I think they mean new model kits when they say 4 boxes. Valkyrie, Cadian Command, Catachan Command, Ratlings (maybe box maybe blister). Though Sentinels, Cadians and Catachans are modified, they generally don't lump those sorts of redone kits in with the rest.

In case anyone missed this tidbit from that thread, it is at the end and kind of tucked away "If you looked at the "available now" pages at the Guard Codex entry....there was a preview spread next to the cover of the Leman Russ page. Small, but the usual "you'll make out the names but not the rules" size. And lo and behold what Russ variants did I see? Russ, Demolisher, Vanquisher, Exterminator, Executioner, Eradicator and Punisher. I guess there was some truth to those Spanish rumours after all eh "

I would have been happy enough with the re-intorduction of the Exterminator and Griffon back into actual dex.
It was greta having most of the variants available online from GeeDub but nice to have them back in the main book.
I know i will be part of the minority when agree'ing that IG prolly don't need more variant Russ's but the new kit should still be nice. The current amror lists plus Ext and Griffon would have covered every eventuality without a Heavy 20 wpn hehe. (praying thats a translation mistake)

I have it on good authority that the vehicles are all confirmed except for the deathstrike. Well, assuming there are 2 new variants for each of the Hellhound, Basilisk, Leman Russ, and Leman Russ Demolisher. I've also heard that the sprues have actually been recut and that the new squad boxes will be 10 men total, including heavy weapons. Take those for what they are worth. Oh, and the Heavy 20 isn't a mistake from what i've heard.

OK, assuming that the Spanish GT rumors are true, and we have each tank becomes a 3-in-1 kit, what to take?
Hellhound
AV12/12/10
R12" S6 AP4 Heavy 1 Template (auto-hit)
R24" S8 AP1 Heavy 1 Blast Melta "Devildog"
R0" S1 AP3 Heavy 1 Template Poison (2+) "Banewolf"
IMO, the Poison template is a total non-starter when the other two options have range. I think the Multi-Melta Blast is the most versatile, especially with 24" range. So I need to make a couple more turrets. But overall, it's a small surprise that the Hellhound didn't simply move to Large Blast.
Leman Russ
AV14/13?/10 - may move 6" and fire all or move 6+d6" and fire none
R72" S8 AP3 Heavy 1 Large Blast Ordnance
R48" S7 AP4 Heavy 4 twin-linked "Exterminator"
R72" S8 AP2 Heavy 1 Large Blast +1d6 AP "Vanquisher"
R36" S6 AP4 Heavy 1 Large Blast no cover "Eradicator"
Slowing the Russ to 6+d6" "all-out" movement? Really? I guess GW really does want this to be a rolling gun platform. But IMO, it should have been:
- d6" move, shoot all
- 6" move, shoot 1 + defensive
- 6+d6" move, shoot 1 defensive
- 12" move, shoot none
Oh, well.
OTOH, if the side armor is bumping to AV13, wow, this thing just got a lot better in a shootout. Of course, AV10 says it still gets PWNT in HtH, but them's the breaks for IG.
The Exterminator is still inferior to the Battlecannon, while the Vanquisher is only good as an anti-tank sniper. The Eradicator seems to be a joke with short range, less S, less AP but still burning (ha!) a Heavy slot? Battlecannon still has best overall utility unless you're facing Stompas or somesuch and need to punch AV14 reliably. If you play Apoc, it's probably worth making an alternate Vanquisher barrel.
Demolisher
AV14/13/11
R24" S10 AP2 Heavy 1 Large Blast Ordnance
R24" S5 AP- Heavy 20 "Punisher"
R36" S7 AP2 Heavy 3 (Blast?) "Executioner"
Punisher is an Ork tank to kill Orks, but it's stupid to waste a Heavy slot on R24" AP- guns when you can get a Platoon of them for the same price. No. Executioner has much better utility *if* it's Heavy 3 Blast - slap on the sponsons and that's a rolling Plasma Cannon Devastator Squad that makes DSing Termies cry. But once again, the Demolisher is always a good, basic fit.
Basilisk
AV12/10/10
R96" S9 AP3 Heavy 1 Large Blast Ordnance
G36" S10 AP2 Heavy 1 Large Blast Ordnance Barrage // R48" S10 AP1 Heavy 1 Blast +d6"AP "Medusa"
G24-240" S6 AP3 Heavy 1 Large Blast Barrage no cover "Colossus"
G12-48" S6 AP4 Heavy 1 Large Blast Barrage re-roll scatter "Griffon"
Griffon is cheap, but has very low utility, too bad. Colossus is rather specialized and only good against MEQs. Bassie is a solid standby. But the Medusa? And modal fire? We have a WINNAH!
cross-trades
It seems that there is considerable competition between various chassis for various duties. I don't think this will take too long to sort out, and don't really see the need, but eh, oh well. With this sort of force, Guard can a tleast set up for a very aggressive armored Blitzkrieg. That'd be interesting.

If these are true, and they might, I'm going to be a happy camper for already owning two converted Medusas. The only sad part is, following the old rules, they're not modeled for barrage fire. The Griffon, if cheap enough, might still be a competitive choice in some situations. The Colossus with its Ignore Cover ability might be the odd one out here, because well-placed or lucky barrages ignore many cover saves already (area terrain aside). I suspect the Medusa will be the most expensive one of these, with the Colossus settling somewhere slightly below the Basilisk.

All these new tanks are cool and all but I can't see me really owning too much else. Right now my goal is to squadronize my tanks for Apocalypse. getting my 3rd FW hellhound soon (if FW sends it soon that is), then I'll be working on getting 2 new russes, 2 new demolishers and 2 new basilisks. After that I might look into different tanks. I would really love to see them sell the new turret sprues separately so that you can have 1 tank and swap the guns around to have different tanks, but I know they're not gonna do that :(

The real question is if the Battlecannon and Demolisher are really Heavy 1 rather than Ordnance. If they can still only fire the Battle/Demo and nothing else since they are ordnance then the Eradicator and Executioner become solid options. I hope the vanquisher can get a BS4 somehow too. I cant see Punisher or Exterminator being used much either way.

Right, my question exactly as I can see I'm now going to have to take the Spanish rumors more seriously...
JohnHwangDD wrote:IMO, the Poison template is a total non-starter when the other two options have range. I think the Multi-Melta Blast is the most versatile, especially with 24" range. In the "Mkoll rumor thread" I posed the question about how does the new codex resolve the MSU-issue that IG suffer from when it comes to killing tanks. 'Cuz lascannons don't cut it like they used to. In 5E, you've got two choices to reliably kill tanks - HTH and melta. And I think that we may see quite a bit of the Devil Dog as it -does- resolve the tank killer issue for the Guard. Granted, you're using up valuable slots that you'd otherwise be taking for the Hellhounds you need for anti-infantry, but frankly, with the ability throw pies around, anti-infantry is not something that Guard are lacking.
JohnHwangDD wrote:The Exterminator is still inferior to the Battlecannon, while the Vanquisher is only good as an anti-tank sniper. I agree on this - while Heavy 4 for the Exterminator is better than it was before, the Battlecannon is still superior. Frankly, though, unless it's ridiculously overpriced, I think you'll also see a lot of Vanquishers as you're looking at AP2 Large Blast at 72" range. Why take Demolishers anymore when you can kill Eeq, Meq, Teq, and Tanks with one unit? I think the versatility will have a lot of appeal.
JohnHwangDD wrote:Punisher is an Ork tank to kill Orks, but it's stupid to waste a Heavy slot on R24" AP- guns when you can get a Platoon of them for the same price. The Punisher just seems ridiculous to me - just seems like it was designed to appeal to young players saying, "HEAVY 20!!!! HURRR!!!!" And yeah, if the Executioner plays out as rumored it will spit out a lot of plasma shots, but as John's said, the Demolisher is the more versatile of the choices.
JohnHwangDD wrote:Griffon is cheap, but has very low utility, too bad. Colossus is rather specialized and only good against MEQs. Bassie is a solid standby. But the Medusa? And modal fire? We have a WINNAH!
I'm less confident about my predictions for this, but I think as with the others discussed above, versatility will win out and the Medusa will be the most popular. You've only got 3 slots to fill - one of which may be used by a Leman Russ Squadron. With only two left, you've got to make some hard choices and the easiest ones to make are the ones that give you the most options.

Heavy 4 for the Exterminator makes Mech Tau and Mech Eldar cry. Battlecannons are only 1 shot, light mech fears lots of S7 and S8 shots - more cover saves to fail.
But, in general, I'd say the battlecannon is the better choice. If the Colossus is the only one to ignore cover, I think it'll be popular to deal with Orks w/ KFF.
