aperature down as low as you can get) for increased depth-of-field. Have a tri-pod. Lastly use some kind of automatic shutter release (either a remote or timer).

You need to mess with the light and white balance. I have my camera set so it spot meters the light from a single point rather than taking the average of the entire frame. That way if I need to I can stick a block of wood or something in front of the light sensor to artificially force the camera to take a photo at the right shutter length (usually 1-2 seconds).

Termies you say? I say yay!

Would love to see your take on termies, really (REALLY) hope you go for the camo pattern on at least one squad Like a tactical squad, cause that fits in being tactical and all that

Great looking army Git. Both the larger and the smaller. When you calculated the 4450 what codex did you use?

Good luck with the tournament. Take lots of pictures if you're able. It's nice to see my horrible attempt at a display board is still getting some use, nice addition with the ruins as a back drop. Have you thought about where you're going to set up your defense line on Solar's giant display?

Been thinking about that myself Red. My current thought is that it would be an appropriate scheme for the cyclone MLs. Not sure (fluff-wise) about doing a whole squad in tranquility camo... but I'll work a least a couple of guys in.

Well, I'm all packed up for the tournament today. Some pretty competitive gamers in this group and there will be open tables with very little terrain (almost none sight-blocking). That works against our team as a whole though it's nice for my long-ranged stuff (which never survives the other team's first turn of shooting... so I guess it doesn't help me all that much). I'm lucky in that there are 3 different FLGSs within 45 minutes of where I live. No complaints about the crews at each one... all great guys. I do have hopes that I'll do well in the painting competition, but I've heard that there's a Nid army floating around that will win hands-down if it shows up. That... and for some reason my army never "views" as well in-person as it looks on Dakka. I think I paint to the level of a 6" tall photograph of a 1" figure and much of the work gets completely lost at tabletop viewing distance. Even I've scored other armies that have a much "cruder" paint job higher than mine because they simply look better on the table.

Should be a fun day regardless. Wyfox and I have discussed "The Debochle vs. Demons" battle and I think we have some ideas for things we could have done better that would have made things a bit more interesting.

OH... and I bought some milled aluminum flying-base posts off of e-bay which have arrived. I'll be using them today & will give a full review some time later.

Just a brief update before I go to bed (my back is killing me).

The Labrynth, Baraboo, Wisconsin. 15 teams of two people (so, 30 participants), everyone (no matter what race) are considered "brothers in arms" to keep things simple. 3 rounds, each with a different deployment, objectives, etc. 1000 pts per team-mate but you effectively share a single FOC (so not quite Adepticon, but close).

WyFox has a competitive nid list with 2 tervies, a dakka flyrant and some yarmgrls (however that's spelled). I have my fluffy marine list.

We miraculously draw two fluffy CSM/IG armies in the first two rounds and win comfortably. We spend our last round at the TOP table (a first for me). Big surprise as we thought there was no way in heck we'd be competitive. We play the #1 all nid army with 3 tervies, 3 flyrants, yarmgrls (sound familiar?), a Doom, trygon & hive guard.

We lose, but only by 2 points (we think they'd beaten the previous two teams badly... tabling at least one of them). So, because of the loss we don't place in the top 3... however... we did far better than we had any right to. We played all 3 games very solidly. Mistakes were small and few. Best part for me is that my army (Dev's and LS Typhoons) made a big impact in every single game. Tac squads were pretty useless... the plasma cannon/flamer configuration just doesn't work very well... BUT... my God the Devs... When they don't get killed in the very first turn by some damn flyer... holy smokes! Wyfox and I work together very well. He makes all the hard decisions & I sit back and roll dice!

While I do not like to give up the anti-terminator punch of the plasma cannons or the anti horde of the flamer... I'm seriously considering dropping the flamer, PC and power sword from each tac squad in favor of a ML with flak and a melta gun. I could to this without having to paint any extra figures. It gives me the ability to move and fire my heavy weapon as well as having some close range punch from my specialist.

I have some pics (no bat reps though... too much going on).

And... I won the painting competition! First time for that too!

Great tournament, wonderful people, great venue! Had a rousingly good time followed by a jalapeno bacon burger and a green beer at the pub across the way with a bunch of the crew to relive past glories and/or tragedies. Can't wait for the next one!

Happy St. Patrick's Day everyone!

Well, I have one more practice tournament before Adepticon... so I think I'll make the switch and we'll see how it plays. That way I've got an apples-to-apples comparison. I like having the plasma cannons... but they can't move and shoot & they can't skyfire. In a tactical squad that really limits their utility.

Revenent Reiko wrote:Congratz Gits and Wyoming, sounds like you had a blast! And double congrats for the painting comp, knew you had it in the bag (regardless of whether you think the army looks as good OTT as it does on dakka or not )

I don't think it was "in the bag"... apparently I only won the painting competition by 1.5 pts or so over two other armies, so it was pretty tight. There were some nicely painted armies to be sure, best part is I got to play against 3 of them.

Ignatius-Grulgor wrote:Been slowly working my way from page 1 for a while now, just in time for the blog to basically be finished apparently! Everything looks incredible, and I can't help but not be surprised at a very well deserved painting award.

Thanks for staying with it Ignatius... and thanks for speaking up too! I'm afraid this blog hasn't reached it's final conclusion, and my never... I've got hundreds of figures left to paint.

I've got my camera and will be pulling some photos off & writing up some skeleton battle reports (not enough tho post on their own but I'll them here). If someone would be so kind as to bump my thread so I can have a fresh post with the batreps... I'd be ever so grateful.

Thanks all! Happy to have at least one win under my belt.

So, here are some very sketchy batreps... just general ideas actually. All of our opponents were GREAT, fun people who I would gladly play any day of the week. We laughed a lot & helped each other out when we could.

Game 1:
Objectives. Blood Angels and Imperial guard. Basalisky-thing, Manticore, 2 vendettas, Storm Raven & a 10 man assault terminator squad w/ apoth & libby, tac squad, couple of elite guard w/ plasma in chimeras... oh, and an autocannon blob.

We deploy opposite one another. My heavies are on the left behind the wall, my rhinos w/ tac squads on the right.

The BA terminator mob advances towards the center objective while the rest defends their deployment zone. I assume they were waiting for the flyers to arrive before moving forward, hoping that we'd waste ourselves on the terminators.

Shooting for me goes well, I blow up the basilisk variant on my first turn of shooting, 2 Valks the turn they come in and the chimera across from the Dev's once they start moving forward to bum rush the objective in front of my Dev's (by that time the Dev's were gone save the sergeant and Ezekiel... it was the Typhoons that got the Chimera). Wyomingfox's nid horde moved forward to engage the terminators.

Meanwhile, I decide to bum rush the left flank of the guard with my two tactical squads.

Both Rhinos take a hull point and one loses it's storm bolter, but otherwise arrive unscathed. In the meantime, the Tyranids (with a bit of supporting fire from my Devs), engague and eventually wipe out the terminator squad... hitting them with double-enfeeble and I think I hit them with the roll that makes them re-roll their saving throws one round. Took a couple of turns but the nids proved to be too much for the outnumbered and diminished Blood Angels.

The Tac Squads arrive on the right and I realize that I have NOTHING to take out those vehicles aside from one thrown krak grenade per squad and bolter fire. One rhino is wrecked but it delivers it's cargo in-tact. I fan out in an attempt to keep the guard from challenging the objective right behind us & so I can charge next turn.

At that point we ran out of time. We win something like 7:2.

Game 2:
Chaos SM & IG (all female), objectives (mainly)
Defiler, 4 oblits, 2 full squads of CSM in rhinos, huge guard blob 2 camo cloaks, 3 Valkyries w/ a couple of plasma vet squads, winged D-prince. Best "team" paint job that I saw. Very cool armies.

The zig-zag wall is there because Wyfox and I couldn't agree on how to deploy it. He wanted it up front so he could have cover for his guys moving forward. I wanted it far back so my Dev's would have a safe place to hide from the incoming flyers. So, I just stretched it out so it could to both!

Wyfox pushed forward on the right while I laid down fire support on the left. Devs & Typhoons combined to kill the Defiler, 2 Valks, 1 oblit and a couple of chaos marines and guardsmen. Wyfox took care of the rest. Having nids as my ally solves just SO many problems with my army.

I think we won this one 11:1?? Not sure.

Game 3: Top Table vs. #1 team! (woo-hooo!)
Kill Points, lotsa big bugs, 2 flyrants, 3 tervies, trygon, Doom, etc.

Here's the set-up... I'm just trying to stay the heck away from the nids & have good fields of fire.

The battle ensues... I spend a lot of time shooting at two flying tyrants. We down 1 fairly quickly, the other is much more stubborn. Unfortunately we slowly lose ground. Not helped by Yarmgrls not coming in until turn 4 and HORRIBLE dice rolling on my part early on. Doom pods down a sucks his way to 11 wounds. Unfortunately, my heavy stuff can't see him to shoot. Near the end (we ran out of time) I finally got clear shots at a Tervie and took it out in 1 turn, taking a gaunt squad out with it. We were on the run but if the game had continued we would have made a fight of it. Still, I believe they would have won no matter the number of turns.

This is turn 3... I think.

We lose 7 to 5.

That's all. Wyfox was a great partner and the brains of the outfit. The two armies worked together really well. Lots o fun!!
