Ya right They removed glazes and different colors years ago. Not to mention their old smelly Primer, for priming your minis by hand. Also many colors of metal paint like blue and green(look at the bottom picture.) Funny how all these old paints are still usable and contain more paint in each bottle than now.
Some of my old minis showed up to show off their 20yr old paint jobs.

I started switching my paint collection over to Model Color & Game Colors years ago. I think in the early 2000's when their paints started to dry up and the lids were hard to open.
From a business standpoint it doesn't make any sense to change a successful long standing trade mark. Those paint names have stayed relatively the same for 25 years. Even the Game Color line adopted similar names to make it easy to match.
Take a look at all those old paints I still have from 25yrs ago that are still usable. I think GW has added a planed obsolescence component to their business model since Mr. Kirby showed up. FineCrap is another example of this. Mini's that can't be repainted and resold.

Yup, the ones I have (the pot-styles under the banshee) are all good and ready to be used, 15 years later.
I can't remember any of the new versions of paint pot- since the advent and then killing of of those stupid threaded caps- where I actually ran out of paint. They just all dry out and go bad and I have to re-buy.
And it's not because "I paint out of the pot so it dries out as I paint", because I do that with all the old pots, too, and they are all fine.

I also have to add that I also never left the lids open while painting and a lot of mine would still dry up to the point of uselessness after a few months without being used.

Though they were the old black lids.
The manager in my local GW said they were there to keep the paints open.
Also for those people who were protesting the lack of Devlan Mud equivalent, I don't think our store had any of the pots of Agrax Earthshade there...we did have Nuln Oil (new Badab Black) and Carroburg Crimson (the Baal Red replacement, although it has a bit more purple in it to allow it to actually SHADE red). A guy who paints White Panthers at the store compiimented the Ceramite White as being good enough to coat over black alone without having to paint Astronomican Grey on first, while I admittedly only had a chance to try the Mephiston Red, which was a lot brighter than Mechrite Red but after applying the Carroburg wash it took it right down to the old Mechrite shade again in my experience.
Washes can now be shaken and not foam up like the current ones do, and there didn't appear to be any sign of separation in the Base colours like the Foundation paints are prone to do. Although I didn't get to use the metallics...Leadbelcher (the replacement for Boltgun Metal) looked darker in the pot than it actually did when applied on the model, something that relieved a few that were like "Oh my god, the paints don't match".
However, I didn't have much luck with the texture paints although I would suggest it's also something that would be be better applied from the palette than the pot (in fact the Youtube video GW put up seems to suggest the same from the example DVD footage). From what I can gather though the samples are there for another month or so, so we will have time to experiment with the other colours at other times.
In all there seemed a pretty positive reception at our store although we did have some people buying old paints to try and stock up in case of emergencies.

I managed to buy 6 devlan mud a week ago.
That said, I just got back from GW and Ceramite White is THE ONLY white paint you will ever need. It covers insanely well. As does Macragge Blue.
Keep in mind that I am in no way a fanboy of GW, hate their business practices, but this they seem to have right.
I tried the Waywatcher Green glaze, it's interesting. I can only see it working on a white base coat.
The dry paints are meh. Drybrushing isn't a technique that I use on anything besides chainmail so nothing big here for me.
The texture paints don't seem worthwhile as you will need quite a few pots to base an army, which can be done cheaper through traditional means(albeit the texture paints may save you time, which may be more important to you).
Sadly it was lunch time as I showed up so I have to go back to finish my marine and see how the other paints stack up.

Buttons Should Be Brass, Not Gold!
|
Tried 'em out at the local GW.
Base paint: Covers better than old standard formula. Doesn't cover as well as foundation paint. Dries thinner though, so less detail obscuring than foundation paint.
Layer Paint: Mixes well with the base. Not sure if there is any difference in formula as I didn't think to try it as a base coat.
Texture Paint: Doesn't contain actual grit. Only a clumping medium. Watering it down makes it a thin and unusable mess, so don't water it down. Most likely will have poor usage life, as it doesn't appear to be fixable by adding water.
Dry Paint: Appears to have a thickening medium added. Didn't try it, as I'm not big into drybrushing. Suspect that it will have similar properties to the texture paint.
Washes / Glaze: Doesn't seem much different than before, but the black one that I used dries more matt than Badab black.
Not a fan of the pots. Wish they'd issue coloured tops to keep the types apart. Apparently they'll be issuing a conversion chart. The standard paints didn't WOW me. The gimmicky paints are just that - gimmicks. They didn't have enough metalics for me to determine if the metalics are still top of the line.
Changing the entire paint line like this is pretty annoying to me as a veteran hobbyist, as I've fallen into the habbit of relying on certain colours as base. Certain specialty colours have no comparable version, such as Hawk Turquoise. The new super paint set is almost $200 over what the old super paint set was offered for. Money-wise, for base colours, I think P3/Reaper Colour is a better value in general. Good thing you can get the old GW colours from third party manufacturers.

Shades look awesome as gak. I like washes just as much as the rest of you (hell, every single model in my army is almost dunked in one wash or another), but I'm certainly willing to try something new. Honestly, I think the Washes were something they could've left alone, but if they claim it's better, I might as well give it a shot. Just because you've painted the same way for XX years doesn't mean you're doing it the only way there is

I want to see just how well the colours compare old to new. I'm halfway through my ork army painting and about to start on both my chaos warriors and my dark eldar and want to be sure that I'm not going to run out of a particular colour in the middle of a project.
I'm concerned that the Sotek Green looks like a halfway point between jade green and hawk turquoise and that the lothern blue is not as light as ice blue was?

This better be a mistake or I am writing to GW to tell them they have gone off the rails.

Mephiston Red is about 19 times better than Blood Red. It has amazing coverage. It's much brighter than Mechrite so I don't compare the two, haven't tried Khorne Red which is more Mechrite colored.
The bases cover just as well as foundations, at least the 2 I used did: Ceramite White and Macragge Blue. Both had excellent coverage.
Carroburg Crimson is an amazing wash "shade". It's like a red Devlan Mud. Nothing like the old Red wash.
Glazes were very bright and pool into recesses more than shades do.
Texture DOES have actual sand in it. I can see the appeal there for those in a rush to complete models, but I'm not that crowd.
Dry's are meh, but then I don't drybrush as I said before.
The only metal they had in store was the Leadbelcher(Boltgun Metal). Seemed about the same as before if a little darker of a shade. Pigment was just as fine as before, so hopefully good things there in metallics.

Honestly the two aren't anywhere near the same. Mephiston is a very bright red, where Mechrite is a darker red, that is from firsthand experience with both. Khorne Red looks like it will be a closer match to Mechrite, but I haven't actually seen the Khorne Red yet.

indeed. And for those who think that you can trademark or copyright the word "ultramarine": http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ultramarine
The name derives from Middle Latin ultramarinus, literally "beyond the sea" because it was imported from Asia by sea.[1]
The first recorded use of ultramarine as a color name in English was in 1598
