My problem with a lot of younger people is the somewhat general ineptness at painting, modelling, playing the game and generally a lot of things.
I am 14 years old and capable of using a unified color palette across an entire army, there is no reason why Bob the 13-year-old Space Marine kid can't do that.
I could rattle off a lot of examples of this but it seems to me that a lot of other people my age either take it way too seriously (make stupid sound effects and generally make themselves look dumb while playing) or they don't make the effort to TRY and make their stuff/playing look good.

I find some of the 'young uns' can be immature but the rest can be really good to play against because unlike most of the older players at my local store they aren't in it to win it at all costs.

Most of the kids I see are alright and are ready to learn and have a semi-competitive battle, but at my last tournament I played some incredibly annoying kids that argued on all of the line of sight, range, and general rules. One of the kids got docked points and yelled at by the store manager, but that didn't make up for their chaos dreadnoughts they used as Space Wolves walkers(which were half primed white and coarse from sanding at random and glue spots).

I say, and this is coming for a twelve year old, that if your younger than ten your kinda annoying. They're always begging you to play with them, even when your in another game, (my friend has a younger bro whos into it, but he's OK) and they overestimate there units.

Some of the immaturity can annoy and they can be loud, I avoid them as a rule although I've no issue with them gaming at all. The 'hobby' hasn't 'suffered' because of them, but GW specifically has changed to target them more. That's an issue I have with GW and what I want from it and what I don't get any more, it's not an indictment of younger players themselves.

There was one kid around 10 or 11 that came into the FLGS for a painting lesson. He was loud, made remarks on how "Uber-powerful" Rail guns are, and was bursting with energy. He hasn't come back since then, our FLGS needs a token 10-11 year old like that.

I think that getting kids out from in front of the Computer or the TV for a while is a great thing. As a father of two, i know that when they reach the age to be introduced to the games, I'll definitely let them in on what I'm doing. (Around 12 or 13) I paint these models for a living, and so they see them every day, anyways. I would love for them to come to me one day and show specific interest in them!
As for the kids painting, I never judge because at least they are TRYING, and with practice, will probably become proficient. To take personal offense at a 12 yr old's...12 year old looking paint job is silly. If you discourage it now, how will they ever get good enough to impress you? Because impressing you is important. Yes, you. Specifically. No one else. You.

Me, it's not so much how annoying they are, but more the attention span. I've tried playing "slower" games like Warhammer and DnD with 10-13 year old brothers/cousins, but often they get bored and decide they want to do something else. Younger kids often have more energy, and having to focus for several hours on a single thing can wear their patience thin. Personally, I prefer playing people around my own age range (17 to mid-twenties) because I know we'll both be able to sit through it and can socialize more easily than with people much younger than me.

Also, Warhammer can get pretty Grimdark (both in the fluff and the models) that I really feel is made for more mature audiences, such as the models of Skulltaker the Daemon of Khorne with his Cloak of skulls, Morathi's nudity, most Chaos units, the Corpse Cart, and Skrag the Slaughterer, all units I personally feel are too grim to show to an 8-year old to paint ("okay son, this Ogre covered in blood and gore, dragging a pot filled with the massacred corpses of his victims represents you in the game"), and to even read the rules and understand them (I feel) you need a sense of maturity an 11-year usually doesn't have.

Versus the things that most 13 year olds learn? Last year, at my school (at the point when I was 12), we read a book about a girl who got addicted to drugs, became a prostitute and killed herself. Games such as Gears of War 2 feature things such as zombies, chainsaws, and gore very prominently. Violence is marketed towards children, because you can't sell sex to minors (legally).

Ok, you have a point, it kinda depends also on what you've already been exposed to. At that age we didn't cover that, we got to read the horror that is Treasure Island (I never liked that book). However, Gears of War 2 would be my next choice as something not to show my 12-year old, because of it's violence and grim topics...that fact that the ESRB says it's for 17+ kinda speaks for itself.

Really though, I just prefer playing games with people older than 15, that's all there is to it.

I understand that. I just felt it was important to represent! I've lived a rather sheltered life, as have those in my community, so we act out more than others in some ways. Violent video games are more the norm than the exception.

QFT, I've been playing games a long time, and i have noticed that, so I guess Warhammer wouldn't be too Grimdark for younger players, since now (as a people) we're more used to it, and are learning about these things at younger ages. You've made a good point, maybe I'll try playing with younger players more often, they do tend to add more energy to the hobby.

(I draw the line at the kid who gives Space Marines Swords/Shields so he could play with them in both 40k and WHFB, there was one guy I know who wanted to do that, and I don't think he believed me when i said they weren't the same games.)

The problem I have with most of the young people I've played against is that they cheat.
I'm not saying ALL young people do; I just think I've been unlucky. But the fact they try to deny what they're doing is wrong when I just saw them do it is slightly irritating.

It's really annoying when one time, a 10 year old tried to strong arm me into having his way. I'm 21, and twice his size, and he tried hitting me to get his way.

when I was 12 I had a decently painted army, in the correct colours, and I knew that they were okay-painted. Not some of these kids coming in now. I've seen a chaos army that are black with orange and blue arms, pink heads, red legs and green boots. all over the place. very badly built, too. They need to try harder. I had a kid paint his entire 30 marines in about 3 min, using the nearest paintpot he grabbed, and refuses a paint lesson. I hate it when kids give thier guys illegal upgrades and moan. "why can't my guy have a wrist-mounted LC and flamer?" stuff like that.

This made me lol, but seriously thou, i have know a 10 year old who plays fantasy and 40k, 1 or 2 of his skaven models are brilliantly painted but his 40k models are really bad, this annoys me because i know he can paint well but he chooses not to. Personally i try to paint every model to thebest of my ability even if it takes me ages, i can be proud.

I don't mind kids so much. Generally, they're okay, though seeing as the store I used to go to is morphing into something I'm not cool with, I've stopped going, so I'm not as "in the know" as I used to be.
