I am an RAF ground-crew chief and it always puzzles me why sci-fi aircraft have feet and skids.
In order for it to move on the ground, you'd have to have a massive cradle or have to fire up the engines. Try hovering into a packed aircraft hangar!
Wheels are better because you just need a towing arm and you can move the aircraft about without having to worry about too much tech or having to find the pilot.
The Talon looks more like a helicopter gunship than anything else to me, especially with the VTOL capability and the swivelling nose gun... it is just a sci-fi Apache .

You've got two vehicles moderately similar in some ways but vastly different in others, especially size. I don't expect to see either happenening with any frequency.

Am I the one you're asking? If so, then yes.
When I saw just the front view, I thought it was pretty terrible (it looked like a flying brick), but since I've seen a 360 degree view I've warmed to it. That said, I think the other two new vehicles look much better.
Thats what sold me, the other views. From the front the crazy huge assault cannon turret really turned me off, but after seeing the other views, and picturing it without the turret, I really like it. Ill be getting one. It may not ever get used in a game, but should be a fun build, and will look good as a display piece with my army.

Its much better and would probably look very good with an extended cab Chapterhouse stormraven. I don't think I'll ever get one as I don't play codex marines but the conversion ideas to make it better came quick. Storm raven chin weapons, Master of the Ravenwing twin assault cannons, and a storm raven tail length would get you a much better than starting aircraft.

Thats exactly the function I picture it in...close air support. It hangs around towards the back until a unit calls in for a fire mission, then its game on for the Talons.

I think the "reason" is simple the tires would blow up/burn up on entry into an life baring atmosphere where skids wouldn't.
How do I know the talon can do those sorts of things because it have the ceramite plating rule meaning melta weapons don't get the extra D6 pen.
Still the tires would make it look better anyway and there is nothing to say they wouldn't/couldn't remove them when they wanted to go into space.

Y'know, from that angle, with the positioning of the engines and without the godawful Assault Cannon turret, it looks a lot like the Orca from Command and Conquer. Which is cool.

Yeah, that's what happens when sci-fi is written by someone who has neither been nor spoken to anyone who has flown or worked as part of a ground crew, or in a flight tower before. I believe that most pilots will tell you that flying in any direction other than 'up' when you are less than about 50 feet off the ground is pants-crappingly scary.

Comparing modern hover-tech to sci fi is deeply flawed. Scifi is designed in that the writer can define anything by saying
"Because they got the stuff to do it. They made better tech."
Which is perfectly valid and correct. They have got new stuff which is quite possible of getting the inches of the groubd and perfectly stable (spelling- Thanks Just Dave).

I understand what you say, but in cases like this, I always think: "How many rounds does a 40k magazine have?", as everybody seems to be able to fight a whole battle with no more than two magazines.
Sci-fi requires lots of faith. Paradox? maybe.

upset? me, no guess things sometimes come across a little wrong written. still, as an atmospheric craft, how will this hover? I can't see this staying up without going forward at breakneck pace. oh well. probably would look seven kinds of boring if it were to look actually functional.

It has jets sticking out the rear of the fuselage. So firing those up, combined with rotating the main engines around to point forwards and down would seem to do the trick.

If i were to remodel the thing i'd split up the assault cannon, and put one in each side-mount, then mount one of the other weapon options on the chin.
The bigger guns wouldn't look quite as silly on the sides, and a slender turret with a pair of lascannon, for example, would look better to me.
YMMV of course.
If BT get access to them down the road (they may..) i might have to get one to extensively remodel.
I think it's kind of growing on me. I still don't like the current configuration, but with some tinkering ...

You are lacking any internal consistency here. If it's a spacecraft, it doesn't need to be aerodynamic. However, I'm curious as to how you came to the conclusion that this was a spacecraft. I always figured that these things were transported via a dropship and then used as gunship air support.

fair point as to the talon, I'm not sure about that. same goes for the stormraven and no, it is not lacking internal consistency.
sure it doesn't need any sensible aerodynamic profile in space, but it sure does in the atmosphere. conversely for the turbines. it functions in both environments.
as to the talon, space marine fluff is all about rapid deployment. just about everything deploys either from a battle barge or a thunderhawk, or now a stormraven.
this thing fits none of those. they'd have to use a slow and vulnerable craft (bigass dropships tend not be astartes level sturdy ) to get it down. it takes time and detracts from the blitz attack aspects of space marine combat doctrine.
I'll have to buy the white dwarf (gah!) tomorrow to be sure (and I will; now I have to know ) but I'd be surprised if they didn't figure this to be capable of extraatmospheric flight.
@ insaniak.
hmm, fine. that's an awful lot of thrust counteracting each other though. better be one hell of a tough fuselage or that marine will be pancake real fast that way still, you have a point.

The Storm talon actually looks like a twinblade off Red Alert 3.
Are the rules included in the WD? Because I suppose I would be expecting a new vanilla marine dex. But a new ork dex? I hope not.
