Are you trying to get this thread locked or something? Or trying to deter a creative mind from helping the gaming community? Please, the majority of Dakka is supporting and anxiously awaiting what Highland_Piper is working on.

The mods have not locked this thread, that is now five pages long, because it is not a bad thread. It does not break the dakka rules. Piper has not been warned by the mods to discontinue logging this project on Dakka. Actually, wait, YOU have been warned by the mods. Interesting. Get off your pedestal and stop putting other hobbyists down for their effort.

And to think that the distribution of a paper bastion is going to affect GW? The people that are going to use this are people who would not have bought bastions anyway. The bastion kit is vastly superior to anything paper can do, so the people who buy bastions because they are good quality will keep on buying bastions.

Highland_Piper, please don't let him deter you. Remember the whole slew of members who have posted in this thread who support your effort wholeheartedly.

It is still illegal. It is a fun project up until he redistributes the PDF and others then copy it. The reason it is illegal is he ripped 3d mods and textures from a copyrighted source. He didn't make it from scratch based upon his own ideas by eyeballing a physical object.

If the thread was simply about him showing off what he has made for himself, game on.

If the thread is a way to distribute his PDFs with questionable legal standing, then it breaks dakkas rules.

Rationalizing infringement is still infringement. All Augustus has suggested is for Highland_piper to design an original papercraft design and then distribute it. He could make bastions which serve the purpose that are not recreation of GW designs and trademarks. Make the 'Highland_piper Bastion/bunker' system and release that and everyone wins. (sounds like all he needs to do is use original textures)

Having trouble reading for content, nkelsch? Page 4 Highland_Piper has stated that he is remaking the texture and going to use offer in a white as well.

Of course that also brings up the point that, to my knowledge, nothing to date has been offered. No PDF link to plans. Right now this is still his personal terrain.

But hey, haters gotta hate.

No, I would like to disuade the OP from sharing the PDFs sure, but I want to talk about creating something unique. I also think a dissenting opinion is fair to share.

Also I would consider it quite a victory if I could get some of the other posters to see the perspective on copies, including the OP, and yourself. To that end...

I found myself in a similar situation recently, actually very much so, that I think is really prudent, allow me to show some more examples.

I really liked these infinity buildings a lot, Micro Art offers them:

One of the things I really liked about them was that they had a double layer, and could be used stacked, or separate and that would grant inside access to the 2nd layer.

Something that would be really ideal for that game! Microarts offers these for 29.52 Euro. About $50 a piece.

http://www.shop.microartstudio.com/district5-apartment-p-578.html

There were things I liked, and some I didn't, and 30 EURO is a lot. I could buy them, but I think I had the skill to do better. I wanted my buildings to have clear windows for example, and more than 1 stack able level. But I was inspired by the finish, look, and functionality of the pieces. So I decided to make my own set of terrain, incorporating some of the ideas of these pieces, like the stack able levels, the approximate size, some of the coloring and the use of hexagonal shapes.

I made my own infinity city from boxes I got from the container store that stack, I also made some from scratch, and I did paint jobs to match.

I even started a thread to share, and then after requests, how to do it with Dakka.

http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/412666.page

But I didn't take the graphics from the original piece I took my inspiration from and make a copy of it.

Maybe you like these, maybe you don't, maybe the casual observer wont care about Infinity at all, maybe the imperial bastions are cooler maybe not. None of that matters, the point is these are unique pieces, made from inspiration of an original and not copies.

It's not nearly that simple. Suffice it to say, in this case, that the moderators have reviewed this thread, and let it stand. Given that, the rest of you can move on to discussing the merits of the work, and extensions on the idea, or even (constructively) critiquing the execution.

<further discussion of copyright and/or Dakka rules, however, will be treated as off-topic, and (at least) summarily deleted; hopefully that is sufficiently clear>

@Highland_Piper : I'm definately enjoying your work. What I'm seeing here is an example of well thought out and executed cardstock building and I look forward to seeing much more of it and (should such a time ever come) would appreciate any template you care to release albeit detailed or simply plain black & white plans.

Being on a limited budget myself, I greatly appreciate the merits of card construction. Personally, I use card buildings as a temporary measure until I can afford the appropriate kit for items such as bastions, bunkers and ruined buildings. Once I am able to purchase said kit, the card building is retired from use. That said, I only use card for structures, not vehicles or playable proxies in armies.

On a closing note, I'd like to thank Janthkin. Your moderation of this thread thus far has been spot-on. You have shown your presence, stated clearly that this thread is under an appropriate level of monitoring and issued warnings, directives and advice where needed without resorting to an "Iron Fist" in the interests of a quiet life.

Very well played, sir. An example of moderation as it should be and a definite credit to the Mod Team

I'm going to clarify this (and I've not taken offence to your comment)

The 3D design was done from scratch. It is not an exact replica from either GW or DOWII. I built it from the ground up to fit within the parameters of my existing Card Stock terrain from World Works Games and my custom terrain. I do not have the knowledge of how to extract the DOWII 3D models nor do I want to. I like building scratch built terrain from the ground up. I've managed to base my design off of the GW Bastion/Fortress and then enhance it by adding a wall system, gates, 45 degree walls, and making the two buildings compatible allowing me to mesh the two together.

I am going to remake the textures. I used the texture from the game as it was faster and I did not have the time to devote to making the textures. Time is why it has not been finished. But I have enough skill in Photoshop and Illustrator to do a descent job of it.

As you can see they are not an exact match.

As for insinuations that I can't do original work here is some.

I like using card and mat board. It is cheap and recyclable. For those of you that want to use plasticard here is a suggestion. Print plans on full sheet label paper and stick it to plasticard.

Here are two reasons why I love using card

(I wish I never sold mine!)

It used to be expected to make your terrain from scratch even if you copied a GW design. I remember White Dwarfs that showed you how to do it.

---------------------------------------------------------------------
Back to the Bastion.

I've added some tabs and I'm making an Imperial Eagle that you can cut out and place over the entire side of the Bastion. I will post pictures of it soon. I've started the White Build with line drawings of the detail on it for helping with placement of 3D design. From there I will start to build up the textures. I'm expecting about 15+ layers of textures at 12 pages (for now) and it should take me quite some time to have the new textured version done.

Amazing work your knocking together. Stuff like this is for many years the bread and butter of hobby gaming. Before GW got it's massive 'pop culture' push or went uber commercial this is what it was always about. Heck back in the day and im talking way way waaay back, White Dwarf used to do loads of templates for things such as bunkers, and bits of terrain. They even did a template for a Baneblade. We are talking nearly 20yrs but that was the whole point behind the hobby. They give you the skeleton and you supply the meat for its bones.

I suppose some people would have the figures pre-painted and the game already won for you if they had their way. Great thread and keep doing you. Im sure one of the helpful MODS would step in and politely let you know if you over stepped the mark. Ignore the haters and keep inspiring others to make something. Even if i dont you the PDF's it's given me more ideas etc on how to tackle my own projects.

My computer is dying so it is putting a slight halt on this project. My netbook can't handle Adobe Illustrator or Photoshop so I can't continue it on my back up machine.

I started the white copy for printing and using foam and mat board and possibly plasticard (which I'm trying to source locally). The thought is to to use mat board for the main structure with foam board supports as not everyone can get perfect 45 and 90 degree cuts.

Here is a merging of the Fortress of Redemption and the Bastion into a forward assault bunker.

Is it Imperial enough? It's not modular like the Bastion but you could easily place a 10 man squad inside and a 10 man squad on the top.

I've come up with a brilliant idea! I'm going to purchase a Mitre Saw and a bunch of Rare Earth Magnets. I will build the Bastion out of 5mm PVC Board and Plasticard and place the magnets in the sides of the walls making it completely modular and with the ability to break it down!

The only problem I'm currently having is the tower to the Fortress is 8 " tall and the tallest cut I can find with a mitre saw is 120 mm (4.72 inches) on a 45 degree angle or 190 mm (7.48 inches) for a 90 degree cut.

I think what I love best about the look of many of these pieces is that almost "cell-shaded" effect they have...its like the graphics from a video game, Borderlands springs to mind...I'll be needing to build a section of the Underhive (Necromunda) at some stage, this approach would be an awesome way to do that quickly, cheaply, with easy storage and with a great end result...kudos to you dude...I'm subbed...Highland could I also request a list of links you'd recommend for people interested in this type of terrain or point us in the right direction?
