Having actually worked in a job where mixing paint was one of my duties, I would say that while this is correct in theory, in actual practice it's not quite as simple as you seem to be making out. Coverage and drying do make a difference to the colour, as do the types of pigments and the base being used.

Yes, you might be able to walk in to a paint mob and have them mix up something that looks spot on... but once you paint it on, it can wind up a very different colour depending on the actual formulation of the paint.

Thanks for the review Orki!

The GW manager i spoke to last weekend was kinda reluctant to admit that the new colours weren't really gonna match up to the old colours, but admit it he did. Along with what will probably be the company line of 'but these new paints are so much better why not go back and re-paint what you have!' :/

As long as they don't change it too soon, the VGC range is an acceptable match for the old Citadel paints for anyone who wants to finish off their half-painted armies.

A small bit of news, apparently the bottles won't all be getting the shark fin, only the washes and glazes are getting those.

That's what the Black Shirt at my local GW says at least, so unless someone has it on greater authority that they will...

Why don't people read threads?

Same color, different properties.

because the color could be off by a hair and I don't wanna lose my devlan mud?

Plus this thread is 47 pages long?

Short answer: stock up between now and the 7th. I bought 6 pots of devlan the day they announced new paints.

After over a decade of going through bad codex changes, poor releases and many staff members I want to punch square in the face... messing around with the paints has to be the final straw for me.. I now officially hate GW.

Why rename them? What is the actual point? Established names and identities.. Chaos Black and Skull White were better known than any other product they had save maybe white dwarf and space marines.

While I'm absolutely sure that's going to be the company line, me response would be, "Umm.....no?"

A good option to get a color that matches Boltgun Metal is to get a bottle of VGC "Gunmetal". It's what I plan on doing.

I dunno. My LGS has a very slow GW turnover, so I am thinking of running back there and buying at least another pot of the "old version" of every color I normally rely heavily upon, like Codex Grey, Boltgun metal, and a couple of others I feel I can't do without - or just don't want a bad match for.

For instance, I inherited a 4,000pt Dark Eldar army, that a buddy already assembled and primed with Chaos Black spray. While Abaddon Black might end up to be the coolest thing ever, I like the fact that the old Chaos Black in a pot matches the spray quite well.

I just wish the old colors of GW paint would store well in their bottles. Hrmmm..maybe it's finally time for an order of empty Vallejo bottles.......

I hear you on the staff members haha I avoid my nearest GW store in Preston for that reason, either going to the local stockist, or Manchester (where the staff seem a lot more friendly)

The names now are trademarkable, you probably can't trademark 'Blood Red', 'Skull White' etc because they're so commonplace. Having seen the paints though, they do seem a marked improvement on the old lot, I'm waiting to buy a range of yellow's because of that reason, I've got loads of 'Nids to paint but sunset yellow over black isn't going very well (on my test 'Nid)

The GW site still have the Chaos Black/Skull White sprays, maybe they're rolling out a change for those later in the year because they don't sell as often as regular paints?

In paints such as Boltgun Metal, there are little flakes of metal that make the paint appear metallic, like you see in car paint. The size and concentration of the flakes makes the paint more or less shiny/glittery, and smaller flakes are also easier to airbrush, as the larger flakes clog up the nozzle.

So does it affect brush on properties?

I can't speak from experience, as I have yet to see the new paints, but Orki says they look inferior, so then yes, it does affect how it will look. And when Orki makes a statement like that, I tend to believe him.

Isee that they are releasing colours that look close to a true medium blue rather than the purples they had in the old set. The one downside is that Necron Abyss actually makes a marvellous glaze for making a true blue over Enchanted'. Is there an almost-equivalent among the new set?

If you are airbrushing mettalics forget GW,Vallejo all them
Look into Alclad II Lacquer light years ahead of the rest.
You can litterally comb your hair in the chrome finish.
The shiney metals need gloss black undercoat, but the regular work just fine over matt black.
Priming is a Must!!! Lacquer will craze straight plastic
And these are not brushable /airbrush only.

I just caugh sight of the latest Wayland newsletter, they are offering the whole lot in a Battlefoam pack 216 for £311.

So a saving on GW plus a better case. Not bad - not good enough for me to buy but not bad.

Yeah, I find it a bit of an odd decision by Wayland - the saving you would normally get is eaten up by the bag they are bundling with it so it ends up only being £20 cheaper than the 'official' GW one. I'm sure the bag is wonderful but I'm not sure I have that much of a burning desire to transport my paints around the country to the extent where I would buy a premium foam case for them...

Still, they are doing the complete paint range sans bag though and that ends up being considerably cheaper than GW.
