Subject: Re:Ishkatar's various conversions. SM mostly. Pic heavy! 11/18 Upd - Unshaved chin!
You're welcome, sir.
Indeed, even the hardest things becomes much more easier, when you got a propper explanation or a guide to make you understand a core mechanics. Now to the paiting! Well, as soon as I'll repair my table lamp, wich I broke this night trying to take a shot of the head on a stick...
I wish it to be truth, but I bet it's all about Chinese manufacturing quality... Anyway I should start another project here - a Repair of Lamp, since I've spent much more GS and glue on this thing, than on any of my models
lol.... will this then be under P&M blogs or just a paining and modeling thread...and...where is the difference...and...well chineese manufacturing quality...er...is this a theme we should discuss...or more cuss...^^
Chinese manufacturing quality is just a fact we should live with But, to be fair, their production is of a decent quality this days in most cases... Better, than FineCast anyway
rofl....that is even more humilating...and it isn´t the probelm that we have to live with the püroduction quality...no...we are in deep to not die due of this matter...same as their workers producing the gak...just google for coloring cloth...
Well, it's a discussion for hundred pages, involving global politic and economic questions... Something I'm trying not to think at least at my hobby workbench, but such thoughts inexorably come to my mind. And excuse me, I think I didn't understand it quite right, but what is "gak"?
Anyway, back on the track: I'm thinking about a propper colour for the backpack of my Heavy guy - should it be red, like I used for the armour and backpacks on my previouse models, of black/metallic? What are your suggestions, my fellow Dakkanauts?
In fact, his armour is mostly hidden behind his monstrous weapon, wich will be metallic, so personally I think, I'll try to mix red and black/metallic on his backpack. Well, we'll see...
As for gak, the Urban Dictionary gives a lot of definitions, wich is rather confusing. I have no idea about Warhammer lingo, unfortunately. I even haven't played any games, since I don't want to play with unfinished army, and my army is far from that state
And horray! I've fixed the lamp, so here's a pic (darken a bit) of his new lens and eyebrow:
A whole hour, a lot of cursing and it turned out fairly well, yet, I have to clean all those wierd green splashes on the outer rim - that doesn't looks like OSL anyway.
seeing your new version of the head i can only say that he now looks very mature... a true vet!
the green splashes i think too you should get rid of...the lense is looking fantastic! the amount of detail is breathtaking! it would be a real pleasure to have a zoomable pic to look at! could you be persuaded to upload one here at dakka?
also i can only say i am of the same idea to only play with a fully painted army... a grey army would terribly spoil a game for me...i couldn´t identify with the models and i think i would make careless decisions in game...
as for the amobackpack...i guess regarding that most of the body will be covered by the gun is a valid thought to then make the backpack also red...so i withdraw my ideas hereby! and by the way... i am not a cursing guy on a regular base so i think i can skip next time the lecture of so called swearwords^^
Hooray! That's exactly what I was trying to achieve - an image of seasoned veteran, unpleasant and dangerous.
Sure, I'll post a bigger pic as soon as those splashes will be fixed. To be honest, on zoomed pics his face doesn't look so smooth. I don't fully understand yet, how those Pro-painters achive such a clean and crisp appearance on their miniatures... Well, if not take in account the great amount of experience and dedication, of course.
Aye, I know that feeling!
So it was that we first tried to play with our Black Reach unpainted figures with Storag... And It was ended in a few minutes and the box of Black Reach buried deep within the wardrobe for three years. By the way, this box still is in the wardrobe
Well, I didn't meant to read lecture anyway.
Ha, And I think after the evening of tinkering with my lamp I can be called a cursing guy from now on
well i think it has something to do with the whole starter kit... i have in my collection some orks and SM from the black reach assortment...and for me the models lack possibilities...they have only the most basic poses...well storag sure gets the best out of his orks...that is oh so true^^ but for me the thing with the SM arms is rather unpleasant...i began with the stuff there and after the first few minis i saw the limits of these plastic sculpts...
and to your thoughts about the smooth finish...dunno...one thing is clear tho... i wouldn´t dream acusing you of using to thick paint as you have shown on numerous ocasions that you aply only very thin coats of paint...so i guess it must have to do with either a secret ingredient or more expierience...and the good part is you are on both choices only a few steps apart^^
Great job on the head! It looks great! And if you hadn't said anything, I would have said it was done. Green blobs? I don't see them, just looks like OSL to me.
As for GAK, I'm not sure where it comes from, and I rarely use it, it's too strong a word for me, so is Frack. I am not above using Feth though...so don't Fething Frack me off, or you'll be stepping in the Gak! If you know what I mean.
I agree with the limitations of the Black Reach box, but they are great base models for conversions, so I like them! I especially can't wait to convert the Deff Kopters to Deff jets! I just need to get some projects done so I can work on them.
@El Vic:
Well, the tinkering was tricky, as the plastic the lamp was made off turns out to be brittle solid and immune to the super glue for some mystery reason. Anyway, the Makita drill and 2mm wide and very long metal pintle fixed the problem.
Indeed, the whole starter set is rather boring... Though it's a good way to start with the hobby, yet, the most disappointing one, for when you got used to the idea of conversions you just can't accept the default models anymore.
And, as promised, a picture of Head for you, not zoomable, unfortunately, but I've made it big enough to see all the details, I hope.
@Norn King
Thank you and welcome aboard!
@Jake:
Thanks, mate!
Now that's sound slangy
Koptas are indeed the best models inside the whole box. I hope to see your Jets WIP and finished one day!
I've been following your work mostly in the ++Painting Comp++ thread, but there's a whole treasure trove of stuff here! I love your work with the sword bretheren: they are such cool models and (now that they're available in resin) lend themselves to great conversions.
Keep up the great work!

A short fluff entry:
Spoiler:
So here he stands tall, "Loud" Gunter, veteran and master of battlefront, famouse not only for his incredible strength, courage and booming voice, but for his weapon of type, rarely seen in the arms of Space Marines - his assault cannon "The Emperor's Roar". This artifact was a gift from Magos Explorator, whos excavation mission was overwhelmed by the horde of rampaging Orc looters and nearly wiped out, when the rescue team, lead by Sergeant Gunter, descended from the orbit right in between, protecting the remaining Techpriests like a living but impenetrable shield. With cold blood and Bolter fire they held the line, yet the numbers of xenos seemed endless... So not to say about the defenders. And it was then he saw an assault cannon amongst other artifacts, recovered by the Techpriests, locked and loaded, ready to spill the blood of unclean, and in a moment later the six-barreled vengeance was risen and the mighty roar flew over the battlefield as the veteran shredded through the greenskin ranks with unbridled wrath and thousands shells. The battle was over in no time as the hundreds Orcs were ripped apart in a blink of an eye. "Now it is yours" - the Magus said as the echoes of cannon fire died away "The spirit of the weapon has chosen you. THE Emperor himself has chosen you". So the artifact got it's name. And it is interesting to note, that no one of the Expedition can recall the cannon being loaded as it was recovered in unusable condition.
Keep in mind, that writing such texts in English is... unusual for me, so feel free to correct my grammar and whatnot.

Awesome conversions! I love them. Ive been told a lot about the way the Blood Ravens are represented in the BL books, but dont really have any of them to read. I don't really accept the Computer games as canon, but that's all i know about the Blood Ravens.
Anyway, went on a little tangent. Your Assault cannon marine is plain epic, and the fluff is awesome. Subscribed for sure.
edit:fixed a spelling derp (i think)

I dont remember how long it took for you to paint this but the time spent was well worth it. That drip on the base, considering how much effort went into the base model I feel that drip is an outstanding addition and shows just how awesome your work is.

Fan-frickin-tastic! I love the yellow color for the cannon, and the decals on the backpack! Excellent work! I also agree with RSJake
RSJake wrote:I also like the fluff! I got goose bumps on my arms as I read the last line!
I thought the fluff was just alright until the last line, then it all came together! "...as it was recovered in unusable condition..." Love it!
My one piece of CC: you did a nice job on the heat discoloration on the mid section of the barrels, but the very ends are still nice and shiny. I think a little more of the blue-ish color there would be good.
Great work!

what can one mere abuser of brushes and waster of paint say to this...it litterally floored me...
he truly emits the power of the blood ravens... i like him very much... the yellow on the cannon looks very good and since you stated in the fluff that it is next to a holy weapon the thing sure shows it!
i really like that epic short piece of fluff... and even so i saw some errors...i´d rather go toe to toe with a russian bear than correct anything from that^^
by the way, since we had that little creative chat for the name... great choice! sometimes non latin names have much more power!
and the only minor point i could add here is just possible because of rawson, as i wouldn´t have spotted that... but indeed the muzzles of the barres could do with the blue stain too...
other than that...wow...and i really mean it when i say...thanks for sharing...
by the way...how do you create that multiposed pic? how do you get all those shots so seamless together? that is something i have to get to master too...^^
That's a pretty epic model. I think I'd let you house rule use it just for being so damned awesome. It really did come together upon completion.
Though perhaps, given the nature of the Blood Ravens' armory from the Dawn of War games, a funnier history for the assault cannon would for it to have previously belonged to another Chapter.
Marneus Calgar is referred to as "one of the Imperium's greatest tacticians" and he treats the Codex like it's the War Bible. If the Codex is garbage, then how bad is everyone else?

Only one correction in the grammar in the spoiler, well written! Love the model, I'm really tempted to yoink that idea and make one myself! Great work!
Better to sit quietly and look the fool than to open your mouth and confirm the fact!
Oh my, that's whole lotta comments! It seems I'll need more "thanking" words...
@Jake:
Thanks, mate!
I hope your jaw is alright
@Obsidian Raven:
Dankie (Is it the word?) and welcome to this P&M blog!
In fact, I don't base my models and fluff on the DoW series, though it's a decent game.
As far as I know, many people on the Internet don't like those guys, but I think it's a great choice for heavily converted SM army. Since the Chapter doesn't have an official codex and all the information about them comes from Computer games either novels, there are a lot of room for some imagination and speculation, so I've shamelessly stole the colour scheme, the name and the very basic lore, pulled mostly from this article at Lexicanum. I'll post some fluff about my guys a bit later.
@1-i:
Thank you!
It took about five evenings to paint the model - one for each of four parts (the body with base, hands with the gun, head and backpack) and one for assembling and polishing.
And many more evenings to make the model itself
@Rawson:
Mange tak!
And those are no decals but a freehand As for the color of tempered metal, I got your point... I did a little research on that matter before painting, some Google Fu and even asked one welder from my job. He said the colours can differ depending on the alloy type, heating and cooling, also, those pictures are very illustrative: one and two. According to the article on Lexicanum the barrels can reach temperatures of over 300°, and 40k Wikia state it as "over 300°F", thus it's kinda not clear, if the barrels can have such an effect at all... After I digged deeper in this, my brain nearly exploded, so at the end I just used this nice guide at From the Warp for painting: How to paint heat stained gun barrels I guess I should think about this once again and give the muzzle some lighter blue... Should I?
@El Vic:
Danke!
Well, my English is pretty "Intermediate", so any corrections are welcomed! As for the Russion bear - take some Condensed milk with you and the bear will be your friend... For at least as long as you have sweeties The multiposed pic is a Photoshop Fu - I've cropped, cut and pasted the objects from different pics into one and aligned them with the help of guide lines, as you can see on this picture. You should try it - it's not so hard and there are planty of guides on the Internet.
Another interesting note about the divine nature of his weapon... There's one trick in the fluff, not obvious one though. As the story pointed out, nearly the whole expedition of Techpriests was wiped out by the Orcs, so it's not surprising that noone can recall anything and no logs remained. Thus there's a possibility, that the cannon was actually repaired and loaded by some random servitor and it's only a typical Imperial superstition and practice to search divine purpose everywhere draws the legend beyond common sense... Yet the truth remain mystery.
@Veteran Sergeant:
Thank you kindly!
I'm still working on the rules for this guy, but the basic idea is to give him some kind of activatable Slow and Purposeful special rule.
And of course I will abuse this stereotype about Blood Ravens in my future fluff entries
@Capitansolstice:
Thanks a lot, bro!
@LazzurusMan:
Thank you!
@Norn King:
A lot of DAKKA indeed
@Reaper Man:
Thank you very much!
Oh yes, the times. Something which is always a mess for a Russian mind with only three "times" in our language. I've fixed the grammar, as you pointed out.
And don't forget to send me a word, when you'll start to make your gunner. Bring more minigun into the world!
For those who might wonder, the next project will be a commission for my good friend Storag - his beautiful Grot Gunslinger needs some love and colours... But for now I'm off for some good ol' geek fun:
